President Barack Obama formally nominated Thomas Perez on Monday to become his next secretary of labor, calling on the Senate to swiftly confirm the Justice Department official.
Obama introduced Perez, an assistant U.S. Attorney General, at the White House this morning. Perez would be the only Latino member of Obama's second-term cabinet, replacing another prominent Latina, outgoing Secretary Hilda Solis.
President Barack Obama announces that Tom Perez is his choice to become the next U.S. secretary of labor. Perez has served as head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.
"His story reminds us of this country's promise," the president said of his nominee. "Tom's made protecting that promise for everybody the cause of his life."
"Tom's knowledge and experience will make him an outstanding secretary of Labor, and there's plenty of work to do," Obama added.
Labor relations have sometimes been a point of contention between the Obama administration and Republican lawmakers during the president's first term. The GOP dug in against the Employee Free Choice Act, a collective bargaining reform favored by organized labor and labeled as "card check" by detractors. And the president's recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board have prompted court challenges.
Obama's pick won hearty praise from the labor community.
"President Obama has made an excellent choice in nominating Thomas Perez to lead the U.S. Department of Labor," said Mary Kay Henry, the president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). "During his time as Labor Secretary in Maryland, Mr. Perez’s had a strong record of enforcing labor laws, especially wage and hour and other violations that stood in the way of workers earning a fair wage. Enforcing these labor laws help to close the income gap between the wealthy and everyone else."
In his own remarks, Perez emphasized his interest in speaking to Republican and Democratic senators alike as part of the confirmation process.

Seems like a good choice. What surprised me was that he wasn't a African American, something the Congressional Black Caucus has lobbied for.

What Perez said under oath during the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation trial:
COMMISSIONER KIRSANOW: Was there any political leadership involved in the decision not to pursue this particular case any further than it was?
ASST. ATTY. GEN. PEREZ: No. The decisions were made by Loretta King in consultation with Steve Rosenbaum, who is the Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General.
And judge Watson’s ruling:
"The documents reveal that political appointees within DOJ were conferring about the status and resolution of the New Black Panther Party case in the days preceding the DOJ’s dismissal of claims in that case, which would appear to contradict Assistant Attorney General Perez’s testimony that political leadership was not involved in that decision. Surely the public has an interest in documents that cast doubt on the accuracy of government officials’ representations regarding the possible politicization of agency decision-making."
In other words, Perez lied under oath.
Obama appointed tax cheat Geightner and then offshore account holding, unjustified bonus getting Lew. So Obama is keeping up the pattern. Hope for change all you want, but we're not moving forward, because it's back to politics as usual in DC with Obama.

Casa de Maryland opposes enforcement of deportation orders, has protested post-9/11 coordination of local, state and national criminal databases, and produced a "know your rights" propaganda pamphlet for illegal aliens that depicted federal immigration agents as armed bullies making babies cry.

This is the guy that dismissed the case against the black panthers for voter intimidation. Not before or during the investigation mind you, but AFTER they had been found guilty. Thats right, the process had already taken its course and they were found guilty and he dismissed it. One i know of, maybe two, resigned from that civil rights division after he did that in protest. He looks like the worst appointment since Van Jones (admitted socialist) to me. He could probably do better, but then he is one of the guys.

Thomas Perez WILL NEVER BE CONFIRMED
A couple of posters have brought up the name of Perez in connection with calling off the investigation of the New Black Panthers' voter intimidation in Philadelphia.
I don't know how he was involved. All I remember is the criticism heaped on Eric Holder at the time. But I suppose a weapon can be used against more than one person you hate.
For what it's worth, that New Black Panther "intimidation" involved two young black dudes who put on costumes, got a baton, and showed up smiling in front of a voting place in a black neighborhood of Philadelphia.
They intimidated nobody, although they might have amused some voters. Everyone was going to vote for Obama anyway.
The goal of these two young men was to get their pictures in the news and become short-term celebrities. They succeeded. Some of us are still rising to the bait.

One of President Obama's strengths is his ability to pick competent staff. This has to be the most no-drama administration I've seen in my lifetime. People in this White House just seem to quietly go about their jobs. Such a relief after the staff controversies under Bush.

I like President Obama as a person, and I approve of his policies. Even Richard Nixon wanted the country to have universal healthcare, but it wasn't until President Obama was elected we made any headway towards that. When President Obam was elected, we'd just lost over 2 million jobs in one year. We were in the middle of a financial crisis. Now, we are on the road to recovery, and the President is trying to grow the middle class and provide us with stability, so we don't hit the rocks again like we did in 2008. It's such a shame the Republicans don't seem to be trying to help. All they are interseted in is preserving tax cuts for the rich.

As for your flowery outlook, the Great Depression eventually ended in spite of all the government meddling, I suppose the same would be true for the "Great Recession". Obamacare is already projected to cost triple of what it was sold to the public for, and when all the jobs were lost due to the bursting of the Democratic housing bubble, we are still nowhere near recovering all of those jobs, more people than ever are reliant on welfare and food stamps. Obama's policies are hammering the middle class, I've seen no tax relief yet. In fact, the administration can speak of nothing but new revenues. Their idea of spending cuts is to not spend quite as much as they had hoped to, there are no actual cuts. I don't think rich people should get special tax cuts, but I also think that nearly half of the country should not be getting by without paying any income tax at all. Our country is in some of the greatest turmoil it has been in in decades, Obama only fans the flames.

Perez had served as Secretary of theMaryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) from January 2007, when he was appointed to that position by Governor Martin O'Malley, until his October 2009 confirmation by the United States Senate as Assistant Attorney General.

"The president on Monday tapped Justice Department official Thomas Perez for the Labor post. The candidate, though, was already being questioned over a newly released report that found he gave incomplete testimony on the decision to drop charges against members of the new Black Panthers.

The President is selecting someone he, with the information from advisory experts, says is a good choice. He should get the people he wants. If his choice doesn't work out than the lame stream media and others can complain. Give the guy a chance, for crying out loud.

Perez is the worst possible choice which is no surprise from this administration, whose policies favor deadbeats over hard working people.
