Senate GOP stalls Hagel nomination by waging filibuster

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee to be defense secretary, on Capitol Hill, Jan. 31, 2013.

Senate Republicans on Thursday stalled further work on confirming former Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., as the next secretary of defense, likely prolonging the fight over the Pentagon nominee for at least another week and a half.

The Senate voted 58 to 40 to end debate on Hagel's nomination, falling short of the 60-vote threshold they needed to move toward a final confirmation vote, and subjecting the former Republican senator to an unprecedented, de-facto filibuster. Four Republicans supported Hagel and one GOP senator voted present, though Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., switched his vote to "no" in a procedural move to be able to bring up Hagel's nomination at a later date.

The vote is only a temporary setback for the White House, which still views Hagel’s eventual confirmation as a likely proposition. President Barack Obama said in a Google+ hangout shortly after the vote that his "expectation and hope" is that Hagel would eventually be confirmed.

“Senator Hagel is going to be confirmed, if not tomorrow then when the Senate returns from recess,” a White House official said Thursday. (The Senate is away from Washington next week and is scheduled to return for work as soon as Feb. 25.)

The Obama administration’s confidence is rooted in statements Thursday by a number of Republicans who have said they intend to switch their vote after the recess and support moving toward a final vote for Hagel.

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell shares the latest news about Chuck Hagel's confirmation vote.

The delay still incensed Democrats, though, who argued that the delay was without precedent and risked leaving the military essentially leaderless during a time of war and as major cuts to the defense budget loom. (Outgoing Secretary Leon Panetta continues to serve in his role until Hagel is confirmed, though he had intended to finish his service this week.)

"I'm going to go call Chuck Hagel when I finish here and say, 'I'm sorry,'" Reid said after the cloture vote. He set another cloture vote for Tuesday Feb. 26.

Indeed, the White House scrambled for much of the afternoon to find the handful of Republican votes that would have allowed for Hagel’s confirmation this week. They released a letter in response to GOP senators’ questions about the administration’s response to the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on a diplomatic posting in Benghazi, Libya, and Vice President Joe Biden worked the phones in hopes of finding the necessary votes to overcome the de-facto filibuster.

The 60-vote threshold means that Hagel’s nomination is, in effect, being subjected to a filibuster. Because Republicans are objecting to ending debate – often a formality in the Senate, where lawmakers give their “unanimous consent” to moving forward with a vote – Democrats must deliver the same 60 votes that they would need under the circumstances of a filibuster to end debate on the Hagel nomination.

Republicans argued that they were not orchestrating a formal filibuster against Hagel – a maneuver which would be unprecedented in the instance of a nominee for the secretary of defense position.

Some GOP senators – led by Sens. John McCain, Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, S.C. – said that they just needed a little more time to thoroughly vet Hagel’s background, despite having served with the former Nebraska senator during the bulk of his two terms in the Senate. Graham and McCain argued that they needed more time than the two days that have elapsed since the armed services panel approved Hagel’s nomination for consideration by the whole Senate.

Simply PRICELESS!

This really makes no sense to me. Why, if they are going to switch their vote after they take a little vacay, couldn't they just finish this off today? Why leave our country's welfare flapping in the wind this way?

Anything to stall. The only thing worse than a divided congress is one that gets nothing done at all. I think we've seen enough and in 2014, these clowns are going to pay for it at the polls, gerrymandered districts or not.

I don't even give a crap about Hagel. He was a Puke just like the rest of them when he was in the senate. The only thing that would be a Win here is if the War Department gets its budget cut about 50%.

Reid could have stopped this FAKE filibuster business three years ago and again just a month ago, but he doesn't want the "Senate to be like the House." A false premise in the first place. If you just make these idiots get on their feet and really filibuster, you will see far fewer filibusters and the Senate will still be different from the house which has no filibusters, fake or otherwise!

Everyone said after the last election the GOP would learn it's lesson. We obviously see they have no intention on letting up on ANY Democrat proposed idea. Hope they enjoy this while they can. Come 2014, they are going to suffer mightily at the polls to the point they won't have the votes in the Senate to filibuster, and they'll once again see Nancy Pelosi sitting behind the President at the State of the Union.. Evidence "rising star" Marco Rubio's pathetic speech the other night, and Rand Paul's ludicrous statements. If they are the best the GOP has to offer, that is a party in deep. The GOP is so far out of touch with reality I'm sure Ronald Reagan is turning over in his grave. The only thing they care about is themselves and party - they could give a flip less about their constituents or this country. Enough is enough.

Hagel lobby for Muslims

Hagel appeared before the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) on June 13, 2008, serving as keynote speaker at the group’s convention that year. The specific session the former two-term Nebraska senator addressed was a fundraising reception for ADC’s political action committee.Researchers at the Investigative Project on Terrorism have also compiled evidence that Hagel spoke frequently to pro-Arab audiences in 2007, a time that predates the period which the nominee was required to flesh out on his confirmation forms.

What I have noticed over the last several presidential elections is that, very early on in the running, the Republican candidates make a BIG show of their support of the military. They go to military bases. They go to the Raytheon, Martin Marietta and McDonald Douglas plants. There is always talk about VietNam and other conflicts, etc.

They do all this to show that they support the military industrial complex and, in fact, rely on it as a primary source of their money and power.

The RepubliCons are @!$%#ting bricks right now over Hagel's view of the non-necessity of our hyper inflated military budgets. They will do everything in their power to keep him from being confirmed.

But why rush, why not focus on the Republicans and paint them as evil and dysfunctional, when and while they can. The tactics of the last 4 years, applied so successfully then, are in play again.

The style of government that served us well in the past is no longer suitable for the “progressive democrat” policies of today! Hello folks, what do you expect from a broken system? Last time I checked Hagel is a Republican. Republicans are now eating their own. Both parties are corrupt. DC has turned into the Beltway Reality Show. I wonder when Kim Kardashian and Snooki will provide a guest appearance?

