VIDEO: First Read Minute: For whom the sequester tolls

NBC's Mark Murray breaks down the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll numbers that show the sequester fight has taken a toll on everyone, including the American public. The poll also shows President Obama's approval rating is down two points since last month, and the Republican party currently about as popular as Carnival Cruise Lines.

The Real Reason the Sequester Will Hit is that Some House Republicans Want It

I know it seems like Republicans think sequestration will be a bad thing, otherwise why are they blaming President Obama for it…

But in the lead up to its reality, there are way more Republicans than just Paul Ryan cheering it on. They can’t wait for sequester! They want it so badly they can taste it. They don’t care that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office warn it could push our economy back into recession.

Fox News hosts cited a widely criticized Bob Woodward column to falsely claim President Obama's proposal to avert looming government spending cuts -- known as sequestration -- "moved the goalposts" because it offsets some of the cuts with new revenue. In fact, the administration's proposal to avert the sequestration has always included a balanced deficit reduction plan that included additional revenues.

Beverly, regarding the Bob Woodward item.

Something quite interesting in going on in the media. You have the usual establishment pundits/journalists such as Woodward and David Brooks and Peggy Noonan, Friedman, Dowd, Fineman. Then you have the next generation - some of whom are following in the steps of Woodward and Brooks, et al. We all know who they are and they are irrelevant.

What we now have are journalists who are going after the media establishment and those are the journalists we have to pay attention to. We as a nation can't move forward until the inside the beltway crowd are challenged, something that has never happened to them before.

It's happening now as we speak. More change. Vital vital change.

did you happpen to watch Fox News after it passed??? Your failed VP candidate, Paul Ryan, was bragging about how pleased he was that he finally got what he was after since 2004...

How about the fact that more R's than D's in the House voted for it?

Or the fact that one of 2 Village Idiots - John McCain - said he is so soooorrrrryyyy that he voted for it :(.

It's kinda like the ObamaCare - Republicans were all for it in 1993 so they came up with "Health Equity and Access Reform Today Act of 1993," that included - OH MY GAWD - Subtitle F: Universal Coverage - which required each citizen or lawful permanent resident to be covered under a qualified health plan...

Not to mention RomneyCare...

And then Obama comes along and poof the Healthcare Reform became a dirty topic for the Republicans.

Same with the Sequester - first for it - now a dirty topic.

You people are amazing!

thetotas: I quite disagree. Ellison recognized what all must when they go on Hannity's show. Hannity is a bully, and the only way to control a bully is to bully back. Hannity was completely taken aback, especially when Ellison said he was immoral. Hannity IS immoral. Took Hannity off his game and Keith won the night.

I can't tell you the pride we take in Ellison, who is a true public servant, and a gentleman. But one cannot use manners with those unaware of what etiquette and the calling of their job requires.

Maybe you need to take a civics class before commenting. It takes both houses of Congress and the President to make spending bills into law. The Democrats have the WH and the control of the Senate, and make of 2/3s of the bill passing process, the Republicans only control the House which is 1/3d of the bill passing process. The House has/can write appropriations bills but without concurrence of the Senate, the bill can not be signed into law. If the Senate concurs with the House then it takes the Presidents signature to become law. So the blame is 2/3ds on the Democrats and only 1/3d on the Republicans. BTW, the Senate can and has written bills and ask for House concurrence.

I mentioned the Republican House should just write a bill giving the Departments to make the cuts required by the Sequestration Bill, however, I see that President Obama has already said he doesn't want that responsibility, what kind of leadership is that? BTW, I see the President is finally going to meet with Congressional leaders on Friday, Mar 1, to discuss the Sequester. My question "Where in the hell has he been for the past few months, besides running around the country playing the blame game?"

    #1.24 - Wed Feb 27, 2013 5:36 PM EST

Why Gee Ben, Obama must be a good leader because he continues to lead the republicans right to places they vowed to never go, and he leads them to do things they vowed they would never do. Ask Grover Norquist if Obama is a good leader, he will probably say no, but Obama lead him right out the door. Not to mention he leads in the polls, he lead the competition in the election, he leads all the time Ben.

