President Obama to visit Israel this spring

President Obama will visit Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan this spring, the White House announced Tuesday.

It will be his first trip to Israel as president. Republicans have been hotly critical of Obama for not having visited before now.

The planned trip came after a Jan. 28 talk with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said.

"The start of the president's second term and the formation of a new Israeli government offer the opportunity to reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel and to discuss the way forward on a broad range of issues of mutual concern, including Iran and Syria," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement.

Obama did travel to Israel as a senator in July of 2008 during his run for president.

NBC's Shawna Thomas contributed to this report.

What? They TALK to each other and are now going to sit down face to face in Israel? Cannot WAIT for the spin doctors of the RW to tell us all why this is happening . . .

Let's get real - what can Republicans say? They can't accuse him of going to garner more votes - nope. Let's see - that's pretty much all they ever had so I can't figure out how they'll try to spin this one!

Allen,

"wasn't the last time the Republicans were there they were getting 'jiggy wid it' in the water somehwere...?" A few were. Why do you feel it necessary to make broad generalizations? That's the sort of attitude that racists have; you might feel entitled to being something like a racist bigot because you are a Democrat, but that's not right.

@ Dave in Western NY - I'm thinking you need to write the WH and ask if you can ride along with the President...because you need to get out and about a little more than you have been.

How in the world do you go from admitting that "a few were" indeed acting like fools, to me somehow being a "racist bigot because you are a Democrat"?

For people who blow a few gaskets every time the 'race' card is allegedly used...you sure seem to make an valiant effort in throwing it out there yourself.

"you might feel entitled to being something like a racist bigot because you are a Democrat," - ...and I'm making generalizations?

Would give members of their intelligence community pause I imagine understanding the relationship between the President and the Prime Minister . . . if I'm the USSS I'm worried about this.

I would not be too surprised if this was a face to face meeting to agree on a plan for Iran. Maybe Obama is finally waking up to the fact that sanctions are not going to stop Iran. Either that, or Obama thinks that Netanyahu is getting ready to launch an attack on Iran and this is a last ditch attempt by Obama to convince him that the US still has Israel's back and to hold off. Either way, I think that the main purpose of the face to face is to talk about Iran. No doubt Israel's strike against the Syrian weapons convoy that was headed to Lebanon and into Hezbollah's hands shook up Obama. I doubt that Netanyahu bothered to even let Obama know they were going to do it, let alone consulted Obama about it. In any case, I am sure this made Obama nervous about Iran in more ways than one, such Iran using their proxy Hezbollah to attack Israel using this incident as justification. I would say that right now the odds are about 50-50 that there will be a war with Iran before the end of this year and about 75-25 there will be one before Obama leaves office.

Iranian nukes- Zero. Israeli nukes- est 200 to 300, PLUS all the armaments we have bought and paid for that they have.

I say- if they want to attack Iran, let 'em. (of course, they need to be on their own, seeing as how they have the upper hand, militarily)

I didn't say anything about birther...that was a historic reference to the joy Obama took in the Arab Spring (uprisings) where he supported the over throw of oppressive regimes in favor of other oppressive regimes.

Again, seeking sanity in the Republican party but you and others like you show there is none to be found. All we ever see from your ilk is crudeness and a total lack of intelligence or class!

It seems when you loose touch with a conversation you like to make things up, like calling me a birther or you call names when there are comments you don't seem to have the capacity to understand.

Oh yes, your reading comprehension issue was to do with the birther comment....so how would you rationalize birther from the remark I made that would have been more apropo to Obama War mongering in the ME again. Cause well he hasn't managed to start sh&* in Jordan yet but it is a whole new spring. I suppose it is a new opportunity for him...after all historically we like Jordan. You have nothing to say about anything that isn't denigrating to our President and yet you try to attack me? You're definitely in over your head.

Go back and try to read - or have someone read to you. NOWHERE did I even mention "birther." Again, reading comprehension is definitely NOT your strong suit! You truly do need help but I'm sure the help you need is much more intense that you will ever get.

Now go back and go over my posts - one word at a time. Find anywhere that I even mentioned "birther" in regard to your posts.

You truly are a blithering idiot! And you're accusations about President Obama are just as ridiculous! And, "is anybody out there?" Clearly NOT in your case!

Obama had to delay an earlier planned visit while they drained and sanitized the Sea of Galilee. It was either that or change all the books and literature that refer to it as a freshwater lake. Now they plan to chlorinate it whenever the republican ignoramii come for dinner...

