Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, will re-emerge into the public spotlight with a speech on Friday before the Conservative Political Action Conference, a gesture that has left some Republicans wondering why.
Romney will speak to activists for the first time since suffering a decisive defeat versus President Barack Obama in last fall’s election.
And he’ll do it before a gathering that has witnessed some of the most enduring moments of Romney’s political career: He twice won CPAC’s closely watched straw poll, he ended his 2008 campaign there, and it was at the confab in 2012 that Romney termed himself a “severely conservative” governor – a characterization which Democrats would turn back against him over the course of last year’s campaign.
And while it’s unknown what Romney might say during his speech on Friday, his speech before CPAC has prompted muted bewilderment among Romney’s own allies and conservative activists alike.

The former Massachusetts governor, who turned 66 on Tuesday, had kept a deliberately low profile after Nov. 6 of last year. Romney met once with Obama and gathered with campaign alumni this winter, but has otherwise avoided a spotlight that wasn’t always kind of him throughout last year’s campaign.
He’s only started to re-emerge in recent weeks. Romney gave an interview to “Fox News Sunday” earlier this month, and joined the executive board of his son Tagg’s investment company. Romney’s speech on Friday is his return to the public square, though it’s not clear how much interest conservatives will have in what he’ll have to say.
“What can he offer them?” asked Reagan biographer Craig Shirley. “Based on his interview I saw last weekend, not much. When he ran, he didn’t seem to understand much of this country.”
Romney allies also privately express their misgivings about Romney’s choice of CPAC to stage his national comeback. Its penchant for red-meat conservative rhetoric could make Romney still seem bitter about the election, and scuttle his chance to builder a broader, statesmanlike profile.
Moreover, Romney had occasionally struggled from a rocky relationship with conservatives throughout his campaign. Conservative critics had often been quick to criticize the Republican ticket for any perceived tack toward the political middle in the general election. And following the election, many of Romney’s detractors were unsparing in their criticism of the Republican nominee, in particular his surreptitiously-recorded comments about the “47 percent” of Americans whom he called dependent on government.
Former Gov. Mitt Romney calls the controversial statement "unfortunate" and admitted that it was "harmful" to his campaign.
The former GOP nominee’s decision to speak at CPAC, though, likely reflects his close relationship with Al Cardenas, a supporter of Romney’s who heads the American Conservative Union, which organizes CPAC.
And not all Romney supporters think the decision to speak at CPAC is a bad idea, either.
“I think it’s a very good sign for the movement that Mitt Romney will be there,” said former Rep. Vin Weber, R-Minn., who served as an informal adviser to the Romney campaign. “A lot of people kind of expected that Romney would move back to the moderate Republican middle, which wouldn’t be a good thing for him – it would make him look cynical.”

This guy isn't thinking of running for POTUS again, is he? One thing that is perfectly clear about this CPAC is that Republicans are the ultimate slow learners.
It's not about what Romney can offer, and it never has been. What has he ever had to offer anyone beyond the investors of Bain Capital? The man is a dyed-in-the-wool vulture capitalist. If he comes out of his self-imposed exile to speak, you can bet he has an ulterior motive and it's most likely related to the love of his life: no, not Ann...making money.
Romney is the ultimate taker. He's looking to make some big bucks. If not for himself, then for his sons.
I'd prefer he stay out of politics and public policy entirely. The GOP has a fetish about beating dead horses though. It seems they can't find any fresh meat.

Clear Channel is the home of right wing radio including Hannity and Limbaugh.

Palin is there, too. That should tell you everything you need to know about how disembodied the GOP has become.

If the GOP thinks that would fly, then it is really time to fold their tent and don't worry about who is under it when they do it. There were at least two other candidates who ran for the GOP nomination who were 100% better than Mitt the Twit and they didn't get one ounce of support from the party. They could have had the WH and if they missed that opportunity then given the same folks are in charge it will happen again in 2016.
Romney revealed his true nature in the 47% tape many times over. Talking about touring a factory Bain owned in China, he described the worker's barracks: bunks stacked three high, one bathroom for 20 people, barbed wire and armed guards, workers who were paid a pittance, who never lifted their heads or made eye contact...and he thought it was great! He actually claimed to believe the guide who told him the barbed wire and guns were to keep others out.
Did he never ask why the factory had such a high suicide rate?
Romney is either delusional, stupid, or just plain evil. Or all of the above.
He's the ultimate GOP (Greedy Old Prick), so maybe that's why he was invited to CPAC.

We all fill up our income taxes , however, millions of people receive their returns, and the 47 % receive more money in return that what they pay in taxes, got it.

That is completely inaccurate. While many owe zero in tax money to the Federal
government few get back more than they paid. About 99% pay payroll tax and get
zero of that back.

