The Senate voted to confirm former Sen. Chuck Hagel as President Barack Obama's next secretary of defense following weeks of dogged opposition by Republican senators to their erstwhile colleague.
The Senate voted 58 to 41 to formally confirm Hagel, on the heels of a procedural vote earlier in the day that cleared the way for Tuesday afternoon's final vote.
That earlier vote dispensed with a filibuster that Senate Republicans had waged for a week and a half against Hagel, whose confirmation was delayed by Republicans past the President's Day recess in order to allow for more time to dig into the former Nebraska senator's background.
A number of Republican detractors — including Sens. John McCain, Ariz., Lindsey Graham, S.C. and Kelly Ayotte, N.H. — reversed their votes on Monday in order to allow the Hagel nomination to move forward.
The Senate voted 71 to 27 to move forward with Hagel's nomination, clearing the 60-vote threshold needed to end the GOP filibuster. A handful of the Republicans who allowed Hagel's nomination to come to a final vote ultimately voted against confirmation.
In the end, Obama was able to win confirmation for Hagel, his choice to succeed outgoing Secretary Leon Panetta at the Pentagon. But not before Republicans were able to drag out the confirmation fight and, in the process, ding Hagel, their onetime GOP Senate colleague from the Cornhusker State.
Republicans had fought strenuously to defeat Hagel, accusing him at points of harboring hostilities toward Israel, and sympathies for the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Tied into Hagel's nomination as well have been Republicans' long-running effort to ding Obama and his administration over their handling of the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

"What has their filibuster gained my Republican colleagues?" Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., asked on the Senate floor. "Twelve days later, Senator Hagel's exemplary record of service to his country remains untarnished."
Reid added: "Senate Republicans have delayed for the better part of two weeks for one reason and one reason only: partisanship."
Hagel didn't necessarily help his cause during a combative confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Republicans aggressively questioned Hagel on a variety of matters during the Jan. 31 hearing.
Even still, Democrats held firm in their backing for the former Nebraska senator, helping to move his nomination forward. Republicans, though, managed to buy themselves more time — they said, to more fully investigate Hagel's background — by waging a filibuster against the nomination on Feb. 14.
Democrats angrily protested the delay, especially as current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta planned to leave the job, as dangerous and unprecedented. Republican opponents of Hagel, though, said at that time that they would drop their objections to holding a confirmation vote after last week's recess.

I'm glad he was confirmed, but having the other party strenuously fight a nomination isn't exactly unusual. Democrats did it for some Bush nominees, and now Republicans are doing it for some Obama nominees...it's the way our political process works.

Who is it within your "news" corporations that has decided that you are NEVER to point out that, in reality, a FAKE filibuster tactic is what is being employed by the 41 Senator MINORITY to stop a vote from taking place, perhaps INDEFINITELY, meaning more often than not, NEVER. A REAL filibuster has no such power; they will always, eventually, come to an end, and then allow, after 30 hours of debate, a simple up or down majority vote to take place. The public, rightly, respects the real filibuster. Most of them are totally unaware that the fake filibuster even exists, and you fake journalists have been contributing to that ignorance for 30 years. Are you folks really pleased with this nomination? Party affiliation aside, this guy looked like a confused old man and appeared startled by some of the most basic questions. I've watched these types of hearings for a long time and don't recall a weaker performance. Does competence matter to you people or is your guy winning the only thing you focus on?

I think the Hagel approval was held up to coincide with the announcement today that Several prominent Republicans signed a legal brief in support of same-sex marriage. Including former President Bush... Its "Battle of the Bombshells" over the hearts and minds of the party!! Kinda looks like it sorta worked... The legal brief has been second-hand news pretty much... The military is the entity that currently adds by far the most to the federal deficit, and spending cuts must come for the military also to get the deficit under control, not just to social programs that will hurt most citizens.
Apparently Senate Democrats can vote and pass something if they wanted to. So why do we have so much of a problem with the Sequester? This is ridiculous.

I said I voted for Obama and Rush told me that people who voted for him get “free stuff” such as food stamps. They said it didn’t work that way.

I bought a new car. The salesman was explaining the paper work and we came to the sales tax. The sales tax was almost $2,200.00. I told the guy that Sean Hannity said people who voted for President Obama don’t pay taxes and since I voted for him, I was exempt for the sales tax. He said I still have to pay the sales tax.
I got my property tax bill form the county recorder the other day. I called him and informed him that Glen Beck said people who voted for President Obama didn’t pay taxes and that since I voted for Obama; I shouldn’t have to pay property taxes. He said either pay the tax or they would put a lien on my house.
I called my accountant. I told him that a bunch of people on Fox News reported that people who voted for President Obama don’t pay any taxes. I assured him I did vote for President Obama and then asked him to handle all the paper work to arrange for a complete refund of all the federal and state taxes withheld form my paychecks since President Obama took office in 2009. He asked me what I was smoking!!

