The White House is not directly commenting on a newspaper report that the administration is considering a path for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent U.S. residents within eight years.
USA Today said it obtained a draft of a White House immigration plan that contained the proposal.
The White House wouldn’t comment Saturday night directly on the USA Today report but released this statement:
“The President has made clear the principles upon which he believes any commonsense immigration reform effort should be based. We continue to work in support of a bipartisan effort, and while the President has made clear he will move forward if Congress fails to act, progress continues to be made and the administration has not prepared a final bill to submit.”
Since his re-election – which got a boost from Hispanic voters -- President Barack Obama has renewed his push for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration policy, including the topic in his inaugural address and State of the Union speech and making a trip to Nevada last month to highlight the issue.
And there’s been some progress in the Senate: A bipartisan group of senators announced in late January that they had agreed on goals for a major rewrite of immigration laws. Those include creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who are here already and creating a system to ensure that employers don’t hire illegal immigrants.
But reaction to the USA Today report by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., points to the difficulty in passing any package. Rubio issued a statement Saturday saying that if the president's eventual proposal follows the draft described by USA Today, it "would be dead on arrival in Congress."

The borders of the US need to be secured. We need to bring our troops home and secure our own borders! We need to stop being the "world police" and refortify our own country. The US is FULL! From what I've seen, the older generation of illegal immigrants are very hard workers and live within the law (except still being illegal, which does make them criminals). The anchor babies, which are US citizens, are the drain to society.

ok joe, fork over the next 1 trillion to pay for that project. It costs more to kick them out over an inevitably 10 year minimum ong process than it does to leave them all here for 50 years.
The problem JOE is they are here working and not paying taxes. If we make them legal they will be here paying taxes. Trying to Kick 'em Out as you so eloquently put it is easier said than done. We are finding that people who have been deported come back time and time again. Jail with provide them with food, shelter and medical at a cost to taxpayers. The answer is get the illegals to become legal so they can pay their fair share. Will with work, maybe, maybe not, but we must try something.
Congress needs to pass a law mandating that all employers use E-Verify. Once the jobs start to become unavailable to them, a sizable percent of the illegal immigrants will self-deport.
We now have the tools to enforce employment laws better than we ever have before. We should implement E-Verify nationwide for at least five years and measure the results before we consider any form of amnesty.
Here's the only acceptable plan on a path toward comprehensive immigration:
Go straight back across the border where you came from, and if you don't think that's safe, we'll put you and a 100 of your compatriots on a boat, with fishing rods and nets and 30 days of beans, rice, and other staples, and you can float out to sea and either find a friendly nation to take you, find a deserted island, or live out at sea the rest of your life. Good luck - and don't come back because if you do we shoot first & talk second.

why isn't it feasible? the irs does it all the time seeking out millions and millions of people that don't pay taxes each year. So it's not like it's impossible it may take years and years to do but it isn't impossible.
Go after the Drug Lords in Mexico instead of fighting across the world would be the first step. Letting the citizens of Mexico handle themselves and let them prosper in their own land. You would be surprised at how many Illegal Immigrants are just trying to get to a safe and secure land.

the gov could work with local officals and data bases across the country it wouldn't be a massive manhunt search. i mean no one said you can round 11 million up in a day it would take years to do, but thats where self deportation comes in for the remainder if they saw the the gov was serious about removing illegal immergrants, many of them would just go back to their home country instead of having the gov seek them out and risk chargers.
Steel you have obviously never worked with a local police department and worked with intermingling hierarchies. It would be a complete drain on police resources to do this and would open a floodgate of violent crime everywhere. And no, the illegals would not simply leave. There are parts of mexico untouched by corruption and drug lords, but you don't get into them without serious money and connections. There's a reason people leave their countries for ours, and it's not the welfare.
I sympathize with both sides of this issue, but mass deportation is not the answer. Securing our border, educating the current illegals, and moving on is the best course of action, though perhaps a forced draft for the illegals could put them to good use if they come with no discernable skills.
who said the police force would do this alone. why do you think we have diff divisions of law enfocerment to tackle diff problems. i know how the system works i worked for the coast guard for 5 years. So it isn't like i know nothing about this issues considering i was one of those people that worked for a division of law enforcement.

Mandatory draft and service for those with no discernable skills (let's say 4 years for a hypothetical) after which they will certainly have skills, some will have died, and the ones coming back can contribute to society and gain citizenship. Why do we get these premature reports. It makes no sense. Let the POTUS divulge his ideas when he is ready.

