Sens. Ron Johnson, Tom Coburn, Richard Burr and Saxby Chambliss leave The Jefferson after a dinner with President Barack Obama on March 6, 2013 in Washington, DC.
Senators emerging from dinner with President Obama at The Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C, Wednesday night described the sit-down as a positive conversation focused largely on building more productive ways to solve the country's fiscal problems.
"I am more optimistic, just from a personal standpoint. It's just, you know, having been in the group of eight, it's tough sledding. It's just very tough sledding," said Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb. "These are very difficult issues but I do think there's a real fatigue in just going from crisis to crisis. But tonight was a good first step. A good step."
Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said the senators and the president discussed the upcoming fiscal fights over funding the government, writing a budget and the wrangling over the debt ceiling. Hoeven said there is "an opportunity" to use the debt ceiling fight to solve the county's long term entitlement problems.
Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., said the conversation was "wide ranging" but when asked, wouldn't say if they discussed immigration or gun control.
"We had a wide ranging discussion about fiscal and other issues. I think it was a constructive discussion," he said.
President Obama hosts several Republicans for dinner to ease sequester tensions. NBC's Tracie Potts reports.
Sen. John McCain stayed largely mum: "All I can say is we had an evening that I really appreciated very much."
Sen. Lindsey Graham, the dinner organizer, left about 20 minutes before the other attendees and the president departed the hotel.
A senior administration official later said, "The president greatly enjoyed the dinner and had a good exchange of ideas with the senators."
As for who paid for dinner, several senators said they had no idea. Initially, Hoeven said several people split the check; later, his office clarified that while Sen. Saxby Chambliss had offered to pay, the president picked up the tab.
Prior to the meeting, the Republicans who were invited gave Obama the benefit of the doubt -- even if they didn't want to elaborate.
"I'm just looking forward to having a constructive conversation," said Bob Corker, R-Tenn., before dashing into the Senate chamber and away from prying reporters.
"I'm happy to go there and listen and provide input," said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., a dinner invitee who won his Senate race with considerable Tea Party backing and isn't usually on lists of moderate senators inclined to deal-making.
As he walked out of The Jefferson, a swanky D.C. hotel that bills its main restaurant as "discreet and elegant," McCain told reporters the meeting was "just fine," and flashed a thumb-up. Moments later, senators Tom Coburn, Chambliss and Kelly Ayotte were seen exiting.
The idea for the sit-down came during a meeting Graham and McCain had with Obama at the White House last week.
"How do you say no to the president of the United States who would like to have dinner with some of your colleagues? You don't," Graham said.
Related: Obama reaches out to GOP senators as Democrats seek more revenue
"When the president asked that I put together a group, I willingly -- I was honored to try to do that. Where this goes, I don't know."
Added Graham: "It is incumbent on us to reach back. When he reaches out, we need to reach back."
At the top of the dinner's agenda was the possibility of a grand bargain combining entitlement reforms with lowering tax rates and closing loopholes that would head off the sequester and tackle some of the country's worst budget woes.
So far, negotiations between the White House and GOP leaders have led only to gridlock. Graham insisted the dinner wasn't a divide-and-conquer strategy, with the president going around Republican leaders in favor of the rank-and-file.
"I would say this is an effort by the president to talk to people who he would like to talk to who he normally doesn't talk to. I think he talks to the leadership guys a lot. This is not about replacing anybody," said Graham.
Said Sen. John Thune, a member of GOP leadership: "There have always been attempts to sort of co-opt a few people up here. But this seems to be a more general outreach.
"Instead, Republicans say it's evidence that Obama's the one taking political heat for the sequester budget cuts that went into effect last week."
I think the president sort of got on the wrong side with the sequester by going out and using the scare tactics. And I think that's kind of bit him," Thune said. "He saw a 7-point drop in his approval rating in one week, and I think a lot of it had to do with the way he handled this."
Democrats familiar with the White House's thinking said the dinner was an attempt to "bring down the temperature" between Obama and the congressional GOP.

Talk about the last supper!
Reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel. lol
Nice to see the dirty dozen needs to be coddled into doing their G-Damn J-O-B-S!
It will be interesting to see how lil' Lindsey spins this into something negative tomorrow.
Make that the "baker's dozen"as Obama needs to lead and get himself into the thick of things rather than standing (and campaigning endlessly) on the side and pointing fingers.
Layton,
Wait until their rabid base gets word they dined with a Negro! lol
OH the HORROR!
If you have to throw the race card, at least get the suit right.
Maybe they can hold this dinner in Roselle, the WHITEST Community in the Nation. Fisty you are a paid HACK
I guess not all Republican's are adverse to a free lunch handout.
Why did it take 18 months before the President started talking to Congress on sequester?
Because he has been too busy campaigning for the position of "FUHRER" ! SIEG HEIL !!
THE LAST SUPPER: GOP Senators need to do the math....
The list of Senators invited to dinner with President Obama...(18)
Lamar Alexander (TN), Kelly Ayotte (NH), Roy Blunt (MO), Richard Burr (NC), Saxby Chambliss (GA), Tom Coburn (OK), Thad Cochran (MS), Susan Collins (ME), Bob Corker (TN), Jeff Flake (AZ), Lindsey Graham (SC), Orrin Hatch (UT), Mike Johanns (NE), John McCain (AZ), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Jeff Sessions (AL), Richard Shelby (AL), and John Thune(SD).
The number of GOP Senators from this list that are up for re-election in 2014... (8)
Lamar Alexander (TN), Saxby Chambliss (GA), Tom Coburn (OK), Thad Cochran (MS), Susan Collins (ME), Lindsey Graham (SC), Mike Johanns (NE), Jeff Sessions (AL)
The number of GOP Senators that need to be defeated to kill GOP filibustering (5)
Given the view that most Americans have, that (1) the Obama economy is improving, and (2) that GOP Senators and GOP Representatives are obstructing that improvement, this may be the last supper for Alexander, Chambliss, Coburn, Collins, Graham, and Johanns, whose states could be swung to the Democrats based on GOP inaction and intransigence, and the changing electorate. Hopefully, they will choke on their chicken once they realize that the end really is near. Next up, the GOP House members.......
News or propaganda
Because after he signed the Bill, it was back in Congress's hands? You know, those guys and gals who work from 9 to 10 Monday through Tuesday.
Feisty - to date, 0 jobs created by the 2010 elected GOP. 0 jobs created by the wealthy. Bonuses pocketed - in the billions.
BCWC - as long as it is on someone else's dime, the GOP are all over it. Think no further than flies and @!$%#sandwiches. Wonder how many votes Romney earned with the freebie Welsh Cakes handed out by his wife. Another republican zero. What I find fascinating is that free Obamaphones can create a landslide victory, but free Welsh Cakes can't guarantee a single vote.
FINALLY, I have been saying Obama needs to LEAD (like Reagan and Clinton lead!) I've been saying all along that he needs to get together with Congress and dine out, picnic, watch football. It is easier to work together if you spend time together outside of work.
When did Oreo become a race? Oh, I get it, code for Black on the outside, white creamy gooey filling on the inside. Talk, I'll bet your love some of that white creamy gooey filling, don't ya.
Mr. President: I voted for you twice, where is my free meal.
Other that feeding those lazy bags, you are doing a great job, keep up the fight.

