Report of immigration draft plan brings White House statement

Republican Senator Marco Rubio and others in the GOP criticizing the president for crafting immigration plan with no bipartisan input, NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

The White House is not directly commenting on a newspaper report that the administration is considering a path for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent U.S. residents within eight years.

USA Today said it obtained a draft of a White House immigration plan that contained the proposal.

The White House wouldn’t comment Saturday night directly on the USA Today report but released this statement:

“The President has made clear the principles upon which he believes any commonsense immigration reform effort should be based. We continue to work in support of a bipartisan effort, and while the President has made clear he will move forward if Congress fails to act, progress continues to be made and the administration has not prepared a final bill to submit.”

Since his re-election – which got a boost from Hispanic voters -- President Barack Obama has renewed his push for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration policy, including the topic in his inaugural address and State of the Union speech and making a trip to Nevada last month to highlight the issue.

And there’s been some progress in the Senate: A bipartisan group of senators announced in late January that they had agreed on goals for a major rewrite of immigration laws. Those include creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who are here already and creating a system to ensure that employers don’t hire illegal immigrants.

But reaction to the USA Today report by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., points to the difficulty in passing any package. Rubio issued a statement Saturday saying that if the president's eventual proposal follows the draft described by USA Today, it "would be dead on arrival in Congress."

NBC News' Ali Weinberg contributed to this report.

Hidden cameras reveal Mexican drug and immigrant smugglers crossing the U.S. border and traveling miles north into the country, NBC's Mark Potter reports.

A comprehensive immigration reform is long overdue. President Obama is pushing for the right move.

The last time such a reform was done by GOP hero Reagan, so the Republicans are not really opposed to such an approach. During GW Bush, some key Democratic leaders were opposed to Bush's plan for a narrower-scoped reform that promoted the idea of a work permit.

But now, it's time for a more comprehensive approach which has been supported by both Democrats and Republicans, such as Lindsey Graham and John McCain. But McCain declared his opposition in 2010 to save his own arse when challenged by a Tea Party primary opponent.

Let's get it done.

FORWARD....

P.S.: If we want to create jobs in America, we must welcome foreign-born innovators.

According to CNN news (November 2011)

Inviting immigrants in to create jobs may seem counterintuitive, but the facts are clear. Immigrant-led innovation is key to creating U.S. jobs. According to statistics from Partnership for a New American Economy, 40% of Fortune 500 companies were created by immigrants or their children. Further, between 1995 and 2005, 25% of high-tech startups in the United States had at least one immigrant founder, and these companies have created more than 450,000 jobs.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses of immigrant entrepreneurs yearning to breathe free": This is the message we need Lady Liberty to shine forth into the world.

It was wrong during the Reagan and Bush years and it is wrong now. But it does prove an interesting point, both neocons and liberals willing to sell out the American people for their own benefit.

Pigotry, what about the countless billions of tax dollars being spent on education, healthcare, entitlement handouts, and criminal justice for illegals? I do agree that a grand deportation sceme simply isn't practical. The key focus of government should be securing our borders and ensuring that illegals do not receive a dime of taxpayer funded services or entitlements.

#1.1 cont.:

"We want your talent" should be our slogan.

Come and build your businesses in the United States. Don't move to Bangalore or Shanghai or Dubai or Moscow. Don't go to Istanbul or Shenzhen or Sao Paulo when we need you in the emerging markets of our own country in places like Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland.

The point is that immigrant entrepreneurs create jobs, and our top priority should be to foster innovation ecosystems at home.

China and India are producing far more emigrants and immigrants. China in particular does not even have a path to citizenship for foreigners. And the EU is in shambles partially thanks to decades of open borders and big government handout programs for immigrants. But thanks for proving my point.

The problem of undocumented immigrants can be solved by making it easier for them to immigrate legally. Pres. Obama's reform is for this.

In 2007, scholars Ruben Rumbaut and Walter Ewing investigated the issue for the Immigration Policy Center and concluded that "if immigrants suddenly disappeared and the country became immigrant-free (and illegal-immigrant free), crime rates would likely increase."

The truth is, the undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than regular Americans. Most come here to work, and in their desire to stay, they are generally afraid to do anything that might draw the attention of armed people wearing badges.

We already have laws that make it illegal to hire illegals! There is also ways of becoming legal citizens in this country! Why do we need new laws? This country waste more money defending and bickering over what laws mean than any country I've heard of. Most countries enforce those laws that are written and only change after the laws have been changed. Here we change laws if they don't suit you while the law is still in affect. So it seems to me whether laws are changed or kept the same no one will enforce them. It's truly sad our own President is telling our law enforcement not to enforce the laws we have on the books. Now that Romney is out of the picture maybe the Republican's will find someone that that will work for American's.

Pigidiotry - where to start...

1) We already allow in over 1 million legal immigrants per year. When you factor in specialty visas it is close to 2M each and every year. For context that is more immigration that is allowed in the rest of the countries of the world combined. Open borders will not fix any problems but destroy what is left of the middle class.

2) Your 'scholars' were paid by the open border lobby to fudge numbers. Recent immigrants are on welfare at double the rate of previous immigrants and are filling our jails at much higher percentages than their population levels. Your 'facts' are plain lies.

3) Wow, a couple 'immigrant' success stories. Ignore the millions on welfare and at the bottom of the economic ladder, their wage suppression effects. Not very smart.

Any type of plan that requires the current ILLEGAL immigrants to pay back taxes, etc., etc., just isn't going to happen.

They won't bother and most of them can't do what is required anyway...they are already living off of our welfare system and you expect them to pay back taxes, learn ENGLISH (I see this as a major stumbling block, they already don't care enough to learn the language anyway--there are thousands of them that have been here for years illegally and still can't speak a word of English).

All this is going to do is put an immigration reform bill on the books, you'll get all these illegals to register for it and then it will languish and not have enough people to track those on it to make sure they meet the requirements in the time allotted or they are deported.

All this will do is say, see we passed a bill - now vote for us.

But I do have one interesting question - the illegal immigrant community (those hollering the loudest appear to be Mexican) keep talking about we won't vote for you, etc., and since they are illegal, they're not allowed to vote anyway so who would care?

BECAUSE - they are voting illegally and we know it.

Pigidiot,

Latest figures confirm every 'illegal' alien costs about taxpayers $20,000 more than they contribute.

I suppose we could work something out with the IRS if any illegal alien wants to up to the window and register and pay a fine of $20,000 per year for eight (8) years, as the President suggest, to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

And re-establish the American birthright as a person born of two U.S. citizen parents.

The problem of undocumented immigrants can be solved by making it easier for them to immigrate legally. Pres. Obama's reform is for this.

The reason it is so difficult to immigrate here Legally is because the immigration courts are overwhelmed dealing with the 12 Million Illegal immigrants in this country.

If you're going to post "facts," please cite your sources.

According to the census bureau, and checked by PolitiFact:

"less than 1 percent of illegal-immigrant-headed households included anyone receiving direct government cash assistance, such as Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or state-run cash aid. This is not surprising: Illegal immigrants are generally barred from receiving such payments.

They also pay into Social Security, more than they will ever collect, and pay state/local/federal taxes, taken out of their paychecks. This data is easily located via Google, for anyone who actually cafe about FACTS.

Most of the undocumented have been here for decades.

The cost of deporting 11+ million people would be prohibitive, in addition to sending floods of millions of kids - who are Americans by birth - into the foster-care system.

Maybe they shouldn't have come here, but we have to deal with the reality of NOW. And the best solution for everyone concerned, for our country, is an earned pathway to citizenship.

If you can't find any compassion in your heart for the adults, please try thinking about the children involved.

Pigotry...you are thinking that most illegals are trained in some sort of skill other than smuggling themselves here. Most don't speak the English language, have any sponsor to take care of them, nor checked for diseases or drug addiction, left Mexico for criminal reasons, and most importantly will be dependent on the state or federal government. In your LaLa Land where you come from I am sure you sponsor all kinds if immigrants, that benefit society. It just so happens now when the current administration is spending the US in oblivion you want them to incur even more debt and responsibility all in the name of bought votes!

I suggest you start working harder so you can contribute more to make these dreams of YOURS a reality. I am also sure you already contribute more in taxes by giving more than is due by the government too. You are really far out there just like your progressives astronauts buddies. If you focused on not killing babies you have your own work force born and bred here.

This is the reality of an illegal immigrant in California. They come here find employment, work under the table, live in housing that supports far to many people than capable of, increase crime out of desperation, join gangs for protection and to make a living and send money back to families in Mexico. All the while treating the candy store like a dump that Mexico is.

If you are supporting immigration from other parts of the world I would agree would need educated immigrants whom WANT to be American citizens, who can contribute and have done it through the legal channels. You are supporting uneducated criminals who will ultimately be parasites of the system.

Go build YOUR utopian society somewhere else. I like Romney's plan of making it so hard they will want to leave on their own, leaving the door wide open for those that earn the opportunity and more important will contribute to our society rather than be a drain on it. You views are untested and are just media regurgitated back to the people...go buy someone else's vote you manipulator!

the "Native" Americans were immigrants too, from southeast asia, they just got here before the British, French, and Spanish colonized it. thankfully the British did what they did too, because if they did not colonize the land that WE took from the British, who would have stopped the Nazi's and the Japanese in WW2? if not for America, you would have no free place to spew your liberal party line BS. First of all, Mexico has strictor immigration laws than we do and you want US to ease ours even more?

Second of all, The Constitution and Bill of Rights do NOT give the President the power to make laws. They SPECIFICALLY give that power ONLY to Congress. He then and only then approve or disapprove what Congress gives him. Then THEY can go back if they want and over-right his veto if they get enough votes to do so. Executive Orders are NOT legal laws. It does not matter what party the president is in.

The problem is some people who are trying to claim immigration is good are lumping together all of the immigrants, to make their point. That makes immigration seem great when you combine Mexican immigration with all of the other countries. The simple truth is there is VERY little innovation and job creation by Mexican immigrants, especially compared to the amount of immigrants. Some of these people come here to work, but many many more just come here to live off our system and get a free ride. Don't believe me? EVERY single one of them in line at the grocery store pulls out their welfare card like a badge of honor where I live. I truly wish I were exaggerating, but I'm not. What's worse are these are illegals, they aren't even actual citizens. Not to mention our Jail is full with quite literally 80% Mexicans, again, not making this up. I'm sorry but all this talk about immigration being good is only true if you don't include most Mexicans. They cost the American taxpayers a fortune with all of their demands and special "needs"and don't think twice about it, in fact they seem quite proud of it. And they have the nerve to claim that some of the states were theirs to begin with are stupid, then there would just be more of Mexico that they would still want to immigrate from and less states to immigrate to, because they would have ruined those states too. They are the only immigrants that try to force us to adopt their culture instead of the other way around. And the problem their culture obviously isn't good otherwise Mexico would be in better shape. Say what you will but these are indisputable facts where I live... :(

Rubio wants to call an immigration bill DOA? Next step, end Cuban refugee status - and pin it squarely on his attitude as he is a GOP wannabe ... see what kind of "hispanic vote" he gets with that. All the Ricky Ricardos of the world have to do is touch our shore for a "home free pass" as a refugee from, "shudder", those durn commies. Lift the embargo on Cuba, it's asinine, and end the Cuban free pass to citizenship.
Volunteering with kids, I told a little girl - a US Citizen - that her mom will probably be able to get a path to citizenship in about 2 years. Only the mother is undocumented, she is just a housewife, to a legal worker, and mother to 2 kids who are US Citizens. (Oh, the guy works at a car wash, in case anyone just really wants such a job - plenty of openings, all over SoCal, for car washes - but you'll barely get by, crammed into a little apartment.)
Unite families, and stop exploitation of illegal workers (keeps down wages of legal workers) - either jail their self serving American employers, or get them an easier way to qualify for a legal worker permit.
I hope President Obama fixes this, either with the GOP or without them - I could care less - just fix it. Cali has a Dream Act, I want to see one on a Federal level, stat.

