*** Look who’s coming to dinner: As we've written before, the chief criticism about President Obama for both Republicans and Democrats -- fair or not -- is that he hasn't personally wooed members of Congress; he acts as if talking to Congress is a burden and something to be avoided. But after his inability to get Republicans to negotiate to replace the budget cuts that went into effect last week, that's changing, per the New York Times. “Mr. Obama has invited about a dozen Republican senators out to dinner on Wednesday night, after speaking with several of them by phone in recent days, according to people familiar with the invitation. And next week, according to those people and others who did not want to be identified, he will make a rare foray to Capitol Hill to meet separately with the Republican and Democratic caucuses in both the Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House.” In other words, he’s going around the Republican leadership to build relationships to get things passed. You aren’t going to get Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn to vote for your initiatives, but perhaps it’s possible to get a Lindsey Graham or Lamar Alexander. Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush went around leadership all the time to find Democrats they could work with. Obama, on the other hand, has always tried to work with the GOP leadership. But remember this: Folks are elected to leadership for one of two things: to ATTAIN power for their party, or to KEEP power for their party.

*** The Gang of 18: And while we don’t know who he’s taking to dinner (it’s taking place outside the White House) -- and even if the dinner is on due to the snowstorm in DC -- the 18 GOP senators who voted against the filibuster against Chuck Hagel are a good start: Lamar Alexander (TN), Kelly Ayotte (NH), Roy Blunt (MO), Richard Burr (NC), Saxby Chambliss (GA), Tom Coburn (OK), Thad Cochran (MS), Susan Collins (ME), Bob Corker (TN), Jeff Flake (AZ), Lindsey Graham (SC), Orrin Hatch (UT), Mike Johanns (NE), John McCain (AZ), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Jeff Sessions (AL), Richard Shelby (AL), and John Thune (SD). These are your pool of potential Senate GOP votes for immigration reform, Supreme Court nominations, etc.
*** Tours of Duty? Speaking of the sequester budget cuts, the news yesterday was that White House tours are now being canceled. Roll Call: “The sequester cuts began to hit home for members Tuesday, as House leaders announced budget cutbacks around the Capitol complex and the White House said it would cancel tours starting this weekend. Stopping White House tours particularly affects lawmakers because constituents go through their members to arrange them and it’s up to congressional offices, not the White House, to call constituents to inform them of the cancellation.” (While White House tours have been cancelled, House Speaker John Boehner last night announced that tours of Congress will continue.) Republicans have griped – and even ridiculed – the cancellation of the White House tours. But isn’t this a no-win situation for the Obama administration? So you layoff or furlough employees -- but you keep the tours? And honestly, ridiculing the White House for this spending cut undermines the idea of spending cuts. Because one can argue that a small cut here doesn’t matter ,or a small cut there doesn’t matter. But eventually cuts add up..
*** Welcome to life as a potential presidential candidate! When you leave open the door to a presidential bid, and are no long just an elder statesman for the party, every little thing starts to become magnified – which has happened to Jeb Bush over the past 24 hours. “As political re-entries go, Jeb Bush’s has been rocky,” the New York Times’ Shear writes. “Mr. Bush quickly found himself backpedaling from [his opposition to a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants] on Tuesday. In fact, he told a series of interviewers that he could easily support granting citizenship in the context of a comprehensive approach to immigration.” (So he’s owning the flip-flop if you will; not fighting it, which is actually minimizing some of the damage.) Here’s something to remember about Bush: He hasn’t run a race since 2002 (before Facebook, Twitter, and more partisan media). And the backlash he’s received in the past 24 hours could either convince him that he doesn’t have the stomach for a run, or it could steel him for what to expect over the next three and a half years.
*** Do conservatives really want to win? After learning yesterday that next week’s Conservative Political Action Conference has invited Donald Trump to speak -- but not Chris Christie, the country’s most popular Republican governor -- conservative writer Ramesh Ponnuru asks this question: Do conservatives really want to win elections? “I wish New Jersey were governed more conservatively: that Christie had not, for example, agreed to expand Medicaid last week on federal taxpayers’ tab. But we’re talking about New Jersey here. It’s a state that last elected a Republican to the Senate in 1972 and last went for a Republican presidential candidate in 1988. It went for President Barack Obama by a larger margin than any other state governed by a Republican. Conservatives shouldn’t just cut Christie some slack. They ought to listen to him to find out how a pro-life critic of unions has become so popular in unfriendly territory -- if, that is, they want the political map of the country to get any redder.”
*** Independents’ Day: As the 2012 presidential election proved, self-described political independents aren’t the swing group that many observers once thought; after all, Obama lost the independent vote by five percentage points and still won the election. But indies are still a fascinating demographic, and our most recent NBC/WSJ poll sums them up in five words: They don’t like almost anyone. They have unfavorable opinions of the Republican Party (19% positive, 44% negative) and the Democratic Party (24% positive, 42% negative), and they disapprove of the president’s job performance (46% disapprove, 41% approve). What’s more, a majority of indies in our poll disagreed with what congressional Republicans (56%), congressional Democrats (52%), and Obama (50%) are all proposing to do. And a plurality of independents said “neither” party would be best at handling nine of the 12 issues the survey polled.
*** So who are independents? Per our pollsters, independents made up 17% of all respondents from our combined January and February surveys. They’re MORE likely to be younger, male, have less formal education, and they’re more likely to have a gun in the household. They’re LESS likely to be African American, a 2012 voters, or a self-described liberal. So before you start thinking these folks could become a constituency group for an indie candidate like Bloomberg, be sure to check out that gun stat. These folks look a bit more like the old Ron Paul crowd.
*** Nothing but a “G” thang -- Garcetti vs. Greuel: As many had expected, City Councilman Eric Garcetti (D) and Controller Wendy Greuel (D) advanced to the May 21 run-off in Los Angeles’ mayoral race, with Garcetti grabbing 33% of the vote and Greuel 29%, according to the Los Angeles Times. They were followed by conservative radio host Kevin James (R) at 16.4% and City Councilwoman Jan Perry (D) at 15.9%. Given the close margin between Garcetti and Greuel, the run-off looks like a jump ball with Garcetti having the more famous last night (his father is former L.A. District Attorney Gil Garcetti) and with Greuel trying to become the city’s first female mayor. (The swing vote most likely will be Latinos and Republicans.) And get this, per the L.A. Times: Just 16% of registered voters participated in the election. Sheesh…