Other than a few social issues what's the difference between the Democrats and Republicans?

We have a one headed two-party system that pursues the mechanizations of globalism in tandem, not in contest. When both parties have the same desires and goals, when both parties collude to remove civil liberties rather than protect them, and when both parties are funded by the same corporate backers, there is no such thing as change through the process of elections. Anyone who claims that government corruption can be punished through the ballot box hasn't the slightest clue how our system really functions. They think we are still living in the original "America," one that values the voice of the people.

When the government decides to push through banker bailouts, the Patriot Act, FISA, the National Defense Authorization Act, National Defense Resources Preparedness, assassinate American Citizens, lay siege to our 2nd and 4th amendments etc., all while ignoring opposition by a vast majority of citizens, it is clear that the paradigm has shifted and the American value of representation by and for the people is lost.

So really, don't you feel silly choosing sides in the corrupt religion called politics?

Now, don't we all feel better? Now, doesn't that make the 4 dead Americans alive again??

When are we as Americans going to wake up to the fact Republicans don't care about the working class or the security of our troops or country. They want to keep us uneducated so the top paying jobs will continue going to millionaires kids and friends. Just imagine if working class Americans could afford to have the same education as the wealthy among us, we would be able to compete for their jobs. Yes, there has been a few from the working class have made but only a few. The Republicans don't even want to raise the minimum wage which tells me they think earning $7.25 an hour is good enough for the 47% of Americans. Americans need to take a long hard look at what the Republicans want for us working class Americans. They have and are still proving that they are the party of the corporations and will do what ever they need to do to keep Americans uneducated so they can have cheap labor and hundreds of thousands who will join the military so they can make a living. Americans need to use their voice and tell their elected officials to start working for the betterment of all Americans.

Winker, yes, a person who has worked for corporations might just wonder why rich people's kids keep getting hired into the company without previous executive experience and at extreme salaries?? I have seen enough as they cover up for themselves but none know the first thing about the company's products or it's customers. I think more people should quit taking what's handed to them and ask what is going on. It is time to push some buttons. 1% raises seem to be a universal thing in the corporate world these days except for the disconnected execs?? If a company no longer values people that bring a lot of money into a company these then I am pretty sure the competition would love to have them. Take that 1% and shove it.

So the country ends up in a horrible situation (funny the Russians went to Afghanistan before we did and it broke them as it has done to us). Ok have fun i'm off this thread.

So basically what they're saying is the United States will be left without a secretary of defence, even though several senators plan to change their vote to yes when his confirmation comes up after the recess. Absolutely ridiculous. Apparently the GOP are so tough on defence they feel it's okay to leave the top defence position in the country empty for literally no reason.

Seriously, if the Republicans ever manage to take the Senate, I am going to just sit here rubbing my fingers with glee at the sight of their entire base taking to the internet with outrage because "WAAAAAAHHHHHHH, THEY'RE FILIBUSTERING US!!!!" Hipocltal??????

Miguel Angel
Estrada Castañeda
(born
September 25, 1961) is an attorney who became embroiled in controversy
following his 2001 nomination by President George W.
Bush
to the United States
Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit
. Senate Democrats, claiming
Estrada was a conservative ideologue with no experience as a judge, and unable
to block his nomination in the Senate Judiciary Committee after the Republican Party took
control of the Senate in 2002, used a filibuster
to prevent his nomination from being given a final confirmation vote by the
full Senate.

Priscilla
Owens
was nominated on
May 9, 2001 by President George W. Bush to fill a vacancy on the Fifth
Circuit created by Judge William Lockhart Garwood, who had taken Senior status
on January 23, 1997. Senate Democrats immediately decided to block her
nomination for two reasons. First, the Democrats were angry that two previous
nominees that President Clinton had nominated to Garwood's empty seat, Jorge Rangel
and Enrique
Moreno
, were never given hearings by the U.S. Senate
during Clinton's second term because the Senate was at the time controlled by
Republicans. Second, they considered her to be too conservative.
As a result, the Senate Democrats, who controlled the Senate Judiciary Committee during the 107th
Congress
did not let Owen's nomination come up for a vote. In 2003,
after Republicans had taken the Senate back, Democrats filibustered
her
.

Charles W. Pickering , on May 25,
2001, during the 107th Congress, U.S. President George W.
Bush
nominated Pickering for a seat on the United States
Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
vacated by Henry Anthony Politz who had taken senior status
in 1999, but Pickering's nomination was not acted upon favorably by the Senate Judiciary Committee then under the
control of Democratic senator, Patrick Leahy,
a Vermont
Democrat. Nevertheless, on January 7, 2003, President Bush renominated
Pickering to the same position. With the Republicans now in charge of the
committee during the 108th Congress, Pickering's nomination was
voted out to the full Senate. With no way to stop his confirmation, the Senate
Democrats chose to filibuster
Pickering in order to prevent him from receiving a straight up-or-down
confirmation vote.

Judge Kuhl, on
June 22, 2001, was nominated by President George W.
Bush
to a seat on the United States
Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
vacated by the Judge James R.
Browning
who had taken senior status
in 2000. Despite being rated "Well Qualified" by the American Bar Association,[2]
her nomination was not processed during the Democratic-controlled 107th
Congress
due to pressure from several women's groups. Rather, it
became stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee under the
leadership of then chairman, Senator Patrick Leahy,
D-VT.

The Democrats
decided to filibuster Kuhl in order to prevent her from having a
confirmation vote. Her nomination was filibustered on November 14, 2003 when
the Senate failed to end debate with a 53-43 cloture vote,
which fell 7 votes shy of the 60 needed to overcome the filibuster.

