Bachmann campaign's use of contact list comes under more fire

Charlie Neibergall / AP file

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., speaks at a rally by home-school advocates in March 2011 at the Statehouse in Des Moines, Iowa.

Eight months after Michele Bachmann's 2012 presidential bid ground to a halt in Iowa, her campaign manager there signed a sworn affidavit, pointing his finger at another top staffer in a still-simmering dispute over the misuse of a contact list of home-school family names.

The Sept. 4 affidavit – first reported by the Iowa Republican and obtained Friday by NBC News – was written by Bachmann's Iowa adviser Eric Woolson, and accuses former State Sen. Kent Sorenson of stealing the list from another Bachmann staffer.  Sorenson was the campaign’s state chairman at the time.

"We took it," Woolson says Sorenson told him.

The list was the at the center of a flap late in Bachmann's presidential run, when a powerful Iowa home-school network called “NICHE” complained that its collection of contacts for thousands of home-school families had been mined by the campaign and used to expand its fundraising.

At the time, the campaign called the emails a "mistake."  The campaign agreed to pay NICHE, a 501c3 nonprofit, several thousand dollars in order to keep the group compliant with federal elections law.

But in his affidavit, Woolson says he approached Sorenson on the same day the fundraising emails were sent, and was told the list had been stolen.

"Kent smiled at me and said, 'Do you want to know how it happened?'" Woolson writes, adding:

I said, "No," and tried to back out of his office.

Kent said, "We took it."  Kent said they weren't getting anything from Barb (Heki), so when she stepped out of the office they took it.

Kent said, "We stood watch."

Woolson appears to corroborate the account of the alleged victim, Barb Heki, who last summer filed a lawsuit against Bachmann and other high-ranking staff, including Sorenson and Woolson.

Heki, who was the campaign's Homeschool Coalitions Director and a NICHE member, says she was unjustly blamed for leaking the list and that she and her husband later lost their seats on the group's board.  Heki alleged senior staff was aware of what Sorenson had done but allowed her reputation to suffer.

Sorenson has long denied taking the list, saying he helped negotiate the solution with NICHE.

"Nothing new here," he said over text message Friday.  "Same story being recycled."

Sorenson later bolted Bachmann's campaign for the Ron Paul team – a high-profile defection that helped cripple her campaign days before the caucuses.

Lawyers for the Bachmann campaign have also disputed Heki's claims.

A court filing this summer called the case a “broad brush, shotgun approach” that “fails to inform Michele Bachmann… and the other named defendants (other than perhaps Kent Sorenson) what they did wrong.”

A Polk County Judge on Jan. 30 denied the defendants' motion to dismiss the suit.

In his affidavit, Woolson says Heki ultimately learned details of the alleged theft from Bachmann herself, during a staff party the day after Bachmann quit the presidential race.

"Barb approached me and said Michele Bachmann told her Kent Sorenson had taken the NICHE list and asked me if it was true," Woolson says.  "I nodded yes."

Bachmann's campaign lawyer and congressional office did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Woolson's name was dropped from Heki's lawsuit sometime after he signed the affidavit.   He declined to comment for this story.

Bachmann dropped out of the presidential race one day after finishing last among the candidates competing in the Jan. 3, 2012, caucuses.

In a civilized society, Michelle Bachmann would be in treatment for psychosis and delusional thinking.

And this is news now from a failed campaign? I would think that MSNBC would want to cover the debt, unemployment, Obama's complete failure to lead in the face of the Benghazi attack and any of the thousands of other more critical issues facing this country.

Oh wait, all of that would make their God - the Big 0 look bad - never mind, go back to non-starters.

Hey REB, Bachmann is a standing US Representative in the House, and allegedly she was informed by her staffers that they illegally obtained private information and she still used it. You don't think government corruption is a real story? Or just that *Republican* government corruption isn't a real story...

The first is that she is on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, giving her a new role as overseer of the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and the rest of the U.S. intelligence community. The second is that it contains the word intelligence, which by definition is the opposite of how the religious right thinks.

