VIDEO: First Read Minute: It's the policies, stupid

The 10-year anniversary of the Iraq war highlights how pivotal that war has been in American politics over the past decade. And Republicans are doing some introspection, releasing a report of what went wrong in 2012. But the report is mostly about packaging and not policies, NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro point out.

Discuss this post

Personally, I have no problem with the delusional drones on the right wandering around in the political wilderness for the next 50 or so years!

No amount of "packaging" in the world could of made "wooden" Willard more palatable to ordinary Americans...

You can put all the mustard you want on a crap sandwich, it still tastes like a crap sandwhich!

The word "stupid" seems to be synonymous with the RepubliTea Party of today. It just seems to be the one word that continually describes them. After watching a couple minutes here and there of the CPAC clown show I would say that stupid is the perfect word, especially when it comes to Sarah Palin. What a joke she is.

Somehow, I don't think Sista Sarah's accomplishment of showing what a snarky little bitch she really is does any favors for the Republican party. Many in the leadership discount her as having no value to the party. Oh, sure she can jazz up a small faction of the party.......the extreme right wingers, but nobody takes her at all seriously. She is nothing but a poser whose time is up. Hell, Fox doesn't even want her anymore.

I purposely avoided all of CPAC in an attempt to evade the concentrated beam of stupid that was directed at the 'Merkins... You never know what new brand of stupid they're going to attempt to slap on the forehead of the Borg and I, for one, will simply NOT be assimilated.

My attempt to completely avoid the voice of Sarah Palin was nearly foiled when all the dogs in the neighborhood began to bark simultaneously... Luckily I figured out what was up without using my remote control and avoided exposure handily due to my pre-planning... I guess I'm a "prepper" now.

I really don't give a hoot about Sarah Palin. One thing is certain, she is no one to fear and she sure as heck doesn't get under my skin--that would be a waste of time. If the right wants to embrace the half governor who couldn't be bothered to finish her term in office, who is using them for her own personal gain--go for it GOPTPers, you can have her.

My opinion of Palin is, and always has been, that she's shallow and incurious; incapable of complex thinking and cannot put five words together in a sentence that makes sense--unless someone else writes it for her. Palin is a female version of George W. Bush; oddly, they both say nukular.

So, now that you have been carded for your registration, how come you shouldn't be carded with each subsequent election? Also, if you are ok with being carded at registration, why not be ok with being carded when you toss in your ballet? Considering election officials cannot be trusted to do their job, at least in MN where we have a senile old lady brought up on charges of voting fraud because she voted twice, by accident, in which the official should have caught but didn't. Even by mistake fraud happens. ID's can help eliminate this, if implemented correctly.

Why is it the republicans so strongly advocate for the unborn, try to paint themselves as caring about the voiceless unborn yet have no qualms in starving them once they become a living, breathing baby.

My view of the GOP's hypocritical pro-life stance is multi-layered. 1) They do not know the circumstances of the woman or girl who choses an abortion yet they condemn her; 2) they are against the ACA's requiring that contraception be provided by employer health care plans to those who want it (to avoid unwanted pregnancies which means fewer abortions); 3) they prefer their 2nd amendment rights to own military-style weapons of mass destruction over the lives of innocent people murdered every day with guns---conservatives discount those lives as unimportant compared to that of the unborn; 4) they place the life of an unborn child at greater value than that of the mother; 4) their attitude is once born, the child is not their responsibility--whether it has enough to eat, a chance for education, or a place to live is of no concern to the right--the child is on its own.

Article 1 of the US Constitution covers who it is that VOTES for our elected leaders "by the people of the several States". Various amendments were added to allow election of Senators "by the people of the several States", and to define who "the people of the several states" incompassed, i.e., women and minorities were considered equal to white men giving them the same power to vote.

Personally, I consider my RIGHT TO VOTE in this democracy of far greater value and importance than my right to own a gun.

Personally, I consider my RIGHT TO VOTE in this democracy of far greater value and importance than my right to own a gun.

again the States have the right to decide who votes..You may think this is the case Jody but you are flat our WRONG...this is what is wrong with the LEFT on so many multilayered levels.

The "right to vote" is not explicitly stated in the U.S. Constitution except in the above referenced amendments, and only in reference to the fact that the franchise cannot be denied or abridged based solely on the aforementioned qualifications. In other words, the "right to vote" is perhaps better understood, in layman's terms, as only prohibiting certain forms of legal discrimination in establishing qualifications for suffrage. States may deny the "right to vote" for other reasons.

