Rand Paul wins CPAC straw poll; Rubio close second

CPAC stands with Rand.

“Torch of liberty” scion Rand Paul was the choice of the plurality of conservatives at the Conservative Political Action Conference, as Paul won the much-hyped straw poll with 25 percent. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was a close second with 23 percent.

It shouldn’t be surprising that the Kentucky senator won the straw poll. This was not a weekend of self-reflection for conservatives. It was one of standing by principles, and no one more represents standing by principles than Paul.

Paul last week further endeared himself to conservatives by going through with a 13-hour filibuster – a modern-day record – of President Barack Obama’s nomination to be chief of central intelligence. That effort by the Tea Party favorite prompted Twitter hash tags, signs at CPAC, and even fundraising emails from the National Republican Senatorial Committee by the name of Stand With Rand.

Additionally, with 23 people on the CPAC straw-poll ballot, Paul benefitted from the deepest support for a single candidate because of young Libertarians, many of whom make up CPAC's audience. In fact, a majority -- 52 percent -- of voters were between the ages of 18 to 25, according to Republican Tony Fabrizio, who analyzed the results for CPAC and made the official announcement Saturday.

Sen. Rand Paul delivers remarks at CPAC that are centered around the ongoing budget battles in Washington.

CPAC has always attracted college-age activists, but this is an even higher number than in past years, according to Fabrizio.

Paul supporters have demonstrated strong organizational skills around straw polls over the last several years, as they helped Paul’s father, ex-Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, win the 2010 and 2011 CPAC straw polls.

Rick Santorum finished a distant third with 8 percent. Popular New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was not invited to CPAC, finished fourth with 7 percent; Paul Ryan, the 2012 vice-presidential candidate was next at 6 percent; then Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker 5 percent; neurosurgeon Ben Carson and keynoter Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tied at 4 percent; followed by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin percent.

Related: More CPAC coverage from NBC News

Forty-four others, including write-in votes for Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Allen West, got 14 percent.

Before anyone makes too much of the results, remember that the last person to win the straw poll three years before an open presidential election (no incumbent) was Rudy Giuliani in 2005. While Giuliani led in many national polls, he only won 1 delegate in the Republican presidential primaries in 2008. And in 2006, the winner was George Allen, the former Virginia governor, who had his 2006 Senate race sunk by his YouTube utterance of "macaca," a term he used to describe a Democratic video tracker.

Voting took place throughout the weekend, but voting closed at 1 p.m. ET Saturday. CPAC organizers said privately they expected up to 8,000 and 10,000 activists at this year's conference -- 2,930 voted.

The ballroom at the event holds 3,500 seats, and up to 4,000 people when standing room is included. All voting took place electronically, either through kiosks at the site in National Harbor, Md., just outside Washington, D.C., through an app, or online.

The libertarian followers of Ron and now Rand Paul have been embarrassing the GOP in straw polls for the last three years.

Redux of the last two election cycles.

Rand Paul is credible. Recently he just grabbed all spotlight to stage a filibuster that is ninth longest in senate history. A star is rising inside the GOP. Paul has wanted to cut defense, making him even more credible and refreshing.

After Obama secured his second term, I think a return to GOP is not a bad thing, but the GOP has to be up to the task. After all, the voters will decide if they want another Martin Van Buren in 2016.

There isn't a single candidate speaking at CPAC that has any more realistic hope of being president than I do. The fact that a person would be on the same speakers listing as Sarah Palin should be an automatic disqualification from office.

What happened to the ideology of Eisenhower, Goldwater and even Reagan, who cared about the Middle Class, not reducing the very wealthy's tax bill by $400K, which they would piss away on a Monte Carlo gambling spree, while the Middle Class was trying to figure how to pay the medical and other bills.

Hey fellow Minnesotan, haven't seen you on here for a while.

Who won Minnesota on the GOP side? Ron Paul had almost all the delegates while butt goo got the most votes. But the libertarians took over a huge chunk of the roles going into the future, as well as did they in many other states. If the GOP is to survive, they better understand that libertarian philosophy is how they will do it. It is what they used to be. It is what the founders were. It is what we should agree to. Fiscally responsible, socially liberal, driven by the principles of the Constitution.

I know I will be lambasted for this comment, but consider this. Being fiscally responsible is a mainstay of conservatives. Being socially liberal is a mainstay of the Democrats. And the Constitution is what is supposed to bind us together as a nation. "Libertarian" needs to quit being used as a swear word, because it is the ultimate in crossing party lines that have deadlocked us for decades.

We, in MN elected Jesse Ventura because we were willing to try anything to make our lives and government better. And while everything did not end up a success, at least we tried to make a change to the status quo.

