McCain compares Iranian leader to monkey; draws GOP charge of racism

Matthias Schrader / AP

Sen. John McCain

Updated 12:52 pm ET. Always one to speak -- or Tweet -- his mind, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) Monday made a joke comparing Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a monkey, something one Republican congressman charged was “racist.”

“So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space - wasn't he just there last week?” McCain said in a tweet that also linked to a story about Iran launching a monkey into space.

Some didn’t take so kindly to the not-so-diplomatic quip, prompting McCain, 76, to respond: “Re: Iran space tweet - lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?”

Seeing that, Michigan congressman Rep. Justin Amash, 32, shot back.

“Maybe you should wisen up & not make racist jokes,” Amash tweeted.

Not everyone on the right agreed with Amash. Conservative John Podhoretz, for example, Tweeted this: "How dare McCain say something demeaning & disparaging abt the foremost anti-Semite on the planet." And this: "So...it's defend-the-Jew-hater-from-the-war-hero day."

It’s not the first time McCain’s made a joke about Iran that landed him in some hot water. During his run for president in 2007, McCain sang about bombing the country.

Asked by a GOP primary voter when the U.S. would send an “air-mail message to Tehran,” McCain said, “That old Beach Boys’ song, ‘Bomb Iran?’ Bomb, bomb, bomb—, anyway.”

McCain’s response then as now? It’s just a joke -- "get a life.”

“When veterans are together, veterans joke,” McCain said at the time. “And I was with veterans and we were joking. And if somebody can’t understand that, my answer is, ‘Please, get a life.’”

McNasty just can't help himself can he?

Every now and then his white sheet slips...

Monkey jokes are a particular favorite with the compassionate Christan, family values klan!

Someone should do us ALL a favor and take this twits tweeting ability away from him.

Meanwhile, in news from the exciting world beyond …

Canada with a full head of sense has sent the ubiquitous cent to the cenetary. May this useless coin no longer adorn penny loafers. Lines at the checkout counter are expected to be 50% faster as there will no longer be a bunch of old farts counting out 67 cents in pennies and losing count several times. On a sad note, there will not be enough time to read articles in the local paper … Turtle Raped by Horde of Snails … “I, I don’t know if I, I can ID them officer, it, it happened so quickly!”

blackcatwhitecat........ still laughing.

I don't know which is worse when it comes to money exchanges at checkout. Is it the 'old fart' who takes forever to count the money or is it the young person who can't add and fails to be able to count back the change so they just hand you a wad of bills/coins.

I've watched young people hand back the wrong amount many times even though the cash registers actually do the math for them now. Very sad.

Actually, McCain is not guilty of racist or bigoted speech. Rather, he was just ripping off another comedian that had done the same joke last week. I think it was Jon Stewart.

In this case, those that are complaining should follow the advice of the immortal William Shatner and "Get a life!"

There's a difference between McCain and Jon Stewart - one is a comedian and the other is a US Senator. Comedians don't have to be diplomatic, but US Senators do.

To draw comparisons between the Iranian idiot, and a monkey is badly insulting to the monkey. And the man is right, freaking LIGHTEN UP! I certainly didn't see any of you silly liberals getting all up in arms when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke of "wiping Israel off of the map", or "eliminating the Jewish State". And you all want to play the race card??? Seriously??? Unless you're a real monkey, or ahmadinejad, you really don't have any input, other than, "Oh, a republican calling the Iranian dictator a monkey? What a racist old fool!!!". But by all means, defend a man that's only a few months away from possessing the means to erase millions of people with one, single bomb. That is, once his new centerfuges are up and running in a few weeks. I've heard ignorance is bliss, so stay blissful, my ignorant liberal friends!

Democrat or Republican, picking on McCain tells more about the racism, prejudice, bigotry and intolerance of the accuser more than it does about McCain.

Any reason to hate McCain, even stupid reasons that have nothing to do with racism will be decried as racism.

So for those of you who don't actually read news for information. Iran claims to have sent a monkey into space. It seems though, based on observations of those interested, that they sent one monkey into space and yet a different monkey came back. I think it is funny that they are doing now what we did over 50 years ago. Or not because when the US and even Russia sent monkey's into space we got the same simians back.

So let's all hear it for Ahmadinejad being the first Iranian in space....perhaps they will get a new and improved leader back.

Just for fun...reference a picture of Ahmadinejad

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.biography.com/imported/images/Biography/Images/Profiles/A/Mahmoud-Ahmadinejad-38656-1-402.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.biography.com/people/mahmoud-ahmadinejad-38656&h=162&w=162&sz=1&tbnid=9UYYVI7a1-21JM:&tbnh=159&tbnw=159&prev=/search%3Fq%3DAhmadinejad%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=Ahmadinejad&usg=__2314Jb7z-pAKFjvxdN-EbOs1lvQ=&docid=dwEXgSP8TIkO9M&itg=1&hl=en&sa=X&ei=zP0PUbG2N4KNqQHD1YHoAw&ved=0CIgBEPwdMAw

Then a picture of the monkey (or plural because they are both pictured)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/9846573/Iran-insists-it-did-send-monkey-into-space.html

There is an odd similarity...if you are working from a evolutionary point of view.

His "monkey" comment, makes one believe that he is seething about the deserved GOP election losses. If McCain keeps making such uncontrolled remarks - he will ensure another Democratic presidential victory - 2016!

Is it possible to interpret the joke in a way that is not racist? Absolutely. McCain is not necessarily referring to race with his comment comparing Ahmadinejad to a monkey. He could be comparing the antics of Ahmadinejad to the antics of a monkey - that's what it seems like to me.

The indignation of some of the posters about this incident seems ridiculous to me. I understand some people have a problem with senators not acting like senators should (whatever that means - I'd like to ask how they felt when a certain former President was receiving sexual favors in the Oval Office, but whatever). This (non) issue is for the voters of the state of Arizona and nobody else. McCain is not beholden to anybody but his constituents.

This will allow those that grow the crops of war to keep production at profitable levels and allow "Sinetors" to represent their 'Merkin constitchencies while remaining on the crest of the military industrial complex wave they've been "hanging 10" on for 10 years....

Can't allow the heat to come down by accepting that people halfway around the world have any right to think what they want... Besides, what would the tattered, out of date, racist remnants of the rag-tag miscreant repugnican party do without a boogey-man to scare their minority of scaredy-voters with? All the while acting tough and blustery as if they're here to save them from the great danger they've made up?...

The repugnicans protect you from their Boogey-men the same way the NRA protects your second amendment rights... By pretending there's danger afoot to separate you from your money. Both individually and as a group.

