Have a great weekend. Folks (my fellow Ribs (libs for a pig).
Well it's coming up on that time of the week. I don't know about you'll folks but I'm about wore out. But as usual we've all had a good time. Giggled a little at each other. Tweaked each other a mite. Had to rub on a bruise or two. Don't look like no permanent harm has befallen anybody. So before I slide on out the door down to the Dew Drop Inn to make sure the Juke Box has gotten refilled with all the latest requests and we've got that extra bartender to make sure that everybody gets their favorites just right for NASCARS "Super Bowl Weekend" and this year's Oscars celebration I want to pass on a thought about some of the Everyday Hero's that we are going to honor down at the Inn .
After helping them through tragedy, Connecticut troopers stay close with Newtown families
HARTFORD, Conn. — As the family of slain Sandy Hook school psychologist Mary Sherlach mourned her death, Trooper Orlando "Lonny" Mo was the one who brought back her car and personal belongings. He escorted her husband and daughters to a meeting with the president, he answered the door at the family's house, and at the funeral he embraced her husband, Bill Sherlach, who told Mo he was like a brother.
Mo's detail with the family ended on the day of the funeral service, but only officially. Like many of his fellow troopers tasked with aiding the families of the Newtown massacre victims, he has stayed in close contact with those he helped through some of their darkest days.
In a first-of-its-kind program, Connecticut State Police assigned troopers and some local officers to each victim's family following the Dec. 14 massacre of 20 first-graders and six women. There was no blueprint for it. As the families were plunged into grief and the small town became clogged with media satellite trucks, the troopers were told to provide whatever the families needed.
The troopers spent long hours at the families' homes, supporting logistics for out-of-town relatives coming for funerals and providing updates in the case. At least one officer went out in his cruiser to buy milk for children who wanted cereal.
For several parents, the troopers' presence was a tremendous comfort.

Thank you Trooper Lonny Mo and many other of your First Responder Brethren for simply being the kind of person that we should all aspire to be.
Please come and occupy a favored place in the Heart of all Denizens of the Dew Drop Inn. In the same way money nor gold could ever buy what you are doing for these folks none of you'lls money will be good at the Dew Drop Inn or for a night's stay in the Comeback Inn in perpetuity. The Honor of your presence is quite enough.
As always my thanks and appreciation to our hosts for their time, giving me a little place to stand, a subject to comment on, a forum to put it in, and their indulgence when I don't quite get it right or get a little off subject. I purely do appreciate it. Hope you'll have a fine weekend and good fun among folks that you know and love. To my fellow participants keep well, keep safe, and keep the faith. We'll make it. See you'll next week
Now IR---we're supposed to be celebrating TGIF and the big weekend plans and instead I'm wiping tears away! Thanks so much for sharing this story. One thing we DON'T know about these troopers---are they Democrats? Republicans? We don't know and we don't care---they are wonderful Americans caring for their neighbors.
Woo Hoo IR was frist
Breaking News …
Friday, February 22, 4:55 PM
Credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service has downgraded Britain's government bond rating one notch from the top AAA to AA1, citing weaknesses in the economy's medium-term outlook.
The British government is in the midst of a program of spending cuts designed to reduce the nation's hefty deficit, but a flat-lining economy has led it to downgrade its own estimates of future growth.

Steeler Didn't mean to make you cry. Sometimes at the end of a week where so many of the Yahoo Brethern have been screechin' and squalling and saying nasty things I need to remind myself that this is still America and what makes it great is folks like Lonny and his brethern.
IR, thanks for sharing the great story that is, humanity!!
Floyd,
Thank you for sharing & reminding us there is much more to life than partisan politics...
IR, as always, a great way to end the week. Thanks for sharing that story.
Everyday heroes just doing their best to help when those families' and Newtown's world turned upside down. Cheers to Lonny Mo, and the other troopers who did what needed doing when all our hearts were broken.
SF, well said. It would seem our legislators could learn a lesson, put aside differences and just do what is right because the country needs them to do so.
Talkto, glad to see that you decided not to stay away. We may not always agree but that's the idea of a political debate site.
Thank you for sharing IR. Kinda puts things into perspective at the end of the day that we should be grateful for friends, family, and those that put the protection of others lives before their own.
IR thank you for your post. I had no idea this had happened. It goes to show that, even during a time when the unthinkable happens, good shines through for everyone to see. May we all strive to do just as much for someone who needs us.
IR--my thanks as well. I had no idea about this, and it is a powerful reminder that we are all in this together! The brownies are in the oven, baking nicely so they can be shared at the DDI tonight. Since I am on the West Coast, I get there a bit later than others, but still enjoy hanging out, listening to music, and sharing a toast with you all! Happy weekend to all!
Shocker!! The only way to stop a bad "whackjob" with a gun is a good "whackjob" with a gun. Or something to that effect.
IR, "red". et.al- sure wish I was one o' them lazy, good for nothing, free-loading libs I keep hearing about on the 'liberal media' that doesn't have a job so I could jump in on these posts more often. Sorry- on a day like this one, I gots to work 10 hours, then go home and move snow from the last storm.
But hey, life's good. You all remind me of that daily. Keep it up, Y'all.
Not sure what's on the beat-box at the Inn, but I'm sure there will be plenty of requests, including some classics like Roy Orbison, Patsy, Jim Ed Brown and many, many others. Slim Whitman? Maybe not so much. Linda Ronsteadt (and the Stone Ponies)- oh, hell yeah.
You kids play nice, now- hear? And while you're at it, revel in the blessings bestowed upon this, our great nation, including one Barack HUSSEIN Obama.
The week ahead of the apocalypses, a week ahead of the end of the world according to Democrats, because sequestration reduce spending in a 2% of the federal budget, this is so silly. Actually we need to cut more, the government is too big, and by the way, Obama use as a background to promote Apocalypses Now Police and First Responders that actually get paid for the local and state government not the Federal , nice try only good for the low information voters.
For the Oscar, I pick Zero Dark Thirty , but is not going to win, liberals in Hollywood won't pick a movie that is not politically bias in favor of their ideology. Harsh interrogations works and this movie is not bias in the way they show the facts. One more night when none hypocrites environmentalist will come in a hybrid car or flying to Hollywood in a commercial jet . Oscar Winner Al Gore only fly his personal jet, like many of his kind.
oskar,
It is a 15% cut not a 2% cut
1- The cuts only apply to 36% of the budget
2- The cuts are spread over 6 months, not a year
The mind-bending Teapublican meltdown continues!
LIES:
The president has a plan! It's been available for a long time. Just Google. You will immediately see several links at the top of the page to the White House website where anyone can print off the president's plan to avoid the sequester.
The truth is the Teapublicans don't want to accept the president's balanced plan, so they go about the country on FAUX Noise and other rightwing propaganda outlets demanding to have a plan. They think if they act like there isn't a plan, then it becomes fact. Please get your news from a source other than FAUX Nose.
BREAKING NEWS: The sequester was originally Boehner's idea. He was caught in the lie when his Powerpoint was uncovered -- his presentation to Teapublicans to convince them that the sequester would be a great idea.
Did some Dems also agree to the sequester, and then did the president sign it? Yes, but it was NOT the president who came up with the lame idea or who preferred it over a balanced, more commonsense approach.
WARNING! The Teapublicans may have gone on vacation upon deciding to let the sequester go into effect. Why? First, as they all acknowledge, it would hurt the economy and cause more jobs to be lost. This is what they have wanted ever since President Obama was elected.
But the bigger goal is to then present legislation to reinstate as much of the defense spending (and only defense spending) as possible, and when the Dems refuse to support it, they can claim the Dems are soft of defense.
The even bigger goal is to impose Tyranny of the Minority (wow, just wow), and most of all to cause the citizens of this great nation to lose faith in our government. These Teapublicans are the traitors who are trying to overthrow the US government (I'm talking to you Ted "McCarthy" Cruz). These Teapublicans are anti-everything, and can't name one single positive thing that they are FOR.
The 2014 mid-term elections are approaching faster than they know... Throw the Teapublican traitors out!
Tony, the fallacious argumentation/lack of logic is the number one problem with the rightwing -- Along the inability to recognize a credible source (because mainstream media is evil) to apply critical thinking (because science is bad), and zero ability to admit when they are wrong.
It was refreshing to hear this very problem being discussed this week on one of the MSNBC news programs (forget which one now). Living in the evidence-based world that Hillary spoke about is #1 in order for the GOP to rebuild itself.
But at the minimum DO NO HARM, most immediately in regard to sequestration.

