As the clock ticks down to the sequester, the State of our Union is -- mildly profane.
A round of political pottymouthing started this morning, when John Boehner told a closed-door meeting of Republicans – and then an open bank of microphones – that congressional action on a budget fix is jammed until “the Senate gets off their ass and begins to do something.”
The grammatically questionable demand from the House Speaker provided a welcome distraction for journalists weary of combing thesauruses for synonyms for “looming” and “across the board.”
But no sooner had news organizations decided how to handle the lawmaker’s anatomical illustration in their headlines than a response came from the primary, er, butt of Boehner’s jab.
“I was raised in a little town that had 13 brothels in it, so I'm used to some pretty salty language as you know," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recalled to reporters at the Capitol.
Twice quoting Boehner's invocation of the gluteus maximus, Reid helpfully pointed out that Boehner's chosen metaphor was "quite interesting."
"I think he should understand who is sitting on their posterior," he continued. "We're doing our best here to pass something. The speaker is doing nothing to try to pass anything over there."
The PG-13 language hasn't been limited to lawmakers on the Hill in recent days.
In a final press briefing, outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta heatedly directed his colleagues to find solutions rather than "sit here and bitch."
And Secretary of State John Kerry brought a set of H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks overseas, expressing bewilderment in Berlin over the legislative state of affairs back home.
"I know you sometimes scratch your heads - because I do it at home - and say what the hell are those guys doing or not doing as the case may be, and it's frustrating," he told embassy staff.
And President Barack Obama – who has generally left the strongest non-legislative language to his vice president – implied to shipyard workers in Virginia today that perhaps it's the budget cuts themselves that should be classified as dirty words.
"That's a pretty bad name, sequester," he said. "But the effects are even worse than the name."

Bwahaha! Me "frist"! Me "frist"!
[Bleep] the obstructionists!
You GO Bali Bob!
Poor Agent Orange, has a potty mouth! lol
Wonder if he kisses his wife with that mouth..?? ;o))
This title and the article made me smile! I think many of you are aware that I am not one to mince words, or to sugar coat, or to use @#$& when I really mean to say......F....Oh, alright, I won't do it this time! But, when it comes to a certain party, my all time favorite word that rolls right off my tongue in regards to that certain party, does begin with the letter F, and I don't mean Fabulous! For those with sensitive ears, it rhymes with duck! HA!
........and has you life changed any?
Eeeeeeewwwwwwwww!!!!!!
By the way - isn't "frist" a dirty word?? Oh well.
By the way - isn't "frist" a dirty word??
All depends on who's ''fristin'' who!
Isn't "frist" a dirty word?
Wouldn't have made much sense if I'd said Me "[Bleep]! Me [Bleep]!"
AlaskaGirl,
heeheehee
Selamat Malam Bob, long time, hope all is well. Soto Ayam malam, yum.
Chuck Hagel confirmed, lost of gnashing of teeth and hair pulling, 58-41, 3 broke ranks.
Boehner telling the senate to do what--was he sober?
Crow chow time baggers, you wanted it, now live with it, own all the wrath coming from constituents, because you Baggers won't close jet and yacht loop-holes. Mangy boogers.
@sky,
Hey, Apa kabar? Hope all is well with you!
Yeah, Boehner's definitely choking on the Teabag...
...and the result is that the teabag is choking up the entire works.
Please explain.
Bali - congrats on being first!
And, congratulatons to Chuck Hagel for - again - making the Republicans look like the fools they have become!
While everyone is having a good laugh, just remember, the NIH says these cuts will delay the development of cures for Alzheimer's, cancer and influenza. Its disrupting medical research - this is for real, folks.
Bali, we are very well thank you. Laki Laki lapar!
Salaam Hormat Parrot
Seeking,
You said it! lol
How is the snow down by you?
It's still coming down here to beat the band and it's that super heavy stuff, already have over 6" on the ground. Hope we we don't lose power!
@Seek,
Congratulations to Chuck Hagel
Yeah, after all the posturing and wrangling, Hagel gets confirmed. Even McCain admitted that the obstruction was all about Party loyalty.
What happened to that "Country First" business?
Spoken like a true statesman. The Weepers golf/drinking game must have been interrupted.....He's mad!...Literally mad!
Whatever the TeaPeople passed in the 112th Congress doesn't count.....but he throws that out and forgets this is a new Congress, he has to start over.
The Weeper, and his disfunctional House, are shirking their Constitutional responsibility.
@ Mark: Apparently corporations that own jets get a special tax break for the depreciation on their jets. That is one of the loopholes Obama has been talking about. I would imagine the yacht deal is something similar in nature, and/or a tax break for registering a yacht in another country, maybe? Not versed on that one as much. I keep my yacht in my front yard! LOL
I can describe Speaker Boehner in three words, none of them remotely profane:
Worst Speaker Ever!