I feel sorry for the President when the lights go out. It'll make the Minneapolis airport seem tame.
Kumar - too bad you haven't been paying attention. The President invited several members of the Republican party to the White House for dinner on several occasions. They declined.
He invited most to a private screening of "Lincoln." They declined.
Do you see a pattern here?
Sorry, gremlins.
Deny.....deflect.....deceive.....distort.......and for desert: BLAME.
There, that covers Mr. Obama's "dinner" menu.
Yep, Mr. Obama....keep up the political fight and forget about the MAJOR ISSUES facing Main Street America today. Your "fear mongering" tactics is really having a NEGATIVE effect on your approval rating. It IS ALL ABOUT getting the House back in 2014....isn't it ?
Yep.....it IS
Bush's Weather's DOW's China's Lack of Funds Republicans'Obama's fault.Ido - as usual you post NOTHING. Nonsense - that must be your middle name. Aren't you even a little embarrassed to look so stupid day after day? Of course not, you don't have the intelligence to be embarrassed!
I would guess they aren't going 'dutch'.......and a la Willard, secret cameras....Nah.
Hopefully the TeaPeople will behave themselves, or the Jefferson will no longer be elegant!
Yes, It was the GOP's fault. everyday, all day...and everyday the liberal left on FR and in general repeat the same abject lies in an attempt to carry the water for King Hussein the Merciful. and Every Day Seeking Approval says the same damn things about the same posters. GOP sucks, you're a liar, you're an idiot, you're a moron. everyday...and everyday I call you the Sycophant Commie lover you are.
Will Obama take the first sip of wine.
Cesaar,
Great post! It's clear Obama saw the handwriting on the wall with his drop in approval ratings over the scare tactics of the sequester, but anything with bringing both sides together is a good thing.
Now when the President excuses himself for the Men's room we'll have our first test of this new republican drone religion they've whipped up overnight...
Where's the wait-staff? Why is the "closed" sign on? Hey! Wait a minu........

Because Obama was to busy in his reelection campaign, playing golf or vacationing, but also he promise to the American voters , sequestration won't hapen, and here we are, another unfulfilled promise of our leader and again blaming the Republicans

This is the kind of rhetoric that proves to me that you are nothing more than a partisan hack!
Boehner's bar tab has always exceeded his salary ... the nicotine boys in Winston-Salem have been picking it up for years.
I think this is Obama's last chance. If he doesn't stop demagoguing and start reaching across the aisle, we're done.
But seeing as how you libtards seem to never show up on the blogs of an NBC article that provides a conservative viewpoint (few and far between as those may be), I would like to ask a serious question.
Why do you hate Chavez so much? I mean yeah, he spoke out against America and capitalism in general... and Venezuela was one of the only countries that was not on Obama's apology tour... so from that standpoint, I get it.
BUT, Chavez and Obama also stand for the very similar principles of improving the lives of the poor, spending as much money as it takes, to make people a little better off. The only difference as I see it is that Chavez's economy is further down that road than Obama's economy.
I'm not trying to be snarky - just really interested in figuring out where you see the differences between the economic policies of Chavez and Obama.
This will amount to a $175,000 dinner paid with your taxpayer dollars. The clowns will sit around and joke about how neither side will get anything accomplished.
Ah yes, the entitled GOP crowd is up for free meal. Let's hope the President makes them eat crow.
FISTY:
Amazing tolerance and sensitity to the African Americans...... YOU AS A DIE HARD LIBERAL should know that #egro is a hateful word and only used by the KKK type people.

We are done. He won't rich across the isle and never did, not when he Senator in Illinois, neither when he was Member of Congress, nor the last four years, it is a fact, he has a new PAC to bully Republicans.
After Obama's re-election victory, Obama for America, the political action committee that fueled his campaigns, became Organizing for Action, a nonprofit charged with pushing his legislative agenda. Because the new group is a 501(c)(4) social welfare nonprofit—not a political group—it isn't required to disclose its donors or its spending. Campaign finance reformers and mainstream media outlets have criticized the change since it was announced. He will collect money from millionaire and billionaires to get access to the White House, which is actually close for regular folks.
Who'll blink first?
In fact Obama is NOT a Negro, or black. He is a mulatto. Look it up. It's not a slight or a racist thing to say. It's an accurate thing to say.
President Obama has been reaching over the aisle nonstop since first elected. Day after day, On national TV few years back when he debated all of the republicons, asking for any....solution to anything...they had nothing. They looked so pitiful against one man, they decided never to do it again. The president has to debate himself to get some kind of action going....exactly what republicons want. They pledged against America the night President Obama took office, they pledged to Norquist and the rich and are sticking to the plan.
What is reallly fuuny is how all these Teabaggers/rtwingers vote against themselves on every issue...as if they are 1% rich hiding their profits of millions and billions in offshore accounts......like Romney.
DOH!
Republicons are for the rich 1%.....and Democrats are for the middle class and poor.
Feisty,
What will coddle Obama into doing his job? Promise of yet ANOTHER vacation???
I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do. So, I leave it up to you.
Sad that all music fans lost Alvin Lee. You are definately going home. RIP
Ohhh, I don't know about that...
Rasmussen...
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 51% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Obama's job performance. Forty-eight percent (48%) disapprove...
That's -4 from Feb 4th for approve and +4 from Feb 4th for disapprove.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that just eight percent (8%) of Likely U.S. Voters think Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Sixty-seven percent (67%) rate Congress’ performance as poor.
I'd certainly be more worried as a Congressman than as President!
2014 is coming! Maybe Republican Congress critters should actually DO something, eh?
NC - what's your issue? He's still taken fewer vacations than Bush did during the same amount of time in office. Next?
I like it when President Obama comes out and speaks with the American People, which is unheard of in the Republican Party.
So are Republicans trying to "instruct" the President of the United States to "shut up" because it's hard to find anything positive to say about The Obstructionist Republican Party?
Mr. President, don't let those "liars and deniers" shut you up, and don't let them stop you from "telling it like it is"!
@ Farty
Great point. You must watch plenty of the Late Late show?
My only question is WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS EXCLUSIVE MEAL---US or THEM?
One way to save governmental bucks is to make Congress pay for their own meals and scotch!
IF such occured from this point on imagine we could save SS and MEDICARE for the majority of Americans---who are born and raised here!
Now, that Drama Queen realizes the election is over. Does the Drama Queen understand failure is due to their lack of compliance ;and that's why the GOP & TEA SUCKERS lost?

Speaker Boehner can't control his own caucus, and couldn't "lead" a horse to water, so why do Republicans expect the President to be the Republican Caucus "Leader", which includes the Teabaggers then, what, 'force" everyone to "follow" the President's "lead"?
I thought the Speaker of the House is supposed to be House "Leader", what did Republicans do, kick Boehner out and replace him with the President?
And the Vice President of the United States is the President of the U.S Senate.
Republicans have been repeating that same stupid sentence so long it doesn't make sense anymore.
Furthermore, none of the politicians in Washington are supposed to be mere "followers," they're all supposed to be "Leaders".
Especially their "leader".

@EEngineer,
Those Rasmussen polls you quote are kind of worthless. It is the effects of an all out media blitz that he is just sitting up nights worried about the country, while all the a-holes in congress can't get along. The commercials, the campaigning. I find campaigning against your co-workers absolutely ludicrous. Why do you think they say anyone with a huge campaign fund can run. People just lap that up. Put your face out there with whatever message you want enough times that eventually it becomes the reality for most.
Obama has them by the short hairs. If he extends an invitation and they refuse, they look like the dweebs that they are.
On the menu:
Pork and Crow!
Justslapme (would love to be helpful there), before it's over, you may be glad to eat crow; because there may not be a lot of resources left to eat if this foodstamp president continues spending. Of course, if you are already on foodstamps, you don't care anyway. I think that is why a great many don't care about the economy or jobs - because they live off the back of those who are hard-working.
I keep seeing the term "Rich white"............... that certainly does seem to set a great number of you off on your brooms.
The name of the game is "blame" as so many here like to say . . . its the GOP's fault, until the finger is pointed the other way, with proof the GOP has been trying . . . and its the LIBS that are refusing to compromise.
So the President offers a free lunch of spaghetti and meatballs where the group can slurp up some good food and don't worry about getting a little dirty as the main meal is rather messy . . . that is until the President gets his order carried over to his table under a silver platter . . . eyes bug as he gets prime rib . . . . . . everything looked like it might work out until then.
Not ONE of you liberals on here can answer why you hate Chavez so much?
As I said, I recognize that he spoke out against America and capitalism in general... and Venezuela was one of the only countries that was not on Obama's apology tour... so from that standpoint, I get it.

