First Thoughts: Another reminder that elections have consequences

Obama and Bibi: Another reminder that elections have consequences… That applies to immigration reform, too… Obama set to deliver speech to Israeli people around 11:00 am ET… Biden talks gun regulation to NPR… Congress set to pass CR to avoid government shutdown, while House votes on Ryan budget between 11:45 am and 12:15 pm ET… Introducing our “Senate Madness” contest… Our first match up: Lloyd Bentsen vs. Phil Gramm… And can Bostic beat Sanford in SC-1?

President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu view a robotic snake used in search and rescue at an Israeli technology exhibition in the Israel Museum on March 21, 2013 in Jerusalem, Israel.

*** Another reminder that elections have consequences: If you’ve been covering politics over the past four years, watching yesterday’s bro-mance between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was striking. After all, these are two men who’ve had a rocky relationship in the past, and Netanyahu not so subtly seemed to support the man running against Obama in last year’s presidential election (Mitt Romney). So what changed? Part of it is diplomacy: Despite their differences, these are two men who lead countries that are allies to each other, and Obama was setting foot on Israeli soil. But there’s another explanation as well: Elections have consequences. Obama won a second term, and Netanyahu (as well as the rest of the Israeli government) will have to deal with him over the next four years. Moreover, Netanyahu recently had his own election, too. And even though he remains prime minister, it was a humbling outcome -- and hugging the American president isn’t a bad way to move forward. As the song lyric goes, “If you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with.”

President Barack Obama was greeted by a crowd in Ramallah Thursday, as only the third sitting president to visit Palestinian territories. The Daily Rundown's guest host Chris Cillizza reports.

*** Don’t forget immigration, too: That elections have consequences also explains why Congress -- right now at least -- appears to be on track to passing comprehensive immigration reform. Ask yourself: Would so many Republicans (Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, now Raul Labrador) be rushing to not only embrace a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants but also citizenship if Obama hadn’t won the 2012 election (and so decisively among Latino voters)? How this country conducts its elections (all the money, all the negativity) probably isn’t ideal. Ditto how we in the media cover them (like the intense focus on the horserace). But elections -- however imperfect they are -- still represent the truest way of bringing about change, or at least laying the groundwork for it.

*** Obama in the Middle East, Day 2: Already today, Obama has held a press availability with Palestinian Authority President Abbas. And at around 11:00 am ET, he delivers a speech to the Israeli people.

*** Biden talks gun regulation: On Wednesday, Vice President Biden spoke with NPR in a lengthy interview on guns, saying that he would continue to work to push an assault-weapons ban through Congress, even though that measure won’t be part of the legislation that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will bring to the floor next month. “My experience, having been the only guy that did this once before, along with Dianne Feinstein and others, is that this doesn’t necessarily happen in one fell swoop,” Biden said, adding: “We are going to continue to push for logical, gun safety regulations. Eventually the will of the people is going to prevail and we’re going to keep at it.” The vice president on the possibility of passing universal background checks: “That would be gigantic. That would be gigantic. Let me put it in perspective. When the Brady legislation passed back in ‘94 and the NRA and a significant portion of the opposition were absolutely opposed to it.”

*** Congress set to avert government shutdown: Remember the possibility -- just a few weeks ago -- that the government could shut down? Well, it appears that has been avoided. The New York Times: The Senate “by a vote of 73-26 passed a spending measure that caps spending for programs within Congress’s annual discretion at $984 billion. The House is expected to pass the measure as soon as Thursday, eliminating any current threat of a government shutdown. The final Senate bill did ease the hit of the automatic cuts known as sequestration somewhat, especially those that could hurt vulnerable Democrats.” Also today, the House is set to vote on the Paul Ryan’s budget proposal between 11:45 am ET and 12:15 pm ET.

*** “Senate Madness”: Pegged to today’s true start of the NCAA basketball tournament, we are launching “Senate Madness” -- our online contest pitting history’s most consequential U.S. senators against one another. To assemble our list of 64-plus senators, we reached out to historians, as well as fellow political observers and analysts. The exercise isn’t based on popularity; rather, it’s based on consequence during their tenure in the Senate. (It’s why ex-senators like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton won’t be on the list, but LBJ will be.) These are the senators who shaped U.S. history, whose names are affixed to important legislation and Senate buildings, and whose influence and legacy live on. Some of these names, too, were on the wrong side of history on major issues facing the country. After all, just as American history is complicated, so too is the history of the U.S. Senate. Note: Current senators aren’t eligible to make our list.

*** Introducing our play-in contest -- Bentsen vs. Gramm: The online contest works just like your NCAA tournament brackets. Over the next few weeks, you get to vote on each match up between individual senators, and the winners advance. Our brackets are divided into different eras: 19th Century Era, 20th Century Era, Modern Day Era (relatively), and Mixed Era. The first match up is our play-in to be the 16th seed in the Modern Day bracket. It pits Lloyd Bentsen against Phil Gramm -- Texas Democrat vs. Texas Republican, Texas Longhorn vs. Texas A&M Aggie. (That Bentsen and Gramm are duking it out for a 16th seed demonstrates the deep bench of senators we’re considering.) The winner moves on to our other match ups beginning next week. So go to First Read on NBCPolitics.com to vote. Get your Senate Madness on… And we’ll unveil our full brackets beginning on Monday. But here’s a tease of our #1 seeds: Daniel Webster (19th), LBJ (20th), Ted Kennedy (Modern), and Henry Clay (Mixed).

*** Can Bostic beat Sanford? Yesterday, third-place finisher Larry Grooms conceded to second-placer Curtis Bostic in South Carolina’s special GOP congressional primary (even though the automatic recount will go on), which means that Bostic most likely will be the one to face off against Mark Sanford in the April 2 run-off. South Carolina political reporter Gina Smith has a piece asking whether Bostic (who got just 13% on Tuesday) can beat Sanford (who got 37%). “One political group has conducted a survey saying the former governor will win handily in the April 2 runoff, while one of Bostic’s former opponents believes the councilman has a shot… On Tuesday evening, Bostic said his approach would be to continue reaching out to individuals in their homes, on the phone and in the community to grow his support. ’There’s 60-something percent (of voters) looking for something different (than Sanford), and I hope they like what we have to offer,’ he said.”

The world of science is a world that turns on proving what someone thinks might be true. Science tells us it's the Bernoulli Effect that keeps an aircraft aloft. Science tells us Grandma's chicken soup really does have healing properties. Still, there's a world of unknowns awaiting the Good Science Seal of Approval, or a Thumbs Down.

What we truly know about rabid gun nuts still awaits a verdict from science. For the time being, we must draw our own conclusions. What we are learning is that as a percentage, fewer homes have guns in them. What we are learning is that a majority of Americans do not want to take guns away from gun owners. We know that an overwhelming percentage of Americans want background checks for gun owners. We know with certainty, our Congress is gutless and afraid of gunners; mostly the crazy ones.