What were you saying about low information voters?
5 Pinocchio's for this low information voter
Journalism icon Bob Woodward wrote in a new Washington Post op-ed first that the sequester was the “brain child” of the White House, calling out President Barack Obama for saying it was created by Congress.
“My extensive reporting for my book ‘The Price of Politics’ shows that the automatic spending cuts were initiated by the White House and were the brainchild of [Jack Lew, then-budget director during the negotiations] and White House congressional relations chief Rob Nabors — probably the foremost experts on budget issues in the senior ranks of the federal government,” Woodward wrote on a piece posted on Friday night

Feisty----love the nominees! The race for Best Actress in a comedy is just as compelling:
Ann Romney in "Marie Antoinette--Let Them Eat Cake"
Sarah Palin in "Mama Grizzly Unchained"
Michele Bachmann in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
I heard that the Oscar presenters will all receive "swag bags" with a value of $46,000! Ours at the DDI will be equally impressive, I'm sure. In that vein, the first round of Dom Perignon is on me!
Wow nice prepared list there Feisty. Kudos for the preparedness to comment.

1/2 oz triple sec
1/2 oz sloe gin

Sounds delish!
*cheers*

Dick Cheney "The Creature From the Black Lagoon"
Sarah Palin "Psycho"
Let the party begin!!!
LMAO Ames!
Can you picture little Paulie getting manscaped? ;o)))))))
Alaska Girl, shouldn't that be served in an ice-filled coffin!! Speaking of Red cocktails, after gulping the Red Death, I would like to suggest following up with an Oscar Cocktail. In honor of Bachmann, use a wire hangar to skewer those garnishments.
Oscar Cocktail recipe
1 oz gin
1 oz vodka
3/4 oz cherry brandy
1 dash grenadine syrup
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz Hi-C® orange soda
Add ingredients to a snifter filled with ice. Garnish with an orange wedge and a stemmed cherry.