The trouble is democrats don't want to listen to what the people want. They want to be re-elected next year and the year after that. President Obama knows that he only has 2 terms so in retrospect, his Presidency is fast becoming a dictatorship. I have already e-mailed my Senators and everyone on this Newsvine should do the same. I think it is a shame when people have been waiting 12 or more years to get into the country (such as my relatives) and the President thinks he can have illegals become permanent residents in only 8 years.

Such a slap in the face to anyone who has been patiently waiting in line.

Just another way to prove the point that Democrats don't really care about rights, so long as you go along with their ideals. If this was a Republican President who decided to bypass the laws, so many people would be outraged.

So where is the outrage now? Apparently Democrats who don't want this, aren't speaking out enough.

Judge: Immigration Agents Suing Obama Can Move Forward

A federal judge ruled that nearly a dozen federal immigration agents can move forward with their lawsuit against their own bosses and even President Obama over change in enforcement policy that the agents argue prevent them from doing their jobs.

Federal Judge Reed O'Conner ruled on Friday Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents' case has legal merit. They argue their bosses essentially have forced them to look the other way and not enforce the law -- thus overstepping Congress by changing laws through directives rather than legislation.

The state of Mississippi joined the lawsuit against the administration but judge O'Conner dismissed the state from the lawsuit on Friday in the 35-page opinion.

The agents filed the lawsuit in October against the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, and ICE Director John Morton, to ask the courts to overturn last year's directive by Obama to suspend deportation proceedings and offer temporary work authorization to some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.

American leaders (including O) are supposed to be representing the best interests of AMERICAN CITIZENS and LEGAL IMMIGRANTS rather than tripping over each other to sell out the American worker (whose opportunities and rights are being devastated-- hitting poorer and working class Americans the hardst and disproportionately impacting minorities). Instead, the fools in office now (namely O, for whom I voted in '08 but not in '12) are engaging in this pandering display in favor of the ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS, their offspring, and their insufferable advocates!

Pledging rewards and special treatment incident to immigration lawbreaking now is the WORST WAY to demonstrate a commitment to enforce our immigration laws in the future. Reagan's 1986 Amnesty is Exhibit A, evidencing the fact that rewarding ILLEGALITY only serves to further incentivize MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS MORE INSTANCES OF LAWBREAKING IN THE FUTURE? Indeed, a commitment to reward lawbreaking will only serve to engender more lawbreaking in the future and that will be followed by demands for special treatment for that lawbreaking-- JUST LIKE NOW!

The ONLY thing that is "broken" is our leaders' commitment to enforce the very laws they are legally duty-bound to enforce! We permit 1 Million LEGAL immigrants into this country each year (more than all other countries combined). The issue is NOT whether we choose immigration vs. no immigration. The correct issue IS whether the lawbreakers (the ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS) will be rewarded and granted special treatment for their lawbreaking!

A GOVERNMENT WHICH REFUSES TO ENFORCE ITS OWN LAWS IS INTOLERABLE!

most of the people i have known to be illegals they cant even speak spanish; true is in center america, the well educated stays there and wants nothing to do with the US. only the bottom of the poverty levels come here looking for a better place and work; many send most their earnings down to help family they left behind or to bring them illegally since there is no other ways; majority are good hard workers but without a chance to progress because own culturals believes and patterns; we need them for the basic jobs so called middle class americans would never touch but at the same token many fall on welfare; have childrens whom then are American citizens and have to live on welfare because of it and because their parents are under prepared for this sociaty; if path to legal immigration is granted; more illegals replace them later; if path is not granted the number will grow out of proportions and nothing will change; only the ones who have been criminals should be deported; to come crossing illegally to a more prosperous country with intentions to work should never be criminal; i know there are laws but this nation is made precicely by immigrants from everywhere; lets stay the course and help to those who can be helped; there are many and it is not all of them.

Obama is interested in those 11 millions of illegals for pure political reasons, not because he cares a bit; he will use them in future well planned agendas like gun control and whatever his preparing; just like he have used the spanish community apealing to its sheer ignorance to get himself re elected.

inmigrants will be greatful with the democrats and in turn will keep voting that ticket in up coming elections; this administration popularity is far worst than what the media shows and what regular folks believe to the main stream media; obama have said it himself mocking the Americans as ignorants.

Nothing this guy says is true but he says his lies over and over again so many times that i am sure he does believes in them with heart and mind; he feels hes got a job to do; to transform, to change america and for that he needs illiterates to fool with; the illegal immigration is perfect for this and his new pet project. obama's administration cant fix the economy completely but wants to fix and reform immigration? right!!

KC (#1.16) YOU ARE INCORRECT. ILLEGALS (largely poor and uneducated) consume far more in taxpayer resources than they pay in taxes: On January 8, 2013, NBC.com posted an article about how ILLEGALS are devastating healthcare resources (here is an excerpt, and there are many others):

. . . And since about two-thirds of illegal immigrants live in just eight states, those areas will have a disproportionate share of the uninsured to care for.

In communities "where the number of undocumented immigrants is greatest, the strain has reached the breaking point," Rich Umbdenstock, president of the American Hospital Association, wrote last year in a letter to Obama, asking him to keep in mind the uncompensated care hospitals gave to that group. "In response, many hospitals have had to curtail services, delay implementing services, or close beds."

The federal government has offered to expand Medicaid, but states must decide whether to take the deal. And in some of those eight states — including Texas, Florida and New Jersey — hospitals are scrambling to determine whether they will still have enough money to treat the remaining uninsured.

Without a Medicaid expansion, the influx of new patients and the looming cuts in federal funding could inflict "a double whammy" in Texas, said David Lopez, CEO of the Harris Health System in Houston, which spends 10 to 15 percent of its $1.2 billion annual budget to care for illegal immigrants.

Realistically, taxpayers are already paying for some of the treatment provided to illegal immigrants because hospitals are required by law to stabilize and treat any patients that arrive in an emergency room, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to cover the costs typically comes from federal, state and local taxes.

A solid accounting of money spent treating illegal immigrants is elusive because most hospitals do not ask for immigration status. But some states have tried.

California, which is home to the nation's largest population of illegal immigrants, spent an estimated $1.2 billion last year through Medicaid to care for 822,500 illegal immigrants.

The New Jersey Hospital Association in 2010 estimated that it cost between $600 million and $650 million annually to treat 550,000 illegal immigrants.

And in Texas, a 2010 analysis by the Health and Human Services Commission found that the agency had provided $96 million in benefits to illegal immigrants, up from $81 million two years earlier. The state's public hospital districts spent an additional $717 million in uncompensated care to treat that population.

If large states such as Florida and Texas make good on their intention to forgo federal money to expand Medicaid, the decision "basically eviscerates" the effects of the health care overhaul in those areas because of "who lives there and what they're eligible for," said Lisa Clemans-Cope, a senior researcher at the Urban Institute. . . .

Pigotry..............the CNN article that says 40% of jobs have been created by immigrants is lopsided. Of course 40% are created by immigranst we are a nation of immigrants. LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. The immigrants that are being debated right now however are illegals. For the most part uneducated and most likely not going to creat jobs but simply work and send money back to mexico to send more to this country. We have laws to protect this country from the influx of too many but thousands break those laws each year. We should not allow anyone to become a citizen who is here illegally. If I break into a neighbors home I go to jail. If these illegals break into our country the are to be rewarded? It is wrong. the kids born here are citizens and should be left here if the parents choose either with legals or in custody of the government but the illegal parents should be sent back and then put on a fast forward list to qualify for legal entry.

Hi,

First I believe that if Osama Obama does push Amnesty through he should be impeached for not following the laws of the nation that are already in place. As far as the illegal immigrants, we should arrest all 10 - 20 million of them, put them in prison, and work them in change gangs like their country would. We should also make a law that at least one parent has to be an American before a born child can be declared an American. We should arrest any business manager that hires an illegal immigrant for the benefit of his or her company and put him in with the chain gangs of illegal immigrants so that he can lead them to rebuild our infrastructure, this way the cost of labor should be minimal.

I an American taxpayer cannot soak up any more taxes caused by our Liberal Santa Claus government, the only other recourse I see if the government won't do it, is a dedicated walk to Washington DC to stop this mess now. We need people millions of people to do this walk and clog up Washington for a few days telling them that we want this illegal immigrant BS to be stopped. It must be peaceful and planned, we must let Osama Obama know that we are fed up with his tactics.

We had a 'comprehensive immigration reform' bill passed and signed by Reagan in 1986 with virtually the same provisions as what Obama wants (link below), but the enforcement provisions have been ignored for the last 26 years, so now we have ANOTHER 12 million illegal immigrants wanting THEIR version.
Unless we have REAL border security, what's the point of passing ANOTHER 'reform' bill that will be conveniently ignored?

We should have a sound immigration policy.

The U.S. should follow immigration policies that are similar to Canada, Australia and other western countries. These western countries require that people who want to become citizens of their land can: independently support themselves for at least 6 months, are educated and have marketable and professional skills. Surely, not every intended immigrant will fit into this category. Thus, we should have citizenship paths for those that do not meet the desirable requirements. Our resources are strained. The U.S. cannot be "an open door" for every single person that wants to come here.

truthhurtsattimes "Remember we are all immigrants."

Actually the majority of us are born US citizens, we are not immigrants. Somewhere down our tree, one of our Ancestors immigrated here, but to say we are "all" immigrants is false.

the "Native" Americans were immigrants too, from southeast asia, they just got here before the British, French, and Spanish colonized it.

Actually this too is incorrect and has been documented in a DNA study done by Harvard. What they established is since 1492, Native Americans have mixed with European and African populations. They did not come together but in successive waves, Native Americans migrated to America in three waves. One population crossed a land bridge from Siberia during the last Ice Age. One from the other subsequent migrations showed DNA of in Eskimo speaking populations in Alaska, Greenland, and Canada. The last was detected in the Canadian Chipewyan group who are 90% made up of First Americans' DNA. In summary they discovered that there were multiple waves of migration that interbred with the earlier groups in parts of North America. According to DNA, at some point we all trace back to Africa.

thankfully the British did what they did too, because if they did not colonize the land that WE took from the British, who would have stopped the Nazi's and the Japanese in WW2? if not for America, you would have no free place to spew your liberal party line BS. REMEMBER THAT!

That is only speculation. One would never know what would have happened "IF". Its crazy to even speculate. Besides the British were not the only ones to migrate to the Americas during the time they arrived on the East Coast. You have heard of the Louisiana Purchase, you know land settled & owned by the French. You have heard of the Republic of Texas, land owned by Mexico. Areas that were not part of the 13 Colonies but certainly part of America and present day US. It could have easily gone a different way if either the France or Mexico took over the US. But again, "IFs" No one can speculate on ifs and should never try. It is what it is because certain events took place for certain reasons during those time period.