After selecting McCain & Palin, and Romney & Ryan to carry their Party's banner in the last two Presidential Elections, if the GOP nominates a certifiable whackadoodle the likes of Rand Paul in 2016 the White House and both Houses of the US Congress will be safely controlled by the Democratic Party for the next two generations or longer while America awaits the eventual formation of an actually credible 2nd Party.

It is hard to understand how "leaders" of the Republican Party fail to recognize what is obvious to passive onlookers; that the "accelerating forward motion" they believe they are experiencing is actually their party circling the drain, and getting ever closer to the event horizon of disappearing down the waste pipe of American History.

ivan, NC

Did you actually watch the filibuster, or are you relying on the media and what you have been told?

1 If they haven't gotten anything done, what really was the difference Rand filibustering?

2 It was not making a speech, it was pointing out excess power in the Executive that Congress gave willingly.

3 He pissed his own party off more than the Democrats, even though they were annoyed too.

4 If he delayed some major legislation, considering some of the legislation that has passed, good for him.

Perhaps you should actually go watch it to determine its relevance?

By the way, If you do take the time to watch it and make up your own mind, pay attention to the junior senator from Texas who has argued repeatedly in front of the SCOTUS. Amazing speaker.

This is not an "Indicator" that Rand Paul will be a Presidential Candidate, but he did have the Courage to Filibuster for 13 hrs---who else would have done that?---He is a true Politician, who follows the Constitution. He is very different in his views than his own father, Ron Paul----

The Republican party is changing--yes, changing---"In with the new, out with the Old"; it is very exciting---Karl Rove is now a Dinosaur for the Republicans, and so is Mitch McConnell.

They have to accept/or change their thoughts re: Abortion rights, Feminism, Gay Marriage, Gay Partners, Gays in the Military, future issues or they will be out with the dust. Republicans truly want to win---young new Leaders, only. There are many appealing candidates.

I will wholeheartedly agree that carrying the stigma of GOP around will hurt, and that is like buying a company that has bad brand recognition. Ron Paul tore the GOP apart from the inside and many of his followers are in key positions around the country because of it. I think they are actually doing a hostile takeover. But taking it over with all infrastructure intact is easier and more beneficial that going to third party and getting 1% of the vote.

Time will tell.

What's funny about Jesse is that I actually thought he did a pretty good job, just couldn't take the negative criticism. Hell of a lot better than Dayton IMHO

This was not a weekend of self-reflection for conservatives. It was one of standing by principles, and no one more represents standing by principles than Paul.

Principles.

A virtue unknown to Liberals/Progressives, and as such will be their demise.

Liberals don't accept principles, because they lack morals, as such they prefer ideology. Ineffectual and unsustainable ideologies. Their irrational belief in social and economic justice is a primary example of their delusion. Their Jim Jones Kool-Aid infatuation with the collective exposes their simple-mindedness and lack of self-respect.

As a Libertarian, Rand Paul promotes many Conservative and TEA Party beliefs. Constitutionally limited government, federalism, fiscal responsibility, free-market principles and rejection of more taxes for our criminal government are core principles shared by all three groups. Responsibility rather than servility to a monolithic bureaucracy is the hallmark of these groups. Any pedestrian ideologue can be indoctrinated into collectivism as it doesn't require any real effort or ambition, just compliance.

The young leadership of Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, all budding stars with a real vision for our great Republic. Their fresh ideas and enthusiasm are already spreading through the electorate. As real Americans see the incredible failure of the social experiment called Barrack Hussein, the true fundamental transformation of America can begin. Never-ending campaigning, demonization of success and mismanagement have been the foundation of Barrack Husseins governance. Support of Pro-Life, term limits, a balanced budget amendment, Read the Bills Act, cutting government spending, lower taxes and his immigration policy create a solid platform. Opposition to the Campaign Reform Act, the Patriot Act, warrantless searches and his recent stand against extrajudicial killing of Americans should appeal to a large part of the electorate.

Principles are fundamental truths, laws, doctrines or a motivating force. These have been summarily stripped from many Americans, especially Liberals/Progressives. The principles of our Constitution, what a Republic is, social, moral and cultural relevance are essential to a persons character and serves as the foundation for our behavior individually with others. Responsibility, compassion, self-esteem and ambition create a vibrant society built on commerce and prosperity.

Regardless of the candidate, these are the principles we need to promote and eliminate the Liberal/Progressive nonsense that has never worked before other than in the faculty-lounge of ideologues who have never achieved anything of significance.

Symbolism over substance must be eliminated and proven principles with successful outcomes supported.

Hmmm... I am a "Goldwater Republican" meaning a moderate with conservative fiscal goals. I believe that any adult male who makes the choice to wear his hair in a rat's nest configuration, cannot be taken seriously about anything. The voters of KY made a big mistake by electing this embarrassing nit-wit.

