Admittedly Chuck Hagel has many qualifications that would be ideal for this job. However from the Republican perspective he also has disqualifications that cannot be overcome: He is a moderate that has been nominated by President Obama. It is clear that Hagel's appointment would not further the stated Republican goal of "Hope he fails". Thus it follows that the President should nominate someone that would be consistent with this "Hope he fails" policy of the right. Several possible candidates fit this bill. I have no doubt that the Republicans would readily support the nomination of Michelle Bachman, Glen Beck, Herman Cain or maybe even Pat Robertson or Donald Trump for this position.

So if Hagel has such moderate views, why couldn't he back up his statements at the hearing? Why did he fumble for a way out and tried to evade the questions and constantly have to say that he didn't really mean what he said before?

If his views are so moderate, they should be easy to defend. So why can't he back up his previous statements?

Hagel's pets are subversive and need to be investigated before John McCain will allow it to come to a vote. Then there is the problem with the coffee he drinks, and the way he ties his shoes. Which side of bed he gets out of in the morning. We must have answers to these vital questions.

Come on with it, the fact is President Obama nominated Mr. Hagel because he felt he was the best for the job. President Obama deserves the respect of every other president and allow these nominees to move forward. Congress don't get to pick and chose who the presidents cabinet is. That is the presidents job. Barring something drastic they should just move along.

Representitive Rubio gave the response to the Presidents State of the Union address. That is the same Representitive Rubio who voted NO to Womens Rights and NO to confirming Senator Hagel. President George Washington, An American Revolutionary and the French Revolution

He had become an American citizen who believed so strongly in the French Revolution that he was granted an honorary French citizenship. Some in France thought him a friend, but a great many others looked upon him as a foe. They thought him a royalist.

France proved to be a loyal ally to the colonists in their long and hard fought struggle for freedom during the American Revolution. Both the American and French Revolutions began on the same principle - The Age of Enlightenment. And so President George Washington felt the French Revolution was, other than its excesses, a good thing. France's revolution to be sure was a violent terror-filled brutal revolution. Similar revolutions would take place in the future.

France's poor economic condition at the time of their revolution was a result of the national debt they inherited from their role in the American Revolution.

What was particularly striking back then was the fact that Benjamin Franklin (former Ambassador to France) had no idea France would have their own revolution and he saw no comparison whatsoever between the French and American Revolutions. He worried about his French friends and wanted them to flee France.

And so during the French Revolution, Thomas Paine, while writing Age of Reason, was arrested for treason and sentenced to death by Robespierre because of his opposition to capital punishment. Paine was opposed to revolutionaries sending people to the gullilotine as well as being vehemently against the execution of King Louis XVI, who he felt should have been exiled to the United States. Knowing he would be executed, and as an American citizen, Paine tried to secure the assistance of the American Ambassador to France in order to gain his release, but was unsuccessful. For the rest of his life Paine blamed George Washington, president at the time, for not securing his release.

One of the subjects Paine felt most passionate about was the poor, which he felt was epidemic throughout supposedly advanced European cities. He had wanted people to use reason as a guidence throughout their lives, as opposed to them being ruled by kings, lords and religion.

On the day he was to be executed, a mistake occurred which resulted in Paine escaping the guillotine. He was then able to hold on for a few more days, as James Monroe, future president, used all his connections and successfully secured Paine's release from prison.

Thomas Paine, at the invitation of Thomas Jefferson, returned to America friendless and lived the remainder of his life an alcoholic - who was abandoned and ridiculed.

The man who wrote "These are the times that try men's souls "- the man who inspired a nation to an American Revolution with his pamphlets - died on Grove Street in Greenwich Village in 1809, with only 6 people attending his funeral, 2 of which were black.

Actually, I think those running North Korea employ their belligerence for the purpose of extracting aid from the west. They're not as crazy as they would like us to believe but they need to maintain power because they know full well that an overthrow would result in them on trial for numerous crimes against humanity.

As for the Iranians, you may have a point in that they have plenty to lose but never underestimate these religious fanatics and their all consuming hatred for Israel. Last I checked Republicans won 32 more house seats than did the Democrats in 2012.