Last week we saw Sean Hannity's meltdown over the smears and LIES Congressman Keith exposed. Now we have Bill O'Reilly losing it with his smears and LIES.
O'Reilly repeatedly claimed that President Obama "refuses" to endorse specific spending cuts, shouting at Colmes, "Give me one damn program he said he'd cut!" even as Colmes highlighted Medicare and Medicaid as two programs Obama has proposed cutting:

There's plenty of animosity on First Read pages. There's no shortage of people here who don't like each other for one reason or another. No problem. We can ignore each other. We can snipe at each other. We can attack each other's posts all day long.
I can barely tolerate the nonsense that comes from the likes of Albany Joe, White Collar Auto, Fairfax Bill, Jim Spence, and JH-lotsanumbers to mention a few. While I believe their posts are filled with inaccuracies, unsupportable claims, talking points, and outright lies, that is not the worst they can do.
To their credit, there are levels of filth to which they will not descend - depths that give comfort to Ben-lotsanumbers, Damage123, Caesar Augustus, and their vile counterparts. They are the bottom feeders who claim a relationship with Jesus, a relationship with their god.
The icon who towers above all others in this regard is Ben-lotsanumbers. You know him by his avatars. During the holiday season, Ben slathered himself in hypocrisy and gave us a nativity scene. When the gun debate began in earnest, he switched to an avatar that included three semi-automatic pistols. How very Christian. Today, he pathetically uses our national symbol - the eagle - to advertise his patriotism.
He lies routinely, and he cannot conceal his misogynistic views, but what sets Ben and his ilk apart from ordinary liars and women-haters is his defense. We're all sinners, he says. We all sin, so it's OK to sin. Why not? God forgives him, he says; at least the god Ben has created.
The Bible recounts two stories that Ben has missed. The first is the most important story in the Bible - the tale of the Garden of Eden. There, God warns his creations, Adam and Eve, of the one sin for which they cannot be forgiven. Do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Do not think you can know the mind of God. Of course, they did eat from the tree and learned the sin of hubris. They did believe they could know the mind of God.
The second story is of Moses meeting with God. Moses returned to give the Israelites the law of God. Honor your Creator. As far as your fellow man; honor your parents, don't steal, don't murder, don't lie, don't covet. God made it clear He had given mankind free will. Don't abuse it.
Ben doesn't know that God. Ben has his own god. Ben's god says he can call people filthy names, he can lie, he can do any damned thing he wants. It's OK, because everybody does it. Abuse your free will as much as you want. Ben's god does exactly what Ben says he should do. Ben's god forgives his hypocrisy and wanton disregard for any rules that displease him.
That is not the God of the Bible. That God stands in judgment of Ben. Based on even the loosest interpretation of the Bible, it's very hard to imagine God saying, "Hey Ben, sure you were vile and vicious. Sure you never even tried to follow My commandments. Sure you pretended you knew My mind. I was kidding about that free will thing. No sweat Ben. You've ordered Me to forgive you."
It would give me great comfort to believe in a god, but I don't. I'd like to believe that Ben will go to an unimaginably horrible hell, but I don't. However, he's created his own hell in his own mind. The way he expresses his misery on these pages is a suitable enough hell to satisfy me.
Here is a partially redacted copy of an Email that circulated Capitol Hill yesterday. It proves that the Obama administration is doing everything in their power to make sequester as painful as possible for no other reason then political gains by blaming Republicans. Apparently any means to an end is what liberals are all about. Pretty pathetic tactics for a president and the Obama administration. Yeah, Obama and Democrats need more tax revenue.

