President Obama heads to Capitol Hill to meet with House Republicans, but perhaps too much is made of so-called "charm offensives." The structure and numbers of divided government are far more important. NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss.

Anyone else as tired as I am on the derogatory "charm offensive" meme?
First the MSM falsely whined for years about the President not being all warm & fuzzy enough with the opposition.
Then when he reaches out to them, they still complain with cutesy misleading headlines.
Since when did it become expected of the President having to "hold hands" and sing Kumbya with those who plotted from day ONE to make him a one term President!
Obama won fair & square and shouldn't have to ass kiss to get something done in DC!
Sorry Mark & Domenico, I thought better of you two!
Feisty, YES!!!!!!!! I'm sick to death of it. Ryan's little quip yesterday about "that wasn't very charming" made me want to smack that ugly little smirk off of his lyin face!
It's how they roll Feisty......Always trying to shape the discussion, as if to encourage the right-wing bloggers.
As President Obama supports, we are 'punked' everyday on this blog.......hence, I refrain from posting so much.
Obama won fair & square and shouldn't have to ass kiss to get something done in DC!
Couldn't agree more Feisty.
The big news is President Obama it sounds like is willing to forego the Grand Bargain if the GOP insists on entitlement cuts. As he said last night:
“If we controlled spending and we have a smart entitlement package, then potentially what you have is balance — but it is not balance to, on the backs of the poor, the elderly, students who need student loans, families that have disabled kids. That is not the right way to balance,” he said.
Beautifully stated.
Think Progress:
Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) made a startling admission on CNN’s Starting Point on Wednesday morning, telling host Soledad O’Brien that Republicans are not concerned about how they cut spending — or the millions of people who suffer as a result — so long as they achieve a balanced budget.

Such callous people in the GOP.
Happy to see on the other hand so many democrats promising to fight to keep Social Security and Medicare and other vital programs.
The gentleman who took the 47% video of Mitt Romney will be interviewed this evening on Ed's program.
But he does have to lead and that entails a little ass kissing when the only direction the ass kissing was supposed to go, in his mind, was to his ass. This is a teaching/learning moment for him. He has to give.
And by your above statement you, and evidently he, thinks he was elected King or Dictator (fair and square? Okay, there is a blast from the brats in the neighborhood playground). Just because he won the office does NOT immediately mandate that everyone bow down. It has been four years plus. The honeymoon is over and his agenda is not the only way to get things done.
I think it is a good thing for him and the country to humble himself a bit (although I am sure in his mind he still has this little voice saying "suckers" half the time and "dang it why won't they do what I want" the other half). It is the first time in the four years I can say he actually is acting as though he wants to be a leader. Whether it plays out or not, different story.
Big Eddies interview with the 47% video guy should be great....very revealing.
The gentleman who took the 47% video of Mitt Romney will be interviewed this evening
Another Liberal Hero is born and exploited, until you folks don't need him/her anymore.
Thenyou turn on them.
You'd think it would not be that hard of a follow up question of any MSM personality to ask Congressman Ryan or any other GOP member, 'exactly what charming thing(s) have you done towards the President'?
Charm has a giver and a receiver and it flows both ways.
I'm not quite certain what is the difference between Larry Kudlow saying to Ryan that his budget was really sticking it to the President and the Ryan saying yes... but yet the GOP goes on air and bemoans that President is allegedly sticking his finger in the eye of the GOP.
There is squat sincere about Ryan or his budget.
Talk to the Hand: He does lead and has been leading for his entire presidency. The GOP do not want to work with him. They only want what they want and nothing less and they don't care who they hurt along the way, which means the poor, the working and middle classes. Veterans. Health care. Education. Infrastructure. That's the president they want. A president to screw us all.
They are despicable people.
"Charm Offense" is overrated, if not downright disgusting. Obama has repeatedly invited these GOP/TP politicians to the White House, but the best they can do is meet him at some obscure backroom in a restaurant, away from the prying eyes of their constituents. Apparently, they don't like the 'color' in the White House.
Talk to the Hand
"I think it is a good thing for him and the country..."
=================
Funny, I didn't see you mention Republicans in Congress having to be part of this 'humbling' exercise...but yet the President and the rest of the Country should. Nice.
I would agree the "charm offensive" label is annoying, derogatory even - another meaningless media catch-phrase that clouds and trivializes.