Starsailing, You're so right these Congressman should be executed for being traitors, how can they pledge to a private Organization while sitting in our Government, they are biased in every decision they make, and the Idiots that elected them are just sheep, most are not even RICH they just think they are, they think We don't know most of them are on FOODSTAMPS.
Barack Obama - attempting to become a man - stepping aside from all the blame and name calling he's been leading and doing - perhaps - that have left the country divided and economy stagnant

@American girl,
I agree and disagree. Congressman as leaders, not so much. I call them what they call themselves, representatives. They are representing a particular district. Actually a bad system because they are all conditioned to vote first on party, second on constituency (first two very interchangable), third on country. When you have heavy seniority, and maybe chair or sit on a committee or two, that's when it gets a little jacked up. I think where the president should lead is coming with a message and style very appropriate to the situation. He has to remember that he is dealing with a room full of egomaniacs, and that goes across party lines. That is the primary reason they all took the job, and that includes the president. He cannot think he is going to use directive leadership and they will all march lock step. That is kind of arrogant or naive if he were to think that. In an egomaniacs mind, concession = weak = failure. What they don't realize is the cooperation and selfless service takes more maturity and character than any of them have or can fathom, and they could walk out as a hero (if their constituents also had the same qualities, otherwise their stays in Washington will be short.) That balance I bet is near impossible, but I don't think I can name one who has even tried.

Beverly - The GOP did not lose because of their lack of compliance. The GOP lost because they cave into democrats demands too often. Likening democrats to little insubordinate children who cry and whine all day because they want more cookies the republicans give in to them like bad parents. The sniveling democrats know this and snivel even more. Now the democrats want republicans gone from any sort of majority. They will probably get their way... and will overtake them in the house and create a filibuster Senate in 2014.
America did NOT learn any lessons between 2008 and 2010. To hand over this country to democrats will spell out the same fiscal irresponsibility they created then. Obama will have entered office with democrat majorities in both chambers and more than likely will spend his last 2 years with democrat majorities.
I realize this will create joy and jubilation coming from the liberals... you will throw parties, dance in the streets and have one hell of a time... while the word hell won't be far from reality.
Since we are heading for economic disaster anyway... it would be wonderful to have the economy collapse during the reign of the democrat party. I don't think America will EVER forget for future generations... except I know if the economy does collapse, we will surely turn socialist... but that's OK, you liberals are hoping for this anyway... so you will finally get your wish... your lifelong ambition of having all people equal except for the upper political party who will tower above you will come true. Your lot in life will not change... you will still be the lower class and all your support of socialism will prove to be what? Nothing. Well maybe nothing... they will have the power to selectively murder millions of people in the name of the party... anyone not siding with them will be eliminated... Don't think this can happen? Study your history.
@American Girl: Had I asked why Bush hates Chavez, yours would have been a responsive (though inaccurate) answer.
My question, however, is why do the liberals hate Chavez, when his policies were only slightly (if at all) left of progessivism?
Or is your answer that most liberals were proponents of Chavez?
It didn't. That is just another right wing lie. He has been talking to them all along.

From what I've been hearing, it's been House Republicans who have been screaming that they need a leader. I don't think that's up to the President, and certainly the President hasn't done it, but I do think it's the House Republican Leader that supposed to actually "lead" the Teabaggers.
So, who's going to pay for the meal? I mean, with sequestration, things are so dire that they're cutting TriCare healthcare benefits for our soldiers....the lousy SOBs!
American Girl, you're partially right.
Bush was "instructed" most likely to hate Chavez by Dick Cheney as Halliburton has been a company that has numerous times had its equipment and companies' assets appropriated in Venezuela. FWIW Chavez was by no means the first Venezuelan leader to do so. This had been done in the 70's also. And at one other time. In both occasions Halliburton as owner of Brown & Root and Dunbar & Sullivan who were both substantial contractors in the oilfield lost everything. Halliburton also lost control of their Maracaibo based insurance subsidiaries of Adams & Porter and Highlands Insurance Company.
FWIW Venezuela was always a country with an enormous divide between the wealthy and the poor. There really was no middle class to speak of. When I first visited there in the late 70's I was totally taken aback by the sheer number of people living on the hillsides in shipping containers stolen from the port of Caracas. Meanwhile those connected with the oil industry lived in enormous wealth.
I don't necessarily agree with how Chavez accomplished some of his goals of providing education and health care to more of the poor, but one cannot deny that there are a bunch of people far better off there these days than there were prior to him coming in power.
This is absolutely amazing. An effective president does these get togethers, mostly behind closed doors, to work things out and they rarely get publicized. You only see the results. But this character meets with the opposition once every four years and it becomes a media frenzy and nothing gets done. What a failed leader this is. Bill and Hillary must be laughing their ass off.

Hum, because they begged him, because they thought they could force the President to take them for dinner and a sleep-over up at Camp David.
The GOP thought that after they announced on TV last Sunday that the President ought to have all the Republicans up at Camp David for a pow wow, that the President would invite them to the Presidential Retreat.
The President chose to have the "meet" on Capital Hill instead, on the GOP's home turf so when the GOP gets to stomping their feet and poking out their bottom lip, they won't have too far to go home.
Looks the like Obama trying to save face. First Obama blames the republicans for Sequester. Hitting the campaign trail with the normal scare tactics, kids, seniors, longer lines for the TSA. Then back pedaled and said it will not be that bad.
Maybe now there can be some headway gained to address the out of control spending. Maybe Obama getting personally involved may actually accomplish something. (not holding my breath though).

I would have expected that from crybaby Boehner, but I guess it rubbed off on McConnell too (crybaby).
Job1 -
To address your first comment - Obama stopped it? When has it stopped? The unreported unemployment in this country is close to 20%... how did he help employment. 1 in 5 Americans are looking for work, or have given up looking for work.
I suppose you consider $17 trillion in national debt healthy for the economy... and deficits totaling a trillion dollars a year healthy. All the while, Obama wants to spend more money. Stopped? Where?
Do you know why the stock market is soaring? It's because the feds are dumping money into it... It will crash because that is unsustainable. When it comes down, it will come down big time. Will you listen then?
GDP is at 1%... Healthy or not?
The press lies to America - healthy or not?
Obama did what? What has he actually done other than campaign against things? What governing has he actually performed? How is he leading us to economic freedom and when has he ever supported capitalism?
Do you know how many individual states are on the brink of bankruptcy?
Things are not rosy... things are terrible... and I squarely blame the leader of this country for adopting a liberal/progressive stance on his way of allegedly leading this country. We are going backwards and liberals seem to love it. They never want to pass blame to anyone except republicans. 2/3'rds of this government is led by democrats but yet it's ALL republicans fault for the troubles we have. Do you realize how insane that sounds? The political rhetoric is sickening coming from the left.
Obama has NOT helped anyone... except lining the pockets of Solyndria and about a dozen other of his failed companies that have all gone the way of the dodo.
Fiesty, american girl and job1...
The epitomy of three people who just love to create gridlock...
Fiesty... Negroe? How passe' and not even PC. I imagine that with your sarcastic rhetoric you really enjoyed putting your grade school classmates down. Wouldn't surprise me either if more than just a few of them were left emotionally handicapped. Perhaps even to the point of finally boiling over to commit murder and mayhem. Perhaps ted bundy or gacy were once repeatably put down by you. Must make you feel so proud.
Job1... The POTUS has been talking sequestyer all along?... Try again sweety or are you only referring to last weeks fear mongering? I found it very informative on how obama changed his tune on how disasterous sequestration would be to "it won't be that bad" (paraphrased) after he signed it into law last week.
American girl... So you don't like the GOP? Sucks to be you doesn't it? You are just another die hard, stick in the mud, living in the past, opinionated little old lady. I have democrat neighbors to the south, north and east of my house and I am sure that the apartment complex behaind me has more than just a couple. With the exception of those in the apartment complex, I have broken bread or shared a beer or two with all of them on multiple occasions. Regardless of their politics, I have never regretted talking to them.
American Girl -
American Girl are you obtuse, or are you still trying to get through reading for dummies? Your nonresponse is indicative of a reading comprehension problem... or a simple lack of understanding of the history of republican cave ins? Maybe it's just that you like to spout off any ole thing that comes to your brain Tee hee hee!
Really now... explain this one to me... Why would republicans want to cut back our spending if they want to collapse the entire United States Economy? Are you under the belief $17 trillion in national debt isn't enough? Are you under the belief that a trillion dollars a year in deficits aren't enough? Do you even have an inkling of what the word economy means? You try spending a thousand dollars a week more than you earn... see how long you can do it before you go belly up.
Odumbo actually EMAILED A MEMO with instructions to make the sequester as painful as possible on the American people!

