Obama stresses safety for Israelis, self-determination for Palestinians

JERUSALEM -- In a speech he delivered to college students in Israel, President Barack Obama reassured the Israeli people that he understood their plight and connection to the land, saying he believed that Israel is rooted in the “idea that people deserve to be free in a land of their own.”

With Israeli and American flags behind him, the president attempted to reintroduce himself to a reportedly disillusioned Israeli population and convince them he recognized their need to have a safe haven.

In remarks similar to the one he gave at Cairo University at the beginning of his first term, Obama shared some of the African-American story of slavery, as well as his own story. “Growing up in far-flung parts of the world and without firm roots, it spoke to a yearning within every human being for a home,” he said.

And the president received a sustained applause when he said, “Make no mistake: Those who adhere to the ideology of rejecting Israel’s right to exist might as well reject the earth beneath them and the sky above, because Israel is not going anywhere.”

Yet the president spoke plainly about the need for not only a safe Israeli state but also an “independent and viable Palestine" -- which the audience received with applause but also by some stern looks.

“The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and justice must also be recognized. Put yourself in their shoes,” Obama said.

He went off-script when he talked about visiting students Ramallah earlier today in an attempt to convince those watching him speak that Palestinian children want the same thing Israeli children do. “And talking to them, they weren't that different from my daughters. They weren't that different from your daughters or sons.  I honestly believe that if -- if any Israeli parent sat down with those kids, they'd say, I want these kids to succeed.”

This story played into one of the issues that the president was attempting to overcome in this speech, according to a senior administration official:  That many in the region believe “peace is isn't worth pursuing anymore.“

That sentiment was reflected by a 28-year-old Tel Aviv university student in the audience. “I don’t see how we in the near future have a peace agreement, because I don’t think there’s someone to talk to on the other side,” she said.

Obama also had tough words for Palestinians. “Palestinians must recognize that Israel will be a Jewish state and that Israelis have the right to insist upon their security,” he remarked.

And the president used a Hebrew phrased to express the overwhelming theme of the speech: “Ah-tem lo lah-vahd.” This means, “You are not alone.”

To back that up, Obama is sending Secretary of State John Kerry back to Israel this weekend to continue discussions about the peace process.

On Friday morning, the president will visit Bethlehem before heading to Jordan to sit down with King Abdullah II.

Discuss this post

The President spoke of how we build trust - by taking incremental steps in pursuit (not instead) of the broader vision. He said that peace is necessary and just - the only path to true security.

When the President said we need peace between people, not just governments, I thought of America: We need peace here - now. Taking weapons of war and 30-clip magazines off the streets is not taking away anyone's constitutional rights.

It is a first step to disarming Americans. That aside, how will that bring peace?

Maybe if Incompetano can come up with some pointed answers to the pointed questions.

Law-abiding gun owners aren't bringing war to American streets. DHS on the other hand, just purchased 1.2 billion rounds of ammo, enough for 20 years of fighting, on American streets, they have been caught using paper targets picturing pregnant women on them, and they just bought a butt-load of armored vehicles (2,700 of them) from the military.

Perhaps you should send that question to your beloved leader.

The majority of Americans and the majority of NRA members believe in restrictions on so called assault weapons and background checks for EVERYONE buying a gun.

Perhaps you should send that message to your beloved leader, LaPierre, if indeed you believe in what this man preaches.

I don't and my family's been involved int he NRA since the 1960's.

No-one is after taking your gun, but you know that.

However, it is not your constitutional right to own military-style weapons that our service men and women use for war.

We want to be able to take our children out to public places, secure in the knowledge that weapons made solely for pulverizing bodies in rapid fire - will not be shoved in our faces.

Stop taking us for fools!

Yes, US Navy Veteran - Disabled, we do already have a war inside America. Look at any city to see the violance due to criminals and side-arms. Use Chicago as an example.

You have a passion for removing firearms from people, and while I disagree with you, I value your right to speak your thoughts. Where I am having problems, is the left attack on the Second Amendment rights of people to possess weapons. I agree with you that automatic weapons are violent arms, but we already have regulations preventing ownership.

