McCain won't participate in Hagel walk out

The committee vote for Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary is set for tomorrow.

Top Republicans on the committee are threatening a walk out, but John McCain (R-AZ) isn't one of them.

“I will not participate in any walkout of tomorrow’s Committee vote – an action that would be disrespectful to Chairman [Carl] Levin and at odds with the best traditions of the Senate Armed Services Committee," said McCain, who previously served as ranking member of the committee.

McCain and Hagel, who both served in Vietnam, were Senate allies until Hagel split with McCain over his criticism of the surge in Iraq, which McCain proposed.

McCain gave Hagel a hard time for that stance during his confirmation hearing, demanding a yes or no answer to whether he was right or wrong about the surge. Hagel refused, and instead said Iraq may have been the worst foreign policy decision since Vietnam.

But, despite that tension, in the days since that uneven testimony, McCain, who says he's leaning against Hagel's nomination, has come to Hagel's defense, arguing against the outright blockage of Hagel's nomination.

Days after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) left open the possibility of filibustering Hagel's nomination, McCain came out against that.

Then, after Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and James Inhofe (R-OK), the current ranking member of Armed Services, said they would try to block Hagel, McCain is saying those efforts go too far.

For Hagel's part, NBC's Michael Isikoff talked to Chuck Hagel’s brother Tom, who says Chuck Hagel will not withdraw. In fact, he’s going to “fight harder.” Tom Hagel says the only way he’d withdraw is if the White House wanted him to, and the White House is sticking by him.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he would hold a full Senate vote on Hagel either Wednesday or Thursday, reports NBC's Mike Viqueira.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this post reported that McCain was going to vote against Hagel, but McCain has not made a final decision. He is, instead "leaning against" Hagel.

You mean to tell me McNasty is finished making a fool out of himself?

Well, by golly, if Hagel was good enough to serve under a McCain presidency, he's good enough to serve under President Obama!

Shame his BFF Graham didn't get the memo...

Good Lawd - the gremlins are positively ravenous today!

The repugnants are ALL leaning against Hagel right now... He's the only thing holding them up!!!

I'm not completely familiar with the new decorum and manners on the hill.... If they walk out, do they need to be invited back, or can they just pick and choose when it's time to do their jobs?

If they'd claim to have a tummy-ache from eating one of their own we'd understand and allow the use of sick time...

Unfortunately, "the maverick" moments have become less and less, and the angry, bitter, and forgetful McCain moments have become the norm.

I think they're called senior moments.

The Rep/T.P. are spending far too much time and their wages on this Hegel distortion. There should be a way to stop this attempt to disable a government nomination. The President may have been trying to show by-partisanship in choosing a Republican nominee, but the party of dis function will continue to attempt to disrupt and to try to stop our elected officials to form and run our government,no matter from which party of Congress from which they are chosen.

I'll give McCain a pat on the back for his latest and more sensible response to the threatened filibuster, blocking of Hagel's nomination and the "walk out" threat. Maybe McCain watched himself on tape after the Hagel hearing and realized how hateful, nasty and ugly he looked and behaved toward his friend, Chuck Hagel.

Republicans don't need President Obama to "annihilate" their party, they're doing it all by themselves. 5-year olds behave better than these elected Senators.

The biggest thing they have against Hagel is his opposition to the warmongering defense machine that he wants to clean up. stop some of the waste from things like $400 hammers and toilet seats.

Well, if the Republicans were to walk out it would remove some of the stink in congress and might possible improve their approval ratings. Temporary that is until they came back.

Honestly though I have never seen such a bunch of crybabies in my life. They piss and moan every time Obama proposes something even if it's something they want. Only in this congress has ever a man filibustered his own bill. Really a disgrace of the position.

They are going to walk out? You'd think Sean Penn was nominated. Hagel's a Republican (or was). They don't even bother to offer an explanantion any more...probably because they can't think of a good one. Only that he's Obama's pick and he once complained about the power of the Isreali lobby in Washington.

The evil behind the Tea Party (Kochs, Norquist, Ralph Reed, etc.) is still active obviously...

The EPA is here to protect us from your Georgia Pacific environmental destruction Kochs.

The rich that support your tax pledge should pay more than they are paying Norquist. Even the Capital Gains hike to 20% still isn't as much as the poor working suckers are paying on earned income.

And if there is a hell Reed, you will almost certainly be visiting there some day, for hiding behind the Christian faith as you do underhand deals for votes (Abramoff, Norquist, etc.)

Want to see who is Not My Hero, check out the NY Times article on Democratic Senator from New Jersey Bob Menedez.

LOL Really...

A good while back I remember reading an article on how Dick Cheney managed 5 draft deferrals, never served one day in the Military, and has nothing but an incestuous love of war and sending American boys and girls to war.

