Nugent appearance at State of the Union a potential distraction for GOP

Here’s this year’s version of “You lie.”

Ted Nugent, the rocker and current gun-rights advocate, will be in attendance at Tuesday’s State of the Union as the guest of Texas Congressman Steve Stockman.

Stockman has said he would consider filing articles of impeachment about President Barack Obama for his gun-control push following the shootings in Newtown, Conn. Nugent is a board member of the National Rifle Association. Many Democrats have invited victims of gun violence to the address.

Stockman will also be livetweeting the address – with the hash tag #youlie, “debunking myths and fact checking,” his office said.

"I am excited to have a patriot like Ted Nugent joining me in the House Chamber to hear from President Obama," said Stockman in a press release of the man who was under Secret Service investigation last year for comments made about the president. "After the Address I'm sure Ted will have plenty to say."

Ted Nugent performs at Ruth Eckerd Hall on August 6, 2012 in Tampa, Fla.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is bilingual has been at the center of a Senate push on immigration reform, is delivering the official GOP State of the Union response. But Nugent's appearance, and the promise that he "will have plenty to say," has the potential to distract and be a headache for a Republican Party looking to re-brand itself, particularly in tone, after President Obama won re-election this past fall.

More on Ted Nugent from NBCNews.com

Nugent landed in hot water with the agency in charge of protecting the president, because he said in April of last year at a national NRA meeting that if Obama was re-elected, “I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”

In the same set of comments, Nugent called the president, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “criminals,” said the “government is wiping its ass with the constitution,” and equated Democrats to coyotes who should be shot.

“If the coyote's in your living room pissing on your couch,” Nugent said, “it's not the coyote's fault. It's your fault for not shooting him."

Stockman is also set to unveil what he’s calling, “The Obama Failometer, a ten-foot-long billboard that will objectively measure the failure of Obama's economic policies … The ten-foot-long Obama Failometer billboard will be displayed in the corridor of the Capitol's Cannon House Office building at Stockman's 326 Cannon Office.”

Stockman, who previously served one term in Congress in 1995-1996, is back for the first time since.

@Feisty - Apparently Mad Max is afraid of girlfriends - apparently they spill the 'dope' on him - a bit to freely.

By his own account, Stockman spent time homeless as a young man, sleeping in a Fort Worth park, looking for food in trash cans and going by the street name "Max." He has been jailed more than once, he has said in interviews, and was charged with a felony after one such incident when authorities found Valium in his pants; he said a girlfriend put the pills there, and the charge was later reduced. http://www.kjonline.com/opinion/steve-stockman-used-to-be-fringe-now-hes-just-one-of-the-gop-gang_2013-01-19.html

The Republicans sure know how to pick their allies. The rocker Turd Nugget who was quoted during the Presidential election as saying:

"If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this remark by itself grounds for commitment to a mental institution because he poses a threat to himself or others ?

See, this is why we can't sell Texas back to Mexico or let them secede.

That's right, skip... Mexico doesn't want Texas back. Look who represents their state in Washington!

This wacko Stockman obviously has no respect for Congress, for the Presidency, or for the American people. He should be ashamed of himself, inviting a deranged 'rocker' (OFF his rocker) who has said vile things about the POTUS and is as phony a patriot as they come.

Texans, vote Steve Stockman out of office. He's making your whole state look stupid(er).

