President Barack Obama's choice to lead the Pentagon, former GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel, will likely be confirmed next week, one of his most dogged opponents said Sunday.
"I'm confident that Sen. Hagel will probably have the votes necessary to be confirmed as secretary of defense," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."
After Senate Republicans voted to sustain a filibuster and block the former Nebraska senator's nomination from advancing toward confirmation, McCain acknowledged that Hagel will likely win confirmation once the chamber returns from its recess.
Arizona Sen. John McCain visits Meet the Press to discuss the ongoing battles in Washington over Chuck Hagel's defense secretary nomination, the sequester and government spending, and the Benghazi incident investigation.
"I think it's a reasonable amount of time to have questions answered," McCain said of the week-and-a-half-long window which Senate Republicans demanded to pore more thoroughly over their former colleague's records.
Democrats and the Obama administration have complained that a filibuster for a defense secretary nominee is without precedent. Moreover, they argue that filling the defense post is particularly urgent given outgoing Secretary Leon Panetta's plans to leave the Pentagon, and the looming "sequester" of automatic spending cuts, which fall heavily upon the defense budget.
The administration publicly shrugged off, though, the notion that the delay had damaged Hagel's ability to serve effectively.
"No, he's not going to be a weaker defense secretary," said Denis McDonough, the president's new chief of staff, "he's going to be a great defense secretary."
Wrapped up into the GOP's objections are the desire to ding the administration, a demand for fuller answers to the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks on the diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and personal quarrels with Hagel over his criticism of President George W. Bush and the handling of the war in Iraq. McCain denied, though, that Republicans' attacks on Hagel were personal in nature.
"99 percent of it has to do with the positions Sen. Hagel has taken," he said.
The Hagel fight has consumed Congress in recent weeks, threatening to expend Obama's political capital as he enters a second term. It's yet to be seen whether this fight, and the looming fight to replace the sequester with other equivalent savings, would affect other elements of the Obama agenda — including gun control, and immigration.
Amid a New York Times report that suggested the White House had pushed ahead with its own immigration bill, McDonough said it was consistent with Obama's promise to simply be prepared with his own alternative plan. Obama, McDonough said, was still hoping that a bipartisan Senate group would be able to produce its own comprehensive immigration reform proposal.
"I believe we're making progress on a bipartisan basis," said McCain, a member of the eight-member, bipartisan Senate group working on the immigration proposal. The Arizona senator said, though, that Obama had had no communications with the Senate group.
"Does the president really want a result?" asked McCain, reflecting Republicans' concerns on the politics of immigration. "Or does he want another cudgel so he can beat up Republicans to get an advantage in the next election?"

All the questions have been answered, Senator McCain. Mea culpas have been issued. The State Department has committed to increasing security.
Now, about those inquiries you senile jerk. How about you go back to the attacks on embassies when President Obama was NOT President. One might think if those security issues had been addressed, Benghazi might never have occurred.
Only right-wing idiots didn't know that the games you, Graham, and Cruz (McCarthy lite), were playing were charades. Damned right Hagel is going to be confirmed. You've convinced us you're idiots, you don't have to waste any more time on that.
Poorly played at that. If they were auditioning for an acting part, they would be laughed off of the set.
All the questions have NOT been answered.
.
Why won't Hagel come clean about who's been giving him money for the last five years?
.
Has he received money from a group called "friends of Hamas"?
.
Has he or the Atlantic Council which he chaired received money from foreign governments, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, or Iran?
.
Has he received money from individuals or groups from Lebanon?
.
And why does he refuse to divulge all the information about speeches he's given over the last five years?
.
If he'll come clean there will be no need for all this.
And if he does have something to hide, then isn't it the responsibility of the Senate to find out BEFORE he is confirmed as the secretary of defense!?
The attempts by Democrats and the Obama administration to pretend as if these questions are unprecedented are laughable: Secretary Clinton and former Senator Kerry divulged all the information about money they received within the five years before they were appointed. The only difference is that Hagel has given only partial answers and in some cases evaded the questions completely.
.
.
Plus, I would like a straight answer about what Hagel meant by his statements when he said that: "the Jewish lobby intimidates people", and "causes the Senate to make dumb decisions".
Okay, he said that he should have used the term: "Israel Lobby" instead. But still, what does he mean by that? Which senators are intimidated? He couldn't answer Senator Graham when he asked him to name one. And what "dumb policies"? When asked about it, he didn't explain what policies he was talking about.
So either he's just a sniveling little liar and he lied to the committee when he said he didn't really mean it. Or he should explain why he was making such accusations. So which is it?
IS HE A LIAR, OR A JEW-HATING ANTI-SEMITE?
Which is it?
why can't the FR commanders get rid of this wilsonarden for good? I've been here for close to 3 years now and only recently has spammers like this shown up. C'mon now!
Not a McCain fan! This time the Republicans have it right. Find someone else. Hagel just looked ,responded, and denied any reasonable person the confidence he had what it takes to do the job. Lackluster, lazy demeanor, no charisma, no enthusiasm, no knowledge, always seeking answers, no way for the guy. Keep the pressure to resign. the worst nominee I have ever seen. Why the hell did Obama choose this person? Hagel said he doubted he would lead anything. What do you people see that he has??
Next hearing Menendez is out. Senate office raided for information. Prostitution and ethics violations and Breaking the law. Not good when the FBI probes him!
Rubio too nervous! Said he did not know how old the Earth was. thinks the Bible Preachers are right that it is 5000 years old. Says not sure. Get some balls boy!
Cantor seems to have changed some! Republicans get one free piece of advice! Stop pissing off the Women. Next advice will be 58k a month. *k donated to public relations for the Platform of the Republicans. They are all to be fired. Palin has she she is in touch with the people and would help..Smile
Admittedly Chuck Hagel has many qualifications that would be ideal for this job. However from the Republican perspective he also has disqualifications that cannot be overcome: He is a moderate that has been nominated by President Obama. It is clear that Hagel's appointment would not further the stated Republican goal of "Hope he fails". Thus it follows that the President should nominate someone that would be consistent with this "Hope he fails" policy of the right. Several possible candidates fit this bill. I have no doubt that the Republicans would readily support the nomination of Michelle Bachman, Glen Beck, Herman Cain or maybe even Pat Robertson or Donald Trump for this position.
Boner, to a tee.
McCain the McMonkey is speaking from the outerspace.
He is the lucky monkey recently being launched into space for scientific research to discover GOP monkey mutations after their massive failure in November 2012 elections.
Bravo David, well stated... He should also concede, he and his pals, should retire. They really are mean spirited and vindictive... Nothing to do with Hagel's qualifications... Just anything to say no to the President...
The GOP is supposed to be the party that respects well-established traditions; and...
It's a well-established tradition that Congress defers to the president on what people the President wants to run the executive department. It's the basic rule of separation of powers, each branch has the say inside its own sphere. Only when there is clear violation of laws, Congress can come in and call those guilty to testify in congressional hearings.
.
In the Hagel case, the GOP senators are clearly violating the US constitution and its sanctioned separation of powers. No wonder the Conservatives don't believe in evolution, because they are getting worse each passing day.
That's because - despite real objections that many Democrats have - they will blindly do the party's bidding.
Procrustes said about Hagel:
What about Hagel makes him a moderate?
Was it his attacks against a nominee for ambassador on the grounds that he was TOO GAY? Is that the position of a moderate?
Or his statements about the "Jewish Lobby" and his accusations that other senators are intimidated by the "Jewish Lobby", which he couldn't back up when asked about it at the hearing?
Or when he called the U.S. the world's bully on Al Jazeera? Are those the positions of a moderate?
So if Hagel has such moderate views, why couldn't he back up his statements at the hearing? Why did he fumble for a way out and tried to evade the questions and constantly have to say that he didn't really mean what he said before?
If his views are so moderate, they should be easy to defend. So why can't he back up his previous statements?
Hagel's pets are subversive and need to be investigated before John McCain will allow it to come to a vote. Then there is the problem with the coffee he drinks, and the way he ties his shoes. Which side of bed he gets out of in the morning. We must have answers to these vital questions.
Come on with it, the fact is President Obama nominated Mr. Hagel because he felt he was the best for the job. President Obama deserves the respect of every other president and allow these nominees to move forward. Congress don't get to pick and chose who the presidents cabinet is. That is the presidents job. Barring something drastic they should just move along.
Demorats ruined that long ago with Bork, Bolton and the many Federal Judges that the Democrats tried to filibuster for purely partisan reasons. The Democrat way is the new norm. Quit bitching when it works against you.
All the Republican party achieved was to solidify the resistance against reelecting these idiots. They achieve nothing except to embarass the United States in the eyes of the World and now they will scream about President Obama lowering the image of the US abroad.
Absolutely dumb policies of the Republicans. It makes me ashamed to be an American Veteran to see this crap every day coming out of our elected officials.
Representitive Rubio gave the response to the Presidents State of the Union address. That is the same Representitive Rubio who voted NO to Womens Rights and NO to confirming Senator Hagel. Is he the best Republican they can find? If so we will have a Democratic President for the next 20 years. The Republican party is sick and I am not sure anyone has a cure for this self inflected illness.