ROY,

The biggest problem is not border security.

3 of 4 illegals come here legally in busses, cars, trains and airplanes using US provided visas. The problem is that many of them do not leave when their visa expires.

More dollars should be spent on a tracking method for those that are here because their visa allows them. Some method of regular check-in like we have for people on probation should be mandated.

The cost of a tracking system would be far less than billions to secure a border that can never be 100% secured. Spend border security dollars on stopping the gang and drug related violence.

Second -- all intelligence that we had indicated WMD, Saddam wiped out a city with WMD, but even if we didn't have that intelligence of WMD Iraq should of fell because like all uninformed lieberals, do you remember the rules of surrender to Iraq, do you remember Navy Air Craft being engaged and shot at by Iraqi aircraft.

Yes I attended school, I also attended the Navy when our pilots came back after being engaged and shot at. WHERE WERE YOU, probably as home asleep in your little nice warm bed, eating your porridge and peas, and saying isn't life wonderful.

I passed my exams of life the hard way, and don't like no little punk telling me did I go to school, the only reason some of these Presidents didn't get impeached was because of the liberal press supporting these puppies.

Did GWB do right, maybe he should of played liberal, and said we have no right to attack other countries to get Al Quaida, since they were in other countries. Did you want to wait until New York was completely destroyed.

Thats all we hear, GWB said WMD and there were none, Could it have been that the CiA was completely exhausted and disabled during the Clinton years while he was enjoying that BJ.

Pigotry "Current U.S. visa policy is thwarting would-be job generators from pursuing their aims within our borders. We cannot afford to expel these vital individuals."

Nobody is wanting to 'expel vital individuals' - the innovators that help create jobs and open businesses, but let's not pretend that those illegals who sneak across the borders make up any serious portion of this group.

The vast majority of those that sneak across the borders don't have any money to invest and don't even have a high school diploma. They end up being a costly net drain on the taxpayers, and the only real reason that you want them in is because they will ultimately vote overwhelmingly for the Democrats because of the 'free' benefits that they get.

"We want your talent" should be our slogan.

NO!!!!!!!

"We can make our own talent" should be our slogan.

We spend more on education than any nation in the world other than Switzerland. We educate foreign students that go back home with degrees in science, technology, engineering, math, medicine and other vital professions. In the meantime we have millions of high-wage/good benefit jobs here being unfilled because we continue to allow our incompetent government to run our education system.

Most Americans graduate high school reading at an 8th grade level. U.S. adults rank 12th among 20 high income countries in composite (document, prose, and quantitative) literacy.

Instead of worrying about adding every 4 year old to a Begindergartner program we need to fix our criminal government run public education system. Ever since we allowed the governments monopoly to take over our education system our children have ranked worse than other OECD nations in reading, math and science.

These are the 3 most vital areas we need to be competitive in the new 21st century global economy.

We dwell on getting our children into college when 20% of high school graduates can’t read their diplomas.

Approximately 50 percent of the nation's unemployed youth age 16-21 are functional illiterate, with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs. Nearly half of America's adults are poor readers, or "functionally illiterate." They can't carry out simply tasks like balancing check books, reading drug labels or writing essays for a job. And we wonder why our society continues to collapse?

44 million adults in the U.S. can't read well enough to read a simple story to a child. This is the classic, “the blind leading the blind”. When we have functionally illiterate parents trying to help functionally illiterate children the results can’t be good.

To participate fully in society and the workplace in 2020, citizens will need powerful literacy abilities that until now have been achieved by only a small percentage of the population. This is what happens when we reward mediocrity and demonize success. The class warfare/envy meme that Barrack Hussein has been promoting is socially destructive but politically successful. Insulting the rich and successful is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. When Americans are told the best they can achieve is to be middle class and then admit we need more and more advance educated people, confusion sets in.

46% of American adults cannot understand the label on their prescription medicine. According to the American Medical Association of Medical Colleges, by 2027, the nation will need an additional 150,000 doctors to meet demand. Remember, it takes between 23 and 28 years to become a physician. This is an additional 11 to 15 years beyond high school. Unless we are adding that many new students to our medical schools today we will be suffering a worse doctor shortage than we are today when we add 20 million illegal aliens by “immigration reform”.

Over one million children drop out of school each year, costing the nation over $240 billion in lost earnings, forgone tax revenues, and expenditures for social services. This equates to a $2.5 trillion loss of wealth for our nation over the next 10 years. It only goes to reason if we allow citizenship to 20 million illegal aliens the cost to our already fragile economy will be dramatically increased.

Our great Republic won’t be fixed on politically motivated decisions. A comprehensive immigration reform solution MUST be more concerned with the long term consequences rather than the immediate political benefits.

Unfortunately our political system never worries about tomorrow, they only worry about retaining their power and control they have over us today.

Immediate concerns about immigration reform must be balanced by the long term effects as we hopefully fix our failing education system. If not the unwashed masses that keep the political parties in power will only increase as our competitiveness in the global market will decrease.

Dennis, Columbus, Ohio "ROY, The biggest problem is not border security."

The 'biggest problem' is actually the lack of enforcement of our immigration laws.

In 1986, Reagan signed the last version of 'Comprehensive Immigration Reform', with the following provisions;

  • - required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status.
  • - made it illegal to knowingly hire or recruit unauthorized immigrants.
  • - legalized certain seasonal agricultural illegal immigrants.
  • - legalized illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and had resided there continuously with the penalty of a fine, back taxes due, and admission of guilt. About three million illegal immigrants were granted legal status.

Isn't it interesting that those seem to be most of the same provisions that Obama is pushing for now?

The REAL solution is to just enforce those existing laws, with an emphasis on requiring that every employer use E-Verify to make sure that all of their employees are legally entitled to work here. It should have much stricter penalties against EMPLOYERS for violations - including criminal charges. If we just enforced the existing laws, we would see millions of illegal immigrants 'self-deport' because they couldn't find work, and THEN we could humanely deal with those that remain.

A 'new law' with the same provisions as the old law, which will just be ignored again, accomplishes nothing.

I am tossed on this one. But a few things most don't know.

It takes on average 10 years to become a legal US citizen coming from Mexico due to quota policies within the government while if you are from other parts of the world it can be done in less than 5 months. And many of the ones doing it in five months really don't like us much, live by their own laws, and refuse to assimilate.

If someone is illegal and becomes legal, it is only one form to fill out that will apply all payments made to a false SS# to a legal one. And since many illegals declare 9 or 10 dependents, they will be able to receive full SS without ever having paid taxes. And while they are supposed to be separate funds, they owe it to the US to pay those back taxes in order to gain citizenship. Most countries require either payment or proof of financial security to gain citizenship.

While I appreciate people wanting to live the American dream, I believe there should be a cost. Charge for citizenship and eliminate the payment of welfare for anyone who would gain citizenship through this program.

The SSA only knows about numbers assigned to deceased people that have officially reported as deceased.

In addition there are millions of SS numbers assigned to children and students that are not employed. The SSA does not have a “logic” test that would say “this card number belongs to a person that is too young to have a job”.

Agree, above anything else.

Then for those already here and working we need to open our hearts and let the sunshine in. It is the only way practical to get a handle on our problem .

Reagan opened his heart based certain variables that were to happen. One being employer enforcement. But the lobbyists succeeded in softening the sanctions on employers who hire illegal immigrants. Thus we doubled the illegals that came across the boarder.

This time the boarder must be closed before anything else. Then and only then should they past Legal Immigration reform and adhere to no lobbyist. Employers must be fined heavily if caught, Illegals must serve jail time here in jail if caught and then shipped back to their country, this after the new regulations are implemented. Those here illegally now, should be dealt with as in the Rubio's joint resolution with 8 other Republican & Democrat Senators. Absolutely NO AMNESTY whatsoever. It is not fair to those immigrants that have followed the rules and waited for years to come here legally. This country want's those that follow the rules, not those that break our laws. Americans cannot discuss illegal immigration to any extent because we are unable to even get past the first step of acknowledging there is a difference between legal and illegal immigrants. In fact, critical thinking is so controlled by party affiliation and said party policy that to call it thinking is a joke.

For Instance, Obama claims to preside over lower increases in Federal spending levels than other presidents, yet runs deficits higher than any president in history. This claim is true based on one year's budget in 2007 when BOTH parties championed bailing out wall street. End result, last 5 year's deficits twice the previous records of the Shrub. And this is supposed to be success?

Another detail glossed over due to partisanship - An analysis regarding who made out well o the recovery - 'Incomes rose more than 11 percent for the top 1 percent of earners during the economic recovery, but not at all for everybody else, according to new data. The numbers, produced by Emmanuel Saez, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, show overall income growing by just 1.7 percent over the period. But there was a wide gap between the top 1 percent, whose earnings rose by 11.2 percent, and the other 99 percent, whose earnings declined by 0.4 percent." Yet Democrats cheer said results that they would justifiably scorned and vilified under a Republican Administration. Another resounding success apparently!

So please quit making arguments on these boards claiming something other than what they are - weak positions and arguments lacking valid details including critical thought. Positions pushed and cheered simply because of partisan rhetoric.

I think you would be mistaken. I am an employer who hired a kid that spoke fluent English, Graduated from a Arizona high school with a 4.0, bought three cars and a house. I did everything according to the laws governing hiring including taking a copy of a real SS card. When an employee is hired a first report of hire must be filed.

It just so happens that his uncle had a SS# and lived in Texas. This kid was working in MN. I found out that 4 or 5 of the relatives and friends were using the # in different states all over the country. I consulted a lawyer, the authorities, let him go and they did nothing. He came here on a visitors pass at 14 and never left.

Don't try to tell me that the SS Administration didn't know that the one man could not be working in 6 states at once when they were receiving funds from all.

On a side note: Can we all hit inflammatory on wilson so maybe MSNBC would ban them?

Yet another purposeful leak by the Obama administration. Obama is just setting the stage for another round in his infinite blame game against Republicans. Obama has no interest in an immigration bill supported by Republicans, as that does not advance the totally left liberal ideology of our president. Obama wants a battle, he wants blame, and in the end excuses for why his reasonable plan failed pass. Obama's sole desire is Democrats taking over Congress in 2014, and if he can't spend the next two years using Republicans as his whipping boy that has less chance of success. Never have we had a president so inept, that absolutely nothing can get done, and it is all the fault of Republicans. What a pathetic excuse for a president and a political party. The Democrats have been highjacked by the ultra left wing liberals, who only have their vision of a socialist country in mind.

P.S.: If we want to create jobs in America, we must welcome foreign-born innovators.

Now, that's a sentiment I agree with wholeheartedly!

America was built by such people.

People who applied for citizenship, and were set upon that path at places like Ellis Island. People from all nations to come and do such, not just people from any one area who, by convenience of a common border, sneak in here illegally.

People who wanted to be Americans.

Please tell me Pigotry, why don't these people come in the Front Door, like someone from, perhaps...Norway? The UK? Zimbabwe? Jamaica? China?

We need to close the border, use returning US troops to do it if necessary. It's only a matter of time before people who are distinctly NOT from the Americas sneak in here and do great damage.

.

As I recall, the people who want to come to America do so for her boundless opportunity; Where else on the planet can an Austrian bodybuilder go, and become Governor of one of the biggest States?