However my right to BEAR ARMS is explicitly stated as my right to Due Process and religion and speech and peaceful assembly etc...again you would be wrong but it wouldnt be a first. In your world Jody, Animal Farm style of Governing is exceptable, in America it currently is not

She is more of a rock in the shoe of the republican party than anything else, she destroyed McCains campaign, but that was his own choice, she does not swing a single vote to republicans that they would not have already gotten, she costs the republican party credibility and votes every time she opens her mouth. Truth is WCA it is a big political mistake for the republican party to let her continue to represent them in any fashion.

When I vote, I must provide my name and address; I see the same people manning the polling place every election. They know I belong there, they know I have voted before. The odds are slim to none that someone will bother to find out my name, address and polling place, and attempt to vote in my place. People don't steal others identities to vote, they steal them to buy stuff or drain one's bank account.

Voter ID is a solution for a problem that doesn't exist--there is no mass voter fraud except in the minds of the right which seems to thrive on fictious conspiracy theories. Having an ID will not prevent people from voting who shouldn't. Few cases of actual voter fraud are prosecuted; most of the time, the cases are dismissed because it is a matter of individuals not understanding they cannot legally vote.

sorry Forrest, the Brady law (James Brady, Hinkley thing) turned from being shot by a .22 revolver to a gun grab AWB...these 'regulations' will never stop until you justify that my right to bear arms is limited to a spork...after all, its an 'arm' by definition. Its only silly since you can't support your argument other than telling me im wrong without proof. So i have complete rights to bear arms, even a tank..your right free speech is even limited

Absolute) Freedom of Speech and Press

The Constitution does protect the freedom of speech of every citizen, and even of non-citizens — but only from restriction by the Congress (and, by virtue of the 14th Amendment, by state legislatures, too). There are plenty of other places where you could speak but where speech can and is suppressed. For example, freedom of speech can be and often is restricted in a work place, for example: employers can restrict your right to speak in the work place about politics, about religion, about legal issues, even about Desperate Housewives. The same restrictions that apply to the government do not apply to private persons, employers, or establishments. For another example, the government could not prohibit the sale of any newspaper lest it breech the freedom of the press. No newsstand, however, must carry every paper against its owners' wishes.
Thanks to Dave Pullin for the idea.

Jody maybe you can show me how hard it is to detect voter fraud?

Where in the Constitution does it say citizens have a right to own military-style weapons? We can't own cannons, grenades, dynamite, machine guns or bombs? There is a difference between the "right to bear arms" and the right to bear an arsenal of weaponry intended for war.

Amazing how the "2nd amendment" are perfectly content to surrender their can of soda or bottle of water, and remove their shoes at the airport but cannot grasp that the right to own a gun for personal protection, hunting or sport does not guarantee the right to own every kind of military-style weapon conceivable. Even Justice Scalia made that clear in his Heller decision.

try reading the Bill of Rights...it makes no distinction. and actually the intent was to in case of tyranny with in or insurrection/invasion... Perhaps some of the Founding fathers or the Federalist Papers will help....

'Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding on lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb disputing the vote'

“No free man shall ever be debarred
the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep

I have heard this so many times. Yes, percentage wise it statistically doesn't exist. Like .0001% or something. But by using this same logic, shooting massacres are even statistically less likely. 10 people over 15 years. 10 / 313,000,000= .000000003%.

Now tell the parents of the 20 kids that their plight statistically doesn't exist so they shouldn't worry about it any longer.

Jody, you clearly have no idea who you are fighting. The same people who are barking about the 2nd amendment are indeed barking about people limiting their other rights like the ability to even buy a 20 oz. soda or load more than 7 rounds into a gun.

You are right, the 2nd amendment doesn't let me keep an instrument of war, but it also doesn't let you label what you consider a weapon of war. A .223 AR-15 is not an instrument of war. It's fully automatic cousin is. Do they look the same? Yes. Do the act the same? No. Do they do the same damage? No. Do they produce the same fear? Absolutely. Fear is what this is all about.