If I was a monkey, I'd be mad enough to spit barbed wire. Imagine, being compared to a barbarian! Wait, is that PC. OH $hit now I'm a racist too. I guess we conservatives will labled racist no matter what we say. Liberals on the other hand are overtly racist, I mean how can we expect any minority to be able to compete with us on a level field? Liberals are the biggestracists there are, too stupid to even realize it, blinded by their own self righteousness.

HChris - I felt the same way actually. Coming from a LWer who normally feels no desire to defend Mr. McCain. I didn't necessarily see it as a racist quip.... I saw it as an old-codger comparing Ahma's antics to that of a monkey.... as in "quit monkeying around and stop blocking the television you little sh!t!" (My grandfather) In his age group, such an addage was a pretty common way to poke fun at someone who acts goofy or silly... unfortunately racist people adopted it as well and applied it to minorities for not only the behavioural connotations - but the physical ones as well.

I do think his being a tad out of touch and a bit senile likely has something to do with the oversight, though. As a Senator, he should be more aware that comparing people of color to 'monkeys' has become a very dangerous prospect and could easily get you slapped with a charge of racism - even if it truly is not meant that way whatsoever.

But since then he has evolved into a nasty, bitter, vile and hate filled old man who simply cannot get over the fact that he lost in 2008. I would like to think he's getting senile but whatever the reason, the sooner he retires from the Senate, the better off the nation will be.

We know McCain can dole out a good joke, his best one was giving the world Sarah Palin!

The fact that you would disparage McCain over insulting this terrorist who has publicly stated on numerous occasions that he would like to wipe Israel off the map, is just more proof that you liberals secretly hate Jews and Israel, and that you have absolutely no respect for a war hero like John McCain, or any other veteran who has made the ultimate sacrifice so scum like you can run your filthy mouths.

Can I mention that your dear friend Ahmedinejad had to mount a media campaign to counter the notion that he had BODY ODOR issues?

Just remember and repeat after me, "Marxist speech is protected under the First Amendment, but anything other than Marxist speech is HATE SPEECH and therefore banned..."

In other words, if you want to SILENCE an opponent, call them "racist"--a term that has pretty much LOST ITS MEANING from such overuse. That Senator McCain, who spent YEARS as a POW before most of you were even BORN, had the temerity to oppose the Dear Leader in a free election means HE MUST BE DESTROYED by the President's hand-puppets in the media. And when the Dear Leader wishes to be President-for-Life by either running in or cancelling the 2016 elections, the media will call it good. Constitution--WHAT CONSTITUTION???

oops, Laniukai. Your bigotry is showing ("scumbag Islamist). Agreed that he is a scumbag....but putting Islamist in there opens a wider eye. This is probably a good time for me to ask a question I have harbored for years: Because McCain was captured and imprisoned.....is that the definition of a hero? I'm not exactly sure how being in prison necessarily or automatically makes him a hero. I know he may have been released if he had made anti-American statements (and he didn't).....but I'm not sure that makes him a hero because 1. you are trained and ordered not to do that, and 2. you would be a traitor if you did. I know he was tortured, but so were Islamic terrorists....are they all heroes, then? I always thought heroism was an unusual act above and beyond the call of duty - not just surviving terrible years in a jail cell. Is everyone killed in combat a hero? Maybe. And certainly more than one who sat in a jail cell. But how about those in the military that are run over by a jeep on the base and killed? Heroes? It seems we throw that term around pretty loosely (and some, like McCain make a whole career of it).

I've heard lots of people call George W. Now every ethnic group is counted, principally by the liberal establishment, as its own race. The terms race and special interest group are not synonymous.

Ask a racist who they hate, and that's where you get how many 'races' there are. It's not because libs 'create' them - that's just silly.

Race isn't even a biological construct.... it's a social-ethnic differentiation based on a variety of factors; but most notable of such is whether or not the society they are in differentiates them from others, as well as how they self-identify. Physical features are a prominent characteristic of how someone identifies - but there are also cultural, language, and other factors that play greater or lesser roles in such identification.

For example, asian people will often pare themselves down into smaller groups - Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, etc. The US "establishment" (white people mostly) just call them all 'asians' and make no significant differentiation when it comes to their 'race' in this country. But in Asia (and among asian communities stateside), those varieties take on as much significance as black/white/hispanic/asian etc does here.

What the Democrats should refer to as indignant, is the race on race violence in Chicago. Not race against another race, race on same race. There are two sides to most issues. In the case of youth violence in Chicago, the Democrats have all favored being the aft end of the mule. Why can this be said, because there hasn't been any leadership in Chicago but the Democratic Party. I favor McCain's comments. I'm not as old as he, but am quite familiar with calling, " A spade a spade, and if that isn't good enough call it a @%*!$ shovel ". I'm an independent. Calling someone a monkey in a position of political leadership is hardly disparaging. I'm sure if McCain had all the bad names leveled against him over his political career tattooed on his arm, his arm would be long enough to dunk a basketball from mid court. As your father probably told you, but you weren't paying attention, " You're not going to be able to get through life not being called a SOB. You just don't want to be known as a Stupid SOB ". In the case of the Progressives wanting to cure the world's problems, with the City of Chicago as an example of their political "cure", I think they are deserving of the adjective prior to SOB.

How is it racist to compare a horrible man to a goofy animal with less brain than a human? I don't get the random racist comments!!! I actually think it was funny and I don't care who said it! Its not like he is going to be our next president, he is just acting immature is all! He is embarassing but I could hardly call that racist!

Twitter and Facebook and other vehicles of social media are BAD NEWS for politicians and public figures.

A smart individual who is interested in maintaining a credible, dignified and influential presence would dispense with social media altogether, dispose of his/her tendency to spin poorly thought-through one-liners, and always 'carefully present' his/her image to the public. The constituents of elected Members of Congress EXPECT digniied individuals to representing them.

Sen. McCain, the US Senate is not a private boy's club where adolescent, sophmoric and undignified behavior is acceptable. And when you are a US Senator, your private behavior outside of the Senate chamber is equally important.

The US Senate should be a place revered for its 224-year history. As a US Senator, when your personal behavior demeans you it also demeans the US Senate and demeans our nation.

It's time for you to retire, sir. The dozens of examples of poor judgement you have demonstrated over the past 4-5 years - and now seem to be demonstrating on a weekly basis - are completely destroying your once admirable reputation, and place in history.

Redeem yourself, retire with your remaining dignity intact, and preserve a place in history consistent with your decades of public service.

jerryb, If being a bigot is defined by calling anybody and Islamist, then calling anyone a christian or Buddhist must also be a sign of bigotry. You leftist lemmings have been so bent on making others look bad, you've lost touch with reality. There are good Islamists and there are bad Islamists, just like with Christians and Buddhists. Now back to your adult education night classes jerryb.

