Obama agenda: Weaning off big oil

USA Today: “President Obama wrapped up a series of meetings with Congress on Thursday, the latest phase in a reach-out-to-Republicans effort marked by stark differences over taxes, the budget and other issues. Senate Republicans who spoke with the president said they appreciated the visit, but repeated their opposition to new taxes in any new debt reduction plan.”

The AP: “President Barack Obama is pushing Congress to authorize more federally funded research into clean energy technologies that can wean automobiles off oil. Obama proposed the idea of an energy security trust last month in his State of the Union address, but he was putting a price tag on the idea during a trip Friday to the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago — $2 billion over 10 years. The White House says the research would be paid for with revenue from federal oil and gas leases on offshore drilling and would not add to the deficit.”

USA Today: “President Obama will call on Congress on Friday to set aside $2 billion over the next decade to support research of advanced vehicle technology, according to White House officials.”

Never mind trying to teach GOP anything, this person is not coachable and unable to learn. Renewable energy doesn't protect the big donors to the republican party, therefore it is bad. It is way past time to bid good bye to our obsession with carbon and move forward to a cleaner planet. Tea bags be damned.

This argument that competition in the private sector fixes all problems, belies the fact that obesity, for example, is out of control in this country, due to private industry putting sugar, added salt and refined flour into most food products. So, the free market created the conditions that lead to the obesity epidemic, then it created a whole industry around diabetes management to deal with the obesity problem - that's not really what I'd call progress.

I am not in favor of government intervention into all things, obviously, but putting some money into researching new energy technology seems like a good use of taxpayers' dollars.

Handing out money for research with no oversight is Not a good use of taxpayer money. Please look up L.G. Chem. It is stories such as these that make people absolutely crazy.

Usually the USA leads the world in the development of new things that make life better for everyone. President Obama sees that we are falling behind and are NOT leading in the drive for alternative energy.

What is wrong with clean, renewable, sustainable, home produced energy anyway? I have solar on my house and my power bill is extremely low. The power company basically buys power from me and all I pay is a little in fees paid by all power users and producers.

Oil drove the 20th Century but now, as supplies dwindle and are located in countries that hate us, we need to seriously consider a new type of energy. This new energy would be safe for the environment, wouldn't pollute, and could be made cheap enough that businesses would not have to pay extremely high rates for energy thus saving money with that reflected on their bottom line.

Solar, wind, hydrogen, wave motion and other natural sources are available on Earth. We just need to learn how to harness and use that energy and do so before the fossil fuel runs out. I want to see the US be the leader in this effort. California has already made it a law that 20% of the energy used in the state must be from these alternative sources in just a decade. There will be money to be made there just as in oil.

The need for buggywhips is still around for the few hundred carrages giving rides to tourists and by the Amish but most of the nation has moved beyond them. The buggywhip industry thrived in the 19th Century and died in the 20th Century. Does anyone really miss it? The same will be with the oil industry as we continue on through the 21st Century and beyond.

Time to wake up, folks! One day, the oil will be gone! Then what?

Clean energy IS the way to go, and right now! Wait, and we get passed by!!!