Susan Neilson was nominated to a Michigan seat on the United States
Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit
by President George W.
Bush
on November 8, 2001, to replace Judge Cornelia Groefsema Kennedy, who had taken senior status
in 1999. On the same day, Bush also nominated Henry Saad
and David W. McKeague to Michigan seats on the
Sixth Circuit. On June 26, 2002, Bush nominated Richard Allen Griffin to a fourth
Michigan seat on the Sixth Circuit. During the Democrat-controlled 107th
Congress
, all four nominations were stalled
in the Senate Judiciary Committee by then
chairman, Senator Patrick Leahy, D-VT……………………………..

Gee, it's not surprising that you are not getting the full story here on the Obama network. Imagine that they totally omitted that more questions needed to be answered. But, from the people who support the concept that you have to pass a bill to know what is in it, it's not surprising. It's really such a shame that our education system has done such a poor job of educating the students. But, then again, these are the same people who think that a video is responsible for the death of an American Ambassador and 3 others. At least the Obama media admit that they no longer have any pretense of being impartial. After all, about all they can handle is asking Obama what to say and repeating it. Then it's time for a good night's sleep.

Funny thing is, I do wonder if any of them seriously thought that being a reporter meant repeating the party line. As opposed to being more like Woodward and Bernstein and asking real questions and doing actual investigative work.

The saddest part about this is that there are people who honestly don't see this for what it is: The Republicans disrupting government again. They are completely blind to anything bad their party may do, and always blame everything on the other party by default. Record levels of filibuster have been used by the Republican party since Obama came to office, when the entire filibuster rule is foolish to begin with and shouldn't exist. Our esteemed government has clearly shown they can't handle it, and will abuse it when convenient.

Why can't they quit obsessing over their party "morals" and actually help run the government instead of bring it down. They were elected by the people to help run it, not to turn our nation into a dysfunctional laughing stock.

It's interesting how NBC's article about Obama not being able to pay for his programs (which hits at the heart of the biggest issue in our country - the economy) was posted on the website for all of 28 seconds... while an article about Hagel the clown is not only spun as Republicans being obstructionists (as opposed to presenting the viable argument that this guy is simply unqualified) - and is posted on the website for a full day.

Yet another reason why NBC is tied for last with the Comedy Channel when it comes to being trusted to deliver the news (both trusted by a whopping 5%). You can't make this up, folks. So NBC, if you wonder why how to improve your ratings from the sh*tter, try becoming a real, credible news network. Otherwise, enjoy being as trusted as the Comedy Channel... because that's what people do now - laugh at you.

The only way we are going to stop this obstructionism is to come out in 2014 like we did in 2012 and vote. Senators have to run state races, get out and vote against them that is the only way we get rid of them. They feel safe from dems, because we tend to only vote in presidential elections. Lets show them, go out in the same numbers in 2014 and we can change the way Washington DC works.

Bottom line is they are trying to punish Hagel for supporting Kerry instead of Deb Ficsher during the last election. Fischer voted against Hagel because of that even though Nebraskas two other republican senators voted for Hagel. This certainly would not bring me back to the GOP. Hagel has always voted inedpendently of party. That is the thing I like about him. He actually uses his mind instead of being a hand puppet for either party.

Yesterday the story on the guy with the artifical legs who they say shot his girlfriend first said it was an accident. After a while it came out he was arreseted for murder. Goofball Republicans could say that was a coverup also using their twisted logic. This was to be the final nail in the coffin for obama as they moved to dicredit all the good he has done in spite of them and it turned out to be a dry hole and yet they still want more "evidence". If you go back and review the time line on the reporting and keep in mind this is a third world country that is evolving you will find that we did probably the best we could under the circumstances. Other countries turned away our requests to land more Matines where our place were under light to moderate siege because none of them even want our troops on their soil. McCain and the other goofballs do not count in the big picture any more so all they can muster is these feeble attemps to divert their ineptitude and send out their trolls to make it look like they have many more people on their side than they really do. Look at the comments on a non political subject you may find 50-100. On things like this 4-5 thousand. Bad part about it is they think we do not see this. In 2014 we will remember and send a lot of their nut cases back to their home state with their tales between their legs.

Five years ago, I said that Obama would abandon Israel. He is well on his way to do just that, most recently by supplying arms to an enemy of Israel.

Now being the smarmy politician he is, he is trying to set-up a new underling to do his bidding so he can remain free of blame. Hagel is admittedly anti-Israel and is, therfore, not suited to the job. Liberals will never see the true Obama, blinded by his rhetoric. Hitler is rising from the ashes...

@GodOfFate. The success of news networks like Fox are the direct result from the liberal spin machines of the mainstream media. There are examples upon examples of misinformation, spun stories, and even worse yet failure to cover stories. I also find it interesting how the liberals brand Fox a biased network that spreads lies, but never point out a single lie that is aired. Could it be that the truth just hurts?

Besides, Fox News is 47% trusted as a news network, while NBC is 5% trusted. I'm not making it up - thems are just the facts. If the mainstream media wants to be taken seriously as a news network, they ought get back to reporting news. Not creating it.

At least some seem to be genuine, like Chucky Stuart, and outraged by Brennan's actions.

@ Realist17,

Wow. You don't honestly believe that, do you? It's actually pretty simple. Practically ALL the media today spins stories, lies, spreads misinformation, etc. according to their agenda. And Republican media is no exception to this. MSNBC and other are well known to be liberally biased. And FOX news and others are well known to be Republican Propaganda. It isn't just Liberals who call out FOX. I'm an Independent. I call out both for what they are: Biased to their respective parties. Anyone who does not realize this is either ignorant, or in denial due to a blind, one-way party bias. An unfortunate double standard, which is what I had been pointing out in the first place.

I get a kick out of people like you who honestly believe there is a conspiracy against FOX news and the like in the "mainstream media." Is there any better way to make your party sound like a cult than to rail and wail against the "mainstream" people putting you down? What's next, you gonna cry out against "the man?" Oh wait, they already do that with Obama. And you do realize that FOX has higher ratings than MSNBC and CNN combined? Doesn't that make FOX the mainstream media? And not just FOX. Republican media in general gets higher ratings. Not because they are any less biased and deceitful, mind you. But the fact that they have those rating means they are not by any means excluded from "mainstream news." And partisan people on the right buy it hook line and sinker, because it's their side of the media. Hypocrites. They are no better than the very liberals they come here to call out.