During the Management team conference call this morning, I asked if there was any latitude in how the sequestration cuts related to aquaculture could be managed (e.g. spread across the Region).
The question was elevated to APHIS BPAS. The response back was, "We have gone on record with a
notification to Congress and whoever else that "APHIS would eliminate assistance to producers
in 24 States in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture industry, unless they provide funding to cover the costs. "So, it is our opinion that however you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be." I have been asked to provide a plan by Friday that will outline the implement of the $263,000 aquaculture reduction. I will use the information you have already provided. If I need additional information, I will let you know.

An email does not say what can actually be done legally and what cannot. Many people do not understand the law.
Our President and no other person, what-so-ever, can decide where the cuts are made, what programs get funded and which do not. That was part of the law created with the Budget Control Act of 2011.
The cuts are across the board cuts which is why everyone has said that "these are dumb cuts".
As General Ray Odierno said Friday on "Morning Joe" and "CBS This Morning" under sequestration he is not allowed to move funds around in FY13.

Really Dennis? Then explain why Obama would cut out White House tours entirely, and not just reduce them until they fell in line with the cuts? Across the board as you describe would be line item by line item. Meaning reduced, but not cut. You can try and spin that Email anyway you want, but the message is very clear and there is no doubt of its intent. Note the line in the Email Dennis, "however you manage that reduction" indicates there are options.

so there are reports this morning that the white house employs 3 calligraphers (fancy writing style for the ill-informed) on staff at a combined salary (not counting benefits) of over $275K. it appears as though the white house believes it to be far more important to have fancy writers doing their thing as during this sequester as opposed to allowing the continuation of some white house tours.
clearly trying to make the small increases (compared to fy2012) in spending have the biggest dramatic impact -- Obama the Drama Queen -- the shoes would seem to fit him well.

WCA, what's pretty sad is not that the press makes this a story but rather that the press never bothered to report the GOPers consistently turned down all the invitations President Obama has extended to them since taking office in January, 2009. The media doesn't even mention the 2009 weekly cocktail party invitations President Obama extended in an effort to promote bipartisanship; or the State Dinners, the invitations to view movies, and other efforts to socialize.
We have heard GOPTPers complain that President Obama doesn't make an effort to communicate, doesn't invite them over, etc., yet those same GOPTPers never acknowledge or mention THEY TURNED HIM DOWN, THEY SAID NO.

WOW! What a fun filled Dinner for the President with 12 Senators who don't like him and only wish him to fail. Should be a fun filled evening. Will it accomplish anything? But one can only try with this cast of clowns we have in Congress today. At least he's reaching out. Perhaps the Repugs will get the hint and reciprocate in kind. Hold your breath. :-). Lots of luck Mr. President, it's going to be a long haul till 2014 when you take back the House and then can accomplish some good for our Nation.

As much as the Republicans have been howling about Obama's economic policies, the DOW hit a record yesterday and has more than doubled under Obama. Despite the sequester, all the blocking, stalling, and obstruction of the Republican party the economy is growing on it's own.

While this statement is true, the White House in general has employed a bunch of "useless" occupations. Ones that jump out at my are ones like "Gift Analyst".
While the Bush Admin didn't employ a calligrapher, they had other employees that were just as vital to the running of the White House as the calligraphers are to the current administration.
In short, a comparison of a badly run 2008 White House to a badly run 2012 White House really shouldn't be the barometer you want to set.