Speaking of people getting off their asses, how many days has congress been in recess in 2013 again?
Something like a total of 20 days? Seems like every time I turn on the t.v. it's being announced that Congress has adjourned for a week, for two weeks, they'll be back in next week after putting in 3 days. Sickening.
Yes, Al, worst speaker ever is damned right! Worst Congress ever!
AlaskaGirl,
You have a land yacht! Perfect for Alaska.
I am aware of the details of the referenced "loop-holes." I have pontificated on this subject in the past, it is near and dear to me. Aviation is a ferociously volatile industry. A tax break in the form of a credit on depreciation encourages more jets to be sold and operated, providing benefits (jobs, etc) far in excess of the meager amount of lost tax revenue. There are a lot of jobs tied up with jets - operation, support, manufacturing, and all the ancillary functions like airports, hotels, restaurants, etc.
Here's my problem with all this. I just don't know what to believe as we are being bombarded with a barrage of hyperbole, platitudes, self-serving rhetoric, incomprehensible profundities, and a tirade of vitriol from all sides. The needle of my trusty Bull@!$%#-o-Meter has hit the stops so many times I have given up trying to repair it.
I did not expect an answer for my post #1.10, I was trying to make a point. Each side has its cache of meaningless catch phrases and talking points. I think part of getting over this ugly divisiveness is more critical thinking and questioning. Before I use this or that term, phrase, or whatever, what does it really mean and is it valid? Can I support it factually and logically if questioned? Or am I just throwing it ot there to get a rise or worse?
Our people in Washington are certainly not setting a good example in this respect.
You never fail to impress me, Mark. I really do wish there were more Republicans like you posting here. I should have known better than to try and explain a loophole, especially an aviation loophole, when I do remember you explaining(alot) on the subject of aviation. I do my best to really pay attention at what both sides say and then try to form an opinion out of both sides and the points that each make. Sometimes I am still left scratching my head!
I definitely agree with you about our people in Washington not setting a good example for the rest in this country. I can be just as guilty as the next when it comes to wise ass remarks or not fully understanding something and just throwing out words to piss off a right wing extremist. You always make me stop and ponder, so thank you for that.
P.S. My "yacht" is actually my wave runner! HA!
Thanks, AlaskaGirl, you are too kind. I do my best - and a lot of head scratching!
Fun yacht!
"We're doing our best here to pass something. The speaker is doing nothing to try to pass anything over there." Harry Reid
Let's see now - Boehner has passed a Budget in each of the last 2 years.
Boehner has passed two bills to deal with the 'Sequester'.
Reid has not passed a Budget in over 4 years.
Reid has not passed ANYTHING to address the 'Sequester'.
If that's 'the best' you have to offer Harry, perhaps it's time to step aside and let someone ELSE try.
By the way - Somehow I have a hard time believing that a 2% cut in spending will result in "the end of the World as we know it". Actually, that's only a cut in the 'baseline' INCREASE in spending - Actual spending is still going to INCREASE vs 2012, even with the sequester cuts.
Obama deserves the Best Actor' award for his role in "The Sky is Falling".
Practice what you preach, idiot. You've been sitting on this for months then decided to cut and run. What a poor excuse of a leader. Time for a permanent vacation Johnny boy. 2014 can't get here fast enough.
What, no whining yet about Vice President Biden at the signing of the Affordable Care Act?
That was hilarious! Go, JOE!
Let the cuts happen!
"Go f*** yourself!" - Speaker Boehner to Senator Reid, 12/28/2012
Didn't the "Dick" say the same thing to Harry on the Senate floor?
yes indeedy!
Classy bunch, those Republicans. Feisty---I think Cheney said that to Leahy and then later said he had no regrets.
If the cuts happen maybe if it hurts enough people maybe just maybe they will get off there asses and vote out these stupid republicans.
I get what you're saying, but I totally disagree with you, Capt. I don't think people losing their jobs, being completely vulnerable is the way. There is enough about the GOP out there to help people decide to vote them out. This sequester was never supposed to happen. It was meant as a means to get both sides working together to avoid these drastic across the board cuts. Yes, we do need to make cuts, but these are too deep, too fast for an already fragile economy that many economists say is poised to take off in a positive direction. Sequester is really the last thing we need right now.
Capt.: My knee-jerk reaction to your statement is 'right on'. I will add on to what Alaskagirl explained. These cut could cause job loss now, but with the next election down the road the blame may be unjustly shifted to the President.
I think that is what is most upsetting to me, Capt.---that real people will have real hardships from the sequester and Congress just doesn't seem to care. It is like a chess game to them. They are totally ignoring the real harm that will befall people who have to take pay cuts or lose their jobs.