LOL.... "isn't the Big O's dereliction of duty a tad more important".

The DOW hits a record January, aside from doubling from where it was when "The Big O" took office.

Unemployment continues dropping.

Domestic oil production over the past 3 years is the highest its been in 20 years.

Benghazi is a non story. Always has been. Continuing to harp on it isn't gonna change it. @!$%# like that happens all the time, sadly. The difference here was it was something shortly before the presidential election that Romney strategists, Rove chiefly, knew could be used as a wedge issue for the numb of mind. The fact that it keeps echoing from places like Fox has done little to change that fact that it has gotten 0 traction outside of that small alternative reality experiencing portion of the populace who still think Romney won the popular election, was anything other than a corporate raider and thief... You already know all the rest I have to say. Fill in the blanks there. You don't agree with it and I don't care.

The sum of it all is, what you believe isn't what is happening. Continuing to post like little bitches all over the internet as though you've somehow been robbed and are being hurt , that that country is near collapse, that the economy is still in the @!$%#ter despite being on par/higher than it was during Reagan years hasn't changed reality. So, continue to post your silliness. The majority of America will continue to either scratch their head in confusion as to how you've reached your conclusions, OR, just continue to laugh out you outright.

chipsalom

I won't argue much of what you state but i do have a couple issues.

1 I voted for the Pres in 2008 but cannot get past his signing NDAA, the Patriot Act and HR 347. I think it violated his oath of office. And to be fair, the Congress never had the right to give away ours in the first place. He should have refused to sign them.

2 While our economy has improved, there is a cliff ahead of us. We have over 140 trillion in obligations outstanding coming due in the near future. That much money does not exist. Since much of our debt is being sold to foreigners who are now refusing to finance our overspending any longer, something must be done and the liberals think we can just keep spending. What many fail to understand is that ALL social programs will be gone if nobody is willing to finance it.

Was impeached by the House of Representatives on two charges, one of perjury and one of obstruction of justice, on December 19, 1998. He was acquitted by the Senate on February 12, 1999.

So much for that, President Clinton REMAINED President!!

Ever since Nixon was impeached for being a crook, Republicans have been better at not getting caught, never changing their ways. Like their new "reboot 4.0", they have every intention of changing their crazy rhetoric, but never the outdated policies. Anyone who votes Republican is either insane, ignorant, or a Tea Bagger.

Mark 865096.... Nixon resigned before congress could impeach him... I remember it well. He even admitted in an interview with David Frost that he was responsible for what his people did... "But...when a president does it...it is not breaking the law".... He never admitted to wrongdoing because, as far as his little paranoid mind was concerned, being president gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to do...

After he resigned office, there were many people calling for him to be charged with conspiracy... but Gerald Ford issued a presidential pardon... You don't pardon someone if you are sure he is innocent...

I've seen plenty of accusations from right-wing media sources. Interestingly enough, of the 15 (not 800, or even 300) bills I found that passed the house but were stalled in the senate, all of them had either pork or some grievous environmental deregulation attached to them. the bills are great, if you think it's worth it to create 10 or 15 jobs by destroying a region's air and water

No discussion of cockblocking is complete, however, without Mitch McConnell's "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." Not jobs, not the economy, not education, not the citizens of America. Just naked partisan self-interest...oh, and the record-setting number of filibusters as a result

The thing is, is that I don't like any of them. My problem is that they are not doing their jobs. ANY of them.

How many times has the President vetoed a bill? ........0. Why? Because no bills are brought before him other than the ones that are allowed by the cronies. That is not checks and balances. The administration can't look bad vetoing bills if they never see his desk. That is not how our system is supposed to work.

While there are many issues I have with Boehner, at least he finally let the house decide for themselves on the tax debate. That is what the senates mandate is. Not for Harry Reid to decide for all of them.