GRUMPY old men have been churlish and whining because they were HUNGRY?
Good grief....
No dessert until you've accomplished something.
Its people with the likes of Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan is why we have a problem in this Country !!!
How is it that fat pork rind eating BBBt FeistyRedhed is always the first to post, could it be she works for the white house.
So you're saying it's wrong for whites to have a meal with a "negro"? What a racist piece of @!$%#.
Fisting Redhead...what a bigot, I bet you use that "negro" term alot in Roselle, looks like you slipped and used it here, which if it was anyone else, you would go on a tirade on how Racist they are. Where is Seekiong Insanity, Beverly and the other libtards who should be condemming you??? By the way, check the dictionary..he is actually a mulatto (half black, half white).
You cannot trust Graham!
who's paying for these?????
did they agreed whether it's paper or plastic??
isn't the meeting illegal???
I'm glad ya 'll here at this dinner ..hope ya'll like liver!
Buget cuts.
Good gwad! The President of the United States and various Senators are getting together over dinner to discuss ways and means to overcome some differences, that if attained, will help the people of the country. I see nothing unusual about this. Fact, It's Statesmanship. If It doesn't resolve the differences, maybe It'll diminish 'em some for the next meeting.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH YES!!!!!
As the elitists dine in elegance the American people struggle to survive and see a rudderless government.
YO BARRACK, WHERE IS OUR CONSTITUTIONALLY MANDATED BUDGET??????
Where is the "focus like a laser" on the economy?
Where are the jobs?
Where is the deficit cut in half?
Where is the solution to the sequester?
Where is the solution to the continuing resolution?
Wake up America, this is the most blatant example of "Bread and Circuses" you will ever see.
This is no more than a dog-and-pony show to give the appearance of something being done. The elitists will dine on fine cuisine and imported wines and tell us "this is what DEMOCRACY looks like". Of course even our elected civil servants need to be reminded that we are a Federal Constitutional Republic, and they have specific mandated responsibilities to protect every American's ability to pursue Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
This spectacle should be on the floor of Congress with all 535 members present over peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with water and should be broadcast on C-Span. If you insist we are a DEMOCRACY then have the meeting the way it should be held under a Democracy.
We The People have a Right to know what you are doing as it impacts us much more than it does you. Time to slap on some old work jeans and get dirty. Our nation is crumbling and you are all responsible.
Instead of discreet and elegant how about responsible and transparent.

LOL..... OK, you're correct, so tell me why do people like you constantly harp on calling him the Kenyan, and not the Kansan?
Approval ratings dropping 7% in a week. This president will do the unthinkable to win back the support even if it comes down to inviting John Boehner & Mitch McConnell at the last minute.
You can rest assured that the Obama agenda hasn't changed, only the necessary objective ways to obtain it.
Hope ALL the GOP attendee's won't be blindsided by this attempt to continue spending and once again raise taxes on the wealthy.
When will the Democrats ever understand that there is a difference between a Deficit reduction PLAN, and a speech?
Obama touts his so-called 'plans' for Deficit reduction, but they never contain any specific spending cuts - only specific TAX INCREASES and generalizations about spending cuts.
As the CBO has said in the past about Obama's so-called 'plans "We cannot 'score' a speech".
The Republicans need to insist on a 'plan' from Obama that can be 'scored' by the CBO - by its yearly impact. And anything that adds to spending NOW in return for 'cuts' that might happen after Obama leaves office is 'smoke and mirrors' because Obama cannot bind any future President or Congress.
Is the sequester a lack of money?? Yet Obama can bring out the food for his guest but you or I can not visit the white house on tour because of budget cuts. I wonder how much of his staff was cut??? Oops he needs them to do this kind of crap. Spend spend spend, and not trim. YEP he is your man.

Starsailor,re#1.40, The President never reached across the aisle in his 1st term in office. Particularly in the first two years with a Democrat controlled Congress. It was his way or the highway. Obama didn't give a damn about the Economy,he just concentrated on his Socialistic agenda. Gov't control of corporations,Healthcare,3yrs of unemployment benefits because Obama connot jumpstart the economy, yada, yada. Which may be OK with you but proved fatal to the Democrat's control of Congress come the mid term elections.look for your messiah to flog the dream act to death next year in a pathetic pandering of Latino votes to further sell out America to gain Democratic Congressional control. Then Pelosi as "Ava Braun", will do whatever Obama says, after all shes made millions under the current administration.
President Obama shouldn't have invited John McCain, because McCain is the one who dredged up that awful Sarah Palin woman.
No, Johnny, we'll never forgive you for that!
I'm not surprised, they have the same goal...cutting Social Security, Medicare, etc. and transferring more wealth from the middle class and poor to the rich.