As for McCain being a hero, you have every right to sit on your okole at home and watch the heroes of our citizenry be sent off to war in defense of the rights you enjoy while putting those down who you could not hold a candle to. Don't worry jerryb, there are still plenty of our citizens willing to risk their lives to protect you. Even if you have no appreciation for it.

So.. setting aside the question of whether it is ever desirable for a senior statesman to call a sitting president of a country, a monkey, no matter how odious that sitting president may be, let's analyze this. McCain, Ahmadinejad and the complaining GOPers are all white men. One white man calls another white man a monkey and a third white man calls the first white man a racist for doing so. Huh?

Now, if McCain had called Ahmadinejad a creature reference offensive to Ahmadinejad's religion (which would be an expression of religious intolerance, not racism, to be fair), then maybe there would be something to discuss here, but I'm not aware that the Islamic Prophet takes any particular offense to having one of his followers referred to as a primate.

So it comes down to GOPer logic. I mean, it's fair for us Dems to complain that McCain is being undiplomatic and unprofessional, but, frankly, it's more fun watching the GOPers continuing to self-destruct. So.. Have at it, folks. This one is all you. The rest of us will stay quiet.. and amused.

Did you insult him with all types of insults, which may have blurred the bigotry lines, or did you only insult him with the normal decent insults? If you spoke about him in any manner of which to converse here (which I am sure is toned down plenty) then you absolutely crossed that line you are so eager to defend. You can say you didn't, but I have been around plenty. You're the pot calling the kettle... well, dare I go further for fear of a liberal race attack, but you get my drift. However this in no way deters the left wing progressive jerks from emerging from under their rocks with the usual shrill cries of racism. They should be chastised for the morons they are and told to go f*ck themselves.

    Steve,

For all the drilling of Hillary and McCain saying he would have never......If these people riot, get out of hand, or refuse to talk with the world about halting their nuclear program, we can thank McCain...We won't need a net film made by some nobody...We have a US Senator on tape.

So where have you been? The failed state of Iran has refused honest inquiry over their nuclear ambitions for years. The failed state of Iran has committed funds and their own military to initiate riots and murder beyond their borders in an attempt to attack Americans. Think back to Libya, well before this remark by McCain. Are you seriously afraid of Iran or their retribution for a remark made by McCain likening AJ to the monkey they sent into space or the monkey they claim to have retrieved from space flight. I suppose you aren't bothered by AJ's threat to wipe Israel off the map.

I see what McCain did as undermining the new SOS Kerry....No talks will take place with BS like this.

I don't think that McCain had any thought of the changing of the guard from an abject failure as Secretary of State to John Kerry taking the post. As for talks...if you look back in time through state business with Iran since their revolution they have proved to be unreliable when it comes to the truth. Why do we need to keep trying to talk to them it is a fools errand. I still hope the real Persian presence in Iran will take their country back.

My best guess is he and his party of war mongers really really need to have us in another war. They want to be calling for a first strike

I think your best guess is really the stuff of a progressives wet dream. We don't want to go to war with Iran. We want the heirs to the Persian empire to stand up and take their country back. We want the young people who have such a tremendous rich and infamous heritage to stand up to their potential and bring Iran into this century. After what Obama has done to destabilize the ME and Africa with Egypt, Libya, Syria etc. The strong voices of the real Persians could truly make a difference in contemporary times to bring peace to the ME.

I do hope that Kerry can make a difference but until the zealots are all swinging from a rope at the hands of their own people it is unlikely. After all the Obama administration was the architect and financier of the Arab spring and look what a mess that has become.

Perhaps you should spend some time familarizing yourself with current events.

Since it is impossible for anyone to say anything which isn't racist any more, we should all have our lips sown together to prevent anyone from saying anything that might offend someone else. Then, to prevent people from writing anything offensive, we can all have our fingers and thumbs lopped off. I know some people are also offended by looks, so all of our eyes should be put out with hot irons to prevent that as well. Then we can all live in a perfect, if silent and dark world where no one is offended by another persons words or looks.

Whereas if we weren't talking the Christian right, then a suggestion about monkeys (or primates in general) and human beings wouldn't be seen as all that offensive, demeaning, or deragatory anyhow. It would be hard to subscribe to the idea of Darwanism as it is currently understood, and not see some relation between Homo Sapiens, and Chimpanzees :D

Oh well, but it wouldn't just be humor to suggest someone is a monkey's uncle, where current theories in biology would place things... So exactly how offensive should this joke be taken and by whom? This seems a lot to do, about nothing here...

One of the most hilarious and saddest things I have seen on TV was when Ahmadinejad was in the USA one time defending the stoning of women in his country and he quoted Jesus, "He who is without sin may cast the first stone..." implying that the men in his country were without sin so that gave them the right to kill a woman who committed adultery or the sin of fornication by stoning her. Of course, a lot of these women are under the age of 12 and were raped. Many of the sinless men are the rapers doing the stone casting. I agree, comparing this guy to a monkey is insulting to monkeys, he and men like him are dumber than the rocks they throw at their women and children.

Shame on all of you! This man is a war hero. He was a POW in Vietnam. He deserves more respect than you will probably ever garner. Please go collect your welfare check, your free phone, your free healthcare, your free foodstamps, and your free housing, your free utilities, etc etc. I'm sure you all are waiting for the free car! I'll continue to work for you, since I have more self respect! See what else you can get out of the working people. "Do not ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!" Lost words of a dead party!

He called him a monkey because this dictator in Iran is maroon.

PS. To the ignorant one who said McCain would have went to war with Iran is being a speculative jackass. Oh I called you a jackass, is that racist? I apologize to all the donkeys out there! 1. I have lost a lot of respect for McCain since he picked Palin as his running mate. And yes, he strikes me as a bitter old man ever since he lost the election.

      2. The Iranian leader is not a monkey. That isn't nice. It's an insult to monkeys everywhere, including the one supposedly launched into space.

      3. Most true part of the article:

"How dare McCain say something demeaning & disparaging apt the foremost anti-Semite on the planet." And this: "So...it's defend-the-Jew-hater-from-the-war-hero day."

You liberals are nauseating. I guess if Obama said the exact same thing it would be funny, because afterall we're talking about someone who trains terrorists that hate and kill Americans when possible. We're talking about someone that wants to eradicate the entire Jewish population. I'm glad McCain basically said to go F yourselves if you don't like it. But if a liberal said it, and a GOP complained you'd be screaming. You're nothing but a bunch of hypocritical garbage.

      1. What McCain said was harmless. Generally it is not wise or good foreign policy for politicians to insult "leaders" in other countries, whatever those insults may be. However, it's Iran. Iran is hopeless anyway.

