Boehner: DREAM Act 'worthy of consideration'

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said bringing up something like the DREAM Act would be "worthy of consideration" a day after his No. 2, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), embraced the plan that would give children brought to the United States illegally a pathway to citizenship.

Rep. Joe Garcia, D-Fla., joins The Daily Rundown to explain how Congress can move forward on immigration reform.

The idea is "worthy of consideration," Boehner said Wednesday at his weekly press conference. As speaker, he said, he wants to "do everything I can to foster this continuing conversation" regarding immigration.

Yesterday during a speech that aides described as "Republican re-branding," Cantor expressed support for ideas found in the DREAM Act that were voted down by Congress in 2010 saying.

"It is time to provide an opportunity for legal residence and citizenship for those who were brought to this country as children and who know no other home," Cantor said.

Boehner did not wholly embrace the DREAM Act, however, which is understandable considering the speaker has to weigh politics within his conference.

Here we go! My family is caucasion. We can not get scholarships or "free" college financial help because we A. are caucasion which makes us B. not a minority and C. we are considered lower middle class. And when I say lower we are on the line. Sure we could save eight hundred dollars a month if we want to live where a drive by shooting is the norm in the neighborhood but we have chosen to live in a quiet neighborhood where you can walk to the local shops and feel safe. My children have worked very hard with GPA's of 3.7 and 3.8 respectivly in High School. They were not jocks or presidents of the debate team. They were simply great kids with good grades. In college they still work hard and pass each class. We can not afford OSU, or FAU or Harvard. Once they get their associates degree they will have to move on to another more expensive college to get their bachelors degree in their field of study. Which of course we will have to take out a loan to pay for the education and spend years paying it back. Yet anyone from another country that comes here be it legally or illegally can and does receive scholarships and free college financial help because "they" are a minority and is the "only" basis they need to get the funds. Has anyone truly looked around lately? Caucasion people are becoming the minority. No problem. America is a free country and everyone deserves a chance to enjoy the freedoms this county offers. Let us not forget the generations of soldiers that fought and died for the legals and illegals to come here and live their dream. The minorities fought a good fight and rightly so to have the same opportunities as caucasions in the past decades. We now have today very wealty minorities. Being caucasion in this country is not a ticket to ride and because you are different you should not have a ticket to ride either.

delray, federal law prohibits tuition aid from taxpayer dollars.

Anything you're experiencing/seeing is either privately funded or is state policy. State policy varies from state to state.

So, as a "caucasion" student loans, local scholarships and other federal/state financial aid is available if you qualify. However, your beef is not with the federal government.

I am not so focused on race, but your government is DEFINITELY selling out people like you-- hard working middle class Americans (of whatever race) in favor of the despicable ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS and by pledging allegiance to a corrupt system by which lawbreaking prevails over law-abiding behavior! THIS IS WRONG!

Give us examples of wherelaw-breaking prevails over law abiding behavior.

          Thanks...

What is despicable is granting special treatment for lawbreakers (most of whom who have violated our immigration laws, have committed identity theft, have driven sans license and insurance, have commited perjury on an I-9, have failed to pay the requisite taxes (not all, but most), game the system, obtain taxpayer funded benefits to support their anchor babies, deplete our other social welfare programs like WIC, etc. The demand to be above the very rules to which 1 Million LEGAL IMMIGRANTS adhere each year is despicable. Promoting rewards for lawbreaking is despicable.

We permit appx. 1 million LEGAL immigrants to come into the U.S. every single year (more than all other countries combined). LEGAL immigrants play by the rules, wait an extended wait, pay significant fees and incur other costs, and go through a background check. Granting rewards and special treatment for immigration lawbreaking is permitting the lawbreakers to prevail over the lawabiding LEGAL immigrants --- not to mention that being in favor of rewarding ILLEGAL immigration ONLY SERVES to devastate the job opportunities and wages of AMERICAN CITIZENS and LEGAL immigrants. Granting rewards and special treatment for immigration lawbreaking is a FORM OF CORRUPTION and will only further engender more of it! Lending support for such corruption is despicable!

Angelica, "most of whom..."? Assumes facts not in evidence...

No one is "permitting" illegal immigration. This administration has deported more illegals than any other previous administration. They've added to border security and continue to budget for more patrols and technology. Illegal crossings are down for a number of reasons... And your initimation of "job killing" illegals is unfounded.

No federal taxpayer funded benefits go to illegals. It's against the law.

And finally, what's your solution to the 11 million people here right now? You can't deport them, that's an impossibility.