Sometimes it takes those of us who can spell or at least proof read and use spell check a moment to comprehend what you are trying to say when your grammar and spelling and lack of punctuation are so horrible . In addition, it's fun to point these things out - you guys are just so silly. Most of you spend a insane amounts of time dwelling on who posts first, you obsessive dislike for Feisty and cutting and pasting crazy conspiracy theories. Not too bright there little buddy, you fell for the lies and then assume anyone calling them lies is lying?? Clearly political bias blinding you to reality. That is the problem with modern America, every POS so sure of what their masters tell them to believe and is true must be. For Goodness sake people THINK!!! That is all, If Bengaizi was a cover up and Obama willing allowed Americans to be killed he should be impeached, but, it does not mean you are a bad person for voting for him..

Try actually thinking critically rather then being willfully blinded by your bias, agenda, or what others tell you. My Party is Right no matter what is an archaic concept. If a politician is speaking it is probably lying and that crosses party lines.....

So the GOP is going to filibuster after several of their members said they wouldn't. This is typical of the GOP, always taking care of big business instead of the people's business. They are scared to death that Hagel would go after some of those fat military contractors and shut down their special projects.

It particularly points up how John McCain's word cannot be trusted.

The vote didn't need to be forced to the floor today. The goal by the Harry Reid Senate is only to make Republicans look bad in the liberal media after there was a request by Republicans for time to shore up the votes for a confirmation. Harry's anomosity towards the opposition may have thrown Hagle under the bus now, especially when Hagle had a yes vote from many Republicans. Great job in working with the opposition Harry! What makes you think there will ever be another Republican cabinet? It seems to me they have alienated female voters, black voters and Hispanic voters. Their pathetic attempt to attract Hispanic voters with Marco Rubio was transparent and lacking. Demographics are not their friend. And you think Romney had some special insight into the middle east or Bush for that matter? A president enacts foreign policy and war policy based on the advice and council of our best and brightest military leaders. A SOD doesn't enact his own policies so comments he's made in the past are irrelevant, he enacts and enforces the policies of the president. Denying a president the right to choose the person enacting those policies is unprecedented.

      Hey John Bryant,

Do you even understand how the budget process works. It starts with the President submitting a budget to Congress. He hasn't submitted one for this year yet and he missed the constitutional deadline again. It's not the requirement of Congress or a party to initiate the budget process as many of you left wing "progressive" hacks profess. It's the responsibility of the President to initiate the process. Then both houses of Congress come to terms and approve a final budget that goes back to the President for his signature. The problem is Harry for 4 years now won't even allow a discussion on the budget in the Senate.

The House has submitted a budget for Senate review every year. Harry has refused to do the work that the Senate officials are elected to do. Why should we continue to have him hold the entire government hostage for his political purposes. In many peoples opinion it is an impeachable disregard for his elected position and one of the reasons we have had the fiscal difficulties and wasteful government spending. Without a budget you have no guideline for controlling the business of governing. But you being the liberal political hack that you are don't understand simple business principals anymore than Harry Reid does.

As an Independent, it infuriates me that I once again will likely be made to vote Democrat across the board. Something I did for the first time in my entire life last year due to the Republicans screwing around like this and not being able to find a viable candidate. (I mean Mitt Romney? Really? I may not be satisfied with how things are, but I won't just vote any tool to office who claims to be a Republican.) Normally I like to vote for a healthy balance, but apparently the two parties can no longer coexist.

The GOP has learned absolutely nothing from last election. They don't have a plan of any kind that is even mathematically feasible. They don't contribute to anything. Record levels of filibuster, the debt ceiling crisis (which still isn't over), and witch hunts designed to change the subject and work as a distraction. (Filibuster shouldn't even exist anyway) All they do is continually disrupt the very government the people of this country voted them to help run in the first place. Oh, and then blame it on everyone else and try to slander their reputation. We can't get anything done in this government, and I'm not voting for dysfunction.

Am I happy with the Democrats? Not exactly. Yes the Republicans, particularly in the House, have been disruptive on record levels. And they have crapped all over many things that could have happened. I still think that despite this, there was more they could have done, better things they could have done, and better ways to do certain things they have done. But at least the Democrats are trying to run a government, even if I don't always agree with how they decide to do that. All the Republicans do is disrupt it and blame someone else. And since we apparently can only have one party in our government, all vote for the one that is the least disruptive.

if you think the democrats are there to help the people. you are severely delusional!!!

both parties are the same .. they are stubborn, both want their way and only their way, neither side will give in to the other and again, neither party cares about the public, only their own pocket book.

      ldo,

Ohio class subs carry 24 missiles each armed with 4 warheads = 96 nuclear warheads.

All 24 missiles can be launched from underwater in less than 6 minutes at targets in excess of 4500 miles

We have 18 such subs and at least 12 are at sea and on station at all times providing over 1100 warheads within striking distance on a moment’s notice.

Funny, I didn't hear Harry apologizing to the American people for holding up all those bills sent over from Congress to deal with the budget and jobs. I guess in Harry's mind it is just fine for one man, Harry, to hold up votes on legislation designed to deal with our nations problems, but it is bad if a group of Senators get together and hold up a vote on one man whose qualifications are questionable, preparedness is sorely lacking and has failed to provide all the information requested to determine his fitness for the position. Harry the hack needs to go before the country can grow.

      Dennis,

The Trident II missile was designed to carry up to 12 warheads, but due to treaties it very well could be 4 per missile. At one point it was 8 per missile. Like you say 12 are at sea, and I know that's because of a treaty that limits the number of nuke subs deployed.