Just a little behind where President Bush was at this point in his 2nd term. Plus President Bush wasn't pimping himself out to the highest bidder which even the MSM says is disgusting, and he didn't own a sequester. Just like the pied piper is how oblamo leads, right over the cliff!

        #1.27 - Thu Feb 28, 2013 9:27 AM EST

He does not own the sequester, the republicans will own that politically. The president has done a good job of taking the case to the American people, and making sure this is hung around the political necks of republicans in Congress, besides it is not within in scope of power, he can't legislate, that is the responsibility of Congress, anybody that passed an 8th grade test on US government knows that. They can blame him for not doing their jobs, but polling shows, and the especially the recent elections show the electorate is not buying it. I guess house republicans figure their numbers are so low, what is the difference, they can only drop about 12 more points and then they will have a 0% percent approval rating.

The "Crazy Conservative Clowns" are singing, dancing, and doing more political 'tricks' under their Teabegger Circus Big Top. The "Hoodlum's On The Hill" just loved to deny funding for parts of our nation that were ruined by Sandy. Now the GOP/Teabeggers may get their Sequester after all America. "Bonehead Boehner" stated that the Sequester is exactly what he wants. Little "Richie Rich Ryan" stated that the Sequester is great, and he wanted it implemented sooner. "Crazy Cantor" is dancing up a storm with rotten tea bags hanging off his ears. The President was "Economically Threated" to sign the GOP/Teabegger Sequester. If the President had not signed the GOP/Teabeggers would not have extended the Debt Ceiling. Now the GOP Teabeggers are now trying to blame the President. Again! So the GOP/Teabegger "House Of Hoodlum's" are celebrating in many of their quietrooms. The GOP/Teabeggers may have also have another victory in the US Supreme Court. The destruction of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Section 5 protects individuals before discrimination occurs. Section 5 also deals with redistricting which is being 'rigged' right now at the state level. It will be interesting to see what happens next America.

Speaker Boehner, during this year's first GOP inflicted crisis, said he would not negotiate with President Obama any more. It seems Boehner does grasp that he can't lead and is even a worse negotiator. Yesterday Boehner ranted about having passed two bills and won't do a third until the Senate gets off its "a##". He's Speaker of the House and doesn't even know the rules of Congress; doesn't know that the bills passed in 2012 were the 112th Congress and are now dead. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had to remind Boehner of the rules. Boehner should know because he was eviscerated by his own party, especially Gov Christie, for failing to pass the Hurricane Sandy relief bill before adjourning for Christmas which then forced the Senate to pass it again in 2013.

Speaker Boehner adjourned the House for a 10-day vacation knowing this next crisis loomed. There was no point in the Senate staying in session because without the House, nothing would be done. Democratic senators and representatives, however, did work on legislation. We know where the republicans were and it wasn't DC except when it came time for the Sunday talk shows.

President Obama can't wave a magic wand and un-do the sequester--the ball is in Congress's court. Obama has tried working with conservatives repeatedly and each time, the GOPers walk away. We learned yesterday, that GOPer Eric Cantor, talked Boehner out of the Grand Bargain in 2011 and opted for the resulting sequester because he figured the election would go the GOP's way.

Now, I suggest that Speaker Boehner get off his own "a##" and do the job he's paid to do. Democrat Chris Van Hollen has tried THREE TIMES to get the democratic House bill which negates the sequester and replaces it with responsible spending cuts and tax loophole closures BUT BOEHNER WILL NOT ALLOW an up or down vote. As Rep Van Hollen said, there are republicans who support the democratic bill. Whether or not there are the needed 218 votes is uncertain BUT at least Congress would be doing something; it might be that with amendments, legislation could be passed, we'd only know if Boehner allows it to be brought to the floor for debate, amendment and vote.

Just keep putting out the crappola, the free stuff will suddenly stop, and your taxes will go up too,if you have a job,and you'll wonder wtf,and we will have our laugh. If you wish to see who is the biggest d-head of all, look in the mirror.

Say It Ain't So: I agree. The Republicans are trying to inflict as much damage as possible on this country prior to the door hitting them in the "posterior". It is sickening to watch and totally un-American (and not Christian, either).

Another ridiculously absurd. assertion from upchuckb

No news here, just more boring squeeze chester b/s

              Taxed Enough Already!