The President picked up the tab? That is a laugh. The American tax payers picked up the tab. That is one of the problem with Congress, White House, media, and certain members of senior leadership in the Executive Branch; they think that OUR tax dollars are THEIR money.
Boy !! FishytheRedHead is a fast reader. The Article was put up by First Read at 1:44 p.m., she noticed it, read it and posted her comment by 1:46 p.m. (Two minutes). Wonder who she works for? Is she possibly a propaganda "specialist" for NBC?
My favorite part is that Mitch McConnell tried to take credit for this whole meeting.
Barack Obama - Acting All Adult like - for a change
An Act? - Most likely - but at least an effort on his part finally - Billy C probably gave him a "talking to"
Going from the constant attack and blame - to talking like an adult - Obama showing slight signs of growing up a bit
The Markets - seem to love the sequester's cuts in government spending!
Dow - All time high since Friday's sequester kicking in
BMetter - Don't forget - it was Barack who tried to put Van Jones the Communist ties activist on his staff - thankfully - he was revealed
And Bill Clinton - who put Monica Lewinsky - in our vocabulary and lives
We can't forgive them for that either - we could have done without both
@ Bob-1136191 who wrote:
You hit the nail on the head. Amazing, all you libs can bull@!$%# about a friggin dinner that really doesn't matter, but you don't have the balls to debate about drones.
My thoughts exactly... Hopefully this is the start of a new governing style. If it is, I hope the GOP also starts trying harder to work with their Democratic counterparts.
AlexM,
I have to disagree with the comment on the dinner. If it is the start of a real attempt to build relationships between the parties then it could be very significant. The 2 parties have very different world views and therefore, significantly different views on how to solve our nations problems. In that type of situation, the best thing you can do is try and build personal relationships first so people can at least start the negotiations with a feeling of trust. It's basically "difficult negotiations 101". Clinton and Reagan both did this, and hopefully Obama will now follow their example.
As to debating drones, I think your comments illustrate why it's important to build personal relationships before having these types of negotiations. The use of drones is a very emotional issue and finding a solution will require both sides having some faith that they understand the other side before making a decision. Continuing to yell at each other across the party aisles is not an effective way to govern.
Now that the insignificant 8 have had their free meal, maybe now they will get something done and start working for the people.
The funny thing is that all you Liberals paid for that dinner. Second, to the people thinking that only Republicans are not trying to push forward the budget. Do you realize that both the Democrats and Repupublicans submit budgets. So now you should realize that the Democrats are just as much to blame as the Republicans. The only problem is you do not want to see that because you have your precious black man as a president. Even if it means the US is not as good as it was before he came into office. PS truth hurts sometimes.
Fiesty Redhead Rossele, IL McCain said thank you for helping to pay for his steak he ate at the dinner.
Deven,
Obama is black? I never noticed. I just looked at him as a human being.
Looks like Obama is finally getting serious. The dinner guests are truly serious about getting the deficit and debt down. Wonder if pull another political stunt and try and screw with them?
Sorry, I'm not sure how this "leading" is going to change anything. Are the Republicans going to give revenue? Is the President now supposed to roll over and give the Republicans spending cuts without any revenue? It certainly hasn't kept Republicans from pointing fingers and crying about a "debt crisis" and apocalypse.
As for 2014, do you think Obama is dumb enough to think, with gerrymandering (both parties use it) and 2 years away, that the Democrats are likely to take the House, and, that he'll wait till 2014 to propose moving forward on any legislation? Not likely.
Obama got $1.65 Trillion of tax increases this year ($1 Trillion for Obamacare and $650 Billion from the 'rich'), so the sequester was ALWAYS about SPENDING CUTS alone.
So what does Obama want now? 'A 'Balanced Approach', meaning "I want more tax increases so I don't have to make the spending cuts".
The Republicans are not biting, and are saying "You got your tax increases, now give us the spending cuts".
It appears that the Republicans have won this round, since the cuts will come whether Obama likes them or not.
Ironically, it was Obama that proposed the sequester cuts in the first place, and now he's caught in the web of his own making.
By the way - any claims of 'future cuts in spending' that are supposed to occur AFTER Obama leaves office are just 'smoke and mirrors' - No President can bind a future President or Congress to ANY spending cuts - they get to negotiate their OWN Budgets when they take office.
Roy writes,
We all know the debt ceiling, the budget, the CR, and the sequester has always been about tax revenues and spending cuts. Separating them apart isn't going to change anything.
Obamacare was signed into law in 2010, not 2013.
But then you say Obama proposed the sequester cuts. Please make up your mind.
Yes, Presidents can't take credit for cutting spending after they leave office. That's why President Bush set his tax cuts to expire after he left office.
Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL
The A typical closet Lib bigot. You can never go too long without interjecting race; ever. Wonder why you and other Libs always have a persons skin color on your minds?
StoptheCannibals-2908428 "Roy, We all know the debt ceiling, the budget, the CR, and the sequester has always been about tax revenues and spending cuts. Separating them apart isn't going to change anything...........Obamacare was signed into law in 2010, not 2013."
I think the subject was the 'sequester cuts', and that has always been about the $1.2 Trillion in CUTS - there were no tax increases attached to that issue.
The Obamacare tax increase and the tax increase on the 'rich' took effect this year, so my statement that 'Obama got $1.65 Trillion of tax increases this year' is accurate since its effective beginning date was the first of this year.
Fiesty Red Head
You seem to always and somehow bring in the race card. This is a direct reflection on NBC with whom you are affiliated and should not be tolerated. Your contributions to most discussions have no value which are slanderous, offensive and filled with hate for all who oppose this administration.
Roy,
Closing loopholes for millionaires will be a topic of discussion until they are closed. Perhaps you are fine with having the middle class shoulder all the responsibility for debt reduction, but Democrats think everyone should sacrifice in this effort. For some reason, you think the richest 2% of Americans shouldn't contribute at all (or as little as possible) towards debt reduction. Protecting the rich (and hurting the middle class and poor) is your biggest concern for some reason.
Spending cuts have been made to date of $2.5 Trillion towards debt reduction according to the non-partisan CBO, but only $600 Billion in tax revenues. That is over $4 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases to pay down the debt.
We also need to discuss taking away the cap on taxable wages for Social Security tax, means testing entitlements, and stopping the rich from taking everything we have. That will likely take years of debate.
StoptheCannibals,
Really? That's not it at all. It's the easy answer for the intellectual lazy but it's not the right one. The tax cuts had to have a sunset clause to get around the Byrd rule.
Alright. Ring up more charges on the AmericanTaxpayer credit card. Iwould like to see the receipt for that dinner. The most expensive hotel in DC and then rent it out for an exclusive outing and have dozens of SS guys standing around picking their noses and scratching their arses while a dozen politicians stuff their faces.
What does that say about the WH chefs? "we're tired of the swill served there"?
Did Barry reach in HIS POCKET and pay for this meal? I think not.... the TAXPAYER picked-up the tab REGARDLESS.
Barry is like the little kid that buys his friends ice cream out of Daddy's pocket.....
Seeking Unsanity.....
Well, thanks again for reading my posts. You are such a good Progressive with your counter remarks.
The tab was actually picked up using the White House credit card and charged to the White House's budget. That put a small crimp into those Wednesday get togethers for friends, campaign contributors, and special interest groups.
Now if Mr. Obama would pay for his family's African trip which his children were "designated" as "Senior White House Staff" to avoid the cost of the vacation.

As far as Obama going to dinner with some GOP folk, great.....nothing will be accomplished because of his photo op dinner.
@American girl. you really think voting "party first" is inherently a republican trait? I guess the libtards really are a bunch of sheep. When your democratic pal is chair of a committee, and you wanted to buck a vote, bit instead you go with your dem counterpart because he either pressures you, or he now owes you a favor I imagine depending on stature in congress. That is voting party first.

What a joke !!! What the headline should have read was; Taxpayers pick up the bill for more political BS. I'm sure if anything actually came out of Obama's pocket it will be added on to the tab for the next multi-million dollar vacation. When are all you liberal hacks going to realize that both sides are to blame for doing nothing, but padding their pockets ?
I'm holding my breath.
Like yesterday, today no new jobs are reported.
Try ... "On the data front, Automatic Data Processing Inc. ADP -0.84% on Wednesday said the economy added 198,000 private-sector jobs, topping forecasts for a gain of 175,000. The strong employment data boosted the dollar ahead of Friday's key U.S. monthly nonfarm payrolls report."

I would suggest you NOT hold your breath ... remember, there is a vast distance betwen what Obama says and what Obama does ! Obama came out looking like a complete clown with his dommsday's record and now he wants to "MAKE NICE" with Republicans .... because his poll numbers are dropping yet again ! GASP !!
Aw shucks BCWC. I was hoping to watch Scott turn blue. Even had his

AndresTM - I can only guess. You're trying to communicate with jimlotsanumbers, right? Don't bother - he won't understand! LOL

Yeah right, the teatard is looking forward to that Chicken Fried steak and corn on the side and moonshine to wash it all down....
The amateur from Illinois finally shows some leadership. It's tough to negotiate with strangers. This President is clueless. Hasn't he ever heard the old adage "keep your friends close but your enemies closer". Woodward's book talks all about this President "not getting it". Because he doesn't, he is an academic, not a leader, and he has been since day one, a man over his head.
Typical idiocy. My friend, my Congressman has a 85% approval rating where it counts, his district. The con job by the media is unrelenting to the sheep like you that follow it. It doesn't matter a hill of beans that Congress has a 26% approval rating, that doesn't mean a damn thing. What matters is how he or she polls within there district, and by the way most people like there Congressperson, they just hate everyone elses. sell stupid elsewhere, we're full up on here already. And if you think the Republicans will lose the House in 2014, I got some land west of Miami for sale. With redistricting after the census only about 20 seats are in competitive districts in this whole country, and with 30 Republican Governors in place that ain't changing anytime soon pal. The Republican House is here for a long long time, get used to it.
JCB - lies. That's all you post is LIES. Read post #1.79 if you care about the truth - which you clearly have no use for!
The stock market surge is DESPITE obama not because of him.
Thinker,
Correct sir. I moved my money to gold a few years ago. Even with the recent downturn in gold, I'm still up several hundred thousand. And I will triple my money when the stock market starts crashing very soon. The stock market is being propped up my obama's boy toy Bernacke and his printing presses.
I converted most of my wealth to toilet paper. Easy to barter with after the collapse. I am sure most of the folks who will want to barter with me are unprepared lefties. They are so full of sh!t

Wow, is Obama finally realizing he's not actually an Emperor, King or Dictator. The House slaps him back in place with the God awful, end of the world sequester and the stock market soars. Maybe our lazy, narcissistic President is realizing it's time to act like a President and speak to both sides and not just remain a petulant little child when he doesn't get his way; then hits the campaign trail and the David Liberal Letterman show and the View to do more bashing. It's taking him too long to learn this lesson, but it's a start.