If nearly 50% of the CPAC attendees voted for Paul and Rubio, it means one thing. The Republican Party is mired in a swamp of deep doo-doo.

Furthermore, Mr. Santorum is a joke. If the GOP entertains Santorum 's crude and draconian beliefs, whoever the Democrats pick will win.

The Republican Party, (The GOP - meaning the Grand Old Party), MUST wake up and realize that they must represent and care about all of the people - not just the conservatives and not just the wealthy.

The GOP must realize the value of teamwork in order to achieve goals. Like it or not, we are all in this mess together. The silliness and incompetence of the U.S. Congress is responsible for this mess. We, the people, elect the members of congress.

The late cartoonist, Walt Kelly, depicted it best on Earth Day in 1973, when Pogo Possum said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

The antiwar.com articles written by Jason Raimuno (sp) in March regarding Rand Paul's stance on the filibuster are insightful, nonpartisan, lengthy clarification of the great degree Paul's actions took to positively impact the relationship between American citizens and our government. I also just finished reading Government Bullies, by Rand Paul. It entails incredibly outrageous accounts of contemporary Americans who have been horribly mistreated and imprisoned and subjected to manifestly illegal actions against them by the overreach of our government. Another good read for people whose interests lie in understanding what the breadth of the federal government - through the ill-actions of the agency of the EPA - has proven it is capable of and what necessitates our participation in the process of placing the government back under the control of the People. I applaud Rand Paul. I applaud the young people enthralled with what it means to regain a love for the foundations of freedom and the embracing of every American citizen as individually valuable for their differences and the creative and sustantive ways in which they can mend a divided nation.

Jim Spence....people like you are the real problem, not liberals/progressives. You think only you have the answers....that only you know what is best for this country and everybody else is an idiot. If that were true, then those extremists that you mentioned, Rubio, Paul, Walker, etc, would have made a much bigger impact than they have thus far. The reason is not because liberals 'just don't get it', but because extremists are hugely bad for the country regardless of which direction they lean. Not everybody is rich, not everybody is poor, not everybody is black, not everybody is white, not everybody is straight, and not everybody is gay. But, in all those cases, many people are. One stupid ideology won't work across the board as you are proposing. The right needs to come more to the center in order to survive the demographics of today's society....hopefully, they never will and will continue to get swamped at the major elections. Religion, as a cult, is dying as well, because many young people in this country are realizing that religious ferver is the root of all the stupid extremism stemming from the idiotic policies coming from the mouths of the nutjobs on the right. So....keep up with your 'principles'....that will spell the end of your lunatic fringe party and keep the more open-minded liberal policies in the forefront.

The Paul's have some good ideas. I am very much in favor of closing all of our foreign bases and bringing our Young People home. There is no reason to be in the Middle East. But the Paul's have some very unrealistic and impractical things they want to do that make them fringe candidates. It is too bad because it taints some of the fine things they advocate.

JimSpence

This was not a weekend of self-reflection for conservatives. It was one of standing by principles, and no one more represents standing by principles than Paul.

Principles.

A virtue unknown to Liberals/Progressives, and as such will be their demise.

Yet another spout of propaganda from yet another right-wing extremist.

Alright, it takes to tango, so let's dance. Liberals do accept principals; hell, we HAVE principles. Ideology is merely the vast array of principles that people adhere to. The very concept of liberalism is progress, in both the social and the economic sphere. We do not accept the idea that some people can be mistreated, and that some people can control the livelihood of others. We do not accept the status quo for the sham that it is; we shall march forward so that all men and women can claim their "inalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." That is why we shall never agree with the backward-minded delusion that is your precious modern conservatism.

You right-wingers are nothing but a bunch of static ideologues. You think that the Constitution freezes our society in the 18th century and that the Founders abhorred the very idea of liberalism, even though they were (surprise surprise) liberals themselves, seeking change from the conservative status quo of mercantile imperialism and absolute monarchies. You claim that the free markets will make our nation the pride of the earth, and yet it reduced us to the laughingstock of modern civilization. It sent millions of Americans to the unemployment office and millions more below the poverty line. You feel that the individual is the most important part of society, and that his whims overpower any other concern. I do not oppose the importance of the individual; he is a major part of our society. And yet the measure of an individual's greatness is his ability to put aside his interests for that of society; he need not abandon his liberty, but merely admit that at least sometimes, the welfare of the many are more important than the whims of the few.

