Third Republican comes out in support of Hagel; 15 others ask Obama to withdraw nomination

Even as one of their members, Richard Shelby of Alabama, now says he will vote in favor of not only cloture for Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary but for the Hagel nomination itself, 15 other Senate Republicans are calling for President Obama to withdraw his nomination.

"While we respect Senator Hagel's honorable military service, in the interest of national security, we respectfully request that you withdraw his nomination," the Republicans wrote to Obama and announced in a press release from Sen. John Cornyn's office. "It would be unprecedented for a Secretary of Defense to take office without the broad base of bipartisan support and confidence needed to serve effectively in this critical position. Senator Hagel's performance at his confirmation hearing was deeply concerning, leading to serious doubts about his basic competence to meet the substantial demands of the office. While Senator Hagel's erratic record and myriad conversions on key national security issues are troubling enough, his statements regarding Iran were disconcerting."

Recommended: GOP's weak position on the sequester

Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee engage in a sharp discussion regarding Chuck Hagel's nomination as defense secretary and his disclosure of personal income.

Cornyn of Texas is up for reelection this cycle and has a Lone Star State freshman, Ted Cruz, rising as the new darling of the right. The signers of the letter include Cruz, James Inhofe (R-OK), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Roger Wicker (R-MS), David Vitter (R-LA), Mike Lee (R-UT), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Dan Coats (R-IN), Ron Johnson (R - WI), Jim Risch (R-ID), John Barrasso (R-WY), Tom Coburn (R-OK), and Tim Scott (R-SC).

Notably not signing on, however, were Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), two-thirds of the Graham-McCain-Ayotte grouping.

Shelby becomes the third Republican to voice public support for Hagel, giving him 58 public yes votes. The other two Republicans to come out in support of Hagel are Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Mike Johanns of Nebraska, who filled Hagel's seat in the Senate. (Johanns announced Monday that he would be retiring when his term ends in 2014.)

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL)

"Sen. Shelby intends to support the Hagel nomination barring any unforeseen disqualifications that come to light before the vote," Hagel spokesman Jonathan Graffeo told NBC. "That is not a change of heart. He has always been inclined to support Hagel, but he voted against cloture as a courtesy to members who said they needed more time to examine Hagel's record."

Several Republicans have indicated they would likely support at least cloture after the Senate gets back from its break next week.

"...leading to serious doubts about his basic competence to meet the substantial demands of the office."

Actually the serious doubt about basic competence lies with the Republicans blocking this nomination.

Yet in 2008 Cornyn won 55% to Richard Noriega's 43% to represent TX in the US Senate. Hagel has 58 of 100 public 'yes' votes.

Look in the mirror you dumb *ss! It is no less "unprecedented" for you to represent TX with 55% support than it is for him to run the DoD with 58% and counting. I'm so sick of these self-righteous SOB's!

Republicans, it is not what your "job" to constantly obsess with trying to force failure on, or to try to somehow "defeat" the President of the United States, and Republicans look more and more stupid everyday!

Congressmen/women were sent to Washington to do the people's work, NOT to continue to try to find ways to start arguments and create battles with the man that the American People chose to be President.

So either the repubs would turn on McCain which I would pay money to see, or the democrats would vote him down and then we can start ALL over again with Hagel. How much do you want to bet that McCain would have no problem with Hagel at that point?? I say, if they want to play politics then start dealing.

It's time to bring it up for a full Senate vote. Voters are getting very tired of a few vocal members of Congress preventing the representatives we as a majority elected to do their jobs on our behalf. Gumming up the works because your side doesn't have the votes is childish and not the way a democracy is supposed to work.

Well last week or so, Cry baby Bonner said the President was trying to destroy the Republican part completely. All the President needs to do is set back and let the Rep's destroy themselves. They are doing that just fine. Did anyone see the peace where the Koch Brothers are stepping back to see what happened in the 2012 election. Seems they lost with everyone that they backed. All the money for nothing. Man that had to hurt. There old tactics are old and don't work with America anymore. Even the Dumbest of people seem to be on to the Koch Brothers and Friends. I have always wondered why people would vote for someone that was going to do harm to them and what they earn?????? That has just killed me. People's hate over riding good judgement. I think many of those people have wised up and seen how they have been used and then cast aside. I remember when the Tea party was in DC and some old hillbilly woman said the President is a layer. The reporter ask what he lied about, She said I don't know be he is a layer. They didn't give the talking points if someone ask her a question. They wanted to do like Sharron Engle and don't let her talk to show how stupid she is. Mr. President, Do not drop Chuck Heagel. He is a good man and you need to fight hard for him.