If you do research crime statistics, you will find that the weapon of choice for the street thug is a handgun, not a semi-auto feeding small arm.

But the question I have in reading all of pros/cons is why does this legislatio n target law-abiding citizens? Anyone who chooses to purchase and/or own a firearm will be held to greater accountability than the average hood on the street.

How will this law remove firearms from the street hood? It certainly isn't working in Chicago or most cities where criminals may be caught but released by the courts or liberal judges.

ALL weapons? That's sure what it sounds like the righties and NRA are saying is going on. Yes- we ALL agree the second amendment NEEDS to stand. However- a little regulation might be in order, too.

I keep hearing this comparison involving the first amendment and second. The deal is, guns and bullets kill and injure people. Rarely do words kill or injure people, however it happens. Think about the prohibition against hollering 'fire' in the theater, or libel or slander laws and penalties. See? The first amendment hasn't been eliminated, but it HAS been regulated where necesssary. Criminny- where's LaPierre's outrage that he can't 'pack' on his next flight to Boston?? Get real, people. "You know why? I'll tell you why. She married a rich guy. She's even calling herself Mrs. Carter on the tour … She has shelved Beyoncé … She now understands it's worth it to bow down [to men]. And now she's passing on that advice," contends Rush. "You find the right guy, you put up with it -- bow down."

oh come on Libtard, isnt the pen mightier than the AR-15?

The first amendment hasn't been eliminated, but it HAS been regulated where necesssary.

perhaps you can explain why one has been regulated and why the 2nd Amendment isnt...

The Constitution does protect the freedom of speech of every citizen, and even of non-citizens — but only from restriction by the Congress (and, by virtue of the 14th Amendment, by state legislatures, too). There are plenty of other places where you could speak but where speech can and is suppressed. For example, freedom of speech can be and often is restricted in a work place, for example: employers can restrict your right to speak in the work place about politics, about religion, about legal issues, even about Desperate Housewives. The same restrictions that apply to the government do not apply to private persons, employers, or establishments. For another example, the government could not prohibit the sale of any newspaper lest it breech the freedom of the press. No newsstand, however, must carry every paper against its owners' wishes.

SOrry Drivel Bigot, your whining will not win the day...

Obama stresses safety for Israelis, self-determination for Palestinians

Hmmmmmm, you mean safety like our borders?

Safety like the war zone our urban streets are?

Safety like 23 million Americans still under/unemployed?

You mean self-determination by telling Americans the best they can become is middle class?

Youe mean self-determination by making millions of Americans more dependent on social programs rather than themselves?

You mean self-determination by requiring us to buy health care or be penalized?

You mean self-determination by graduating illiterates from our high schools who can't read above an 8th grade level?

MEMO TO ISRAEL AND PALESTINIANS: Don't listen to a word from this statist, his idea of prosperity is Cyprus!

And the president received a sustained applause when he said, “Make no mistake: Those who adhere to the ideology of rejecting Israel’s right to exist might as well reject the earth beneath them and the sky above, because Israel is not going anywhere.”

Pretty sure that pissed off a lot of the loons in his party.

The Palestinians must reject the hardliners and be willing to embrace peace. In the 90's Clinton managed to get the Israelis to accept what Arafat was demanding. After the Israelis signaled their willingness to agree to the terms Arafat backed out and demanded more. The deal fell apart. When the Israelis ceded land to the Palestinians as demanded; the first thing the Palestinians did was set up military posts and start lobbing rockets into Israel. No peace if they don't want peace.

President Obama established a special envoy to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians; both sides were equally stubborn. Netanyahu has not helped his country any more than Hamas has helped the Palestinians. And before Clinton, there was Carter and before Carter there was.... The attempts to establish peace in the middle east are as numerous as the years since Israel became a nation. It seems odd that the three most recent Republican presidents chose to do little to promote peace.

...as if his supporters think Israel should not exist? Really?