        #2.51 - Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:08 AM EST

        Re@son,

12 is probably correct but I believe the actual number to be classified. I also believe the Polaris (oldest technology) carried 11 warheads each. Also not every sub at sea carries a full complement of 24 missiles.

The origional Boomers only carried 16 missles but there were more subs at the time

The most troubling aspect of the Hagel nomination, besides his lack of knowledge and preparedness, is the fact that Obama agrees with him on his views on Iran and disarmament. Having a Neville Chamberlain like figure in the WH is bad enough, having another as Sec Of Defense is downright dangerous. The following is one of the reasons Obama chose Hagel, so he could be in a better position to go the disarmament route while having the backing of the Sec Of Defense.

"Perhaps the most self-destructive position Hagel had previously adopted was support for global nuclear disarmament, including the specific idea that the U.S. should begin to disarm unilaterally if necessary. In his confirmation hearing, Hagel attempted to deny that he had endorsed that view, but patient cross-examination by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) demonstrated that Hagel had, in fact, affixed his name to that radical suggestion.

          HUH ?????

It is apparent you have not served ONE DAY in any branch of the military.

You're right. I served 20 years, 7 months and 13 days. And you are correct so long as the boosters don't leave the atmosphere to allow a syncronized strike. There is a slight delay between launches; but in the end...it really doesn't matter.

Are you simply not well versed in ballistic trajectories vs launch time to achieve simultaneous impact, or do you have a more basic problem? Perhaps you should watch the military channel from time to time. Here's a hint...Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI). It can be done with artillery as well as warheads.

                Try to keep up.

As an fellow Independent, I can understand your thoughts but, if you are truly independent minded you know that the party out of power always tries to stem the flow of the damage (as they see it) that the other party can do. It is their Duty to resist, not to rubber stamp that is who if works. I know as well as any that all politicians are Pieces of trash and if they speak it is only to lie but, as an Independent we know that BOTH parties are like that and the wings of either are particularly trashy. Our system is not parliamentary like England or Israel where there are multiple parties and they need form a coalition, we have 2 and they supposed to oppose each other. When they do not, god save us all, that is how we got Iraq an d Afghanistan. As much as liberal douches may wish to spin and lie like the politicians Iraq would not have happened if all politicians were not out to 'Do something' after 9/11. Kind of like the silly gun control debates. When both political parties agree 'something must be done' it is best if nothing is done or it will only screw the decent people of the country.

With no other way to block confirmation, the Senate Democrats started to filibuster judicial nominees. On February 12 2003, Miguel Estrada, a nominee for the D.C. Circuit, became the first court of appeals nominee ever to be filibustered. Later, nine other conservative court of appeals nominees were also filibustered. These nine were Priscilla Owen, Charles W. Pickering, Carolyn Kuhl, David W. McKeague, Henry Saad, Richard Allen Griffin, William H. Pryor, William Gerry Myers III and Janice Rogers Brown.Three of the nominees (Estrada, Pickering and Kuhl) withdrew their nominations before the end of the 108th Congress.

There actually were about a half dozen fillibusters over judges and cabinet posts. The democrats did the first one in about 60 years when they went after Migel Estrada.

Democrats take to heart that continuous ranting makes something that is not a fact a fact in reality.

The delay still incensed Democrats, though, who argued that the delay was without precedent and risked leaving the military essentially leaderless during a time of war and as major cuts to the defense budget loom

Go figure...obama is cutting the military and it's budget and the democrats are crying because the mean old republicans are risking leaving the military essentially leaderless during a time of war?????

All the while, people on these threads or whatever you call them, can only bash republicans & democrats and squabble and call each other names like spoiled little children!! Interesting … they have failed to pass a budget since the election yet even without having passed a budget in 3 years the Democrats GAINED seats in the Senate. And the obstruction by Republicans continues after losing seats … fools!
It appears that the public isn't too upset about passing a budget but they are about obstructing.

They must believe everything MSNDC puts out there and the LIES that OBLAMER told all through his term and on the campaign trail. I know both sides LIE, just seems like OBLAMER can tell you the sky is green and they suck it up hook line & sinker. Just shows HOW IGNORANT the LIBERALS really are.

Just to remind you that the President does NOT pass a budget. The House initiates a budget and does the appropriations bills. It is the appropriations bills that the President signs, not a budget. You can google the federal budget process and check it out before you call people ignorant.

The vote is only a temporary setback for the White House, which still views Hagel’s eventual confirmation as a likely proposition

After 4 years of this kind of stuff, I'm sure they're quite used to it. I guess those who live inside the bubble don't understand how badly these obstructionist Republicans are hurting them in the long run.

Keep crying all you liberal hypocrites. Your memories are oh so short. Dems fought and tried to block everything Bush did. You people are pathetic losers. Liberals suffer from a brain disorder that makes you irrational, childish and very delusional. Feisty, Pigotry, Jody, Amy, Beverly and the rest of the liberal clowns are the worst. Last four mass shooters were delusional liberals.

None of the mass shooters were Republicans or NRA members. They were all kids from liberal families. Liberals have a mean intolerant hate streak. Just read their posts. None of them find any reason for gun control, or reasons to support Obama's nominees other than it is "dear leaders" desire. No reasoning, no arguments, no logic, just invective. Intolerance and tendency toward censorship and anti-freedom gun control are characteristics of liberals. Typically all socialists and socialist/communist states tend toward totalitarianism.

What is most ridiculous about it is that there is no valid or intelligent reasoning for blocking this nomination other than their hatred of President Obama. You continue to support these idiots. They will NEVER EVER WIN NATIONAL ELECTION. THEY WILL NEVER EVER WIN THE WHITE HOUSE WITH THESE STUPID IGNORANT VIEWS THAT HAVE NO REAL BASIS IN INTELLIGENCE OR FACT!!

They were all kids from liberal families

Let me help you out here Sammy!