Those so-called "budding stars" are nothing more than puppets for those who seek to dominate our society. They are nothing more than figureheads for the conservatives who want to roll back all vestiges of the New Deal, including Social Security. They want nothing more than to return this country to the "Golden Era" before Progressivism, even though that means condemning a third of America to the poorhouse and creating the biggest wealth-transferring Ponzi scheme in the history of modern civilization. So go ahead; sing the praises of conservatism. Just realize that you are nothing more than a front for a truly fascist movement in the United States.

What you fail to admit is that the American people have rejected your ridiculous ideology. They may oppose warrantless searches and the Patriot Act (as do I), they oppose the idea that the free market always knows best (as this recession proves to be a myth), that social injustice is acceptable, and that the only good government is one that can be "drowned in a bathtub." Accept it; the American people are done with Reaganomics, and they are done with modern conservatism.

You are merely another figurehead, supposedly clothed in the aura of our Constitution but merely fed the same idiotic principles that led to this recession. The American people were not "stripped" of their character by Liberals and Progressives; they evolved into who they are know, a semi-secular, semi-religious society that is tolerant of minorities and respects capitalist and private initiative while acknowledging it's flaws and abuses. You are just another hapless ideologue pursuing a purist and dogmatic philosophy.

Regardless of the candidate, these are the principles we need to promote and eliminate the Liberal/Progressive nonsense that has never worked before other than in the faculty-lounge of ideologues who have never achieved anything of significance.

So come at us; try and denounce our ideas in front of the American people. Let America decide who we should put our undying faith and respect in: the socially restrictive and discriminating religious extremists and the speculative and fascist financial elite; or the undeniable strength and resolve of We the People, the ordinary worker, and our reliance on reason, personal belief, and the belief that all men and women are create equal. And in doing so, liberalism and progressivism will eventually transcend the dogmatically-narrow confines of modern fascist conservatism. See you on the ideological battlefields, my misguided fascist figurehead.

@ Annabannana

Ayn Rand - Rand advocated reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge and rejected faith and religion. She supported rational and ethical egoism, and rejected ethical altruism. In politics, she condemned the initiation of force as immoral[3] and opposed collectivism and statism as well as anarchism, instead supporting a minarchist limited government and laissez-faire capitalism, which she believed was the only social system that protected individual rights.

Yes that sounds like a communist... maybe you should spend a little more effort researching your claims.

I wonder if you realize that while you consider yourself a liberal, that you generally do not subscribe to the characteristics of those that are generally bashed. And because you take offense to the generalization, maybe you should call out those that diminish your beliefs that portray themselves to be on your side.

When, forgive the term, "liberals" come on to sight and disparage anyone from an opposite party only to uphold party, rather than principles, as if they are rooting for their favorite football team, not thinking that the world will live past next sunday, with no redeeming argument at their arsenal, that is what is most argued as "liberal".

I know the other side does it too, and that is the problem, that there are sides at all.

Perhaps we should value honor and integrity in those we choose to represent us at higher value than whether they have a D or an R. It might solve a lot of problems.

John - well said. 99% of the time I am sure that the people in these forums refer to anyone on the the other side as conservative or liberal when in reality the majority of people have a mix of viewpoints. For instance, I am strongly moderate, but consider my views too mixed to be label D or R. That being said, when I comment on an article about guns and say something like I believe in the 2nd Amendment I am called a conservative gun nut, but if I say later in the forum that I am for strong gun registration laws I am called a "libtard" that doesn't respect rights.

Liberal and Conservative used to have very specific meanings, but nowadays they are thrown around so much that you realize quickly that very few people in these forums have any idea what those terms truly mean. Not all D's are liberals and not all R's are conservative and most people are neither all D, R, L, or TP completely.

"When, forgive the term, "liberals" come on to sight and disparage anyone from an opposite party...." Hey john-737278, get off your high horse and look in a mirror if you think only liberals disparage anyone from an opposing view. How many times do we have to read a comment that beings with "libtards" that leads into a rant that actually says nothing of importance at all except to disparage liberal viewpoints. Maybe you should do what I do. When a comment starts out with disparaging name-calling, I figure the comment's not worth the read and simply move on to the next comment. I doubt I miss much in the way of illuminating commentary that way.

Welcome to real life 8) are country is on the wrong track.

I can honestly say that having a background check if you want to buy a gun is something any sane person could agree on 8) we need to strengthen that but ban high cap mags or institute assault weapons ban hmm Nope and it shows across the country how the majority feels.

It's simple follow the Constitution and don't @!$%# with the Bill of Rights and we should be good and Obama and some politicians in both parties are wiping their collective asses with it.

And because you take offense to the generalization, maybe you should call out those that diminish your beliefs that portray themselves to be on your side.

