Education secretary says 'pink slips' comment was misinterpreted

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said his eyebrow-raising statement that teachers were already getting “pink slips” because of the sequester was misinterpreted and that he only meant they were getting notices of potential future effects.

Spokesman Jay Carney reiterates the administration's stance that a sequester would directly impact certain aspects of education funding. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan spoke to reporters on Wednesday about the situation.

“What I said is that teachers were getting notices, and in the district we talked about, 110 teachers have gotten notices,” Duncan said Friday after touring the Rolling Elementary School in Takoma Park, Md. “I think there was a misinterpretation that I meant they were being laid off tomorrow.”

But the education secretary still did not indicate whether these notices could be definitively linked to the sequester, or whether they were part of an unrelated warning that affected low-income schools that receive Title I funding.

Duncan made the statement on the pink slips Wednesday when he came to the White House Briefing Room, citing Kanawha County in West Virginia.

“Whether it’s all sequester-related, I don’t know," Duncan said, "but these are teachers who are getting pink slips now."

According to the Washington Post, Kanawha's school superintendent said Thursday night that no teachers have received “pink slips” or been told they would not be coming back in the fall.

He said that because the district “do[es] not know what the cuts are” to Title I, he can’t predict whether teachers will, in fact, lose their jobs.

300 kids will be dropped from Head Start in Maine...but, by golly, those rich folks will keep their tax loopholes! Whew!

http://bangordailynews.com/2013/02/24/politics/white-house-spending-cuts-to-have-broad-negative-impact-on-maine-jobs-and-programs/

Among the examples of the impact in Maine are a loss of $2.7 million in funding for primary and secondary education with 40 teaching jobs at risk, a loss of $1.4 million in environmental funding to ensure clean air and water, and the furlough of approximately 7,000 Department of Defense employees.

The white house scare tactics didn't work and the DHS letting the illegals out of jail was a mistake. 1- supervisor resigns and janet napoltano has to apologise and now arte duncan says he misspoke and I awoke to find the sun had risen and the sky didn't fall and turned on tv to see white house backtracking and the president having to clarify he was not a dictator !

and if any of you were honest , lets think back the last 4 years and can you remember when he went to the leaders of both parties and worked out an agreement ?

NO NOT obamacare that was passed by dems only ! how about a budget ? NOT 1 IN 4 YEARS.. he is good at rallying people that support him , what about the 46% of the country who voted AGAINST him ?

Amy. The sequester was way to small. People are going to have to be responsible for themselves. People are going to have to feed themselves. People are going to have to pay for there own rent, healthcare, and telephones. I as a tax payer am more than tired of all of the freeloaders. Live with it. The rich freeloaders also need to pay there own way.

Guess the next articles will be how Mr. Obama, the DHS, the Dept of Transportation, and other Progressive Cabinet members were "mis-interpreted". Guess these folks did not have their "news conferences" EDITED properly. Time to go after the media again.

This administration has more spin to come. Wait a minute....it started this morning.

Just as I predicted yesterday, this "meeting" with Congressional leaders would last only AN HOUR. Guess where you can find Mr. Obama this afternoon ? Golf course of course.

Don't victimize our teachers who have been doing more with less pay so they have made more tax payments to bail out banks. They are tasked with educating our future leaders in every field.

Maybe if the teachers unions didn't make education so costly and wasteful, the good teachers could get payed more instead of having to piggy-back the bad teachers. Btw, there are no stats proving more funding produces better educated students. A lot of charter schools have less overall funding and produce more educated graduates. No union.

BULLSH*T!!!!!!!

This was meant to be a threat to garner public support to oppose the sequester that Barrack Hussein, Jack Lew and Rob Nabors created, and then tried to put all the blame on Republicans.

Funny isn't it how on Friday, September 28 of last year, officials from the Obama administration informed defense contractors to keep the pink slips to themselves until after the election. But now they are issued and it's misinterpreted.

Arne Duncan is a LIAR just like Barrack Hussein and the rest of his clan.

Why? You mean you're totally clueless? Ha! What a joke!

Because "vouchers" don't cover the full cost of a public school education, don't even come close to paying for any "private school" education and inner city kids are poor.

The only thing "school vouchers" were good for was rich kids' parents getting a rebate on paying for private schools.

Republicans, love to call themselves "geniuses" when they're really dumb as a bag of hammers. And they wonder why people think they're "dumb".

This time it has backfired, Obama and his Democrat friends drew this up , so let them live with it . This is the only way to stop Obama;s out of control spending. The Media has also done a good job of making the public believe that it's the Republicans fault and that these Tax loopholes their talking about , are only for the rich. As I understand it, the chief loophole President Obama wants to close, as David says, is the tax break given for "carried interest."

Hedge fund managers get to pay a lower tax rate on their income from collecting a portion of the investor's profits because the tax code considers it a return on investment. But it's not really a return, it's income from the manager's labor, and should be taxed at that rate.