The Republicn party is dead and needs serious self analysis to arise from the ashes.
Funny watching liberals defend to the max a guy who tried to block an ambassador's confirmation because the candidate was too gay. You guys really don't have any principles.
John McCain says old soldiers don't die, we just fart away our principles !!!
Hagel is not the problem, the problem is the GOP-TP !!!
Listening to the old-has-been McCain just now on "Meet the Press," the questions were about Hagel, and all his answers were about the President, so, as usual, the old republican is playing the same game the rest of the republican congress is playing, "Oppose Everything Obama." They are beating Benghazi to death, asking stupid questions about "4 dead heroes," sure, but look at all the dead hero SOLDIERS in Iraq and Afghanistan, why do these idiots keep putting Benghazi more important than our dead soldiers.
It's simply amazing this old war-hawk could be so blatantly against, and attach his friend the way he has!!
Nothing more than a political, personal vendetta against President Obama.
Hey, seaskip (#1.18)
Laughing my mouth off .. That's a good one.
'Old soldiers don't die, they just fart away' ... only applied to McCain anyways, all other elder veterans have always been a treasure of this great nation.
If you would have said funny watching liberals defend a republican, your statement would have some merit. Instead, it looks like the same old desperation the teabagging whacks always say when they have nothing to offer. Facts are that the President and most everyone else with common sense know this man is the right person for the job and it's time to confirm his nomination and move on. That's something you guys haven't grasped yet how to do. Kick, scream, block, obstruct, anything to throw a turd in the punchbowl. That's the conservative game plan for the last 4 plus years. Got news for ya', it ain't working anymore.
So the GOP's pointless and wholly unnecessary attempt to obstruct the Hagel's appointment is going to come to nothing. What did the Republican Party think they were going to accomplish except yet another effort to work against the interests of the American people and to fail miserably in the attempt?
The foul stench hanging over DC is that of of the GOP crashing and burning.
Amazingly, you are right and David Walker is wrong. Only the REASONABLE questions have been asked and answered. There are still a plethora of dumb, stupid and irrelevant questions that remain unanswered.
Yep, Hagel probably has the necessary votes, and the Iranians will have nuclear weapons. Both forgone conclusions. However, only the Israelis may attempt to change the latter conclusion, certainly not Obama nor his new lackey
Q22,
The differences is that Bork, Bolton and whole host of others were opposed because they were NUT JOBS!
Hagel is a middle of the road Republican--- he's NOT a left-wing nut job like those guys you mentioned were right wing nut jobs, or a total drunk like Tower.
Wet Willy,
It's North Korea that HAS nukes. THEY are the problem. They have nothing to lose.
Iran has plenty to lose, so they are less of a threat (in my opinion).
The opposition to Hagel is all about Israel. Notice the posters on these forums who oppose Hagel are invariably Zionists, such as Duqu, Procrustes, Cassandra, Eli and the like, who continually make posts demonizing Iran using false propaganda.
Israel must not win in this contest. Too much is at stake. We do not need another war for Israel, such as the one in Iraq, planned and sold by Zionists, led by Paul Wolfowitz.
@DavidWalker
SPOT ON!
McCain/Graham/McCarthyliteCruz:
all three need to apologize
to America
for trying to turn our government into
a replay of the RepubliCon PartyOverCountry Clown Show of 2012.
Patriots build their country up, they do not try to destroy it.
McCain/Graham/McCarthyCruz definitely do not conduct themselves as patriots. They need their own country where everything is their way or no way. The best place where they already have a head start to live their dreams is Somalia...maybe.
@Duqu....Is everybody supposed to love Israel and it's out in the open occupation of Palestine? Is the everybody supposed to love that Israel breaks treaties and International Law? That they tried an assassination attempt on Meshaal in the '90's breaking an only 3 year "peace treaty" with Jordan? I sure as hell don't, and if it weren't for the ridiculous US policy of propping up Israel with money, they would turn to dust. Maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea since they think they own any territory they choose and damn the people who live there, use internationally banned weapons(white phosphorous bombs against Palestine a few years ago), reduce or cut off food supplies, building materials, etc. by blockades. They are nothing more than the pigs who persecuted them in WWII, and now THEY are the pigs. They're just killing the Palestinians in slow motion is about the only difference, except that the US supports anything Israel wants.
As for Grahams question, no....of course he's not afraid of the Jewish Lobby since they pad the pockets of the PACS and SuperPACS so he and others in Congress can keep their cushy lil jobs while screwin' over their own countrymen. He LOVES when his paycheck is about 3 to 5 times more than the average American and does a hell of a lot less to earn it, he LOVES he can give himself a raise, so again, no.....no Congressmen would admit they're afraid of the Jewish Lobby when they're being bought off by them. The US is bein' slowly destroyed by the Jewish Lobby, and ALL lobbies for that matter! Besides...this is the United States of AMERICA, not Israel. They shouldn't have any influence in our govt in the first place!
A President's Day Story
Said The Marquis de Lafayette - A free America without Thomas Paine is unthinkable.
John Adams said - Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain.
Yet written in his obiturary - He Had Lived Long, He Did Some Good and Much Harm -
President George Washington, An American Revolutionary and the French Revolution
He had become an American citizen who believed so strongly in the French Revolution that he was granted an honorary French citizenship. Some in France thought him a friend, but a great many others looked upon him as a foe. They thought him a royalist.
France proved to be a loyal ally to the colonists in their long and hard fought struggle for freedom during the American Revolution. Both the American and French Revolutions began on the same principle - The Age of Enlightenment. And so President George Washington felt the French Revolution was, other than its excesses, a good thing. France's revolution to be sure was a violent terror-filled brutal revolution. Similar revolutions would take place in the future.
France's poor economic condition at the time of their revolution was a result of the national debt they inherited from their role in the American Revolution.
What was particularly striking back then was the fact that Benjamin Franklin (former Ambassador to France) had no idea France would have their own revolution and he saw no comparison whatsoever between the French and American Revolutions. He worried about his French friends and wanted them to flee France.
And so during the French Revolution, Thomas Paine, while writing Age of Reason, was arrested for treason and sentenced to death by Robespierre because of his opposition to capital punishment. Paine was opposed to revolutionaries sending people to the gullilotine as well as being vehemently against the execution of King Louis XVI, who he felt should have been exiled to the United States. Knowing he would be executed, and as an American citizen, Paine tried to secure the assistance of the American Ambassador to France in order to gain his release, but was unsuccessful. For the rest of his life Paine blamed George Washington, president at the time, for not securing his release.
One of the subjects Paine felt most passionate about was the poor, which he felt was epidemic throughout supposedly advanced European cities. He had wanted people to use reason as a guidence throughout their lives, as opposed to them being ruled by kings, lords and religion.
On the day he was to be executed, a mistake occurred which resulted in Paine escaping the guillotine. He was then able to hold on for a few more days, as James Monroe, future president, used all his connections and successfully secured Paine's release from prison.
Thomas Paine, at the invitation of Thomas Jefferson, returned to America friendless and lived the remainder of his life an alcoholic - who was abandoned and ridiculed.
The man who wrote "These are the times that try men's souls "- the man who inspired a nation to an American Revolution with his pamphlets - died on Grove Street in Greenwich Village in 1809, with only 6 people attending his funeral, 2 of which were black.
Thomas Paine. A revolutionary. A founding father who they say only did some good.
____________
Take heart Chuck Hagel. It is sometimes the most worthy who are treated the worst. You have the respect of those who have known you well throughout your career, including the President of the United States, despite the callousness and cruelty of our so-called brave men in the United States Senate.
Tony - I don't think the posts are being screened any where near as well as they used to be. This wilson character appears in just about every thread as deleted - why not just ban him like they used to do. The general comments from the extreme right have become increasingly more vile, threatening and hateful and nothing is done. I guess this is their idea of new and improved.
KimH - you're probably right. As Feisty commented in another thread, could be they're trying to run us off of here. Maybe the complaints by the teawhacks is just too much for the mods to handle, so they're just giving in and letting them have their way. Who knows. All that is important is that the majority of Americans are level headed and realize what a danger these people would be if they got hold of the reigns of power again. That is the most important thing.
Funny how republicons wanted to see 5 years of taxes from Hagel...yet only 1 from Romney.......Hilarious!!!
So transparent they want to continue obstructing for any reason.........and the results are always the same.
Republicons show themselves as anti American........PRO 1% Rich! DOHHH!
And how about the college transcripts from Owebama? Oops... This has nothing to do with Hagel's tax returns, but rather his lack of education on the major issues, and his prior anti-American rhetoric.
Though I have to mention that it's funny how NBC has covered this story with more intensity than Benghazi. Keep up the reporting NBC - maybe next year the polls will show that you're even LESS trusted than the Comedy Channel.
Excellent, David Walker!!!!!
I couldn't have put it better myself!