Wow the MSNBC-Obama machine is going into high gear!

So THREE Republican senators could support Hagel. Wow...

In the last fifty years no Secretary of Defense was confirmed with more than THREE VOTES AGAINST!

And you're talking about three Republicans who may be in favor of Hagel...

Did you notice that FORTY SENATORS voted against Hagel on the Senate floor?!

FORTY! Not four!

.

So what does that tell you?

.

Well if the president refuses to withdraw this awful nominee then it looks like we're going to see a filibuster.

And to all the Democrats who are supporting Hagel's nomination, how does it feel to support a guy who:

* attacked a nominee for ambassador for being too gay!

* attacked American Jews and supporters of Israel by perpetuating the anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about the "Jewish Lobby".

* voted against a bill in the Senate which was supposed to support Roe vs Wade

* And called America the world's bully on Al Jazeera!!! As if they need another person bad mouthing America on their channel...

Good luck with that Obamites!

And by the way, how that Obama economy working out for ya?

It's about time that the Senate starts taking its job seriously. The man is woefully unqualified and under prepared. Not to mention that his whole outlook on foreign policy does not match the position the US has taken on the major issues confronting us, NK. Iran, etc...
But don't expect Obama to give a crap what the Senate thinks, he will ignore their advice and continue to push, partisan hack style, for Hagel's confirmation. And when that happens we can look forward to having three people asleep at the wheel when it comes to mananging foreign policy, Obama, Kerry and Hagel.

BTW, to all that skipped over reading the letter sent by the Senators to Obama, I suggest you read the letter. It is well thought out , to the point, done in a bipartisan spirit and with the good of the country in mind.

With Hagel at the helm you can expect Iran to push forward even faster, with his blessing, than thety are now.

UN watchdog: Iran installing sophisticated devices at uranium enrichment plant

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

In a move seen as a defiant step as world powers look to rein in Iran's nuclear program, the county has started installing sophisticated centrifuges at its main uranium enrichment plant, a U.N. nuclear report confirmed on Thursday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that 180 of the so-called IR-2m centrifuges and empty centrifuge casings had been hooked up at the plant near the town of Natanz, Reuters reported Thursday. The centrifuges were not yet operating.

The advanced centrifuges are expected to accelerate Iran's ability to process more highly enriched uranium. The West and Israel are fearful that such material could be used to build an atomic weapon.

Chuck Hagel is a Republican. Republican Senators oppose his confirmation. The President can't be partisan hack when he is "pushing" a member of the other party for nomination.

Holding up the nominations of the various cabinet members is NOT good for the country, and the very same bi-partisan folks you cite confirmed SoS Kerry overwhelmingly, so one must surmise that the senators don't share your (I am sure well researched and supportable) assertion that he is "ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL".

The "failed Obama economy". You mean the one where the DOW has doubled and is still rising? Where the housing market rebounded and unemployment has went down? You guys live in la la land, seriously.

After Bush's failure of an administration I was laid off, along with millions of other Americans. Under Obama the economy rebounded, new investors came in and bought up my old company - reinvesting and expanding it. And now I have a better job with the new owners.

I'll take the "failed Obama economy" every time over failed Republican trickle-down B.S.

Hey Dangerous Mind,

about that DOW...

Just don't forget what happened in 2000, and then in 2008...

Let's just say that after the first quarter earnings reports come out, the way it's starting to look from the disastrous results some companies have already reported for January. Plus consumer confidence is down. And U.S. companies restocked their store shelves and warehouses at a slower pace in December, a sign of caution as sales weakened. Not to mention if the sequester actually takes effect and Obama fails to avert this disaster, the DOW is going to take a nose dive like something out of a James Cameron film.

I'm talking Titanic meets the Abyss...

Except if you're a Democrat, then I say: buy every stock you can get your hands on! Take another mortgage on your house and buy stocks like there's no tomorrow!