                          Sorry if facts tend to have a liberal bias;

                          1. Nidal Hasan (the Ft. Hood shooter) lived in either Virginia (his state of residence prior to being sent to Ft. Hood) or Texas, neither of which has partisan registration. Therefore the claim that he was a "registered Democrat" is false. I do not know if he voted or how he voted, but I do know that unless he was registered in a state in which he did not reside, that the claim that he is a registered Democrat is FALSE.

                          2. Since Virginia does not have partisan registration there is also no way to tell whether Seung-Hui Cho was a Democrat, but again because there is no partisan registration in the state we can say that the claim that he is a registered Democrat is FALSE. (Update: A more obvious point is that Cho was a resident alien, not a US citizen, so he was not eligible to vote in the US)

                          3. The allegation that James Holmes was registered Democrat was based on a Breitbart blogger Joel B. Pollack, who found voter registration records for a DIFFERENT James Holmes who was about the same age. Alex Jones’ Infowars and other right-wing websites then dutifully repeated the lie without verifying it. It was later determined that the Colorado Theater Shooter James Holmes was NOT registered to vote, as evidenced by this retraction: {Newly-released information on the suspect’s birthdate (which, as indicated in our initial report, was a slight mismatch), combined with new details Breitbart News has obtained about the suspect’s likely addresses, together suggest that the suspect may, in fact, not have been registered to vote.}. However, most of right-wing media continued to promote the lie without printing Breitbart sites retraction. The claim that James Holmes was a registered Democrat is FALSE.

                          4. The claim that Adama Lanza is a registered Democrat has been suggested based not on any evidence that he was registered as one, but on the rather dubious claim that because Connecticut has almost 2 to 1 Democratic registration over Republicans, he was probably a Democrat. (Claim: "Adam Lanza, NewtownConn murderer. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by about a 2-1 ratio in Connecticut. The odds are therefore that the Lanza family are (sic) Democrats.") This of course is a bogus argument to begin with, but even if we were to make the claim that a mass shooter’s political affiliation must be the same as the majority of the people in his area, we can debunk this foolish idea by taking this shoddy analysis down to the local level. Yes, Connecticut voted for Barack Obama, BUT the city of Newtown voted for Mitt Romney. If we look at the results we find that Mitt Romney defeated Barack Obama in Newtown by 7451-6784 votes or 51.7 percent to 47 percent. Republican Senate candidate and Tea Party favorite Linda McMahon carried the city over Democrat Chris Murphy by an even larger margin. Add in the other information we have that Lanza’s mother was a “doomsday prepper” and a home schooler in a Republican-leaning city and we can pretty well dispense with the erroneous assumption that Lanza must have been a Democrat (UPDATE: According to at least one media source, Nancy Lanza was a registered Republican. The source does not provide a link, but the author of this article is seeking further confirmation). We can therefore claim that with no evidence to support the claim, the assertion that Lanza was a Democrat is not demonstrated and that in the absence of any evidence it is likely FALSE.

                          5. Klebold and Harris of course were not old enough to vote and they had no apparent political affiliation. Allegations that they came from families of Democrats or liberal progressives appear to have no sources to substantiate those claims. What little ideology the boys demonstrated owed mostly to an admiration for Timothy McVeigh not Ted Kennedy. Harris’ father was a retired Air Force pilot and Eric Harris wanted to join the Marine Corps. The boys lived in Littleton, Colorado a relatively conservative and affluent suburb of Denver. The claim that their parents were Democrats is UNSUBSTANTIATED. Any suggestion that the two boys were Democrats is demonstrably FALSE.

Great, involved in a war, unrest around the world and the Senate filibusters. A Defense Sec. is not necessary. What a bunch of losers we have in the GOP Senate seats. Thanks guys for putting yourselves and party before the good of the country. I sure know how I am voting and campaigning in 2014 and it will not be for the GNOP.

The republicons are indeed becoming a regional party instead of a national party. Performance talks and BU**SH** walks.

Look at California. We were saddled with republicons and their $40 Billion a year deficits for nearly a decade. Now after only 2 years under Democrat Governor Moonbeam we are looking at a balanced budget!

Hmmmm... I wonder how California did that?

"After years of cutting education and social services to close deficits, California's budget is finally in balance as long as state lawmakers follow Gov. Jerry Brown's guidance to hold the line on spending, the Legislature's nonpartisan budget analyst said Monday."

"He said that while California is on a much better financial footing, uncertainty remains about the federal deficit debate, the state's heavy reliance on wealthy earners, and huge unfunded pension and retiree health care liabilities."

                            Hey dr 821,

God, I hope dr doesn't stand for doctor. What would you be a doctor of...Hmm.... anyway, you cut me to the quick with your incredibly clever repartee, "BG, your irrelavant". Wow, do you write your own material?

Still clinging to the belief that the media is liberal? Well, I think its completely conversatively biased. I think the press doesn't care to maximize its profit by trying to appeal to the greatest cross section of people, no, they are in business to lose business by appealing only to a small liberal fringe, that way they are guaranteed to sell less papers, advertising space, etc. That makes sense to you? Thanks for feeding the stereotype on repubs being knuckle draggin' mouth breathers.

Yeah, Arnold couldn't fix it but he didn't get any help either.

Doesn't California NOW have the highest taxes in the country?

                              @ DEMS

This is funny a question was ask to you DEMS and you do not answer it but knock down the REP why is that may I ask?

If a question is ask instead of calling REP names or knocking down their party why don't you answer the question?

See this is why America is doomed.

Dems think they know it all but when ask the run around the bush and name call. Oh yes I have seen it from the Rep. too but more name calling and bashing from the Dems and never an answer from one of you..

You know this is why you dems need the government if you had to do something on your own you would be lost.

I remember when no-one even Dems wanted the government in their face but now you all are asking for bigger government why is that?

See I have no party I like some things Dems say and I like some thing Rep say. But neither one of you Rep or Dems have moved me to your side.

I just wish you all could see how childish you all are.

The main thing we all should be thinking is what is best for our kids and our family as well as the main goal of America.