McCain is an old sore loser. He's trying so desperately to keep his name in the spotlight. Why, I'll never know. If I were him (THANK GOD I'M NOT!!!!!!), I'd want to get my name out of the press PERMANENTLY. He's a real embarrassment to the Republicans and especially to the country. Who really cares what he says????? (Oops, I forgot about the Right-Wing Nuts...........)
kimH-1330542 and tonybeeerm,
Thanks for your comments. I would humbly request you read the extreme left wing comments and language, insults, masked cursing, slurs, race baiting, hypersarcasm, and name calling entered numerous times daily by the same posters...last Friday "celebrating" apparent sucess in shutting right wingers out. Something is extremely wrong if comments cannot be balanced, well-reasoned and at least adult and respectul -- on BOTH sides.
Mr David Walker has anyone told you how much of an Ass you are? I would only assume that your Ignorance abounds and you must be one of the Millions of Traitors in this Nation who gave up there Souls and Votes for Free Crap, and re elected someone who has NO Clue, nor does he give a crap about anything other than himself, as he surely could care less about the Nation. You have Betrayed us, and you should be ashamed. The Rest of you PinHeads, need to get your heads out of Obamas ass and see whats really happening in this Nation because of your Actions. I would be surprised if we have a Nation by the end of this Con Man is done i 4 yrs. You know the same damn thing happened back in the late 30s , that guys name was Hitler, if you cant see it now, then your all dumber than a box of rocks.
"The Hagel fight has consumed Congress in recent weeks, threatening to expend Obama's political capital as he enters a second term. "
that was the ReThuglican's whole objective . . . at a time when we have a part-time Congress (thanks to Boehner) the more this do-nothing Congress can run down the clock, and take weeks & weeks of vacation, the less that gets done.
It is clear that they have no interest in governing. Their goal is to keep THEIR jobs - not help Americans get jobs. If they don't vote on anything, they are less likely to get primaried from their own further-right wingers.
Vote them out in 2014/16 - we need a Congress that actually WORKS!
.
FORWARD! :-)
That's right liberal lemmings, attack McCain while you ignore the FACT that Hagel made a complete idiot of himself during the congressional hearings....you know the part where he stated Obama's policy on Iran dead wrong, and an aide had to sneak up and correct him. The dude was clueless, even CNN and other MSM admittted it. Yet, you ignore that FACT, and instead go into your same old tired, juvenile namecalling mode. But, I guess if you can worship an inept president as he continues to solve absolutely nothing, you can live with yet another clueless bungler in his cabinet.
McCain who?? Thought he was dead, oh, only in our minds. Well then, who cares what McFool says??
McCain has demostrated what the word of a conservative is worth, by joining with the other Republican senators who, during the Bush era, said that the filibuster must never be used for a cabinet nominee.
The weird thing is that the conservatives trashed their word of honor for a silly fight against an ex-GOP senator who had a 100% approval rating from the NRA and other strong conservative credentials. McCain and company did nothing except cement in the minds of Americans that conservatives are mean-spirited obstructionists without honor, who put party above nation.
Realist17, Have you been hanging out with Donald Trump? Certain issues have been put to bed. Before allowing the president to be re-elected I am sure the GOP turned over "EVERY" stone and if there was a sketeton they would have found it and used it. Time to move on.
Chuck...excellent post at 1.30. Spot on!
Duqu...you must be joking. Who does the Jewish lobby try to intimidate? Everyone. I can't count the number of times I've been called anti-Semitic because I refuse to bow to Israel. We should have bombed the bastards back into the stone age when they attacked the USS Liberty. What gross liars. If any other country had done that, there would have been hell to pay. But Israel just says," OOps!!So sorry guys. It was a mistake." And they get a free pass on 30 dead Americans. INTIMIDATION? Get real. They are douche bags. Do I hate Jews? No. But I despise the bunch of lying, theiving bastards that run their govt. I have several Jewish friends. I don't think that they steal from me though. Israel does.
Too many of you commenters have only your "armchair" view of the world on which you base your opinions, or worse yet, you drink the "kool aide" spewed by the Administration-in-Chief and his socialistic thinking advisers.
Remember "Chuckie" from the horror film? That is what we will get with Hagel. I voted for him, originally, and then realised, by his performance, that the "enlisted", combat vet did not have the intelligence nor the reasoning ability to serve our country as a politition...so why would I support his nomination for SECDEF?
If confirmed, "Chuckie" will further the actions that Obama has in mind to destroy our military. Obama pays lipservice to our military while quietly doing his best to undermine them and our national security. So who HAS been paying "Chuckie" since he left Congress? WHAT HAS "CHUCKIE" BEEN SPOUTING, since he left Congress? These are fair, unanswered questioned being stone-walled by the Administration.
I seriously doubt he would be confirmed if "party" lockstep were set aside!
"That's right liberal lemmings, attack McCain while you ignore the FACT that Hagel made a complete idiot of himself during the congressional hearings."
Hey – McCain already admitted on Fox the other day -- his opposition to Hagel is NOT about qualifications, it’s NOT about Israel, it’s NOT about Iran, and it’s NOT about any of that. McCain’s opposition to Hagel is personal --- Hagle is NOT politically correct enough for Senator McNasty because he failed to properly suck up to George W. Bush.
Yep, need to run everyone off this thread EXCEPT Progressives. That will take care of everything.
Talk about folks being "vile, threatening and hateful"....all one has to do is read the 1st post on any article from FLYeisty.
So, excluding EVERYONE but Progressives from posting their opinion will do a lot of good. Then the Progressives can just talk to one another just like a Social Media site and give each other hugs and kisses which they already do anyway.
Yep, that will work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back to the article:
Hagel confirmation will be nothing more than pushing Mr. Obama Progressive agenda to the extreme in our military.
Maybe Hagel will travel with Mr. Kerry to Iran, to the "Arab Spring II Countries", and to the Taliban held North African Providences to talk "peace". Then they can slip up to Russia to "discuss" eliminating nuclear warheads after brief stops in Palestine for a "settlement" tour and in North Korea for an underground tour.
Starman writes:
I'm always amazed at how jealous the Right is of David's intellect. I mean, if you want to see a true dumb ass, here is what Duqu wrote about Hagel: Has he received money from a group called "friends of Hamas"? As Sailcat so eloquently put it: You know, mandatory intelligence tests would completely clean out the GOP in both houses. That goes for Duqu and Starman as well--if mandatory intelligence tests were required on this site, neither would ever be able to post here again.
Starman then goes on to write this:
Tell me, Starman, which war did you fight in? Or were you one of the Millions of Traitors in this Nation who stood there going, "Rah! Rah!" as the troops went off to war, and then turned your back when they returned, thereby Betraying them? Shame on you! (Just so you understand, David served in a war. Idiot.)
What I want to know is this: if Hagel has the votes, why do we not presently have Secretary of Defense?
Smbusownerinny 1.27
Actually, I think those running North Korea employ their belligerence for the purpose of extracting aid from the west. They're not as crazy as they would like us to believe but they need to maintain power because they know full well that an overthrow would result in them on trial for numerous crimes against humanity.
As for the Iranians, you may have a point in that they have plenty to lose but never underestimate these religious fanatics and their all consuming hatred for Israel. Consequently, they forge ahead with their nuclear ambitions despite crippling sanctions, and I don't believe any further sanctions will deter them. Besides, I think the west has pretty much run the gamut of sanctions leaving only the obvious as the next step.
McCain, who?
Would somebody please put a muzzle on this clown McStain already?
What part of NO MORE MID EAST WARS doesn't this 'tard get?????
Insane McCain, the one who is so concerned about the inadequate response in Benghazi that he leaves his country without a Secretary of Defense during a time of war over nothing more than his petty little personal grievances. What will he be saying 2 hours from now, tomorrow, the next day? Something different each time, one could easily guess.
Dugu every sitting congressman /senator including MCCain take money for speaking and take money from foreign groups including the JEWISH LOBBY and McCain takes as much as anyone else ..When Hagel was asked by Graham to name one senator who is intimidated by the JEWISH LOBBY Hagel was much to polite ..he should have named McCain and Graham my only concern with Hagel is he didnt want to call his critics out
Maran8th8 - may I suggest you take the blinders off first. We liberal Democrats are not all flower children that turn the other cheek to be slapped again. Some of us fight back and usually win because your right wing neo Nazi agenda is wrong on all fronts. If you want an honest discussion, i'm afraid you've come to the wrong place, pal. And why aren't you sending this message to folks like Ido? Never mind, don't answer because I already know what it is.
Duqu..interesting..you and all republicans are pushing for more info from HAgel on payments received for a speach..or whatever , from a country...yet..I see nothing about what lobbyist for all other countries hand to every politican in washington..nor complaints about all the money from all lobbyist who are paying these politicans to see things their way only. but that I guess is ok..it is just the Obama thing that all republicans are pushing. The real problem is that we have 500 plus politicans on the take in one form or the other..yet no complaints on any of that..only whatever obama suggest gets complaints. As for a budget that the republican party is having huge complaints about and placing all blame on OPbama..I was under the impression that it wasa the sole thing ..a budget, for congress to do alone...did not realize that we had 500 plus elected who are incapable of doing what they made claims that they could do to get elected. and thast is create a budget that neither party has done in years.
McAlzheimer's votes for, then filibusters, then votes for.
.
John McCain, shut up . . you are so irrelevant !
So McSenile finally came to the conclusion all they are doing is churning and muddying the waters? HOW GAUCHE! Next thing he will be rebelling against the RETHUG party line (we can ONLY HOPE!)