First thing first. I have a coworker who would love to move back to Mexico to be with his family. He is a legal immigrant and speaks English fluently. The reason he moved to the United States in the first place was due to the drug lords who control the area. If we weren't so focused on our issues across the world maybe we could focus on the issues down south where the hispanic population are literally running to us for aid.
Second. To give these measures to those who are ILLEGALLY coming here would be down right wrong. Those who actually paid and went through the process of coming here LEGALLY should be angry beyond belief to these comments from both parties.
Third. The only reason that both parties are really pushing for this to pass is due to election numbers. They believe that by tapping the resource of the illegal's they will earn their vote, not ours as AMERICAN CITIZENS.
Fourth. The jobs aren't even going to be there for the illegal's if Obama passes the increase in minimum wage to 9.00 dollars an hour because most businesses won't be able to afford those rates. Most will actually just fall under the red line and close up shop. With the exception of the major companies like Walmart and McDonalds. In which case, American's will have to take those jobs unless of course the illegal immigrants take them first.
Fifth and final statement. Do I believe that their should be a wall at our border? No, absolutely not. That will not solve our problem currently. Do I believe in deporting people? No and Yes. The reason I say no is because they do play an essential role at times of necessity, but at the same time they wouldn't come here and work out in the Strawberry fields picking berry's if they could get their homes back in their own country. I say yes, because it is illegal to be in this country without going through the process of becoming a citizen by getting a green card or some other identification. I defend the right that people should live the way we do, as long as it follows the accordance of the people who live here in America.

I have to say that it would be a bad business model, but at the same time what if the business had a large demand for their product before the 1.50 raise, and now they have to raise the price for the product to accommodate lets say the 6 employees they have. The business also could keep the price the same amount to make the product more affordable for the consumers, but now they have to choose between reducing the hours of the employees, or they could just reduce the amount of workers they have and supplement the loss by demanding more of their employees.
They then can't provide for the high demand that their product had, because not only does this company have to think of choosing either option but so does so many other companies reducing the head count or reducing hours of their employees. Therefore, making it harder for consumers to buy the original companies products.
that price rise would be a few cents. Businesses used to be great because they didn't pad their bottom line. They treated employee and consumer like family and the whole system ran fine. It's when greed became too large a force that it all went to hell.
Val, that's the economic idea which has ruined this country. It's not a choice of price increase=less demand, lower wages = less demand, or less hours=less money=less demand (notice the equalizing downside). It's simply a have faith moment. Have faith and do whats right by employee and customer.

Regardless, yes business's pad their bottom line. Of course they do, why else would anyone dedicate themselves to developing a business and risking not only their lives but the lives of those they love. They see a way to make money. That's part of the American Dream, to make a living with the utilities you have.
And also I would be willing to bet that those companies that were treating employees like family are closed now. Must be a bad business model or something.

And you describe a trend which has come about only as a result of reagan. Businesses did not used to pad themselves to the hilt. They cared, now they don't. Our economy was once the envy of the world, now only our consumer market is left and that is dying due to businessmen's incompetence and foolishness.

First off, never called myself a patriot, but thank you for saying that I am.
Second, I live in the South and got laid off by a business that I considered family.
Third, I'm happy you consider yourself indispensable, unfortanutely you can still be laid off or fired if the corporation deems it necessary. Don't make the mistake like I did and get cocky about how important you are as an individual, because I thought the same thing since I could run circles around my employers as well.
Fourth, our economy is going down hill due to tax inflation which may have been a result from the Reagan administration, unfortanutely your arguement is flawed because in the Clinton years we had a surplus and thats really when we were the envy of the world economically. As I recall Clinton was after Reagan when it came to the Presidency. If on the other hand you mentioned Bush Jr. as the reason for the economic downfall I would not argue against that.
Fifth, I believe in small business and plan on running one of my own. Already have a business plan drafted and planning on implementing it when I gain funds and see about getting a lawyer to start drafting situational circumstances and understanding the problems that may come from taxation and employment. The problem is that Walmart is a business that undercuts the competition which in turn drives small business out of the market. While, this is just an example of one super large business you have many others that have the same problem.
Sixth and final statement, if you want to get a point across don't insult people when you can't argue against them logically. Agree or disagree with the statements and refute them if you can, but if you can't don't go off and start insulting people. It won't earn you any points from the community or the individual you are talking to.