The problem is that they are all cockblocking and it does no good when we allow it as a society. And it does more harm when some of us justify one behavior because it suits our interest while condemning another that is doing the same thing. It is sad to say, but they are a reflection of the society that their divisiveness has created.

Look at what you did. You sidestepped any responsibility that Harry Reid has in his post. It IS his job to bring bills to the floor and let "them" either accept, modify or kill them based on 100 votes, not just his.

Oh? you mean like they did to Gov. Mark Sanforth? and Sen John Ensign? How about Newt? Oh, but wait! I saved a few juicier ones for last:

Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), a six-term congressman, and co-chair of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, who had sent sexually explicit e-mails and text messages to a 16 year-old male Congressional page. Foley resigned in September 2006, two months before the general election, long after the Republican leadership had failed to discipline him, and only after a blog (stopsexpredators.blogspot.com) and ABC-TV news exposed his hoped-for affairs may have included other staff dating back at least a decade.

            and then there's:

Rep. Donald Lukens (R-Ohio), who was convicted in 1989 of a misdemeanor for having sex with a 16-year-old girl. He didn't resign until 1990

and let's not forget Sen Larry Craig and his "wide stance"

            ......shall I go one?

Hillary Clinton was the worst and most incompetent Secretary of State in modern American history.

So you don't think that political parties stand for something and republicans didn't vote lock step in both the house, its ok to vote for the person, but when they reach Washington they are either republican or democrat. Not very many vote independent of party. So issues, become the parties. In my opinion democrats believe in fair, and republicans believe in exclusion from fair. Democrats believe in strong social safety nets and republicans want to roll the clock back to before Franklin Roosevelt.

Who and how are these homeschoolers regulated? Teachers have to be certified they have to have college degrees that are not only pertinent to what they teach but in the art of teaching itself. The states regulate the curriculum so that their is a balanced course of study for a well rounded education. I am sure a very small percentage of these homeschoolers are qualified to teach in a certain subject area, but that virtually none are qualified to provide the range of learning the states expect of public and private schools, not to mention the social interaction these kids are deprived of. Are these people regulated in any way? Personally I think home schooling probably borders on child abuse in most instances.

Kent said, "We took it." Kent said they weren't getting anything from Barb (Heki), so when she stepped out of the office they took it.

                  Kent said, "We stood watch."

Now, how about one example where Obama staffers stole a list of contacts? Hmmm, just one?

I guess you are right! That does explain the difference between Republicans and Democrats!

In the south they would say "Bless her heart".

In the south this is a nice way of saying "dumber than a box of rocks".

                      She epitomizes the tea party.

It's not how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose. If you can't win....cheat.

If the majority of the population doesn't agree with you, find a way to restrict their vote.

If you want to press your social agenda, say it's GODS will.

Bachmann is more of a has been than Palin. She almost lost in the last election. She's accomplished nothing as a Representative. Her claim to fame this secession was introducing a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act (for the 37th time) and she didn't get even one co-sponsor. I'll give her 1 more term at most. Sometimes even the stupidest voters see the light.

The dishonesty of the religious right never ceases to amaze. As usual, those pushing an agenda of alleged morality the hardest are usually those with the least moral convictions themselves, just as those screaming "freedom and liberty" tend to be liberty's biggest threat. Bachmann is a prime example of both.

Exactly. They should have taken a cue from Obama's campaign and gotten "permission" to use peoples contact information for things they had no clue it would be used for.

If she gets accused of wrong doing, it most certainly must be a plot hatched up by the also evil "lamestream media" Ten to one this story never sees light on FOX.

Umm, "useyourmind"... the robber barons were the equivalent of our modern day corporate CEOs... not politicians. They still exist today. The point of calling them barons contradicts anything in public office. What i mean is, your government is determined by YOU, or better said, WE the people. If you have a problem with it, you are partly to blame, because you have a voice in its makeup.

That is the polar opposite of corporate CEOs. You don't get a voice.. unless ofc you have a board seat and own a @!$%# ton of stock in the company. In which case you are one of them.