McCain concedes: Hagel ‘will probably have the votes necessary’
Senator John, c’mon, even “blind” Freddie could have foreseen that. There are more important things to worry about so don’t waste anymore time on this.
As for Hagel, he may still surprise us; there are many rabbits in the bags of this administration ready to jump out.
This whole dog-and-pony show by McCain, Graham, and Cruz to stall the nomination on the first vote when they all KNOW Hagel will get confirmed is just proof they have nothing but contempt for Obama and have no other agenda than to take him down. They do not care about their constituents or the country. They said this first filibuster was "symbolic". How about a "symbolic" effort to do something constructive like stop the sequester instead of the witch hunts on qualified people. If this was a GOP President getting stonewalled at every turn, you conservatives would be screaming bloody murder.
Spank 'em. That's what the republicans are about. Every chance they get they'll soundly spank the ass of the democrats. Governance? To hell with that. Laws, rules, protocol? Stick it in your ass. What about the people? What gwaddamned people? The middle class and poor? To hell with those "food stamp collecting" unemployed ne'er do wells. Our people are doing just fine.
We all need to get used to this. Democrats can't seem to do a damn thing about it. A helluva lot of people support it too. Whats the good of a new wagon tongue with only 1 mule to hitch it to?
Pigotry,
Since you say McCain speaks from outer-space, does that mean you speak from the trough?
@karl-917535, no I have not been hanging out with Donald Trump. I happen to have this strange belief that we should vet those who are positioned to be elected into the position of the most powerful person in the free world. Part of that vetting process includes whether that person has the requisite intelligence and character for the position.
The only difference between me (and most republicans) and you (and most democrats) is that I also would have demanded it from George W had he not put his records into the public. That you refused to do so calls you out as the political sheep that you truly are, and your blinders put everything you say into question.
Not to mention that my post was in response to starsailing's criticism of republicans because Romney didn't make public every tax record since he was 18 (something that could be spun 1000 different ways by the dems)... but of course had no criticism of King Owebama hiding something as basic as his college transcripts (nothing to spin there... either he did well in school or he didn't...).
Senator McCain, why do you persist in making a fool of yourself? Why don't you stop whining and get to work?
You are shaping your legacy in the Senate with every attack, every complaint, and every day wasted.
When you are in a hole, quit digging!
(Somebody please take his shovel away!!)
OK Folks, McCain is a loser and I mean a loser.. he can't get over losing the 08 election.. and this crime of speaking ill of Hagel is absurd.. McCain got a few senators to side with him against Hagel because he has a deep seated GRUDGE.. Hagel did not like Bush43.. now this adulter puppet arm POS finally realized that he has reached his goal so he'll stop.. this man is a danger to america as it is today.. we need to keep all his dirt in the spotlight for at least a year.. this is an admitted christian holding a grudge, isn't that interesting and I believe he speaks for all the other republican senators.. Cruz needs to get a ball gag for his dirty mouth, I'd sue him for libel break hiss ass now .. Graham is trying to one of the gang now yet yhis closet door remains closed tightly
Duqu -- Watch McCain on Meet the Press, and how he couldn't define what it is people like you think is being covered up in regard to Benghazi. Or in regard to Hagel, or any other POS distractions from rightwing idiots -- like Rubio's reference to Solyndra in is rebuttal (WTF?). Example -- There is NO such thing as "friends of Hamas" -- such an organization does NOT exist!
In the hearings, it was clear that McCain wanted to re-litigate the Iraq invasion. Get over it old man, and the rest of Teapublicans. Watch the documentary TONIGHT with Rachel Maddow on how the whole Iraq SNAFU was the biggest LIE with the biggest death toll.
The unprecedented filibuster of a cabinet appointment has been nothing but a temper tantrum by the GOP/TP in their delusional hopes of a Benghazi scandal. As David Walker points out at the very top, the only scandal is Republican cuts in spending for security over the many years prior to Benghazi. But how dare you, McCain and the rest of the rightwing douchebags pretend there is ANY comparison to the LIES that took us into Iraq. Watch the program tonight, then STFU and stay that way for a good generation or two.
Further to MTP -- YES Carly Fiorina, it IS the Teapublican's to blame. As for the rest of the nation, throw out the obstructionist Teapublican traitors in 2014!
...AND once again I will say, let the Republicants keep digging their own graves. Mid-terms will have the same type casualties the last General provided them.
"McCain concedes: Hagel 'will probably have the votes necessary'"
Finally! Now the Republicans can move on to yet another national concern to drag their feet on.
I hope to hell that I'm watching C-SPAN the day John McCain goes on the rant that sends him over the edge and he sharts himself, while they load him up in the looney wagon.
so Jonny Dumpling wants to know all about the four dead people in Bengazi? well, I would like to know about the couple of thousand dead soldiers in Iraq and the couple of hundred thousand dead Iraqis and the tens of thousands of returning soldiers with injuries who require bake sales to buy them crutches. Hagel can't be Sec. of Defense while Rumsfeld isn't in jail? what?
I do believe that were faux news were to go off the air tomorrow, we wouldn,t get another post from half of the above because they would by then run out of things to say.
No surprise here. Smoke and mirror diversionary tactics from BOTH parties. Leper, GW started the war that BO promised we'd be out of before his first term was over. Meet the renewed boss, same as the old boss.
Great, now Hagel can play tag team with Kerry and Barry and beat up on Israel!
Palestinian officials to US ahead of Obama visit
the Palestinian Authority announced Sunday that two high-ranking officials would fly to Washington to update the administration about the PA’s stance regarding negotiations with Israel.
Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and Mohammed Eshtaya, a member of the PA’s negotiating team, will meet with Kerry, who took office earlier this month, and present him with the Palestinian conditions to resume negotiations with Israel: an end to construction in Jewish settlements, and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

NOT going to happen!
Obama could propose accepting a cure for cancer and the Repuiblicans would say no!
What you are really saying is that you and the Democrats are hypocrites.
Ralph h, you kind of sound like a Jew-hater. Are you?
David Walker, you are SO RIGHT...
Massive failure? Really?
Last I checked Republicans won 32 more house seats than did the Democrats in 2012.
I also seem to remember Republicans gaining in governorships in 2012.
Democrats also only gained 2 seats in the Senate.
I just wouldn't call this a "massive failure".
@Annoyaliberal
The fact that the Democrats gained any seats in the Senate at all is enough to call that cycle a massive Republican failure. Take a look at the seats the Dems were defending in 2012 and tell me they should have ended up with a net two seat gain. If the Republicans were anywhere near competent, they'd have gained multiple Senate seats last year and they could have even flipped the chamber without it being a major shock.
As for the House, don't act like you don't know what gerrymandering is. The Democrats won the raw House vote, it's just mighty hard to transfer that into seats when the lines in most swing states have been drawn to massively favor Republicans. Not that I'm saying the Republicans are the only ones who gerrymander, I'm just saying that pretending as though Republican gerrymanders aren't a major reason why the House is still in their hands is pure wilful partisan ignorance.
Neo cons are always massive failures. Just look at the years 2000-2008. Now that was a massive failure.
Oh, also, you should probably mention that there were only eleven gubernatorial races in 2012 and the majority were completely uncompetitive. The Democrats won every race that was seen as competitive before the election (Washington, Montana, West Virginia, and New Hampshire) and the only GOP gain was in North Carolina, which everyone knew and accepted was going to be a Dem loss from day one.
John McCain thinks we should have stayed in Vietnam and kept killing people that were no threat to us in anyway. After the history is in and everyone knows we had no reason, morally, economically or otherwise to be there McCain is still in denial. I think the Vietnamese probably wish the had never let the callous killer go. Some of the kids McCain help put napalm and agent orange on must remember even if this phony doesn't.
Who gives a damn what a total non thinker that can rationalize anything thinks?
How can a person live in the US over the past few decades and not know that many of our politicians are scared to death of the Israeli lobby. Anyone that doesn't kiss their butt will have millions spent against them in the next election. This gang will do anything and they have great influence on the media and the religious right. We have spent hundreds of billions in cash and weapons on Israel and gained mountains of hatred.
ass for history 2001 to 2007 where ok 2008 to 2016 will go down ass a living hell 23 mil out off work and 47 mil on foodstamps and million on disibilty insurance YOU @!$%#ING THIS GOOD
Realist - too bad you know absolutely NOTHING. George Bush DID NOT release his college transcripts. Someone leaked them. All college transcripts are sealed and Bush had not part in releasing his. Look it up! And, NO OTHER President HAS EVER been asked for or released their transcripts. Get over it!
meant no stead of not!
Yet another incompetent employee is hired by Obama with 100% of the Democrat vote, in step with King Obama. Pretty f**cking sad.
SeekingSanity, I know absolutely NOTHING? Well, here you go... Bush's transcript from Yale - archived on the Bush-Cheney website! I believe that call that GAME... SET... AND MATCH. http://2004.georgewbush.org/bios/yale-transcript.asp
So WHO knows absolutely nothing? You see, the problem with people like you and most liberals is that you just make things up along the way... never mind whether you're right or wrong, as long as it suits your ideology. Disingenuous people like you are EXACTLY why our country is going to hell in a handbasket. But don't worry - not all is completely lost - you'll be ok just as soon as virtual reality becomes more prevalent.