I'm seeing so many leftists support Obama no matter what he does, when the very same actions, if occurring under a Republican would have them screaming bloody murder. It's truly odd, and proof of the devastating power of brainwashing and propaganda.
For example: The Patriot Act was bad, and we heard plenty of criticism about it while Bush was in office, but Obama has extended it and expanded its scope and power with the addition of NDAA and we hear not a peep from the blind sheep.
If concerned Americans were angry at governmental powers allowing telephone wire taps, they should be irate at the powers of using a drone strike to KILL AMERICAN CITIZENS ON U.S. SOIL! All they have to do is deem one a terrorist.
Did you know that while we are hearing sob stories about budget cuts from sequestration, the DHS has recently purchased 1.8 BILLION rounds of ammunition, as well as mine-proof and .50 cal-proof armored personnel carriers? Hell I pay thousands in each year & I still get a little back most years. I see people pay in little and because they have 1 or 2 kids they get back everything they paid in plus extra because of the earned income credits.

Please reread ... I said “payroll tax” which is not “income tax”. Payroll Tax is only the withholdings for SS and Medicare that everyone pays because employers must withhold it and it is not refundable

Payroll taxes are the state, federal, social security and Medicare taxes that are deducted from your paycheck. Dennis is correct. He never specified only federal taxes.
The whole conversation is based on income taxes and Dennis turned the page to include the other taxes no one gets back any on. Steve is also correct. Dennis deflected to other taxes and with the amounts of the credits that 47% get, I would venture to say much of those contributions are also offset by their return.

For those of you not living in Florida, Jeb Bush makes Mittens look like a choir boy. If you collect no taxes, how do you plan to pay the state's bills?

Since there are not nor have been 60 democrats in the senate anything proposed by them can just be filibustered. So no laws get through the senate without both sides, to have control a party would need 60 members.

The argument has been that 47% of Americans (keep up with me OK, we're talking about Americans) are moochers. By the simplest definition (trying to keep it easy on your brain), a moocher is someone who takes all and gives nothing in return. Never paying back, or contributing anything. To base who is or isn't a mooch on the amount of FEDERAL taxes they have paid is ridiculous. I hope I haven't caused you to have a synaptic overload.
And learn how to phrase an insult properly. You should have said drivel (to talk stupidly and carelessly) instead of dribble. Oh and I got much amusement at how you changed from preparing for Armageddon to being a 'PREPPER' (whatever the hell that is) by merely doing day to day shopping.
And after all that you end as weak as you began. You're yammering and jabbering instead of saying something even slightly interesting. It shows that your act of trying to dismiss me is merely a way for you to extract yourself from an argument. Republicans will only regain white house when they learn that Americans are fed up with their rich guy policies. We are tired of you attacking middle and lower class people's money and subsidies before you clean up the mess in foreign policy. And look at the crazy grants you give out. I just read in my paper about a town near me getting a big grant to use for "beautification" (sidewalks, curbs and drainage) if they will put in bike lanes on a street that will narrow it down to 3 lanes and congest traffic during peak hours, when this said city already has tons of bike trails, etc. Everything comes with a "catch" from the feds.
Lets ask Mr Romney about the 47%, which included his grandfather who was in Mexico when they had a little revolution and the Mormons wanted out. That is after his Grandfather had gone to Mexico so he could have more than one wife. When the Mexican Revolution started the Mormons were not financially better off, so our Congress passed a bill that helped them money wise to get out. I wonder if they ever paid it back. That is why Mitt ended being born in the US of A instead of Mexico liked he wished he was, but then I would want to see the birth certificate to make sure he was a citizen of the US of A.

Of course this is true but we do have to pay for 2 continued wars and a unfunded medicare drug plan that does not allow any negotiation with big pharma. It is funny how we forget there are wars still having to be paid for. We actually stopped paying our debts back in 1980 when it became fashionable for people to believe they don't have to pay taxes to live here. Of course the massive deregulation ideas did not help either.

Romney's tax returns showed that he gave millions to charity. How much do you give? And before you open your mouth and show how stupid you are by saying "it is a tax thing" I hope you understand how donations work for taxes. Even though a portion of the donated money will be not subjected to taxes, you still will not save as much in your taxes as you initially gave up, so once again miss Kaybee, how much do you give to charity, as opposed to "the ultimate taker?"

Romney buys his self-importance. I was extremely disappointed in his lack of resolve as an allegedly valid contender for the presidential race. His actions demonstrated that his brotherhood loyalty as a Harvard Law grad was too important to him and overshadowed any genuine success to be elected. It is evident that Romney wanted Barack Obama to become president.
Romney bought the opposing candidacy and blocked actual competition out which handed Obama the Oval Office.
Harvard likes to believe that it runs this nation. I think it's time to remind Harvard that there are other excellent schools out there that do not condone their incessant practice of making fools out of the American public for sport before the international community, especially with such critically important matters as the national debt.
In fact, perhaps the United States citizenry might consider the potential for suing these Ivy League colleges that are cranking out such incompetent presidents that destroy our national resolve, and conclusively expose this corruption to prevent others from continuing the practice.
Romney's first words should be, "I will show my income tax returns the next time out".. I mean come on, here is a man running for the POTUS, and would not show his income tax returns for the last 10 years. Did he think the American people are d*m fools?
