Pell, senator's grandson and Michelle Kwan's husband, to run for governor

The grandson of the late Sen. Claiborne Pell (of Pell Grant fame) and husband of Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, Clay Pell, is running for governor of Rhode Island.

The 32-year-old Democrat is vying to replace outgoing Gov. Lincoln Chafee in what is shaping up to be a crowded primary.

The Harvard alum and Georgetown Law grad worked as an attorney in the Coast Guard and on the national security team in the Obama White House and in the Department of Education.

Chafee, son of former Republican Sen. John Chafee, announced in September he would not be running for reelection despite having recently changed his voter registration from independent to Democrat.

His exit was a boon to Democrats in their efforts to hold onto the governorship. But now it sets up a potentially contentious Sept. 9 primary between the young Pell, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, and Treasurer Gina Raimondo
