VIDEO: First Read Minute: Sequester crunch time, plus Rubio's immigration politics

With just two weeks to go until dramatic spending cuts to domestic programs and defense go into effect because of the so-called sequester, NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro analyze where it goes from here. The president is trying to use the bully pulpit to curry support for his side, but congressional Republicans are pointing the finger back at him. Plus, Marco Rubio vs. the White House on immigration. This doesn't mean the end for immigration reform. In fact, it likely means the opposite.

No wonder this site never has any REAL discussions of anything that is relevant... who would want to discuss anything with someone displaying such a bad attitude.

No, these libbies, they don't want to discuss anything. All they want to do is hide behind their monitors and take verbal pokes at anyone that disagrees with them.

Johntho, Rubio has had some practice in stealing. Rubio has stolen from his campaign

Rubio and Rivera: Birds of a Feather

The pattern of financial manipulation is shockingly similar to that of Rivera's longtime pal and former roommate U.S. Senator Marco Rubio who famously abused the Republican Party of Florida's credit cards for his personal use.

Congressman Rivera double-billed taxpayers of Florida for travel expenses

Congressman Rivera used an un-regulated slush fund so he could "live off campaign contributions for almost a decade" -- enjoying a lavish lifestyle despite never earning more than $28,000 a year

Rivera and Rubio owned a house together — which they failed to make payments on.

Oh, ozzie, ozzie, it isn't a matter of being afraid of Rubio, it is merely the idea that the GOP thinks he's the second coming; the one who will save their party because he's Cuban, not because he has great ideas but because they're hoping to get the Latino vote. Rubio repeated the same tired, worn out ideas of Reagan during his rebuttal; nothing new. I just think it is a shame that the GOP is pushing Rubio, who probably does have potential for 2020 or 2024, to the front of the line too soon and will ultimately end up tarnishing him.

Hey, I'm all for a flat tax, as long as goods and services are also priced accordingly. Utilities, 1% of your income, food .5% of your income, housing 5% of your income, taxes 10% of your income. That way, everyone pays their fair share in taxes, goods, and services.

So I guess the republican party clinging to the Cuban leg of little Ricky Ricardo is going to thrill someone besides themselves... Because even if they're 100% thrilled (and I don't think little Ricky's leg can even support that) they'll just be the same minority having a little tea-party trying to expand their ranks.

What they don't seem to fully realize is that Senor Ricardo's leg will not produce offspring... And even if it did, they'd probably vote against them 18 years later as second-generation immigrants.

I'm a "buy local" kind of Democrat. Obama is wrong wanting to import foreign engineers and entrepreneurs to come into America to take American jobs. It's nothing less than outsourcing right here on American soil. There are 2.4 million American engineers currently unemployed in our country. Obama needs to get every last American engineer back working before he even thinks about replacing them with cheaper foreign workers.

Listen to Obama, he tells us what he is doing and we sometimes seem deaf, we need to say no when Obama is out of line. We are, after all, Democrats. This is our America and we need to keep it our America.

Obama only "owns" the sequester in the sense that he has out-maneuvered the GOP into it. They fell willingly into that trap because they were so sure Romney would win and they'd never have to deal with it again.

Obama should have thought about sequestration when he designed it. Now it stares him in the face and all he wants to do is play the blame game and kick the can down the road. Obama knows he can't hide from the fact it will cost the middle-class and he can't spin this issue forever. With Obama's "4 year" promise we are still waiting for those good middle-class jobs. Don't just talk about it Mr. President, do something about creating private sector jobs not just more government jobs.

dr821,

We have added 532,000 private manufacturing jobs since 2010, which just begins to reverse the decline in manufacturing jobs over the previous decade.

There are 607,000 fewer people working in public sector jobs then there were when President Obama took office.

So why are you claiming something that isn't supported by facts?

  • 4 votes
#5.2 - Tue Feb 19, 2013 1:21 PM EST

Amy - We have lost 650,000 private manufacturing since 2009 (Prez-0's first year in office) - this is a net loss of -120,000 manufacturing jobs.

It's easy to pick & choose data, but let's keep it real, like the honest total number of jobs loses since Prez-0 took office (including the millions of people who have been unemployed for over 2 years & have given up looking for a job [See U6 unemployment numbers})

That is one of the most asinine posts to leave your keyboard ! Sequestration was passed by the Republican House, the Democratic Senate and signed by the Democratic President ... who came up with the idea to start with !!

The sequestration will result in a net 2.0% to 2.5% reduction in our expenses ... nut draconian and almost insignificant to the overall picture of spending which has increased under Obama !!

Then, YOU, dangerfield, try to put it back on the Republicans and suggest they are merely trying to score political points !!! It is not going to hurt everyone, but maybe it will send a message that our country cannot indefinitely continue to spend $1 trillion +++ beyond it's annual revenues !!!!

Continuing to spend money we don't have and have to borrow hurts EVERYONE, especially our kids in the future.