Arnold came in the Front Door. Good for him. So have a number of the greatest minds in history.

.

.

Oh, and here's a little something for the "We Hispanics were here before the 'White' People:

What rights did your Conquistadors provide to the indigenous People here that they 'discovered'?

Francisco Pizarro, now there's an example of Mankind's integrity, huh?

john,

I did not say that what you said was incorrect – there is a problem with several different people using the same identity and/or SSN.

I merely pointed out where there are other holes in the SS system that can allow the use of a number where the SSA won’t discover the miss-use for years, if ever.

Dennis, Columbus, Ohio

Another story. My son turned 18 last year. He has been on my payroll since he was 14. When we did a first report of hire we had written down his SS# in error. All his bank accounts were also in error. We applied for student loans through the government and they caught it. To me, that means that as long as the money is coming in i.e. his SS payments made by me and him, they did not care. It was only when he asked for money that they cared. IT also means that they are capable of doing their checks and balances.

Also, death certificates are filed with the government. I don't know whether one part of the government does not talk to the other, but that is easily remedied.

SS is a government cash cow. I think they know quite well.

Obtaining money or citizenship; it all boils down to "Is it legal; did you break the law to get it." This is like bank robbers, burglars and other thieves whining because we don't want to let them keep what they obtained by breaking the law. Want money or citizenship? Prove you are worthy by working for it within the legal system!!

Why should lawbreakers get a special "Fast Track" those fine people working through the legal system do not get? Are we going to start giving the same breaks to the other common criminals?

How does this work in the other direction, from the U.S. to Mexico or ANY OTHER country in the world?

Those damn pesky white house leaks

The draft was obtained from an Obama administration official who said it was being distributed to various agencies. The official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to release the proposal publicly.

    Yeah right!

One of those senators, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Obama's bill repeats the failures of past legislation and would be "dead on arrival" in Congress.

"It fails to follow through on previously broken promises to secure our borders, (and) creates a special pathway that puts those who broke our immigration laws at an advantage over those who chose to do things the right way and come here legally," Rubio said. "It would actually make our immigration problems worse."

Isnt that the goal? Bankrupt the US sooner than later?

The White House is not directly commenting on a newspaper report that the administration is considering a path for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent U.S. residents within eight years

Well then it's hard to surmize exactly what is in this 'path' since mums the word isn't it?

Sure, we need immigrants. Legal immigrants.

I wonder how many fortune 500 companies were started by illegal immigrants that snuck across the border?

Do people realize that it is easier for someone to come from Mexico LEGALLY than it is from any other country? Mexico has the greatest number of legal US immigrants compared to any other country. So they already get the most legal immigrants, yet somehow that is not enough?

What exactly needs to be reformed about immigration? You go to an embassy in your country. You apply. You are either accepted or denied. You either move to the US or you don't. Seems to work for the most part for everyone else except for those from Latin America. For some reason, even though they get the most legal immigrants, following the rules is not fair to them.

Deport every single person you find in the country illegally. Don't care if it is a scientist from London, or a pregnant single mother of 5 from Mexico. If they are here in the country illegally, there should only be one path for them, and that is not the path to legal status or citizenship.

Disclaimer, my wife came here legally, my mother came here legally, my aunt came here legally, my cousin came here legally, and several of my friends came here legally.

Annual Immigrants to U.S. by Origin (as of 2010 – most recent data):
    Asia = 422,058 (40.5%)
    Mexico = 139,120 (13.3%)
    Europe = 88,730 (8.5%)
    Total all = 1,042,625
For the first time in nearly 100 years immigration from Asia tops the list.

For those of you that are spouting numbers about illegals...Mexicans...you think they fill out questionnaires and so on and so forth...well you are stupid to say the least. These people fly under the radar completely using false ID's as much as possible, they don;t pay taxes they don't care about taxes, what little is withheld is lost. In Tx and Ok sheriff depts try regularly to infiltrate so they can stop the use of false ID;s to no avail they do not trust anyone but their own period. So to think Poltifac has the answers is ludicrus at best.

No reform is necessary. If you are here illegally, get to steppin. You broke the law when you entered this country without documentation. I need a passport to enter Mexico, I suggest you do the same. Round them up and ship them home. End of discussion. No grey area.

You do NOT need a passport to enter Mexico but you will need one to get back into the US.

Amnesty did not work for the United States in 1986. How could we even think it will work the 2nd time around. Perhaps for getting politicians elected but not for the good of the USA.

Our elected officials do not want to enforce the provisions of that 1986 Immigration Reform, we now have 12 million undocumented immigrants. Are we going to enforce the provisions this time around, I don't think so.

NO AMNESTY. Contact your elected officials now and let them know, you, the current legal voters will vote them out first before they can hope the undocumented immigrants vote for their party in the future. Implement the laws. Suspend the H-1B program while unemployment is high.

        @ Rick-3416939,

Your assessment of the Obama administration regarding Immigration reform is quite delusional. Never assess a politician of any Party by their rhetoric. Rather, you assess them by their legislative action and/or legislation proposals. From the onset, Obama was against Arizona's SB1070. And only ONE Republican spoke against it, once. Marco Rubio was this Republican. Except, Marco's family of Cuban refugees received free passage to the US whille he himself was always against any proposals for an earned path to citizenship for other Immigrants. Marco, then, criticzed the Obama administration over not proposing a Buget to Congress. However, he now would condemn the administration if the proposing an idea for any comprehensive immigration reform proposal. The GOP is slippery like a snake on the immigration issue like everything else. When they were in power during the past, they legislated no immmigration reform when able to do so. During the 2012 election, the GOP advocated self deportation for immigrants. Now, during a post 2012 election era after Romney's loss. The GOP wants no immigration reform proposal from the adminstration who first acted on reform with the Dream Act. The GOP isn't interested in legislating solutions. They're more interested in presenting the illusion they did something about immigration while someone else legislates the Bill to escape criticsm from the xenophobic TEA party base......period.

Yep, our borders are secure (just ask Mr. Obama or Mrs. Napolitano), therefore march to the beat of the drummer to "MY" comprehensive Illegal Alien (Immigrant) Amnesty program. And, they will probably say "We don't have an Illegal Alien (Immigrant) problem".....sorta like "We don't have a Progressive spending problem".

Wait a minute....our borders are secure ? Guess those "border" homeowners should make a statement, or two, or three, or four.

Current immigration laws have failed so far...let's move on

can you please qualify this statement? My wife is Russian, immigrated here to the U.S. in the late 90's. She went through all the legal processess, paid her fees and after 7 years was granted citizenship. The point is, there is nothing wrong with our immigration process. It works just fine if people choose to follow it legally. We just need to enforce what we already have. By streamlining, fast tracking, amnesty, etc, all these are a huge slap in the face of people like my wife who came here and went through the legal channels.

Sleazebag politics. Every President since the beginning has made deals under the table and slipped thru legislation when his party had the upper hand, but this little man is the lowest of the low. He never intended to negotiate a planned immigration, he was holding onto this "special deal" till the time was right, then have Reid or Pelosi introduce it. I say don't give him what wants, give him what he deserves.

Did anyone see how badly Jay Carney stumbled over his lip trying to explain it? Wish I could have seen it.

I see ladies from Juraez come across the border to have their babies at taxpayer expense at a howspital in El Paso, stop off at the welfare office and be home by the time their first check arrives. I see drug smugglers bringing all kinds of drugs and violence across which is bad enough, but with their money they corrupt local officials and police. I see folks who are desperate so they are here to get all they can get at our expense. And you would have them dilute my citizenship for their benefit? Come on. I don't see jobs.

The US immigration system has been broken for some time, and has become a laughing stock in the world. Too slow, too inefficient. In fierce global competition, it really helps the US to streamline the immigration system and specific procedures, so we can welcome hard-working people to come and start working faster.

For example, US K-12 education system has not produced enough math science students to meet the challenges of global competition. American colleges are the crown jewel of US education system and have to rely on foreign imports. Anf the GOP is supposed to be the party of family values, and should support the idea of families of immigrants staying together.

"a laughing stock in the world" Do you know what a foreigner has to go through to get a job in some European countries? In Holland, for instance, a foreigner has to go to court to prove that no citizen of Holland can do the job, and only then can a foreigner work.

It's not broken. It was designed to allow a certain number of people in LEGALLY, not just those that could scale a fence, outrun the border agents, or hop into a boxcar.

It was designed to ensure that those that entered would be a benefit to the country and not a detriment onto our social welfare system--in other words--we don't need impoverished, uneducated immigrants who would just immediately go onto the welfare system and become a burden to the rest of the legal citizens of the country.

It was designed to keep every Tom, Dick and Harry out that wouldn't meet those requirements - and also the criminals with records in their home country--we don't want them either.

It WASN'T BROKEN until all the illegals decided to break the law and say the hell with it and enter our country illegally. And the majority (latest info shows at least 78% of latin america illegal immigrants--Mexico included) are on welfare in this country. We don't need you. You are NOT contributing, you are just sucking the blood out of this country and taking away from those that are legally here.

The 11 million people who decided to break the law by coming here illegally is who has broken our immigration system and who is breaking the back of our country. Look at what's happened to California--the illegals in that country have overrun the schools, broken the medical community by forcing hospitals to close because they can't pay for medical treatment and have the nerve to ask that we put everything in Spanish and other languages--get a clue man - if you want to speak your language, then move back to your country. You want to take what we have to offer but give nothing in return. You want to turn the US into the slovenly, crime riddled country that you created and fled from.

Sorry--no sympathy from this native-born American. Sick and tired of your whinning about rights, you have no rights, you are not legal citizens.

If I had my way, I'd deport each and every one of you law breakers back where you came from as quickly as I could.

Pigotry......your examples of great success stories such as Google and Ebay founder forget to mention one thing. These guys immigrated "legally" and they are not coming from Mexico where the vast majority are poor, uneducated and unwilling to assimilate into this country, but nice try.

You also state that our workforce needs a math and science educated workforce, which is very true. However, not to many Mexican or natural born US citizens seem to be pursuing this field. It is mostly foreigners here on work/study programs legally from India, China, or other Asian countries. Many illegals from south of the border do not complete their basic high school education. This country has been flooded by people who are poor (by no fault necessarily of their own) who have now become a financial drain on this country, and the dwindling taxpayers. Close the borders NOW, change the law, that anyone born in the US must be born from at least 1 US citizen to qualify for citizenship, and those here illegally need to apply for citizenship which means no criminal record, must have minimum of high school education, and pay a penalty, and if they break the law they will be deported pure and simple. No other country in the world tolerates this non sense. We have millions who are unemployed, can't find a job, whose wages are declining and you want to take more unskilled, uneducated, government dependents, and classify them as vital to the workplace?

Last I checked Obama was not a dictator. He as the POTUS needs to work with the different branches of government to get things done. He does not make laws by decree, and someone needs to tell this so called "constitution scholar" as much, because as smart as everyone keeps telling us he is, he sure doesn't seem to get the basic premise of the law and how this country operates. We have immigration laws, enforce them!

We didn't want him to raise taxes, he shoved that down our throats as well. Now he is shoving illegal immigrants down our throats and raising our taxes to pay for them. This shows how out of touch he is with society. Let him try giving up his job for an illegal immigrant to see what kind of person he is.