I think you need to go back to junior high to restudy US history.

Really?? What brand of compter are you using and exactly who forced you to buy that brand???

We have far more control over CEO's than we do politicians. Politicians have the ability to force things upon us, no corporate CEO will ever be able to do that. If we don't like what a CEO does with his company we can simply choose to not do business with that company. Remember when BoA tried to charge people a $5 ATM fee?? How'd that work out? You really don't the the people had a voice there?? When a politician does something we don't like we don't have the ability to say "screw you".

And btw- "the robber barons were the equivalent of our modern day corporate CEOs" ...I think he understands that. The coprporate CEO's have gained the reigns of this country is the point he was trying to make.

And yet, Republicans have abandoned jobs bills that THEY CO-SPONSORED just to make sure the unemployment rate stayed high before the election (that one for veterans was practically co-written by McCain, and he bailed out on it too). Note that most Republicans bailed on a bill to support the UN to help the disabled even with BOB DOLE, that noted leftist radical, coming in to speak for it.

Both sides use names on bills to imply some noble intent even though the name has little to do with the actual contents of the bill. Like Ryan continuously referring to a republican bill as bipartisan because 1 democrat out of 200+ in the house supported it. How many Americans actually read any bill? They're politicians.

State run media? Bet you got that at the faux wing of the republican party propaganda station.

I never met so many republicans that fear the truth and runs towards and grasp at any dubious conspiracy theory.

Women vote for a republican and become a second class citizen with the state making your medical decisions. That is not freedom to me.

To a republican it is quite okay to take your assault weapon and gun down 20 children after they are born in the name of gun freedom they want to protect.

Yet at the same time the republicans want to force a rape victim to carry the child as every life is precious, that is until it is born.

Funny the republicans believe in right to life except for the living.

The allegations against the US Senator havent been proven! Besides, that's nowhere NEAR as improtant than the deliberate attempt to destabilize US solvency! The latter is TREASON!

Let's see, where oh where did Michelle matriculate?

Oral Roberts University. A national joke.

Please, DO run for the Senate seat against Al Franken.

Al Franken is the liberal version of Michelle Bachmann. Bragging about choosing one crazy @!$%#er over another doesn't exactly make you or your state seem all that intelligent. I mean really, are these two the best you guys can come up with??

And what did Michelle Bachman major in while attending Oral Roberts "university"? Oh thats right, "Biblical law"!!! ROTFLMFAO!!!

If I remember right from reading the bible, "biblical law" requires that you stone your daughter to death in the town square when she gets raped by someone she is not married to.

You know I am beginning to see the NRA's point about owning Assault Rifles to protect myself from an out of control federal government. But unlike the NRA, I would use it to protect myself from the likes of Michelle Bachman and her religious fanatic followers who want to force their twisted belief system down my throat, not from the "liberals" who want to give me cleaner air and water, free education, universal health care and a social safety net for when times get tough.

Apparently, Backcountry has chickened out, not surprisingly, so for the anyone else who likes to believe this stuff, here is what Franken was talking about. From The Joke Stops Here, Paul Duchene, The Oregonian:

Here is what Franken actually said in an interview about his book Why Not Me:

There are two ways to market. One is to do the Pat Paulson thing and announce you are running .... I take campaigns seriously, and I wouldn't want to inject myself into something that I think is sacred. If I put myself on the ballot and even 50 people voted for me, it'd be a travesty, so I wrote a book about it instead."

Yep. Sounds totally different when you have the whole quote, right Backcountry? But you wouldn't know that would you? You prefer to believe the Limbaugh's of the world.

This web site published stories on that issue on Feb 2, 4, and 5, as a simple search would reveal. Your remarks about state run media are nonsense.

Yet what about on the 3rd? If that's not a liberal cover up I don't know what is.

P.S. This country doesn't have a state run media. They're referred to as mainstream media.