It's interesting reading the rantings of the Obama Zombies, on here, I used to think they were just Your typical Marxist Socialist followers of Comrade Alinsky and his main community organizing pupil, Comrade Obama, doing the same, tired old tactic of denigrating their opponents, to gain political advantage, but unfortunately , I have found after reading the comments above, They are indeed merely simple, Obama "Zombies",creatures who have a human appearance, but are totally incapable of independent thought or action, and are forced to perform" tricks" for their masters in order to be given their "treats" as demonstrated by the same boring regurgitation of the same tired old lines, over and over again, Ted Nugent! Boo!!,(listen to them scream! LOL!),but, who at the same time must attack and feed on the same living and productive people they despise, for their very existence."We want to take away other peoples guns cause we be frightened little sheep and our masters told us that if they are forced to give up their guns, that they'll take GOOD care of us sheeple, that they'll give us more money for our welfare checks, foodstamps for free food,(and you can always sell them for your booze, drugs, or smokes), our free birth control,(or free abortions to kill our preborn children if we forget or no one tells us to take our free pills), free education,(or indoctrination), free citizenship,(even zombies from other countries want to feed on the body before it dies cause they deserve it, cause,cause.........well, ..........just cause)", What a country, what pathetic excuses for Human life you have let yourselves become, as Benjamin Franklin once said, "Those who would trade their freedoms for security, deserve neither", and with the rise of the Obama Zombies, We are seeing that premonition come to pass before our eyes.

Well, we know where the 30 grams of cocaine will be, or did he give that up when he found God, er, em, Patriotism.

Shows how little you know about nugent, he's been drug/alcohol free for friggin decades, one of the few rock stars that has kept it that way.

Is it any wonder they want to slash education funding?

Maybe it's because the liberal way of throwing more money at it hasn't been working? There are far deeper issues with our pre-college education than money. Or maybe you can tell me why my 14 year old son was never taught how to read/write cursive? Why did I have to teach him long division myself? Why did they hold back the 5th grade class with the 4th grade class? What our politicians (both parties) have done to our schools is beyond reproach. Bush's 'no child left behind' was complete bull@!$%#. Let's punish the smart kids by holding them back to the same level as the average or less than intelligent kids. That way we have a bunch of mediocre kids that can't even pass their grade level in math/english. Seriously, get rid of the DOE, and get education back to the way it was when our kids were actually challenged and learning. You want to know why our kids aren't being educated? It isn't because of money, you need to look directly at our politicians and the teachers union.

Ted Nugent is a person that most people have discovered during the last election had been an unknowable person.

Nugent is an extremely good musician that has been known by many people long before the election. Have seen him three times, and will go again if he comes around here again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this remark by itself grounds for commitment to a mental institution because he poses a threat to himself or others ?

If that's what can get him thrown in a mental institution then most of the posters on this thread would be in the white jacket at this time :)

Any links to back that up? (or are you talking about the 17 year old he hooked up with back in the 80s? That doesn't make one a serial pedophile offender.)

First, he wouldn't be able to own all of his guns if he was. Second, he's been married for decades to the same woman, his first wife died in a car wreck.

What I would like to see is actual proof, not the he said she said bull@!$%# that is so prominent in the political media.

I don't agree with some of what nugent does, like his canned hunting expeditions. I happen to be an animal lover that doesn't agree with trophy hunting and hunting for sport. While I'm a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment, I feel he's a bit over the top on guns. But that doesn't mean I don't like the guy. To say that would be to say I don't like gays because they are.... well... gay. I don't agree with it, I don't understand it, but that's them, I don't hold it against them, live and let live.

Picking someone polarizing that even people on your side politically may not like or want to be as a spokesperson for your cause is not a bright idea. This may fire up Stockman's core base and some of the extreme right in the GOP core, but it doesn't help the GOP mainstream or moderates at all. Ted Nugent is the total opposite of what they need to attract more Women, Latinos, and other minorities to the Republican party and could end up doing the GOP some long term harm in softening its image to the voters they want to attract.

I have a feeling that when Stockman does come up for re-election, he won't even make it through the primary challenge as payback from the mainstream GOP.

Liberals/Progressives wake up every morning with the sole intent of finding something that offends them. It must be terrible to go through life constantly looking for another opportunity to be a victim.

I can't think of even one reason it would be any kind of a "good idea" to bring Ted Nugent unless Republicans expect to act in the most ignorant fashion in the history of the United States.