I do not always tend to portray myself as "liberal"; the more extreme members of your ideology (and I mean that in a non-offensive way) would call me socialist or a "social democrat," a label I have gladly embraced to categorize myself. I do not believe that all liberals/progressives are inherently right; I know of a few on this Vine who get carried away in their apparent dislike of conservatism. Perhaps I should call them out, although I spend most of my time on this Vine arguing and debating...

Not all liberals do so; I remember a time when I was, how you say, "innocent," at least in the name-calling and insulting. But as I saw the stubbornness of many extremists on your aisle and the damage that they had inflicted and continued to inflict, I turned to hate conservatism, at least in its contemporary form.

I know the other side does it too, and that is the problem, that there are sides at all.

Perhaps we should value honor and integrity in those we choose to represent us at higher value than whether they have a D or an R. It might solve a lot of problems.

It would indeed, my good man. Unfortunately, well-meaning philosophies are often corrupted by power-hungry despots, like Josef Stalin with Marxism or George W. Bush and Adam Smith's free market idea. That is why your side condemns the left's ideas on equality and activist government and my side attacks your ideals on the superiority of free markets and the benefits of limited government. That is why, when I call myself a "socialist," I do not adhere to pure Marxist ideology; in fact I even support the basic ideals of Adam Smith and the concept of private property. However, I do tend to favor labor unions, cooperative businesses, a strong and activist government, and a social welfare state, among other things, mainly because I agree with Karl Marx's initial view that capitalism, in it's purest laissez form, is unstable. However, while he believes that one must destroy capitalism in order to protect the working classes, I believe that you can stabilize via public institutions designed to protect it from devolving into a monopolistic plutocracy with a large gap between rich and poor. That is my belief, at least.

John-737278 Said it first on this thread and I know stating this on such a partisan thread is not popular but it is worth repeating. What is not at least reasonable about the Libertarian platform? Examining our country's fiscal mess I don't think a little conservatism would be such a terrible thing. As far as social issues, basic Libertarian principles are far more accepting than even many mainstream Democrat politicians. Now I know polls are wrong and reading the collective desires of the American public can be iffy at best, but it sounds like a very viable and American approach to embrace fiscal responsibility and protect civil liberties. It is position neither of the "major" parties has realistically embraced in a long time. Focus domestically, afford civil liberties, and get our money straight... We call this whackadoodle?

Rand Paul? Who was named after Ayn Rand...

He wasn't named after Ayn Rand, you uneducated fool. His name is Randal...Rand is a nickname for short. Why would his father Ron Paul, a libertarian, name his son after an Objectivist who hated libertarianism? He wouldn't. The fact is, although most of you ignorant people don't know this, Objectivism is NOT a form of libertarianism. Only people who know absolutely nothing about politically philosophy conflate the two. Ayn Rand went out of her way to make it clear her philosophy was not libertarian and that she absolutely hated all libertarians. People who are statist drones simply see a few parallels and say "well, they must be under the same category, herp derp." Ayn Rand's works of fiction are popular books among libertarians, her non-fiction is NOT. Her actual philosophy is different in too many ways to count. Her fiction wasn't even all that well written, but because pro-liberty fiction that isn't sci-fi is so rare, libertarians read her. Personally I'd rather read a few other authors.

I'm so sick of lies and BS memes about libertarians. We don't want to starve the poor...we think the best way to bring people out of poverty is through liberty in the economic sphere (and that can mean free markets or forms of socialism - bet you didn't know that). We don't think the free market or socialism is perfect...we think they are both flawed but are better than our other finite alternatives. We don't think the world needs NO government...we think VOLUNTARY government is preferable in intention and result to compulsory government (the state). Voluntary government does not mean chaos or lack of law. And Rand Paul, who BTW I do not really like very much although I like his father a ton (Rand isn't really a pure libertarian...he's neocon on sanctions for example), was NOT named after Ayn Rand.

Randal Howard "Rand" Paul (born January 7, 1963) is the junior United States Senator for Kentucky.

Because the libertarian wing of the Party is not about that at all, Watch Rand's speech at CPAC...he is criticizing the GOP for just those policies of force. Libertarians in both Parties are against force for the most part (civil libertarian Dems and Repubs want to end the drug war and stop waging offensive, as opposed to defensive, wars..for example).

I hope you make the same argument about force not being freedom when it comes to taxes (extortion) and regulations on individuals who have not yet committed any harm.

Conervatives want liberty for the few..........

        Liberals want liberty for all..............

Neither of those two want liberty. One wants social liberty but hates economic liberty (liberals), the other wants economic liberty and hates social liberty (conservatives). Hence, libertarians are not liberals or conservatives...they consistently want liberty across the board in social and economic spheres.

How is extortion (tax) a form of liberty? How is the drug war liberty?

The only people against both of those are libertarians.