On a lighter note: They've been told they can frolic in the Dead Sea as much as they'd like for three reasons... 1st: It's hoped that they can't do much damage. B: It's the new namesake of their political party. 3: They're known to have a penchant for frolicking with dead things.

Seeking Sanity...I'm back. I have to admit my kids and darling dear one take priority when they come home, you are way down on the list. How sad it must be to be alone with only your computer for company. I do owe you an apology for misreading one word. So my apologies it was a mistake. I don't, however, owe you an apology for my remark that Obama seems to love the civil wars that he has supported through the Arab Spring. That one is on him and will mark his legacy for generations to come. Those seven terrorist attacks US embassy's around the world in two years, because of the Arab Spring that he supported under the might of America, will be his legacy one that he will share with Hillary Clinton.

Now as for your fixation on my children.....that is really creepy and a topic that you have introduced on more than one occasion.

Chick Binder....yes I repeatedly mis-read the word like once and caught the error when I reread at Seeking Sanity's suggestion. And like a responsible person I have apologized. As for your joke...you probably should not make Comedian your night job.

As for Feisty and Seeking Sanity....Being the target of the shooting or getting shot does not excuse Giffords or her employees from neglect in providing security for the event. Just because she got shot does not absolve her of responsibility before the shooting. Others got shot and other died because, Gifford's neglected to provide security to protect her constituents at a public meeting. She certainly is no hero and yes she was a victim. As I have said time and time again, the shooter is the guilty party. So Feisty, if you are so opposed to my position on Giffords then why did you not enter into rational discussion on that topic? Wait I should not use the term rational with you. Are you just unable to carry on a legitimate debate or do you just have to sit and crow about nothing. It is easy for Seeking Sanity...she just has no substance, ever. When at a loss for substance she just attacks children. Gosh, I hope seeking is a she because it would be entirely a deeper level of creepy if she were a he.

I do think it is funny that between the three of you, none can come up with a valid point on the original topic of the conversation....Our esteemed President and his driving interest in chaos in the Middle East and Africa. Perhaps, you all support his efforts to help the ME burn.

Are people sure that Mr. Barack Obama went to Israel in 2008 or when he had just taken office in 2009? Is he claiming to have visited there then? If it was in 2008 he was not President... just a tourist like thee and me.

What I remember was his first trip to the Middle East after he took office as President, and he appeared to me to have taken pains to.... leap quantum-ly past Israel when he jumped from Egypt into Germany, having dropped off here and there on the Mediterranean lands and other nations surrounding Israel including the Muslims, but not Israel itself.

He gave a speech in Egypt which caught my attention, and I couldn't believe my ears... so I researched for a copy in writing and, well, that speech seemed to me to be about 5th or 6th grade competence, and that is a compliment.

The article in the Washington Post, June 2, 2009, "Obama's Middle East Trip a Balancing Act," is well worth reading. As is Mr. Obama's attitude toward Israel back then. In my opinion he out-smited the anti-Semites here and there whom we see ... occasionally.

Of course, the word "Semite" is a fascinating conglomerate of both ancient and modern peoples describing their ancestry and essentially are virtually the same both for Muslims and Jews today. Worth a look-see.

But of the ancient ones, Abraham may be the most vivid as he led his tribes "out of Ur in the Chaldees," to protect their rights to believe in one God, not many.

President Obama has been the only President to not kowtow to the Jewish lobby. He was furious to learn the extent of Israeli spying and infiltration against their strongest ally. Only now will the US have a bit more cred as an honest broker in trying to get a peace deal over there. The problem remains that none of the parties actually want one.

The term palestinian was introduced by roman/greco conquerors to insult the israeli land inhabitants.

Was it now - got proof of that, or has Newt been bending your ear. Now, did the insulting term, palestinian, apply to just arabs, or just the jews, or both. Was it only used for Muslim Arabs in the region?

Oh, and swami historian, what do we do with those references from Egypt and Assyria to the land they called Peleset and Pilistu.

Now let me guess, in your mind, Greece and its people didn't exist either. You see, at one time, there was no Greek currency, buildings, papyri, or scrolls. Of course we had Athenians, Spartans, and a host of other neighboring nations, but they were not Greece. Does that make Greece an invented land? Was Grecian simply an insulting word invented by Persian's to describe those dirty Athenians and Spartans?