Most firearms owners are quite responsible. There's hunters who actually like to get up when it's colder than the dickens, track down game which ends up costing about $3,000 a pound, and bring it home for dinner. Not my cup of tea, but they enjoy it and they're not hurting anyone doing that. There's target shooters. They like sitting on a range and hitting teensy-weensy targets so far away you can hardly see them. That's a serious skill. Not my cup of tea, but it harms no one. There's a raft of collectors. I know the fellow who owns Pancho Villa's .45. Very cool. No harm, no foul.

Quite a number keep firearms for home protection. Not a bad idea, but they don't offer the level of safety we think they do. Great for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the real world isn't about special effects. In the real world a bullet wound puts real holes in a body, and frequently, the one who's been shot dies. Some times they're paralyzed, or they suffer unimaginable brain trauma.

So, who are these crazy gunners that scare Congress into wetting their legislative pants? Well, like Ted Nugent, they crap all over themselves to avoid serving in the military. Some, like Wayne LaPierre, discover that the draft makes them go to college. Like Dick Cheney they get deferments, get their wife pregnant, and find dirty diapers preferable to carrying a firearm. Some, like Rush Limbaugh develop fanny boils.

These are the guys who, when things are safe, put on their weekend camo's and lick each other's gun barrels. They talk tough. They're ready to fight a government that's going to disarm them and take their precious appendages. They're the ones who would've stopped the carnage at the local school or at the mall, if only, gee whiz, if only they'd been there. It's rather odd that they NEVER seem to be there. They're the ones who tell us the only reason we don't know of their heroism is because the media won't report their deeds of derring-do.

The truth is these people are cowards. They're gutless, and when someone outs them as cowards, they start with their tantrums. They'll do anything to hide the truth. They did it right here, when they lied about a post that outed them. The post said nothing about taking their firearms. It simply laid out the truth, and the gun strokers lied and said it was advertising.

I don't need science to confirm my feelings about these guys. They're gutless cowards.

This is the post that offended these gutless cowards. Nothing irks them more than the truth. Decide for yourself, whether it's false. You must be quick. They'll be here to delete it as soon as they can.

"When a crazed attacker fires off a 100 rounds within a few minutes in the Mall, what are you going to do? Say "Abracadabra" and magic an equal and opposite deadly weapon into your sweaty palms? Summon the assault weapon fairy? Ever had a semi-automatic weapon aimed right at you?

So you have your 1 year-old baby girl in your arms, and your little 4 year old is in the choo-choo train singing happily to himself. Maybe you're hoping a couple of folks around you will return fire? Perhaps especially if they do, what are the odds you'll escape with your children in that terrible moment?

Are you down with the gun lobby mouthpieces and their fantasy of One for Every Girl and Boy? Are you seeking a peaceful reality, or are you more comfortable with a living Hell for everyone c/o the gun industry profiteers? Face it, they don't care about you! They want you to eat guns for breakfast, lunch and snack. They want you good and afraid, murmuring "but...my 2nd Amendment!" as you fall to the floor in shock and agony. And as your child's body is pulverized by 2, or in the case of Newtown, eleven bullets.

Please stand up for the Assault Weapons Ban. The majority of Americans support re-authorizing this ban. 91% of us support universal background checks. Let's show compassion for our police, so frequently out-gunned. If not for one's God - Jehovah, Elohim, Tian Zhu, cheon-ju, Huwa, Abaluyia, Allah, Akan, Bavenda, Embu, Brahma, Ishvara, Ek Onkar, Shiva, Tenro-O-no Mikoto, Ahura Mazda, or Jesus - then stand up for the sake of Goodness in all its forms.

We can stand up for all the lives and loved ones senselessly taken from us. Before it is too late, please tell Congress we must end this threat of perpetual 3rd world war promoted by ruthless, avaricious gunmakers here on our own turf."

That was from Backhouse. True in every particular.

As if Palestinian statehood is all that is needed to stop the violence against Israel. The fact that the Palestinians don't recognize Israels right to exist means nothing. In fact the Palestinians don't even produce a map with Israel on it. The Israeli people are not fooled by Obama, where his popularity is at an all time low for US presidents, standing at a pathetic 10%. Apparently those from Israel are not as easily duped as Americans. Since Obama took office the middle east has become a tinderbox and the fuse has been lit. When the region erupts, the world chaos that follows will be all thanks to our Nobel Peace Prize winning President Obama. Not much, including the Democrat party is likely to survive an Obama second term.

Elections have consequences.Yes, they do. Too bad Congressional GOPers here don't understand that. How fitting that President Obama told Netanyahu it was nice to get away from Congress. Don't kid yourself, our President knew the mic was open.

It was both interesting and amusing watching Netanyahu trying to mend the fence with President Obama since old Bibi pretty much endorsed Mitt Romney for president. President Obama was gracious as he always is but, in my mind, I cannot help thinking he was enjoying Bibi's exuberance.

One can not help but think that Israel should share at least some of the blame in the middle east for not stopping settlers from building towns on Palestinian lands. I am saying there is blame on both sides that needs to be put to rest so peace can prevail. I also don't think you can blame Israel for protecting itself. People in this country cannot even imagine what it would be like to be under constant bombardment from rockets fired into our country.

Bro-mance? Let's recall the last four years and the "differences" that got us to today:

1. President Obama never visited Israel in his first four years, although they are considered our greatest allie in the region.

2. President Obama scolded Israel for building in the disputed lands, decreed that they should return to the 1967 borders, and has lobbied for a Palestinian state. He also scolded Israel for barring shipments to Gaza (some stopped shipments have been arms from Iran, Turkey, etc.)

3. President Obama has endorsed uprisings in the region that have lead to anti-Israeli regimes starting up/building up, the destabolizing of neighboring states to Israel, and the black market distribution of weapons to Gaza (to be used against Israel).

4. When the Israeli PM visited the White House he was not given a state reception and had to use the back door, while the administration has given lavish welcomings to other regional leaders.

So now the President is visiting and Israel is supposed to "reset" relations completely based on a few public statements? The President noted that Iran has a year to go on nukes, hope he's ready to help stop proliferation beyond speeches.

The Physics of Mass Killing

A gentleman named Kevin Ashton wrote a very insightful and thought-provoking analysis of mass killings and the physics behind the carnage.

His contention is that the “math of mass killings” is simple: the number of people killed is the number of events multiplied by the number of deaths per event. We can have some impact on both factors of this equation.

Mental health screenings and other proactive monitoring can reduce but not entirely eliminate the number of events, so the number of deaths per event becomes the most controllable variable.

His research shows that in all 30 of the US mass shootings since 1984 the shooter used either semi-automatic pistols or semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines (15 to 20 rounds in the pistols, 40+ in the rifles). This ability to fire more rounds per minute dramatically increases the number of hits and deaths, especially at the beginning of the attack when the shooter has the advantage of surprise.

He also found that even the short period of time spent reloading gave others the best opportunity to either escape or defend themselves. It also gave police or other “good guys with guns” their best opportunity to return fire.

So what were his overall conclusions? (my emphasis added)

How To Reduce Deaths In Mass Killings

Reducing magazine capacity and therefore effective rate of fire is unlikely to have an impact on more common gun homicides, with the important exception that it may reduce the risk armed criminals pose to the police and other law enforcement officials.

