The Hill: President Obama wants to complete a grand bargain to reduce the deficit by the end of July, an aggressive timeline coinciding with the expiration of the nation’s debt limit. Obama told a small group of Republican senators who had dinner with him Wednesday evening that a deficit-reduction deal needs to happen in the next four to five months, according to three sources familiar with the meeting.”
Taking a look at some of Obama's declining poll numbers, Charlie Cook concludes that the sequester battle hurt all sides. “[T]he widespread assumption that sequestration will produce no winners, only losers, will probably turn out to be accurate.”
“President Barack Obama is playing down expectations for a Mideast peace breakthrough during his upcoming trip to Israel, telling American Jewish leaders that he won’t be carrying a “grand peace plan” when he arrives in the region later this month,” the AP reports. “Obama, in an hourlong private meeting at the White House on Thursday, acknowledged that near-term prospects for peace are bleak, according to a person who attended the discussion. But the president said a deal with the Palestinians remains the only way for Israel to achieve long-term security. Israel’s political climate makes the prospects for jumpstarting peace talks all the more unlikely during Obama’s trip. Elections in January weakened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who since then has struggled to form a coalition government.”
Bill Clinton, who signed the Defense of Marriage Act, now says it’s time to overturn it.
“President Obama is sending a lawmaker whose relationship with Hugo Chavez has come under scrutiny in the past to represent the United States at the Venezuelan strongman's funeral on Friday,” The Hill writes. “Rep. Greg Meeks (D-N.Y.) allegedly met with Chavez in 2006 at the bequest of one of his donors, indicted Ponzi schemer Allen Stanford, to request a criminal probe into a Venezuelan banker who had fallen out with Stanford, The Miami Herald reported in 2009. The banker, Gonzalo Tirado, was charged with tax evasion and theft a year after the meeting with Meeks. Meeks said at the time that the trip was aimed at thanking Chavez for providing heating oil for poor Americans through Citgo, a subsidiary of the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela.”

And that includes the press, which dropped the ball on reporting the substance of the debate. They made the politicians look like fools, and themselves as well. Most Americans don't realize the sequester cuts will hurt research into cures for diseases because the press failed to report that story, focusing, instead, on Duncans's "pink slip" gaffe. Yeah no actual pink slips, just cuts to education and research coming to a university or school near you soon. The msm also failed to report the nature of the tax loopholes the President wants to close, or the rising tide of income inequality in this country, the Republicans are supporting. I think we have one of the worst media cultures in our history.
.The press only wants to "create" headlines.
Unfortunately the main stream media has become more like tabloid media. Why this is so is because it sells. For some reason Americans are wanting more juicy gossip and sensationalism than simple down-to-earth what's happening and why. We're already seeing the media caught up in the 2016 presidential race when we barely finished the 2012 election. I suppose there is the sense of competition. Ya gotta be the first to blab the latest gossip to the masses. Journalism hasn't always been pure and clean in America but there have been certain sourses one could go to for the truth. Some slanted one way, while others slanted the other andd by getting info from both one gets a good idea of the actual truth. Not today. Unfortunately all of them seem more like tabloids than real news outlets. Edward R Morrow, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, and Walter Cronkite are rolling in their graves over how badly news is reported these days.
There was a day when media was owned by many people. Today it seems only a few people control today's media outlets. Several newspapers all owned by one entity, TV and radio stations owned by a single entity and even the Internet news is limited to what they want us to see whether they report all or some of a story and whether what they report is factual or not. This has to change if we really want to get the truth from our media and not sensationalism or gossip.
"President Obama wants to complete a grand bargain to reduce the deficit by the end of July"
Given Obama's penchant for asking the Republicans to provide a 'plan' to cut entitlements, and then demonizing them for political points, I doubt that the Republicans will fall for that again. And there is no way that Obama will actually propose detailed 'entitlement reform' - his own Party would skewer him.