Hey Pubes,
Obama is the President of the USA for the next 46 months, get used to it. If you are going to biatch and complain for the rest of his term, you must have an awfully poor life.
From Politico.com
Boehner has been by the White House for most holiday parties -- and he played that legendary round of golf with POTUS a couple of years back -- but he declined Obama's invitation to screen "Lincoln." So did McConnell, along with Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine).
House Republicans have routinely turned down White House invites (as Democrats did under Obama's predecessor), with the high point of bipartisan schmoozing being a sparsely attended 2011 BBQ Obama threw for newly-elected Republicans after the 2010 midterms.
One Republican freshman who didn't go was North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers whose flack said, with admirable candor, "She declined because she chose not to go."
Boehner, for his part, also declined Obama's invites for no fewer than six state dinners, after attending at least one thrown by former President George W. Bush, according to news reports. Boehner's excuse for most of them: He was back in his Cincinnati-area district.
A state dinner isn't a discussion, it's pageantry kook. Democrats talk all the time about bi-partisanship except when the other party is in power.
So Lady, I read your post, and your the liar. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE FACT THAT THIS PRESIDENT NEVER EVEN CALLED OR TALKED TO THE SENATE MINORITY LEADER IN HIS FIRST 18 MONTHS IN OFFICE THAT IS FACT! That was reported not only in the NY Times, but also in Woodward's book. Real leaders IMMEDIATELY reach out to their foes, not hide behind a desk. And who the hell wants to see a damn movie with the same guy that lectures to you, then lies about it. . oh watching Linclon sure will brings us some jobs, boy of boy. I remember this same guy you so love, this President, said he end the Afghanistan War immediately, yet 52 months later there are more troops in that country than when he took office. Liars are everywhere in DC, but the biggest one lives on Pennsylvania Avenue lady.
The truth is you can't handle the truth, this amateur is OVER HIS HEAD!
Have they agreed on the shape of the table?
If I were the Republicans, I would hire a "food taster" just to be safe .... trusting Obama is dangerous !
I don't know...I was thinking he could have cut down the amount of the check by just inviting Grover Norquist; they all take their orders from him.
Why not have Norquist and George Soros have the dinner since each of them feel they control their parties?
Its the size of the throne and its altitude over the dinner table that is being debated. Having seen Obama cheap theatrics in action, expect rancid horsemeat for the entree due to those laid off food inspectors.
Let em eat cake!
I'm not clear regarding those invited to the table, however, Graham and Corker both have home states that are heavily invested in Medical research - and that is one area that benefits absolutely no one if it is cut. Close to a cancer cure? Close to a diabetes cure? Close to an aids cure? Well, you can kiss all that good buy and hope you are wealthy enough to go to Switzerland for expensive medicines if they don't get this straightened out. Corker will face a lot of heat from UT, Vanderbilt, MeHarry, and St. Jude if all that research money dries up. Besides helping people, it also employes a lot of people. Talking about jobs, there would be lots of jobs if the wealthy had used their tax breaks to create jobs instead of hoarding the money. Make no mistake about this folks, the wealthy absolutely love a bad economy - they still make lots of money and get to regulate the slave labor (working class). I have paid on my mortgage with no deductions for almost 10 years (be paid off next year because I don't believe in personal debt), but if I can't claim deductions/loopholes then no one else should. Want to keep the loopholes? fine, make them available to everyone, not just the weatlhy. Nope, no class warfare, just think it is time to be fair across the board. Either make loopholes available to every taxpayer or take them completely away.
Means test, means test, means test them all!
Baby,
Your post made no sense Skippy. I own a company. I pay the highest tax rates in the nation. I cannot / don't want to hire high-priced tax accountants / lawyers. Those loopholes are available to me already but I have no idea how to use them without hiring a financial staff. I like to keep my company "lean and mean" and don't want a bunch of MBA's f_cking up my technical staff. I am already getting hammered by obamacare and now have to create an expensive human resources staff to administer it. I had no need for HR since I provided zero benefits for my 90 employees prior to this mess.
Bobster - IF you actually own a company and don't have a tax accountant, you're a blithering idiot!
Sanity, you are probably the most bitter person posting here, day in and day out. Have you ever considered medication?
Jack,
Typical liberal behavior: It's "You lie!!" LOL! or "You idiot!!" LOLOL! Or my favorite, "Blame Bush!!" LOLOLOL!!!
Liberals. God love em! LMFAO!!
Bobster,
What is the name of your company and where is it located?
RedRover,
Why do you care what or where Bobster's Company is ? Need a job ? Lol
No thank you I have a job.
Just wondering how Boobster can stay in business along with his competition when he is unable to take tax loopholes because he does not understand how to take advantage of them.
Unless of course he pays low, low wages and no benefits. Does not sound like a very reputable place to work.
They will be calling the President "Blue Balls Obama". He wined and dined them, bought them an expensive meal, flattered them to no end, yet they still won't let him get to first base.
The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) better bring their best table manners. The GOP/Teabeggers had better be very respectful to the United States Of America, and these GOP/Teabeggers need to keep "Super Spewing" out of the dinner conversations. The GOP/RNC had better 'comprehend' that the President is not incompetent, and is able to discuss many issues in full. The Teabeggers had better not act Cognitively Disabled, and the GOP/RNC had better keep their Mental Illness issues out of the dinner discussions. The GOP/Teabeggers are coming for a free meal at the White House. Is that not a form of 'taking?' Make sure that the Teabeggers do not steal the silverware, and that they do not ask for a Doggie Bag for their "Budget Leftovers. Now the GOP/RNC Teabeggers are going to try and sell the President a pile of manure. The facts that the Teabeggers have not figured out yet? Is that this President is not buying! Have a good dinner Mr. President, and order the GOP/Teabeggers to keep their burping/farting out of all dinner conversations.
Typical libbie .. trying to law down the law for dinner while pouring out your usual venomous garbage !
Calling yourself "Progressive" while pouring out "Regressive" and inflammatory remarks makes you a fool !
Jim, is your mirror broken? Must be. The first two words in your post pretty much make the rest of your comments silly.
NimmyJumbers doesn't think in a linear fashion... He's outside the envelope. All the time. That's why he figures that rooting for AND with the piglets will one day equal bacon.... It's a custom combination called "trickle-down-belly-futures" and it only works for the truly devoted.
Who said he wasn't incompotent, he is the most incompotent and arrogant president that we have ever had.
classic Obama... "100's off thousands of jobs could be lost due to cuts.. hey.. I have an idea.. lets spend a few thousand on a diner to talk about what we should be doing all day long..." and lib morons just eat this up! such incredible fools! Good thing he did his part and cut those elaborate tours of the white house... lmao!!!!
typical libtard
obama is the most incompetent president the world has ever seen and all the morons voted for him
You know, those Capitol janitors will not get as much overtime. I'm sure they think less pay, that they're taking home, does hurt."
— Gene Sperling, director of the White House economic council, on ABC News' "This Week," March 3, 2013
"On the issue of the janitors, if you work for an hourly wage and you earn overtime, and you depend on that overtime to make ends meet, it is simply a fact that a reduction in overtime is a reduction in your pay."
— White House spokesman Jay Carney, news briefing, March 4
At a news conference last Friday, President Obama claimed that, "starting tomorrow," the "folks cleaning the floors at the Capitol" had "just got a pay cut" because of the automatic federal spending cuts known as the sequester.
The president very quickly earned Four Pinocchios for that statement, especially after senior officials at the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), the federal agency that employ janitors on the House side, and the office of the Sergeant at Arms (SAA), which employs janitors on the Senate side, issued statements saying the president's comments were not true.
Still, the White House has kept up its spin offensive, claiming that a cut in "overtime" was a de facto pay cut and thus the president was right — or at least not wrong.
So, we wondered: How much overtime do Capitol Hill janitors actually make?
The Facts
First of all, we should note that the White House's story kept evolving as we reported last week's column. It's almost as if the president's aides had to scramble to come up with reasons why the president could be correct, without actually knowing the facts.
So, when we forwarded to White House aides an AOC memo saying no furloughs were planned, White House aides latched onto a line about overtime reductions. For a couple of hours, we were also told that the janitors were on contract — and contracts were being curtailed. But that line of reasoning turned out to be incorrect. Then, after the statements from the Capitol were issued, there was no longer any response.
But, as seen by the quotes above, the talking point about "overtime" did not fade away.
AOC officials declined to discuss janitor compensation, but SAA officials were willing to share details. Given that the AOC and SAA janitors essentially work side by side, it is reasonable to assume that the pay statistics are roughly similar.
Bret H. Swanson, assistant sergeant at arms for operations and the manager of cleaning technicians, said 27 people are employed on the night cleaning shift and 16 people on a day shift; a majority of the cleaning takes place at night. There is a differential for the overnight shift, so the night janitors earn an average of $51,644 a year and the day janitors earn an average of $49,481.
And the overtime pay? It averaged $304 per employee in fiscal year 2012 and $388 per employee thus far in the current fiscal year. "Cleaning technicians do not earn what I would consider to be a great deal of overtime pay," Swanson said.
In other words, overtime amounts to only pittance of the overall pay — about $6.50 a week on top of wages of $1,000 a week. That's much different from Carney's claim of having to "depend on that overtime to make ends meet."
Indeed, even before the sequester was implemented, Capitol Hill janitors have already earned more overtime pay than they did in all of last year. Swanson said the higher amount so far this year is because of "the demands of beginning a new Congress and hosting a presidential inauguration during a weekend that also included a federal holiday."
Swanson said that, as reported, SAA would work on trying to drive down overtime requirements for employees for the rest of the year. But, for the rest of the sequester, the janitors are already ahead of the game.
A White House spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
The Pinocchio Test
We don't try to play gotcha here at The Fact Checker. When Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) was ridiculed for saying last week that 170 million jobs would be lost because of the sequester, we dropped our inquiry when we realized she had corrected her statement — to the official Congressional Budget Office estimate of 750,000 jobs — later in the same news conference. Everyone makes mistakes, and that's understandable.
The quicker the mistake is cleaned up, the better. As Education Secretary Arne Duncan showed this week, a little humility, even a bit late, can be a good thing.
But a clean-up brigade shouldn't simply try to deflect and obfuscate. Apparently, the president assumed — incorrectly — that the janitors on Capitol Hill would get a pay cut. Rather than admit an error, White House aides doubled down on their talking points about overtime being essential to their livelihood, without actually knowing the truth.
Clearly, the sequester is hurting segments of the government and will cut the pay of some government workers. It would be better to focus on those people rather than imaginary victims.
Maybe Michelle can give the place a good cleaning, now that they've decided to stop the public tours the only dirt will be from guests who come to spend the night lobbying for their corporate donors. Now that I think about it that's as dirty as it can be!