It is, however, a practical way to begin to reduce the number of deaths from mass killings. While it is not possible to reduce the rate of fire of weapons that already exist, it is possible to restrict the manufacture and sales of high capacity magazines so they eventually become more difficult to obtain. This will not stop mass killing but, over time, it may reduce the average number of people hit and killed in each incident, both by reducing rounds fired per minute and increasing the opportunity for potential victims to escape or defend themselves during reloading.

The conclusions that being able to fire more rounds into a crowd is likely to result in more deaths and that having to reload more often provides more opportunities for escape and defense and also reduces the time a gunman spends firing may seem obvious and trivial, but it has been strongly argued that reducing magazine capacity will have no impact on mass killing. (See, for example, LaPierre, December 23, 2012: “It’s not gonna work.” )

The data suggests that these two variables are correlated and that assertions to the contrary are incorrect. According to the math, physics and evidence from actual mass killings, reducing the capacity of the magazine reduces the capability of the killer.

As if Palestinian statehood is all that is needed to stop the violence against Israel. The fact that the Palestinians don't recognize Israels right to exist means nothing.

No...but it would be a good start. Hatred is a two-way street. If there's one thing that Israel and the Palestinians have in common it is this...all throughout history nobody has wanted either of them. Consequently, it is in their mutual best interest to find a way to co-exist...and if they can't find a way then need to make a way.

Since Obama took office the middle east has become a tinderbox and the fuse has been lit. When the region erupts, the world chaos that follows will be all thanks to our Nobel Peace Prize winning President Obama.

Yes, because everybody was all together sitting in a circle around a fire singing "Kumbaya" before January 2009, right?

So, what alternatives are there? Should we have elected Senator McCain who thought military action in Iran was funny? Should we have elected Mr. Romney who thinks Palestinian economic failure was due solely to culture and not to Israel's restrictions on Palestinians?

...and this just in...President Obama is the President of the United States...and last I checked that did not include Israel or Palestine or anywhere else in the Middle East. As President, there is only so much that ANY person can do...and anyone who suggests that the Middle East wouls somehow be different under other leadership in this country is a fool.

The Middle East has always been a "tinderbox", and each new generation has threatened to "light it up".

Despite all of that I am cautiously optimistic about long-term piece in the Middle East. There are far fewer dictators in power than there were a decade ago, and at least future generations have the potentital to self-govern and find a better way.

I'm not certain why you speak these as matters of fact. You're obviously more than capable of speaking to what both Presidents make you feel like, but who are you to tell me what President Reagan or President Obama made me feel like?

geo, I worked, I paid my taxes, and I was proud of that until the Reagan recession, all during the 80's I had part time jobs, sometimes as many as three part time jobs, just to make ends meet. I saw the tent city's and the soup kitchens myself. I seen George W. Bush take us back to that place. Obama has turned this country around despite your ignorance to everything. He has fixed most of the problems that Bush caused, whether you want to say so or not. That is what the truth looks like geo, not saying something that is completely untrue like your post 1.32. Seems a new and exciting age is dawning. Medical research is right on the cusp of overcoming cancer. Production of new, clean, and ample energies are well within our reach. Battery technology is accelerating at a pace in excess of speeds present petroleum burning vehicles can attain. New and cleaner technologies have revealed North America to be awash in oil and gas reserves. Federal deficits are now lower than at any time in recent history. Many beneficial and knowledge enhancing things afoot in our land.

Conversely, and to the detriment of all these, we are daily forced to endure the lunacy of right wing conservative republicanism, which, so aptly and solely, draws It's governing dogma from the "five points of Calvinism". 1-Total depravity of the people. Especially non white people. 2- Unconditional Election. Supression of all who might vote other than republican. 3-Limited Atonement. Accept your lot in life and keep your gwaddamn mouth shut about it. 4-Irresistible Grace. Amnesty for all their stupid and easily exploited supporters. 5-Perseverance of the Saints. Only the wealthy have the right of self determination.

We may possibly yet see and enjoy the former, if we can ever free ourselves of the latter.

I watched Regan as governor decided that the Vietnam veterans deserved to be homeless as he cut the funding for the half-way houses where the veterans were living.

I lived in San Francisco at the time and saw from one day to the next hundreds of homeless veterans everywhere. Regan never made me proud. Instead I was ashamed of how little our government cared for our veterans that we drafted into harms way.

The republicans are doing it again. First they start a war based on lies and then cut the funding for our veterans. Why the republicans couldn't even bring themselves to vote for jobs for our veterans.

Vote for any republican at your own peril.

I thought it interesting, the speed of Israel in building fences. I mean fences that are designed to stop people from getting past them. Imagine that, a fence system that actually works to keep people out or in.

What a concept, huh? Maybe we can send a few engineers, no, actual fence builders there to learn how to build an actual fence that will keep people out. lol

According to David Walker, just under 8 million Israelis should simply self-deport to the USA. Problem solved.

    Not a bad idea.

Israel and the Palestines have been fighting my whole lifetime.

He was correct in pointing out that it was Palestine land until after WWII.

Really? Can you tell me who led the Palestinian nation before WWII? Was there a King, a Prime Minister etc? How about Jordan? Should Jordanians also be deported and the land returned to the Palestinians?

It's funny because I have a map of pre-war Palestine and it says it was call TransJordan, no mention of Palestine there. And if we travel further back into history we see that it was run by the Ottomans.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transjordan

BTW If self-deportation is not a bad idea for the Israelis, it must be a reasonable idea for the 11m illegals in the USA?

So now the President is visiting and Israel is supposed to "reset" relations completely based on a few public statements?

Israel is a tiny little nation surrounded by a bunch of hostiles. They themselves keep telling us this, often enough. We are a world superpower. Israel exists only because of our support.

Should our President kowtow to every little 3rd world country that happens to drop by?

The President noted that Iran has a year to go on nukes, hope he's ready to help stop proliferation beyond speeches.

Yes. It's called "sanctions" and "isolating Iran."

There wasn't one. Both countries were created out of the UN mandate in 1947. Personally I think it was a lousy decision, but now the "facts are on the ground", the idea that 8m Jews should come to America is as ridiculous as 11m illegals self-deporting.

Interesting Fact. The Balfour Deceleration did not actually specify that the Jewish homeland should be located in the Israel. That was one of three choices. The other two were Cyprus and Sudan. So either was it would be a clusterf..ck

And if you want split hairs it was actually Jordanian land.

What I would suggest is that instead of lobbing rockets randomly into Israel they begin a civil disobedience campaign similar to Gandhi. However, they may have missed the moment for that type of campaign as Israel has already dis-engaged and removed much of the economic impact a civil disobedience may have had.

I can agree to that. Got to admit, they (Palestinians) are still royally pissed. And you got to admit, the US has had it's hand in drawing up borders and chosing sides in that region for decades, and every President since WWII has been trying to get both sides to have peace.

