Congress: Immigration clears another hurdle, more to come

NBC’s Carrie Dann: “Comprehensive immigration reform legislation cleared a critical hurdle Monday, with a bipartisan majority green-lighting a compromise measure to dramatically beef up the bill's border security provisions and help pave the way for final passage of the overhaul.”

The New York Times: “Other advocates worried that in an effort to garner bipartisan support for the bill, Democratic senators were making too many concessions without getting anything in return. The border plan, for instance, also includes a provision by Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, that would prevent undocumented immigrants from qualifying for Social Security benefits, as well as from receiving federal welfare funds.”