hrlybob - oh, like Laura cleaned when the oil scammers visited and stayed at the White House while Bush was President?
@ Seeking
Yup just like Laura.
NoMore Tax..
Could you check into the FAA statement..As one who worked for the FAA ..IT IS NOT just air traffic control.
The FAA is very large. They employ many thousands. They have carpenters , electricians, receptionist , sectaries, supply people .. They have real estate, security inspector, airframe inspector, rules and compliance inspectors.. They even have a dept of SPACE yes as in outer space rules and regs..They have a training school in OKC that puts most college s to shame in size and personal.. Much much more.
The FAA has weather obs equipment at airports. Some are under direct maintenance of the FAA . Some are contract maint.. The FAA contracts the National Weather Service to do maintenance on FAA weather machines..
YET sequestration cuts will only be done to ATC and to hurt the flying public .
usmc -
It's called poitical grandstanding. Close the White House, Cancel flights - - - There were NEVER any CUTS! There were, once agian, only reductions in increases (and tiny ones).
Suckers!!!!
Government Liars -
How large was your 2012 Budget?
How large is your 2013 Budget? Including the couple of percent sequestration penalty?
HOW THE HELL CAN YOU BE TALKING CUTS?
Americans can now be killed by drones without due process and trial and without reprisal. A sad day for the Republic, no doubt a rejoice day for the Socialist State. Sad.
... and the difference between a swat sniper and a drone is what?
collateral damage, sparky.
kittycat, Bigger boom.
Urban ... you have jumped to the conclusion that it would be used on US soil with no heed being paid to collateral damage.
stanboy
the target would hear neither.
You have nothing to fear about that unless you are like those Wackos in Waco. Do you belong to a militia?
The only garbage here is in the little "Richie Rich Ryan" Budget Plan. That is fact! The only fool here is currently the Speaker of GOP/Teabegger "House Of Hoodlum's." The GOP/Teabegger have been "Regressive' in their lack of 'compromising' with the President since 2010. A typical Teabegger not able to read all information presented to them carefully, and unable to use facts in their so-called discussions. What Rand Paul is now doing on the House Floor right now is not only "Regressive." It is total "Political Garbage." Another GOP/Teabegger Fillibuster. Really? Rand Paul is is "Super Spewing" on the House Floor right now! Yes jim-1455434. This is truely garbage!
Sounds to me that you are part of the problem here.
Your entire comment is filled of uncreative put downs and lacks any real substance.
Progressive, You should just start shooting every Republican you see, because you clearly have a deep hatred for all of them. Which is a shame, because that is part of the problem.
This is really funny, A deuch bagger talking about the tea party.
If you have to resort to name calling, you aren't making much of an argument.
Progressive=Forward 11 -
Do you sit in the cubicle next to Fisty or next to SeekingSanity? Do the brownies Bev from Chicago brings into the office really have hash in them? Do you walk past the crack smokers on the stoop of your crack house office or do you stop and take a quick hit before you strap in at your desk and start spewing?
@KC, Ha, cubicle, office? That's rich. You are assuming Feisty and Seeking are actually working.
I finally have something to like about Lindsay Graham!
He cancels public tours of the white house because of the sequester but takes his fellow thieves out to an expensive dinner to figure out how to white wash the deficit. Throw all these guys out of office and lets elect some new congressmen and senators who don't know all the latest ways to line their pockets at the taxpayer expense. I'd sign a pledge not to re-elect any incumbents to office, anybody interested?
They should have had Michelle order pizza delivery. Or at least had one of the Secret Service guys "head for the border" at Taco Bell. Either would seem more appropriate with the budget cuts that are to be sooooo devastating.
$60M for Syrian rebels, $250M for Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood but not enough nickels in the piggy bank to fund those self guided White House tours. If you pay taxes, you should be really pissed.
Hrlybob,
Agreed but only if Obama is booted out with them.
Wall Street is making alot of bread. The US Corporations are still making alot of bread. The GOP/Teabeggers might want to admit to the President. That they 'broke bread' with each other at the Caucus Steakhouse Restaurant on the evening of January 20, 2009. The Teabeggers should explain to the President what their 'blood oath' was all about, and what is their deeper economic/political objectives. The GOP/Teabeggers on this evening not only broke bread. They broke their 'oath' to defend the US Constitution. The Teabeaggers broke thier 'oath' to move the US Economy forward. The GOP/Teabeggers broke their 'oath' to defend the Office Of The Presidency Of The United States Of America. They broke their 'oath' to defend those citizens that are unable to defend themselves economically. The GOP/Teabeggers broke their 'oath' to all the citizens of the United States Of America. The GOP/Teabeggers on the evening of January 20, 2009 drank alot, and 'broke' more bread and their 'oaths' in US Poltical History. Is this treason that is still being committed by the GOP/Teabeggers?? Come to your own conclusions my fellow citizens.
Wow...dude take your tin foil hat off.
Both sides by and large feel they are doing what is right for the country.
Progressive,
The President is the one committing Treason over and over,He isn't clear on his job description apparently,Look up the Executive Orders a President is allowed to use when and why,Its very clearly described,But then look at what Obama has used Them for.....I can't wait till Congress grows Balls and brings him up on charges. And no I will not explain to you All his acts of treason,You all know very well what they are,And denial doesn't take them away....
Obama is even having E-mails tracked, media persons tracked Anyone for that matter who dare speak out against his pathetic disgusting Rein of Treason,Obama seems to be above the law,A American 16 yr old boy was murdered by a drone because Obama and Holder deemed him "A Threat".....yeah he would never do that to a American without Due Process/trial.....Oh wait he already did,You better pull your head out,Obama is not Americas friend.
Progressive, why is wealth always used in the same sentence with repubs? Do you know the wealth of all of the dems? In Congress dems outweigh them easy. Look at big fat Al Gore. And he is fat in the gut and wallet, but he thinks he is slick and sells environment to people like you and you lap it up. Probably doesn't even give a Christmas bonus to the immigrant that cleans his 12,000 sq ft. environmentally unfriendly, resource-sucking home. And he is just like you, down with the big corporations! They are ruining this country. I said this before and I will say it again, you cannot profit off of corporations, make a living, pay a lower rate for fuel, and then condemn. Capitalism is built for profits. Individuals take care of one another. If that ain't happening for you, probably need new friends, family or citizenship.
Seriously, WHY IS President Obama wasting his time? All they want is for him to put Social Security on the Table!
If he does, well .............. F HIM, for I am THROUGH WITH OBAMA ... THE PUNK, THE WIMP, THE CHUMP!
If he does, for he has ALWAYS BEEN A TEA BAGGER, DRESSED UP AS A DEMOCRAT! Lord knows, I WISH his mother-n-law was surviving off of SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS! Because she can live LARGE off of his wealth, he does not give a HOOT about the rest of us!
For Obama is WORSE THAN BONER AND THE TEA BAGGER'S! For there is NOTHING GOOD I CAN WISH FOR HE AND HIS FAMILY .......... GO PERFORM ORAL SEX ON THE RACIST'S, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY WANTING TO PLEASE ............ 50O RACIST'S, IN COMPARISON TO 50 MILLION AMERICANS .... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
President Obama, WHY did you even bother to run and become President; for you are USELESS to the 99% of us! I believe, I DESPISE YOU MORE than the Racist's and TRAITOR'S you're up against!
For the least that you can do and say to these bastards, is HELL F'G NO!
Get lost a-hole.
Earthie - all that and you haven't heard what the President will be proposing? Can you say "over the top?" Sheish!
earthie, what an idiot. I'm not even going to try and rationalize with this stupid drivel. I hear you johnny get lost @sshole
You may think seniors go brain dead at age 65 but we don't. We already know what he is proposing and has proposed. A chained COLA which reduces the already inadequate and low balled COLA for Social Security.
He has proposed Amnesty for 11 million illegals which will cost the treasury trillions if allowed to become law because they will draw more in welfare benefits than they will pay in taxes. 47 percent already pay no income tax and most of the 11 million will join them.
He is now trying to weasel out of the sequester because he is getting heat from the public. Let the sequester stand. I guarantee you there is a deal hoping to be made for one if not all of the above and it will be done in secret. Bet there are no reporters at dinner.
Yep all the repubs want is Obama to put medicare and social security on the table so they can eat it all up so the elderly , handicap, medicare ,poor can do without food and medicine and don't close the loop holes that makes the rich more wealthy..
Obama doesn't do anything unless it helps him or the Dems chances in 2014. Its good that the Republicans had a lunch with Obama but unless he has a great idea that helps the country take it with a grain of salt cause he has an angle.
Yes doing whats right for the economy and the country!
Thats an angle to Republicans.
How sickening.
What a shame that the President has to maneuver around the John Boehners of the world to even have a chance of striking a deal with Republicans. Republicans are so petrified to even look like they are cooperating with this President that its getting ridiculous as they are supposed to be representing America as a whole not just the far right Norquist Pledge A holes.
America is watching very carefully!
FOOD FIGHT!!!!!!!
Ahh yes, the Democrats are out yelling how the Republicans won't work with them.
First, both sides are ridiculous.
Second, you cannot use the other side's idiocy as an excuse for your own.
Third, in the end the leader is responsible for getting people together. Even GWB was able to accomplish this when the Dems took over.
Fourth, the President is unwilling to do any spending cuts, despite already getting tax hikes, he now wants more with little or no spending cuts. The Republicans feel they have given enough in the way of tax hikes and want real spending cuts.
Fifth, both parties agreed to the Sequester and regardless of whose idea it was or wasn't neither side is willing to give on their principles.
Lastly, the sequester will not cause the end of the world and the President is very afraid that his fear mongering will be shown for what it was.
hitchiker1. Now that is very funny!
Progressive....can you tell me why the gap between poor and rich has continued to grow despite the President's supposed "spread the wealth" policies? Remember he had two years where he needed not a single Republican vote to do anything, yet the "gap" has grown.
Who's picking up the tab for the dinner, can't be the taxpayers with the sequester in place? The stock market has gone up for three days after the sequester, must mean Wall Street agrees with the tax reductions. I myself wish it was at least 4 to 5 times more. The month of Feb the government borrowed another 253 billion, yikes.
Wow the nuts are really out here today!
Progressive....Please tell me how centralizing more and more power in Washington will make it easier for the little guy to get a business started. Wouldn't this mean that the already powerful would wield more and more influence, as only they would have the means necessary to get their voices heard?
Don't more regulations and taxes increase the barriers to entry for small businesses, thus giving the large corporations a competitive advantage?
Progressive Policy - Increased Business Regulation
Progressive Hope - The government will be able to prevent this or that danger/unfair practice and will promote the general welfare of all
Progressive Policy Result - More regulations and higher taxes to enforce these regulations increases start-up and other entry costs. This prevents small businesses from getting going and limits the abilities of those already started to grow. The large corporations have the means and ability to overcome the increased regulations and taxes, so they grow even larger, while small businesses are slowly killed. The large corporations are less innovative and innovation/growth is slowed.
"Hiring last month was spread evenly across small, medium and large businesses, the ADP report showed. Private sector hiring in January had been skewed heavily toward small businesses."
From today's ADP job report.