I suspect it will be 'more of the same' - all talk and no substance, and then more of the 'blame game'.
By the way - Since Obama will have no authority to commit any future President or future Congress to any spending cuts, any spending changes that extend beyond 2016 are just 'smoke and mirrors'. EVERY new Congress and President gets to negotiate their OWN spending levels when the time comes - its all part of the annual Budget process.
What President Obama has to do is stop sending money to terrorist Islamic Brotherhood and Syrian AQaeda rebels. Until they have democratic regimes that comply with human rights toward woman and give the same rights to citizens that profess any other religion that is not Islam..
Obama lost Armageddon , his numbers went down and got Pinocchio's in Washington Post. Duncan gaffe was not a gaffe was a lie, he play little chicken because that was the order.
Really
Household wealth amounted to $66.1 trillion at the end of 2012, the Federal Reserve said Thursday. That was $1.2 trillion more than three months earlier and 98 percent of the pre-recession peak
Directly in the shadow of the glittering skyline of Philadelphia, Camden has long suffered the indignities that poverty breeds. A drive through the streets of the 9-square mile city reveals a moonscape of crumbling infrastructure and abandoned homes, nearly 4,000 in all.
How is closing the gap?
closing the gap by getting everyone covered with health insurance, which Obama supports and the Republicans oppose, would help the middle class for one thing. Unpaid medical bills are a leading cause of personal bankruptcy.
Then there is support for helping students achieve college degrees, which Romney said was not the role of government, but which President Obama supports. Higher education is certainly a pathway to making more money, although you can't prove it by my experience.
Yeah, let's risk losing 750,000 jobs, it's only the middle class that will suffer, the Wall Street types are immune to cuts in Defense, education and medical research. They have private jets anyway, and won't be affected by long lines at the airport. The sequester will save the 1% money, and that is what it's all about in America now, isn't it?
President Obama’s health care law will push 7 million people out of their job-based insurance coverage — nearly twice the previous estimate, according to the latest estimates from the Congressional Budget Office released
Closing the gap printing artificial money diluting our currency, so each day the poor get less for the money, rich people don't get hurt , they don't even see the bill.
College tuition ski rocket, every student owes over 100 thousand of dollars at the end of their carrier, while all those liberal professors never miss a pay raise.
"Liberal college professors" like the "liberal media" are a figment of the Right's imagination.
My Republican Dad told me to get as much education as possible because "no one can ever take that experience away from you." He'd be shocked at the anti-education bias of the no-nothing party the Republicans have turned into. But then, he became an executive after going to college on the GI bill after being raised by stone broke parents during the Great Depression, so what did he know about the value of education?
If most kid of Republican dad's follow their parent track, our country could be different. Liberals change individual responsibility for "Government has to take care of me". You have a great father you shuld follow his ideology.
I try to have an adult conversation, but with liberals is almost impossible. Have a good day.
[I try to have an adult conversation...]
No red, you don't, especially when you dig deep and come up with little pearls of wisdom like:
Simply put so you can understand: You bait someone into responding, Amy responded with a post based in fact, you didn't like her answer so what do you do? You throw this peice of crap against the wall, hoping it sticks:
[...but with liberals is almost impossible.]
Blindly throw around the word "liberal" in a failed attempt to denigrate. How "adult" of you.
I have to laugh. Then I have to laugh some more... it isn't easy to stop... Thanks redvirginia, but you can stop trying - you aren't much good at it.
Unfortunately Amy has no f'ing clue what the role of Government is... unbelievable.
I'm having difficulty understaning how a 2% cut in future spending not yet realized is such a big deal. It hasn't been spent yet.
Come on libbies, help me make some sense out of this.
Seeking Sanity, you may keep out of the discussion - you have no common sense, can never discussion intelligently, and only speak insults.
I felt today's discussion on Meet the Press was very dishonest because they claimed Obama had been ignoring medicare and SS costs, when fixes for this are already on his plan posted on white house .gov and has been for sometime.
