OXON HILL, Md. -- Rand Paul had tough words for his own party, describing it as “stale and moss covered” before conservatives at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
“The Republican Party has to change by going forward to the classical and timeless ideas enshrined in our Constitution,” the Kentucky senator said here. He added, “We need a Republican Party that shows up on the Southside of Chicago and shouts at the top of our lungs 'We are the party of jobs and opportunity. The GOP is the ticket to the middle class.' The GOP of old has grown stale and moss-covered. I don't think we need to name any names here, do we?”
The critique of the GOP received resounding applause from this crowd, but the reception for Paul, whose tone could be described as solemn, wasn’t full-throated. His speech, in fact, highlighted the difficulty he would face if he were to make an expected 2016 run.
Paul, the heir to his father Ron’s “torch of liberty,” tried here to straddle the line between his staunch libertarianism -- which includes dovish views on foreign policy, privacy rights and even drug use -- with his conservative line on spending that principally makes him a darling of these activists.
Many here praised Paul for his modern-era record 13-hour filibuster. But not all did so on the substance.
“I have a message for the President, a message that is loud and clear, a message that doesn't mince words,” Paul began.
“Don't drone me, bro!” interrupted one young supporter.
The crowd laughed; Paul leaned back, took it in, and joked that that was not exactly the message.
But Paul only received tepid applause as he made his way through the opening section of his speech about civil liberties and drone use. Paul has raised questions about the administration’s contention that drones could be used against Americans acting as enemy combatants on American soil.
“Good intentions are not enough,” Paul said was his message for President Barack Obama. There were just a smattering of applause.
“If we allow one man to charge Americans as enemy combatants and indefinitely detain or drone them, then what exactly is it our brave young men and women are fighting for?” Paul said, and again just tepid applause.
“Our Bill of Rights is what defines us and makes us exceptional,” Paul said to polite applause.
On reaching out to youth, Paul said, “They want leaders that won't feed them a line of crap or sell them short. They aren't afraid of individual liberty.” Just a light round of claps.
Paul was much better received when criticizing the president for spending, taxes, the sequester, and cutting foreign aid and waste – instead of White House tours.
“The only stimulus ever proven to work is leaving more money in the hands of those who earned it!” Paul said.
“Only in Washington could an increase of $7 trillion in spending over a decade be called a cut,” Paul said of the sequester. And added to raucous applause: “Meanwhile the President found an extra $250 million to send to Egypt. … I say-not a penny more to countries that burn our flag.”
Paul contended that instead of eliminating White House tours, he should cut research for “monkeys on meth,” robotic squirrels, and menus for colonization on Mars that were developed by college students given all-expense paid trips to Hawaii.
“Mr. President, maybe we could have cut robotic squirrels before White House tours,” Paul said.

I am not worried about your hair or his. Rand Paul's filibuster was great. If anything is a turn off to Republicans, it is their budget cutting obsession. I would rather they drone on about drones than drone on about budgets. Who cares. There has been debt and deficit since I was a kid, and it is just a number. I do care about getting hit by a drone or America being turned into a war zone. I suspect most people, even if secretly, want entitlements untouched. If one were to cut anything, I can agree to cut silly things like robotic squirrels and money to countries that hate us. But if we were to elect Republicans, could we trust them to only cut the dumb stuff?...probably not. They seem so anxious to get their hands on granny's Medicare and Social Security. Truth is, I don't like either party anymore.

He is not about social issues that blind American's judgment. He is about saving our children's future so that they don't have to come of age in an America that is broke for a century. "Poor" old people need to pay for their sins of ignorant electing, not their offspring. We are spending our children's money, not ours. Rand Paul knows this but mainstream America turns their head for selfish social reasons like gay marriage or abortion rights. The injustice of these inequalities pales in comparison to what we are doing to our own children. This is pathetic.

I will have to say that while I have not been a huge Rand Paul fan I will give him credit. The nerve it takes to throw it in the face of everyone you might want help from in the future to tell them that their ideas are stupid and outdated takes some balls. And his filibuster making enemies on both sides of the aisle took just as much.
Maybe that is what the people of this country need more of, representatives who represent the 70-80% of us in the middle. It should be us against our government not against one another. It should be what we can do for each other, instead of what government can get for us from others. It should be about preserving our liberty while holding those that would infringe upon it at bay. It is not the call of one man. Such an action would occur because of developed intelligence which obviously would involve many others. Your point is well taken. However, why not consider ending the insider trading exemption for Congress instead? At present, Congress can own stock - and trade stock - in companies that would benefit from legislation and government contracts. Even before they are announced. So the deal is...you support our contract being approved and we give you shares. Does that sound at all like a cookie jar for lobbyists?

The thing that people don't understand about this action, because they don't understand the stock market, is that it is effectively stealing.
You don't just buy or sell a stock independently. When you know what the stock is going to do; eg Sheldon Whitehouse selling hundreds of thousands worth of portfolio before the '07 crash, you are selling the stock to someone that does NOT have your insider information, so you are stealing from that/those buyers.
It's a real scumbag move, and should certainly be jail-time for any representative of the people who steal from the people. But then, they are special, they must be, because the same idiots vote the same thieves in every time.