Good luck! ;-)

Na, I don't believe in conspiracy theories. Just simple economics.

Once a bunch of dismal quarterly earnings reports start to cause a few stocks to dive it might start a stampede.

All the conditions are there for another collapse. It's just a question of what will set it off first.

Just think back to how things were looking back in 2000 and again in 2008. Looking back, there were many warning signs...

And God help us if this sequester really takes effect. Then the excrement will really hit the fan.

The Republicans in the Senate might want to consider the fact that they DO NOT represent the entire country. These obstructionists were elected to represent their own states but now they have decided to block everything and anything with Presidents Obamas name on it. This is not responsible governing it only serves to damage the country and divert attention from critical issues that need to be addressed. The American people are watching and in 2014 will punish the Republican/Tea Party for their childish and un-patriotic behavior.

With only THREE Republicans voting in favor???

Over the last fifty years NO NOMINEE FOR SEC. OF DEF. HAS BEEN CONFIRMED WITH MORE THAN THREE VOTES AGAINST THEM!

Hagel received 40 votes against him in the last vote in the Senate. This is not "broad bipartisan support" at all. All you have to do is look at ANY Secretary of Defense who was confirmed in the last fifty years.

        .

And to Dangerous Mind, who said:

All I can do is try to warn you about not putting too much of your savings in the stock market right now.

This house of cards is about to crash. The mounting debt, the irresponsible policies of both Democrats and Republicans over the past four years (sequester anyone...), and the weak economy (what about those unemployment numbers??), are all going to come together to create the next big recession. And the DOW is going to be the first thing that will crash.

This is not the first time this has happened. All you have to do is look back at 2000 and 2008, and you'll see that this is nothing personal against Obama, it's just simple economics.

But if you want to bet your money on this economy continuing to roll ahead while its wheels are coming off their hinges then good luck with that!

True, no Sec. of Defense in the last 50 years has been confirmed with so many "against" votes, but then again, we haven't seen a political party as crazy and lockstep against the sitting President as the GOP is in the last 50 years either.

If the GOP we're working with the President over the last 5 years, confirming judges and a myriad of appointees to various posts, and NOT breaking filibuster record after filibuster record, you might have a point. If Hagel's nomination were statistical outlier, rather than the norm, you might have a point.

As it is, the GOP have filibustered so many nominations now, that even if one came along that they had reasonable and valuable objections to, it wouldn't matter cause they've cried wolf so many times now that the public (and the Democrats) have grown tired of the shtick and just ignore they're whimpering/whining/crying. I'd be more concerned about a nominee if the republicans DID NOT filibuster at this point, as THAT behavior is outside their normal one at this point...

Plus, it's hard to take anyone seriously when they think wheels have "hinges."

Personally, I think the real reason the R's have fought Hagel's nomination so hard is not only the basic ideological differences some of them see between themselves and the nominee, but also the fact that he was in their camp for 8 years. It'd be like going to a group panel interview for someone applying for a job at your workplace and finding out the candidate is your ex. Sure, they might be qualified, but you sure as heck don't want them hired considering what they know about you and might be able to say to others. Whatever he may know about his formor colleagues could potentially give Hagel considerably more leverage than a GOP outsider might have down the road in dealing with congress.

OF COURSE this angers the GOP. His statements were 100% accurate and indicate good judgement and a handle on the FACTS. Having a handle on the FACTS makes him a RINO for SURE!

Jesse Jackson..really? How about we talk about Republican Senator Domenici and his disgusting behavior while a senator. Or we can talk about John Edwards and his many, many digressions. Or we can talk about Chris Lee, or Elliot Spitzer, or Traficant, or Duke Cunningham. If you can't face the issue at hand without devolving into petty partisanship you're just a part of the problem.

Has anyone noticed that the new number one opposition to Chuck Hagel is Ted Cruz, a brand new Senator, who has already completed 2 trips to Israel? He has been a Senator, all of 3 months. The Israelis wasted no time.

Apparently, he has been selected as Israel's new champion in the Republican Senate. He will be serving his new constituemts in Israel, getting handsome contributions from Jewish donors and AIPAC. I guess Israel recognizes that Mitch McConnell and John Mccain are on their way out and planned for the day by supporting a new American politician, willing to sell out America for Israel.

