Obama steels House Dems for sequester fight ahead

PUBLISHED 2:29 p.m. ET -- President Barack Obama told his House Democratic colleagues that he would continue to challenge Republicans on how to best replace the impending sweeping spending cuts known as the "sequester."

Speaking at the House Democratic Issues Conference in Leesburg, Va., Obama said he wants to create an alternative to the sequester that includes some entitlement reforms but also more revenue through ending loopholes and deductions for the wealthiest earners, a point of disagreement with GOP lawmakers.

“I am prepared, eager and anxious to do a big deal, a big package that ends this governance by crisis,” he told the crowd.

Obama decried Republicans, who, he said, recognize “that the sequester is a bad idea, but what they've suggested is that the only way to replace it now is for us to cut Social Security, cut Medicare and not close a single loophole, not raise any additional revenue from the wealthiest Americans or corporations who have a lot of lawyers and accounts.”

While the president seemed to lament the lack of communication between himself and House Republicans, neither side has indicated that they negotiating in public or private. Earlier Thursday, White House press secretary Jay Carney lambasted House Speaker John Boehner’s reported offer, which includes cuts to Medicare premiums and federal pension programs, as “terrible.”

At the issues conference, Obama said he was steeling himself for another philosophical fight over cuts with the Republicans.

“I have to tell you, if that's an argument that they want to have before the court of public opinion, that is an argument I'm more than willing to engage in,” he said to applause.

But disagreements might not just be limited to the Republican side, the president added, saying he’s prepared to clash with fellow Democrats on key issues like immigration and gun safety.

“There will be times where you guys are mad at me, and I'll occasionally read about it,” he said.

Despite any such intra-party bickering, the president said he still believed Democrats would be in a good position in 2014 to retake the House of Representatives.

“As a by-product of doing that good work and keeping that focus, I would expect that Nancy Pelosi's going to be speaker again pretty soon,” the President concluded his remarks with, as the crowd erupted in cheers for their leader.

It is easy for the millionaires, and people worth hundreds of thousands to say just be patient everything will be alright in ten years! And that might be alright, except for the fact, that this was a man made great recession, brought about by corruption, Greed and outright thievery! That resulted in millions of hard working people losing everything they worked hard for all their lives! Then required to pay what little they had left to bail the economy out, while the ones who caused the mess sits on the bailout money and gets richer and richer! It is time to pay the piper and the piper is the middle class who lost everything! I didn't hear anyone saying it was not right when the rip off party was going on, Now they want to be so correct with how their money is handled!

I don't care what theyn do, but why cuts in medicare? People pay into this for 40 or 50 years and die about 10 or 15 years later, how can it be in that bad of shape? Increase the tax rate for that or do away with the earnings limit, but one thing is for sure, you can't depend on Wall St or 401ks to be your primary retirement safety net.

Shelia - Medicare was not fully funded since it became law. People have never paid in enough to support the program. It is now estimated to have an unfunded liability of over $60 trillion. There is no way to get that amount of money from anyone. Medicare must and will be restructured. The sooner that is done, the less painful it will be.

A single man or woman who turned 65 in 2010 and earned the 2011 average U.S. wage of $43,500 will pay $58,000 in Medicare taxes and $294,000 in Social Security taxes, making for a total of $352,000, according to a 2011 report by the Urban Institute.

But the average Social Security and Medicare benefits that single man will recieve will come to about $432,000. And the single woman will get benefits worth about $475,000 out of the system.

This isn't a new development either. The same Urban Institute report shows that the average wage-earning man who turned 65 in 1980 would pay about $104,000 into the two entitlement programs, but get benefits worth $265,000. A single woman in 1980 would pay in the same amount and get benefits worth $330,000. Single earner couples fare even better. In 1980, they'd pay in the same $104,000— and get an average of $512,000 in benefits. Today that single earner couple would pay $352,000 into the system and get $798,000 out.

No problem, just put it on the card. We are the world currency, tomorrow just call up ben bernanke and write a check of 17 trillion to the chinese . Is that not doable?