In a perfect world, perhaps. I think the two state solution might be the best thing for both parties. I don't honestly believe that either side truly wants a United State between the two. Palestinians running for positions in the Knesset and attaining leadership sounds far fetched to me, given the past that these sides have.

I don't think either side really wants peace either. When I reference side I mean the political sides between the two states... Even in the Palestinian area there are heavily competing sides between the PLO and Hamas that have different doctrines and then on the other hand you have Israel who has been stalwart in suggesting they want a peaceful solution yet keep building in areas they know they shouldn't based on previous agreements and other actions that cause tensions to rise.

It is hard for me to imagine the "government" of either side willing to truly make the concessions to make a two state solution work, let alone a truly united single state solution.

Reprojam,/Tomas Grande. Both The Jews and the Philistines lived together ,in continual conflict for generations, see K.J.Bible ,The Kings and the Jewish Heroes. They never lived in harmony and when that area became part of the Roman Empire the Jews were threatened with expulsion if they did not desist from their attempts to take over the area. They did not obey their masters and suffered dispersal, known in Jewish history as the Diaspora, until they were given part of Palestine by the U.S.A. They have continued their centuries old attempt to wipe out the original inhabitants since gaining a State. You think that they will be peaceful neighbours if they don't obtain their aims? I.M.O. I doubt it. Although I have no desire nor interest in that area, I expect to be paying the bill for this for the rest of my life.

Johntho, I'll go one better IRT your great opening salvo:

All Republicans that think like Democrats should BECOME Democrats. I would assert, like Ralph Nader and most Libertarians, that there's no real difference between Repubs and Dems.

The next election is pretty much meaningless, unless the House changes hands. I will ask, however, to note the difference in coverage between BHO's re-election and GWB's. At 12:05 pm on January 20, 2004, the MSM began incessant repetition of the phrase "LAME DUCK" at least three times per minute. Ever since January 20, 2013, the mantra is "He's just getting started..." Nope, no bias here.

From a certain cracked viewpoint, I agree with you. Unless the Republicans actually STAND FOR SOMETHING and stand their ground on the CONSTITUTION and some manner of fiscal sanity, they are pretty much on the way out.

My message to the GOP: STAND YOUR GROUND or BECOME DEMOCRATS. Spare us the pretense of being the Party of Lincoln, unless your VOTES reflect your words.

From the Libertarian Party of Boulder Colorado [www_lpboulder_org/quotes]:

        • It's wrong for someone to confiscate your money, give it to someone else, and call that "compassion." – Harry Browne

        • Whatever the issue, let freedom offer us a hundred choices, instead of having government force one answer on everyone. – Harry Browne

        • I want a government small enough to fit inside the Constitution. – Harry Browne

        • Immigrants used to come to America seeking freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom from government. Now they come looking for free health care, free education, and a free lunch. – Harry Browne

        • The free market punishes irresponsibility. Government rewards it. – Harry Browne

        • Republicans campaign like Libertarians and govern like Democrats.Harry Browne

        • Government seems to operate on the principle that if even one individual is incapable of using his freedom competently, no one can be allowed to be free. – Harry Browne

David Walker - Congress? How about Harry Reids office, and ask him why he took it out. Democrats are to blame for this, can you blame them? Are the Democrats more worried about the majority in the Senate or are they more worried about what Backhouse writes? Sad little Democratic party. Selfish. Is it not? Maybe now you can see what the problem the last 4 years have been!

The Assault Weapons ban was removed because it stood no chance to pass with the NRA and their Republican Lapdogs lined lined up against it. Keeping it in only reduced the chances of the full background check passing...but you know that don't you?

Speaking of sad little parties, have you read the "Growth and Opportunity Project" document put out by the Gray Old Party? Here's the problem I see with the doomed attempt to change the Republican Party:

            1. Main Stream Republicans: pragmatic, support the Party establishment that up to recently has produced it's presidential candidates. Less assertive on foreign policy; believes in fiscal responsibility. Probably best described as somewhere between Eisenhauer and Reagan. Understand that some compromise is necessary for the good of the Nation.

            2. Tea Party: Anti-tax, populists who distrust experts, scientists, "elites" (though they can't define elites) who do not see shades of gray. Their allegiance runs...conservative first, Republican second and American third. More than willing to blow-up the economy to prove a point.

            3. Christian Conservatives: Extreme social conservatives who, like the Tea Party show absolutely no willingness to compromise. They believe in smaller, less intrusive government where business and social programs are concerned, but more religious intrusion into government.

            4. Neoconservatives: Support aggressive democratization of other countries. Believe in Laissez-faire capitalism. Believe that war is simply a tool to promote democracy and capitalism world-wide. Believe in the concept of a "unitary executive". Are willing to compromise so long as it does not interfere with the greater goal of dominance. Will pay lip service to fiscal conservatism but are perfectly willing to outspend "liberals" so long as it supports their agenda.

With the exception of the Main Stream Republicans, none of the other groups see the need, or are willing to change. They seem focused on creating an ideologically pure party regardless of the consequences. In short, this is the picture of a sad little party...and getting smaller each day.

So probably like many others, here I am on my second dose of back-to-back fun-filled flu. I'm propped up at the keyboard. It's dark outside and I hope this comes out right first time, before the coughing ramps up again. Thankfully, I don't need to be in any particular state to argue for freedom from assault weapons.

When a crazed attacker fires off a 100 rounds within a few minutes in the Mall, what are you going to do?

Before it is too late, please tell Congress we must end this threat of perpetual 3rd world war promoted by ruthless, avaricious gunmakers here on our own turf

And none can say it better, IR.

I am a proud of member of the tree house gang too. We have always been pretty upfront that we are friends and met here on FR.

It AMAZES me daily, the paranoid ranting of the right wing nutjobs that post here, full of conspiracy theories about people that they don't know. We have friends, quit being so damn jealous and vindictive about it, and make your own.

We know that there are right wing groups as well. The difference is, we respect their privacy. In fact, I am greatly relieved that some of the crazies here can form relationships with other people. I just don't believe many of the people here know how. If you are one of those who cannot make friends on FR, quit bitching about those who can.

Remember this, you are posting on a political blog, where others post too. It isn't rocket science, it does not contain state secrets, and FR will survive no matter who posts. Taking down a post by someone who had a sincere opinion about an issue just tells us that you are a control freak.

Quit making anything more out of it. Sometimes the simplest things really are that simple.

Yes lets ban assault weapons because that is the answer to gun violence in this country. Criminals will certainly obey the law, and gun smuggling will make people rich. There is no doubt that another assault weapons ban will have the same impact at the last one, which was zero. But so long as liberals feel better and can pretend they are helping, who cares if they infringe upon the freedoms of everyone else.

Proof of that assertion? There are several studies that show the assault weapons ban did have an impact. It is difficult to know for sure, since the CDC is not allowed to gather gun-violence information.

Opinion does not equal fact, even if it is a oft-repeated talking point.

As I thought I clearly stated, several studies have shown favorable results from the assault weapons ban, while others claim there was no impact.

The TRUTH is hard to discern, because by law any comprehensive government study that advocates gunc ontrol is not allowed to be funded.