Well like I said CA it is a damn silly argument to make and you just made the argument for me, the constitution gives us rights, and those rights are regulated. You have the right to free speech, but you cannot use them to slander, you have the right to freedom of religion but not if it involves human sacrifice, you have the right to vote but only where you are registered. The constitution is not a static document, it has of course been amended and some amendments have been repealed. The right to bears arms as with all your rights can be regulated through a duly elected government and the constitution itself can be amended as well, the constitution provides for that now doesn't it. Limiting what weapons can be privately owned does not deny you your 2nd amendment rights it simply regulates them as most of all your other rights are regulated to some degree. Like I said the equating of the regulation and limits of your rights with the flat out denial of your rights is a damn silly argument to try and make.

Do they do the same damage? No.

actually the M4 carbine(US military) and the AR-15(civilian) shoot 5.56Nato/.223 and the ballistics are the same (assuming same barrel lenght and twist). The second amendment does provide for war...i mean how many examples from the Constitutional Framers do i need to site. They didnt just through that in bill of rights for shlts and grins. It was foresight that one day liberals would come about and try to pry from the jaws of liberty, freedom. Under the guise of security, or government wouldnt take over (shlt go read a history book, thousands of examples of that), or but but but. The United States was founded on Treason and illegal use of fire arms against the crown. Interesting how quickly we forget our recent history.

Forrest, it's silly to you because you want to pick and choose which part of the Constitution fits your sides agenda...Just like Jody said, my 'none explicit right to vote trumps your right to bear arms.' This is the Liberal Agenda and will always be under a false banner. Sorry Forrest, your part of the kids clubhouse, i have no time for your opinion on the matter. Ha well you pick up your toys and go home Caesar, don't blame me because you cannot make your point, why don't you reach back in history and cite prohibition where we amended the constitution to outlaw alcohol and then repealed that amendment, or many of the other examples where by the constitution we are able to regulate and limit, or change the very rights the constitution provides. It has nothing to do with my opinion or my picking what part of the constitution I like. It is you in fact who is doing what you accuse me of, you want to cite the bill of rights as trumping the constitution, it does not, it never has, if it did we would never have had slavery as a legal institution. The constitution is dynamic, and the legislative branch and the judicial branch of government has the authority and power to interpret, regulate, and set limitations to the very rights the constitution grants, or flat out change the constitution. You should know that from your history books, so why get all pissy with me because you failed to make an argument that I told you was damn silly to try and make.

Guys I see Sarah Palin again showed the Republicans for the mental midgets they are. However, she does provide comic relief.

Was on the post about Hillary and wasn't surprised that the little righties had to attack her looks. Let's see - she DIDN'T have implants, as Palin did; hasn't had a facelift as Romney appears to have had; and will be just 3 years older than Romney was this year when she runs in 2016 and younger than Reagan when he ran for his 1st term - he was almost 70. But hey, don't let facts deter your dumb hatred little righties - you could never handle facts and clearly still can't.

Disgustas, your form of government might be fascism, but that isn't the United States. You actually think you could end tyranny with a pea shooter? More like overthrow the elected government and install fascism, but others have learned the hard way. Your insanity isn't shared by the rest of America, just a small minority.

Thank you Chilled and Feisty, you both made my Day with your Comments. 50 years or so in the Wilderness for the GOP/TEA would certainly help the Country Big Time.

Reince Preibus, can talk about change all they want. They Continue to Show Speaker after Speaker at their Conventions, that they DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE A THING ABOUT THE GOP/TEA.

As a Matter of Fact, most Double Down on CRAZY. This is how you get to speak at REPUBLICAN CONVENTIONS AND CONFERENCES:

o You are OBLIGATED to say something, anything DEROGATORY about President Obama, Nazi, Socialist, was not Born Here.

o You are also OBLIGATED to invite the real Despicable Dregs of the Right, Ann Coulter, Rushes, Ted Nugent's, Newt, Rick Santorum and Perry to Insult everybody's, intelligence and reputations with Racist, Bigotry Rants.

o You go ON AND ON about how you want the Real America Back. Obviously "Barack Obama" STOLE IT FROM YOU.

o If you are a Minority, you are ESPECIALLY OBLIGATED to talk about your Ethnic Group being brainwashed, Stupid, for not coming into the "BIG TENT" the GOP/TEA wants you in with NO CHAIRS.

o You must continue to PARADE the Sore Losers to call the Voters who did not vote for them TAKERS, FREELOADERS AND MOOCHERS, and just WANT STUFF.

o Last but not least, All of the Speakers either End or Begin with - TELL EVERYONE that the GOP/TEA does not need to Change, because WE ARE RIGHT in Destroying the Country to SPITE President Obama. The GOP has to throw MORE MONEY AND VOTER SUPPRESSION AND CHANGE THE ELECTORIAL COLLEGE TO WIN NEXT TIME. Squeeze the Middle Class and the Poor, oh well forget about them, until they just GIVE UP AND BLAME ALL OF IT on President Obama.