Easy, two words: "Social Darwinism" (look it up).
It is difficult to find a political philosophy that has no good points. Rand Paul is a case in point. I happen to agree with a few of his positions on social tolerance. But I disagree with most of economic talking points because when you do the math his ideas would destroy the economy, not salvage it. Governments will always have some debt. It is inevitable. It is not debt that is the problem. It is the size of the debt. It will take more than budget cuts to resolve this problem. You must increase revenue if you have any expectation of reducing the debt. Otherwise, you just continue to pay the interest without ever touching the debt.
It is difficult to have a political philosophy that has no redeeming points, but the right wing GOP is working at it really hard. Keep it up and we will soon be a one party system.

Newflash, the baby boomer generation ALREADY MADE that decision, and they decided to retire on the backs of their children and grandchildren.
Is it that generation that saw fit, starting in the 1980's, to start electing a bunch of "cut taxes at all costs, debt and deficits be damned" and "Wall St. will take care of us" politicians that tripled the national debt in the 80's, doubled it in the 90's, and doubled it again in the 2000's (and it's on pace to double AGAIN in the 2010's).
So again, that decision was made more than three decades ago, and now we see these blue hairs at Tea Party rallies decrying the National Debt, pointing their fingers at the younger generation to call them "lazy," and completely absolving themselves of any blame for voting in a nonstop parade of political clowns.

Welfare is what is depleting the fund. I figure about 600 billion between welfare payments, and healthcare for welfare. And that does not count any state programs in place. So if the total is around a trillion thats around $3300 for every man, woman and child in the country being given to the small part of society that does not pay taxes. The seniors did their job filling the fund, but you are correct that they voted for idiots that gave it all to those that are not productive members of society. It is welfare that has made it unsustainable.

The Civil Rights Act was a mandate to force people to cooperate and to force them to change their thinking. Many scholars and many blacks today believe they would have been far better off with an initial 'separate but equal policy', allowing blacks to receive education and other services on equal terms, rising over time to a status that would have been easier to attain and having far superior outcomes resulting in true equality. Force creates force, not cooperation. It takes time for views to change and greater time when prior force was imposed (southern states secession from the Union leading to the Civil War and a southern democrat racist agenda along with the KKK that blocked rights for blacks until Eisenhower), but they do, as we see over the course of our history regarding many social issues. Force divides, it doesn't bring people together, as evidenced in an ongoing and unsettled debate over inequality regarding race in America today. Why is it England, who had slavery, was able quickly, efficiently and effectively to settle issues of racism in the 1800’s, while America continues to flounder?

Your beliefs boggle the mind. I doubt if there are a half dozen black people in the country who would reject the Civil Rights Act. As for believing that the segregation and racism would have resolved "over time" all on its own; it had been 100 years since the Civil War with absolutely no progress whatsoever. How long were people supposed to wait for equal opportunity and education and freedom? Like it or not, the enactment of the Civil Rights Act did result in more opportunities and equality and many, if not all, of the black people in leadership positions today got there because the doors were no longer locked and barred against them. They got to buy houses in good neighborhoods and they got jobs and education and hope. Look at your television set. Look at the black newsmen and women who never would have been hired under the old apartheid system. Look at the lawyers, the cops, the teachers who would never have been hired under the old system. Look at the truck drivers and the accountants and the architects and the business leaders who never would have been given a chance without the Civil Rights Act.
But most of all, look at the increase in tolerance and acceptance. You can legislate hate away. It doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen and it does work. I don't believe that we could have ever come this far without the Civil Rights Act. Those black kids never would have been admitted to the colleges and universities to get the education to get the jobs. And I wouldn't have black neighbors, because they wouldn't have been allowed to buy homes in my neighborhood without the legislation that makes it illegal to refuse an offer based on race alone.

The hate is still there but greatly reduced. I have several White neighbors who are do not think I am their equal. They are often very rude. Everytime I make an improvement to my home, one neighbor goes out of her way to call it cheap. Another neighbor asked me to babysit her future child. I ignore these people and focus on the many nice and polite people in my community.
I am very much in favor of a strong federal government. It protects me from my state governmet (Florida) which would take away my rights in a second, if they could.
And exactly which part of this is incorrect? To continue what the Paul side believes (and have said) would you eat in a place that didn't serve everyone? Or would you go down the street to the restaurant that chose to be integrated and show your support by giving THEM your dollar? I was just thinking the other day about the similarities between the current parties status in the U.S. and the time spent in co-existence by the Neanderthals and the more modern and adaptable Cro-Magnon... History certainly does have a way of repeating itself and the competetive exclusion principle is as solid as fossilized bone.
I'm thinking of mounting an expedition to their last known active encampment up near the CPAC caves... It may be one of our last opportunities to observe them in the wild. Even those there are not genetically unique any longer as we've bred with the species for centuries, but I understand they adhere strongly to the old ways.