However, despite President Obama's victory, he remains only one cog in a multi-gear system. He is facing colossal opposition (the cause of this resistance, a subject to itself, not relevant to this argument). In order to be effective, he very well may need to, as you put it Feisty, ass kiss. Politics are often not pretty and I believe history reveals effective presidents play the political game in all its ugliness and glory, and play it well. Look at President Lincoln.
Despite my personal right leaning political convictions, Mr. Obama is my President. I wish him success. He may have to become more of a player to be successful, considering what he is up against. I do not believe he is out to make us all Commies any more than the right is out to deliberately destroy America.
Feisty--I picture the GOP leaders (such as they are) sitting around wondering what else they can skewer the President for and get the media to jump on the band wagon. A few years ago it was that the President didn't have a jobs plan. So he addressed Congress, made concrete jobs proposals (including items that the GOP had supported in the past) and then the House wouldn't pass any of the proposals. This "charm offensive" is more of the same.
People who think nothing of letting their fellow citizens suffer during the worst economy since the Depression are not going to respond to "charm".
I keep waiting for someone/anyone to ask Lyin Ryan, besides repealing Obamacare, what exactly is in his Path to Austerity Budget!....
Let him say what his Path proposes to cut...Tell the American People what cuts, Lyin Ryan......Bet he won't say!
He did say "He/we (TeaPeople) won't give up on destroying the healthcare system"......Nice!
I would like to know what the secret is to leading the party of "OH HELL NO YOU DON'T"?
Talk to the Hand
President Polk never kissed anyone's ass ... he just lined them up and kicked them into the Pacific and they were humbled. :-)
Pat, can you throw out the old talking points and see that this is a turning point for all of DC please?
And Allen, I should have worded it a bit differently. This is a good experience for him (since his whole attitude is that of the fair and square and it's my playground now). As a secondary thought, the country will be better off. The GOP will be much more receptive to this seemingly new demeanor and attitude and I expect them also to get of the high horse and look on both sides of the table. Just because I didn't mention the GOP doesn't mean I won't hold them with a little contempt should the status quo go forward.
LOL BCWC : )
Ask President Obama. I think he gets it now.
And Talk thinks we should all bend over and kiss his ass - well folks, that ain't going to happen either. Just not into that disgusting sight of watching someone continually drivel, or talk out of their ass. It's more entertaining watching flies on cow dung. That, at least, is a redeeming, teachable lesson.
The left and right only tolerate paparazzi when they get dirt on the right and vice versa. People who slime around in the background looking to dig up dirt, are such honorable people
Talk says:
That's really funny...have you passed on these pearls of wisdom to The Weeper of the House?
Chilled,
Is this Freudian slip what you're referring too? lol
There is absolutely no reason why the congress and the pres cannot come to an agreement to raise the retirement age incrementally over the course of the next ten years. Additionally there is no reason why they cannot reform medicare coupled with increased revenue from those receiving capital gains earnings. This is not rocket science!
To my progressive friends: At least Ryan put something on the table as flawed as it is. What are the democrats proposing. Let's cut the hyperbole and get down to specifics.
better yet let's put the budget negotiations on C-Span. Oh wait that might put the pundits like Dominico out of a job!
He should know that you can't charm the charmed. The Koch bros charms are hard to resist.
Chilled says:
You will see going forward he already gets it. He has shown some of it in the last few weeks much to the dismay of some of his colleagues. It is going to be easier for him now that he sees he has a willing adversary (for the lack of a better term).
Why would we do this? I fail to see the purpose of working until you drop dead. My parents had the pleasure of working 25 years before they retired. I get the pleasure of working 50+ years before being eligible for retirement. What's next, the pleasure of working 80 years before being eligible for retirement?
White smoke ... there is a new Pope ... name to be released anon. Could be a Yank or a Cannuk.
Why is raising the SS cap never included in the discussion...?
That's it Feisty....At least, in this instance, the Lyin Ryan told the truth!
@BCWC.......Black smoke.. White smoke..
Black smoke = Bad......White smoke = Good..........hidden racism.......I jest!
RedDevPS,
Its better than doing nothing and getting nothing.
Talk to the Hand: old talking point?
Did you see Ryan's budget? Where are the leaders in the GOP reining this nonsense in. Why waste everybody's time on something they know damn well will never ever pass.
Ryan was laughed at yesterday by all. Why do this? Why doesn't he get together with his republican and democratic members, and put something serious together instead of constantly giving us budgets that only protect the wealthy?