Oh by the way, basically EVERY candidate in recent times was vetted... from military service, to medical records, to SAT scores... and even yes - college transcripts. In fact, Bush had higher GPAs than Kerry, remember???
This relates to Hagel's position in support of Obama's candidacy for President.
Why won't the White House (OBAMA) allow the Congress to read the FBI interviews on Benghzi? What happened to the most transparent administration in history?
Just another broken campaign promise.
I am sure once this administration answers to what actually happened in Benghazi that it was actually a fast and furious in the Middle East I am sure it will go away, but the fact they got caught at their distribution house in the suburbs caught them off guard. SHould have been an embassy but wasn't, shouldn't have been supplying rebels with arms but were. They got caught red handed and sending in help would have confined they shouldn't have been there in the first place, hence validating Owebama getting impeached. THey are right to press the issue and I hope it won't go away until someone is held responsible, but you lefties go ahead and look the other way since it wasn't one of you own aborted children. Shame on you for not wanting to know the truth why Americans were left to die I am sure the military wouldn't leave you there if you were a soldier.
You don't even know me and you insert "your right wing neo Nazi agenda" in your text. I think you made my point for me.
Perhaps so but I don't think NBCNews social media elicit comments with the intent of fostering hate, propaganda, disinformation, and pseudointellectualism within our Nation.
The comments in my post addressed both the extreme right and extreme left. Returning to the US after four years working the the US military and not accessing social media, I am totally shocked at the extremist (right wing and left wing) postings and pure vile put forth. It is very damaging.
I'd be much happier if NBCNews and other sites terminated the comments forum.
@Maran, I agree with regards to NBC. But, you see, when you have a network that was recently polled by only 5% as the most trusted news network (tied for last with the Comedy Channel), that network will do whatever it can to stay relevant. I'm not saying it will be successful, but that's what they are trying to do. And they will print as much one-sided propaganda as it takes to incite reaction.
Granted, we are falling for it by our very presence on this forum... but it's not going to make NBC any more trusted. At this point, my personal view is that NBC is more as a news entertainment network (e.g., Comedy Channel) than a news network. And I've enjoyed this forum more for it.
Those that use Benghazi to try to gain politically are traitors and should be tried, lined up and shot as a lesson to those people that would do such a thing. Benghazi happened, so did countless other deadly attacks on our foreign interest for as far back as we can see. Benghazi is an attack on President Obama, nothing more, nothing less. It is being conducted by those that were birthers that saw that dog wasn't tied up, so they moved on. The fact there was less security, we can look back and see who voted against fully funding security for these missions.
The facts of the Benghazi tragedy are this, four of our heroes that serve this country every day, becuase you can't do it because you are either indifferent or to stupid to, were killed, and we need to look into what happened, so that we can take preventive measures, not to use it as an attack on the president of the United States, because he happens to be a black man in your old white man house. Get over it. He was reelected. Most people are not like you, thank dog.
Maran#, "I'd be much happier if NBCNews and other sites terminated the comments forum." That door swings both ways, that way you don't have to shut it when you leave and its pretty hard to slam. But if you don't like it so much, don't be here. Duh. The fact is, most of use care, even the extremes on both sides. I happen to believe the extreme Lefts agenda is to make this a better country for everyone and the rights idea of a better country is to give it to those at the very top to play with as they please.
Dang that McCain. The REpublicans score their biggest viictory since the 2010 election and he throws it back.
@Johntho: You say that those that use Benghazi to try to gain politically are traitors and should be tried, lined up and shot as a lesson to those people that would do such a thing.
However, I would be happy starting by lining up and shooting those who killed our men in Benghazi. Yet our administration hasn't even seen to it that they are in custody. And the next people I would like to punish are those whose incompetence at every turn enabled Al Qaeda to pull this off. I would like to see a ticker tape parade for those who are holding the incompetent responsible.
You say Benghazi happened, so did countless other deadly attacks on our foreign interest for as far back as we can see.
However, this was an attack on 911... and an attack for which we were forewarned. Do you not see the symbolism in that?
You say that the fact there was less security, we can look back and see who voted against fully funding security for these missions.
However, This had nothing to do with funding for security. That's all the dems want to do - throw money at problems (we are throwing tons of money at our education system, and still our education system sucks). Sometimes the answer isn't to throw money at the problem, but rather to apply some good old-fashioned smarts - smarts that go beyond a Community Organizer. Stevens saw that he was in danger, and asked for help. The other European countries withdrew from their consolates. The US Gov't denied Stevens' requests, without even forwarding Steven's requests to our Secretary of State. That has nothing to do with funding.
You say the facts of the Benghazi tragedy are this, four of our heroes that serve this country every day, becuase you can't do it because you are either indifferent or to stupid to, were killed, and we need to look into what happened, so that we can take preventive measures, not to use it as an attack on the president of the United States, because he happens to be a black man in your old white man house.
However, part of the preventative measures are finding out why our Commander in Chief was asleep at the switch. Owebama ran from this like a chicken during the election... and now his chickens are coming home to roost. Just because the mistakes were made at the highest level does not place them beyond scrutiny. Way to try to play the race card though - calls you out as the racist bigot that you really are. I don't care what color our president is. I do care how competent our president is.
And realist, you would be first in front of the judge in my opinion. This administration isn't any more involved in this then the last administration was involved in 9/11, but you don't hold Bush responsible for that lapse of "security" Why? You know and I know it has nothing to do with Benghazi, it has to do with your hate for Obama. You and those like you need to STFU, you are just an extension of the birthers and most people on both sides of the aisle know it.
Question to the conservatives here demanding answers about Benghazi, please explain what it has to do with the Secretary of Defense? Why did these same republicans fail to demand answers about other attacks on our embassies prior to President Obama's taking office? Why did these same republicans not bother to fix the security problems when Clinton or Bush were in office? In addition, please answer why McCain's questions and animosity toward Chuck Hagel pertaining to the "surge" and Mr. Hagel's difference of opionion on the surge has any relevance to today?
Good grief, it is sad that these same GOP senators failed to challenge any Bush officials on Iraq and now defend their mistakes and failures by blaming Mr. Hagel because he dared to challenge, dared to disagree. Four thousand dead American military, an estimated hundred thousand dead Iraqi civilians and McCain's focus is Hagel's disagreement about the surge. Democrats failed to challenge Bush officials as well but at least they aren't playing petty politics about it.
The GOP spent hours grilling Senator Hagel on Benghazi, Iraq, Israel to name a few yet spent zero time asking questions relevant to the operation of the Department of Defense.
David Walker annoys the righties because he is right (as in 'correct') and they can't come back at him to refute his comments.
They just wish they were half as intelligent, knowledgeable and articulate.
But instead of granting him any approval or admiration, they relentlessly attack him.
Kind of reminds me of how the Republicans treat Barack Obama. Maybe there's a pattern here...
TO: Duqu who wrote:
I always wondered if John McCain received money from a group called "friends of Osama Bin Laden".
See how easy it is to make up crap.
Republicans are full of it.
@Johntho: I know all you dems do are spin inconvient facts into your agenda, but are you really stupid/disingenuous enough to equate 9/11 with Benghazi?
First off, I hold the Clinton and Bush administrations equally culpable for their intelligence failures, but they also both deserve some leniency because the attack was unprecedented. I WILL say that after 9/11, there was not a successful terror attack (oops, manmade catastrophe as you dems might prefer) on Bush's watch after 9/11.
Second, the Owebama Monarchy was MUCH more involved in Benghazi than the Bush admin was involved in 9/11. Had George W received a phone call that morning (or in the preceding days) advising him that terrorists were about to hijack planes and fly them into the World Trade Center, and Bush responded by saying that he was going to fly to Vegas for a fundraiser and can't be bothered - but to let him know how things turn out... and his administration decided to fly unarmed drones to take pictures of the destruction as opposed to sending armed drones to prevent the attack... THEN AND ONLY THEN the two situations would be comparable.
So please go sell your brand of stupid somewhere else.
TO: Realist17 who wrote:
Touche on the "stupid/disingenuous" name calling, right back at ya.
Osama Bin Laden and George "Curveball" Bush knew each other ever since they were small children through their parents who have had oil dealings for many decades and still do, unlike Democrat President Bill Clinton who never met Bin Laden, but did more than anybody else to try to kill Bin Laden long before 9/11, again, unlike GWB who announced AFTER 9/11 that any attempt to kill Bin Laden would be "illegal" because Bin Laden was considered to be a "religious leader".
Republicans "lie and deny" pile-a-schit.
TO: Realist17 who wrote:
Well hell, all Bush needed was the one horrifying attack to take the country to war, and that one did occur on Bush's watch, and was committed by a person Bush had know most all his life. After the 1st terrorist attack on Bush's watch he and Cheney kept Republican followers under a "Terrorist Watch" with "Threat Levels" going up and down all the time like, you know, "fearmongers".
What's also noteworthy, is the fact that as long as Bush was in office, Osama Bin Laden was safe.