Brennan has stated that he would like to see the Drone program switched from the CIA to the DoD, which really does make sense. If it were switched, there would be more oversight and a bit more transparency to a highly classified program. I would have to hear more about this and do more research, but at face value, I would agree with Mr. Brennan and others who have stated the same. I am for the Drone program, but I think there is the possibility that the CIA may have overstepped their bounds in some instances, but who can say for sure since it is for the most part a very secretive program. At least if it were within the DoD, there would be an oversight committee and more transparency to Congress and the American people.

Surprisingly, as a moderate Democrat, I can understand why Republican Senators may have bulked at forwarding Hagel's name to the Senate floor. It's been a difficult year for Republicans with their somewhat diminished power and attempting to wage a battle on principles that may now be in the minority. It's human nature to want to resist change, especially based on values and principles. A two week delay in Congress actually isn't that traumatic and in case of Congress it's a relatively brief moment in the Congressional process. I can respect the Republicans efforts and I also appreciate those moderate Republicans of permitting the President's nominee to eventually get an up or down vote - that is a sign of real statesmanship.
The real problem Republicans had with Chuck Hagel is President Obama nominated him. Had Romney won and nominated him, he would have been confirmed weeks age.
And had Romney had nominated him the press would have fully vetted him like they should have, and most likely he wouldn't have gotten the confirmation.
I can also understand the republican position of hatred for president Obama. I presented as did the defendants a statement reporting harassment. Since everyone and his mother will attack any DOD cuts as harmful to national security (take the disaster of the FX 35 program as an example), I suggest that we can easily cut DOD spending that have nothing at all to do with keeping us safe. Examples? At Mrs. Obama's appearance at the Oscars Sunday night, in the background were "military social aides." I have no idea what a military social aide does, but dressed in their military formal clothes I doubt they did much of anything to protect us from Al Qaida. How about all the marketing and advertising the military does. Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Golden Knights, among others. Why do we need Army, Navy, and Air Force bands, and orchestras,and jazz combos? Do we really need officers' clubs on just about every military installation on the planet? Does the Navy really need to spend untold dollars on TV advertising telling us they are a "force for good" around the world? How about "an Army of One"?
None of these cuts will even come close to covering the cost overruns on one unnecessary weapons system, but Everett Dirksen said it best: "a billion here, a billion there; pretty soon it adds up to real money."
Yes, the F-35 program is a joke. The whole thing. And Lockheed engineers need to shipped over to China or North Korea to develop inferior weapons systems.

I like the part where this whole thing was about the neoclown butt hurt at being considered AIPAC shills and after all of it nothing changed. Hagel for his part has never truly capitulated or told anyone that anything about his views had changed. He just changed "Jews" to "Israelis". LOL.
Frankly I'm sick of the backseat Americans have taken in deference to Israel as well as the hypocrisy of both with regard to human rights violations, war crimes, and the development/possession of nukes. My only problem with Hagel is that he didn't say what he said more directly, more often, and always through a live concert-level sound system. Were I on the committee to confirm Secretaries of Defense? Anyone who didn't tell me he was a US Senator and not an Israeli senator would get declined on the spot. And right after that session, I would be calling another session to dump every one of my colleagues who didn't have to be physically restrained after being called a shill for a foreign country even as a joke, and not because it was embarrassing. Because it literally turned their stomachs.
And this has nothing to do with being some anti-semite, which apparently means "someone who treats Israel as it teaches others to treat it, no better and no worse". It has to do with the fact that I will no longer support anybody in this government that expects Americans to die so some foreign country can make it clear to its neighbors that it is better than they are as a race.
This is the best nomination Obama has submitted and I am liking a lot of what I'm seeing out of him now. The part where the president will put a childish counterproductive agenda-driven Congress on Front St. where the people can see it. But I still remain skeptical about whether or not he dances to his own strings when I consider the black hat/white hat game that got us the Patriot Act and the NDAA back to back out of what supposedly are two political factions with diametrically opposed philosophies. It makes matters worse when I find out that it was the administration itself that refused to concede the right to invoke the NDAA when killing citizens. And then there are the drones. Which of course are "only the stuff of conspiracy theorists and sci fi movies". Oh, and US citizens on days that end in 'y'. That's right.
Now if Israel actually gets smacked down on those settlements by this admin in front of everyone? If we do not stand in the UN's way with an automatic veto on any attempt to make Israel accountable for its actions? If this admin does anything to make it clear that we will no longer function as Israel's blank check to wiping its butt with the NPT? I will have to reconsider my belief that Obama is just the puppet that can please the audience "for the moment".

Wait until next Tuesday evening ~ when Hagel is confirmed with an 82 to 16 vote. That'll make the little GOPer lemmings' eye water. They 'bet their money on a bob-tailed fag' ~ ~ ~ and lost again. They will ultimately lose on the sequester (not immediately, but within 30 days of its implementing), they will lose on the Continuing Resolution fight, and later on the yet-to-come-around-again debt ceiling. Seeing they can't prevail, Tea Party proponents will run their own candidates in the primaries. Many newbcies will win and Democrats wil mount a massive voter turnout in the general election, harvesting the seats in November 2014. But maybe the GOP can put on a new coat of paint, offer a more congenial dialogue, and put fresh faces in the mix to avoid all of this. Nope ~ the new faces hold the same values and therein lies the rub for GOPers.
