A House race pitting a liberal comedian’s sister against a strict, conservative opponent might seem like a strange place for a GOP donor to turn blue.
But at least 16 donors to Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the Democratic nominee for Congress in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, have also given recently to a Republican – in some cases, one of the 16 Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination to challenge Colbert Busch in the May 7 general election.
But when asked why they decided to switch – or in some cases, straddle – sides this time, these donors spoke not of a sudden political conversion, but rather the desire to give a little help to their friend Lulu, as those who know Colbert Busch call her.

The mantra “all politics is local” rings true for John LaVerne, the owner of Charleston’s Bulldog Tours, which offers ghost walks and culinary tours of the historic city. Usually a Republican voter, LaVerne gave his friend Colbert-Busch $250 after donating the same amount to Mitt Romney’s campaign in May 2012.
LaVerne said the Democratic nominee “blew me away” when they met three years ago, and he has been telling his Republican friends that “she’s the smartest candidate out there.”
Another connection: Colbert Busch’s daughter works for LaVerne as Bulldog’s operations manager.
“[Colbert Bush] raised her kids by herself, all three of them, and they’re all three phenomenal people,” he said. “That says a lot.”
Despite the attention to her candidacy aided by her brother’s celebrity, Colbert Busch is considered an underdog against either of her would-be Republican opponents, former Gov. Mark Sanford or Curtis Bostic. A runoff GOP primary will decide between Sanford and Bostic, but the district is solidly Republican.
Still, Colbert Busch can point to some of these crossover voters as evidence of the kind of bipartisan appeal she would need to win this special election to fill the former House seat of now-Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.

Thomas Doyle, the owner of Palmetto Carriage Works, feels the same way as LaVerne about Colbert Busch – she’s his mother’s best friend and was his confirmation mother at the Cathedral at St. John the Baptist, which is why, out of “my loyalty to Lulu,” he donated $500 to her campaign.
Politically, though, Doyle said they couldn’t be further apart, which is why he voted last Tuesday for Republican Teddy Turner, son of CNN mogul Ted, who came in fourth with 8 percent in the primary.
Doyle said politicians don’t affect him much, so if it turns out his donation helps her win, “more power to her.”
Even Doyle’s vote for Turner was shaped by personal relationships: his wife works at Charleston Collegiate School, where Turner is an economics teacher. “So I really didn’t have much choice there,” he said, laughing.
That’s just the way local races in South Carolina work, Charleston lawyer Mark Tanenbaum said.
“A lot of people know that when they have a friendship with candidates, you contribute when you’re asked to,” he said. “We all see each other, know each other, and feel an obligation to a certain extent so long as in the long run it’s not going to defeat our ideals.”
Tanenbaum, a Democrat, donated to both Colbert Busch, whom he supports, and one of the Republicans who sought to oppose her, state Rep. Chip Limehouse, who came in seventh.
“I’ve known Chip Limehouse for quite some time. He’s a friend of mine; he asked me if I would give him some money just for the primary. He knew that if he got into the general election that I was not able to support him,” Tanenbaum said.
Charles Way, president of real estate firm The Beach Company, gave $1,000 to Limehouse and $500 to Colbert Busch less than a month later. “They’re both good friends of mine,” he said, adding that his actual vote would remain “between me and the polling place.”
The party-flipping goes both ways: one Charleston businessman, a lifelong Democrat, gave $1,000 to Tim Scott’s congressional campaign in 2010 after Scott sat him down personally, telling him he would be an “independent thinker” in the House of Representatives.
Scott, now a Senate appointee, turned out to be a “tremendous disappointment,” the businessman said. So by 2013 he was ready to make a contribution to Colbert Busch, with whom he was already friendly.
“I had known Lulu and thought very highly of her but had not thought of her in a political context before,” he said.
Even if Colbert Busch makes the most out of her donations, from Republican friends and others, she’s still running in a district that Romney won by 10 percent in 2012 – a reality that Robert New, a Romney donor who also gave to Colbert Busch, acknowledged.
“There are certainly some people on the waterfront who are unhappy [with Sanford],” said New, the owner of a Charleston waterfront business who became friends with Colbert Busch when she worked for a shipping company. New said many port businesspeople were turned off by Sanford’s anti-earmark stance that he took to Washington during his first congressional tenure in the 1990’s.
“But,” he added, “I still think she’s an outside shot.”