      2. If you honestly believe that radical dribble about our President, you are a fool. I'm not happy with his Presidency either. But my word, you have no grasp of reality. Or just zero sense in general. You are an example that some people will believe anything, no matter how absurd it may be.

It was guns that gave this country its start and kept it free, but now the dip in charge wants all guns so he can take over the country and turn into a third world like the his ancestors are from.If he likes it so much, maybe if he asks nice they will take him back.

There are Democrats and Republicans, both are Americans. But when one of those is blinded by his party's stupidity (and neither party has a monopoly on stupidity) they jump on anything they can desperately grab to insult the other party. Beyonce's lip sinc, Romney's dog on the car, Obama's birth certificate and now McCain joking about a crazed antisemitic theocratic despot. Note to radical Republicans and Democrats: Screw you head around and stop looking at your arse!

Good post. McCain is a hero, and to dis him for calling Ahmadinijad a monkey is ridiculous. McCain has his faults, but this incident is not indicative of them. he was always a jokster, almost got kicked out of Annapolis because he was a class clown. He graduated near the bottom of his class because of his antics. But in service he was a hero, nearly lost his life. Even though he could have gotten better treatment as a POW because his father and grandfather were admirals, he chose not to.

Hasn't anyone awakened out of their fantasy, that there is no fairy godmother with a magic wand who can wave it around and, "poof", everyone is a middle aged white male living in the United States, or "poof" everyone is a black kid growing up in Chicago. Gandhi said, " A man is not known by his friends, but buy his enemies. " So who are the friends of McCain's comments, and who are opposed to them, as well as the friends or enemies of the President of Iran. Well young progressives don't like McCain, so that makes young progressives the supporters of the President of Iran? No, young progressives want enough world left to screw up when they get old, and therefore an old progressive is just as bad as an old conservative to them. Progressives, like young seagulls, only know to eat, poop, and squawk. Is there any magic wand to change a progressive from their lacking's in analytical skills? No. No more than a fairy godmother can erase other differences in the world. And that's the point. If a progressive could change things, they would have changed a long time ago.

I'm an old white guy who's been harped on for generations, not because I started the problems, nor were the problems mine to personally resolve, but because I'm a white guy. I'm a non religious white guy. I'm a non religious white guy living in the US. I'm a non religious white guy living in the US with a very good education, and talents, and health, and not in poverty. How did I get that way? I was born in the US as a male to caucasian parents... the rest was up to me. I think poorly of Progressives because of the conditions of youth in Chicago brought about by Democrat politics there. I think poorly of the President of Iran because of the conditions of the people in Iran, brought about by religious politics there. So as you can see, from my point of view, the Progressives and the President of Iran have lots in common and that is the inability to function outside of a small group of similar fanatics, and that function is merely blathering about their personal complaints, not actually doing something.

I like to see Feisty's posts. It's not that I agree with them. Nope, just to see if there is any change in the level or volume of the whine factor, sort of like listening to the sound of an untuned gas engine. As long as there are young people whining and complaining, you know there's at least a few of them who might survive to become old, and fewer yet to become old and wise. I personally would have enjoyed it more if McCain had called Ahmadinijad a "punk", given their respective ages.

I'm getting really tired of the double standard we have for politicians. It's okay for me to cheat on my wife, but if a politician does it, they are "moral figures" and should be cast out of office. Or gambling, or making racial jokes. Political figures are elected by us, they are not any better or worse than anyone else. This is not office by virtue, it's office by vote. A normal guy, with strengths and flaws like all of us, who just happened to win a few popularity contests to hold his position.

Obama has forgotten to balance his budget (which btw, he's massively overspent). This btw, not words, is an actual issue, because it refers to the running of the country, and specifically your tax money. But let's find a distraction quick! Hmmm, McCain, a doddering old fool made a comment some comedian made first. Racism! Let's crucify him or something. Get a life!

BUT if someone were to propose a "White" history month there would be so much crying going on it would be pathetic. I grow so tired of minorities crying they arte being discriminated against or that the majority are being hatefull. Truth be known , just about everyone on this planet is a racist of some degree. Oddly enough, white and black are not races. White people are not white , and black people are not black. Sheep are black and white.

McCain is not a redneck, his father was an admiral and he married into money. He is ego driven, so he has to appease his redneck constituants. This is why most of what he says is devoid of intellectual content. With such a limited brain capacity he has to be classified as an over achiever.

I’m having a lot of difficulty finding news coverage, especially on msnbc, about the ongoing FBI investigation of Democrat Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey. He allegedly flew to the Dominican Republic on a crony’s private jet and had sex with underage prostitutes. In addition, the jet owner allegedly had some shady dealings (MAYBE bribing Menendez and/or influencing him on pending legislation).

Yet I can easily find daily stories about Republican Senator John McCain, who supposedly made a “racist joke” about some Iranian government official.

Isn’t the story about Menendez much more significant and news-worthy? I think I already know the answer to that question. The dominant news media in this country is amazingly biased and corrupt.

Sen. McCain has gotten far too much milage from his "war hero" status. While I appreciate McCain's sacrifice in the Vietnam war, it doesn't entitle him to a lifelong career as a U.S. Senator. McCain has digressed from the "maverick", capable of making somewhat intelligent, independent decisions, to a petty, mean-spirited hack. No doubt mistakes were made leading up to the Bengazi incident, but for McCain to browbeat Hillary Clinton to extract some kind of "confession" over the admittedly sad deaths of 4 people, when he never even asked Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc., for an explanation why the WRONG country was invaded following 9/11, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, is outrageous and incomprehensible. It doesn't surprise me that he referred to the Iranian leader as a monkey, considering how he and his righty cohorts treat President Obama, questioning his nationality and patriotism, and obstructing virtually all of Obama's initiatives with countless filibusters. To me, this overriding objective by McCain and co. to prevent Obama from accomplishing anything during his tenure is blatant racism. How else do you explain this kind of relentless campaign against a President that far exceeds the hostility towards any other President in history?
Why the people of Arizona continue to reelect such a nasty, ineffective, and racist character is beyond my comprehension. But then again, they embrace racists like Jan Brewer and Joe Arpaio, so I guess it shouldn't be too surprising.

Well, Amash wrecked his credibility with a solecism. Besides, what's the BFD? The GOP is the official, self announced party of racism. Of all their endless nastiness, this could be the most minor. Compared, for example, to Saint Ronnie (patron saint of the decomposing and already rotten, lying in a mulch of money and sh(*&t) who kicked off his presidential campaign at a place where three civil rights workers had been murdered. Now that's a message! -- to assorted Birchers, Kluxers, and Knights of the White Camellia, aka the Republickkkan Base.