Texans should wake up and get rid of this guy before he sells out the whole country.

Most IQ tests are flawed models for testing anything other than memory retention and information processing anyway. Typically, if you've done IQ tests, you know that you will test out over a range of numbers over time. I've tested as low as 108 and as high as 132, but I usually center in the 115-120 range.

Oddly, even though I write for a living, I actually test lower on IQ tests that emphasize creative thinking, so vocation is usually not an indicator of how well one will score.

There are no drawbacks to having a high IQ. The only drawbacks that exist, as with any character trait, are drawbacks in how well you respond socially to other peoples' reactions to the character trait.

Maybe a 162 IQ doesn't involve being able to process language? Take the phrase "Anyone ever hear "Bush" mentioned on this thread recently?". "This Thread" does not mean all threads. The only person mentioning Bush in this thread is Lil Michelle. So I wouldn't tout a 162 IQ if you can't even understand what you wrote.

I'm enjoying seeing my name on the interwebs. I see why some of you live here. I might have to try this more.

Oh, and as far as Bush being old news compared to Jesse Jackson Jr... there's a big difference between them. What JJ Jr did was discovered and prosecuted and he will be paying the price for his actions. We are all paying the price for the actions of Bush faking his (our) way into a war.

And that same concept holds for any president. We all are affected by their decisions and should never forget the past. Much different from a man committing a crime and being punished for it. It's done. No more news about it. Next story please.

Ok, I only have a 155, myself, but here are some of the drawbacks I've noted.

Not knowing if you are talking over someone's head, without meaning to.

Social ostricization because of repeatedly doing the first.

Being thought of as an intellectual elitist, when you aren't

Overcompensating and dumbing down your vocabulary too much, thus offending people who assume you think they are stupid.

Often not engaging in what otherwise could be enjoyable discourse for fear of either a) out-thinking the room, or b)offending people you don't wish to offend when you try to debate at their level.

Being in groups and finding what they think is engaging discussion is, to you, hideously innane. (like, for example, my co-workers constant chatter about NASCAR and shotguns.)

And yes, when I lived in Chicago, I worked in Chicago Heights, and Jesse Jr was the rep for that district. I'm surprised he was on feisty's ballot in Roselle.

Yes, I understood what you were saying. Feisty's earlier response could have been taken to imply she voted for Duckworth over Son of Jesse. I haven't lived in the Chicago area since 2001 so I don't know how the districts and who is representing where could have been shaken up. My personal race here was Rep George Holding (R) vs Charles Malone. Unfortunately my former rep (Brad Miller - D) retired.

It would be unprecedented for a Secretary of Defense to take office without the broad base of bipartisan support and confidence needed to serve effectively in this critical position.

Once again, why in the blue hell would the GOP want to win a majority in the Senate when being the minority is clearly where the power is?

Case in point, this letter. Clearly the GOP believes that their opinion as the minority in the Senate far outweighs the majority.

These Republicans are despicable. Mr Cornwyn, what is unprecedented is trying to obstruct a Presidential Cabinet position appointment.

But, Republicans do so many unAmerican things to show their "Real American Patriotism".

That's why the tea people republicans have to keep telling us what Patriots they are. Even they don't believe they are true Patriots, that's why they have to keep telling themselves they are.

The massive failure of past cabinet appointees like Hillary Clinton is reason enough to more closely scrutinize nominees. I think Hagel will be fine, but glad to see due diligence done on vetting people that will be handed this kind of power.

I hope the day after he is confirmed Chuck Hagel announces that he has changed his party affiliation to Democrat. C'mon over, Chuck---Democrats accept differences of opinion and treat fellow Democrats with respect.

SF - I agree with you and I hope he changes his affiliation from Republican to Democrat and also hope he takes Colin Powell with him. Hagel & Powell are both RINOs. Hagel really doesn't have much political power and is a "yes" man for Obama.

That said I do believe Hagel will be a better SOD than Panetta was. I believe he will be able to handle the necessary cuts to the Defense Department. He will be confirmed by the Senate, which is more than the Democrats did for the appointment of Senator John Tower.

sfcret---I haven't understoood why people like Powell stay in the GOP---it seems clear to me they aren't in agreement with many of their policies but worse than that they aren't treated with respect.