I cannot stomach the idea that poor senior citizens will be skipping meals so that they can still pay for some of their prescriptions. I cannot stomach poor children going hungry because their single parent household just got layed off. I am tearing up right now as I type this. I don't want to be taken for a bleeding heart liberal as I know we need to make cuts, we do need to harness in some of the spending, but just slashing away is the wrong way to go. There are more sensible and responsible ways to do it. It bothers me that some can say 'yeah, do it, let sequestration go through'. It makes me wonder is it because they will not be affected by it, financially? If not, good for them, but there are too many people in this country who are still struggling back, making progress, just got back to work, and now many may lose those jobs and be back to square one? It's just not right.
This from the man who is leading the House Republicans as they dig in their heels and refuse to budge. Can you spell H Y P C R I C Y?
How many days off have you had this year, Mr. Speaker?
What did Congress, led as much by Speaker Boehner as by Leader Reid accomplish over the last 2 years? Very little.
There's an old saying, Mr. Speaker, that goes "it takes two to tango" and as you dance around the floor looking silly you make the whole country look silly and angry at you. President Obama has a few more spaces on his dance card. Why not fill them and tango into the night?
Would some please put a bigger sock in Boneheads mouth; he is really annoying!
Boehner can't control his herd of flea bitten cats, things are going to get uglier still by the time Friday rolls around.
Am hunkered down to survive coming GOP induced Tsunami.
Going to donate some $$ to local Meals on Wheels--due for meat cleaver cuts--so that no Shut-in goes hungry.
Fly on the wall time, wait until Koch/Adelson start poking the Elephant with a sharp stick because they are loosing $$, the middle class economic engine doesn't have it to spend in casinos or for Vanity Fair napkins.
Oops forgot the O.
fail
House passed two bills, senate refuse to let them go to a vote. Yes the statement is acurate. We deferred sequester twice, we raised the debt ceiling, we increased taxes on the wealthy. And still Obama demands more of our money and more debt, and still no budget. These are not the best cuts, but it is clear Obama intends to do nothing after all of these efforts to by the GOP to help him buy time to make better cuts. He does not deserve his position.
Obama needs to add to the Statue of Liberty: give me the money!
Barry is more and more sounding like a petulant child, crying always when he can't play with the big boys and girls. If he can't change the sequester, his own plan, will he pick up his toys and go home?
I find it difficult to understand how we all can reduce our checkbooks when times get hard, but government can't understand how to do something similar.
The most entertaining show in recent political history: watch a feed of the State of the Union Address that is constantly focused on John Boehner's sourface expressions. I actually feel a little sorry for the guy. All he wants to do is play golf and schmooze. It's not his fault he got saddled with the Tea Party - aka "the worst Congress in history".
Boehner is such a hypocrite. He and his leadership cronies are the reason nothing can get done. The Senate Republicans and Democrats have learned how to work together and create legislation. In the last Congressional session, the Senate was able to pass bills to address Agricultural issues and Postal Reform as examples. These bills never saw the light of day in the House because the Republican leadership (Boehner, Cantor, Issa, Ross, Ryan, Paul, and others) couldn't muster enough support from their own party to pass their forms of these bills. Theses"leaders" continue place their own personal beliefs in front of the people they are supposed to serve. In his opening statement to House freshman this year, he told them its not about representing their constituents but about providing leadership to their (Tea Party?) way of governing. These "leaders" would rather risk everyone else's jobs and income, than doing their own jobs. Unfortunately, Boehner is insuring the mainstream conservatives will continue to lose positions and ensuring Democratic control.
Wrong there fishbreath. They were elected by US. We are the occupants of that "flyover" land. We get to vote also.
This obese group of politicians/lobbyists have an extreme spending addiction, that will have a large negative impact for many years to come if we survive it. It also seems as though a large portion of public educated citizens have completely fallen into this belief of entitlements is a great way to live. I wish more had an inclination to keep thier birth given freedoms and hard earned money.
Yes Lord knows we need to spend more money this year than we did last year? Libtard economics.
The republican party is numb as to what is going on in there own country. There is no way they will survive if they keep doing what there doing, not that I care for I don't becasue I'm a true liberal. I don't like that nothing is getting done becasue of this very inept party, I would hope they just step aside for a few years until they can find less idiots to run than what they have been putting forth the last four years.
The Republican Party is — — _— — just fill in your favorite demeaning adj. Obama an his Chicago gang affiliates have completely out smarted, out talked, out maneuvered, and have the GOP in a frazzle. There is no leader ship in the GOP,,, The speaker is a lame duck at best,, one thing for sure he has no street smarts...ON the other hand if there was a leader in the White House it wouldn't matter,, BUT there is not ,,, Obama is a street wise, hip, smooth talker, could be a elmer gantry if he was preaching the word of Christ,, but he's not,,, Obama can stir the sh*t, but he can't get rid of it,,, with the GOP all beat down,,, and with bama on campaign status 24/7 all we have is a destructive force, that will not solve any thing except further extend their own agendas and it's not good for America or Americans,,,