Rick, in that email, the author specifically asks about cuts to "aquaculture"; the response is answering how the cuts affect that specific budget area of "aquaculture". It isn't talking about the rest of the various areas of Wildlife cuts, it's a response to the "aquaculture" aspect. Read it again. Whether it's a real person or a manfactured email remains unknown because lots of fictitious emails float around.
repo -- as long as the administration wants to inflict the most possible pain by these little cuts you are right, there is no one winning here except some politicians.

Pretty sad that all the Republicans that Obama invited to a screening of the movie Lincoln refused to attend. Pretty sad that Boehner turns down all invitations Obama sends him to state dinners. What's remarkable about this latest dinner invitation isn't that Obama made it, but that he got any Republicans to agree to show up. Maybe the Hate Obama Caucus is losing some steam.

Ney isn't the first person to describe John Boehner as lazy but he is the first republican to admit it publicly. For years, staffers working in the House and Senate said the same thing, said he was the last one to arrive and the first one out the door in the afternoon and the first one to hit the popular bars. I believe it was Lawrence O'Donnell who said Boehner was one of the laziest legislators in Congress that he saw during O'Donnell's years working in Congress. Judging from Speaker Boehner's 112th Congress results and his failed record so far in the 113th, using lazy to describe him is being kind.

DAILLON, Switzerland — On Jan. 3, the day Sandy Hook Elementary students returned to school in Newtown, Conn., Florian Berthouzoz leaned out his window and opened fire on this tranquil Swiss village with an old military carbine and a 12-gauge shotgun.
By the time he finished shooting, three women were killed, apparently at random, and two men were wounded. Berthouzoz was brought down by a police officer’s bullet in the chest.
Although separated by thousands of miles and the Atlantic Ocean, the United States and Switzerland have in common long-standing traditions of unusually high levels of weapons possession among their citizens. Behind Switzerland’s image of whispering bankers and scrubbed chalets, it also has, like the United States, a strong and vocal segment of the population that considers attempts to tighten gun laws as attacks on individual liberties and the national character.
The Small Arms Survey, in a study conducted in 2007 by researchers attached to the University of Geneva, estimated that Switzerland has about 3.4 million firearms of all kinds among a population of about 8 million, or 46 for every 100 people.
This makes it exceptional in Europe. France, which lies next door, was found to have about 19 million firearms among a population of about 65 million, or 31 for every 100 people, and it surrounds ownership of all weapons with strict registration requirements.
The United States, the survey’s estimates showed, leads the world, rivaled only by Yemen. Americans were found to have about 270 million firearms in a population of about 314 million, or 89 for every 100 people.
Although Switzerland ranks third in gun possession, its history has not been stained with as many random killings as the United States. Sixteen have been recorded since 1990, most accounting for only a few deaths

This is in line with a Swiss law, similar to that in the United States, allowing assault rifles such as AK-47s or M-16s, but only in the semiautomatic mode, in which the trigger must be pulled for each shot, instead of the fully automatic military mode, in which the weapon can fire bursts that last as long as the trigger is held down.
Those who buy handguns or semiautomatic rifles from Swiss firearms retailers must undergo a background check, which can take more than a month. But used weapons often change hands several times in informal purchases that are not tracked. Switzerland’s 26 cantons have individual registries, but they do not share information, making tracking even more difficult. In any case, cantonal authorities often do not enforce registration requirements vigorously.
Suter said Switzerland’s attitude toward gun possession stems from its long tradition of citizen soldiers, ordinary Swiss who are required to suit up and report for military training every year and who get their own weapon to keep at home in case of emergency. The tradition is part of Switzerland’s national character, he said.