We should always look to the History of a "leaders" comments and actions in assessing his real intent, motive, and competence as a leader. Obama, for instance, has proven to be an unworthy and incompetent "leader" in all aspects and areas of governance, has LIED repeatedly, and deceived even his most faithful far left liberal jock supporters (and sniffers) thru a relatively SHORT political History pock marked with "flip-flops" and blatant mistruths. So, in light of that, shouldn't the first consclusion on ANY THING HE UTTERS be "If his lips are moving he is phucking lying"??? Uh Huh, Yeah, OK, Rat' on , Sheeeeittttt. He is about to get his Community Organizing Thieving HANDS into ALL of our pockets. RESIST THAT republicans...Stand your ground against this destructive narcissist.

The liberals on this board are so frigging STUPID that they just can't comprehend the fact that "closing loopholes" and TAXING THE RICH- their favorite little rallying cry..won't even put a DENT in our deficit spending, much less the $16,500,000,000,000 deficit....

I'm convinced, beyond a doubt, that there's not a libtard on this Vine that's capable of understanding what SIXTEEN TRILLION dollars is...not to mention, spending another TRILLION dollars a year more than we take in...

Do any of you idiots run your household budget like this?

Or do you run up your credit cards expecting the "rich guy" down the street to pay your effing bills?

WHERE ARE THE SPENDING CUTS, BARRY?

You liberals think fiscal responsibility is "OBSTRUCTIONISM"?

Just wait.... you'll see REAL "obstructionism" if your azzholes in the Senate don't come to their senses.

You seem to forget that Mr. Obama won by 3% of the vote...which means that there's plenty of us voters out there, that are still determined to fight to save our Republic.

Not to mention Obama is still breaking the LAW by refusing to turn in a budget by January 31.

His upcoming State of the Union will be nothing but another partisan election-time parade.

Guess I'll find some re-runs of the Twilight Zone to watch...'cause that's where the Democrats live.

I think the real fear that the Feds have is that after the Sequester comes and thousands of Federal employees are furloughed one day every two weeks no one will be able to see any impact on the rest of us. The Dems are doing a good job blaming all the fiscal problems on the Republicans but it will be interesting to see how they pin the ultimate collapse of the American economy on those who tried (but failed) to curb spending and printing money.

I cannot believe more than half this country believes the
lies our government is spewing. For the past five years all we have been told
is how Bushes tax cut caused this recession, let us discuses what we know, Bush
took office in 2001 with a deficit of $5.95 trillion and a government surplus
in the billions. I am not a CPA so I have to ask how can you have a surplus and
debt at the same time, is this the new math we are teaching or what? The Bush administration
also inherited a new salary increase, the presidents salary went from one
hundred thousand a year to four hundred thousand with the one hundred and fifty
thousand expense account staying the same, there are about five hundred and
thirty five people employed in the house, congress, and senate all making one
hundred and fifty thousand to just over two hundred thousand plus expense accounts.
Clinton passed the pay hike before leaving office the first time a president had
done this since 1969. Anyone else notices the taxes on the rich start at four
hundred thousand exempting government salaries from the tax increase, Fifty
thousand for expenses are tax exempt all together, and the other hundred
thousand is taxed differently than income remember Obama signed off on this
right after saying I have no problem paying my share in taxes. Sorry I get off
track some times, 2001 we have 911 estimated cost one trillion dollars, it is
hard to say if this is true because the amount was add to the cost of the war
three trillion in total up to 2011, remember we were supposed to be out of the
war by 2011. According to the treasury department the deficit stayed the same
until 2003 does this mean Bush used the surplus for 911 costs and the start of
the wars. 2003 Bushes tax laws, 2005 Katrina hits, estimated cost one hundred
and twenty five billion, interesting when you consider storm sandy is estimated
worse than Katrina and Obama only asked for sixty billion in aid, according to treasury
reports from 2003-2006 the deficit increased to nine trillion meaning Bush add
three trillion to the deficit, the cost of 911 and the wars. 2006 democrats
take full control; the housing market starts to slide the deficit jumps to over
ten trillion, 2007 massive foreclosures because home owners cannot pay their balloon
payments, the deficit jumps to over eleven trillion. 2008 election year, banks cannot
sale off their bad loans, stock holders dump stocks, millions of people are laid
off and fifty present of our companies are gone, the deficit jumps to over
twelve trillion, in eight years Bush add six trillion to the deficit about the
same amount Clinton gave him when he took office, and he did it with lower
taxes, a war, recession and two major disasters, and salary hikes. When broken
down Republicans add three trillion, democratic control in two years add another
three trillion to the deficit, I cannot find any ware Bush used executive
orders to raise the debt ceiling this means congress and the senate wrote up
the bill passed it and Bush signed it, just as he and Obama signed the bill to
bail out the banks. This is where it gets interesting 2009-2010 the debt did
not change, half the country is unemployed and we lost half our companies and
the income tax revenue dropped to 2.1 trillion from 2.5 trillion from 2008, the
government was funding all kinds of bail outs, you remember them cash for Junkers,
eight thousand for first time home buyers, they extended unemployment, kept the
                            government running, added military to
the war, not once did they ask for more money or raise the debt while democrats
were in control. I guess Bushes three trillion and the 4.2 trillion in two
years of income tax revenue under his tax laws was enough to keep this country
from going into a full blown depression, it is a shame the money was not used
more wisely so it would have lasted longer. the $750 billion bank bail outs,
the 80 billion GM bail out, the three thousand per Junker car and the eight
thousand first time buyer deal and the half million to the bankrupt solar
company all could have gone to Obama job bills he could have passed in 2009 and
2010, that money could have kept the government running for another year if
they watch their spending. Sorry democrats the lies and blame dose not add up I
suggest you try educating your self’s before you start preaching what you do
not know, please be quick about it before we all end up sharing poverty.