At the risk of life and limb … some burlesque, the ever ‘enchanting’ Miss Dirty Martini.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xamLn2VsQT0
I forgot to mention, Alaska Girl---dessert tonight at the Dew Drop Inn is in your honor: Baked Alaska!
We need a little music---in honor of the GOP being afraid of being "jilted" by President Obama, how about "Love Potion #9" so they can vote for immigration reform.
Feisty, great list!!! It's got to be John McCain, he's been playing the role of "Grumpy Old Men" for the last four years.
Amy, more good ones.
Although I'm thinking Ted Cruz for "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest"
Alaska Gal has been baked since her frist day here.
How about one or two of these?
The Patrón Gold Cosmopolitan
1 1/2 oz. Patrón Silver Tequila
1/2 oz. Patrón Citrónge Orange Liqueur
2 oz. Organic Blackberry Juice
1 oz. Fresh Orange Juice
Fresh Blackberry Garnish
10 Carat Gold Rim
Awww! Thank you darling! *cheers*
Yay! Thanks, Steeler!
I nominate Marco Rubio for the razzy award in "El Presidente" Ole!
BCWC, I'm getting baked as we speak!
OMH! I'm loving the drinks! So needed. RedDev .... the wire hangar line was priceless. Loving the "nominees" lists as well. You are all so creative and wickedly funny!
Amy, don't forget Sarah's "Psycho" co-star, Joe Walsh. It begs the question, who's your mama now, dead-beat daddy??
I am calling my drink order in from my sick bed.
Bartender,
what is your best Hot Toddy?
Please make it in a to go container.
Enjoy the party my friends, I will listen from afar.
Love the various lists of nominations, and I am sure M. Bachmannn will arrive in his finest duds for the award show.
Okay, I just cannot help myself! I must propose another toast to the entire Republican party, as they are today and in the future if they don't get their act(no pun intended!) together:
Absolut Train Wreck
1/2 oz Absolut® vodka
1/2 oz Absolut® Kurant vodka
1/2 oz Absolut® Citron vodka
1 1/2 oz cranberry juice
Add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, pour into a cup, and serve.
Nominations? All those Dem gals in the Senate for Steel Magnolias.
SF, I missed your nominees, you're right; Bachmann for "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest".
For you NorthStar! Feel better!
Whiskey Hot Toddy
1 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
1/4 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz sugar syrup
1 slice lemon
1 clove
4 ozhot water
Heat in a heat-resistant glass, and fill with hot water. Add a lemon slice speared with a clove, and serve.
I also nominate Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh, donning their best drag, for their co-starring roles in "Whatever Happened to the GOP-Baby Jane".
I nominate the Koch Brothers for their performance in "Trading Places".
alaska Girl,
Just got your Hot Toddy, one or two of these should clear my head.
thanks!!!
GF - you are on a ROLL!
If I drink all of the concoctions listed, I want an award for One Threw Up Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Feisty: You came prepared with nominees, I come prepared with alcohol! I love Fridays on TWA!!!
You are very welcome, Northstar! Let me know if you would prefer a toddy with something besides the whiskey. I saw some with brandy if you like brandy!
Feisty - DO NO DO THAT! Trying to work and now have to clean my monitor after
"The Waterboy" nomination! It's embarrassing to try to explain to my co-workers!
Make mine a double tonight. Been a rough week!
Wayne LaPierre in his role as lead zombie in "Night of the Living Dead"
Hagel and Kerry for their roles in "West Wing - The Movie"
I know, it's not funny but in honor of our President fighting for what is right and deciding that he wasn't putting up with the nonsense from the GOPers anymore: Barack Obama for "The American President".
Have a great weekend everyone!
TalktotheHand, I have noticed the change you've made both in how you address someone and your comments; it's nice. Have a good one.
Too much fun, here!!
I think personally I'm going to be a dead beat tonight, forecast says freezing drizzle, and then snow, hoe hum, another Michigan winter, made worse by a G.O.P. governor. Wants to raise taxes on gas, and add to our car registrations. Typical G.O.P. everything for the rich, nothing for the workers that made them rich.
Make mine a strait up Northern Lights and a bowl of my favorite medicine. A little Gwen Ifill, will fill the bill and then its off to a long winters nap. Tomorrow is another day.
Ted Cruz - "Cool Hand Puke"
John McCain - "Liar Liar"
Lindsey Graham - "Who's Got The Action"
John Boehner - "People Will Talk"
Oh brother - these stink!
Alaska Girl,
Toddy with whiskey is mighty fine.
I do not drink brandy. It always reminds me of Christian Brothers.
Old movie reference:
President Obama - "The Champ"
President Obama - Tiger Woods groupie
VP Biden - Jed Clampett
JK1963 - You really are a sad individual. Your post doesn't even make sense but go ahead - I'm sure it makes you feel like a big man! Sheish!
Who knew? "Gingrich: Republicans Will Oppose Any Immigration Plan Backed By Obama Because They Hate Obama"
from think progress.
The GOP delivers more shots to their own posterior, then bullets bought by homeland security. Oh yeah, the expansion of government by George W. Bush the cost that congress has to maintain.
Seeking...
You never make sense...but that is nothing new...
Hey, JK, can I buy you a ''drink"? Anything you please. It's on me!
Hey, john, pass the bowl! :)
Thanks Alaska... Just an iced cold beer in a frosted mug works for me...
Coming right up! Any particular brand? We do some great Alaskan ales here! The winter ale is quite tasty. Or, are you a Corona kinda guy? Maybe a bud man?
Actually Coors Light works well, although some local ales are usually tasty as well!
Haven't actually had a cold one in a while...ever since the band I was in went its separate ways back in October, I've actually not had a beer...LOL!
How about Rand Paul for Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Bobby Jindal for The Exorcist
Chris Christie for Big
John Boehner for Dances with Wolves
Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump for The Tortoise and the Hare
Ha Fiesty, this is fun.
Enjoy Mr. Grump! ☺
I'm thinking of Lindsey Graham for "The Birdcage"...
Coors Light it is! Let me know when you need a re-fill! The juke box is usually going, so let us know if there is a song you would like and I imagine someone will find it for you on Youtube!
Cheers!
Nice! Forrest!
Oh, Feisty! You are bad! I was thinking Ms. Lindsey for "Broke Back Mountain" but he really can't hold a candle to the late, great and truly beautiful Heath Ledger, nor the deliciousness that is Jake Gylenhall. Maybe a supporting role.
Just don't pull up my ex-band's video from YouTube!!!
And thank you for the hopitality!! Have an enjoyable weekend!
K. That might be an inside joke, but I would have no idea who your ex-band is. Are you someone famous? Oh, god, please don't tell me you are Steve Perry, because I would have to stalk you! LOL
Oh, just saw your comment. Sorry to hear your band broke up. I'm sure it's all for the good, and a better band will come your way! What genre?
I'm thinking of maybe changing Chris Christie to Twins
Ha OK that was kinda mean, I was told inside Chris Christie there is a skinny man that wants to come out, and I said, just one. Ok that was even meaner, I like Christie a lot more than I used to, I disagree a great deal with him but he is at least sane.
Tommy says goodbye ... so does Cheryl ... as do I. goodnight all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWH9HGS7SvQ
Thanks Alaska!! Nope...no one famous! We were a local cover rock/dance/disco/hip hop band. We were together for 10 1/2 years doing about 60 to 80 dates a year in and around southern California area bars and local casinos. It was fun, but the keyboard player moved to Chicago to open a music school for kids (he's originally from that area) so it seemed that it was the right time to go our separate ways. Just taking a break for now...if the urge strikes me later this year, I might join something, but have to be honest, I'm enjoying my weekends without dragging myself home at 4am every Friday and Saturday!!LOL!
If you are interested, I'll email you the link to the band and it's vidoes...
Thanks again!
John Boehner and Eric Cantor in "Dumb and Dumber."
The Three Stooges with Donald Trump as Moe, Ted Nugent as Larry and Rush Limbaugh as Curley.
and last but not least John McCain as "The Jerk."
Thanks, JK, I would like that. You can send it through NewsVine by going to my page, and I promise that I won't stalk you via email!! HA! Hey, have a great weekend!
Hey Alaska... Sent you an email with the info...have a great weekend! :)
Sweet!
"Hey, john, pass the bowl! :)"
...OK,Children, smoke 'numbers' one-through-ten.
But serriously, THE drink fave of us older guys: "The McCain Thang."
One half jigger of lime juice for that ascerbic tang.
One jigger of bourbon, for that old-timey classic cocktail body.
One dash of Tobasco, for that touch of 'ouch'.
Blend for 23 minutes, to make sure it's all good and dizzy, then pour into a old-fashioned glass.
Now, pour down the sink, and holler loudly, "HEY- who took my goddamned drink??"
(as long as no one is going to get to drink this, please feel free to contribute addional ingredients, and tell what it is that they would contribute...)
Hey, drive by! I think adding some bitter(s) would be good seeing as how crusty McNasty is a bitter man!
There 'y go, AlaskaGirl. But you didn't give a proportion. I'm thinking instead of a 'jigger' (an old guy term if there ever was one...), maybe, say, a quart? A quart and a half? Minimum??
OK- I gots one more.
The "Sarah Palin". Take one tumbler (see-through plastic is ok for this one- actually, it is preferred).
Do not add any ingredients. Leave empty, on the counter or bar.
Leave the room. Leave the party.
It's over.
Hey, nobody but I has commented on a new piece of news - come on, my fellow Snow Whites, you are a bit slow:
Here is the link:

Drive-by: Love it! I was leaving the expert proportion measurements to you. I know you "elders" got it over the rest of us!
Heading out to a dreaded work banquet event, so I wish everyone a fantabulous weekend!
'bye, you.
IR I'm heading south of the border so I'll have a skinny girl cosmo. Need any supplies. Have a nice weekend everyone. I am rooting for Silver Linings playbook on Sunday.
DBO - stir in two hefty tablespoons of Vegemite. The protein is needed to keep the pale, stale, male crowds testosterone levels up.
Steeler Fan had a great idea!
The LRU gang nominates Mark & Domenico for "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid"...
And one last nomination:
Barack Obama for "The Manchurian Candidate"
Glen Beck as "The Wrestler" since he has such a warm relationship with the WWE.
Bowl all gone, my bogart. Its not good to share your medicine except in the case of medical marijuana, thats goof for all.
Most EXCELLENT thread:
Marcus Bachmann - In and Out
Gone With The Wind
Hollywood is liberal we hear so often, as though there is something wrong with being a liberal in the United States of America. Those who ridicule Hollywood are of the opinion that the status quo of old is when America truly shined. I wonder, do people understand what the real "status quo" meant?
The history of the progression of America together with Hollywood is solid and I don't think people fully appreciate how much Hollywood has done for America. Bette Davis set up a Hollywood Canteen for servicemen during World War 2. Every single actor - male and female - volunteered their time to make certain our troops (our fathers? our grandfathers?) were met with welcoming faces and a home cooked meal. Clark Gable's wife Carole Lombard died in a plane crash after being on a war bond tour during the war.
So many of the movies they gave us so long ago were lessons in history, both good and bad. These movies were based on real life as well as ideas taken from novels - novels that were written about real life. Many of the film stars of yesterday were sincere in their desire that everybody in America have equal rights. Paul Newman, Paul Robeson, Harry Belafonte, Marlon Brando and Nina Simone.
Today we have George Clooney, Kerry Washington, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Wanda Sykes, Stephen Speilberg, Rob Reiner, Spike Lee, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to name but a few. Our nation couldn't survive without their voices, without their activism.
Gone With The Wind in most (but certainly not all) people's eyes is a masterpiece. Count me among those who believe it is one of the greatest movies ever made. It has all the ingredients needed to be just that - a beautiful leading lady, a popular leading man, a top notch supporting case, a riveting plot, beautiful scenery and majestic civil war era costumes. The length of the film is approximately 3.5 hours. The next time you watch this movie, notice that 26 year old Vivien Leigh is in just about every scene. There is a photo of her during a break in the filming, standing off to the side, tears running down her face out of pure exhaustion.
On the night of the film's premiere in Atlanta in December 1939, Clark Gable asked that instead of being treated as a movie star, that he be treated instead as just another spectator. He said he was attending the premiere to simply enjoy the movie, just like everybody else. He knew the movie was Vivien Leigh's, Margaret Mitchell's and David Selznick's achievement. To him it was a woman's film, a film he never wanted to be in. He couldn't say no to the role because in every poll taken back then of moviegoers, he consistently came out on top of every poll as the actor everyone thought should play Rhett Butler. And so he accepted, with strings attached.
A handful of books have been written about the making of the movie. There are as well many in-depth documentaries/interviews with many participants of the film. What people were most curious about (other than the search for Scarlett O'Hara) was whether GWTW was intended to be a historical account of life in the south during that time, or was it to be intended as a larger than life civil war/love story fictional type of film. I don't think anyone can deny that it was certainly not a historical account of how slavery, the war and reconstruction played out in the south. For me personally, even though Margaret Mitchell drew from people in her own life when writing the novel, I never saw it as a movie based on real life characters. I never saw "real life" characters in the movie at all.
David Selznick, who produced and oversaw the entire production of GWTW, was a liberal. During the making of the film Selznick was sensitive as to how to portray plantation owners as well as slaves. He received a great deal of push back from a lot of people, particularly in the black community, who felt the characterization of slaves in Mitchell's book were quite disrespectful. Selznick agreed. So instead of using the "N" word in the film, the producer settled for "inferiors" and "darkies", as well as using terms such as "white trash".
He was clear in his statements that he had no intention of making an offensive movie. Where he went wrong was producing a film that everybody saw as a film based solely on the south's point of view. Not very realistic. There was an uproar when the film was released because of the portrayal of blacks seen as subservient to whites and appearing content in their roles as slaves. That uproar over time would turn to respect.
Many writers were brought in to fix the script; famous directors were fired; the budget was blown to pieces; David Selznick took drugs to keep himself going 24/7 throughout the filming of the movie. At some point it was feared that production would just shut down for good. Director Victor Fleming had to leave directing The Wizard of Oz and step in to direct GWTW. It is said that this movie was essentially made by committee. Perseverance won the day however and we the moviegoer got a film for the ages that went on to win 10 (2 of which were special) Oscars in a year (1939) which by all accounts was THE golden year in Hollywood for film making.
And so in February, a month in which we celebrate Black History Month, this is a month in which we reflect on how far we as a nation have progressed.
What has this to do with liberals and Hollywood and Academy Awards?
During the huge celebratory premiere of Gone With The Wind in Atlanta, Georgia - one very important person from the film was missing that night.
Because of segregation laws in the south, none of the black actors in the film were allowed to attend the Gone With The Wind premiere. These decisions, from what I can find, were made by MGM. They did not want Miss McDaniel or any of her fellow black actors in the film to have to go through back doors and stay in hotels separate from their white co-stars.
And so it was that Hattie McDaniel, winner of the Oscar for Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy, could not attend the premiere. The first movie in which black actors were able to play the roles themselves, instead of white actors in black face.
Hattie McDaniel. In real life - the daughter of a slave.
Leonard Leff wrote about Gone With The Wind: "Moviegoers sensitive to the advancement of the black cause no doubt bristled at Ashley's nostalgia for the days of "cavaliers and cotton fields" and, as Ashley says wistfully, "high, soft Negro laughter from the quarter." Soon, though, "Mammyism" would disappear from the screen and black performers like Dooley Wilson (Casablanca) and Leigh Whipper (The Ox-Bow Incident) would excel.
A momentous era of civil-rights advances would follow. In retrospect the dialogue of African-Americans and Selznick International over Gone With the Wind seems a notable early landmark. "
Below is a website with some really nice photos taken behind the scenes during the filming of the movie.