Read Nugent's interview in High Times magazine about why he did what he did. He comes right out and says that he had a new career in music and was having too much fun to want to get his a$$ shot off.

I had a wife and a job, too, but I didn't crap myself to avoid going. it wasn't "draft resistance" in Nugent's case; it was pure, unadulterated selfishness. Calling it draft resistance is an insult to those who went to prison or left the country. At least they stood by their principles.

People in glass houses, we're all broken in one way or another. Like it or not, the President, and anyone else working in our federal government for that matter, swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. The 2nd Amendment thereof reads as follows,

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Note that the right being granted to us, we the people, is to "keep and bear arms." The preceding portion is merely a statement of necessity and the ending is a directive to all. Shall not be infringed is clear; whereas, the word infringe, which means to encroach or trespass upon, and accordingly the word encroach means to make in roads to. The point being, when our President, or any other representative, promotes making inroads into restricting or controlling the right to "keep and bear arms," he or she is acting to undermine the Constitution and are inviolate of their oath of office; which is an undeniable grounding for said representatives impeachment; more so than telling a lie to the people was.

            #1.115 - Tue Feb 12, 2013 12:47 PM EST

First, it's the SCOTUS who makes the determination as to whether a law is unconstitutional, not you.

Second, it's Congress who makes the laws, not the President.

Third, it's not an impeachable offense to pass (or to suggest) a law which the SCOTUS later determines to be unconstitutional.

And I'm guessing from your post that your position on the 2nd Amendment is that there can be no restrictions on the type or number of weapons owned by any citizen.

Based on your reasoning that means that the entire SCOTUS must also be impeached.

I guess Stockman must think the rest of his constituents are as ignorant as he is on the grounds for impeachment and the process for it.

Stockman has said he would consider filing articles of impeachment about President Barack Obama for his gun-control push

The House Judiciary Committee decides whether or not impeachment is warranted. He's not even a f*cking member of the Committee. Then they have to begin a formal investigation after which they can take a vote of the full House on the Articles of Impeachment. Then they have to reach a 2/3 vote in the Senate to convict, which would never happen.

But all this is moot because Stockman's whole premise is that Obama is violating the Constitution. Yet the only ones who can say that is the Supreme Court. Stockman's nothing but a newly elected idiot trying to make his mark by kissing Teaparty ass his first month in office. Hell he made up this Lie-o-Meter for outside his office. I'm tempted to build a Bull@!$%#-O-Meter for his crap as well.

And, by the way, you can't "impeach" the President just because he's black.

Who else but a crazy Texas politician would invite Ted Nugent anywhere?

A sample of Stockman's "thinking" includes this quote: "'The Branch Davidians were executed … because they owned guns that the government did not wish them to have,' he warned in Guns and Ammo magazine."

The more telling aspect of this bad move is, the teabaggers continue to support ignorant azzwipes like this guy, and wonder why the rest of the country is backing away slowly.

If Ted Nugent goes to the SOTU tonight with the idea of making trouble or trying to insult or embarass the President of the United States, then we can take that as a sure sign that Nugent picked one of the two options he gave himself.

“If the coyote's in your living room pissing on your couch,” Nugent said, “it's not the coyote's fault. It's your fault for not shooting him."

And so goes the mental state of the Teagag GOP. Seriously folks, this guy's not even a respected guitarist in the music industry anymore. Really never was that great compared to many others that could blow his a$$ off the stage. His only success was in 68 with Journey to the Center of the Mind, which he didn't write, and then again in the mid to late 70's when he had Derek St. Holmes singing for him. Other than that, nothing but skoal packers attend his concerts these days. The guy's a joke and the more he laments, the better it gets for us. So keep going dumba$$. We enjoy the humor.

No. I'm afraid that would be playing right into his hand. That's what he wants. It would make him and his ilk think that we're afraid of them, which is hardly the case. Let him in. Never once did he speak disrespectfully towards the President, even while opposing him. Nugent, on the other hand, is pure draft-dodging filth.