Republicans really need to stop trying to set their "Domenstic Terrorist Leaders" next to our REAL Democratic Leaders because there is no comparison, Democrats are Honest, and the GOP is nothing but a bunch of liars and corrupt con-men, and any world leader who has the balz will tell you so straight out just like Vladamir Putin did.
Democrats really need to stop trying to set their "Domenstic Terrorist Leaders" next to our REAL Republican Leaders because there is no comparison, Republicans are Honest, and the DEMS are nothing but a bunch of liars and corrupt con-men, and any world leader who has the balz will tell you so straight out just like Netanyahu did.
See how easy that was to change, when all you do is throw around insults? Try using some real facts. And, by the way, Obama wouldn't have had his SINGLE talking point on terrorism if Bush's policies didn't gather the inteliigence that utlimately led to Bin Laden. And how much venom did you spew about Bush's interrogation policies? Don't hear so much from you when it comes to using drones on American citizens... and even now and American soil as we are now hearing. Where's your outrage?
Classic hypocrite.
TO: Realist17 who wrote:
What a tickle!
If Republicans actually did have any "honest men" you wouldn't have needed my words to say so. When it's true, the truth just pours itself out, unlike Republican lies that take lots and lots of time and creativity to choke out.
Still don't get it? 99% of "Bush's policies" were a pile of crap and bogus lies, and then more lies on top of those.
You have got to be the last one on the planet that doesn't understand that fact.
Read a book why don't you. Start with "Hubris", that might open your tightly closed eyes a little.
TO: Realist17 who wrote:
You just took the truth and changed it into a lie, the same way Republicans always do.
The point is that your argument is completely hollow, if all one has to do is change the names around. Instead of blindly throwing out insults that really only embarrass yourself, why not try using facts and start debating like an educated person?
Realist - don't you think that's just a little ironic considering the other leading news story here?
When he was governor, Sanford disappeared for days, with staff first saying he was hiking the Appalachian Trail before Sanford himself acknowledged he had in fact gone to Argentina to visit his mistress. Sanford was married at the time -- and he used taxpayer money to pay for another trip to South America when he visited his lover.
Find a dictionary, revisit the definition of honest.
Get use to the name calling thing, soon enough it's all you'll have. Demographics are not your friend. The TeaPublican party has worked so hard to purify the party and alienate everyone not a middle-aged white male, you've purified yourselves out of power. And you think your problem is your sales pitch...not so, it's you product.
Why hasn't he already been confirmed? Senate republicans need to go stuff themselves they are utterly useless individuals not one of them has had a good idea in years. Some of these are the same people that supported Bush maybe they should have held up the moron Rumsfeld who was so stupid that he couldn't even do anything right, but then I don't expect intelligience from the GOP anymore or from any conservative the definition of conservative even means that you don't think.
Term limits is the right answer to these clueless GOP senate monkeys...
You know, mandatory intelligence tests would completely clean out the GOP in both houses. It is worth looking into...
Won't work. They are not stupid. They only sound stupid because their constituency is stupid people. Think of the "Evolution and the Big Bang Theory are lies from the pit of hell" guy. (Paul Broun.) He's a medical doctor. There is absolutely no chance he doesn't understand evolution. He just wants to be the Senator from Georgia.
@Pigotry
"Term limits" is a leftover from previous RepubliCon gimmick campaign phrases. It does nothing more than throw out the baby with the bathwater. Statesmen/stateswomen grow from multiple terms. The wisdom that can be gained is too valuable to our country to throw all out because of a few ...and usually they are a gerry-mandered few.
CAMPAIGN AND the ABILITY to VOTE REFORM! If you want to make a difference, forget the old and new RepubliCon gimmicks and demand that your representatives bring real reform to our elections!
And also: pay attention next time the census comes out and who you elect to gerry-mander in your states!
Rubio being the GOP-TP Rising star, fame boy, is this a joke !!!
Rubio looked like a fool going for the kool-aid, he almost fell over !!!
The Republican party has a big problem on their hands if this is their water boy !!!
Marco's response looked more like Pandemonium bottle blues, how funny !!!
AnIndividual #2.4
Well, guilty as charged.
When I was posting #2.1, I also remembered that previous efforts at term limits were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court ... and all Supreme Court rulings are constitutional law.
So then, McCain, why oh why are all of you wasting my time and money (and other taxpayer's) in dragging it out. All of you make the 3 Stooges look sane on TV--yeah, I'm impressed, not favorably, but impressed. I hopw this morning's Arizona Republic headline stating this may be your last term is correct.
McCain concedes -- but only after the right-wing in Congress displays their knee-jerk obsession with filibusters, AGAIN.
More proof that the GOP Tea Party doesn't know how to govern, they only know how to OBSTRUCT.
What's sad is that if Hagel didn't have a party affiliation, and he was appointed by an unknown president and you didn't know the party, there is NO WAY you would think Hagel was qualified. He doesn't even know our policy with respect to Iran's nukes, for crying out loud! And heaven forbid he was still a republican appointed by a republican president - no way in the WORLD you would ever want him confirmed.
That calls out you as the political hacks that you are... and you would rather put your party above what's best for this nation. This is precisely why our country is going down the crapper. I hope Hilary is elected in 2016 and 2020... so that when there is nothing left of our country, half the population is on welfare, the wealthy have taken up citizenship in other countries, and our country is defunct with a debt for which we can't even afford the interest... the only person you will be able to look at is yourself in the mirror. Of course, by then, it will be too late.
the senate has more than overstepped it's boundaries with regard to comformation hears.. the laws are specific and do not allow them this much lattitude.. but they are republicans and they do what they want .. investigations should be started on every one of them cause they are liars cheats adulters bigots and hypocrites.. not one of them voting for their constituents.. of course we have the biggest in history heading the HOUSE.. ask boner how he gets to these bars and then back to his residence
McCain didn’t become ‘Commander in Chief’ so instead he became ‘Obstructionist in Chief’……… McCain is so desperate to keep himself relevant that he'll do or say anything. This over the hill loser should keep his mouth shut all he's is doing is embarrassing himself and his family.......
BigAl Las Vegas#2.11: Agree with your post, except the "embarrassing" part. Dogs will often, openly, whiff each others asses. Too, they'll throw their heads around and nibble and lick their own deals. They'll do this alone, or, in the presence of other dogs, and none of 'em ever seem embarrassed. Fact, some dogs seem to establish themselves with these particulars. I hate it for the dogs, but they've got some real competition from the republicans in the art of ass focus. And the cats? Gwaddamn! They may as well forget it.
How much botox can McCain get -- Yipes, old white guys, retire.
McCain is a prime example of why there should be term limits. He's started to sound as ridiculous as Clint Eastwood. Who can ever forget that embarrassing fiasco?
Pigotry
and the dems all of them.
there all milking the system.
The Republicans are taking their time on this and making fools of themselves. My guess is there are other things they could be concentrating on!
rgsdca1965 - in your dreams. But, we are about to replace MANY Republicans in Congress in 2014! Tick! Tock!
you know, you don't have to agree with Mc cain on his political views, thats ok, but for all of you making disrespectful comments and calling him vile names need to remember he is a vet,and he spent 7 years in a POW camp. and for that he deserves your respect, if you like him or not. and i bet you a suitcase full of cash that every single poster that has disrespected him has NEVER spent a day in the military and probably crapped your pants at the very thought of fighting for your country . bunch of weak kneed pussies. grow up,
Term limits is right Piggy we agree on one little thing finally... but you have to hold your corrupt party to the same standard. There should be term limits in all facets of government that way the both parties can't have a corrupt hold on the lobbyist that keep them all fat and rich...especially the President and Congress 8 years MAX.
Dear Sen McCain, if Hagel is going to be confirmed in the end, why all the drama, queen?
So you're saying we need to give intelligence tests to voters? Who would vote for Republicans, then?
So why all of the drama then? Oh, that's right, gotta throw the whacko teabags a bone every now and then. What a loser McCain has turned out to be.
Drama? McCain is auditioning for his role in Batman as the Penguin after he resigns from the Senate.
Palin has she she is in touch with the people and would help..Smile
well, Coopster
U R right, because McCain has been Badman for some time now. He is prepared to be the Pigwind (pemguin) - the badman in Batman.
Communisit left wing liberal!!! Man you can't hide it!!!
Coopster (3.1):
Please don't insult the Penguin that way! (: Even we, the people, would be better off with the Penguin rather than McCain!!!!!
You don't know how right you are...too bad it will be too late for the obama worshippers when they finally see the nightmare he is creating within this country!!
The democrats are being well rewarded with promises of positions and wealth in "obama's" new government. What they don't realize is that when the "groomers" take over; the "Puppet" "obama, will be gone as well!! Obama is not smart enough to pull off the downfall of this country..he is the popular "puppet" that is a good, likable actor, and that is all!!
And it seems Hagel doesn't want to jump into each and every conflict--not like Chaney, Rummy, and the rest convinced Bush (which probably wasn't hard) to do. Yep, lie, cheat, steal, and beat your breas while giving the Tarzan yell to get us involved. Then laugh your way to be bank with your war profits.
so confirm Hagel and move on - it's not like the Secretary of Defense actually controls the budget given by Congress. Besides, do we REALLY want to be POLICEMAN TO THE WHOLE FUC KING WORLD? (defense is a bloated organization - no more new TOYS)
@Put a fork: No, I don't believe that we need to be the world's policeman. However, I do believe that the person in charge of our defense ought to have clue what our country's position is on Iran's nuclear capabilities, at least during his congressional hearing. But that's just me, I guess...