On another thread, BCWC mentioned a great Ken Burns documentary, 'The Dust Bowl'. In honor of that great American tragedy and the excellent documentary, I recommend the following duo. Note, these can be enjoyed at the pre-Oscar parties.

RedDev . . . we do the chili sauce/grape jelly thing on our football Sundays but slow, and in a crockpot with meatballs. Sounds weird but DELISH!
You know what else sounds weird but is scrumptous?
I make pork chops with Catalina dressing, cranberry sauce & Lipton Onion soup mix.
First time I made it, I wouldn't tell the hubby what was in it because I knew he would go EWWWW!
Now it's one of his faves! lol
Layton,
We still have the same recipe too. Great little appetizers.
Please tell me that you do not call out "EWWWWWie, it's supper time!"
Why am I not surprised it is an Okie/Utah thing. All Utah recipes tend to be weird but delish (I'm surprised jello hasn't been worked into the mix).
@Feisty - I smell something squirmy in that pork chop dish. I'd try it, as long as I'm never told the ingredients.
Red Dev,
We only have jello shots in the summer!
Oh goodness NO!
I'm an superb cook (at least that's what my friends & family tell me), hubby is finicky about trying new things sometimes.
So, I just don't tell him what is in there until after he goes... Mmmmm this is GOOD!
PS: Before he met me, he absolutely refused to eat left overs of any kind! Things have changed dramatically over the years! ☺
zero
Awww, we do jello shots all year long! Any party you go to there will definitely be a tray of jello shots being passed around. Yummy goodness!
feisty - gotta try those chops. But, I think I'll hold off on telling my guy how they're made too. He might not try them!
Seeking,
I'll post the entire recipe on the flipside!
Funny thing is, he told his buddies about them and how he couldn't imagine they would be that good! lol
Feisty - sounds great. Thank you!
Pat, Boston, excellent post; thanks for the reminder.
As you said, I never saw GWTW as a historical movie either but rather a fictional story of the south, at times a nostalgic and idealic one with elements of reality and history in the mix.
Good grief, more drinks and more food! Feisty, look forward to that recipe.
The GOP has Ted Nugent....
RedDev: 'Glazed Cocktail Franks' I do not think they will go with my single malt Scotch that I earned this week. While in Court House I changed my voter registration. One less in the dying GOP.
The GOP has Ted Nugent....
Yeah, we know. We have prayer chains for them daily.
Feisty ... I'm going to trust you and try them! As for jello ... it is the ONE thing I have never been able to make correctly ever, ever, ever!
Congratulations, ExitO!! Good for you! Your next scotch would be my pleasure to buy! Cheers!
OMG! That is about a f'ing loony as it gets. I'll tell you how we could "survive"; we'd do a whole lot better without their air-headed, mud puddle deep "philosophy".
There is seriously something wrong with you Pat. I almost refuse to speculate but...perhaps you long for a father like our Weeper-in-Chief?
Lunatics who've escaped the asylum and seek imaginary spirits at an imaginary bar. How apropo, considering the imaginary leadership residing in our White House. Here, some news you may not have read on the FR:

Go find yourselves a real drink. No doubt with this crowd someone else is paying for it.
Oh, Simple Theory, you really need to lighten up! It's just some good virtual fun on a Friday evening. Just a time to let our hair down(for those of us with hair!), listen to some music, share some stories, etc. It's really not good to be as bitter as you sound. Very bad for the heart and the soul.
We don't watch the awards shows. All it amounts to is people with a case of " See ME" awarding themseves for doing their job. Do you get a trophy for doing your job? Do you get special recognition for doing your job, the job you are paid big bucks to do?
Anyway, so much for my tirade. Your suggestions for possible winners and movies is hilarious and if they were truly up for such recognition I just might tune in.
You misunderstand.
I seek to enlighten those of you who do not venture out into or understand the real world. Those of you embedded deeply in the cult of personality and slaves of the Modern Day Plantation Masters who tell you that you will never amount to anything more than what someone else has deemed you fit for.
My "bitterness" is eclipsed by every single one of you. You need only to first admit that fact and comforting realization will follow.
But first you must let go.
Simple ... perhaps this will lighten your burden ... don't be so grouchy, Monday will be here soon enough
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UouLQ-e6dP4
AG,
Bitterness and hatred is the ONLY thing that fuels this creature... please don't feed it!
The mere fact people like "this is your brain on drugs" will have a bleeding ulcer by the time Hillary Clinton is elected in 2016, is enough satis
Oh, thank you Zen Master.
LOL
Bartender! Make Simple Theory a stiff one, as I am sure it's not often he/she encounters a good stiff one!
The Simple One wouldn't know what to do with a "stiff one" if it hit "it" between the eyes!
Edit; Compliments of the FR gremlins;
They are a dying breed and the sooner the better for this country!
Stiff? reminds me of an old joke ...
Is that Hortense over there?
No, she looks perfectly relaxed to me.
BCWC, that is just so "apropos"! FYI Simpleton: that is the correct spelling!
Another really hearty LOL from "the cat"!
I see the fisting deadhead has raised it's ugly head to spout more uninformed nonsense on someone else's dime. How many critters does it claim this year? 8, 9?
BCWC. You're an Elmo fan I take it. Pegged it long ago
Looks like you need another lesson. It's "its" not "it's". You use "it's" when you are saying it is. Your sentence, 'has raised it's ugly head' misreads like, 'has raised it is ugly head'.
You're Welcome! See what I did here? You're, as in You are. Notice I didn't say "your welcome".
You're welcome! Class dismissed!
Bartender, I'm parched!
Thank You for the correction AG.
It's my pleasure. Now, are you sure you won't join us in an evening cocktail? My treat! And, I apologize for being condescending. Not nice, and I try not to do it very often. You are just harshin' on my "buzz"!
:)
Bellying up to the bar a bit late.
Can I still get a Miller High Life (the Champagne of Bottled Beers)?
Cheers!
Condescending? I didn't think so one bit. Perhaps a tad OCD for a blog but I understand. Thank you for the invite.
Bali Bob! One Miller coming right up! Better late than never I always say!
You're welcome, Simple Theory. I hope you have a nice weekend.
Simpleton (a.k.a SimplyFoolish.a.k.a. SimpleTheory) is from Follywood...ready for the Academic Awards?
Simpleton, a.k.a. Shirley Simple of Little Folly fame, now weighs a ton, thus nicknamed Simpleton. SimpleTheory is nominated for her role as a little folly in Little Folly & and a pirate in ConspiracyTheory
Hey, nobody but I has commented on a new piece of news - come on, you are a bit slow, my fellow Snow Whites:

"I see the fisting deadhead has raised it's ugly head to spout more uninformed nonsense on someone else's dime..."
YOW! I haven't had this much fun, since the PIGS ate my brother! Jeekers, I think I just realized what the 'simple' means in the moniker!
"You are just harshin' on my "buzz"!"
Hey, leave Mr. Buzz outta this....
Gotta go, kids. I Tivo'd Rachael Maddow ("Mad Cow", if you listen to one of the may 'liberal' media outlets...), and wanna go watch her.
I heard she's gay, you know.
And skinny.
And has short hair.
And has some kind of mole or something on her neck.
I think I'm beginning to see why the 'liberal media' mouthpieces like Rush, Sean, Glenn, et.al. don't like her, you know....
{Thank you Jody.}
With voter suppression not going away, it is important that Americans be constantly reminded of a time we do not want to return to. Not ever ever again.
Voter suppression to me equals segregation. Why go to Atlanta & celebrate if I can't stay with my fellow actors in the same hotel and restaurant?
Why go to the polls if they're not going to count my vote?
Think Progress:
Earlier this year, Republican National Committee Chair urged Republican lawmakers in states “that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red” — i.e. blue states with Republican legislatures and governors — to enact a plan rigging the Electoral College so that it would be almost impossible for a Democrat to win the White House.
Under these plans, a large chunk of blue state electoral votes would be allocated to the Republican candidate even if the Democratic presidential candidate won the state as a whole. Although some state lawmakers in key blue states such as Wisconsin or Michigan endorsed versions of this plan, the election rigging plans were widely derided as exactly what they are — cheating — and soon, even top Republicans like Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) or Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell wanted nothing to do with election rigging. The plans to rig the Electoral College appeared dead.
It's not dead in Pennsylvania:
Late this week, Pileggi — along with a dozen other co-sponsors — introduced a new plan to rig the Electoral College votes in his blue state of Pennsylvania. Under this legislation, a large chunk of Pennsylvania’s electoral votes would be awarded to the Republican candidate even though Pennsylvania is a solid blue state that has supported the Democratic candidate for president in every election since 1992.
Feisty
You forgot:
Barack Obama for "Liar Liar",
Nancy Pelosi for her reprise of the role of the "Wicked Witch of the West" in the Wizard of Oz,
Joe Biden for "Who's your Caddy?"
LOL conveniently forgotten
Reb,
glad you decided to stop by... really, list can certainly be partisan on both sides , it is all in good fun!
I am sure one of the folks will buy you a drink.
I am still waitng for my take out Hot Toddy.....
No, that's Mitt Romney for "Liar, Liar". He lied 73% of the time per Factcheck.
Northstar if you have a chest cold with lots of congestion here is your toddy, it sounds bad, but is not as bad as it sounds, and it will clear your congestion. Pour about an inch of some peach brandy or whatever you may have in a glass, warm it, and then crush a clove of garlic in it, drink it down and you will feel better.
Forrest,
A clove of garlic?
It sonds like a old world recipe.
The whiskey toddy seems to be doing the trick.
Yes a clove of garlic crushed into the brandy, you don't have to swallow the garlic in the bottom of the glass if you don't want to, and it is an old world recipe, an old Italian concoction, not only will it clear your chest but you will be safe from vampires clear through until morning.
Well, safe from vampires clear through until morning? 'Nuff said! The things you learn on here! Fabulous!
The elixer of the Italians, garlic!!!
I will try it now that I know you leave it in the bottem of the glass.
The vampire thing is an extra bonus.
Obama- The Truman Show
Daytona 500
Who wins?
(Interesting Fact: Americans will consume as much gasoline in 2 seconds as NASCAR uses during an entire season.)
Danica Patrick NOT!!! Sorry, but the hype over this lady is too much for me. Good driver but not a great one. For me, it's Michael Waltrip. He drives the #26 car in honor of the Newtown victims and appeared on "The Ed Show" last night. That took a ton of balls, since the NASCAR crowd is hardly a liberal one. My other choice, and probably the more likely, is Brad Keselowski who hails from my hometown in Michigan. In fact his family ran a service station not far from the house I grew up in so it's just a bit sentimental for me too. Other than that, it's a crap shoot. Daytona isn't about speed anymore, it's about survival.