Everybody acts like this is the first time we are going to pass a complete immigration bill.

The problems is the first 1 passed was a good law, but never enforced and the whole process started all over again and here we are 25 yrs later and have to deal with another 18 million INVADERS and REWARD their illegal criminal behaviour.

The PIG wants you to think that giving these UNDOCUMENTED INVADERS will create jobs is a joke, with about 14 million still unemployed and now the PIG wants to add 18 million more legal to work, will add 32 million to a work force that cant employ them !

we in california has seen first hand what the INVADERS has done to the hospital ER rooms it bankrupted them and our state budget is bloated and cant sustain more people sucking off the system !

and 25 yrs from now we will be passing another INVADER law because as history tells us, NO ENFORCEMENT leads to more INVADERS !

The ONLY thing that is "broken" is our leaders' commitment to enforce the very laws they are legally duty-bound to enforce! We permit 1 Million LEGAL immigrants into this country each year. The issue is NOT whether we choose immigration vs. no immigration. The correct issue IS whether the lawbreakers (the ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS) will be rewarded and granted special treatment for their lawbreaking!

This country will collapse from within. Don't believe it? Fine. Maybe you will live to see it then you can say,oh yeah. The very government the people elect are selling them out day after day to some forigen interest. They do not care about the American people at all. Just their pay, how they look and what they can profit from next. The sad thing is the natural born citizens don't do anything about it. If this was a black issue there would be thousands of them protesting. Maybe now is the time for all of us to join together for a change and do just that. Start sending them emails or letters and let them know if this passes they have won their last election. Hit them where it hurts,in their pockets. That will get their attention real fast.

I continue to be amused at the Presidents politics. It seems on every major subject he says the same things. " if they fail to act then I will" " if they don't present a plan then I will present mine." But wait there hasn't been much action on the budget or immigration or any other issue important to this country for nearly 5 years yet he has not presented any of "his" plans. You know why ? He doesn't have any plans other than trying to make the mess we are in look like someone elses fault. He is not a leader. If he were he would present "his plan" and let congress work it out. Thats what leaders do. They get the ball rolling with the basic framework and then let others work out the details. I am reminded of the cowardly lion in The wizard of Oz. Instead of " If I only had a brain" Obama must be saying " If I only had a plan".

                Pigotry,
Everything you referenced was for LEGAL immigration, which I have no problem with. The illegals that are here now need to leave and follow the process like everyone else.

You are so hip on Mexicans; go to Mexico and TRY to become a citizen, you can't even own land unless you were born there.

You obviously have never tried to find work in the E.U.(at least not in the past decade).

Every one of the immigrants you listed were here LEGALLY. Even when we get "talent" legally sometimes their ideology is not American. Look up Operation Paperclip.

P.S. Can I have your address? I want to come sneak into your basement/attic, tap your water and electric supply and use as many of your resources for free that I can, then complain that I don't have a say in how you run your house... sounds fair to me.(sarcasm off)

It's long overdue-time to round them up and ship them home! they are taking jobs and as history tells us the dems will not fund border security to prevent more of this from happening. We have done this BEFORE, how did that work? We went from 3 million to 18, I don't care if their kids were "born here" so they are citizens, that's bull. SECURE OUR BORDERS, no more illegal aliens. there are plenty of LEGAL americans waiting to fill these so-called unwanted jobs(they do jobs no american wants?) . These "job creaters" piggy is spewing about can GO BACK TO MEXICO and "create jobs" there.

Nope, no Latinos on that list. That's the problem, the Latinos work here but don't support the economy.

I was forced out of the home building industry because I didn't want to go from $28 an hr to $12. When was the last time you saw a latino family out for dinner at a restaurant? That is why a lot of of our local restaurants are closing.

                  POLL: February 2013–Public Policy Polling

                  • Over 60% of voters support a path to citizenship. 64% of voters nationally think illegal immigrants should be given a chance to apply for legal citizenship, compared to only 27% who think they should be deported back to their home countries.
                  • This includes a majority of white voters and a plurality of Republicans. Over two thirds of white voters with an opinion on the matter (60/29) and a plurality of Republicans (44/41) support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants in the country.

For all those who cry that the "illegals" steal the jobs of the "Americans" there are plenty of rural and agricultural jobs that Americans doesn't want to take because they are too hard (picking up tomatoes under 110 Fº isn't a bed of roses). California opened a program to hire Americans to do those jobs. Only 40 persons applied, and after 1 week, only 5 remained at the jobs. So tell me where are the Americans applying for those "cheap and hard works that those "dirty" illegals do for us??????

Grandpa: This poll doesn't go deep enough. Yes, they should be allowed to apply for citizenship, but they need to get in line like everyone else. The poll also doesn't state if they should be entitled to free benefits while living here.

Anyone who has relatives waiting in line OUTSIDE our borders, knows that this poll is a bunch of CRAP.

Only 40 persons applied, and after 1 week, only 5 remained at the jobs. So tell me where are the Americans applying for those "cheap and hard works that those "dirty" illegals do for us??????

Martin : Try the Construction industry. And if illegals were really doing all the jobs that Americans won't, why do we so many of them in Construction? I don't recall there being a shortage of produce picking jobs?

It's really simple. Illegals use that as an excuse to stay, then they move on from there just like any other person.

                    Hi,

This is why I and the wife are thinking of leaving this country, I am now retired and was thinking of going to Canada, but they aren't accepting Americans, we then tried Austraila and they want only certain educated people and trade types in. So our choices are South America, and the Philippines. Are all you liberals catching a clue here. Yes today the liberals are the higher per centage of voters and poll takers, they want the Santa Claus Government because they want free sheet. They are the reason that America is 17 to 19 trillion in debt. The only thing I can say is why don't we all quit working and go on welfare, then who will take care of the needy and under priviliged.

I can see a new Mexico coming, and it isn't a state in the United States, it will be the United States, we are almost there, people using drugs, bars on apartment windows, barbed wire around parking lots, 12 foot high fences with barbed wire on top, drive by shootings, people afraid to go out after dark, cities going broke, housing with ten families living in them,

                    AND

Miss Piggy wanting more of this fine American life that we have created. Yes we are a very versitle nation, that is getting ready for the big collapse. \

Pigotry "For example, US K-12 education system has not produced enough math science students to meet the challenges of global competition. American colleges are the crown jewel of US education system and have to rely on foreign imports."

So your answer is to encourage the recognition of 12 million illegal immigrants who sneaked across the border, the vast majority of who didn't even graduate from high school?

Somehow, I don't think we'll find many 'math/science whizzes' in that group.

Let's be honest - they come for the 'Free benefits', like free education (in their native language), free health care (Medicaid and/or emergency room care), free food stamps, free housing assistance, etc. (puts a whole new meaning to the term "Land of the Free" doesn't it?), and despite what some liberals claim, they DO NOT pay anywhere near the amount in taxes to compensate for their cost to taxpayers, especially when we factor in the $Billions we spend each year for illegal immigrants in our prisons for serious crimes.

Unless we secure our borders and enforce our existing laws on immigration, what's the point of passing any new laws that will be similarly ignored?

I know for a fact, that most ( if not all) are not entirely living off of their own means, so spare me your lecture on how they contribute to the economy.

You don't notice them, that's the story. Ask yourself, how much the illegals collect in returns from government???? NONE,

How much do the illegals collect in welfare, free schooling for their kids, free healthcare? If you say NONE, then you are lying to yourself. And their have been reports that illegals are claiming nieces and nephews on their returns as dependents, even if they don't live with them.

So, why don't you show your rage when companies like BP, EXXON, GE and others have grants by the government over the taxpayer shoulders and the illegals have NONE????

Because companies like this, have nothing to do with this argument. Why don't I start talking about how Planned Parenthood, sponsored by the govt., is is probably providing abortion services to illegals? And yes, that is with taxpayers dollars too.

Afterall, you said the owner can't pay his workers more, and no doubt you picked him for his low prices. Everything would be broken when you fail to enforce the laws. Our borders are not secure. Immigration laws have been very selectively enforced. So to call the system broken seems more like a planned outcome. Selective enforcement of our laws is very much in the Obama playbook.

                    Grandpa

Most Americans believe in a path to citizenship. The problem is what is being advocated by Obama is a path that pushes illegals to the head of the line in front of immigrants who obeyed the laws, and in effect rewards law breakers and punishes the law abiding. It also sends the message that if you can get here by any means, you (and your entire family) will eventually be welcomed and awarded full citizenship.

You can get any statistic you want by how you ask the question. Too many people accuse those opposed to illegal aliens of opposing all immigration. It's just simply not true.

So do I support a path to citizenship for the illegals here? Yes, but it should be no different than the path all others must take and steps must be taken to close the borders first and foremost.

jrsygrl, your reply to Grandpa is dead on.

Do you all not know the difference between legal residents and citizens? The article specifically talks about residency, not citizenship, in 8 years. The bi-partisan plan also has specific requirements and timelines for application for citizenship that don't put anyone ahead of others. If you're truly in agreement with a path to citizenship, I see no reason to have an issue with this.

The US immigration system has been broken for some time, and has become a laughing stock in the world. Too slow, too inefficient. In fierce global competition, it really helps the US to streamline the immigration system and specific procedures, so we can welcome hard-working people to come and start working faster.

It's become the laughing stock because we pretty much don't enforce it. Last CBO estimate was only 60% caught currently.

For example, US K-12 education system has not produced enough math science students to meet the challenges of global competition. American colleges are the crown jewel of US education system and have to rely on foreign imports. Anf the GOP is supposed to be the party of family values, and should support the idea of families of immigrants staying together.

Our education system has nothing to do with immigrants, in fact the illegals HURT our education system. With holding citizens back while our tax dollars pay for ESL teachers so the illegals can learn enough english to learn in school is crap. Besides, our government is the one ruining our education system along with the illegals.

The article specifically talks about residency, not citizenship, in 8 years. The bi-partisan plan also has specific requirements and timelines for application for citizenship that don't put anyone ahead of others. If you're truly in agreement with a path to citizenship, I see no reason to have an issue with this.

Unless there is language in the bill to shut down the border and not allow these new 'residents' to receive ANY government aid (which is the same paper legal residents have to sign) then obama's bill is a no go.

As I understand, look up the top 4 countries by legal immigrants, they also have the highest undocumented immigrants in the country. Quota gets filled up right away every fiscal year because too many wants to come to this country, legal means or not.

63% of likely U.S. voters think that border control is more important than “legalizing the status of undocumented workers.” Only 27% put amnesty ahead of border security (Rasmussen, March 2011).

67% of likely U.S. voters believe that states should enforce immigration laws if the federal government fails to do so (Rasmussen, February 2011).

68% think that securing the border is more important than granting amnesty to illegal aliens, 26% favor amnesty (Rasmussen, March 2010).

67% believe that illegal immigration is a strain on the federal budget, 23% do not think so (Rasmussen, March 2010).

66% agree that the availability of government benefits attracts illegal aliens to the U.S., 19% disagree (Rasmussen, March 2010).

The White House is not directly commenting on a newspaper report that the administration is considering a path for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent U.S. residents within eight years.

Sure does sound alot like amnesty to me. You don't have to become a U.S. Citizen, you don't have to Learn English, etc.

If you don't become a U.S. Citizen then you should not be able to remain in this country Legally forever.