Oh, yeah, and Ron Paul (patron saint of early onset genetic defects) didn't know what was in his newsletter. Right.

Joe Biden has never compared a world leader to a monkey - and Republicans claim he is the the gaffe machine?

Funny it's "lighten up folks" when McCain spits out something nasty, but when Biden makes a clever play on the phrase "unchaining the economy," in front of an African American audience, the same Republicans call him a rascist.

                  You're absolutely right Amy.

Perhaps it would be better if ALL the politicians in the country left the "jokes" for paid comedians.

                  Amy, well said.

If memory serves me, McCain said his "bomb, bomb, bomb...." song was a joke, too. I doubt Iran thought so. These so-called leaders need to think about what they say. Odds are that McCain doesn't even realize it was a republican who called him out for it.

QUIT calling McCain a Racist..........He is just mentally compromised from all of his "service to this country"..............We should all thank him for that and THEN tell him that he owes us all for those planes he crashed while hotdogging it in the sky..............and after he does that.............I will be the first to "appreciate his service"

And then maybe he can get treatment and admit that Sarah Palin is not the best Republican he could possibly have run with; here is a person who demonstrated how poor judgement does not pay Again!.......................you think???

Thank you John for your service..........................Now maybe you can thank the American People for putting up with your party and their racism

Amy B Portland ME....Do you seriously consider Ahmadinejad of Iran as a world leader? He is the tight fisted, antisemitic, puppet overseer for the religious zealots in Iran. They over took the country in a bloody coup roughly 30 years ago. Holding Americans hostage in the American Embassy. They murdered Iranians indiscriminately because they could and so began their reign of terror. The only place they lead in is Iran...no one else in the world would consider them anything more than a failed state that sufferer's upon their own people in order to finance terror and anti-US/Jewish sentiment in the ME.

It's even funnier when we consider the progressives are defending the man that claims there are no homosexuals in Iran and that Homosexuality is an ugly deed. They must really be afraid of the likes of McCain to support a man who is so anti-gay.

^^ Conservatives who's thought processes are so base and shallow that this incident can only be pictured in their pea-picking heads as a "choice of who to defend", and further, that criticism of one is somehow an expression of support of the other... Seriously stupid people.^^

McCain is acting like an A$$ on the world stage. Did that statement make Mahmoud any better? Worse?... See how that works simps? Mahmound is a tyrannical anti-semitic goat-chaser. Did that statement improve McCain any? See how that works simps?

One person denigrates another by publicly launching stone out the existing holes in their glass house and maybe they can BOTH be wrong!!!

Mahmouds jobs is to be an A$$ in that structure that Iran refers to as a government. McCains job is to NOT be an A$$ in the structure we refer to as government here. To be more concerned about the foreign A$$ is clearly un-American.^^

As to the question of what us "pukes" have done... Well, we've maintained our composure so that nature and world history can strike a balnce against such an onslaught of ass-wittedness supplied by the old out-dated factory seconds doing the thinking for/with the GOP.

It's also rather unprofessional. But hey, the dude is old - he has earned the right not to give a damn.

Txmom - no one is defending Iran's President. But, as a persn who is a leader in the Senate, you are expected to have the sense not to poke a stick at the snake. It is only one of the many disasterous things McCain has done over the past 4 years. It isn't humorous - unless you have the intellect of a first grader - and it can prove harmful to the US. Seeking Sanity...you may not think it is funny but many did, not because it was a racist statement but because Iran still thinks the world so dim as to believe they sent one monkey into space and brought back a different monkey. Ahmadinejad let himself open for the joke because he stated he would like Iran to make him their first Astronaut. Ya know Iran can't even prove that their space ambitions would be viable to a living re-entry, so I say let them send AJ from Iran. How can making a joke at a minor leaders expense a joke. Really, he is the poster child for state sponsored terrorism. By all means let us not expose the butt of the joke.

Ah Exactly, what else had McCain done that has been disastrous beyond the fact that he couldn't beat Obama in an election? On second thought that was disastrous for the entire country.

That said, it does not serve the Dems well to smear the GOP as a result of what one person said. I will not smear the Dems for the actions of a Senator from NJ, which are far more appaling than the stupid display of foolery by Senator McCain. I wokred with his office refore his run in 2008 and knew there was no way I could ever support him.

I find it funny that when a Republican insults someone he is a racist but when a Democrate does nothing is said. It was reported on (very little) back before the last election that ex-president Bill Clinton made the same joke/comment twice, just a different version, in reference to Obama back when Obama was running against Hilerary for the Democratic nomination. Clinton made a comment to one of his main supporters that "10 years ago he would be carrying out luggage" and then "10 years ago he would be bringing us coffee", the he being Obama. When it was reported during this last election they were asking the person that Clinton made the statements to if this wasn't racists (like they should have to ask). That person said no because Clinton was just joking and he couldn't be racist because he had done so much for the black people. Nothing more was made of it but let a Republican refer to someone as a monkey (who isn't black) and BINGO he is a racist. Gotta love them Democrates.

Am I right? Course I am...

I don't debate with people who apparently just graduated high school .... at most.

But in case you were wondering, I think theocrats (like Ahmadinnerjacket) are dangerous fools who deserve no respect.

What someone deserves though, and what you do for the sake of representing your country - are two different things.

Adults understand this, though, apparently not kids who insult others with anal-s3x references.

Clinton made a comment to one of his main supporters that "10 years ago he would be carrying out luggage" and then "10 years ago he would be bringing us coffee",

If he did make those comments - it's clear he's musing over how far we have come as a country. Obviously not far enough, but he's right... a decade ago at that time things were different.

                    Amy B. Portland, ME sez:

Joe Biden has never compared a world leader to a monkey - and Republicans claim he is the the gaffe machine?

Funny it's "lighten up folks" when McCain spits out something nasty, but when Biden makes a clever play on the phrase "unchaining the economy," in front of an African American audience, the same Republicans call him a rascist

Amy - I believe you are trying to rewrite history to make a point. Biden said "They're gonna put y'all back in chains." He also said that you have to be from India to get a job at the Seven Eleven. Are you intentionally lying?

You have to wonder ,does anyone actually think before they speak anymore? Liberals, Monkeys,Terrorists!

How about when you are addressing the public ,try to act accordingly and stick to your role. If McCain

wants to be comedian then he should have chosen that field, but we all know thats not his occupation. Like I

said, think before you speak and act accordingly!

Perhaps the definition of "lady" is at question - at least as it applies here. The ladies I know don't use the langauge she uses. Woman, perhaps. Lady? no.

Bush people ran hateful adds about him 9 years ago in SC, but when he lost he endorsed Bush.