I'm just going to say it out loud... What is considering itself to be the important part of the repugnancy right now is mostly a giant steaming pile of racist trash. So of course when the President does what they whine for, the half-black man must be a smarmy Uncle Tom!!
The repugnicon party is an embarrassment to all REAL Americans and just a hiding place for 'Merkins.
That's what I'd like to know. Or perhaps raising the withholding tax. Or gasp, increasing the tax paid by those trillionaire corporations to help fund those pensions they no longer offer. I'm beginning to think the word retirement will soon be retired from the English language, or redefined into meaning in the coffin. Sounds rather like that other GOP phrase they love - right to work state!!
Pres. O is a Prince - Prince Charming, that is.
I don't have sound on my computer at work. Did Mark and Dom mention the fact only 13% of Americans surveyed approved of Congress, whereas President Obama's approval rating is currently at 49%?
Shouldn't Congress be turning the charm on towards the American people?
Amy - that would imply Congress HAS charm - wrong assumption! LOL!
Mark in SoCal...Great comments there...completely agree with what you had to say.
By the way...if anyone wants to know what a true "charm offensive" is, they need not look any further than my kids trying to convince me on Monday night that their bedtime should be one hour later because of the time change. THAT was a "charm offensive". ;-)
Pigotry
... turn my back for a minute and off a philandering you go.
*Yawn
Yawn.
Nway?
Feisty...Raising the SS Cap and the retirement age SHOULD be on the table; Including income from capital gains albeit at a lower rate. I understand that people who put their bodies on the line like those in the trades wear out faster and have more difficulty in their later years and need to be provided for.
@Amy -- that means that Congress approval has risen and Obama's has fallen about 6 points. What a bunch of children the first few posters are. The Republicans are correct not to trust Obama. Obama equates to the Governor in the Walking Dead as a backstabbing evil tool as he tries to lure Rick and his group into a trap. I don't trust the bastard president.
The other joke of the day on here is the notion that Obama is a leader. A leader does not miss his legal obligation to have submitted his budget plan more than 30 days ago. Obama is a joke like most of the left on here. Now I just await the PeeWee Herman imitators on here to come back with their LIV low intelligent retorts.
Ben - no one has to come back at you with much since your rantings just show the depraved mind of an uneducated fool who says nothing - but uses a lot of rhetoric to do it!
Pitiable that you are so inane in eveyrthing you post!
Here.
@Storm Trooper (aka SS) LMAO -- You just made my point. You are so ignorantly predictable. The only bigger joke than Obama is you. Your nickname must be mushroom because you live in the dark amongst a lot of sh!t.
Hey Torp, hows it going.
agreed but none of the politicians have skinn in the game...so more posturing like sands through the hour glass
yeah Ben, smoke and Mirrors from the Duke alumnus. Sigma Cum Laude LOL
Ben - again the level of intelligence I expect from you. Nothing more. You're predictable and still ignorant!
SS-Talk about predictable!! Your daily insults to people are as predictable as the sun rising in the morning.
[*Yawn]
Yeah, all that "infrastructuring" must really tire you out...your boss know you have a penchant for napping on the job?
Sure he does...
I blame it on the programming and poor script writing. I guess the programmers never thought of giving her at least Artificial Intelligence.
Argentina? Pope Cisco ... why not.
Cisco??? You mean that trusted telecommunications giant? Oh, just great. (sarcasm intended)
Glad he didn't go with Cisco (or Pope Frito Lay, or Pope Coca Cola etc.) Francis was a talking mule, I hope this Pope won't be.
As for the president doing some political schmoozing, I think it's part of the job description. Not directly effective perhaps, but a piece which needed to be advanced.
Could we now see the liberal new outlets begin to question the Obama policies? The general community believes the media to be extremely bias, losing credibility daily.
Now even MSNBC has the libbies questioning the reporting?
It does make me laugh, even MSNBC could be image concerned as is the Obama administration.
Ceasar...It goes good here in manufacturing land. In spite of the sequester and concomitant cutbacks in defense spending our inspection lab is running full bore. We may have to hire additional inspectors. Sales of precision measuring instruments (mostly made in Japan, Europe and China) are up. We don't manufacture many of those here in America now.
I am all for transparency as far as the budget is concerned with the exception of "black" or national security. Never happen and both parties are to blame. Say yes to C-Span. Say no to political punditry. These guys are no better than the strippers and Chippendale dancers currently passing themselves off as actors and actresses. "It's a business!"