I can't stand his music or his political views, but he has done some wonderful, charitable things for the City of Detroit and has stayed as a resident. That punk assed Nugent moved away years ago and now is neighbors to Dubya down in Texas. That's okay with me. Stay down there with the rest of those loons who hate this country.

Maybe they do, but it is only for lack of any rational alternative. I voted for Mr. Obama in '08, after voting Democratic for 40 years. Mr. Obama lost my vote after his first year in office when he failed to live up to his promise to put an end to the Bush policies. Mr. Obama has extended the hated Bush policies and made Bush's crimes his own. Why have most Democrats failed to recognize this and manage to turn a blind eye to the abuses of office now that "their guy" is in the White House?

The foucs should be on the inviter, Steve Stockman from the 36 district of Texas. It was a newly created district after the 2010 census.Solidly GOP.

Stockman has now returned to Congress after 16 year absence.

He is weird to say the least. He has only a gun agenda. Accused Cinton after the Waco affair of only wanting to ban guns.

He did not vote for Boehner for Speaker in Jan.

But he is on the FOREIGN AFFAIRS and SCIENCE committee! go figure....

Now he get more press for his stuipd invite of the TN and saying he is ready to file articles of impeachment of Obama.

This looney tune is the poster child for the GOP problems with the general public.

They can win some Congressional districts but nothing more.

Great...a night where the Republican focus should be on a rising star from my state of Florida, and instead, I'm gonna have to listen to Ted Nugent say something crazy after the SOTU and likely take that focus away. As a Republican this just drives me nuts that this guy decided to extend that invitation.

                      Frank Grimey,

What do you think of Doctor Benjamin Carson? I watched him at the National Prayer Breakfast, he was very impressive. He would have been a better choice to attend the State of the Union.

Ted Nugent, what was he thinking!

                      Hi all...

Jody...sadly yes, I can see him doing or saying something stupid, before, during, AND after the SOTU. Ugh...really, really poor judgment on the part of that Congressman.

As for SF's question, I think it's a bit too broad of a brush to say that ALL Republicans don't give the Presidency respect. I'm a Republican and I most certainly have respect for the President and the Office. That being said, I believe that the issue is the extremes of the parties and how vocal they are. When President Bush was in office, there were certainly plenty of people on the left who gave no respect to him or his office. And now, with President Obama in office, there are a lot of people on the right that show no respect. I think what makes it seem louder now, is that the far right part of the Republican party has seized the megaphone from the rest of us and hasn't let go since 2010. And this is certainly evidenced by how many primaries of late, particularly at the Senate level, have gone to whoever is the MOST conservative. The tea party segment of the party is so vocal that they tend to drown the rest of us out and it gives the appearance that they speak for all of us. And it's the tea party segment that is least likely to respect the office of the Presidency when a Democrat holds the office.

Disclaimer...I answered this pretty quickly...maybe I'll put a little more thought into it and give you a better answer tomorrow. :-)

Edited to add: Thetotas...I have heard that he is an impressive guy. First of all, he is possibly the best pediatric neurosurgeon in the world...so he's obviously brilliant. I will admit though that I have not had time to watch his speech at the National Prayer breakfast. Will try to fit that in. :-)

Why do you feel the need to defend this guy Nugent and the moron that's bringing him to the SOTU? Is it because you relate to both of them? Do you truly respect Ted? Is he really the face of the party that you want as representative of your party? Don't you want your party to be better, to be respected? You guys talk about Dems as sheep, but look at you and others like you. You are the sheep. You'll back anyone as long as they are yelling and screaming about Democrats. Have a little integrity, why don't you. Ted Nugent? Really?

Why is it you always feel the need to play defense? I don't think you would be ousted from the party if you voiced disapproval once in a while, or is the party so cultist now that to go against them is tantamount to treason?

