VIDEO: First Read Minute: Another potentially self-inflicted wound

NBC's Domenico Montanaro discusses the battle over the sequester cuts between President Obama and House Republicans, as well as the president's nomination for the next Secretary of the Interior.

Discuss this post

I'm starting to wonder if the President can do anything right in the eyes of the MSM?

He could cure cancer and the headline would read; "Mr. Obama didn't get it done fast enough"!

If anyone is dying the death of a thousands cuts by self-inflicted wounds it would be the right wingers.

Democrats are strongly united while Republicans are in an historic state of disarray!

I'm tired of ALL the false equivalencies.

Please give it a rest...

Does anyone else besides me feel as if we are in a recurring episode of The Twilight Zone? I feel like all we ever deal with anymore are these "fiscal cliff" issues. So tired of this repetitiveness. I wish both parties would get their @!$%# together, albeit the Republicans have more @!$%# to get together, but I am trying to be impartial.

Amy, I like O's tie, but Dom's tie looks like he put on a Zebra! LOL

Imagine that, divided Republicans. Uncontent, or should I say discontent, with their Wars on Women, Gays, Blacks, Hispanics, Unions, Teachers, Non-Christian Religions, Birth Control and gawd only knows what else, they have finally evolved to declaring WAR ON THEMSELVES!!. Now that is some funny monkey-business.

As demonstrated at those gun shows a couple of weekends ago...

If this is what is passing as professionals these days, I would hate like hell to see what the amateurs could accomplish.

Sequester's first cut is going to be to our active duty military. Like they haven't given enough to their country.

Yikes, I used the word evolved - should have used devolved. They do seem to fight for the lowest rung on the evolutionary ladder.

JFK - as a rank and file amateur, watch out, your party has declared war on you and your fist full of friends.

I strongly doubt that.

More impending disaster drama. Gawd, it would be nice if just once, Congress functioned and actually did what we pay them to do--we pay them to compromise, to put aside their ideology for the good of the country.

I blame the GOP who can't seem to find their way out of a paper bag with the lights on and bright-colored arrows to follow. This could have been avoided back in 2011 if the GOPers could have seen something beyond"defeating" President Obama as a goal. The GOPers turned down the grand bargain, then those same republicans blocked the Super Committee's efforts because, heaven forbid anyone raise one penny in taxes on the rich. Stupidity personified.

Nah, much easier to write inflaming headlines on false equivalency!

If the rest of the country has to take an automatic hair cut, then so should defense. While I fully support our military and veterans, the programs that help them, etc., the defense budget is bloated and has been for sometime. That said, the automatic sequester cuts to everything would send the economy into a stall, then another crash. We would eventually emerge but we be badly weakened for years to come.

I disagree with republican legislators (Ryan for one) wanting to do zero cuts to defense and take all the automatic sequester cuts out of general spending--that would be a disaster. That attitude makes this country look more like North Korea where all the money is spent on a powerful military and weaponry while the country itself is deprived of all other things of value and the citizens go hungry.

That's because their pay can't be cut, as per the Constitution. They did however vote against a pay raise for themselves. Wasn't that nice of them?

Agree 100% with you, Jody.

Oh, I agree, lisa, but I guess we can't not pay them, no matter that they only actually work(very loose word there!) a collective total of something like 4 months out of the year. My thoughts about this are in relation to many of them on both sides of the aisle.

I would love to be Obama's speech writer:

"People want some sensible (gun control, immigration laws, tax increases, insert topic of the day) and the folks in Washington need to listen and get this done".

don't have to worry about questions after the speech, he doesn't take any.

On a side note, the Boy Scouts of America announced that they are rescheduling the vote on whether or not to end the ban that keeps homosexuals from participating in BSA activities. They released the following statement:

For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America has been a part of the fabric of this nation, providing it's youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. In the past two weeks, Scouting has received an outpouring of feedback from the American public. It reinforces how deeply people care about Scouting and how passionate they are about the organization.

After careful consideration and extensive dialogue within the Scouting family, along with comments from those outside the organization, the volunteer officers of the Boy Scouts of America's National Executive Board concluded that due to the complexity of this issue, the organization needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy.

To that end, the executive board directed its committees to further engage representatives of Scouting's membership and listen to their perspectives and concerns. This will assist the officers' work on a resolution on membership standards. The approximately 1,400 voting members of the national council will take action on the resolution at the national meeting in May 2013.

Coincidentally, leadership also earned their Procrastination merit badge.

In addition to the Procrastination Badge DaNoid mentioned, the Boy Scout leadership (if we can call them that) earned another Discrimination Badge.

Bet the religious groups (the Mormon Church is the biggest supporter) and anti-gay paranoids got to them and threatened to take away their money.
