Subscribe to RSSUSA Today: “President Obama delivers his annual State of the Union speech Tuesday night, but it will be months and maybe years before we know how well he did. The success of any State of the Union -- addresses that presidents have been giving for more than 200 years -- depends on the success of the policies and laws that are advocated by the speaker.”
USA Today looks at six State of the Union addresses that were influential: 1. The Monroe Doctrine (Dec. 2, 1823), 2. Gold in California (Dec. 5, 1848), 3. The Civil War (Dec. 1, 1862), 4. The Four Freedoms (Jan. 6, 1941), 5. The War on Poverty (Jan. 8, 1964), and 6. Axis of Evil (Jan. 29, 2002).
The AP: “As President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, he presides over an economy much healthier than the one he inherited four years ago. Yet growth remains slow and unemployment high.”
More AP: “The American public will get a competing mix of rhetoric and imagery in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday, a speech that offers a heavy dose on the economy even as it plays out against a visual backdrop dominated by the current national debate over guns. … in the galleries above the rostrum of the House of Representatives where Obama will speak, many of the faces looking down on him will be those of Americans thrust into the politics of gun violence.”
The Hill: “President Obama will use his State of the Union speech Tuesday to turn public opinion against automatic spending cuts and argue that some of the money to replace the cuts should instead come from higher taxes.”
“President Obama is expected to launch a serious second-term push on climate change with his State of the Union address,” The Hill writes. “With climate legislation dead in Congress, green groups are hopeful that Obama will follow the ‘we must act’ mantra of his inaugural address and put the full weight of his executive powers behind their agenda.”
The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent presses Obama to be aggressive. “If Obama makes good on the threat to be aggressive, there will be a great deal of gnashing of teeth among Republicans — and even neutral commentators — about his lack of “bipartisan outreach.” But Obama’s victory demonstrates that there is an emerging majority coalition of minorities, young voters, and college educated whites, especially women, that broadly shares his vision of governing.”
The GOP response: “Republicans intend to cast President Barack Obama’s second-term agenda as more ‘big government’ and offer a series of steps to boost economic growth and reduce the federal debt, countering the president’s agenda with competing visions for the country,” AP writes.

There are a host of things that could/would make this country a better to live. In my opinion there is no doubt about that.
It is my hope that the President and Congress focus on each matter one at a time. get each thing done and then move on to the next.
When attention is scattered to many things at the same time it gets confusing and makes for a more difficult course to accomplish each.
It's my opinion that if the President and Congress focused only on the economy first and foremost they would have a better chance of helping to grow the economy and getting people back to work. Once that is accomplished, move on to the next issue that needs the Presidents attention and start on that.
It's okay to state his agenda in the STOTU, but keep focused on main issues and accomplish each one at a time.
No, I will not be watching the SOTU speech...
If I wanted to watch someone getting screwed I'd watch the playboy channel...

More "words" from Obama ... i wonder if he will say anything at all about those pesky little BUDGETS that he has never had during his entire first term. Do you think he will talk about the $5.8 trillion in debt he has run up ?

Then you won't be here tomorrow commenting on the President's speech Moocher? There's a good chance you'll be here bright and early commenting on the speech you didn't watch. You guys have done this for the last four years, you say you're not going to watch or listen, or you didn't watch or listen to the SOTUP, but then you're here all day telling us whats bad about the speech you never watch or heard. And then you wander why people think you a joke.
The success of this State of the Union not only depends on the success of our President's policies ; but also by the advocacy of the 53% of the popular vote of Americans who voted for President Obama and 332 electoral votes.
A lot of garbage words there Bev, nothing new from you. It starts with Obama's campaign promise to cut federal spending as part of the "balanced approach" he campaigned upon. Obama has already raised taxes twice .... once through Obamacare and again as part of the "fiscal cliff deal".
It starts with holding our President accountable for his statements. It starts with a BUDGET .... which Obama has never had. Growing government requires more tax dollars we don't have.
Remember, Obama was not elected DICTATOR, and the House and Senate are designed to pass legislation .... not to rubber-stamp Obama's mandates !
Jim you're going to have to get some of your own material and quite just repeating the same old lies you get from Fox.
Jim, nothing Bev said was "garbage." As I see it, she is saying, if the people who voted for him want to see his policies succeed, they themselves have to put their shoulders to the wheel in getting immigration reform enacted, sensible gun controls in place to reduce the violence, and policies in place to combat climate change. You can't just cast your vote for President and expect him to carry out these policies, without continuing your involvement. How is that "garbage?"

The House has focused on everything except the economy! Things like: Womens reproductive rights! Repealing the ACA! Naming post offices! Reaffirming "In God We Trust"!......