In November 1962, at the age of 21, Cheney was convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI). He was arrested for DWI again the following year.

When Cheney became eligible for the draft, during the Vietnam War, he applied for and received five draft deferments. In 1989, The Washington Post writer George C. Wilson interviewed Cheney as the next Secretary of Defense; when asked about his deferments, Cheney reportedly said, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service"

When he became eligible for the draft, he applied for four deferments in sequence. He applied for his fifth exemption on January 19, 1966, when his wife was about 10 weeks pregnant. He was granted 3-A status, the "hardship" exemption, which excluded men with children or dependent parents.

At 20 I was married with a daughter, and was drafted.

Isn't that something, and I'd bet Cheney is one of your hero's, are you a veteran?

Hagel should not be the guy who sweeps the Secretary of Defense's office bathroom, but to walkout is counter-productive. Stand in their and say why Hagel is such an inept clown and then vote him down. Then filibuster till the cows come home. But don't walk out. Make the case.

If the Democrats push to have the vote before the committee received all the information it asked for, then Republicans have no choice but to filibuster!

If the Democrats are willing to turn this process into a sham, then Republicans have to fight to defend the constitution and the right of the American people to have elected officials who are still held to account! So filibuster becomes the only real option here.

Those are your options senators: Filibuster or dereliction of duty!

Hagel omitted two speeches on the Senate disclosure form. You can be sure the transcripts of those two speeches will be made public, and what they contain could prove to be trouble for Hagel. If nothing else, the omissions demonstrate a lack of honesty by Hagel, but when has that ever proven to be detrimental to a politician. Obama heads one of the least transparent administrations of all time, why should his choice for Secretary of Defense be any different?

my thoughts on a walk out would be this..these are elected people that are suppose to serve this nation as a whole....showing the disreguard they all have , republicans , for the office of president is something I can not understand if they are concerned at all with the abilities of this nation and its moving forward as the best in the world in every respect. So far the republicans have been against everything Obama has tried to put forth , even when it was a republicans idea. All politicans are elected to do a job..if none are capable then they need to get out of the way and allow those who actually care about this country instead of the wealthy few who hand all politicans tons of money to get what they want ...with the cost passed to the middle class. IF any think this is false then you need to check out just how much money comes from special interest groups that are founded by the wealthy....and lets not forget that all politicans are among the wealthy and are surely looking out for their own.

McCain had too much faith in his staff, who basically made the Palin pick for him. His error was trusting them.

Had he been left to his own devices, here on Newsvine we'd be discussing President McCain and wondering if VP Colin Powell will be running in 2016.

The staff out of the public eye can make or break a candidate. Consider how strong Palin's staff turned out to be: not only did they get her name on the ticket, but they turned their laughable loser of a candidate into a money machine for awhile.

why is the left so intolerant of opposing views? mccain challenged hagel to answer questions which hagel refused to do. mccain will now respect the history of the senate's advise and consent (something the democrats refused to do for eisenhower and bush senior) and simply vote against hagel's nomination.

yet he is again ravaged by the liv here -- so when he says he will not support a filibuster the angry red keeps going at him.

All either wanted was to try to score political points. I don't remember either asking really pertinent questions about any of todays problems that would face a SoD. Especially McCain. Hope they do walk out. That will show not only the US but the entire world just how immature and irrelevant the GOP is getting. The right is always accusing the left of "whinning", but who is doing it now? The GOP are the cry babies. Thier actions speak for themselves.

Because Republicans' "opposing views" led us into the 2nd Great Depression, us getting hit by terrorists on 9/11, being lied into war, and now to the GOP stalling our economic recovery.

The GOP causing all that trouble and never seeming to have learned anything from their failures and instead shouting from their Republican rooftops to continue to do the same things all over again that failed so miserably the first time tends to make people tired and piss people off.

The left is not intolerant of opposing views, it actually contains opposing views within it's own side. What it should not tolerate are views that are not rational and based on lies or knowing misrepresentation of the facts. In other words, the dominant right wing views these days. When the right gets back to fact based argument their views will get a proper hearing.

Did you seriously post "why is the left so intolerant of opposing views?"?

Let me paraphrase a few former Republican posts on NewsVine.

      "All Libtards are scum".

"If we got rid of all the liberals we'd be better off".

"All Liberals do is sit around waiting for their government check to come"

And on and on and on.

On top of that they went along with "Slick" Willie and his money machine, in letting banks and investors sell and trade toxic mortgages that they were encouraged to do by the Democrips. We had a thriving economy under Democrat President Bill Clinton.