Speaker Boehner voted YEA for President Bush's two huge and unfunded rounds of tax cuts which mostly favored the wealthy investors. Boehner voted YEA for the 2001 rebate checks, he voted YEA for two unfunded wars, he voted YEA for the unfunded Medicare Advantage Rx Program. In other words, Speaker Boehner voted YEA to huge deficits and increasing the National Debt. Speaker Boehner never met a spending bill he did not like whether funded or unfunded.
Representative Paul Ryan is another of the Deficit Hawk Drum Beaters yet Ryan, like his fearless leader Boehner, never met a Bush/Cheney/GOP spending bill he did not like whether funded or unfunded. Paul Ryan voted YEA to increase the deficit, and add to the National Debt. Check the voting records of today's GOP Deficit Hawk Drum Beaters and one will find that they voted YEA for it. They talk the talk but have not walked the walk in decades. The last GOP president to reduce the debt was Richard Nixon.
The GOP claims it wants to reduce the deficit, pay down the debt yet refuses to recognize the reality of truth--spending cuts alone cannot and will not solve the problem they voted YEA to create; in fact, drastic spending cuts during economic recovery will ultimately increase the deficit and add to the debt.
The GOP refuses to tackle the hidden deficit spending in the Tax Code. Once again we hear Speaker Boehner and his minions declare they will not increase revenues by tackling corporate tax loophole welfare by one penny. Not one penny can be taken from a multi-billionaire individuals or corporations for a hungry child, not one penny for a disabled veteran or a disabled child, not one penny for Head Start, not one penny for Special Education, not one penny for the homeless, not one penny for the disadvantaged and the poor, not one penny for Defense, Commerce, Education, Energy, Clean Air & Water, Food & Drug, National Parks, Transportation....not one penny more.
During the 1980's, President Ronald Reagan--after signing massive tax cuts into law which resulted in huge deficits and tripling of the National debt--was shown data on special interest tax loopholes and tax breaks that only benefited a few yet reduced government revenues and said he "had no idea it had gotten that bad." Reagan then ordered a complete overhaul of the Tax Code. Back then both parties in Congress actually believed in solving problems together regardless of political ideology. Since that Reagan era overhaul, the last one done, those "special interest" breaks have been lobbied back into the Tax Code.
One tax loophole is for corporate jets. Small businesses do not have corporate jets, they pay higher taxes than do multi-billion dollar profit businesses. Over 10 years, $3.2 billion is given to the owners of corporate jets in the form of a special tax break. Another tax loophole is $4 billion per year to big oil and gas; that's $40 billion over 10 years. $3.2 billion plus $40 billion over ten years may seem trivial but as Simpson-Bowles noted, there are hundreds more tax gems in the code that benefit only a few.
Speaker Boehner and the GOP House should welcome the opportunity to overhaul the Tax Cut, to rid it once and for all of never-ending special tax breaks for the few by sunsetting any tax breaks which help a flegling industry. By doing so, after paying down the debt to a reasonable level, the business tax rate the GOP claims is too high could be lowered for every business, including the small mom and pop businesses which have no corporate jets. In addition, individual income tax rate could be lowered for all. Conservatives should embrace this idea but apparently, modern conservatives do not practice what they preach--fiscal responsibility is just another GOPTP talking point.

Brown; turned up blank despite searching for him as listed on the email, searched the USDA APHIS list of directors, searched the USDA staff directory, searched several other arms of the Wildlife Group both in Raleign NC and nationally, and the answer was always: unable to locate.
I don't have enough information to give you a response.

The email, circulated around Capitol Hill, was sent Monday by Charles Brown, a director at the agency’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in Raleigh, N.C. He appears to tell his regional team about a response to his recent question on the amount of latitude he has in making cuts.
According to the partially redacted email, the response came from the Agriculture Department’s budget office and in part states: “However you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.”
The response noted that the administration had already told Congress that the APHIS would “eliminate assistance to producers in 24 states in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture industry” without additional funds.

The President does not like sequester and thinks it should be repealed. The President does not like the cuts suggested by Republicans. So where are the specific cuts the President would make? I hear some Democrats make vague references to some entitlements. But none have given specific programs they would cut. All I hear is suggestions of more tax increases. Every budget analyst including the President's own Simpson-Bowles committee has said there must be substantial cuts. Seems the President does not think so. So when will Mr. Obama get off the sidelines and start leading on this issue. He doesn't need the Republican in the House to cooperate in order to make specific suggestions about cuts.
We have no intention on cutting medicare, medicaid or social security so don't get your hopes up. Ainta goona happen. Modify those programs to realize savings - yes - cut NO. There is plenty of room to cut DOD.
There is a lot of room to cut. You want to go to war, put in a special war tax, but it has to pass before not after. Cut defense another 10%. Get rid of the DEA, we are letting illegals go but putting Americans in jail for pot. I paid $12K of federal tax this year. Cut cut cut cut then come back and ask for revenue but first to many people in this country with their hands out, farmers, EIC, small business, home owners, etc. Otherwise it is just spent and nothing happens. BUT NO DO NOT CUT TAXES, if we ever get to a surplus then lets pay the debt off. 10% of the budget is interest, that is what will take the country down. I would be willing to pay more, but everybody at least pays something and for every dollar of additional revenue then three of cuts.