Invariably, here is the problem...one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. This is the problem with attempting to intervene in any such conflict...even if one day that happens to be the dystopian fantasy of fighting a perceived tyrant in our own country. Do the majority of Palestinians want peace? Maybe...but so long as their voice is drowned out by those who would rather annihilate Israel we won't know.

Hatred is a two-way street. You don't think there are Israelis who want Palestinians wiped clean from the face of the earth?

Now they blame the Dems and Obama for the Isralie/Palestinian conflict.

No president, whether Democrat or Republican, has been able to broker a lasting peace between these people. They hate each other. How you bridge the hate gap no one has been able to figure out.

Certainly the following president's haven't be able to, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, or now Obama.

So in your mind he can disregard any law legally passed by the congress if he pleases??!!

I believe that is why when the Supreme Court rules they rule on the constitutionality of laws (such as the ACA). If he doesn't agree with them then his party should make an attempt to repeal them but until they are repealed then he has an obligation to enforce them as noted in his given constitutional powers which states that the president shall “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” See Article 2 Clause 5 of the Constitution that the President has sworn to uphold.

Methinks you should quit while you only look like an idiot instead of continuing this and confirming that.

    #2.22 - Thu Mar 21, 2013 6:50 PM EDT

Again, you missed the entire point. Go back to the original premise...

He has ignored existing laws of the U.S. that he swore to uphold...

No, he swears to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. In the oath he does not swear to uphold the laws.

Now, just so we are clear, you are referring to Article II, Section 3, Clause 5...the "Faithful Execution" clause. Thank you, yes, I am aware of its existence. However, while you are correct that the President can not completely disregard a law (even though "The 43rd President of the United States" always enjoyed issuing signing statements that explained how the law did not apply to him) does the President not have leeway in determining how laws are executed? Consider the following...

To be sure, the extent of the faithful-execution duty is rather unclear. Plainly, the President need not enforce every law to its fullest extent. Common sense suggests that the President may enjoy some discretion in order to gauge the costs and benefits of investigation, apprehension, and prosecution. Moreover, the pardon power (see Article II, Section 2, Clause 1) supplies a constitutional reason for concluding that the President need not enforce the law every time he feels there is a violation, for, notwithstanding his faithful-execution duty, the President may pardon an offense even before a trial or conviction.

Would you like to know where that came from? Why, that came from none other than a little Conservative "Think-Tank" known as The Heritage Foundation.

President Obama gave an excellent, well received speech with applause after nearly every couple sentences. He is right about both Israel and the Palestinian people. I'm not so sure the Israelis were disillusioned as much about President Obama as they were about the lack of progress toward peace--it's easy to blame someone else for their own Leader's failures. All any American President can do is lead both sides toward the water but drinking is something Israel and Palestine must do on their own.

If anyone cares to, they should read Isralie polls. You will learn two things. One, the majority of Isralies "like" President Obama.

And two, the majority of Isralies prefer him over George Bush by a margin of more than 3 to 1. That translates to 70% prefering Obama, while only 30% prefer Bush.

Bush has been out of office for over 4 years now. I don't imagine they would see "liking" Bush as being particularly productive at this time. Maybe you could post a link to this poll you cite?

Who knows ? Being surrounded by the Muslim world, maybe the people of Israel will cling to "whoever" the U.S. President is at that time ... however unsure of his support they may be !

May want to work on that ratio to percentage conversion too Buck. 3 to 1 isn't 70-30.

Talk to the Hand, yes, I can see where my post might be misleading. So, let's do a little simple math.

If I say it's 3 to 1 in favor of one thing or another than that means out of 4 polled 3 like one thing while 1 likes the other. That's 3/4. 3/4 = 3 divided by 4, which = .75 which = 75%.

So in this case, Isralies prefered Obama's policies over Bush's policies 75% to 25%, given normal room for poll error.

        Thanks for pointing it out.

If the US offers to broker a settlement between Israel and Palestine and set the example for what type of government they should have in Palestine then get the heck out it would be up to them to follow through.
