Subscribe to RSSPresident Barack Obama said if congressional negotiators cannot draft a full budget by March 1, they should at least come up with a short-term combination of spending cuts and revenue increases in order to stave off deep federal spending cuts scheduled for that date.
"If Congress can't act immediately on a bigger package, if they can't get a bigger package done by the time the sequester is scheduled to go into effect," Obama said, "then I believe that they should at least pass a smaller package of spending cuts and tax reforms that would delay the economically damaging effects of the sequester for a few more months until Congress finds a way to replace these cuts with a smarter solution."

The sequester, reached as part of 2011 budget negotiations, was never actually supposed to take effect. Rather, its deep cuts, including almost $500 billion in defense spending over nine years, were put in place as a trigger to get Congress to agree to more comprehensive budget and tax reform.
House Speaker John Boehner released a written statement before Obama’s remarks, blaming the president for the sequester and saying he would not support any additional revenue increases.
“President Obama first proposed the sequester and insisted it become law,” Boehner said, adding, “We believe there is a better way to reduce the deficit, but Americans do not support sacrificing real spending cuts for more tax hikes."
In recent weeks, members of Congress appeared to be playing rhetorical chicken over the cuts, with some suggesting they were resigned to the across-the-board cuts.
“I think it’s more likely to happen,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) was quoted as saying by the Washington Post last week.
But the White House has stood firm on the self-imposed cuts, with White House Press Secretary Jay Carney underscoring Friday that the sequester was always intended to be replaced.
“The negative consequences of implementation would be bad across the board," Carney said. "That's the point. So Congress needs to do its job."
And the president hinted that revenues would remain central to all budget negotiations, telling CBS in a Sunday interview that “there is no doubt we need additional revenue coupled with smart spending reductions in order to bring down our deficit."

You POS why don't you educate yourself a little bit. It is not congresses job to write the budget. The president (I wish we had one) is responsible for writing the budget by the first Monday in Feburary, then he submits it to the OMB to check the math, then it goes to congress, Odumba has refused to do this part of his job for the past three and now four years.

Secondly, the first two years, he had total control and other than his health care, that has driven up insurance cost, what did he accomplish? Last but not least, the house hasn't stopped him from doing anything, he goes ahead makes it happen and doesn't care about the constitution. When will he get unemployment down? It is time to bite the bullet. Let the sequester happen. Then us the CRA on the FY2013 budget to fine tune and shift spending between the various budget lines making the tough choices of what to fund and what to axe.

You are wrong. There were three major events that are mostly to blame for the recession, and Bush had nothing to do with them.
The dot com bubble burst started under Clinton and continued as the market corrected itself, millions of jobs were lost as well as pensions and investments.
Then there was 911 which added another jolt to an already struggling economy.
The major event to cause the recession was the housing collapse which was fueled by the affordable housing act, an act that was written by Dodd and Franks and signed into law by Clinton. The act forced banks to make loans for housing purchases to people who could least afford them.
What's intetresting is that Bush never tried to pass the blame to Clinton.
If you know of anything that Bush did to CAUSE the recession, let me know.

Living next door in Indiana, i can tell you not so well from the segments i have seen on some businesses moving here. A large tax increase there, and bada bing ..... the debt is larger. Why do the Liberals alway try to gloss over what they want with terms like "short-term" when they mean permanent and "Revenues" when they mean TAXES. A short-term fix isn't good enough. The Liberals had 4 years of total control and couldn't pass a budget as is required and now it's all the conservatives fault that the Liberals went wild spending money they borrowed from China and China now wants the assets they pledged as collateral too. Plus the Liberals think another stimulus plan will solve what the failed one didn't even thought they haven't changed one thing about who would get it except the unions would get more money they shouldn't get.
No more of this short term krap. The government got its tax increases. It is now time for those promised government spending cuts.
Sir you are spot-on - government spending is out of control. As a federal manaer, I am convinced we could reduce the federal workforce by 80% with no impact to services or Soldier readiness.