My point was that while it is stated repeatedly that the assault weapons ban did not have an impact, that is merely an opinion not an established fact.

It is awesome because they use the statistic of .0001% voter fraud means there is no voter fraud and no need to disenfranchise people over this small percentage.

If they use this same math on the percentage of people who go off and perform a mass murder over the past 15 years, 10/313,000,000=.000000003%. They would rather let an even smaller percentage dictate what laws we place on virtually 100% of Americans.

Clearly a logical win for the gun grabbers.

Sure we have gun laws but few of them are National gun laws. 50 different state and countless city and town laws are ineffective because all one needs to do is drive outside the city limits or cross a state border to thwart the most well-intended laws. National laws regarding universal background checks, assault weapons and high magazine clip bans, along with laws against straw-man purchases would be effective because all the States would be on the same page.

            Rick -

Do you mean something like the liberal mantra that voter fraud doesn't exist?

Funny you should mention that, in fact data DOES exist about voting fraud.

Several studies have tracked the incidents of succesfully prosected voter fraud, and none of them have found any significant levels.

Voter Registation fraud - YES. Actual fraud committed at the voting booth - NO.

Just a small sample (emphasis added):

In Colorado, election officials found 141 noncitizens on the voter rolls, which was 0.004 percent of the state's nearly 3.5 million voters. Florida officials found 207, or 0.001 percent of the state's 11.4 million registered voters. In North Carolina, 79 people admitted to election officials that they weren't citizens and were removed from the rolls, along with 331 others who didn't respond to repeated inquires.

            http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/03/17/supreme-court-to-weigh-arizona-voter-registration-case/#ixzz2OBYWgUd6

Note that those are percentages of registered voters, not percentages of actual voters.

What an unbelievable comparison! The infinitesimally small percentage of fraudulent voters had no impact on the results of the election, much less any impact on anyone's life.

Each of the mass murders you belittle as "small percentages" had a dramatic impact in terms of not only lives lost but lives impacted.

The laws you claim impact "virtually 100% of Americans" have NO impact on their freedoms, second amendment rights, or ability to defend themselves.

            What an unbelievable comparison!

This isn't far fetched at all. Voting fraud has the ability to change the lives of 313,000,000 people in the US plus the foreign policies they may bring in. This has the potential to cost thousands apon thousands of lives. Don't you think the integrity of the vote is worth that? Just like you think that banning assault weapons is worth it because of the potential to save lives? This comparison uses the same math you anti-voter peeps use but when applied to something you believe it it is just plain wrong. Well thank goodness we are in a democracy because your beliefs about how to save people are clearly different than mine.

The laws you claim impact "virtually 100% of Americans" have NO impact on their freedoms, second amendment rights, or ability to defend themselves.

You are correct, now. The ban has been taken out of the bill, my freedoms have been protected once again. It will resurface, it always does. What say you then?

You apparently struggle with math and morality.

One illegal vote has NO impact on anyone's life. NONE. ZERO. ZILCH. NADA. BUBKUS.

It would take a significant number of fraudulent votes, all for the same candidate, to have any impact on an election with even a relatively small voter turnout.

One shooter, one mass-murderer armed with a semi-automatic rifle or pistol with a high-capacity magazine, can impacts thousands of lives in a single minute.

Your inappropriate, irrelevant, and irreverent comparison of voter fraud to mass-murder is not only mathematically unsound but morally reprehensible.

You say voter fraud will affect no one, I showed you it can. If Bush were elected by fraud, which you on the Left claim anyway, the Iraq war wouldn't have happened. How many lives would have been saved?

You are clouded by emotion which is perfectly understandable. One person regaurdless of weapon can change the lives of thousands of people in an instant but you focus on one tool of their trade. Focus on the person, that is the start, beginning, of all mass murder. Is fixing that problem too tough? Is that why you focus on gun instead? Or is it that guns are just more managable and you wouldn't want to trample on the rights of a mentally handicap person? Is discriminating against them right?

I pointed out the FACT that one fraudulent vote impacts no one, and one mass-murderer impacts thousands.

You offered hypotheticals about levels of voter fraud that do not exist, and offered no facts to support your concerns.

You say we should focus on mentally-challenged persons, most of whom would be difficult or impossible to identify or control.

Your holier than though attitude does nothing for me. Post some facts if you want my attention.

I posted facts, you ignored them. That doesn't make me "holier than thou" but it does appear to make me more reasonable.

Was G.W.Bush voted in with fraud or not? If he was than it more than validates my point about changing the lives of thousands of people. If he wasn't and it was legit, please explain that to your brethren.

Yes, the mentally challenged would be difficult. Are we not American's? Do we not overcome these issues? Apparently not. Rather go after low-hanging fruit because of the misdeeds of 10 people in a 15 year span.

Voter fraud is NOT a problem in this country. People who don't educate themselves and refuse to vote are.

And you are just like every other Bachmann voter out there. You won't admit it.

Morgs, my right to feel safe in a public place. That is how my rights are effected, by your right to carry. You are just like the other gun nuts. "A ban on weapons like this won't work" yet you offer no solution and insist you are the only one with rights. You accept the killing of 20 small children, pumped full of bullets from a weapon that is designed exactly for that project and that type of project and insist on the status quo. I want my rights, I want these weapons banned and every hand gun in the U.S. registered, and back ground check for anyone buying so much as a BB gun. Doing nothing is what we are have been doing and it is a failure on every level. I want kids to be able to go to school, not an armed encampment called school. What the hell?

Morgs, it is one thing to try to stop voter fraud, which by the way is minimal at best, it is another thing to disenfranchise voters because you feel some people shouldn't vote, either by race or economic posistion. That is what voter ID laws that do not protect those people. It is wrong to tell any citizen they can not vote because they might not vote the same as you and voter ID laws will do exactly that.

Did you quote this directly from the bill? I certainly didn't read the purpose of this was to disenfranchise other voters.

Kind of like you didn't read that gun registration was the first step to confiscation that the right says. But that is all just hear say and you guys really aren't about that are you? See, this is not fact. This is what we think may happen to people. See the difference there?

You take your ideas as fact when they are not. Voter ID was to stop fraud, anything more is a figment of your paranoid imagination.

What is funny is you don't even know my stance on Voter ID but you certainly think you do so that makes it fact in your mind so you have to defend it.

Morgs, my right to feel safe in a public place.

Disarming me will help that? I am not a criminal or the one you should worry about. Why target me?

Background checks we can agree on. This will help with the mentally challenged. But you will be giving up other protections with this. I will be able to do a background check on you, get your personal mental health data, post it on FR and bring reason to your rants. Do you want that? Criminal history? You better believe I will be looking that up. Are those freedoms you want to lose? For now i am squeaky clean so bring on the background checks. I feel for all the people who go to shrinks, this data will now be the governments data. Who knows what they will do with that.

Morgs, you are arguing on a false equivalency in #2.17.

If you're going to base your gun statistics on the total population of 313 million, then you must also base your voter fraud claims on that same population.

            Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Are people under the age of 18 able to vote? If you want me to include them in the stats I certainly can but I rather use the numbers the pros give me. If I add the total population to the Voter ID numbers you will see even less voter fraud which validates my point. You believe there is statistically no voter fraud? I think there is statistically no mass murders. It is just simple rational/critical thinking. If you are going to use rules to prove your point on one subject those rules should apply to every subject. But since those rules prove yourself wrong you try to make false equivalencies. Won't fly here.

You dems aren't even on the same page so good luck. Now for your right to feel safe, it starts from within you Johntho. Your fear is yours and yours alone. When you step outside you have laws that protect you, these wonderful laws that give you the illusion of being safe. Ban everything, will that make you feel safe? Would a total ban make you feel safe when in reality the criminal down the street still has an armory? Will this law make you at least feel safe? Give me a break.

Zappa's that is a whole different subject. All people that commit crimes are not career criminals. There is practically no rehabilitative process in our penal system. We incarcerate. We warehouse, but when these people are released they have no more life skills then they had before they went in, and in fact come out smarter criminals. Its harder to catch them. The death penalty is wrong, it solves nothing, and it makes the state a murderer. Like I said, that is a whole different argument.

I know you may scoff at the source, but Jessi Jackson is right when he said our priorities are eschewed when we pay more to incarcerate then we pay to educate and if you want to really find the problem we need to look at our education system that does not prepare many to succeed in life. Basic skills not specialized. We as a nation have gone downhill and our education system which has become unaffordable is a major problem.

Morgs, And the preamble means nothing? Morgs, no one is safer with you with a gun in the room. No guns in the room, no one gets shot. One gun in the room and the chances of someone getting shot go up by 100%, and with two guns in the room the chance of a gun fight where innocent people get shot goes up 100%. More guns is and will never be the answer.

and your last comment, don't count your chickens, the mass killings are not over and more and more support for my way of thinking will happen as more 1st graders get massacred.

One more thing, you claim "law abiding citizen" one wrong squeeze of the trigger, just one, that changes. Most of the killings at least lately have been done by previously "law abiding citizens" and with legally purchased weapons. So that is really no argument.

techincally yes but its up to the states. 26th amendment makes a law the minimum age is 18, anything under that, the states can 'discriminate'. The states get to decide who votes with a few exceptions mentioned in the Amendments of the Constitution.

Zappas it is homicide, I misspoke. Ending ones life before their time. There you go putting money before anything else including taking an innocent life. And that does happen. One mistake by a jury. The problem is in the system it is built in. Prosecutors have unlimited funds to prosecute people. Many times, and I mean a lot prosecutor are more interested in the conviction then finding actual guilt. Most of the accused don't have the kind of money to fight a wrongful conviction, and end up at least spending many years in jail trying to prove themselves innocent. Some have been killed by the state. The death penalty is wrong and his been banned in Michigan since 1847 or something like that. I would rather pay taxes to keep a guilty prisoner in jail then to kill an innocent person.

On the issue of voter fraud/ I know only what I read here, but I am sure it exists but I.M.O. it is not a serious enough problem to make it too hard for some voters to be denied their right to vote. To me,the Gerrymandering by our Employees is a much more serious attempt to destroy Democracy in our country. That should disturb all voters more than this light-weight possible voter fraud.

            Talk to the Hand

several studies that show the assault weapons ban did have an impact. It is difficult to know for sure, since the CDC is not allowed to gather gun-violence information.

So did it or didn't it?...........for sure?

No one know for sure. The Republican Party acting on the behest of the NRA has successfully blocked federal agencies from studying gun violence. They have also blocked federal funding for non-government studies. The last government study was a CDC study released in 1993.

            The Last Letter

A Message to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney From a Dying Veteran

To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
            From: Tomas Young

I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.

I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.

I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.

Your positions of authority, your millions of dollars of personal wealth, your public relations consultants, your privilege and your power cannot mask the hollowness of your character. You sent us to fight and die in Iraq after you, Mr. Cheney, dodged the draft in Vietnam, and you, Mr. Bush, went AWOL from your National Guard unit. Your cowardice and selfishness were established decades ago. You were not willing to risk yourselves for our nation but you sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage.

I joined the Army two days after the 9/11 attacks. I joined the Army because our country had been attacked. I wanted to strike back at those who had killed some 3,000 of my fellow citizens. I did not join the Army to go to Iraq, a country that had no part in the September 2001 attacks and did not pose a threat to its neighbors, much less to the United States. I did not join the Army to “liberate” Iraqis or to shut down mythical weapons-of-mass-destruction facilities or to implant what you cynically called“democracy” in Baghdad and the Middle East. I did not join the Army to rebuild Iraq, which at the time you told us could be paid for by Iraq’s oil revenues. Instead, this war has cost the United States over $3 trillion. I especially did not join the Army to carry out pre-emptive war. Pre-emptive war is illegal under international law. And as a soldier in Iraq I was, I now know, abetting your idiocy and your crimes. The Iraq War is the largest strategic blunder in U.S. history. It obliterated the balance of power in the Middle East. It installed a corrupt and brutal pro-Iranian government in Baghdad, one cemented in power through the use of torture, death squads and terror. And it has left Iran as the dominant force in the region. On every level—moral, strategic, military and economic—Iraq was a failure. And it was you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, who started this war. It is you who should pay the consequences.

I would not be writing this letter if I had been wounded fighting in Afghanistan against those forces that carried out the attacks of 9/11. Had I been wounded there I would still be miserable because of my physical deterioration and imminent death, but I would at least have the comfort of knowing that my injuries were a consequence of my own decision to defend the country I love. I would not have to lie in my bed, my body filled with painkillers, my life ebbing away, and deal with the fact that hundreds of thousands of human beings, including children, including myself, were sacrificed by you for little more than the greed of oil companies, for your alliance with the oil sheiks in Saudi Arabia, and your insane visions of empire.

I have, like many other disabled veterans, suffered from the inadequate and often inept care provided by the Veterans Administration. I have, like many other disabled veterans, come to realize that our mental and physical wounds are of no interest to you, perhaps of no interest to any politician. We were used. We were betrayed. And we have been abandoned. You, Mr. Bush, make much pretense of being a Christian. But isn’t lying a sin? Isn’t murder a sin? Aren’t theft and selfish ambition sins? I am not a Christian. But I believe in the Christian ideal. I believe that what you do to the least of your brothers you finally do to yourself, to your own soul.

My day of reckoning is upon me. Yours will come. I hope you will be put on trial. But mostly I hope, for your sakes, that you find the moral courage to face what you have done to me and to many, many others who deserved to live. I hope that before your time on earth ends, as mine is now ending, you will find the strength of character to stand before the American public and the world, and in particular the Iraqi people, and beg for forgiveness.

Seems like every Generation has a War.

Mostly brought to you by the Folks that very assiduously avoided the Last One.

So not having Witnessed War and its Terrible Human Cost they convince a generation to ignore the Lessons from the Last One.

In their zeal to sell it they use every tool at their disposal to shout down and drown out those of us that having Witnessed it up close and personal.

This one will be Different they say.

That Defeatist Attitude is what lost Us the Last One.