My recollection of the Democrats opposition to Tower was that it was based on lack of qualifications for the position (his medical issues) as opposed to disagreement with his positions. To me those are two different matters.

I imagine they stay in the GOP largely because they view themselves as Republicans in the old Eisenhower mold - which largely doesn't exist anymore, but if you take the time to go issue by issue with a lot of older Republicans, you will discover that their views on most of them more closely match someone like Bill Clinton than someone like Marco Rubio or Cruz from Texas.

SF - I believe Colin Powell was a Republican because during his military career liberal leaning officers didn't usually get promoted. The Republicans have always been more defense oriented and Powell rode the rebuilding of the military under Reagan. However, I believe he has always been a Democrat at heart.

As for Democrats opposition to Tower's appointment, if memory serves, was based mostly on his so called "drinking and womanizing" and the fact that Democrats just didn't like the man. Senator Towers was much more qualified than Hagel.

Okay, sfcret, you fell into this one. John Tower? You have got to be kidding if you are going to defend that person. That, or you advocate putting a known chronic alcoholic and womanizer into such an important position as Secretary of Defense. Come on. If you don't believe me, search his confirmation hearing articles and the things that he himself said he would not do should he be confirmed. Yes, he promised that he would not drink one drop of alcohol while SoD. Give me a break. A chronic drunk cannot make a promise like that and keep it. If you are going to defend someone, at least do us all the courtesy and pick someone worthy of defending, then at least an honest discussion can ensue.

Sweetie, there was nothing "so called" about it. Very well known. You apparently don't set a very high bar for such an important position. Chuck Hagel is hands down much more qualified than John Tower could ever hope to be.

As for womanizing, you lefties loved, and still love, one of the biggest womanizers in Washington by the name of William "Bill" Clinton. Never saw a woman he didn't try to get sexual favors from.

Alaska Girl - BTW, I was not defending Tower, I was pointing out what the Democrats used to deny his appointment. If you read my post at 10.1 above, I stated that Hagel would be confirmed and WOULD make a BETTER SOD than Panetta.

BTW, another reason the Republicans are stalling is to get more information from the WH on certain issues. Today we find out that Egypt, who we just gave military equipment to, is now refusing to give the U.S. access to a person suspected of being a leader in the Benghanzi attack.

I have long believed that one way to get the Republican party to move from the extremes is for folks in the middle to leave. It is what I did when I felt the party did not represent my views and I think if some very public people switched parties it might encourage more moderation.

SF - I feel the same about the Democrats moving from the far left wing of the Democratic party to what the Democrats used to be back when Truman and Kennedy were in charge. Right now the Republicans are leaning to far right and the Democrats are leaning to far left. Bigger Government and more spending are not the answer. To many Government programs now that are unmanageable and waste to much. I believe the GAO has stated recently that Medicare alone has paid out billions in fraud and over payments.

We need the GAO, and outside auditing firms if necessary, to do a complete Audit of all agencies and their programs before we throw more money into what isn't working. Freeze all spending at current levels until all audits are completed. We already know that there is billions of dollars wasted through fraud, and duplication of programs.

I can see how that Fox News article has you confused... Because it's a Fox News article and you were born confused enought to read it.

The suspect was released by Tunisian authorities for lack of evidence. He's being questioned by the Egyptian authorities and information is being shared. He is thought possibly to have been involved in the earlier training of individuals that might possibly have later been involved in the attack at Benghazi (without the extra "n"). American interrogators have thus far not been allowed in the same room with him, but are on-site.

Of course, Fox credits Ms. Lindsey Graham with intervention that gained access to the same prisoner the article whines about not having access to and gives special mention to little Ricky Ricardo from FL for asking a stupid question and getting a good answer that he, nor any of the other Fox readers, stood a chance of comprehending from a White House spokesman.

The smart money is on waiting for the plot to develop rather than trying to incite scaredy-twits and using the subject to clown-car republican ass-wits into the forefront... But then that's smart money...