Based on the news reports sequestration was Obama's idea.

Now Obama is looking to blame Congress. Obama and Congress should have taken the advice of the Deficit Commission (Simpson-Bowles).

Let the finger pointing begin. But the politicans should be looking in the mirror.

This president has said over and over how willing he is to listen to other ideas, well prove it and start taking some other ideas in. At least to me it appears this president wants to hear other ideas but only if they are the same ideas he has.

Here is an idea: Pass A bill to fund a plan with say fifty billion dollars to start the club If these 11 million people could form a mortgage free club, and each put a hundred dollars each month into it, they could raise over a billion dollars each month. With this money, they could have a drawing, and pay off so many mortgages. Say the first month they paid off 150,000 homes, these150,000 could continue to pay a hundred dollars plus, say twenty percent, or say fifty percent of what they were paying on their mortgage before to help others keeping; a close record of all money transactions. this figure would grow each month, and become more effective. as people would have more income to use in their own lives's. They could work out a plan that would be more effective, also. for the ones who won the first months draw, 150,000 people then have those pay fifty percent of what they were paying plus a hundred. Or another more thought out plan. These people have the power to save billions of dollars in interest, if they were to somehow get something like this going. Also, this could be used in other things to, like paying off vehicles, or investing etc.!

With A plan like this the first 150,000 people would have more money to spend in the economy, as they would be paying say 500 dollars even every other month would work, to help the others become mortgage free, each month the money would grow, to pay off more until they would eventually, start to reverse it to pay each person back all money they paid in until they were 11 million people mortgage debt free. This would boost the economy a lot! In the end they would own Their homes, and it would not cost them anything to own them! It would be a way to solve this under water mortgage problem!

This could be done for others to who would want to form a club to be debt free, of different things, like car payments, homes, or any other debts that they pay on monthly!

Just wait until after Obamacare kicks in and millions of people are without work or healthcare because it will be cheaper for their company to drop their insurance and swith the employee to under 30 hours a week and the employee will have to purchase Obamacare insurance on their own or risk a huge fine if they don't. Things are going to get a lot worse and you haven't seen nothing yet. There will be millions of more people without jobs or insurance and yet be faced with a huge fine for not having it like the middle class and poor can pay any type of fine. Your hurting us more than helping.

It was in our paper this week, the Virginian Pilot that our state is dropping all employees that currently are eligible after 30 hrs to 29 hrs so they do not have to offer health care on them.

Watch how many lose their jobs over ACA

If true (and a big "if), how is that worse than the Republican disaster that has been taking place since 2000 and before? Republican, et al, scumbags crashed our goddamn economy, obstructed and sabotaged our recovery and now bitch about attempts to fix things....

The GOP was voted into their second-largest majority in the House since 1948. Seems like some people wanted some type of checks on the President and his Democratic colleagues.

Please allow the sequester to happen, GOP. It will be the ONLY way besides bankruptcy that we ever see any significant cuts in spending.