Liberals operate on jealousy of people who are more successful than them. Conservatives operate on a busy-body notion that a few social ills caused by liberty in social issues are somehow excuses for abolishing those social liberties. The jealous and the busy-body control freaks...statists, the lot of them.

According to a few posts above, Rand Paul is a physician, graduated from Duke University?? I could look it up, I guess, but I have better things to do. Anyway, as I remember, he was something like an optometrist, practicing without a proper license. His father is the M.D., but that doesn't erase the delusional streak that seems to run in the family.

2 terms of Obama show how great America can be.

After January 20, 2017, America can stay great with the next President no matter who become the President, Democrat or Republican. I am for Democrat, but a Republican can make a lot of disappointed Republicans happy - a therapy, and I am all for a Republican in the White House for the therapeutic magic.

Are you joking? What has President Obama done that is so great? Raised the national Debt to 17 trillion dollars? Passed the 100% GDP mark? I can go on for days, but I'm really interested to hear your take.

The CBO released a revised outlook on the economy in the summer of 2008 long before Obama was elected and stated that whoever was elected in November deficits would exceed at least 1 trillion a year through at least 2011 due mostly to Bush policies, the economic collapse causing revenue to drop and the millions forced onto government roles. No rational person can claim Obama is the cause of trillion dollar deficits when Congresses own budget office says that isn't true.

Whoever won the presidency in 2008 was going to face a grim fiscal situation, a fact already well known as the presidential campaign got underway. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) presented a sobering outlook in its 2008 summer update,[1] and during the autumn, the news got relentlessly worse. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) that became embroiled in the housing meltdown, failed in early September; two big financial firms — AIG and Lehman Brothers — collapsed soon thereafter; and others teetered. In December 2008, the National Bureau of Economic Research confirmed that the nation was in recession and pegged the starting date as December 2007. By the time CBO issued its new projections on January 7, 2009 — two weeks before Inauguration Day — it had already put the 2009 deficit at well over $1 trillion.[2]

The recession battered the budget, driving down tax revenues and swelling outlays for unemployment insurance, food stamps, and other safety-net programs.[3] Using CBO’s August 2008 projections as a benchmark, we calculate that the changed economic outlook alone accounts for over $400 billion of the deficit each year in 2009 through 2011 and slightly smaller amounts in subsequent years. Those effects persist; even in 2018, the deterioration in the economy since the summer of 2008 will account for over $300 billion in added deficits, much of it in the form of additional debt-service costs

Well, I understand. And I agree with you. But I am just trying to guess what voters would do in 2016. I did say the following in my post #1.1

After all, the voters will decide if they want another Martin Van Buren in 2016.

I also notice that the main reason for the rise of McCarthyism in the early 1950s is that the GOP was kept out of the White House for 20 years (1933-53). I am thinking about GOP going back to the White House as therapy. This might be the cure, or prevention care to make sure the GOP won't cause irreparable harm again, as in the case of McCarthyism. But the GOP has to earn it first. What if they can't.

Your use of Val Kilmer's character is blatant copyright violation worth $250,000 per unauthorized use; use of Holiday's name, which is probably owned by someone or some entity, is also unauthorized use and good for another $250,000 per. So that's million plus in fines here alone. Multiple violations, as here, is flagrant abuse and good for 10 plus at Leavenworth. Oooh, shot down!

Is to visit this web site, read or watch any TV news. Because when they fear one they attack and say how can you, he or she is stupid, hillbilly, you are going to lose with him/her. That my friends is fear, but when they say nice thing about them, why they know you have picked another loser. Remeber lasts weeks storys on papa bush all the nice things the libs had to say about him. Oh and bob dole, how about the ultimate John Mclean reaching across the aisle to work with the Dumbos and Mitt. Before you dopey Republick gave him the crown why to the Dumbo he was a great guy, Mass gov who started barry care, a real nice guy. That's what Hitler and Stalin did for their people. And then you have the muslim countries like Iran who only allow Islam to be practiced and arrest anybody who tries to practice any other religion like the pastor who's in jail right now and he's a US citizen and our administration didn't even bother putting any pressure on Iran for his release. American Center For Law and Justice Chief Council Jay Sekulow said the State Department was awol and called their absence offensive. Even the European Union called for his release to the UN council and our administration didn't even show up for the hearing. It's scary to see all the communistic comments on this vine speaking against freedom of religion and the right to worship and calling people of faith brainwashed. Who's brainwashed here? One of the main reasons our country was founded and the reason people come here still today is because they want to be able to practice their religion without being persecuted. You are incorrect Anthony. Racism is not a conservative value. The GOP is no longer racist, it is a new party of proper conservative traditional values including marriage with a husband wife based family including interracial couples. The GOP, particularly the tea party wing, wishes to remove the domination of the individual by the institution and the domination of our future generations by debt. That means tearing down the domination of people by government and the giant corporations. It is not about racism.