I also seem to remember Republicans gaining in governorships in 2012.

Democrats also only gained 2 seats in the Senate.

The fact that the Democrats gained any seats in the Senate at all is enough to call that cycle a massive Republican failure. Take a look at the seats the Dems were defending in 2012 and tell me they should have ended up with a net two seat gain. If the Republicans were anywhere near competent, they'd have gained multiple Senate seats last year and they could have even flipped the chamber without it being a major shock.

As for the House, don't act like you don't know what gerrymandering is. The Democrats won the raw House vote, it's just mighty hard to transfer that into seats when the lines in most swing states have been drawn to massively favor Republicans. Not that I'm saying the Republicans are the only ones who gerrymander, I'm just saying that pretending as though Republican gerrymanders aren't a major reason why the House is still in their hands is pure wilful partisan ignorance.

Oh, also, you should probably mention that there were only eleven gubernatorial races in 2012 and the majority were completely uncompetitive. The Democrats won every race that was seen as competitive before the election (Washington, Montana, West Virginia, and New Hampshire) and the only GOP gain was in North Carolina, which everyone knew and accepted was going to be a Dem loss from day one.

John McCain thinks we should have stayed in Vietnam and kept killing people that were no threat to us in anyway. After the history is in and everyone knows we had no reason, morally, economically or otherwise to be there McCain is still in denial. I am sure once this administration answers to what actually happened in Benghazi that it was actually a fast and furious in the Middle East I am sure it will go away, but the fact they got caught at their distribution house in the suburbs caught them off guard. SHould have been an embassy but wasn't, shouldn't have been supplying rebels with arms but were. They got caught red handed and sending in help would have confined they shouldn't have been there in the first place, hence validating Owebama getting impeached. THey are right to press the issue and I hope it won't go away until someone is held responsible, but you lefties go ahead and look the other way since it wasn't one of you own aborted children. But, you see, when you have a network that was recently polled by only 5% as the most trusted news network (tied for last with the Comedy Channel), that network will do whatever it can to stay relevant. I'm not saying it will be successful, but that's what they are trying to do. And they will print as much one-sided propaganda as it takes to incite reaction.

Granted, we are falling for it by our very presence on this forum... but it's not going to make NBC any more trusted. At this point, my personal view is that NBC is more as a news entertainment network (e.g., Comedy Channel) than a news network. And I've enjoyed this forum more for it.

Stevens saw that he was in danger, and asked for help. The other European countries withdrew from their consolates. The US Gov't denied Stevens' requests, without even forwarding Steven's requests to our Secretary of State. That has nothing to do with funding.

Why did these same republicans fail to demand answers about other attacks on our embassies prior to President Obama's taking office? In addition, please answer why McCain's questions and animosity toward Chuck Hagel pertaining to the "surge" and Mr. Hagel's difference of opionion on the surge has any relevance to today?

Good grief, it is sad that these same GOP senators failed to challenge any Bush officials on Iraq and now defend their mistakes and failures by blaming Mr. Hagel because he dared to challenge, dared to disagree. Four thousand dead American military, an estimated hundred thousand dead Iraqi civilians and McCain's focus is Hagel's disagreement about the surge. Democrats failed to challenge Bush officials as well but at least they aren't playing petty politics about it.

The GOP spent hours grilling Senator Hagel on Benghazi, Iraq, Israel to name a few yet spent zero time asking questions relevant to the operation of the Department of Defense.

I WILL say that after 9/11, there was not a successful terror attack (oops, manmade catastrophe as you dems might prefer) on Bush's watch after 9/11.

Second, the Owebama Monarchy was MUCH more involved in Benghazi than the Bush admin was involved in 9/11. Had George W received a phone call that morning (or in the preceding days) advising him that terrorists were about to hijack planes and fly them into the World Trade Center, and Bush responded by saying that he was going to fly to Vegas for a fundraiser and can't be bothered - but to let him know how things turn out... and his administration decided to fly unarmed drones to take pictures of the destruction as opposed to sending armed drones to prevent the attack... THEN AND ONLY THEN the two situations would be comparable.

So please go sell your brand of stupid somewhere else.