Amusing. In case it escaped your little brain, anyone offering nominations were done so in regards to political figures. Nobody here personally attacked another poster. But, hey, I guess you will be who you will be. This is a fun Friday thing, so how about you put your little hatchet down and I buy you a "drink"? Anything you like, it's on me!
AlaskaGirl - sorry but I did hit out at JK - couldn't resist!
done 189 and only 11 more motels to go ... think I'll get zapped.
Oh, no worries, SS. I bought him a beer, so it's all good! I was really just trying to make a point to Zappas that all the nominees have been political figures, not any of the posters on here. I'm still waiting on his/her bar order, but he/she may not want to play.
Since arriving to the vine, I've always looked at most every poster on here as an equal offensive opportunity poster. As Frank offended everyone and everything with his lyrics, I only saw the post at first glance too one sided. Thanks for the drink offer. For me, alcohol kills, cannabis chills
Here's for those drinking

Frank Zappa was/is a genius. Right up there next to Eric Burdon.
I'm serrious.
4-roger on the cannabis. (you did know, didn't you, that cannabis doesn't make people steal or crash their cars into lamposts? PEOPLE that partake of cannabis do. The NRA logic, then, would suggest: Legalize weed. Right??)
Zappa's music doesn't get any respect from people who only think that good music comes out of the radio, and are staples on their favorite TV special. His music won't be fully appreciated & respected for another 200 years
May I suggest to all, Steven Wilson's "The Raven that refused to Sing" tour is coming to America, Starting in April in Florida. If you haven't seen him, may I say that it may be one of the finest shows you will see in your lifetime, and if you go, I would find it hard to believe anyone could be disappointed.
alaska Girl,
Get one for Simple Theory too.
He is the cranky one above. He only brought his" links"
Yes, those without thought, look to the links! Hey, I tried. He's a tough (wing)nut to crack!
Alaska Girl,
You are the "hostess with the mostest "this evening. :-)
Let's see if he softens up over time...
I am convinced that the one thing Republicans want more than any other thing is to wipe out affordable health care because it is Pres Obama's signature achievement and they hate him for getting it passed. Every time you turn around they are decrying the same nonsense, "put ObamaCare on the table!" No white person has ever been successful at getting affordable health care for the nation passed and the Republicans have voted more than 30 times to repeal it. Candidates at every level have promised to repeal it first day in office; whether they can actually do it or not; that doesn't seem to matter at all, it is an excellent selling point among GOP members. When the news was broadcast to the nation that ObamaCare was upheld by the Supreme Court; there was screaming, crying, yelling, and the gnashing of teeth!
I believe that there is hope amongst and within the Republican family that the sequester might lead to the failure of ObamaCare. It would be the single greatest rallying point for ALL GOP tickets in 2014..."and my fellow Americans, we kept our word, we have gotten rid of ObamaCare once and for ALL!!!" Can you imagine the overwhelming jubilation at the sound of the words and the crushing defeat of that arrogant niggar?
Right on...
GOPers, according to Bobby Jindal, are associated with THE STUPID PARTY, and their radical base are following a strategy of stupid is as stupid does!
TPGOPers have taken the Republican party hostage and come hook or crook they're not going to negotiate a plan to set the party free! The radical right are sticking to their 2010 plan... eliminate government! Including the officers on hand to comfort Sandy Hook parents and children.
Idology had taken such a hold on the Republican party common sense, compromise and morality have been shoved to the back of the bus where they've placed minorities. Their handling of the sequester comfirms this!
However, I'm guessing the radical wing of the GOP, a large caucus preventing Boehner from striking a deal with Obama, haven't taken into consideration the defense cuts contained in the sequester bill will hit 85% of RED STATES. So, my bet is... once sequester hits, these red states will come begging Obama for a deal!
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND 54% re-elected Obama because:
1. We agree with his policies
2. We are a centrist country and fundamentally disagree with 19th century GOP policies
3. We understand that the GOP is the party of the rich
4. We understand that the GOP spent the last 4 years obstructing
5. We understand that the GOP IS STILL obstructing, and
6. OUR VOICES WILL BE HEARD IN 2014 AND 2016.
Agreed! Good post. But the last election proved we are now a center left country. The teabag right is loosing ground each day and we are seeing many of their staunchest starting to walk back some of their former comments. It's fun to watch, but we must remember to keep the eye on the ball and never let up.
Lets see. We will have forest fires, food shortages, interruption of air travel, anal seepage and God knows what else according to the White House. All this because we will be spending $14 billion MORE than last year if the sequester happens. How is spending more constitute draconian cuts? Chicago fear tactics politics at it's finest.
If I was the President and the lame Democrats I would be ashamed of my conduct. The President flying around the country trying to scare the people by talking about laying off 1st responders (BTW, most are paid by local taxes, not federal); SOT Ray LaHood talking about chaos at the airports because of cuts/layoffs of controllers; Homeland Security crying about border patrol and immigration processing, etc.,.
I am sure, I know damned well I could, these idiots in Washington crying doom and gloom can find cuts just in the waste and over payments. Just look at the DOT crying about airports and controllers, I am sure there are plenty of places to cut other than so called "essential" personnel.
