Easy solution to Chicago's gun violence: Put a sign on every street which says

"GUN FREE ZONE"

Volume 30, Number 2 of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy (pp. 649-694), set out to answer the question in its title: "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide? A Review of International and Some Domestic Evidence." Contrary to conventional wisdom, and the sniffs of our more sophisticated and generally anti-gun counterparts across the pond, the answer is "no." And not just no, as in there is no correlation between gun ownership and violent crime, but an emphatic no, showing a negative correlation: as gun ownership increases, murder and suicide decreases.

Nations with stringent anti-gun laws generally have substantially higher murder rates than those that do not. The study found that the nine European nations with the lowest rates of gun ownership (5,000 or fewer guns per 100,000 population) have a combined murder rate three times higher than that of the nine nations with the highest rates of gun ownership (at least 15,000 guns per 100,000 population).

For example, Norway has the highest rate of gun ownership in Western Europe, yet possesses the lowest murder rate. In contrast, Holland's murder rate is nearly the worst, despite having the lowest gun ownership rate in Western Europe. Sweden and Denmark are two more examples of nations with high murder rates but few guns.

Finally, and as if to prove the bumper sticker correct - that "gun don't kill people, people do" - the study also shows that Russia's murder rate is four times higher than the U.S. and more than 20 times higher than Norway. This, in a country that practically eradicated private gun ownership over the course of decades of totalitarian rule and police state methods of suppression. Needless to say, very few Russian murders involve guns.

I think we have a basic mis-understanding on how the judicial system is failing us.

As well as how our mental health care system is failing us.

Some project their anger at a object ,firearms, in response. Understandable.

Ok , you have a law preventing felons from owning weapons. Can we call that a given??

And selling narcotics does classify as a felony?? another given??

But many of the killings, are perpetrated by gang members, with long wrap sheets?? another given??

So how can we have repeated reports of gang members and just low life's, with extensive violent criminal records committing heinous crimes??

Folks, it's called plea bargaining and parole. See any of these initiatives doing anything about it?? They are actually releasing violent's while non - violent's still look at four walls.

Then you have the mentally ill, the illness cut in funding for decades.

So , at the end of the day, we make laws for mean looking, semi-automatic weapons , whose core actions have been around for over a hundred years.

And expect it to do anything about the core violence?? Semi-autos were around when most peoples grand parents were going to a prom.

Should you look to history? read up on prohibition perhaps....where violence peaked because the government prohibited a product the citizenry wanted?? Wonder , how much cartel & gang profits would be killed if their product was taxed & legal?? Liberal idea?? William F Buckley supported it.

So the political extremes of both sides attack the Bill of Rights, depending on subject. Aclu will be opposing Obama on the internet security act, the prior passed Patriot Act, and the drone attacks. Yes the , 4th, and 5th Amendments. The NRA is stuck defending the 2nd Amendment. Both sides, do not see that our government has grabbed power in reaction to horrible events. They sit on separate bleachers , supporting their team, screaming at each other. While their rights go slipping away.

It's not a Republican or Democrat issue. It is a Constitutional issue.

We are NOT a Democracy, we are a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.

If some future administration got the Congress, and the masses, to vote that all people over 6 foot should be imprisoned. That would be Democratic. Majority rule.

However, while we remain a Constitutional Republic , this scenario, should never happen.

It did happen however to Japanese Americans in WW2. And we should be extremely wary of actions like that, in the future.

Should we emulate the British Empire's colonies?? One of the most oppressive powers in world history?? Don't think so. We fought a couple wars to leave them. Some people are still oppressed by them.

If you like the accent, ok... leave it at that.

Enforce the laws on the books. And be very wary , of anyone , any party, selling you on reducing your Constitutional rights for protection and safety. They are quite safe. What they are accumulating is power.

Fact is that violent crime and gun related deaths have been decreasing over the last decade while at the same time gun ownership has been on the rise.

You can check that with the FBI if you do not believe it.

So if guns kill than should gun related deaths not have gone up along with increased ownership?

Here are a few things that are proven to reduce crime.

Crackdowns on gangs, Community policing, Adherence to the broken windows theory, Expanding American industry, Proper parenting skills and Good people in a community standing up and saying they will not tolerate gangs and crime in their community.

Honor, courage, integrity, trustworthiness, respect, humility, empathy, compassion and love are all noble values. Values such as these will reduce violence. These values can not be legislated. No law will change the hearts of humans.

As parents, brothers, sisters, friends, neighbors, etc we can all be examples of these values and teach others the importance of these values. The ills of a community are the responsibility of each and every member of that community. When the members of a community take on this responsibility, great things happen.

This is a solution that will reduce murders and other crimes. It has been proven effective century after century in countless places.

Yes, they are....and you possess NONE of them!

I will vote for gun control. Criminals have no gun rights..

The amount of gun violence is a testament to how badly its needed. Criminals and gangbanger are armed to the teeth, and its lax laws that are the reason for it. Lax laws, and lax enforcement.

I've read the communist manifesto, and watched the non-practical application of the tenets espoused there in. The Russian revolution culminated in advancing just those principles which led to ruin in less than a century. Hence converting Back to a Capitalist system. Our form of Government A Representative Republic based on the freedom to be free to pursue life, liberty & happiness has served us well for a much greater time than did Communism serve the USSR. T,B,S My argument with your Pharaoh is where, and how, and why, he developed his political ideology, and furthermore the Statements like (fundamentally change) and actions taken & being perceived as not exactly in tune with our constitution core values.

I've read his books, I've read his opinions. I've noticed the mentors he's exposed himself too. The groups he studied with in his formative years and beyond "Bottom line" My determination I simply do not agree with him on leadership or much of any of his Ideas for progressive movement 4ward. Sorry if any of this offends your sensibilities can't be helped. I guess you and I do not agree on much.

I was listening to a primarily African-American Talk radio program this morning, and a person that calls in regularly tried to blame Chicago's violence on Slavery and White People.

The fact is that this discussion which is now on it's 15th page is fruitless, neither side will change the others sides mind. This will be my last post. I am a Democrat and believe that assault weapons should be banned, period. I WILL vote accordingly, rest assured. My fellow Democrats should continue to speak softly and carry a big stick if you no what I mean. The fact is that the Republicans will never cease screaming of their second amendment right to carry war weopons in one breath and tell everyone else that gays can't marry and women can't have an abortion in their next. Republicans believe that rights only apply to them and what they deem to be important.

We have seen so much death and carnage due to assault weapons and are now watching the latest installment of movie like destruction on the Las Vegas Strip right in front of Caesar's.

Repubs!!! You lost now the second election to Obama and maybe it's time to stop stomping your feet in a tantrum and GET OVER IT! Repubs are swiftly setting themselves up to lose yet again over assault weapons and sequester.

I dont hate Repubs, I dont hate anyone but the republicans should make themselves more reasonable before it's too late.