Well we are finding out more and more and none of it is good. Gonna cost us dearly, well over a trillion, get more paper work for the health care industry, more cost, and less health care. How about the Wasserman Shultz. Remember the presidential candidate Edwards and the Democrat rising star Weiner? Then there is weird Al Franken and the jail bound Jackson. Remember the two responsible for the economic collapse, Dodd and Frank. How about the old murder Kennedy who was a drunk womanizer. War against women lol. Oh well thanks Red Wing Fan got a laugh and got carried away. Sorry if I hurt any ones feelings.

Rand Paul thinks that civil rights are a states rights issue, opposes abortions and GLBT marriage, and believes that corpoations will self-regulate if they are given the chance. I cant wait to see his brand of TEAparty idiocy get crushed like a bug if he manages to run in 2016.

The fact that I agree with him on defense and the USA PATRIOT ACT only means that even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut if given enough chances.

Actually RON PAUL was the least racist over anybody in the last election. He wanted to set free every non-violent drug dealer from prison, you know, for VICTIM-LESS CRIMES. Those people would be overwhelmingly black and hispanic. Everybody else wanted to keep these people locked up for victim-less crimes. How many minorities are sitting in prison right now for selling marijuana, which has been proven to be less dangerous than alcohol. Anybody who supports drug laws on marijuana is the REAL RACISTS.

John Huntsman was the only candidate in the GOP primaries that I might have given a second look. All the others were just so far over the hill in the Twilight Zone that there was no way I could ever, in good conscious, vote for them. But like several have said, Huntsman was herded off the political trail by the RWNJs so fast that he never had a chance. Since then I've watched his interviews on TV. He isn't a mega-watt personality but he displays knowledge and ideas which are what we need in this country, not just another photo-ready politician (actually, I find Huntsman much more photogenic than the one picked to lead the GOP in the last election). Sorry he didn't get a real chance at the nomination.

CPAC is a gathering of out of touch people who still think that the American people embraces their19th century ideology. Blabbering on and on about the people's constitution is nothing but a cover for their unacceptable ideas. This is not the 18th century, and like it or not, time and circumstances do change. Hillary will win in a landslide in 2016.

                              To Dee Stringer

Every Presidents kids in this modern era went to private schools that were sanctioned by the Secret Service. All First Families are unfortunately burdened with having to work through the Secret Service in matters of protection. They are not privy to doing just what they wish.

Many privileged children of wealthy Republicans DO NOT attend public school, the main reason is that their parents can afford to send them to private schools. Of course, if Republicans got their way with the voucher system getting approved the public till would end up subsidizing their private choice. Another benefit for the rich which the Republican Party graciously supports. It's the same reason that the Republicans are always in favor of cuts to education and doing away with the Department of Education. They have no need for it they can send their kids to private schoiols!

Your whining is nothing more than approving subsidies for the rich! Get a life!!

Minnesotan - I send my kids to private schools because not only our my inner city schools a complete failure, they are extremely dangerous and suck up endless taxpayer dollars to produce crap. It costs more to school an inner city child because of the failure of the family and social issues that HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH POVERTY! Good kids from poor families are stuck in the socialized education cesspool, another progressive failure. Teachers cannot make a difference and like all progressive policies the results are opposite to the intention. I am sick of working my rear end off to subsidize a socialized government's failure and corrupt test tube politics. The progressive social scientists in Washington, DC have increased poverty and squashed opportunity.

Poor Dee Stringer, what a jealous vindictive and typical Republican hypocrite you must be.

The President and Mrs. Obama PAY for private school for their daughters. THEY PAY FOR IT.

But you, hypocrite teabagger that you are demand that the public provide tax dollars through vouchers to send your brats to private school.

Get off your butt, get a job, quit demanding that we liberals pay for some religious dreck to be taught to your spawn AND PAY FOR IT YOURSELF!

                              God, that felt good.

Ballerina, tinkerbell or whatever, what is the difference in protecting a child by the Secret Service at a public school and a private school, both are schools kids go there? It is just Obama is a hypocrite and the left justifies it any way they can. And, black kids were the ones that vouchers helped in DC but Obama is in with the teacher's unions so he is not in favor of vouchers.

Look at that, Dee, our resident teabagger mental midget is back.

Why don't you first figure out what you are angry about, moron. That the BLACK President's children, who have special risks that your brats don't have Secret Service protection, or whatever it is you are trying to say about D.C. the teacher's union, or the current paranoid teachings of Glenn Beck.

Because that is what this is all about. You have ZERO credibility.