Good point, our economy isn't even stabilized as of yet, our unemployment numbers have only increased as minimum wages have raised, our ability to buy the basics of life is hard for those who only have minimum wage jobs and can only find one source of income.
But my comments aren't documented, I suppose I could use common knowledge as a utility though.
minimum wages have not increased in 30 years. Increasing minimum wages will make a few very cheap goods go slightly higher in price. But lower class families will be able to subsist and perhaps gain social mobility, and this will in turn increase demand for more moderate goods, thus being a positive to the entire economy. If big businesses like mcdonalds and walmart take a hit, good, the economy needs competition, not consolidation.
Check your facts Patrick. The minimum wage was 5.25 ten years ago. The Government has since then been increasing the minimum wage over and over again incrementally. They used the excuse that is being stated now back then, "This is to help the middle income families."
Private sector business. Cost per piece is $1. After any increase (labor/overhead), cost is still $1. Cuts take place to maintain this cost. In some cases, cost cannot be maintained, than the selling cost goes up.

There is a demand for cheap labor in this country, and if the immigration system doesn't get fixed the "illegal" workers will keep coming, and there is no way to stop them, they do not come here to steal anything, just to fill in those spaces and get those jobs that most Americans are not willing to do. America needs those people just as much as they need the American jobs. And please don't forget one simple but very important thing...those 11 million "undocumented" people represent 11 million consumers, so either you guys like it or not...they are "customers" and one thing is for sure...A country just like a business cannot survive without customers. Every time you guys go to the grocery store look at your receipt and notice the line where it says "taxes", well those 11 million people are paying those same taxes on a daily basis, now go to a restaurant, a hotel, or any kind of business where you suspect they hire illegal immigrants, ask the owners for the payroll records and you will find that most immigrants pay their taxes even when they can't get high refunds. Those 11 million people represent millions of houses being rented or purchased, those 11 million people represent millions of cars being sold, those 11 million people represent millions of computers, phones and tablets being sold, if you kick them out...you will be kicking your own butt down the hill. What othe American (because they are Americans too) will work for $7.25 dollars per hour? But I guess you people think low prices happen just magically right? RIGHT?
Illegal immigration is a national security and economic security problem with the unemployment high as it is the unemployed and welfare recipients should be in the Fields and at the farms. They can be bringing over chemical, biological, and or regular weapons over along with the drugs. The money is sent home making the US $ worth less and less. Illegal immigration is not just Mexican or Canadian it is of all regions I know from personal experience I have had 1 African 1 Britain, Russian, Canadian, Salvadorian, German, Arab. The problem is no longer illegal immigration (which is bad enough). It's immigration period. We have 20 million unemployed Americans and 5 to 10 million homeless Americans. We have no time to worry about foreigners when we can't take care of our own citizens. What started out as an illegal immigration problem has become an immigration problem period. It's like scratching yourself on a dirty nail - it starts out with a little cut and then you end up with lockjaw.
You are exactly right. Let's also not forget that once these illegal aliens are amnestied and made legal then their hourly wage will increase 500%. Why you ask ? Because now they are legal and will demand more money, at least minimum wage and will no longer be afraid of drawing attention. You can also expect a lot of them to quit their under the tables positions and go and seek other higher paid jobs such as McDonalds, Walmart, K-Mart ect..and then it will all collapse and food and retail prices will sky-rocket. This entire proposed reform will pretty much destroy the United States and put millions of American Citizens into un-employment, welfare and let's just say another "Depression" just like way back when. I live in central Florida, and when I was renewing my drivers license, the examiner next to me was asking this man to look into the scope and read off the letters. He couldn't! She asked him if he knew English, and he said No. So the examiner pushed him through it. I asked this same examiner if she was going to give this man a Drivers License, even though he couldn't speak or read English, and her reply? Welcome to Florida! Immigration rule and regulation is extremely unfair.
If you are from a "favored" country, let say Great Britain, it is easier for you to get a visa to get here. But if you are from a poorer country it is far more difficult.
The requirements for visa are very hard for those who work in 3rd world countries or latin america.
They have to show work history, bank account with so much money into it, own property.
Then they have to pay fees, for us in the US these fees may seem small, but for those in latin america, they are extravagantly high, without guarantee that they will get a visa, fees has to be paid prior to interview.
That is why so many chose to cross illegally, they do not stand a chance to get a visa granted, NOT because they ares criminals, only because they are poor working stiff.
Our immigration system is unfair and need to be return to the original plan, anyone that want liberty, pursuit of happiness can get here as long as they are not criminals, terrorist and so on.
Our government is wrong on only wanting the best of the best to come here, we were to be the light of freedom of the world, what happened???
I speak from experience, tried to get my fiancee here from Peru, paid fees after fees and nothing, contacted our state department for assistance and nothing. after 3 years we gave up.
We need to make rules for everyone, fees based on that country average income levels not ours.
Everyone deserve a chance to come here and live free.