If this is where you want to live then become a U.S. Citizen and you only get a certain amount of time to do that and you have to give up your citizenship in your native country.

Then again the Upside to that is they would never be able to vote, never be able to own weapons, etc.

Maybe its not such a bad idea after all.

We have had 7 amnesties since Reagan's. All it has done is embolden the next batch of illegals to rush the border.

Had the government not cracked down at the border, he says, "the undocumented population would be half what it is now." A fence intended to keep illegal immigrants out is serving beautifully to keep them in.

Pigidiotry - I love hearing the insane arguments of the globalists... "We can't stop it!!!", "It would cost billions".

Only those in DC would chose the least efficient system of keeping illegals out.

No need to build a fence to keep illegals out.

Implement mandatory E-Verify and $1,000 per day fines for any companies found to have hired illegals.

                      Instant self-deportation.

                      Hey, David Noah

No, David. Mitt Romney supported that. But I am not, and ...

I want to give all people an equal opportunity, especially those who have been brought here when very young and have never known any country other than the US - they ARE Americans and should be taken care of and should enjoy equal opportunity.

Then you support a flat tax so everyone is treated equally correct?

You believe every one should be paying their equal share into the system and everyone should be getting an equal share out of the system correct?

If you believe in equal opportunity then how can you support awarding people that come here illegally while the people that came here legally, and are still trying to come here legally, could pushed to the back of the line?

They can go home and have the same opportunity as the rest of the Immigrants that are trying to come here Legally.

We've always known your ALWAYS in Obama's camp no matter what the issue is so there's no need for you to point that out to us.

I'm sorry, but I DID NOT vote for Obama and things have progressively gotten worse since he's been in office.

And sorry, I personally don't believe that ALL Americans voted for Obama. I believe a majority of the Hispanic community that voted for him weren't legal citizens and did it illegally. And the African-American vote, they voted for him because he was also African-American.

He hasn't done anything great and anything that was great enough that he will be remembered for.

There is HOPE - for LEGAL AMERICANS - not every Tom, Dick and Harry law breaker and criminal currently in the country that are NOT AMERICAN CITIZENS.

Hope you remember where your bread is buttered next time you go into a Wal Mart and can't read anything because it's in Spanish in the middle of Kansas City.

I believe America is Great and it has absolutely nothing to do with Obama being elected because it is the People of the United States that make it great and it will still be great long after Obama is History.

America wasn't great before Obama was elected?

Of course you completely dodged my questions about equality.

Whats is Equality in the U.S. Pigotry?

Is it one class of people paying a proportionally larger share of income taxes while another class of people pay nothing or next to Nothing?

Is it one class of people receiving all kinds of federal aid and benefits while other people are receiving nothing even though they are the ones paying the most into the system?

Are people "receiving their fair share" Pigotry?

KIMBO47...The problem with your numbers are that African Americans only make up 13% of the population and Hispanics, including illegals are about the same number. Thats only 26% of the population if you take your reasons for the presidents re-election. This also assumes African Americans voted only based on color and we aren't smart enough to look at the issues, which doesn't explain Hermain Cain, who is African American and actually darker in color than the current president. Even if you give 30% for African Americans and Hispanics, Mitt should have won by 60-70%.

Either your really bad at math or you just want to let everyone know you hate anyone who isn't the same race as you are, which is ok, in America you are entitled to hate anyone you like.

Those include creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who are here already and creating a system to ensure that employers don’t hire illegal immigrants.

What is that? An oxymoron? Who wrote this garbage? It sounds like the President doesn't have a clue about what is going on and is flip flopping on this issue. Anyone who has waited the 8-15 years to come to the US should be offended by what the President is saying.

But we all know that the President allowed his own aunt and uncle to cut in line when they were here illegally, so it figures how stupid he's becoming.

Noone can really dispute that(piggy says the border is secure so they can't go back?) our border is not secure enough. Can't send them all home? bull. We could use this "homeland security" or disband this illegal entity, they are not really securing our homeland much are they? Send them ALL home, period, we don't need them.(although i have heard reasons for them staying from our dems,"who's going to mow our lawns and clean our pools?" I say how about those teenagers in your neighborhoods? doing jobs no american wants? another bullshi! point. send them back.

                        Hi,

America don't need no stinking wall, just allow all the people to go down to the border and shoot anybody that is crossing the line. Nice and simple, you come across and we give you a bullet for your effort. A month of this and no one will want to cross the border. You know I have to site in my gun for the real action of going hunting, and moving targets would be an excellent way to do it and it would be cheap on the American taxpayer.

If you don't like that then support the illegal immigrant laws, say no to illegals coming into the country. If Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin would of only known the mess that is going on now. Maybe they would have stayed as loyal subjects to New England and the Queen.

Martin: I know that my brother, who works in construction, got phased out of it, because there were too many illegals taking his jobs for a lot less. It wasn't because he wasn't willing to " putting tar on a roof under more than 100Fº", but that his employer found it easier to hire them under the table. So right away, your idea about illegals doing jobs that Americans won't do, is complete garbage.

As for picking tomatoes, and other crap, where we live illegals don't do any of that crap. They think it is beneath them. It is better for them to become someone's nanny or maid, or car washer( things that don't require 100 degree heat).

And yes, a lot of teenagers and older workers were willing to take those jobs.

It's becoming the new norm, where people are living with their parents for a much longer period because they can't find work, and you think there are still jobs that people won't do?

Amnesty has certainly never worked. Neither has not securing our borders. Liberals are all about granting amnesty since they feel the Democratic Party will be the beneficiary. I say grant amnesty to anyone that came here illegally, but with it no ability to vote in any of our elections for the next 25 years. Then you won't have anywhere near the amount of liberal support.

Wow, kinda harsh rhetoric, isn't it? There isn't any difference between a strictly one-way border (people weren't trying to get into East Berlin) and the US/Mexican border?

Can you compare a nation torn in two separate pieces with the US/Mexican border?

How so? Princeton University sociologist Douglas Massey says the number of people coming illegally has not risen appreciably in the last couple of decades. But the number staying has climbed, because anyone who leaves faces a harder task returning.

So, his solution is to maintain the status quo. What an innovator!

Maybe the number of people not returning to Mexico actually like it here and don't go back?

Your 'professor' seems to be myopic.

That's the Ivory Tower for ya.

Had the government not cracked down at the border, he says, "the undocumented population would be half what it is now." A fence intended to keep illegal immigrants out is serving beautifully to keep them in.

So, it's the US Government's fault for everything? Our fault for letting them get by and our fault for them trying to return again when they feel like it?

Has anyone explained to the professor that there's a difference between a state border and national border?

Is your 'professor' aware of Mexico's extreme immigration policies? Did your 'professor' tell you that being illegally in Mexico is a felony?

The impact of not sealing the border:

                          1. It does nothing to prevent people from entering the United States who mean to do us great harm, no matter what nation we may be discussing.

                          2. It does nothing to prevent people from coming here and affixing themselves to the Great American Teat, where any pregnant woman can cross the border, have her baby delivered here (for free) and then stay with that child, who is an 'American Citizen' and now begin a lifetime (and create generations of children) where dependency upon the State becomes a way of life.

                          .

Use returning US troops and technology to identify and speak with (if necessary) anyone wandering around near the border. Make sure the border is clearly established with signs and fences. Motion sensor technology is inexpensive, and video is the best way to cover a lot of area with not much effort.

Punish repeat violators. Fingerprint them and put them into a database that prevents them from opening accounts, getting a job, getting lodging etc.

                          .

I live in the west. Born and raised in Washington, now in Idaho. You may recall WA congressman Tom Foley if you're old enough. Funny that you claim to live out in the RWNL wild west. Here in Idaho, I don't see this wild west you're talking about. Interesting that Idaho has a budget surplus, and Washington is struggling all the time financially. Over 8% sales tax and more. I don't even want to know what Seattle's sales tax is. Please also don't even get me started on the gang problems.

You're the one that can't handle the truth. I've read over your posts on immigration through out this page and you soooooo much misinformation it isn't even funny. You really need to stop listening to obama, using SPLC and/or La Raza, and DHS as your information source, and go out and find the REAL data. All you're doing is spreading progressive open border propaganda that is about as far from the truth as you can get.

As for the "one-way fence" issue, you need no documents to LEAVE the USA. Leave by train, plain, ship, or automobile--any way you want. The US government doesn't ask questions. So if a fence will keep the illegals out, start building. And I agree with making sure that no one that benefits from the this amnesty (let's call it what it is) should have the right to vote for at least 25 years. And where are the grandiose announcements of enforcement of fines on employers of illegal aliens? Not a popular political subject?

I am tired of being pandered from.

Yes, the big fix during the Reagan years, never to be done again they said. The borders were to be secured so it wouldn't happen again and here we are with over eleven million needed to be made citizens. Bull crap. They darn well better secure the border this time because I am sick of having American schools taught in Spanish along with English. I am sick of having to press one for English and two for Spanish. English is our national language not Spanish. When my family came here from Germany and Norway they couldn't go to school until they spoke English. They had to read English too in order to drive a car now the test comes in Spanish too. This is not right. We are a nation of laws, always have been until recently when the government in charge picks and chooses which laws they will enforce. Why do we make England, France, Germany and all the rest follow our immigration rules and then we just give Mexicans an eleven million person pass? Laws are laws and rules are rules at least that is what I was always taught.

While the answer is supposed to be complex, it isn't. The supporters of open borders for Hispanics only, need to feel superior to immigrants and can't do that with educated people trying to enter legally.

They are the worst kind of bigoted racists.

Dari: I agree with you as well. Every other nationality in the US has to learn English. Why are we continuing to make allowances for Hispanics who come to this country and who have not learned the language. I have seen hispanics who have lived here in the US for 15 years or more years and have never bothered to learn English.

Meanwhile, they get HUD housing, welfare, etc.....My relatives when they came to this country spoke English..... They learned it before they entered the US. They made sure that when their kids were born here, to teach them English first, so they wouldn't be behind in school. It was only after they entered school that they began to teach them their native language.

Yet we are constantly catering to the hispanic population. Why is that?

Grandpa: You are obviously hispanic, are you here illegally? Because your comments act like someone who doesn't realize how hard other immigrants have earned the right to come here. They paid thousands of dollars in fees, and Obama wants to give young illegals a visa for what, 486 dollars?

Let Obama return the fees to everyone else, before he can claim that illegals are on equal territory with those that are here legally.

Some were really good People. Some were bad. The one thing I won't do is trash all Hispanics because of a few. We are a Nation of Immigrants. Why do you hate People because they want a better life? Why does it always have to be about money?

Because that is why most immigrants come to the US. If they were doing so well in their home countries, why would they consider moving? Don't pretend that it is not a factor, because it is the number one factor in most cases. The second wanting to be with other family members.

I am not saying immigration is bad. I am saying that ILLEGAL immigration is bad. You are slapping people in the face who have been waiting years. I am saying that my parents (who were immigrants) paid the penalty and fought hard to enter into this country legally.

Do you think it is right, to step on them? As if something they worked so hard for, is just given away freely to those who did not follow the same laws?

Can you really say that these people respect the US?

Sure. This coming from someone who got the right to citizenship by merely setting foot on this land. He didn't have to earn his right to citizenship. It was given to his (Cuban) family with a "welcome to america" package including money to get setup with.