Closing that tax loophole would save country 21 billion over the next decade.

that is a good one to eliminate. it is a small one but we must start somewhere. but at $2B a year it does not really do very much. are there more of these rich-only deductions or loopholes? though not stated i wonder if you are blaming republicans for all of these loopholes? i hold both parties equally accountable.

our biggest challenge, in my opinion, is finding politicians on both sides with enough integrity to clean up the tax code.

it is this behavior: "Tucked inside the last-minute fiscal cliff package were more than a dozen tax loopholes, many of which will benefit Wall Street financial firms and some of the nation's biggest corporations. These breaks will cost billions of dollars in the coming year, underscoring the lobbying power of corporate interests."

i wonder why our government continues giving these special interest these opportunities. is it just financial quid pro quo? - donate to my campaign and i will take care of you?

GAO Report: Obamacare Adds $6.2 Trillion to Long-Term Deficit

        By Andrew Stiles

Obamacare will increase the long-term federal deficit by $6.2 trillion, according to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released today.

Senator Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), who requested the report, revealed the findings this morning at a Senate Budget Committee hearing. The report, he said, "confirms everything critics and Republicans were saying about the faults of this bill," and "dramatically proves that the promises made assuring the nation that the largest new entitlement program in history would not add one dime to the deficit were false."

President Obama and other Democrats attempted to win support for the health-care bill by touting it as a fiscally responsible enterprise. "I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits — either now or in the future," Obama told a joint-session of Congress in September 2009. "I will not sign it if it adds one dime to the deficit, now or in the future, period."

The new report exposes the "lack of honesty" surrounding such claims, Sessions argued. "This is how a country goes broke," he said.

Now tell me the republicans had anything to do with this... brainaic

The real problem is you hate the republicans soooo much you can't see that your own party is to blame just as much as the republicans, but you can't see the trees because of the forest either can you??

every proposed cut has a "chicken little effect." ask anyone if there is what they consider to be waste in government. I would bet the answer is yes. So let's start with the Department of Education. What is the ration of teachers (the front line) to administrators. Administration has grown exponentially. Would not a reasonable cut start there if, indeed, the Departments of Education were really concerned about kids? No child left behind! This has taken the initiative from teachers and now we have an educational system geared toward standardized tests. If this were gone, how much oversight would also be gone? the DOE's have been a failure as seen by where we rank in the world on the basic math and sciences. My point in all of this is government does not cut what is unnecessary in lieu of "throwing the gold watch" on the table and crying wolf. Perhaps a sequestration and an angry public on what is being cut rather than what should be cut will get us back on the right track.

There is something called IDEA which is federal money for special education. The Federal government says you have to educate ALL special education children. The sad thing is it does not fund it completely. When those funds stop coming schools won't be able to pay the tab for the private special eucation schools. Many schools have in house programs but the federal money doesn't cover all of it. Yes teachers will be given pink slips if the district can't pay. Not all your money comes from the state or your local real estate taxes.

              #12.1 - Fri Mar 1, 2013 5:32 PM EST

Here is an idea... have the teachers all work 12 months like the rest of us and extend school for 11 months instead of having kids take off all Summer long to be bored. That way the teachers can also teach special needs kids. Classes could very well be staggered to fit everyone's needs. Time to end the free rides.

I don't know if these pink slips have anything to do with sequestration (last night he admitted there were only 5 pink slips and they were handed out for other offenses - with the NEA on their side, the "offenses" must have been egregious!) More White House hyperbole. Bush's..Republitards...Tea Party's...Obama's fault!

It is $85 Billion, with a "B", not $85 million.

I guess it was all my fault that I correctly heard and accurately understood his lie.

Arne Duncan: Take a page from the republican playbook and just deny saying anything, even if it's on video tape and they play right in front of your eyes. First say it wasn't you, then deny saying it even if it was you. They do it all the time, just watch FOX news as proof. P.S. Howard Stern, Babba Booey!!!!!!

Secretary of Education: Why is California eliminating the requirement of algebra for eight graders? I know it's a local issue, but I still like to know what you think about it. I see it as another effort by the left to dumb down liberals, if that's possible.

Oh yea, when the comment has been so unfortunately "misinterpreted" (read recognized as unadulterated bull "stool") let us restate it in a "better light" (read say something totally different, that isn't even related to the original subject). Honestly the Administration and all the comedians in the cabinet have been putting on a virtual vaudeville act, running around like Chicken Little screaming "the Sky is Falling, the Sky is Falling". It's been quite hilarious. The truth is, we NEED TO CUT OUR CRUSHING DEBT, and there is no way to do it without pain. I ask you, who should feel that pain? Our generation(s), who voted for the total idiots that created it (past and present), or our grandchildren and great grandchildren, who are innocent of that stupidity.

Oh, and I forgot to mention it.

Jay Carney, you have absolutely no credibility left . . . NONE . . . , ZIP . . . ZERO. You have become the world's most obvious, and oblivious "talking head". When you open your mouth, prerecorded Kool-Aid gushes forth like Niagara Falls!

It's a hard choice for Obama to make, 110 teachers keeping their jobs or golfing with tiger? Golfing with Tiger it is. Plan wisely!

Is Obama a great teacher or intimidator?? He has either taught or intimidated his department heads that are now a group of liars like himself. "Apple does not fall far from the tree!!!! Misinterpreted is BS. It was a bald face lie attempting to pressure Republicans to cancel the reductions in spending (not cuts) that were his idea. Obama should refer to tapes of his previous statements to remember what he said or did.