President Obama doesn't give a damn about the American people or what might happen, he is only concerned about HIS legacy and his ego. He wanted the SEQUESTRATION, it's his problem, he signed it into law. He went on the bully pulpit and said he would VETO and bill that tried to stop it. He promised to hold the Republicans feet to the fire. Now he wants to cry, lie, blame someone else and stomp his feet just like a spoiled child that didn't get what he wants. He is the President, all of these Departments come under the Executive Branch, spread the $24 Billion over all 12 Departments and let them make the cuts.
Drink much? You sound like you do.
The split in our nation is quite simple and it ALL boils down to this:
The WEALTH & TAX Creators vs The TAX & WEALTH Consumers.
What the "low information Obama voters" do not understand is that without the "Wealth & Tax Creators" there will be NOTHING for the "Tax & Wealth Consumers"... NOTHING, and THAT is where we're ALL headed.
sfcret---Have you even been paying attention to how this whole sequestration B.S. came about?
It's your party that is to blame. The GOP.
YUP, keep sucking on that straw until your cheeks turn inside out because we all know those "wealthy job creators" need to pay less. Look at how they're turning around and reinvesting in this country. Low information voters? You guys win hands down on that one everytime. Does Friends of Hamas ring a bell? LMAO.
Tom, Exactly how is the GOP to blame for the sequestration after it was constructed by Democrats, supported by Obama, then Obama threatened to veto any legislation doing away with the Sequestration?? And you still say it is the GOP's fault?? Why? because they have been asking for cuts which are desperately needed in this country, Obama refuses to cut anything and now we have the evil Republicans and they get blame? What will Obama not blame them for? I have never seen a President with such complete hatred for half the country. Say what you want about Bush, how bad of a President he was, there was never any arrogance or public display of disdain for the Democratic party or half of the country like Obama has for the Rebublicans!!
Surely, you meant that as a joke. Bush will go down in history as one of the worst presidents ever, and perhaps, the most divisive in history.
Huh?? Exactly where is the joke about this? Exactly how was Bush divisive?? He actually got approval from both Dems and Republicans to go to war in Iraq! Something Obama would have never done! He would have just issued an executive order and say, "screw the Republicans". When do you remember Bush bashing the Democrats in any of his public speeches the way Obama does all the time about Republicans. I don't care if you want to say Bush is the worst President in history! That is your opinion like mine about Obama being the worst President in history!! But don't say he was divisive and had a lack of respect for the other party! Disagreements yes! Hatred, NO!
Obama will obviously go down as the most divisive in history! Not Bush!
Typical left wing responses from Tony and Tom, can't give any facts to back up their BS left wing lies. I will almost willing to bet that the "low information voters" (left wingers) will all start crying and running in circles on March 1st if the sequestration goes into effect.
LET THE SEQUESTRATION GO INTO EFFECT. The world won't end, thousands of workers will not be laid off and the government will still limp along with their heads in the sand.
sfcret---You want facts? Okay, here's a couple. Fact # 1--- You're an idiot. Fact # 2--- You really kind of blend in with the rest of Republican party.
Fact # 3--- You've come to the wrong place if you think we Liberals give a shi#t about what you have to say.
There's some facts for you. Are you satisfied?
Tom - Typical left wing response, call names and try to insult posters that don't agree with you. You really are a "low information voter". All you do is swallow the crap put out by the left wing media and Obama's White House.
As for the sequestration, it was Jack Lew and Obama that came up with the idea. That has been proven by numerous accounts. Bob Woodard, Senator (D) Max Baucus, & Jay Carney, but don't let facts get in your feeble mind.
Sequestration was a DELAY so that the Congress could get their @!$%# together. Boehner got 98% of what he wanted with that drama. And now, at 98% he owns the piece of @!$%#. Oh, and he also owns the fact that he had a year and a half to get his @!$%# together and he didn't.
Worst SOH EVER and worst Congress! All owned by the GNOP! I sure hope these asswipes have enjoyed their time off,...all paid. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns,...Boehner OWNS this @!$%#.
blamo,
"Seepage" you say?
What, where, when, please fill me in about the seepage?
Who cares
The Tea-Sucker's philosophy is to turn one American against another because they subscribe to the notion that anyone who isn't working is freeloading. What an asinine concept??? People are permanently injured on the job everyday! What should happen with such a person? They should lose the home they've paid on for the past twenty years? They should lose their car and their family should starve, be kicked out of public school or denied medical attention? That is why everyone with sense is moving away from the Tea-Suckers. Social programs, (known to the Tea-Suckers as 'entitlement programs'), are in place to aid those, who through no fault of their own, may need public assistance to continue. The Tea-Suckers make no allowance for such instances.
Remember during the campaign season when the topic shifted to an imaginary person who is injured but has no insurance? They were perfectly comfortable with allowing such a person to DIE! "IF THEY HAVE NO INSURANCE, THEY SHOULD DIE BUT DON'T HELP THEM ON MY DIME!" This thinking is NOT the American way. We have survived and advanced through neighbors helping neighbors; through generosity shown toward the less fortunate; through giving and showing benevolence toward ALL OTHER AMERICANS! We cannot at this stage in our history, suddenly, turn our backs on the very principals that made this nation GREAT!
Right on...