If we can't be civil in a blog how to you think they feel in congress.

I loved America like no other when I was a kid everything red, white, and blue.

Now that I am at my dads age I have lost hope for America.. and no longer see a dream for my kids.

One more thing why do DEMS like liars? Bill lied you all love him, Hilary lied you all love her, Obama lied you all worship him like a God.

Tell me why you all like liars because I don't understand I hate liars and don't want them running this country. Why do you?

McCain is NOT our representative. He is not even our Senator. McCain is the world’s greatest loser.

He escaped prosecution in the Charles Keating fraud with the help of his lap dog... Lindsey Graham. He lied about how his arms were broken after crashing a multimillion dollar plane into a Viet Nam rice paddy. He first said the civilians who saved his azz from drowning did it, then he said the soldiers did it. The truth is he did it. According to eject procedure his arms were to be held closely to his chest.

He never learned or his panic was in charge and his arms were broken on ejection.

He cheated on his wife who stood by him while he was in a Viet Nam camp with a blond beer baroness in Hawaii.

Sid was in Hawaii 'recuperating' from the disaster and death of fellow seamen when he nearly destroyed the USS Forestall due to not following protocol.

And he still stands between the release of MIA info from Viet Nam because it may describe his true role in the camp?

Again, Sid is the world's greatest loser and Arizonans are not at all happy with his antics.

But his war chest is so huge thanks to the folks he has 'befriended' that it is almost (I said almost) impossible to unseat him

He is a great poster child for TERM LIMITS.

This loser has never held a job in commerce, industry or service fields always eating from the public trough. And when he retires or gets fired he will still receive a full senators pay for the rest of his life.

                                    That alone sickens the populace!

I can commiserate with you. I am so sorry anymore to say I am from South Dakota- a hateful, ignorant state since it went so red. South Dakota kicked out Tom Daschle and put Thune in. Thune voted against the Violence Against Women Act. Disgraceful. We have one clinic left in the state that performs abortions. It is like being flushed down the toilet, but luckily, most of us forward-thinkers who are stuck in red states just refuse to be flushed. :>) Maybe someday we will see the sunshine again.

I had respect for John McCain at one time. I supported him for president in 2000, sent him money and even knocked on doors for him. But today he's nothing more than a nasty, bitter, vile and vengeful old man who cannot got over his loss in the 2008 election. The sooner he leaves the Senate, the better off this nation will be.

Tammy - You should research Mr. McCain's history while a guest of the Hanoi Hilton before you offer him up as any kind of example. As a VN vet, just sayin...

McCain chose his "torture", and sung like a canary to get medical attention for his self-inflicted wounds. He should take personal responsibility for his own stupidity, and you should stop calling him a war "hero" when he was nothing but a war failure.

                                            Feb. 14, 2013
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Hon. John Roberts has scheduled to hear a case by attorney Orly Taitz dealing with Barack Hussein Obama’s use of forged IDs to be heard in conference before the United States Full Supreme Court.

A Congressional Petition has been posted to replace the Taitz petition that was also removed this new Congressional Petition has taken on a life of its own!

The birther case became less a source of entertainment when New York Times best-selling author Jerome Corsi suggested that the president's nominee to head the Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, may have played a role in removing birther evidence from Barack Obama's passport records. It appears that in 2008, a State Department insider was simultaneously employed by Analysis Corporation of McLean, Va. (then headed by Mr. Brennan) and was reprimanded for accessing (and possibly altering) Obama's passport records.

It is likely that the overwhelming information coming from credible parties cannot be ignored any longer and it might be the reason behind the decision by the Hon. Chief Justice John Roberts to grant Taitz a full Supreme Court Conference on February 15, 2013. This story will be updated as the events evolve.

The case titled Noonan, Judd, MacLeran, Taitz v Bowen provides a mountain of evidence of Barack Obama using a last name not legally his, forged Selective Service application, forged long form and short form birth certificate and a Connecticut Social Security number 042-68-4425 which was never assigned to him according to E-Verify and SSNVS.

Additionally, this case provides evidence of around one and a half million invalid voter registrations in the state of California alone. Please, keep in mind, Richard Nixon was reelected and sworn in, but later was forced to resign as a result of Watergate.

We cannot forget that over 30 high ranking officials of Nixon administration including Attorney General of the United States and White House Counsel were indicted, convicted and subsequently wound up in prison. According to Orly Taitz, Obama Forgery gate is a hundred times bigger then Watergate.

More corrupt high ranking officials, US Attorneys, AGs and judges were complicit, committed high treason by allowing a citizen of Indonesia and possibly still a citizen of Kenya Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barack (Barry) Soebarkah, aka Barack (Barry) Soetoro to usurp the U.S. Presidency by use of forged IDs and a stolen Social security number SCOTUS printout is below.

The only problem is that there is a real conflict of interest on this case. The 2 women that Obama appointed to the Supreme Court would also be invalid as would all of his appointees. I don't even like saying these two women's name that he put on our Supreme Court! Where there is smoke there is fire and Obama is definitely unqualified as a President of our wonderful country. The Senate has to start Impeachment and I do believe that will happen when hell freezes over. None the less I still have hope. It's something new everyday.

None of this is true. First Roberts is NOT 'honorable'. Second Roberts is chemically dependent for life and thus becomes both a suspect and a prime candidate for blackmail.

Third, no one, repeat NO ONE will even attempt to show the truth about Obama (if that is his name) because they fear death, they fear race riots, they fear for their lives and the lives of their families.

Oh yes death to the bearers of truth is the new motto.

Everyone knows that the sperm donor that brought this wretched person onto earth was likely Frank Marshall Davis not anyone named obama. We know that this fraud was born in a Vancouver socialist hospital because at the time (alleged) of his birth his supposed mom was enjoying friends on Mercer Island the sordid place of her teens. She was living in Seattle and enrolled in the University... there are so many records that prove this yet not one of the complicit commie news outlets or the non-complicit fools in cable or TV have ever presented the facts.