HE picked that idiot woman as a Vice Pres candidate.

He wanted military in Libya now Syria and elsewhere in Africa. IF he were Pres, we'd be in three more wars by now.

He ripped into the senator at last weeks hearing, and now as a Senator he calls another head of state a monkey. He is a disgrace. Unless and until the voter idiots in AZ un-elect him, we are stuck with him.

Liberals are just pathetic. If this was a democrat or like Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden speaking a "Black Dialect" then you would be up in arms. Oh wait, you weren't

My gf calls her kids monkeys. Is she racist?

You do show your true colors when women and gays and Christians are being persecuted and all you want to do is claim how the racist the war hero is.

That's right you guys are the dumb party. Take away our guns so criminals and police will only have guns, that way when someone breaks into my house they can rape and torture you, your wife and children, then kill them. BUT WHAT THE HELL THE COPS WILL BE THERE AFTER THE FACT TO INVESTIGATE YOUR FAMILY TRAGEDY! MOOOOOOREEEONS!!

PSS... Bush did many Great things for the people in Africa, but you like to sweep that under the rug with Benghazi, Solyndra, and all the other failed policies.

I shouldn't be angry with you, I just pity you!

                      Wrong Amy.

The complaint was not that Joe Biden is racist. What Joe Biden did, in his best jive, black deacon voice, Mitt Romney "gonna put you all back in chains" is so despicable because of its pathetic, pandering, disrespectful, assumption that Liberals "share the pain" with blacks. Libs are the only ones who could possibly not be racist because they are so good and like Hillary "don't feel no ways tired cause she dun come to faahhhr..........

I thought McCain's comment was pretty funny.

Since when is it we can't make fun of anyone (especially Iran) unless the Progressives come up with the joke (if that's even possible). I then guess we're all required to laugh at the Progressives joke or you're considered an obstructionist.

It sounds like a new amendment to the Constitution needs to be written by the Harry Reid Senate to read as follows; "Only Progressives can tell a joke making fun of the opposition, all must laugh or you'll be flogged and jailed immediately and all your earthly possessions will be sold to pay for the liberal entitlement initiatives."

Mc Cain and his wife have adopted a dark baby girl from india as their own daughter, now all grown, educated woman. racist people stick with their own kind, cannot stand taking care of anybody opposite of their own race, this apply to black, white and all races you can think of. BTW, why is this a hot news. the heated news should be Menendez, the democrat new jersey senator solicitation of a minor prostitute in the dominican republic. the main stream liberal lefties ABC, CBS, NBC and the rest left winger cables did not report this sicko Menendez, now under FBI investigations. ABC put up democrat Harry Reid on TV strongly defending, denying Menendez can do such a sicko thing, with such a simplistic BS explanations of Harry Reid, the huge numbers of viewers were sent to the cleaners.

No, McCain is not a racist, but he is definitely the scariest person ever to come that close to the US Presidency. Any careful examination of this man's history exposes everything but a war hero. But that's another story.

As for the monkey joke (that is now being reported throughout the globe), what people need to understand is that it is coming from a so called "statesman", who was once a heart beat away from the president of the United States, and this is what makes his "joke" an affront to American dignity and US leadership.

John McCain thinks he is a real tough guy. But real tough guys think before they speak and recognize that words (from official representatives of the United States of America) have consequences. Real tough guys engage in the highest level of professional diplomacy and recognize that there is absolutely no advantage in publically demeaning our enemies. Real tough guys publically work toward the most peaceful outcome to achieving their goals but quietly plan every detail in the eventuality of the worst.

When the Rebublican Party finally purges their crazies, and there are many, priority should be given to McCain.

On a different subject, Menedez is pure scum. We have enough evidence for that. No reasonable person could conclude otherwise. Not only does he need to relieved of duty, he should be publically handcuffed and indicted. Make an example of him. Democrats need to step up and and throw this guy under the rug where he belongs.

Yes that's right East to West, McCain is the scariest almost-President in history and he does bring shame to Americans...except for those who who are shameless of course (you know, the Americans who locals love to despise when when they travel outside of the US). Remember, wasn't it McCain e who nearly brought us Palin as VP? The 4 star admiral's boy, born into privelage but turned into an undisciplined spoiled brat who was the most wreckless pilot the Air Force has ever known (and the reason he became a POW in the first place)? The "songbird" of Hanoi whose career has been riddled with lobbyists and special interests (e.g. Keating Five Scandal)? The man with a notoriously volatile temper (named "McNasty" by his classmates) and once publically called his wife a trollop and c...t? The man who openly advocates bombing Syria and Iran? The man who has consistently put his own advancement above all else (after returning from Vietnam he left his first wife - who was disfigured in a car accident - to elope with a rich woman from Arizona from a powerful family who could start his political career), the man willing to say and do anything to achieve his ultimate ambition: to become commander in chief, ascending to the one position that would finally enable him to outrank his four-star father and grandfather? Yes, this is a very scarey man indeed!

But you're losing sleep over the deficit? Why? Because you and those who think like you (mostly older white tough-guy wannabes) have literally been brainwashed by the conservative media bubble, that's why. Obama is not a socialist. He was not born in Kenya. He is not coming after you in black helicopters to take away your guns. Get over it already. He has already cut spending and will continue to cut spending - as it is progressively responsible to do so (as to avoid a double dip recession like we're seeing in the UK as a result of harsh austerity measures). He will continue to advocate that the rich to pay their fair share. He will not get us into unneccesary wars that waste our precious blood and treasure. He will leave America much better off when he leaves than when he took over. Not like GWB. But you never had a problem with him did you? Think about that.

Of course the left leaning lemmings bash a republican for a minor gaffe. But if their leaders would have said the same thing about the murdering Iranian leader who has threatened the US on multiple occasions they would hail them as heroes.

But a U.S. Senator should be above that. A U.S. Senator is representing the United States when he/she makes those comments, and that is not acceptible.

                                        Kaleb-omg,

Better check your history books. Politicians have been making put-downs about other politicians from other countries for hundreds of years. Sometimes politicians more then deserve the characterization and derision. Ahmadinejad is no saint and shouldn't be treated like one. He would prefer to kill you and destroy the freedoms of our western culture without a second thought. So why protect Ahmadinejad in the media. Are you afraid of Iran and have no guts to protect your own position? Are you afraid of winning or just afraid to fight? Many are, and it sure does look that way for you. Get some backbone, have a little fun in life, but do it wearing big-boy pants.

                                          #2.73 - Tue Feb 5, 2013 11:03 AM EST

"Better check your history books. Politicians have been making put-downs about other politicians from other countries for hundreds of years."

