Republicans: Rubio, face of the GOP?

Chris Cillizza notes in the Washington Post: “Marco Rubio’s selection to deliver the Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union cements the Florida senator’s role as a first-among-equals when it comes to the future leaders of the party, and sets up an intriguing dynamic over the next few years between Rubio and the man he almost certainly wants to replace.”

“Marco Rubio won’t just give the Republican rebuttal to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night. The Florida Senator will give two. One in English. Otro en Español,” according to the Miami Herald. “It’s the first time such a high-profile speech will be given in two languages by the same person, and it’s a sign of how crucial the Rubio has become in the GOP efforts to draw more Hispanic support and rebrand the party.”

“Republican Savior” Marco Rubio is the cover of this week’s Time magazine.

Rubio is giving his state of the union response in Spanish? Whatever happened to the requirement for becoming a citizen be the ability to speak English? I thought this was one thing everybody agreed upon? Hey, the number two language spoken in Maine is French. We want equal time!

All you have to do is import a few million illegal French and not only will you get speeches in French but, the signs in stores will include French, the ballots at the polls will be printed in French, when you call for help on a problem you are having you will have to press "3" for French and on and on. Problem solved for you Amy.

I'd blame Texas for letting in those illegals.

All of the 'hype' about the Republicans needing to court the Hispanic over the immigration issue is misguided.

In 2008, McCain strongly courted the Hispanic vote - even proposing his own version of 'comprehensive immigration reform', and got only 31% of the Hispanic vote. In 2012, Romney did NOT overtly seek the Hispanic vote, and got 27% of the Hispanics vote - THAT'S NOT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE. In fact, it only resulted in about a 700,000 vote difference against Romney - that's only about one half of 1% of the vote.

Hispanics are far more interested in the same things as other Americans - JOBS, and on that issue, Obama has been a huge FAILURE, but the media keeps hiding the truth - which is as follows, according to the official government Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov);

Average number of people working in 2008 (including job losses at end of year) = 136,794,000.

Average number of people working in 2012 = 133,254,000 That's a LOSS of more than 3.5 million jobs - something that the media has been careful NOT to report.

And on cue Roy shows up to misuse numbers, working in averages because it skews the numbers in the direction of the argument he chooses to make and ignores the fact that the economy was in freefall throughout 2008.

And also ignoring the fact that 1,460,000 Baby Boomers have reached retirement age in 4 years.

John B, Des Moines, IA "And on cue Roy shows up to misuse numbers, working in averages because it skews the numbers in the direction of the argument he chooses to make and ignores the fact that the economy was in freefall throughout 2008....And also ignoring the fact that 1,460,000 Baby Boomers have reached retirement age in 4 years."

And I'm sure you prefer to 'cherry pick' your dates to 'skew the numbers' to your preconceived notions. Unemployment claims 'peaked' about a month before Obama even took office, so the 'freefall' stopped under Bush, and that improving picture has merely continued to follow the trend that started under Bush.

While 1.46 million 'baby boomers' may have retired over the last 4 years (if your numbers are correct), a total of about 6 million additional people have JOINED the working age group because of population growth, so that's a fallacious argument to explain the lack of employment gains under Obama.

One final comment on employment - Presidents don't 'create' or lose jobs - their POLICIES do, and Obama has had 4 years of anti-business/anti-growth policies (Obamacare, moratoriums on energy production, tax increases on business owners, new regulations, etc.), which helps explain why this has been the weakest economic 'recovery' in recent history (the recession ended almost 4 years ago).

Rubio will be the latest republican to crash and burn by giving the response to the State of the Union address.

Remember these guys look good till they open their mouths and speak. Anybody remember that fiasco a couple years ago when Rubio stumbled through a speech at a republican gathering? Or the Jindal speech three years ago. These guys can't handle being out of the republican bubble where they get cheered every time they take a breath.

Cool, does that mean we can start throwing the "messiah" talking point back in the faces of the wingnuts?

        1. Being a monolingual, please speak slowly so I can understand it with my small brain.

        2. Since it's in Spanish, will he be talking about me?

        3. How do I know he's not telling Latinos that the borders are wide open & unmonitored during his speech?

        4. Will it be true Spanish, or the GOP dialect sPanderish?

        1. I think you'll get it just fine.

        2. Of course...as "Real Americans" we know that ANYONE speaking in a foreign language is talking about us.

        3. Duh, what else would Latinos care about?

        4. sPanderish is the only language Conservatives know.