The President and Mrs. Obama, just like other WHITE Presidents before them, chose to put their children at Sidwell Friends, a school your spawn would not be eligible for because you do have to have some intelligence to be there.

Isn't it so ODD that the only time this is an issue is when the BLACK, Democratic President makes the same choice?

                              Now, Quit embarrassing yourself.

                              God, I hate stupid people.

Extreme far-right winger candidates are not going to sell the GOP/CPAC ticket. I get the straw poll concept. But Rand Paul? Guess we should not be surprised.

To draw voters the GOP will have to become more centrist.

The GOP tried centrist/moderate with Romney and lost. They need to come in to this century, quit thumping their bibles, uphold individual rights - ALL INDIVIDUALS, pass objective laws and be consistent. The list can go on for a while but that's a good start.

With the exception of Chris Christy, the GOP should flush everyone down the drain (or toilet if you like that better). A clean slate, a bunch of newcomers who see the possibility of politics through being 'real' would be a great change for this country. Until then, I'm sticking with the Democrats.

There are a lot of up and comers in the GOP that never get air time but should. They need to distance themselves from the TeaParty baggage and let in some fresh air. I so hope that they can become a party that is relevant at some point again. Differing thoughts help us to come up with better solutions. However, hating those that are in office and using your vote to go against anything is NOT a solution.

It doesn't matter what she voted for. Had she or any other Democrat been President the invasion of Iraq never would have happened and you know it. A president convincing enough Democrats to support such a war doesn't make that war a Democratic war. Both Iraq and Afghanistan are Bush's wars as are his tax cuts and his drug plan. A shame he never bothered to pay for any of them.

Why did President Clinton do this in 1998?

Earlier today, I ordered America’s armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq’s nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.

Their purpose is to protect the national interest of the United States, and indeed the interests of people throughout the Middle East and around the world.

Saddam Hussein must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons.

Why did President Clinton sing this into law?

Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 - Declares that it should be the policy of the United States to seek to remove the Saddam Hussein regime from power in Iraq and to replace it with a democratic government.

Authorizes the President, after notifying specified congressional committees, to provide to the Iraqi democratic opposition organizations: (1) grant assistance for radio and television broadcasting to Iraq; (2) Department of Defense (DOD) defense articles and services and military education and training (IMET); and (3) humanitarian assistance, with emphasis on addressing the needs of individuals who have fled from areas under the control of the Hussein regime. Prohibits assistance to any group or organization that is engaged in military cooperation with the Hussein regime. Authorizes appropriations.

Hillary's hair is too bad to be President. Long and greasy is not a good look. And she cant sing. She can cackle, but she cant sing. And she is sooo tired. In 4 more years, she may even loose her looks. Who can say.

But, she has been an amazing woman and a real credit to our country. I wish she had been president instead of Obama. But then, I wish I had be president instead of Obama.

Hillary Clinton who voted to go into the Iraq war and voted for the PATRIOT Act TWICE.

So did all the Republicans at the time.

i kinda hope she won't. i'd like another much younger democrat. she'll be in her 70's and she's got health issues. plus, i didn't like that she put up with hubby's sexual indiscretions. i feel she's really only interested in hillary and hillary's power. yes, she's smart and she's done a good job; but i question her personal integrity and most of all WE NEED YOUNGER PEOPLE WHO ARE TRULY MORE IN TOUCH WITH THE TIMES.

Slodon: Clinton like Obama and Israel know you don't have to send in 100,000 troops to take out a threat. Drones and Cruise missiles work just as well. Bush didn't want to eliminate a threat in Iraq he wanted to take out Saddam and finish what daddy didn't.

The problem with drones is that you don't get a chance to collect any intel. Hillary will have to contend with her Secutary of State blunders. Of course liberals will see those Libya killings as one of her success storys.

Liberals no more see Benghazi as an Obama or Hillary success then we see the thousands who died while Bush was president we just don't attempt to make some political point out of it. As for your drone comments you right wingers always have an excuse. We had to invade for intel? Get real.

Benghazi was nothing more than a CIA failure. The Benghazi site was not treated as a consulate, it was treated as a CIA safe house and operations center for future North African CIA Operations. I am still trying to understand what a US Ambassador was doing at a CIA Op Center. I would also like to know what the al Qaeda team went there to get, or prevent. Sooner or later the real story of the Benghazi Operation will come out, Hollywood will make a movie about the CIA North African Surge, or WikiLeaks will release the facts regarding the attack and the death of four Americans, and which US Agency each of them really worked for in Benghazi.

Straw is the only thing this little pimp will win, same with Rubio. Conservatives are nothing but goddamn frauds and troublemakers....and have done extraordinary damage to the United States - and the world. In some ways, they are worse than the Taliban and other Islamic extremists...