I don't need to check my history books. Politicians do put down other politicans from other countries. How does that work out for them? How does that help their position? Does it win allies? Does it change the discourse in any positive way? Does it advance the just cause? Or does it bring the insulting country down towards the level of the object of the insult?

Ahmadinejad does not need to be protected in the media. He should be exposed as the horrible person he is. In the media - by the media. Our leaders can call him out for his evil - and they should. He should be called out for his hatred of Israel, for his stealing of his election, for his denial of the Holocaust. These are valid ways to approaching the issues concerning Iran and its illegitimate leader.

But "get some back bone?" "Do it wearing big-boy pants?" Does cracking a juvenile joke about your enemy constitute wearing big-boy pants? Does having backbone really require our statesmen to lower themselves to the level of tweeting a monkey joke? God, I hope that's not the standard.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Romney was dropped because no one could imagine how you could run for VP without America DEMANDING to see those tax returns. Good thing he was so incredibly unqualified in so many other ways too...

Has anyone ever called Bidden a racist for his comments that were directly anti-Indian? Did you support Byrd in your state when he TRULY was a racist only changing when it was politically expedient?

And I love his line about "when veterans get together....". Kind of like "boys will be boys". Been used to justify a lot of bad behavior.

There is no excuse for his behavior. People say things all the time and try to backtrack them by saying it was all in fun. Racism is not funny in any context and that statement certainly seems racially motivated.

since when is referring someone to a monkey racist. Monkey isn't a race its a species. If you called a person a jacka$$ you wouldn't say that was racist. Back off and ask your self if you would be as indifferent if your self loving president Obama had said it. Or are you just looking for a new reason to bash someone on the right side of the aisle.

One doesn't have to look to bash anyone from either side of the aisle when people like McCain make comments like this; the reason for the outrage is all to obvious.

since when is referring someone to a monkey racist.

Perhaps you don't know or are conveniently ignoring the fact that many people all to frequently refer to people of color (usually a black person) a monkey. Because of that, McCains remarks are neither funny or appropriate in any situation. It reeks of racism pure and simple and there is no place for such in our civilized society.

So I would think McCain joke was warm at heart and very appropriate. What I would like to see is some of these anti american pukes get shot by the Iranians, then lets see them get on McCain... Wait a sec, the Iranians have been taking Americans Hostage and a number of other criminal acts over the last few years!!!! So Yes, Muhammad Ahmadinejad is a monkey, he is being controlled just like one by that Islamist puke of a Cleric!

The age of being able to speak personally to a group of friends is past. McCain's statement was not "official" and his attitude completely understandable. Why is it PC for us to listen to the racist and inflammatory comments of President I'manutjob but not PC to respond in kind. Personally an Iranian friend of mine summed it up quite nicely when he quipped, "Gotta love McCain because, even inadvertently, he always tells the truth! If the president of Iran is actually crazy enough to put himself into space I hope it is a one-way trip for that fool!"

McCain is right, get a life - the comment was not racist and well deserved. He made a joke about a man that wants all Americans (even the Islamic ones) dead and buried. The foul comments he has made about Jews, the Holocaust (he claims it never happened) and his ability to stand in front of Congress and lie with a straight face make him completely and utterly unworthy of the title of human-being. The truth is that the only thing Senator McCain is guilty of is insulting monkeys!!! Yes, politician all stretch the truth, even Obama, and anyone that believes otherwise is simply idiotic. But it takes a real daredevil to go as far as this monster from Iran.

so crazy that most of the world is surrounded by racism and descrimination, and we are here whining and arguing about something stupid like this. This was not a racist comment, this was not intended in any way to be racist by McCain, in fact, those who are pulling the race card are the very ones that are spreading the racism.

on another note, it's true and McCain is right. I could just imagine what they are calling us, but that is ok ?

It's the dreaded Arizany foot-in-mouth disease, it seems to be epidemic in Republican circles (see Gov. Brewer's latest "duck before the egg" ignorant utterance).

Technically this wouldn't be Amadinejad's second trip to space as the first flight was sub orbital and supposedly the simian survived however who can tell them apart? I'm thinking the sub orbital (if it even got off the ground) macaca was crispified and his stand in received the accolades. Hey I've got an idea. McCain used to be a "here we go into the wide blue yonder" type so why doesn't he volunteer to take a Soyuz trip up to the space station?? C'mon John...back up your retoric with some good old fashioned American "can do" talk and take a ride. John Glenn was about your age when he went up in the shuttle.

Cons always seem to say "I was just kidding" when they say something offensive but a comedian tells a joke about a Cheney and suddenly cons think they have a right not to be offended.

Dangerfield, you're right on the money. I knew the John McCain who was on active duty in the Navy, and while not the consummate sailor, he wasn't anything like the Senator we see today. Granted, not many of us are the same people we were 30 or 40 years ago, but his case is different. I feel sorry for the way he has become so bitter about so many things.

Oh I called you a jackass, is that racist? I apologize to all the donkeys out there!

When you're a Senator for the United States everything you do or say refects on America. When he makes comments such as those the rest of the world just looks at us as "Ugly Americans". Thats how we were labeled with that term.

Actually a lot of people are confusing common politeness and manners with being politically correct, a term they gave a negative meaning to so they have an excuse to be as crude and rude as their little black hearts desire.

Where is this racial epithet? Racial epithets towards middle-easterners usually don't involve comparison to jungle primates, these were reserved for Blacks. The proper racial epithet would have been "rag-head" if memory serves me. Liberals, and Conservatives, need to get their colloquialisms correct before jumping on the "racist" bandwagon. This was a joke directed at an individual and whether is was in good taste, or not, the fact remains it cannot be construed as racist since the target is a single individual. It wouldn't surprise me, although I bet it would surprise most of the people commenting on this post, that Senator McCain has more than a few middle-eastern friends. I know for a fact that he had at least two when I knew him and one was Iranian.

While I do think people like McCain are of two generations ago and really intend something as a joke without thinking about the racial aspect of their comment (no, I'm no defending his racially suggestive comment or that it was ever okay to ever make such comment), but these public figures like McCain, a US Senator, need to understand two rules.

                                                          1) Think before you tweet (or open mouth or release a statement);

                                                          2) Negative comments about foreign leaders, whatever one thinks of them, is totally ingorant--we're trying to engage in diplomacy so again follow rule #1.

what the hell do you morons think with , that you should be diplomatic with an insane leader bent on destroying the usa & world dominance , mccains remark was a personal attack & a "joke" on a single person , not the nation of iran or a snide remark about race . GET A CLUE. He shouldnt apologize to anyone. Why dont you ppl just go to iran n take flowers & a coke & sit around singing kumbaya.Iran isnt joking about wanting to destroy the USA or israel or about muslim world domination & their nuclear ambitions arent for power plants , they dont even have any nuclear power generating plants , thats like me going out & buying millions of dollars on gasoline when i dont own a single car. Do you even read from other news sites? Are you aware of iran being behind the syrian attacks on its own ppl & the pouring of weapons into hezbolah hands this past week? The movement of chemical weapons & ground to air missiles into jordan to be positioned against israel. You ppl need to wake up to the real world.