They are easy to find. A few dozen investigators others have seen the documents and read the hospital record. No question about the person described being this fraud.

What a bunch of freaks, fools, ignorant and imbecilic people we have, now thanks to the US gubernmunt interfering in the school system through the so called Department of Education

In ten years when this fraud is finally exposed who among you will join e is shouting I TOLD YOU SO!

Oh, now come on, guys - I was able to find Carlene's story quite easily - it's right there in black and white - on Orly Taitz's own web site. Word for word, just the way Carlene plagiarized it and pretended they were her own words. It's right below the part where Orly asks for money to continue her "quest":

"If you love your country, please help me fight this creeping tyranny and corruption. Donations no matter how small will help pay for airline and travel expenses."

.....and right above the picture and link that suggests Orly is now running for the U.S. Senate......in 2012:

                                            http://www.orlytaitzesq.com/?p=375765

Hope Carlene's sent in lots of money for Orly's, ummm, "travel expenses".....

P.S. - The Supreme Court's website apparently hasn't caught up with this "breaking news":

                                            http://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?Search=orly+taitz&type=Supreme-Court=Dockets

Hey, be sure and check out Docket for 12A25 - man, when even Clarence Thomas rules against you, you KNOW you're in trouble!

                                            Carlene -

Per the Constitution, Impeachment starts in the House of Representatives - they act as a Grand Jury. Impeachment then goes to the Senate and they can attend to no other matter in advance of the issue - they MUST act as judge and jury immediately.

It is a very interesting bit of information. Personally, I feel that we, as a nation, need to remove the traitor currently posing as President. Liberals will not agree, of course, but we know how brainwashed they are.

Hey, don't complain about the Republicans. Urge them on. The longer they keep this up the more unpopular they become. What they're doing of course is stupid, but when you look at how they conducted the campaign and who they put up as nominees shows pretty much that stupid is about par tor them. I just hope they keep the obstruction and negativism and hatred of Obama going and going and going because come election time it will all come down on their heads just like it did last November.

I agree with the general theme of the comments. I also believe what comes around, goes around. In other words, at some point there will be a Republican in the White House. When that happens, I am sure the Democrats won't be in the mood to forgive and forget. Politics has become nothing more than a zero sum game.

And Lindsey is so damn scared about being primaried in 2014 he's always has to prove his conservative credientials, lest he be painted as a liberal.

Cracker: What planet were you on last November? Not only did the American electorate re-elect President Obama for a 2nd term, they did it with a significant margin over Romney, your party's idea of a winning candidate. Looks like the American voters had another idea who was the one most capable of running the country. So keep on with your venomous assaults on Democrats, "libtards", and other nasty little comments so that more and more of the voters in America see the true nature of the GOP/Tea Party. You're the best selling point for Democrat candidates we can ask for!

As they are the ones that are refusing to compromise on there sequestor deal. This Hagel guy is a pinhead, if they put him in charge look for Iran to become nuclear in a very short while. As he has said he will NOT go to war with them even if they got nuclear capabilities, he also stated he would NOT back up Isreal if they were attacked by Iran. A worthless POS is all Hagel is.

Carter was the worst president in history but he will be replaced by this one.

Carter didn't get 2979 American civilians killed on American soil and then stonewall the whitewashing investigative body that he underfunded and limited in its scope and powers. Carter didn't get 4.000 US servicemen killed and another 25.000 injured in an unwarranted invasion of another foreign country. Carter didn't ignore all the warnings of a coming derivatives IMPLOSION and need to provide the same FRAUDSTERS who had funded his appointment and stolen re-election campaigns with publicly funded BAILOUTS. Carter didn't saddle us with huge debts and sink us into a recession so large that had it not been for TARP and a $1 TTTrillion Stimulus, it would have been a depression which sank not only our own economy but the world's as well.

Carter was there savior till Oblamer came along now they got a new savior. One of these days they will actually do some research on there own(I doubt it) then they will find it was the DEMS that took out the housing & financial markets, sure it imploded on Bush's watch, yet it was the DEMS policies that caused the whole mess.

The CIA killed him for that at the Federal Reserve bank's behest. LBJ wanted to live, so he went along with the MIC's scam.

None of these Presidents allowed 2979 innocent American civilians to be slaughtered on American soil and then blocked the investigation into their mass murder. Neither "W" or Cheney ever testified while under oath as to what they knew and when they knew it.

Did the sassy pants boy friend of McCain, Lindsey Graham ever serve? All these draft dodging, corrupt ass wipes cannot hold of candle to Hagel but they are going to hold up his approval to get at Obama. They may as well go home and not return to the Senate because they are nothing but useless wastes of time.

Did you serve in the military? Senator Lemar Alexander served 2 terms as Governor of Tennessee (and controlled the state's National Guard military), was President of the University of Tennessee, and visited war zones as a U.S. senator. Senator Cornyn knows the military well. Before he became an associate justice in the Texas state Supreme Court, he moved around the world as a U.S. military family member; his father was a USAF colonel.

Jennifer, stay home until you leave your biased and liberal leanings and give knee-jerk opinions.

Alexander was not in the military but the point I was making is that the Republicans are pissed because Hagel criticized Cheney and the Bush Administration for Iraq and the surge and that will never be forgiven. That does not make his criticism less accurate or his opinion of the lying crook Cheney not true. Cheney lying to the US and Congress so he could profit off the Iraq war should put him in prison for treason. Hagel is also cautious about sending our troops into Iran because the Chicken Hawks in Congress want war.

                                                                                    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/07/chuck-hagel-iraq_n_2427986.html

Hagel is a true war hero from the Viet Nam era and if he was honest about Iraq and cares about our troops, he outshines many who were dead wrong about Iraq and are now pushing for war with Iran. The truth hurts and if you can't handle it, it is you who should stay home.

There are completely different politics at work here.