Realist17, C'mon, are you really that? Do you think Iran would be stupid enough to try to nuke us? Iran looks at nukes the way Israel does, if we have them, we are less likely to be attacked, remember what GW Bush and Cheney did to Iraq, do you think that didn't make Iran starting thinking about deterrence? Following is some info about OUR nuclear potential:
"The U.S. Navy has 18 "Ohio" class nuclear submarines, 14 SSBNs and 4 SSGNs. An SSBN has 24 Trident II ICBMs, each carrying 8 MIRV nuclear warheads, giving each SSBN a total of 192 nukes. An SSGN has 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles which can be equipped with either conventional or nuclear warheads. Therefore, an individual "Ohio" class submarine has the capability to fry any country in the world."
This does not even include our missile cruisers, land based missile silos and our Air Force bomber fleet.
Make no mistake, I have nothing but disgust for the ruling party in Iran, but I don't think they are crazy enough to start something with us, or Israel. If you think Israel doesn't have a retaliation plan already in place in case Iran gets goofy, you're not thinking straight. Israel is ready to take out anyone who comes at them.
I said nothing about Iran's intentions or Israel's capability to retaliate. My statement was simply that our would-be Secretary of Defense did not have a basic understanding of the United States' stance when pertaining to Iran's ability to build the bomb at his congressional hearing. And that to me is troublesome.
Hagel knows exactly what his position is he is being trained by the best right now...Owebama and when he is appointed he will reveal his true agenda and how he truly feels. You can't tell people you hate the food at this restaurant then apply to be a manager?? You tell em yeah I love the food here...get hired...then change the menu.
This objective is far more transparent than the current administration is..by far! All these corrupt bastards lie about their positions on key issues the truth doesn't get people elected anymore. Come on people when have been subjected to this for over four years now we should be pros and seeing BS and manipulation.
Maybe if John "Gomer Pyle" McCain changed his depends, he might be a little less crankier.
Political grandstanding at its worst by a bitter old man. Where is the McCain of earlier years - one for whom I once had great respect.
Can't believe I had considered voting for him at one point in time.
I thought about voting for McCain in 2008, would have voted for him in 2000. All he needed to get my vote in 2008, select Chuck Hagel as VP, but nooooo. McCain is a sore loser, America will be better off once he gets back into his clown car and heads to the clown state of Arizona.
Why don't commenter’s use their real names? Are you afraid to be help accountable? Go to Newsvine help and request a name change, that's what I did, otherwise are you really relevant?
Graduated in 1975 Jake? Thats why. Even if its wrong. Go google Jake Reyna and see what there is to see.
Better yet, check out his MySpace page (lol). If he was even born in 1975, i'll eat my hat.
@Jake Reyna
I am a liberal who lives smackdab in the middle of the South. Use my real name? No thanks! I don't want to get burned out, run off the road, or have one of my neighbors' guns go off accidently while held to my head, mistaking me for a burgular or home invader! And my kids? They would be bullied literally to death! geez ....The Suthern Nutters are very real...more real than anything RepubliCons could scare them with!
You are welcomed to move down here and use your real name though!
AnIndividual, same here. They are crazy! Don't forget fired from your job. And the cops don't know a thing about how your house caught on fire...
The establishment Repubs are weak. Why not stand up for what you believe? Hagel is a bad choice. Now elaborate to the American people why...are you really Dems in Repub clothing?
real name? NAH - anonymity is much more efficient, better. I'll admit to being a left coaster, intelligent, scientist - but my real name would open me up to a lot of spam (and it's BAD ENOUGH AS IT IS NOW)
oh, CAZ - you have a suggestion? - merely saying "nope, no good" is no better than the RETHUGs (or was that your rebuttal to the RETHUGs? - it's a bit cryptic)
AnIndividual
I agree with your post. Any Democrat both liberal or progressive living in the south is in danger. Right wing Republicans are like rabid dogs willing to take away the rights of others to achieve their sick and twisted goals......... My advice change is to your voter registration to Independent that way your chances of be harassed by these fascist pigs will be drastically reduced.
It's sad that in America those that stand up for equality and justice have to worry about the criminal element created by the Republican/Tea Party......... Just remember these creeps are not real Americans they're just thugs pretending to be real Americans......
@big al and an individual
Stop the b.s. I've lived in the deep south my entire life and have never heard of anyone being in danger because of a party affiliation. People like you are the danger.
I'm a liberal in Chicago but don't care to have the crazies on here possibly trying to wreck my career. Had too many send hate filled e-mails then others asking to sit down over drinks and talk. No thank you - I think it's a little dangerous when you read some of the people who post.
I keep my circle of friends here very discreet.
@bigredmch
Of course you haven't, you are not a liberal.
I guess because you have never heard of it means it doesn't exist. Yep! You're a Suthernor and probably a lily-white who lives in the Southern Denial Bubble!
The Republicans do an amazing job of "cudgelling" themselves. They need no assistance from anyone or anywhere else. Their obstructionist positions and policies from the day Obama was first lected, never mind even in office, have been a disgrace to this country and bordering on treason. Thankfully, most people now see them for what they truly are. I never thought I would yearn for the days of true conservatism, rather than radical reactionary retrogresses, but that time has come for the sake of the country.
@McTash,
You are correct. The only way the GOP will win the White House, and possibly the Senate is to rig the voting machines, and cage enough voters. They have plenty of money behind them right now. But this upcoming election they need to be voted into the minority.
They, and their base, are so low informed as to how much they have hurt our country since 1991. Yes, the GOP had some help by Clinton, but mostly it was done by the GOP themselves. And people are realizing it, no matter how much the low informed base deny's it.
Then their silly war on women, which they try to deny, but look at the laws the red controlled states have passed tells the real truth. And that they can try to deny, but it shows how much they lie. Then insulting all the minorities, and then expecting those same people to vote for their flip flopper Mitt? Wow, they don't realize that everyone is not as low informed as their own base is.
And who is going to be their next canadidate for POTUS? Another bible thumper like Santorum, or maybe Newt again? Mitt has been handed his dinner twice now, doubt if he wants a third helping. Maybe Gov Perry is stupid enough to try again, or maybe the ineffecient Paul?
No matter who they put up, it will be another clown show. I hope they grow more popcorn for the upcoming elections, as it will be a joke on the GOP side.
And that is a shame, as the GOP does have a few good ideas that might help our country. But those good ideas are few and far between their bad ideas that help the top 2% and screws the rest of us.
Historically, the only way the RepubliCon PartyOverCountry has ever won has been to cheat. The current RepubliCon PartyOverCountry is a shell for Corporate Interests which manipulates the gullible and less-educated through f-e-a-r! Their middle men specialize in marketing which the gullible fall for every time. Today's RepubliCon PartyOverCountry is trying to destroy our government. They are not patriots.
If Moderate Republicans are not willing to step in and save their party, why should anyone vote for any more Republicans anyway?
A new sane conservative party needs to be formed. Our country needs at least 2 healthy political parties which work together and present a balanced approach to governing.
what is missing is a retreat from the "leadership" of the RETHUGs being seriously reichwingnutreligionazis. Since they have moved to the right of the BIRCHERS, they can expect NO SUPPORT from ME.
I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT THERE ARE ANY "MODERATE" Republicans out there - or at least they seem to be in "duck and cover" mode. Get with the program folks - merely and continuously saying NO NO NO is a prescription for OBSOLESCENCE. Throw out the idiots and renounce the grover pledge - IF we don't get BOTH revenue and spending under control, we are DOOMED as the world's economic leader.
WE MUST DEAL WITH THE DEBT (like it or NOT - the DEBT is that sword of Damocles hanging over our collective heads - we need to increase revenues and decrease spending and apply the excess "revenue" to the DEBT - return to the tax rates that Clinton had. Once we get the debt down to a "manageable" level, THEN we can talk about cutting taxes )
SallyAnn
"The only way the GOP will win the White House, and possibly the Senate is to rig the voting machines"
The GOP scumbags are already doing that and anything else they can come up with to destroy our democracy. The NEW Republican/Tea Party does not believe in democracy what they really pushing us towards is corporate dictatorship.
I love that they now are going gaga over Dr. Carson. Let's see - a brain surgeon who really has done nothing else but now he's the new savior of the Republican party. They believe if they run a black man all minorities will rush to vote Republican. Reminds me of them running Palin because they believed women were stupid and would vote for any woman - no matter how ridiculous! Will they EVER learn????
Yeah, clearly this country would be MUCH better off with an unproven, unvetted, extremist community organizer. At least Dr. Carson was successful in a real career that involved both the private sector and healthcare, so he would at least base his decisions on experience as opposed to our beloved current armchair quarterback-in-chief.
Realist says:
And he is right!
...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.
Jan 3, 2013 - Under President Obama's leadership, the economy has added private sector jobs for 34 straight months. During this span, 5.8 million private sector jobs have been created.