All We have to Do is “Stay the Course “and we will prevail.

            None of this is true.

Simple Fact: War is a Terrible Thing not to be Entered into Lightly or on False Pretentions. To do this is to Pepratrate a Distaster

That is exactly what we Got and have discovered once again that these Adventures only Benefit the Folks that Lied so they could Cheat and Steal their way to Success without paying the Cost.

            Anybody see a Pattern here.

Saddam broke every resolution for ending the Kuwait War. He threatened his neighbors, gassed thousands upon thousands, subjected the citizens of Iraq to brutality and rape and greatly increased instability in a vital region.. It's a shame that after the inspectors got kicked out in 1998 that Clinton didn't follow up on this dangerous man Saddam and instead let him off the hook for 2 years while Saddam also made fools out of those running the Oil for Food program. He also led the inspectors around by their noses while breaking EVERY resolution for ENDING THE GULF WAR. And yes don't forget Jamie Gorelick the Deputy Attorney General in the Clinton administration who threw up the wall of separation between the CIA and FBI in sharing intelligence information. The fact that Al Qeada decided to increase its numbers and fight in Iraq makes it more convenient to eliminate many birds with one stone. It’s unfortunate the Democrats are totally incompetent here and are still trying to surrender in the midst of victory. Kudos to the bravest and finest men in the US military. Stability in the ME is huge for America and the world.
Yes many Democrats spoke out vehemently against Saddam and approved the war. You should be thankful for no more attacks in 8 years otherwise you would be bitchin at Bush for doing nothing like the neglect during the Clinton years.
"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."
            - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."

            - President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"We must stop Saddam from ever again jeopardizing the stability and security of his neighbors with weapons of mass destruction."
            - Madeline Albright, Feb 1, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
            - Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
            Letter to President Clinton.
            - (D) Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, others, Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
            - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies."
            - Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

_Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 - Declares that it should be the policy of the United States to seek to remove the Saddam Hussein regime from power in Iraq and to replace it with a democratic government.

The Iraq War was the first pre-emptive war in American history. We invaded a sovereign country that had not directly or indirectly attacked either us or our allies.

This was not a peace-keeping mission, defense of an ally, or an attempt to repel an invasion.

It was a dramatic shift in policy, based on lies and deception, supported by questionable intelligence.

Chilled Yes lets bring them to justice. That would be Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd, Hillary Clinton and about 500 other congressmen that voted for the wars.

Bush could not go to war on his own, he needed the approval of congress.

But Obama can go to war without congress approval. Libya, Yemen and Pakistan.

jblast, keep buying what Bush/Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condi Rice, Richard Perl, Wolfowitz, and all the others sold you. Believing the lies sold are exactly why the lessons learned about the disaster in Vietnam were ignored by Bush and his minions; why similar lies were twisted into a new form by Bush/Cheney and his phony mushroom cloud hysteria. Iraq was no threat to the USA, Iraq under Hussein was a deterent to Iran. Odd the Iraq war cheerleaders speak about Saddam Hussein killing his own people and attacking other Middle East countries while ignoring the fact that the Middle East is tribal, has always been and likely will continue for a decade or more to be at war with itself.

The 1911 invasion was only after American citizens and American interests were attacked. I dont agree with the entire rational, although it hardly qualifies as a pre-emptive war.

In 1994 Clinton intervened in an attempt to ease the suffering and stop the flow of refugees, no US troops actually landed and there was a peaceful transfer of power. Not even a war at all, much less a pre-emptive one.

The 2010 "invasion" was an occupation after the eartquake wiped out the government and the UN presence. Agina, hardly a pre-emptive war.

Germany declared war on the United States December 11, 1941, four days after the Perl Harbor attack.

The USA was already unofficially at war with Germany since USA naval forces were shooting to kill German naval units in the Atlantic, this was BEFORE Germany's declaration of war

The German Navy sank the USS Reuben James (DD245) on 31 Oct 1941. I believe most people would consider that an act of war. You attitude toward the Axis Powers reminds me of a gentleman by the name of Prescott Bush.

Truman (DEMOCRAT) finished that war and started one in Korea . North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ... an average of 18,334 per year.

The trigger for the war was when, in 1950, Syngman Rhee boasted that he was going to attack North Korea. It was a good enough excuse – the North Koreans invaded South Korea. This started the actual fighting. Did anyone attack us in Vietnam? Panama? Grenada? Persian Gulf? Bosnia? Kosovo? Iraq? Afghanistan?

John F. Kennedy (DEMOCRAT) started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

The first US Soldiers sent to Vietnam was in 1950 under President Truman (D). Additional soldiers sent by President Eisenhauer (R). President Kennedy (D) increased that number as did President Johnson (D). The largest expansion was under the direction of President Nixon (R).

Johnson (DEMOCRAT) turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ... an average of 5,800 per year.

And Nixon (REPUBLICAN) had nothing to do with it? Amazing, no Americans were killed in Vietnam under President Nixon. Funny, I served during the Nixon Administration and I don't remember it that way.

Clinton (DEMOCRAT) went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

George W. Bush (REPUBLICAN) sent us to war with Afghanistan. Afghanistan never attacked us. George W. Bush (REPUBLICAN) sent us to war with Iraq. Iraq never attacked us.

George W Bush (REPUBLICAN) failed to get Osama bin Laden.

            Barrack Obama (DEMOCRAT) did.

            ...and your point is?

I know it is a waste of time to respond to all of the low-information posters on this comment, but the Supreme Court has made some recent rulings on the Second Amendment, and they came to two conclusions:

            1) Guns cannot be banned, outlawed, or confiscated

            2) Limits on the types of guns, ammo, magazines, etc. are constitutional.

What he and Dick Cheney said was that Saddam Hussein was supporting and training Al Qaeda. They were lying, and everyone in the intelligence community at the time who was familiar with the secular Hussein and the religious fanatic Bin Laden knew that Bush and Cheney were lying.

Shouldn't be surprising at all. Democrats don't abandon our troops or our veterans. Democrats were the ones that shamed the Republicans in Congress to pay to up-armor the HMMWVs and provide adequate body armor. Seems to me I remember a conservative telling a group of soldiers "You go to war with the army you have---not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time." when they asked why they had to scrounge through junk heaps to find material they could use to up-armor their HMMWVs.

Not altogether. That resolution included a proviso that GW go back to the UN...which he didn't do. They do however, share the blame for being gutless and not calling him on it.

thanks for being honest left-wing nutjob!

Richard Clarke (George W. Bush's former White House Terrorism Adviser) says that as early as the day after the attacks, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was pushing for retaliatory strikes on Iraq, even though al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan.

Clarke suggests the idea took him so aback, he initially thought Rumsfeld was joking.

The Bush Administration implicated Iraq in the 9/11 attack throughout his first term and a good portion of his second term. It wasn't until late in his second term that he admitted they had no evidence Saddam was involved in 9/11.

Based on your comment, you really should read Richard Clarke's book "Against All Enemies,"

Elections have consequences. Yes, they do.