Noting to do with:

GOP/TEA ARE ANTI: Government, Woman, Worker, Voter Suppression Tactics, More Big Government on Women's Bodies.

Just let us Republicans who are in Government keep getting our Cushy Salaries, Health Care, Retirements, and GIVE EVERYTHING ELSE TO THE WEALTHY and Polluting Corporations, and CONTINUE TO THREATEN OR SHUT the Government Down and can kicking, and the Congress works 2 days a week.

Well said S.S. Both you and I know it is so hard to match wits with a nit. When you have to bring the conversation down to their level and they still don't understand fact from their fiction it just points to the fact they really don't know right from wrong. Nor do they care anything about the truth. In my humble opinion they are a waste of space here as they lend nothing to the conversation. That isn't all conservatives but is most of the ones that post their constant flow of drivel here.

Caesar your argument is that the constitution gives you the right to own any weaponry you desire, you argument is wrong because it is not the way it works, not because I just say it is wrong. Constitutional rights are not unconditional, they never have been, the government regulates, sets limitations, changes those limitations, and protects those rights within the limitations set. Legal privately owned weaponry has been regulated, deregulated, and will be regulated again (as has other rights) throughout our history and it all has been done inside the scope of the constitution.

The job is fine, thank you for asking, I am taking it a little easy back in my home office for a week, after a gruelling two weeks on site in a plant in NC, where I will be in and out of for about the next two months. The CPAC convention would have been virtually vacant had not a number of people thought is was the annual meeting of the Civilian Personnel Advisory Commission (CPAC). A group of Army wives and husbands, their mission is:

I am an Army Civilian - a member of the Army Team. If I can get a paycheck having sex parties, I'll do it.

I am dedicated to our Army, our Soldiers and Civilians and making sure they have a "good time" (wink).

I will always support the mission, even when my emails get hacked and the @!$%# hits the fan.

I provide stability and continuity during war and peace when our fighting men need luvin the most.

I support and defend the Constitution of the United States and consider it an honor to serve our Nation and our Army, especially the big name generals that get books written about them.

I live the Army values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage, except when the papparazzi are mobbing my front door asking which generals I boinked.

I am an Army Civilian, a member of CPAC. Ann Coulter is my mentor slut.

Palin as Lucy, Rubio as Ricky Ricardo, and Trump and whoever he showed up with on his arm as Fred and Ethel Mertz!! Eastwood could have directed it.

Now they want to figure out how to emulate his organization in communities, Ha imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

Thank you, Mark and Domenico for the honest assessment of the GOP. I find Priebus's focus on the primary debates and moving up the convention to be naive. As our FR hosts said, it was what was said in those debates not the number. Moving up the convention does nothing to change the GOP's problems; the GOP convention in 2012 was a jumbled and uncoordinated mess. Doesn't matter if Clint Eastwood talked to an empty in July instead of September--the message was the same. Until the GOP gets serious and recognizes their problem isn't messaging, or the number of debates or when the convention is held, etc., it is the MESSAGE that is the problem.

I might pay more attention to Priebus if he had said the caucus and primary season starts too early; maybe go back to the original dates and keep the conventions where they are. Used to be IA and NH were in early March, now it's early January. In 2008, the states playing one-up games almost pushed IA before Christmas.

Republican "packaging" did not prevent George W. Bush from winning two terms as president (although of course the first "win" has an asterisk). If it's not the packaging, and the GOP policies are still essentially the same, then what is it? What's happened is the American public has progressed in its view of several key issues, and Republican policies have not progressed. This is how progressivism works, in fits and starts, not as a smooth and continuous move forward. The GOP had better recognize that the public has moved beyond race hatred, hatred of minorities, and hatred of people with different sexual preferences. If they don't, the GOP will start to look like a party stuck in the 20th century -- which in fact is a good description of it right now.