              #28.5 - Wed Feb 6, 2013 4:01 PM EST

@Chip Angelica is completely unreasonable when it comes to immigration. She will tell you she is all for legal immigration, but she consistently posts this type of crap with no facts to support her position. Her anti-immigration stance is like so many of those that use it to hide their bigotry.

TamL-- The only thing that's patently unreasonable is your support for subversion of our laws. You have no facts to support your position-- I always defend the LEGAL immigrants. Identify one instance in which I have made an "anti-immigration" statement! YOU CAN'T BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENED! Identify one instance in which I have made a "bigoted" statement! YOU CANNOT BECAUSE IT NEVER HAS HAPPENED!

Wrong Chip--- ILLEGALS UTILIZE AN EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF OUR TAXPAYER RESOURCES:

See, e.g., MSNBC posted Article by the Associated Press etitled: Health Reform Threatens Clinic Care for Illegals, an excerpt in relevant part is as follows:

But in states with large illegal immigrant populations, the math may not work, especially if lawmakers don't expand Medicaid, the joint state-federal health program for the poor and disabled.

When the reform has been fully implemented, illegal immigrants will make up the nation's second-largest population of uninsured, or about 25 percent. The only larger group will be people who qualify for insurance but fail to enroll, according to a 2012 study by the Washington-based Urban Institute.

And since about two-thirds of illegal immigrants live in just eight states, those areas will have a disproportionate share of the uninsured to care for.

In communities "where the number of undocumented immigrants is greatest, the strain has reached the breaking point," Rich Umbdenstock, president of the American Hospital Association, wrote last year in a letter to Obama, asking him to keep in mind the uncompensated care hospitals gave to that group. "In response, many hospitals have had to curtail services, delay implementing services, or close beds."

The federal government has offered to expand Medicaid, but states must decide whether to take the deal. And in some of those eight states — including Texas, Florida and New Jersey — hospitals are scrambling to determine whether they will still have enough money to treat the remaining uninsured.

Without a Medicaid expansion, the influx of new patients and the looming cuts in federal funding could inflict "a double whammy" in Texas, said David Lopez, CEO of the Harris Health System in Houston, which spends 10 to 15 percent of its $1.2 billion annual budget to care for illegal immigrants.

Realistically, taxpayers are already paying for some of the treatment provided to illegal immigrants because hospitals are required by law to stabilize and treat any patients that arrive in an emergency room, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to cover the costs typically comes from federal, state and local taxes.

A solid accounting of money spent treating illegal immigrants is elusive because most hospitals do not ask for immigration status. But some states have tried.

California, which is home to the nation's largest population of illegal immigrants, spent an estimated $1.2 billion last year through Medicaid to care for 822,500 illegal immigrants.

The New Jersey Hospital Association in 2010 estimated that it cost between $600 million and
$650 million annually to treat 550,000 illegal immigrants.

And in Texas, a 2010 analysis by the Health and Human Services Commission found that the agency
had provided $96 million in benefits to illegal immigrants, up from $81 million two years earlier. The state's public hospital districts spent an additional $717 million in uncompensated care to treat that population.

                1. The MiamiHerald Editorial Board reported on February 14, 2010, and I quote:

Caring for undocumented residents cost Jackson $150 million last year, about as much
as it received from the voter approved half-penny sales tax.

This means that virtually the ENTIRETY of the additional tax paid by South Floridians goes to pay for the healthcare of those who aren't even supposed to be in in the United States. Meanwhile Jackson is on the verge of collapse. This means that American citizens and LEGAL immgrants are in jeopardy of losing
                their fail-safe healthare safety-net!!

                2. Also, as posted on the LA County Mayor's website:

January 19, 2011 -- Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich released figures from the Department of Public Social Services showing that in November 2010, $53 million in welfare benefits ($22 million CalWORKs + $31 million in Food Stamps) were issued to parents who reside in the United States illegally and collect benefits for their native-born children in Los Angeles
County -- representing an increase of nearly 3 million from November 2009. This
amounts to approximately 22% of all CalWORKs and Food Stamp issuances in the
                County.

In 2009, CalWORKs and Food Stamp issuances to illegals totaled nearly $570 million. Based on the monthly figures in 2010, the total cost for the year will exceed $600 million.

"When you add this to $550 million for public safetyand nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year – not including the hundreds of millions of dollars for education," said Antonovich.

                3. On April 3, 2011, the Seattle Times reported as follows:

As the state Legislature looks for ways to close a $5 billion budget shortfall, lawmakers are eyeing millions in cuts that could reduce or eliminate services used by illegal immigrants. Washington is projected to spend more than $300 million over the next two years on services illegal immigrants can tap,
primarily welfare and health care for children, the seriously ill and pregnant women.