SeekingSanity - Again with the left wing BS. Clinton was impeached for Perjury, lying under oath, not for having an affair. Now, other than Newt, which congressmen were having affairs?

sfcret, do you even read or even comprehend what you write? I did not say that you are for bigger government. You implied that the left is bigger government. If you did the research, you would see that under Obama, government has actually decreased in size. Democrats are not for big government, a fallacy that the right likes to spread around. Democrats are for sensible and smart government, and if the friggin' Republicans would get their heads out of their asses and actually assist we might get further ahead, which economists have said would have happened if not for the overwhelming obstruction from the right over the last few years. Republicans either need to get it together or get the hell out of the way.

                              That's your mistake, sfcret.

Believing the Democrats are the party of big government. Your assertion that most believe that in no way constitutes fact.

It is a fact that government has shrank under Obama.

It is a fact that the largest singular increase in government took place under Bush with the creation of the Homeland Security Department.

It is a fact that 72% of the debt was incurred during Republican presidencies.

You've got nothing but belief, pal. Which doesn't happen to coincide with reality this time.

As a Republican, most of my life, I can understand differences within both parties to an extent, but the almost extreme right part of the Republican Party may very well spell it's doom with remarks over this whole Hagel affair. If the election didn't tell you things are starting to change very quickly, then I would be very quick to check your 6! The Republican party is about ready to get blown out of the sky! Don't be guilty of stupidity, with intent!

Too late, Stevo, I think the horse has left the barn, but it is nice to see some moderate Republican response. We usually only get the extreme right wing nut cases over here. Good case in point is the moron's comment above mine. See what happens when one of "their own" goes against the party?(their delusion, not mine). They are quick to tear one up and eat them up like savages.

Excuse me AKgirl... But I think perhaps you're being too kind... That Stallion left the barn as if the republicans had just branded its Tea-Bag... And was nearly out of sight in an instant!

In related news: The BBC is doing a new Wild Nature documentary series and the first bit is an in-person trek to the last known village of practicing Cannibals. Release has been delayed somewhat though because the film crew got so drunk at the RNC that most of the footage taken there was useless.

Thats what the letter says, written by 15 republicons, who asks hagel nomination be withdrawn.

Hagel does not need support or approval from bunch of spineless israeli/jew lobby slaves.

Just more obstructionism. Has NOTHING to do with Hagel, just sour grapes over the Presidential election. It's a INTERNATIONAL shame that the U.S. lacks a Defense Secretary in a time of war and this is nothing short of TREASON.

This is absolutely ridiculous. My taxes on health insurance and Social Security this year have gone up over 6% of my income and I am expected to live with that but the government is saying it cannot function with a measly 2.3% reduction in spending??????

This is being made out to be some kind of abominable disaster and the end of the world and that is profoundly stupid.

Sequeater is ONLY a REDUCTION of 85 Billion to the 1.2 TRILLION the US Government will SPEND that is has to FIRST BORROW in order to SPEND!! So, all we are effectively doing is BORROWING 85 BILLION LESS! Instead of BORROWING and SPENDING 1.2 TRILLION we will be BORROWING and SPENDING 1.15 TRILLION.

Get over it people. They are making this into some kind of disaster which it is NOT!

Maybe not a disaster, but it will slow consumer demand, and possibly put the economy back in recession.

Wow, dangerous mind, you should learn how to do research. The MSN Money report had an article today that said the stock market is on a very slippery edge and has a very good chance of another disaster. And this comes from your own liberal press. And as far as Hagel goes, he acts like a man with a mental problem so do you trust him to play chicken with our countries security. And I would not want McCAin either he is to old and a loose hot wire. They should get out of the good old boys and find some new blood. Some one that really has this countries interest at heart, but good luck with that as most of them only want a bigger pay check and to shaft everybody in this country. Both parties seem to forget that they are working for the people of this country and each has democrats and republicans in their districts that they are supposed to represent them all. As far as one party giving some, including the president, none have period. Both have taken the stance it is my way or no way,so shame on them both. An old Scott told me today that a politician needs to be a skilled statesman and that our's have forgotten how to be one.It is a shame that so many use the race card as to why people do not work together as that is just not so.Racism is caused by those that sling their rights above everybody else's and forgets that we all are Americans and have the same rights.

It's relatively easy to pick them out of a line-up right now with their fists full of race cards and their round after round of betting against America... We need to be sure they're remembered for what they are. Any roach left behind may be carrying eggs and they inbreed readily.