That would be Obama and Rev. Wright correct? That would be Obama and Ayers correct? While I'm not a fan of Bachman, she has used her life to raise foster children,so casting stones at someone who has made a difference is rather childlike.

broker1.. She gets ample government financial assistance for foster children. If they were adopted she would only get a tax exemption which is minimal for her income bracket.

So, if she were so concerned about these children, why doesn't she adopt them.

If there is so much money in raising foster children, how come there are so many not being placed in homes.Jesus Christ, you don't have to look far to see our failing education system at work.

There is a difference between raising children, and giving them lodging for a night or two. She did nothing more than run a hostel, , get paid by the government, then claim she 'raised' all those 37 kids. What a crock. Given that wormans loose sense of morals, she should never have been allowed anywhere near any kid.

RedDevPS.......great call on Michelle's foster children! Imagine all those nice young girls being brainwashed by the bat brained foster mama! Also, an interesting fact, ALL OF THEM WERE GIRLS! Could it have some significance that Marcus was in the house as well? Why not any BOYS??

Luckily, Michelle has been quite quiet since her trumping at the polls in November! Maybe she has gotten the message that her idiotic messages have finally caught up with her. I am in her district and an Independent, have never voted for her and really hope she runs again Franken, then the smart people of MInnesota will finally dump her for good.

Any politician is likely corrupt of whatever party. Even those that don't directly steal or cheat sell their support for campaign money. When Sheldon spent 100 million on Romneys campaign Romney pledged if elected to create a one year tax holiday allowing Americans with foreign earnings to repatriate that money tax free. Allowing Sheldon to repatriate his 8 billion or so tax free would have saved him one billion in one year. Think that's a coincidence?

If you start back with Reagan and build up significant steam when you get to Bush you'll find its really easy to get to 16 trillion in a little over 30 years.

At Obama's pace it would take only 11 years, So what is your point?

The point is Bush started with a 5.7 trillion deficit and ended at 12.1 with a final deficit of 1.2 trillion. The 2009 budget was passed under Bush in October 2008 before Obama was even elected. Didn't know that did you? You probably didn't know the economy the last six months of 2008 during the great meltdown lost 11 trillion in net worth and 500 billion less tax revenue per year. As stated by the CBO who ever was elected in 2008 would have deficits over 1 trillion a year just paying the same bills Bush paid with no new spending. Luckily according to polls before the election the majority of Americans at around 80% including the majority of republicans blame Bush for our deficit and debt and not Obama. 80% of republicans are intelligent enough to do simple math. Sorry that you apparently fall in the 20% that can't.

Something funny in the water? Toxic waste dump? What is going on in Michele's district?

It is a weird district, JimS....takes in some wealthy 'burbs, but also a swath of a more rural "guns and God" area that I generally read about because of some racist activity or out of control party.

The folks I know in that district claim they don't vote for Michelle, but clearly SOMEONE is. She had to work against her last opponent, and can do so largely because of out of state contribution from the evangelicals who think she is the second coming. Without that money? I wonder how she would do?

Of course, if a president lied his way into a war, you could say he added the cost of that war to the national debt.

No one I know has said that. They're saying he's spending that amount paying bills Bush created. Bush's last budget for 2009 passed in October 2008 had a 1.2 trillion deficit. Why was it ok for Bush to spend 1.2 trillion a year more than we took in but not Obama? Obama hasn't created a single new permanent program that adds to the deficit he's simply paying the same bills Bush did but with 500 billion a year less tax revenue because of Bush's great meltdown. For someone who doesn't use capitalization or punctuation you're not one to accuse others of being morons.

All Hispanics back to Mexico, Blacks to the cotton fields, Seniors to concentration camps (so you don't have to pay Social Security or Medicare), and while your at it repeal all womens rights. That is the single digit IQed Tea Party.

Hmmm... the neo-nuts defending Bachmann the Hypnotized should have this idiot of a woman as their Senator-For-Life!

How this insane woman of the "Stupid Party" became a member of the US Intelligence Committee is still one of life's mysteries-- that defies all known logic.