The 2nd Great Depression happened under the Republican Bush Administration, and there's not a "man" nor a "Leader" among them that will stand up and take responsibility for 8 years worth of bad decisions. Bush crashed the entire United States Economy just as he was walking out the door of the White House.

Things started going "south" when Bush let his oil buddies bankrupt the American People through high gas prices at a time when Bush was pumping millions of gallons of Iraqi oil everyday. As much as that war cost the American People we should have been getting our gas for free.

So they killed Kennedy and made a deal with LBJ to do some sweeping under the rug and escalate Nam. Eisenhower said it first "beware the military-industrial complex". Money talks, politicians walk.

The first Americans sent to Vietnam (then known as French Indo China) were sent by republican Dwight Eisenhower. That is how it began.

As for escalation, there's plenty of blame to go around to each of the four president's that followed, Johnson certainly getting his share.

To selectively pick Johnson out of the list is similar to blaming 911 on one of the hijackers on one of the planes.

Dear Lindsey is acting like the conservative fool due to the fact that he must appease the conservative and evangelical nuts in South Carolina in the hopes of preserving his seat in the Senate. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire is in the same boat.

        Consider the Obama-related coincidences:

Obama just happened to know 60s far-left radical
revolutionary William Ayers, whose father just happened to be Thomas
        Ayers
, who just happened to be a close friend of Obama’s communist
mentor Frank Marshall Davis, who just happened to work at the
communist-sympathizing Chicago Defender with Vernon Jarrett, who just
happened to later become the father-in-law of Iranian-born leftist Valerie
Jarrett, who Obama just happened to choose as his closest White House advisor,
and who just happened to have been CEO of Habitat Company, which just happened
to manage public housing in Chicago, which just happened to get millions of
dollars from the Illinois state legislature, and which just happened not to
properly maintain the housing—which eventually just happened to require
        demolition.

Valerie Jarrett also just happened to work for the city of
Chicago, and just happened to hire Michelle LaVaughan Robinson (later Obama),
who just happened to have worked at the Sidley Austin law firm, where former
fugitive from the FBI Bernardine Dohrn also just happened to work, and where
Barack Obama just happened to get a summer job.

Lindsey Graham is busy serving Israel, which is obvious from his questions, which either focus on Israel or Iran. His Israel/AIPAC constituents want a war with Iran and don't believe Hagel gives them their best chance.

McCain, also an Israeli shill, must have somehow come to his senses or else has an ulterior motive.

                No more wars for Israel.

                Talk to the hand!

You should NEVER run for congress if you believe that Graham is playing the hard ass because it's what he truly believes! You would never get elected. He's playing to the far right of his party because he's scared of being placed against some extreme right tea bagger in the primary! For him it's survival.

Kind of gives you a picture of the hard times the Republican party is having due to their extreme party platform. They brought this on themselves! It's so funny that with the trouncing they got in the last election that they still have some party nuts that are still playing the "stupid" game!

Only one came close and republicans joined democrats in the circus. That was when the little bush nominated that legal aid level familiy friend woman to the SCOTUS. Both sides of the aisle got a laugh out of that one.

At least McCain and Hagel are both war heroes from the same war. The rest of these boys just talk tough. Of course they are talking tough with someone else's life. It doesn't make Hagel competent to be Secretary of Defense but it does entitle him to some respect and courtesy from the boys that avoided it. I don't care if they walk out. I think we would better off if everyone on both sides of the isle walked out and didn't come back. At least we would save some money until we got some new ones.

What makes Hagel a hero. He got 2 purple hearts because he didn't keep his ass down. Almost everyone got an ARCOM for service in Viet-Nam and the Viet-Namese Cross of Gallantry was awarded to everyone. If he was such a hero where is his Medal of Honor, Silver Star or at least a Bronze Starw/V.

                    #11.1 - Mon Feb 11, 2013 4:32 PM EST

wyominggrandfather - since the Medal of Honor is rarely give out - you can count the number of recipients since the Civil War - 3476 so receiving one is very rare. McCain doesn't have one. Purple hearts are a sign someone has been wounded and those who served with Hagel have stated he was a hero. McCain received the Navy Commendation Medal and the Broze Star - strictly for the mission he flew in VietNam - not for any other reason.

Get a life - your post is idiotic and reeks of jealousy!

McCain got shot down because be disobeyed an order to abort attack. Always a wanna hero looking for press clippings. Hell he crashed 3 planes before he got his self shot down. I guess Admirals sons didn't grounded like normal pilots after a crash. Three planes destroyed was more than enough to get your wings clipped, not John, daddy came to the rescue.

They spout the Bible and the Constitution to suit their own means, but if they THOUGHT about it - they would be denying Jesus a mean and a place to lay his head - calling him a welfare bum!