I realize that the "normal" Republicans are afraid to stand up against the likes of Stockman for fear of losing votes, but I am positive that they are losing more votes, including mine, from middle America by pandering to this lunacy. Every decent Republican member of Congress should be going on record condemning Stockman's poor judgement and it is up to members like you to stand up and hold them accountable.

Still the same, thank you for being a voice of reason in a party that appears to have gone crazy.

Frank, what's stopping you and others who claim to be moderate from voicing your objections to having tea party mindsets taking over your party? Surely you don't want to be identified as being the same as they are? Maybe you can explain why you stay with them or at the very least denounce them? This kind of behavior has been going on for over four years now, I fail to understand how any fair minded moderate leaning citizen would want to be under the same tent as the extremists in their party. Furthermore, if you think the level of disrespect shown to President Obama was the same for President Bush, all I can say is, where have you been? No one ever shouted out 'you lie' at a SOTU of George Bush, no one ever wagged their finger in his face as Jan Brewer did to Barack Obama, these are just two examples of the rudeness and disrespect shown to our President..... George Bush sent so many of our troops to their deaths on lies but no one interrupted him at a SOTU in fact disagreeing caused one to be labeled unpatriotic.

I can imagine there are plenty of moderates and conservatives who are shaking their heads and wishing Mr. Stockman hadn't provoked these headlines for his STOFU invitee. We also wish there weren't the Akins, or Bachmanns, and plenty of others out there.

However, elected representatives were elected by the people they represent, and the people they represent chose them to represent them. Therefore they are speaking (theoretically) on behalf of their constituency. To silence them, or keep them in line, would be to silence and control the voices of their people.

We can disagree with the views of others. We can make the case for our way of thinking. We can even listen to opposing views and try to figure out why people feel the way they do. We tolerate view points and respect others opinions even when they don't align with ours. To assume one person's decisions and views speak for everyone in a party is making too broad of a generalization and isn't fair.

As far as who is or was treated with more disrespect or rudeness.....it really shouldn't be a contest. Google Code Pink for a reminder. Or see http://www.zombietime.com/zomblog/?p=621

Never seen this country more divided, hate-filled, and headed towards ruin faster than any of our fore-fathers would have ever thought possible. The American people following him are being led like lambs to the slaughter and praising him for doing so. He's taking this country down from within just like his immortalized Dad wanted him to. His muslim friends are praising Allah that so much damage could be done by one man in such a short time to such a once mighty country.

Oh, sure, NOW the GOP is going to pretend to be interested in facts? Whatever happened to...

Didn't Nugent promise he'd be dead or in prison if Obama was re-elected? Why won't he keep his word? I say lock him up in a cell w/ Kwame Kilpatrick, they are both former Detroiters who moved to Texas, seems like they'd get along splendidly.

Ummm, no toto, I am making fun of Lindsey Graham because he won't come clean with who he is. I would actually have respect for him if he did finally say he is gay, but he won't because he knows that his fans back home would end his career. So, little Lindsey plays the back door (OMG, no pun intended) and pretends that nobody believes him to be gay.

For the record, I don't care who you are, any gun that is pink is really stupid.

Thank you, Bali Bob, and yes, you presumed correctly. No, toto, what is hypocritical is Lindsey Graham's anti-gay voting record. It's only a matter of time before he screws(literally) with the wrong people, and he is formally outed whether he likes it or not. He is living on borrowed time, I would say.