Are you arguing now that Birth right citizenship needs to be ended, the Constitution should be changed, and should be part of, and a requirement of, any Immigration Bill, before any illegal immigrant can earn their Citizenship?

DAVID NOAH, You are right that name calling and insults are really uncalled for and not all liberals do it or condone it. The Speech by Rubio was laughable not just because the water incident but because the speech was written prior to the State of the Union and the speechwriter tried to guess what the president was going to say and tried to rebutt it. The speechwriter guessed wrong on many occasions and Rubio was trying to bash views and points the president didn't support. It was a difficult speech because while reading it Rubio realized how off topic many points were and thats why he had a tough time. In the future the response from either side should be written after the SOTU and perhaps read 30 minutes to an hour later. You can support Rubio but the speech was bad.

Don't you people realize that each illegal person could generate around $8,000.00 in penalties, fines, and processing fees that would directly go into US Immigration system that would also go towards border protection and immigration enforcement. This will generate billions of dollars that could go toward lowering the deficit. If these people become legal, alot of them will pay taxes and put more into the system.

I also think that part of the package should include that they will NOT qualify for the EITC until after a reasonable probationary period. All back taxes must be paid before they qualify for it as well. None of this allowing them the credit only to pay those taxes either. There MUST be fines to pay as well as paying fines for bringing or giving birth to children in the US while illegally here.

NO MORE ANCHOR BABIES. And hefty fines to employers who knowingly hire illegals.... even jail time.

The average illegal alien family consumes $1,000,000 more in social services in their lifetime than they pay in taxes.

Where can I sign up for a deal to pay $8,000 and get $1,000,000?

NO AMNESTY. Not today, not tomorrow.

Mandatory E-Verify and self-deportation is the answer.

You didn't read my other post. No assistance programs, No EITC for them. They have to put into the system before they can take. Immigration requirements already require that EVERYONE going through the process demonstrate and prove that they are NOT at poverty level income or below it. Proof of income to show that you will NOT live off of the system.

I'm not for it, but if they are going to do it... let's make sure that we are not taking any more freeloaders in. Go knows that we already have enough of our own legal citizens who leach off the system.

That's great but you can't make up a loss by increasing the numbers.

The net loss per recent immigrant family is $1,000,000. That counts in all taxes.

Amnesty will not magically reduce that cost. In fact since the feds refuse to eliminate chain migration all the amnestied illegals can petition to have their relatives join them and those that do will suck off the welfare system at an even higher rate.

If you think 11-30 million illegals are great for the economy wait until you meet their families and there are 50-150 million new chain migration folks in the country.

And how in the hell do you think they are going to pay that $8K when they are on welfare already...not going to happen.

I live in the real world, you and those fat cats in Washington apparently live in a fantasy land.

I think liberals and conservatives don't want illegals to be a drain on our already shaky system. Against popular belief libers nor conservatives want the US to be a welfare state. It sounds like we have been programmed to insult and hate each other instead of realizing both liberals and conservatives want the same things, sometimes there are just different views on how to achieve the goals.

I am a liberal according to many definitions, and I don't want to learn spanish, I don't want illegals getting benefits without paying taxes and I think people should come here by legal means. There are millions from both sides that share these views, Both Sides. So lets stop insulting each other and understand while some things liberals and conservatives don't agree on, unless your at the extreme left or the extreme right, most things we have in common.

You are correct Karl. I am not a liberal but a conservative and I think the President is making a huge mistake on this. However, since most democrats voted for him ( probably yourself) , I feel that it is up to you and your side of the fence to do something about it. Afterall, you put him in office, even though you knew ahead of time that he let his own aunt and uncle ( who were here illegally) cut in line.

Maybe its time you wrote to your senators and representatives?

                                Dear President Obama.

After almost 50 years of excess from the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 we now allow over 1 Million LEGAL immigrants a year into this country. Add to that hundreds of thousand of specialty job visas and 11-30 million illegal aliens and we allow more low skilled AND high skilled immigrants into the US than any other country in the world. Studies have shown that these immigrants end up on welfare at twice the rate of native born Americans.

In short the 'War on Poverty' was so successful that we decided to import the worlds poor to make up for the Americans we lifted out of poverty.

Myabe you haven't looked around but the country is broke. You recognize the cost to Americans of illegal labor and the strain that it has on our economy. That's a start.

But since the mass of LEGAL immigrants has the same net drain on our economy why do you continue with the tired old excuse that we must maintain an immigration rate that dwarfs what occured during the great migration of the late 19th and early 20th century?

Where is the benefit to allowing so many of the worlds poor into this country? They consume government services at an alarming rate and few have assimilated as those of the last great waves of immigration have.

Now if you are in business and want to depress wages of your workers the best way to do it is to have too many people looking for work. Exactly like what the immigration politices of the last 4.7 decades has done.

Now I know most of those in Washington DC kind of get blinders on when they arrive but don't you think it might be time to look at a 47 year old policy that has devastated our economy and enlarged government to the extent that we can't afford it anymore?

How about realizing that continuing the massive import of people (low and high-skilled) does nothing but take a bite out of Americans paychecks as they hit us on both ends. Their sheer massive numbers causes wage suppression and those who end up on public assistance cause our taxes to go up.

It is no secret that wages have been flat for decades and it is primarily due to the massive number of people we continue to allow into the country as if we needed massive numbers of people.

Here is a clue - we are in an information economy now and need LESS people, not more. But we are on a path to hot 500M in just a few decades. It is unsustainable, everyone knows it is unsustainable but the politicians ignore the elephant in the room.

Somehow you feel importing and amnesting low skilled workers in is good, and increasing high-skilled immigration is even better for the country.

If you were out in the real world, say in an IT job you may not say that since your salary like mine would be flat (if you are lucky). I'm making $20K less today than I did 12 years ago. Why is that? Despite a masters degree from an Ivy League school and keeping on top of all new trends and techniques there is a huge glut of labor in IT.

American's in IT are being pushed out of work in favor of less expensive foreign labor. Companies claim no Americans can be found to do the work so they pay off congress to increase skilled worker visas. More visas = more foreign labor, lower costs and less Americans in the jobs.

That = less tax revenue for America because of lower wages and much of what is earned here is shipped offshore to help the families of said foreign labor.

So help me again President Obama how this is good for America? I guarantee if I was earning what I was in 2000 I would be spending more money to help the US economy. But you in congress have rigged the system so that no matter how many Americans are pushed out of the skilled labor category into working at Walmart or ending up on unemployment - someone always shouts that there is a shortage.

How is it good for America if after studying hard and working harder American's are thrown out of work for cheaper foreign labor?

Does it help America if I have to go on unemployment because companies won't hire the 30 or 40 year old IT worker with a family who needs more than minimum wage to survive?

We sir are fed up. I have worked hard my entire life and want my kids to have a chance at success. But with current immigration policies that enrich businesses at the expense of Americans - we all lose.

There is no disputing that the massive influx of skilled and unskilled workers has devastated both our economy and millions of Americans. There are cases of Americans killing themselves after being forced to train our replacements. If you are not ashamed of that - you have no business being in government.

Businesses have a right to a profit but they also have a responsibility to not constantly throw out Americans in favor of cheaper foreign labor. Such a policy if allowed to continue will further destroy this country.

There is no disputing that all the specialty visas have caused this damage. Anyone who claims that there is a shortage of labor needs to explain how IT worker salaries don't follow the law of supply and demand. If there was a shortage wages would be going up. But they have been flat or declining for more than a decade - which not so strangely tracks with the increase in skilled labor.

So which side do you stand on? The continuation of policies that destroy Americans as well as the country in general? Or will you stand with the people you are sworn to represent?

                                How to fix the economy:

Step 1: Find a way to repeal the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.
Step 2: Cancel all speciality worker visas. Eliminate the H-1B, L-1 and other alphabet soup of visas.

With about 150,000 less people we are importing a month into an anemic labor market we will see unemployment drop dramatically. Government revenues will go back in the black as folks previously on unemployment will be working and paying taxes.

The virtuous cycle of employment and people being able to buy things will result in more sales and companies will enjoy even higher profits - more than offsetting any slight increases in labor costs that will result.

Now this is my fantasy - that there is a single politician who cares about America.

Is it you? Or will a populist politician arise from the ashes of what you and your cohorts in congress have caused?

In either case history is a great pendulum... we've swung way to far in the wrong direction and it is about to swing back in favor of the people. Time will tell which side you will take but history will record your actions and those in the future will look back and either deride your name for helping cause their misery or create statues for you and extol your virtues about being the one person who brought American out of the dark into a prosperous future.

It must be great to live in the alternate reality of open-border fanatics who claim we are living in a zero unemployment utopia with few people on our roads, in our parks, drinking our pure water or enjoying our generous social welfare system.

As most real people know the reality is a bit different...

Unemployment is so high that good luck if you are over 50 (or heck - over 30) and looking for a job. Companies only want the cheapest of the 20-somethings or foreign labor (preferred).

Continued attempts to destroy the middle class will leave us with a rather large gap between the working poor and the robber barons.

How do my white English speaking kids apply for robber baron jobs? Oh that's right - those are a birthright and 'we' aren't allowed to move up.

Welcome to serfdom in the 21st century.

It may take a while but the serfs will revolt and those political whores who allowed this to happen and the robber barons won't like the backlash when it happens.

When the uneducated union-hating idiots realize they are being screwed too I want to make some popcorn and watch from the sidelines.

History has great swings of the pendulum and the uber-rich fascists who run the world should know that they are sowing the seeds of their own destruction right now.

Instead of promoting sustainable policies they are destroying our country and enslaving our people.

A president with balls would call the globalists a clear and present threat to the US and hunt them down and put them all somewhere where they wouldn't be able to continue their anti-US activities.

Unfortunately all politicians suck up to the globalists and moneyed interests.

The 1986 and all subsequent amnesties promised to be the last one. I am sick of the lies of the politicians.

Any comprehensive immigration reform needs to start with mandatory E-Verify for all employees in the country with a 30-day window. Don't use it get fined $1,000 per day per employee.

Then drop birthright citizenship - that was the opposite of what the authors of the ammendment wanted.

Next create a system to identify visa overstayers and fine them if they don't leave the country when they are supposed to.

And for the 'students' who came here to learn - get your degree and go back and improve your country - that is what you signed up to do.

Finally reduce our insane immigration levels from over 1 million per year to 100,000 and stop all chain migration/ family reunification. We have too many people and don't need more to compete for jobs. This 100,000 per year is it. Zero H-1B, L1 and other visas designed to force more Americans out of work.

Wait 5 years and THEN and only THEN can we talk about an amnesty for any illegal aliens left.

Our representatives in DS aren't representing us and it makes me want to puke.

No amnesty for illegals! We did this in 1986 and it was wrong, are we going to do this every 27 years? It's a slap in the face to those who come here legally but politicians don't care because they all pander.

This string seems to be pretty academic. The reality is when you live next door to a house designed for a single family that is now is occupied by 20, with a dozen cars monopolizing the street, ranchera music 24/7, gangs proliferating. It is coming to your neighborhood soon. I write this from the Santa Barbara, CA area, where its happening as we speak; yes, Oprah lives nearby, but has the wealth to insulate herself from this unpleasantness. You don't.

"Americans" should welcome an influx of new ideas and people. That is what America is about..or at least it was.