Well, US fighter jets and tanks to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt; weapons to the people in Libya when they rose up against Qaddafi, virtual amnesty for illegals that were brought here by their parents when they were very young, welfare benefits and drivers' licenses to illegals (OK, not so much Obama on this one but DEMOCRATS in California), large percentage of GM ownership to the UAW, favorable pro-union rulings from the NLRB, ie. the Boeing plant in N Carolina (or was it S Carolina)...you asked!

I don't think he is all that well regarded by Netanyahu, nor has Obama treated him with the dignity he deserves. But this is how relations improve, and there is a lot more going on in that region that Obama could address while there. Pat, how can you complain about Netanyahu voicing an opinion about our election, when Obama campaigned as much oversea as at home. The world takes an interest in us.

Ahmadinejad Visits Egypt 2 Days After U.S. Delivers Fresh Batch of F-16 Fighter Jets

                  Feb. 5, 2013 1:15pmErica Ritz60

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with his Egyptian counterpart Tuesday in the first visit by an Iranian leader to Cairo in more than three decades, marking a historic departure from years of frigid ties between the regional heavyweights.

Ahmadinejad's three-day visit, which is centered around an Islamic summit, is the latest sign of improved relations between the countries since the 2011 uprising ousted Egypt's longtime leader President Hosni Mubarak and brought an Islamist government to power in Cairo.

Such a visit would have been unthinkable under Mubarak, who was a close ally of the U.S. and shared Washington's deep suspicions of Tehran.

Though Egypt's shifting alliances are unavoidably apparent, the United States is continuing to arm the country. On Sunday U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson held a ceremony in Cairo to mark the arrival of four F-16 fighter jets from the United States. Twenty in total are due to be delivered throughout 2013.

"Today's ceremony demonstrates the firm belief of the United States that a strong Egypt is in the interest of the U.S., the region, and the world," she declared.

According to the United States Embassy website, the U.S. has delivered 224 F-16 aircraft to Egypt.

Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi gave Ahmadinejad a red-carpet welcome on the tarmac at Cairo airport, shaking his hand and exchanging a kiss on each cheek as a military honor guard stood at attention.

The two leaders then sat down for a 20-minute talk that focused on the civil war in Syria, security officials said on condition of anonymity. President Bashar al-Assad is a close regional ally of Iran and, more importantly, a doorway into the region. But Cairo is home to the offices of the main Syrian opposition council, which has a strong presence of members of the Brotherhood's Syrian chapter.

Though the Syrians will chart their own future, the opinions and actions of Morsi and Ahmadinejad will certainly hold sway. If the two agree on what they believe should happen in Syria's post-war future, the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran could expand their influence in yet another "Arab Spring" country.

During his visit to Egypt, Ahmadinejad is scheduled to meet with Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the head of Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world's premier Islamic institution. He is also scheduled to attend the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Cairo, which starts Wednesday.

Security officials said Ahmadinejad also will tour the Pyramids in Giza.

Egyptian Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb (R) holds hands with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a meeting at Al-Azhar headquarters in Cairo on February 5, 2013. (Photo: AFP/Getty Images)

Once close, Egypt and Iran severed their relations after the 1979 Islamic Revolution when Cairo offered exile to Iran's deposed shah. Relations further deteriorated after Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.

Relations are clearly warming, but Morsi faces pressure from Gulf states and some of his own citizens not to cozy up to Tehran.

Egypt's hardline Al-Nour Party wants Morsi to make it clear that "Egypt is committed to the protection of all Sunni nations," and that Iran's support of Assad has not gone unnoticed. Liberal Egyptian politician Mohamed Anwar Esmat Sadat, nephew of the late President Anwar Sadat, is also concerned. After Anwar Sadat was assassinated over his pro-Western policies, Iran named a street in honor of his assassin.

But Egypt's leader has spearheaded an "Islamic quartet" of nations to try and resolve the Syrian crisis and Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are all included.

I hope Benjamin Netanyahu punches him in his lying mouth and I hope the Israelies throw rocks at him for the things he has tried to do and the things he has done. I have never been so ashamed of a President since the peanut farmer.

I am with you 100%, Everything should be passed by our most important ally and our most important contributor to the political system and the most important people in the whole world and more important than any issue this country has. Absolutely, they need more money and more weapons and more of everything at the expense of our taxpayers because they are "God's chosen people." That is why the middle east is in the mess that it is in.

Mr. Obama has left the barn door open far too long. All the livestock has run amok and gone feral. We may never be able to get them all back in the corral now..

If I were the president I would be very careful about visiting Israel rght now. The Yahoo running israel is certainly no friend of the United States.

I'm wondering if Obama will use this trip to either slap someone's face or get slapped in the face himself. We'll see ...