You do realize that your he-man hero Ted Nugent spent a month pooping and peeing on himself while eating himself to near death to avoid the Vietnam draft, right? Before you start throwing the word "wimp" around, you should look up the definition of 'cowardly, draft-dodging chicken-hawk war monger'.

the draft ended the year I turned 18, so I was never called to serve. Unlike your hero, who defecated in his pants for a week to avoid military service. And no, that's not a rumor either. He himself, admitted it freely to reporters when he was a relevant entertainer to those who opposed the Vietnam War which was many more than those that supported it. So good luck trying to walk that one back, tough guy.

ted is a character, no doubt about it. he also makes sense some times too.he likes to exercise the first amendment, freedom of speach.like the rest of us do on face book and other media. preferably without secret service giving us a visit.generally bitching is healthy. its the ones who dont say anything until they plow that are the most dangerous. think a moment, why did writers of bill of rights put 2nd amendment right after first amendment? do you suppose they put it there to protect the first amendment? how long do you think if we let gov erode the 2nd amendment we will have the right to critisize politicians, with minimum fear of a visit from their hired gunmen! or the right to vote? as long as we the people are armed . we are we the people.! unarmed, we will be just subjects, at the mercy of the ruling class. the king and queen etc. who will decide what is good for us, what we need and dont need.

the citizens of Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Australia and The Netherlands are not armed as we are. Are those governments oppressing those citizens?

Hence the problem with people like Nugent, and you, calling their opinions of the Constitution facts. There are serious disagreements about the meaning of the Second Amendment. I've read opinions from Constitutional scholars who claim that the meaning of "Bear Arms", as defined by the dictionaries published at the time of the Constitution's writing, is to serve in the military. Combined with the clause in the Second about a "well regulated militia", it is plausible that your, and Nugent's, interpretation of the Constitution, is erroneous. Your claiming that the Second Amendments purpose is to protect the First Amendment references the seditios notion of people like Ted Nugent who believe that they have a "RIGHT" to shoot members of our government in defense of what they believe are constitutional violations of their rights. THAT is the most troublesome aspect of the gunrights movement, embodied by the NRA- that they have a right to overthrow our government. THEY DO NOT. Our revolution, so often cited as justification for such seditious notions, was against a government which ruled us without our having voted it such authority. Where our government is freely elected, the ballot box is the ONLY legal and acceptable way to change our government. Any suggestion by people like Nugent that they have a right to armed revolution is nothing but sedition which should be punished to the full extent of the law.

If you would all just shut-up and listen to what is being said....what do you think our forefathers meant when they said "bear arms"? What did they need weapons for? to join the military? You know the old song..."you don't know what you've got till it's gone...". Stop being so naive and looking to big daddy govt for the answers. Our Constitution is our freedom!!

....what do you think our forefathers meant when they said "bear arms"?

Their fore fathers burned people at the stake for being witches.

Their fore fathers thought the world was flat.

Their fore fathers thought the sun and planets revolved around the earth.

Their fore fathers thought that dinosaur bones were proof that gods and giants were real.

Apparently, fore fathers can have their heads in their lower oriface.

OK cassis, I'll speak slowly for you. You speak of weapons, but the Constitution says nothing of "weapons"- it speaks of the right to "bear arms". It has been argued by constitutional scholars that the definition of "bear arms" at the time of the constitution's writing, was to serve in the military. I'm not saying that's right or wrong- I'm simply saying that just because you think the constitution means something doesn't make you right- you present your opinions as fact. How many months did we have to listen to your ilk decry ObamaCare as "unconstitutional" only to see you made fools of? One thing we learned from that particular battle is that you conservatives/ TeaPartiers don't know the first thing about the Constitution!

That makes him no less a dirtbag though as his draft dodging has come back to haunt him (as it should). HE IS NO PATRIOT!

Brian - the people who elected President Obama have higher education than those who vote for Republicans. Your whine about the poor and needy shows my point exactly - a total lack of education and intelligence! And, no one is trying to curb your freedom of speech - it's fun to watch you make a fool of yourself!

And, your post had no point - which is exactly what we expect from low information voters like you. As usual, seeking sanity in the Republican party but as you and others like you are quick to prove - none exists!

And the FBI could clearly be investigating Nugent since he advocated shooting the President. Actually, I guess it would be the Secret Service!