In other words, again, you're full of it.
Dear WTO and Santa Claus,
I am the US Government. Please raise my Credit Card Debt Ceiling limit. I promise someone else will pay it off after I am out of office. If the next guy can not pay it off remember junk bond yields are much higher than other types of bonds.
Sincerely,
George W. Bush
And the republicans will be made to look stupid again. When will they ever learn. Liberal Democrats are more dangerous to this country than a Muslims flying planes over NY.
Villum1 - Republicans need no assistance in looking stupid. They do it all by themselves. Your comment is an indication of why that is true!
I didn't mean to vote for Villum,s comment, and could not take my vote back.
A lot of people who voted for Odumbo would like to take their vote back as well.
bobcb, are you really John Kerry
What Obama got the pop and elec vote.... if you and more would educate yourselves our Country would be in a lot better shape. Ignorance leads to/supports hate! And ignorance means a lack of knowledge... wasn't sure you'd look that up.
Rethuglicans are just thugs. That is why you better get used to the idea of there not being a Rethuglican party. You can't sh** on half the country and survive. To many people have seen what a gaggle of thugs you have become. Ok now spin it any way you like but, you can't change the truth with bull sh**.
Who would want to walk across the street to have dinner with this moron?
gringo - I know, the fact that the President would have to go ANYWHERE to meet with the likes of Boehner, McConnell, etc., is amazing. Morons - that's all the GOP has anymore!
seeking sanity, Keep seeking. You're a long way off.
Obama owns the republicans. They will do whatever he asks them to do.
No, they just told him they were serving fried chicken.
And watermelon?
Gringo guess you think you are a genius don't you. Harvard the greatest college in the USA only hires morons as instructors is what you think. All these idiots that calls the president an idiot and moron is complete fools when they post such an idiotic comment.
Fried chicken and watermelon shows what racist those remarks are. Must be either a Neo-Nazi or a KKK member to make those comments very unpatriotic American like.
and collard greens with chit lens
bandit - that would probably be your menu but the Obama's have very good taste and would never be caught eating chitlens. Collard greens - maybe - if they're cooked properly!
