No budget cuts, reduced spending whatever has ever made that ten year span. When congress ssays they are saving this much over ten years, cut the amount by 80% since they always manage to find somewhere to "spend" that savings.

I live across the river from the White House, in Northern Virginia. I used to go downtown alot but it's not a safe thing to do anymore. I will take the metro rail and do a concert at the Verizon Center or a ballgame at Nationals Park every blue moon but I will never drive into the city ever again.

We had to pee real bad, was the real reason because of all the Dons Johns by the Washington Monument were overflowing and gross. So us and about 2000 other people tried to storm the White House. It was the only building open, but not to the public. The park police turned us away with a warning of being arrested. About 200 did get arrested but not us. We kept on walking. We peed in the bushes infront of the Dept. of Agriculture. The park police where nowhere in sight.

In 1977, cruising DC in my first ever car, 3 toned '72 Nova SS, while sitting at the light at 16th St & Pennsylvania Ave. I smoked a doobie right in front of the park polce and they did nothing other than smile at me.

In 1969 while touring the White House with my family. I had a bad cold with a stuffed up nose. My late great mother, in front of the park police. Smacked me across the room, we where in when she noticed me wipe a booger on the curtains. The park police did nothing but smile.

Now if we were reasonable on deficit reduction, the Bush tax cuts would obviously be on the table. But since half of Congress is lacking in reason, we have to forego a potentially-major deficit option in order to placate congressional constituents and wealthy backers. Thank you very much.

Make the cuts as painful as possible and watch the GOP come crawling for a balanced [i.e., tax hiking] deal.

I don't disagree with the White House tours being cut, but the fact of the matter is that they are only cutting things that are political in nature. No waste what-so-ever. Military-political cuts of manpower and training when we know they have a discretionary fund that they could have taken it all out of. Cut the tours when we know that the Executive branch has hired more people in the last five years than in the eight before. In the TSA to cause longer lines at the airport. and so on and so on.

This is political warfare at the publics expense when they could have done what the people actually want. Eliminate waste that we know is there that won't affect anyone. How many pet projects in the military could they have eliminated before they actually reduced our ability to defend ourselves?

I want them to cut government, but with responsibility. I say impeach them all!

I have a few questions. First isn't the White House our house don't we the people pay for it? What does the current family living there pay for the up keep of our house? in 24 States in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture industry, unless they provide funding to cover the costs. "So, it is our opinion that however you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be." I have been asked to provide a plan by Friday that will outline the implement of the $263,000 aquaculture reduction. I will use the information you have already provided. If I need additional information, I will let you know.

One correction on things...the Obama's in fact pay for their own clothing and food; they are not living completely free in the WH. htey also have to pay for any personal travel out of their own pockets, however, obviously, any travel is going to require security which the taxpayers handle.

Now, the loophole on that paying for their own travel is that if htey can do so and make it look like a political thing, like meeting with some higher up official in some country or such, then they can get the taxpayers to pay for the trip even if the meeting is only a meet and greet photo op that lasts an hour out of a 5-day trip (example here people not a specific incident)

Soooo many of you started slinging disparagements before you actually READ the article; the people running the tours are officers attached to the Secret Service. Like every other branch of government, they have endured an across-the-board cut to their budget. That means they can't be slipped funds from another agency or program or donor, it's ironclad. Now, the Secret Service does have a few more important things to do than guide tourists around the White House - like guard the president and vice president, investigate security threats, and more. So trimming this stop off somebody's vacation plans is not a big deal, it's a reasonable response. But it's so hard to find Reasonable on these pages.

I'd probably beg to differ. Been there, done that (first time way back in 1962, where we missed being the 1 millionth visitor - complete with personal tour and chance to meet JFK - by about 20 minutes) and for me, it's kind of over-rated. In and out before you know it. My "must-sees" on any tour of D.C. would be:

1. Arlington Cemetery, especially the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Guaranteed goosebumps.

2. Smithsonian Museum of American History. ( see yesterday's post on the Star Spangled Banner).

3. Vietnam Memorial. Guaranteed tears.

4. Ford's Theater. Most history in smallest space.

5. National Cathedral. Just gorgeous. (and I'm an atheist!).

6. U.S. Capitol tour, especially if you can get Senate or House Gallery tickets. Very enlightening (in a scary way) as to how things in Washington really work. Or not.

7. Lincoln Memorial. Just because.

8. Riding the Metro. Best argument ever for investing in public transportation.

9. Any other Smithsonian museum. There's a whole trip just in itself.

10. National Archives. Because they aren't just words on a paper, they're why we're here.

Am leaving out some obvious choices - the Holocaust Museum, MLK Memorial, etc. - because I haven't seen them yet myself. And lots of other tours were a lot better in the pre-9/11 security days - the Pentagon and the FBI, for example. The Washington Monument ceased being fun when they wouldn't let you walk up it any more.

But then, just standing in the middle of the Mall is worth the trip, isn't it? It makes it all so much more real somehow.....

The missus and I spent a lot of time on the Lincoln Memorial steps, looking out over the Mall. Being there just inspired good conversation.

Epic Failure

The White House tour is a DC visit highlight.

For those that enjoy being herded around like cattle and told where to look and when, prodded along at a fast, constant pace so they could get their daily quota through, etc.

But of course diffenet people have different levels of enjoyment. I was there a couple of years ago and one of the tour guides told us that we "just missed" obama in the hallway, as if we that would have been such a special treat. When I asked if she were serious she said she was. I then asked why they would parade him out in front of a couple hundred unscreened people when they spend days prepping for his photo ops as he parades around the country. She had no answer for why we spend millions each year "protecting" him from the public only to risk a bunch of tourists confronting him in a hallway.

The Secret Service has a budget to protect all kinds of leaders, dignitaries, Popes etc...when they come to the US. The 100 City Tour promoting Federal Spending.

Much is being made about the possible impact of sequestration on government programs for the poor and middle class, food safety, and the defense of our nation. It is somewhat surprising, therefore, for the White House to be headlining a 100 city government spending tour, transporting representatives from multiple departments and various agencies around the country to promote federal largess. If Washington is truly cutting spending on missions many consider vital, how can we at the same time promise and promote more financial assistance, much less afford this mammoth 100 city cross country tour?

That being said, I think most of us on here, Dem or Rep, believe that the cuts are necessary - we just object to WHAT is being cut.

Actually Amy, it is the right move to cut, but the President "prayed" there would be a compromise on cutting the "right" way. He only said it 500 times between January and last Friday.

However, now that the sequestor happened, he is employing scorched earth policies to curry favor and his base are following him into the rabbit hole. Heres food for thought, in a leaked e-mail from Ag., a department head is quoted as saying make sure the cuts are consistent with the WH policy of negative effects. If you think the government cant find 85 billion in wasted spending in ANY of its departments w/o effecting services, you should turn in your voter card.

Secondly, ive read and skimmed plenty of comments on this story, and not one pointed out or took issue that the story implied security for WH visits is paid through overtime. Overtime. I'll say it again. Overtime. for a 24/7 job like protecting the President, its wild that overtime ever comes into play.

Finally, have the American ppl had enough of politicans talking about more than their trems. Everything will happen "over 10 years" these days. Its dumb and needs to stop. Across the board.