Washington state estimates it will spend more than $300 million over the next two years on services illegal immigrants can tap, not counting K-12 education. A breakdown:

$125 million on health care for 7,400 pregnant women ineligible for Medicaid because of federal restrictions.

$73 million on welfare for children. The federal government requires proof that the children are here legally, but not their parents. This program also can't be changed.

$59 million for medical and dental coverage for 25,000 children from low-income families ineligible for Medicaid because they can't prove they are here legally.

$24 million for kidney dialysis and cancer treatment for 1,300 low-income people ineligible for Medicaid because they can't prove they are here legally.

$15 million for in-state tuition subsidies for students who have lived in Washington for at least three years. The state does not check legal status.

$5.6 million in nursing-home care for low-income undocumented residents.

Chip-- Not enforcing our immigration laws (and granting immunity from the law to ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS is equivalent to permitting the immigration lawbreaking.

The solution is to enforce the law. When you have an ILLEGAL in custody, they should be deported. If the law would be enforced as against employers hiring ILLEGALS, that would dissuade most of it. Yes-- the ILLEGAL immigration would stop if we enforced our laws becuase the messsage would resonate that you cannot profit from your illegality-- now the opposite is true. Also, if it was not rewarded, most would leave!

THE SUREST WAY TO ENSURE THAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION WILL CONTINUE IN PERPETUITY IS TO REWARD IT AND TO EXCUSE ILLEGALS FROM PLAYING BY THE RULES BY WHICH 1 MILLION LEGAL IMMIGRANTS PLAY EACH YEAR!

Since they have already demonstrated a willingness to break our laws I think it prudent that we consider they may choose not to comply with any new ones. What then?

Especially ask those that have become American citizens through the legal process.

So Liberals and Boehner what law makes US taxpayers responsible for providing a better life for everyone in the world?

So do you believe anyone that puts one foot on US soil is automatically a citizen?

Does that include radical Muslims, Drug Czars, or even the masked men from Acapulco?

Another concept worthy of consideration: that those that are here illegally, consider going thru the LEGAL process of becoming a citizen should they desire to stay here and get any type of benefit from the USA.

I know, novel concept which doesn't seem to have been mentioned as an option.

do you know that pulling tooth with a pencil is a far less painful and less stressful and less frustrating affair than going thru the so-called butchered discarded and left to die "LEGAL" process???

Even the lawyers, who got paid to go thru the process, are pulling their hairs out.

I know, novel concept which doesn't seem to make sense when you're inside the glass window looking out.

the "fact" that members of Congress are willing to talk is the only good news here. No amnesty or anchor babies. Immigration to America has ALWAYS been legal. ANYONE entering by other means is here in violation of our laws. Outta here!

Tell that to your grand parents. If you look back far enough, I'm sure you will find many "illegals" in your family.

First thing that has to happen is for the border to be SEALED. Yes, illegal immigration is lower than it has been in years, but Reagan gave amnesty to 6 million in 1986 with the understanding that border security would be implemented. Now we have 15 million. Seal the border first, then figure it out.

This is yet another vicious attack on US citizenship.

"Sorry about your mom, but too many other Americans have been hurt by illegals to dissuade me from my argument"

I suppose you are also going to blame illegals for the poor performance of US students. You wine about illegals, but ignore the fact that "immigrants are the backbone of this country. I have grass to cut and trash to pick up, would you like the job? (and before you answer, I do not hire illegals).

The so called illegals will do the work americans won't (they prefer to get fat watching TV)

It appears your problem is with Capitalism, the exploit of the poor for the profits that feed the rich. Ask US companies to pay you what you want, and not what the market will bare, you will be unemployed for a long time. Capitalism is built on the backs of the poor, plain and simple.

Does "worthy of consideration" translate to "no" or "hell, no?"

Why is it that every one of these Dems cant see the real problem. Yes the illegals are taking the fruit picking, cow milking, hard working jobs that supposedly no one in America will do. Well the problem there is welfare. If our welfare administrators would stop giving away everything to these lazy Americans and tell them sorry if you dont have a job we cant help you. Welfare is suppose to be assistance not what you live on. Make the welfare recipients get off their dead a$$ and go out and do those jobs. If they dont pay enough to pay all their bills and feed their families give them a little welfare assistance, but dont tell them they are better off if you dont have a job so we can give you full assistance and its easier for them to keep track of.

Obviously the Republicans actually did do some practice at there last Pow-Wow. Instead of just saynig NONONONO, they have learnd to say that it is worth consideration. LOL

Angelica, if you read for comprehension, you would have noted that I said "federal" and the amount of support provided to illegals varies from state to state.

If you're that vitriolic over the way your state distributes taxpayer monies then leave.