There's millions of American citizens that can't find a job already and somehow how that will magically be fixed when there's even more people coming to the country to compete for jobs that don't exist?

Lots of produce-picker and car wash and busboy jobs here in SoCal, not enough workers to fill them all. Of course, the standard of living will make life unpleasant to some - but there is indoor plumbing and electricity in the tiny apartments, that sort of nicety.

Thats a bit of a stretch. We have always paid lip service to the concept of immigration but every wave of large scale immigration has been met with the same kind of pushback.

A lot of very selfish attitudes here today. I still welcome new citizens, even if there are those of you who do not. Based on polling, it looks like most Americans are in agreement with me.

Guess we will see, but it looks like we are going to officialy welcome these immigrants to the USA rather than just letting them be here to do menial labor for the wealthy.

                                Welcome!

barack hussein is a phucking moron. My wife came here legally and it cost us over $11,000 to meet all the requirements for her to be here. It took us over a year to obtain her green card which was good for only two years. After two years it cost us another $1500 to again meet all the requirements for her to obtain her 10 year green card. She being her legally has to have 10 years in residence in the US to be able to apply for her citizenship. Why does the idiot in the white house feel illegals should be allowed a short trip to citizenship in only 8 years without paying any of the dues my wife who came here legally is having to pay? This is total bull sh!t

Because he allowed his own aunt and uncle to stay here even though they were here illegally as well.

That's why he thinks it is okay to raise your taxes to pay for them.

Why do our taxes go to border patrol again ? Its like if you get caught coming over here illegaly, you are busted and they send your ass back. but if you make it across ok and they find out later, then it is alright for you to stay.

Any immigration bill that is put foward doesn't mean a thing unless we get our borders secured! Reagan got screwed by the democrats in the '80's when he signed the bill into law and the "Great Satan" Ted Kennedy did nothing to secure the borders. That was the deal then and what about NOW? Let's quote the great Bowie Kuhn, "It's deja vu all over again".

"Great Satan" now we are reduced to using the language of Muslim extremists? Also "deja vu all over again" came not from Bowie Kuhn but rather Yogi Berra.

Show me in your research that illegal immigrants make up the majority of those using government services (food stamps, TANF, cash assistance, etc...), show me proof that illegal immigrants are the reason the economy is suffering, how many illegal immigrants don't pay taxes vs. those who do?, what percentage of illegal immigrants commit crimes against humanity (violent/criminal)? Since everyone all of a sudden becomes an expert on everything all illegal immigrants do or have ever done, i would love for you to give me PROOF!!!! yep...that's what I thought

You are so typical, you want everybody else to do the work for you. You think you are entitled to sit back and do nothing yet get everything you want at the expense of others. Go back to where you came from. I'm sick of all of you including the POS in the white house.

Illegal immigrants do drain the economy. When I lived in Maryland years ago, I worked for a construction company that had a lot of illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America. These were good, hard working men. I liked all of them. But they would bunk up in a 3 bedroom Apartment. Like 8 of them! Only one had a drivers license. I think he was the only one here legally. That guy had to drive them all around. Come payday they would get money orders and send half of their money to their home land. Now imagine this going on all over the country. Instead of investing here in the US, they are sending half, sometimes more of their money back to Mexico or wherever. One guy told me they do this because our money is worth so much more than theirs that they could literally retire in Mexico after sending money back for a couple of years and live like kings. OR, if they get deported they have all that money stored up that they sent back. If this isn't a drain on our economy then what is? They could be investing here by buying homes, etc, but why would they when they can send $800 a pay to Mexico and it be enough to pay rent for 5 years down there?! Another thing they do is send the money back to their family to use to smuggle themselves across the border. Then they can live here and be a one big happy illegal immigrant family. If you think this is how America came to be this great nation of immigrants you are sadly and ignorantly wrong. All my ancestors came here by boat to Ellis Island LEGALLY. They obtained jobs, learned how to speak fluent English and contributed to society. My Great Great Grandma came from Italy. She worked her fingers to the bone. Saved and saved and opened up a grocery store. Ran the store, along with my Great Great Grandfather and raised 12 children!!!! They didn't sneak across the border. They got all the necessary paperwork sent in and waited as long as it took before they had the go-ahead to get on a ship and make their voyage to this great nation of immigrants. Piss on the people who come here under the radar and piss on the employers who pay them under the table so they don't have to pay taxes. And piss on you if you think this is the way it should be!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

                                      Here you go stolik.

A report released this week by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich from the Department of Public Social Services shows that in November 2010, parents who reside in the U.S. illegally collected $53 million in welfare benefits for their native-born children in Los Angeles County, up nearly 3 million from the same period in 2009.

The figures, including $22 million from CalWORKs and $31 million in food stamps, comprises approximately 22 percent of all welfare benefits in Los Angeles County.

Projections based on the monthly figures in 2010 show the total cost for the year will exceed $600 million, up from 2009 when the total sum of $570 million for CalWORKs and food assistance.

“When you add this to $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year – not including the hundreds of millions of dollars for education,” said Antonovich.

                                      http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2011/01/20/report-la-county-welfare-benefits-for-illegals-top-600m/

There were 2.8 million illegal immigrants living in California in 2006, the last year for which there are relatively good figures, according to the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. That represented about 8% of the state's population and roughly a quarter of the nation's illegal immigrants. About 90% of California's illegal immigrants were from Latin America; 65% from Mexico.

There are roughly 19,000 illegal immigrants in state prisons, representing 11% of all inmates. That's costing $970 million during the current fiscal year. The feds kick in a measly $111 million, leaving the state with an $859 million tab.

Schools are the toughest to calculate. Administrators don't ask kids about citizenship status. Anyway, many children of illegal immigrants were born in this country and automatically became U.S. citizens.

If you figure that the children of illegal immigrants attending K-12 schools approximates the proportion of illegal immigrants in the population, the bill currently comes to roughly $4 billion. Most is state money; some local property taxes.

Illegal immigrants aren't entitled to welfare, called CalWORKs. But their citizen children are. Roughly 190,000 kids are receiving welfare checks that pass through their parents. The cost: about $500 million, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office.

@slodon...you're giving me facts regarding U.S. citizens, not illegal immigrants. We're not talking about U.S. citizen children born to illegal immigrants...Illegal immigrants are not counted as a member of the household in regards to receiving benefits, only their income. So, all the info you just gave is neither here nor there. Thanks though!

Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for SNAP. Additionally, there is already a strict waiting period for documented immigrants. Documented adult immigrants (those with a greencard) are subject to a five-year waiting period before they are eligible for SNAP.

                                    • Noncitizens make up a very small portion of SNAP participants – only 4% of participants are noncitizens (documented immigrants or refugees).

You mean like the woman in the Dallas area that didn't speak English, had 8 kids and was pregnant with #9. Said she had a job cleaning houses and couldn't show how much she made, so she got full welfare benefits. Come here, pop em out get money. You don't really believe it just goes to the kids do you. I like the apt I went into one night on a domestic violence call. Both parents illegal, not legally married. Husband was drunk and had a couple of cases of beer in the house and had just finished beating his wife. He was gone before we got there. But all 6 kids had Social Security cards and were getting benefits. Neither parent worked. I wonder how he got all that beer money. Your tax dollars at work. This was a common site in these neighborhoods, so you need to pull your head out of that dark place and see the light.

Why do those who support Obama's plan refuse to call it amnesty? It seems that for some people, paying taxes, knowing the common language of the country for the purpose of cultural assimilation as well as higher income, and passing a criminal background check like those required for certain jobs in the U.S. are "penalties" for illegal aliens, but not for legal citizens. Regarding the requirement to pay for a visa, a good analogy would be allowing people to enter an amusement park, enjoying the attractions, and THEN being asked if they wish to pay the entrance fee, all the while knowing they will be allowed to stay and continue to have fun whether they pay or not.

Don't worry, the US will fail to be a world power in 20 years or less. The new world currency will be from China. Sometime after that, it will no longer exist in it's current form.

you know something....conservatives a independent thinking mississippian here....immigration is the one topic repugs have had a leg to stand on and actually debate...but as soon as you inject racism, or race bait you lose all credibility....you should debate immigration on its merits...for instance the argument of immigrants doing only jobs americans won't do......for instance fruit picking in the alabama(blacks won't do the job), but blacks, criminals, and working poor will do the job just not at the current wages offered by employers profiting off illegal labor....this isn't coming from a place of malice just experience and logic....for instance a few years back I applied for a job at a company called Howard Industries located in laurel MS....I KNEW I would get the job(college educated at this point) very qualified....after the application process I was never called....several weeks later I knew why....just google Howard Industries, Laurel Mississippi, ICE bust(its important you google the story to see where I'm going here).....the day after ICE visited the plant I went back to reapply.....Me and my buddy counted over 500 people before we stopped counting...thousands of people showed up the next day for those few hundred jobs.....I'm not saying this to advocate against immigration reform....I'm just saying the argument that immigrants only do jobs americans can't or won't do is not true in many cases....not saying that it isn't true in many either.....second example worked at popular fine dining restaurant called blue ribbon(as a busser) in park slope brooklyn new york, every day right before open new graduates from culinary school would come by seeking employment...none of which have a good chance of a job in a upscale NYC eatery(I got it because they neeeded a token black and they also needed someone to do the really heavy lifting(former athlete))...I just don't think americans can't compete with workers who live 4-10 in one apartment, even if you bring them from under the table....our family(unorthodox or not) units aren't set up for it....I just don't understand how incorporating 11 million immigrants whose jobs skills, range from produce harvesting on the low end and mechanic on the high end is going to help this economy.....however the kids deserve a real shot at citizenship....the parents?....I'm conflicted

The reason amnesty fails is because the US fails to fix the real problem and that is the porous border.

Reagan trusted the *fix the border later promises* and Reagan got bent over. Are we going to repeat history?

I hope a bill is created that will be agreed on by the House of Representatives, The Senate and The President. I am all for legalizing the current illegal immigrants, but only if they contribute to society, which a lot will. The problem we have now is there are a lot of illegal immigrants who do work, but fall under the radar, send a lot of money back to their home land, and drain our system. If there is a bill that would allow them to come forward and be given citizenship as long as they pay taxes like the rest of us, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, There are issues that the Republicans and Democrats won't agree on, and the President will use executive order to ram through some crazy socialist bill that will just make things worse. We need to fix the immigration problem once and for all. Reagan granted citizenship to millions of illegal aliens through an Immigration Reform Act, unfortunately it was neglected over the years, and millions more have made it over here. I say grant citizenship to the ones that are currently here, under the condition that they pay taxes, like everyone else, have a job within 6 months (no putting them all on 99 weeks of unemployment so they have no incentive to work like 47 million Americans) and they have to pass a background check. They are already here against the law, if they have any felonies from their previous countries or have had felonies here in the U.S., been deported and is back here- you would be sent back to your country of origin permanently. Is this so much to ask??? I mean, if you get caught in most of the countries where these people came from, like Mexico- illegally they race hell. In a lot of instances you are thrown in jail for a long time. Here, you just get deported. Whooptee doo! They got it made here and that is why they keep coming here and draining our economy.

Perhaps they live well on a lot less income in Mexico because the economy is different there. They get paid a fraction of what Americans do but prices of things there are much lower. Someone who makes ten dollars a day is not going to pay $60-$80 dollars for a restaurant dinner.