Yikes! Am i starting to sound like a republican. Hopefully not!
you're starting to sound moderate...more of what we need as a nation. Glad things are going good.
yes they are
I do and i get called a liar...I've seen Fox but i dont WATCH it...About as much as I watch MSNBC and i've seen that too, i wont get accused of that...different side same coin..my pundit is better than yours...
The president seems determined to do everything possible to get Congress to work solving some real problems.
4 dead in shootings at a barber shop in Herkimer, NY and car wash in nearby Mohawk, NY.
Don't worry, though, gun owners...the gun used had to be illegally obtained because nothing bad ever happens with a legally-obtained weapon.
How ironic that JFK was shot with the same Italian rifle that he tried to have banned.
BCWC - someone watched a little Maddow last night?
Layton .. at about 3a.m.
The carnage continues while Congress does little to nothing!
Sad....really sad!
Chilled, And what does Congress have to do with the killings in Herkimer, NY? Oh, that's right according to the left wingers the Federal Government is ALL POWERFUL and can stop anything. Doesn't NY have much tougher gun laws than most states?
Last I was told by the gunners, guns don't kill people, butter knives do. How many would have died if this had been a butter knife rampage?
You got it RedDev.....Especially if that butter knife had just sliced through a stick of butter....High cholesterol added to the inevitable death/bruising from the butter knife.....
Oh, the horrors!
Well...thank goodness that NY wants to protect us from those evil Big Gulps!
...but thanks to that court decision, congratulations, Brooklyn, you're free to go back to guzzling down those 96-ounce diabetes bombs you've been craving.
Red - Typical left wing response. But just for the fun of seeing your answer I would like to ask you: Have you ever saw a gun, knife, baseball bat, etc., kill anyone or anything? If you have, I bet they was a person wielding that weapon.
Please...do you really think that by limiting the size of a cup is going to keep people from drinking the same amount as in a Big Gulp?? It's logic like yours that brought us "near-beer" back in the day. Guess what? People just drank twice the amount of near-beer as the regular stuff. It didn't stop anyone from drinking what they normally drank. Bloomberg is a loon for coming up with nanny regulations like this...not to mention, the steaming pile of dung had so many loopholes that it was un-enforceable. Try to educate yourself once in a while...
Red - Still waiting for your answer, but then you and the left wingers would have to admit it takes a person to kill and not just a weapon. But no, the Feds know best, maybe you should have the Feds appoint someone to tuck you in at night.
Funny a lot of the Baggers have said Obama wasn't playing Nice. So he plays NICE and they make childish remarks about it. These Kids need a BIGGER spanking in 2014. We need to furlough the whole bunch
I really don't care if the President is out trying to charm anyone, the charm offense shows a lack of leadership. I want something accomplished, and that can be accomplished without "ass kissing" or charming dialogue. Put some facts and ideas out there for the people to see. Where is the President's Budget Request? First time in 92 years that Congress (at least half of it) has released their budget first.
commodus is dumb
careful, he might unleash his Cacafuego
"Richie Rich Ryan" meant what he said America. He and his "Teabegger Buddies" have been on a 'mission' to destroy health care for all Americans. At the GOP/Teabegger "Caucus Conspiracy" they took a 'blood oath' to do jsut that. There is no mention of Job Creation of any type proposed in the little "Richie Rich Ryan" so-called budget plan. Again! On January 20, 2009 the Teabeggers 'conspired' to destroy the US Economy, and to make the American People pay a high economic price for voting for this President. "Richie Rich Ryan" has no intention of ever letting his 'makers' pay their share. His so-called budget does not add up. Again! In 2011 the GOP/Teabegger "Hoodlum's On The Hill" voted to destroy/dimantle Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. What the Teabeggers are doing now is not shocking at all. They had this all planned and coordinated a long time ago. That is fact!
I started reading the comments and it started off with good stuff, then melted into seeking and fiesty calling everyone stupid then fawning over each other looking for mutual approval. Go back and read it, it gets pretty funny after a while. But back on topic, here is a worn out meme "Bush Wars". How old is that incorrect phrase? Congress declared that war. I am right, but seeking and fiesty should lose their minds about me speaking that truth.
...yep...its amusing to get on here and see the usual suspects doing their routine "circle jerk"
What's more surprising is the Boozy RH being sober enough to write complete sentences. Then again, the content of those posts are pretty incoherent and repetitive.
He can't walk on water, he can't stop the rain & he sure can't stop spending tax money.