The "liberal losers" actually got 1.5 million more votes in 2012 for their US House candidates than the Republicons got. And you obviously don't know what the term "gerrymander" means. It has nothing to do with the size of state populations. It's a method of splitting up districts within a state to ensure that the ruling party gets more House seats than they would if they were apportioned according to the popular vote in the state.

But we don't want to talk about that. We can just blame Obama because he is a black man living in a white house and we know how that makes the south feel. It would seem like the truth would hurt these brainless righty's, but they just deflect it and make something up. What a strategy, to bad it is failing and they are the ones losing elections.

moronic left-wing losers like Job1 keep forgetting the Reagan Democrats; the term given to all those Democrats in congress that voted for Reagan's policies; tax hikes, military spending; all of it.

Dems are pathetic losers and crybabies unable to come to terms with their own Party history

Have to admit you are correct about Bill Clinton. But you have left out that he worked WITH a Republican Congress to get the job done.

FYI: I voted for him his second term.

The latest estimate I saw is that the cost for the care of our wounded military personnel who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan in the coming years will be $8 Trillion. That doesn't include the cost of the wars or the treatment of the wounded already incurred. The Bush/Cheney fiasco will be paid for by this country for decades to come.....all for an unnecessary war in Iraq and the failure of Bush/Cheney to finish the first one in Afghanistan before heading off to a second endless one.

Think about that. Another $8 TRILLION and what do we have to show for it? What has this country sacrificed and gone without, not just in blood and treasure, for one war that was started based on lies and cherry-picked data to satisfy the war-lust of the perpetrators?

CB, he didn't work with a republican congress, your memory is short. Newt Gingrich shut down the government in that period which by the way was a disaster for republicans. Clinton led this country in spite of a republican congress. Bush had that same republican congress, how well did that work out? Two wars and an unfunded drug benefit for seniors. Well done W.

BTW, Chuck Todd, there were many serious questions asked by the foreign press yesterday, study them. If you're going to ask a question, please make it a serious one instead of asking why a speech didn't achieve middle east peace.

FDR (DEMOCRAT) led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us; Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ... an average of 112,500 per year.
The USA was already unofficially at war with Germany since USA naval forces were shooting to kill German naval units in the Atlantic, this was BEFORE Germany's declaration of war

Truman (DEMOCRAT) finished that war and started one in Korea . North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ... an average of 18,334 per year.

John F. Kennedy (DEMOCRAT) started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson (DEMOCRAT) turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ... an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton (DEMOCRAT) went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing.
Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

jblast, you may have forgotten, Japan and Germany both declared war on the US, not the other way around.

You are right about the rest though, mostly. Although my understanding is that Kennedy wanted to end US involvement in Vietnam.

That being said, what's your point?

Please explain when Germany declared war on the U.S. genius.

Oh, and NOID .... FDR wanted to go to war and deliberately took steps to ensure Japan would get a hostile attitude. They supported China who was at war with Japan and took actions that Secretary of State Cordell Hull indicated would lead the U.S. into war. Sorry clown, it has been on the history channel before.

Prior to Pearl Harbor Attack FDR was already in negotiations with Churchill to send troops to Britain to fight with British Troops against Hitler. The U.S. had already been sending aid, supplies, munitions etc etc. to Britain. FDR had made a commitment to Churchill whereas Britain would not fall into German Occupation. Britain at that time was getting into some dire straights so if it wasn't for Pearl Harbor Attack our entry into WW2 was shortly forth coming.

What happened to Chuck Todd when he went overseas? Maybe it was in the water.

He forgot he was a chief propagandist for the NBC Obama propaganda network, and acted as a real journalist.

..Chuck Todd asked too many questions to the Boss at a news conference overseas!! Obama is used to subservient poodles, he was shocked at being asked follow up questions.

Dont worry...David Axelrod had a talk with Chuck , he is back to writing pro-Obama spin pieces like the one above..

LOL, Chuck Todd asked a stupid question about why the Cairo speech didn't result in Middle East peace--hardly a question worthy of NBC. BTW, Bobber, Chuck Todd is a republican, he slipped up and admitted it on Morning Joe during the election when discussing Romney he said "our side".

You can thank Republicans for whittling away at the power of unions to deliver higher wages and benefits to the middle class. Studies show where unions are strongest, overall wages are higher, as employers must compete to win better workers. As Republicans have been successful at reducing wages and benefits, more Americans have turned to the government to help them afford food, housing and medical care. It's so ironic the right-wing calls Obama the "foodstamp President" when it's Republican policies that have lowered working Americans' standard of living.

                            Amy and Job1

The father of one of the Navy SEALs killed in the September attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya says that President Barack Obama did not seem sorry when he met him at the ceremony in which the bodies of the four slain Americans were returned to the United States. Vice President Joe Biden, he says, also made a disrespectful joke about his son.

Charles Woods, the father of Tyrone Woods, described meeting Obama and Biden at Andrews Air Force Base to Glenn Beck on the conservative commentator's program Thursday night.

"His face was pointed towards me but he would not look me in the eye," Woods says of meeting Obama. "I could tell he was not sorry. He had no remorse."

An assault weapons ban is an absolute necessity in any country that aspires to be civilized. Nobody needs an assault weapon except for the military, the national guard, and, possibly, the police. Nobody needs an assault weapon for hunting or for self protection. An assault weapon has one purpose -- only one purpose -- and that is to kill a large number of human beings in as short a time as possible. Any ownership or use of assault weapons by private citizens constitutes a sociopathic action.

I wouldn't ban them but I would require that they be secured in a bonded venue, such as a shooting range, not stored under a bed somewhere, and that owners get background checks and register the weapons with the federal government.

jblast, W is not being defended by the right wing. If indeed he did a reasonable job, based on available information, he would be defended. This means that either he was incompetent, or the Right wing has no integrity. W is reflecting on his mistakes, painting pictures. He knows he was played for a fool by Cheney. Unfortunately, 100,000 dead and wounded soldiers was too heavy a price for a mistake. The 6 trillion for 2 lost wars is the basis for the economic collapse. Sorry, just the facts maam

Jblast - when the GOP finally admits to even one fiasco they have perpetrated, then we'll talk. Otherwise, anything our current POTUS has done pales by comparison to a 9 yr illegal 3 Trillion $ war that GOP is doing a 10 yr anniversary rebranding as "A success!" + "liberating Iraq". But, I thought it was about WMD's and rousting Al Queda from Iraq???? And what about all those contractors who were delivered pallates $100's of thousands of shrink-wrapped 100's bills that evaporated??

2 Wars off-books, Medicare Part D - budget-busting long term debt, 2 stimulus programs '01 + "03, oh yeah, and crashing the world economy. Ooops, did that happen on W's watch? Just bad luck I guess....

                                  Hey Chuck Todd -

You crack me up - leave it to you to boil trip down to "If you can't be with the one you love....." Funny - why I watch your show.

And yes, Elections have consequences - which is a good reminder to other politicians during their campaigns. Maybe it's not wise to go all in supporting opposition candidate, or delivering aggressive hard line ultimatums (assisted by homemade props) to your closest ally and benefactor at the UN right before an election.