Dec 29, 2008 U.S. corporate earnings probably fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.
May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.
I think the more important question is why McCain thinks he is still relevant??
Because he has nothing left. This is what happens when we allow Congress to retire on the public dole.
WilliamofRites: if you believe McCain is irrelevent, why do you feel compelled to even comment about it?
Juanita. It's called free speech.
Coopster: as I expected; you totally missed my point.
"I think the more important question is why McCain thinks he is still relevant??"
He’s not relevant -- not at all. He’s evolved into nothing more than a bitter, nasty, vile, angry old mad who cannot got over the fact that he lost in 2008. I supported him in 2000, sent him money and even knocked on doors for him. But it's now 12 years later and it’s way past time for him to go.
I tend to refer to him as McSenile (not without cause). He showed that senility a little over 4 years ago when he chose Failin' Palin as his running mate - that's when I lost any and all confidence in the man.
Instead of worrying about governing our country, John McCain and the Republicans are worrying about the next election....and we're paying for it, in more ways than one............
doncha think? (agree whole heartedly)
Enough votes.
What fiscal cliff??
the one that's still there - just that the approach has been DELAYED.
Give it time - the debt limit approaches MERCILESSLY. That's #1 TRIGGER, sequestration is #2 TRIGGER...
the crazy has come out of this episode..but wait until next week on all my crazy..or all my generals..soon sound bites...hagel pals around with terrorist..Obama hires this man and look what happens Muslim brotherhood...we told you only on fox news????but have no truth to back it up..only on fox news
Think Obama is not happy!
yes ..he is....let the tea nuts keep throwing sh-it at the fan...trying to make Obama a one term....for 4 years the tea nuts lied against thy neighbor..yes false prophets of the tea party...and you give us more...like some Angil will appear...Glenn Beck..to save the day again..with his lies
The government is bad...because i work here..McCain
I know the Republicans have to pander to their "base". But, nurturing the hate, ignorance, and divisiveness of the Tea Party has weaken the GOP in he eyes of the majority of Americans. In McCain's own words: "beat up Republicans to get an advantage in the next election?".... Nope, Obama is NOT beating up Republicans. They are doing that to themselves!
Roadkill I agree with you completely but Hagel just doesn't have it! Why would you want this guy. Give me something and I will consider!
If he doesn't "have it," why are only a few obstinate Republican senators blocking his confirmation? Please expound.
Did you see, hear the Hearings? Not sharp and looked asleep! I think the fact that he went against Bush and Cheney gives him some chance with me. But dam get or become alive instead of innate!
Maybe if Hagel would have called McCain, Graham and company a bunch of friggin' idiots bent on revenge against the POTUS that nominated him, you would consider that awake enough? Asking him questions about Benghazi, for which he had nothing to do with, is not relevant and obviously shows the intent of the questioners. The whole country saw that. Why didn't you?
Did Hagel answer the questions asked? Is it his responsibility to answer unasked "witch hunt questions"?
The OFFICIAL questions are the ones that matter - not the innuendo (that's Italian for "sex", by the way)
What did Hagel show in the hearings that would make you think he was qualified..anyone????
he was against Bush and Cheney ..fair enough
Best point yet! I'll concede that! Just have to think he is not sharp but your point deserves a lot of consideration. thanks!
he was against the false Prophets...Bush and Cheney..
HE WAS AGAINST THE IRAQ WAR. He called it right on israel having too much influence.
OK I agree another good point! Thanks
as opposed to being a "private imbecile in chief?" or should that be "Private Moron in Chief"?
hey McCain you change who you once were a moderate....so have a lot of you republicans...you have forgot where you came from..even your daughter..is better than you
Agree with you. always wants another war! No compassion for our kids!
what - you can't forget the beach boys? "Bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb IRAN"?
Why has the press let Menendez off the hook when the FBI has moved the investigation to NJ???
you can not ruin someone who you think is guilty...let it play out then..when and if it is true ..they Will be on it like a fat kid on a cup cake...fox news seems to jump to soon and wants others to follow
Good point!
Your comments are great, elvis payne!!!!!!
Keep'm coming!!!!
besides, IF he did something in Dominican Republic, it isn't exactly a US crime - it's CERTAINLY not worthy of "felony" prosecution
Politics and politicians have very long memories. There will be another Republican president. One or more of his, or her, cabinet appointments will be filibustered. Remember, Republicans, you started it!
I wish someone would have fillabustered some of bush's appointments especially to the supreme court.
so let 'em croak - the net result is the same. maybe the NEXT Dem president in 2016 (based on RETHUG missteps they only keep digging a deeper hole) can appoint another "somewhat more liberal SCOTUS juror"
It's time for John McCain to retire along with Lindsey Graham. As for Ted Cruz, the latest Joe McCarthy imitator, he needs to go back to Texas and stay there. I cannot believe that, in this day and age, we have people who still make accusations simply by innuendo. I was a child when I watched the news and the McCarthy hearings. I knew it was wrong then and it is wrong today. Shame on the Republican Party and shame on John McCain for treating a former colleague and friend that way.
innuendo is Italian for SEX - Cruz doesn't have a brain - or at least he doesn't appear to USE what he has...
DO WE EVEN have a congress anymore? After Bush and now this president I suggest we have a house of debate. Congress has been disolved!
Chuck another Valid point!
nah - it's still there - just reduced to the level of a bunch of kindergarteners with the "DID NOT...DID TOO" & "I'LL TAKE MY BALL AND GO HOME " mentality
Meet the press just no hard questions! Fiscal cliff answers
David Gregory is a Zionist. His job is to change the discourse on Hagel, from Israel not wanting him, to the Republicans just don't like him for various reasons. It is the Zionist media, changing the narrative, so people will not be so cognisant that we are being controlled by the supporters of Israel.
"Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will
do that . .. I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about
American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the
Americans know it."
Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, October 3, 2001, to
Shimon Peres, as reported on Kol Yisrael radio.
The one and only reason his candidacy is being held up, is opposition from the neocons and Israel, which is almost one and the same. The neocons are pushing hard for another war.
You use to control America as you once controlled Germany.
The Evangelicals of today...have turn away from once what they believe in...now they speak like a dragon in Gods name...look at the tea party
The Repugs are not understanding that everything they do is making them more unpopular...First we had that clown show called the primaries....then we had the most incompetent campaign in recent history and now we have the idiot's delight in Congress and the Senate....I keep wondering who they're trying to impress and if someone who they might respect will tell them it isn't working. McCain has actually moved from presidential candidate to idiot's delight in only four short years.
Do you think Obama will get the revenue increase??
I hope so we need it
and NOT increase spending...
Did Rubio impress you??
no..it was like looking at my clock...when the dial goes around...i see it again
Yes. I got all choked up and needed a drink of water.
Rubio is an idiot. Anyone who claims not to know how old the Earth is is a moron who needs their brain checked the scientific evidence is overwhelming I don't care what the bible says the science proves the people claiming the earth is only thousands of years old wrong.
Smile! I just wish the Republicans would get a Regan type. Get a real person even if we don't agree we could respect!
No!
Rubio is a rising star in the GOP; Best wishes to the GOP in diversifying its base.
Some people are a bit shallow, trying to make something out of the water-drinking episode...Focus on real issues, please - if we liberals want to be credible.
yes, I like Rubio's conservative ideas...he's not afraid to speak up, even though he knows that he'll be criticized for something as mundane as taking a drink of water...I hope more and more conservatives will speak up...also, I was so impressed with the speech that Dr. Benjamin Carson made at the National Prayer Breakfast recently. Bravo!
"Did Rubio impress you??"
NO!!! He was nothing more than Mitt Romney with a different face. It was the same old, same old, same old Republicanism we’ve been listening to for the last 32 years --- supply side economics and more deregulation.
at least he could have been sipping a BEER - then we would have known the basis for his BULLS HIT
Rubio is a token.
I think we do know! Many illegal substances make one quite thirsty.
Dr . Carson is the new joke of the Republican party. They now think they can run him for President (no experience in ANYTHING but brain surgery) but he's black so they are sure minorities will flock to vote for him. Kinda like picking Sarah Palin because they were SURE women would be stupid and vote for just any woman! The joke that is the Republican Party just goes on and on and ......
Hey SeekingSanity, since you didn't respond above, I will show you again:
I know absolutely NOTHING, you say? Well, here you go... Bush's transcript from Yale - archived on the Bush-Cheney website! http://2004.georgewbush.org/bios/yale-transcript.asp
I believe that call that GAME... SET... AND MATCH.
Oh by the way, basically EVERY candidate in recent times was vetted... from military service, to medical records, to SAT scores... and even yes - college transcripts. In fact, Bush had higher GPAs than Kerry, remember???
You see, the problem with people like you and most liberals is that you just make things up along the way... never mind whether you're right or wrong, as long as it suits your ideology. Disingenuous people like you are EXACTLY why our country is going to hell in a handbasket. And people like you won't stop until our country has become completely marginalized and defunct.
But don't worry - not all is completely lost in your world - you'll be ok just as soon as virtual reality becomes more prevalent.
The tea party is wall street...not Joe the plumber.....can a poor person have that much power???think people