I happen to think Stephen Colbert is funnier than hell. I love what he does. If you really want to get offended because he's poking your sacred cows, then go ahead. He pokes a lot of sacred cows on both sides, but you don't notice because you're too busy being offended.

Easy now, Anthony. I have many friends and family in and around Columbia, South Carolina. There is a booming tech industry there, as well as Engineering and Design centers. It is a beautiful state with AMAZING landscape, beautiful beaches, rivers and lakes, and some AWESOME people. I can say the same about Texas, Florida, California, Oregon and Washington. No need to demonize an entire state, man. I believe the people of North Carolina will make the best choice they can, based on who is in the running. We may not like the choice, but it is theirs to make. I send a shout out to my family and friends in the great state of South Carolina!!!

vote for the person that most reflects your views. if that's an ideologue, understand that common sense and what's best for the nation doesn't trump ideology. we have a president who continued his reelection campaign after the election for a win on raising taxes which he got and avoiding the 2.3% reduction in the growth of spending of selected programs to incl defense (sequester) which he lost. when it became obvious that the republicans weren't going to agree to increase taxes to aviod the requester, they suggested the administration request and be given transfer authority to enable cabinet heads to manage the reductions. the president's response was, that was like asking him to decide between the poor and the disabled. no, it was asking him to have cabinet heads to do what families, businesses and states across the nation have done and that is cut back on those programs/items that are less important. an ideologue says no, there are no less important programs. we can't reduce the growth in spending anywhere. really?

So please tell us what all this federal tax money that South Carolina gets is for, It is not Welfare because they are not even close to being a top welfare state, Could it be for military bases, Could it be for Senior citizens who are getting their Social Security that they have paid for their whole life many of those seniors originally from blue states and have fled to warmer more tax friendly southern states.
As of 2008 SC had just 38,050 people on welfare, NY had 391,000, Pennsylvania had 199,273, California had 1,218,868, Illinois had 62,525 and Washington DC had 39,267.
FYI...Washington DC gets the biggest return on the dollar from the Federal Government with a whopping $5.55 back per dollar sent in as compared SC which gets just $1.35

BTW its not social security but nice try New Jersey which manages to pay in more then its share has an over 65% of 13.7%. South Carolina 14.1%. New Jersey manages to takes back only $0.61 for every dollar it pays though. So yeah it must be that 0.4% sucking up all that extra tax dollars.
As for where the tax money really goes, I would love to know. Sure would be nice for the leech states to start paying their fair share.

The District of Columbia has more people on welfare than the entire state of South Carolina, The District of Columbia gets back $5.55 for every dollar it sends, South Carolina gets $1.36.
Social Security is most certainly included in those figures as well as Military bases, maintenance of US highways.
FYI NJ has 97,358 people on welfare which is almost 3 times the amount that SC has and yes I live in New Jersey.
Just because the federal government is sending money to a state does not mean that the money is for welfare.
Although I'm typically left of center, I find it disgusting and somewhat scary regarding the lengths that so-called (and self-proclaimed) 'enlightened' democrats will go in their efforts to spew their Yankee and West Coast-biased anti-south rhetoric from their 90% white communities in regards to low test scores, high crime rates and government handouts. They will type the words 'illiterate redneck leeches' a dozen times in their effort, but will avoid the word 'black' at all cost despite the arduous fancy footwork required in sidestepping that 800 lb. gorilla. The denial required by their brand of 'enlightenment' has the potential to become something more akin to 'stupidity'...dangerously stupid. I have relatives who relocated from Massachusetts to Florida several years ago...after 3 years, they left for a stint in the North Carolina...after a year, they packed up an moved again. Over a four year period, their attitude changed from "those poor blacks" to "those damn blacks". Nowadays, you'll find them grinnin' like mules eating briars at their new home in North Dakota, standing at their backdoor looking at Canada.

The District of Columbia has more people on welfare than the whole state of South Carilina, The state of California has more people on welfare than all of the red states combined.
California pays more Fed taxes than all RED states combined.
RED states are the poorest of the poor...10 of the top 10 poorest are RED.