I know you are correct and it could be that McCain has just deliberitively tried to undue any political gains with Iran just to screw Obama and push the US towards another War.

Whether or not John McCain is actually that smart is another story.

This is what they call "the battle for minds and souls". Calling Iranians racial epithets is a great start.

                                                            This was just wrong.

He should have said "Well, they put a monkey up last week, they might as well put a PIG up this week."

No racial overtones whatever, but sure would have ruffled some feathers.

Jody, get off your high horse. The first time I recall the term "monkey" became a racist comment was when Howard Cosell said, "look at that monkey run" while calling the play by play for an NFL game. The runner ran for a touchdown and happened to be black. It was obviously not meant to be a racist comment and had the runner been a white guy, it would have not become an issue. Only the liberals here are making this a racist issue. It is nothing of the kind. McCain could have called Ahmadinejad much worse and he would have been correct.

The president of Iran has made it abundantly clear that there will be no diplomatic resolution to this conflict. He is of the firm conviction that the entire world is destined to be a Muslim hegemony and that it is his duty to Allah that he use any and all force and power it is possible to bring to bear to bring this result about. He believes that the Holocaust is western lies. Ahmadinejab is, perhaps, one of the most dangerous people on this planet. He is not racist in the terms usually reserved for such, he is a religious zealot that happens to be in charge of a country with sufficient resources to be a real and present danger to humanity. The truth be known there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to defend him or his honor (of which he has none). He should be the butt of every joke, the recipient of every insult, the target of every professional and non-professional comic. He is NOT a representative of the true faith of Islam, he is an embarrassment to the entire region; but with the power of an army, chemical and biological weapons and (soon) nuclear capable to keep them quietly nodding their heads while they wait for Israel, or the USA, to clean up the mess so that they don't get the blame from Al-queda and its ilk. Calling a fool like him a 'monkey' is not racist, it is an insult to the species of primates. I, for one, will stand beside McCain and defend his right to insult the man that has not ever controlled his own mouth when it comes to insults directed towards me, my countrymen and my country. Calling this idiot a monkey was rather kind compared to what this moronic reincarnation of Hitler has said about all of you that jump on the bandwagon like dumb puppets to condemn McCain's words rather than understanding the message behind them.

David, Please don't take this the wrong way, but liberals are dumb. You can't speak fact with them. They just need to be outraged with someone when their reality shows aren't on! These people have the most meaningless lives. They probably went to college for music and art and expect the world to give them stuff for free because they are educated.

It is really frustrating because MSNBC does nothing but report this BS and never any real news. I should delete my Newsvine account and block MSN on the computer. I shouldn't let my kids have access to this garbage. I watch the different networks and while some of the abc and cbs are sometimes ok with a slight lean, this MSNBC and even CNN are outright left. Some shows are more neutral on CNN, but not a lot. It's frustrating and I think we conservatives are going to have to start pushing our way further into the media. Too much stuff is overlooked when it is convenient for the liberal agenda.

In those days, officers looked down on enlisted even though it was enlisted that did the grunt work which officers then took credit for if good, or if something went wrong the enlisted man got the shaft. I am a Retired Air Force enlisted man so have been there and seen it.

I would rather think the death and maiming in war is the 'real' grunt work. McCain was Navy, he was a pilot, he was shot down and severely injured AND tortured until the NVA found out he was related to an Admiral. McCain never requested special treatment and was permanently disabled during his time as a POW. Did these things assist in his political career? Without a doubt, just as similar circumstance helped a young senator from Massachusetts become president in the election of 1960.

McCain, I knew personally. He had a great relationship and many friendships among our enlisted population and NEVER looked down on a fellow serviceman in the time that I knew him. Perhaps things have changed but I doubt it. McCain and Hagel separated regarding military and foreign policy in regards to the middle-east. McCain does not see eye-to-eye with President Obama regarding these issues and Hagel was nominated as SecDef by Obama which says all that needs to be said about why they are no longer seemingly on friendly terms. Trying to create a class conflict out of this is wrong.

He was a great senator in his day, but all days must end and perhaps he is living proof that term limits should be part of our Senate and Congress. A monkey is an intelligent species of which I think is at a higher level of evolution, when you compare the now sitting Senator to a monkey. John is just not thinking straight anymore and it seems obvious his senior moments should tell him to retire and collect his many several "tax payers paid" government pensions. He can then figure out how many homes he has as well as pairs of shoes are in his closet! McCain has never worked outside of the federal government other than his military years. Talk about an out of touch with the general working society! Yet he keeps getting re-elected. Uhg!

It is precisely due to mccains involvement in nam & as a pow that he is accutely aware of the degree of evil & deception that an enemy is capable of that makes him an important cog within the defense dept & the intelligence community. HE CALLS IT AS HE SEES IT .

I knew the world leader part was not relevant to what I said, even though it was to yours, and I really don't care that I didn't quote you exactly. I edited it to suit my need. Just like NBC news does. Sorry that it bugs you Anita. Really. It wasn't meant to.

It is not simply because of this comment; McCain since his loss in 2008 repeatedly makes vicious verbal attacks unworthy of his heritage. Perhaps the next best thing for him to do is retire and return to being the once great person he was.

And, before you go there, No, I have never served. I have the utmost respect for those who have. But, that has nothing to do with a Senator of ours (even though he served) not using common sense in reference to the leader of a country who would love to do us harm. It is beneath him to step in the gutter the way he did and it is indefensible.

In 1962, our entire platoon signed up together. We were all from New Jersey and we called our platoon the John Basilone Honor Platoon. John Basilone earned the Medal of Honor during World War II and was from Raritan New Jersey. Each September, they have a parade in his honor and the last two years our platoon marched in that platoon.

In truth, if Earl Miller, a member or our platoon, had not tracked us all down, we would not be having reunions either. You can Google the John Basilone parade. The web site has pictures and the last time I looked, there were some pictures of our platoon. we are the guys in the yellow shirts.

Also, as far as anyone ginving a good crap about what any other foreign leader thinks... Who gives a crap about that as well.

It's unfortunate that he unwittingly gave more press to one of the worst leaders around. It's also bad timing because today we are seeing an increasing number of aviation experts point out the fakery associated with the roll-out of Iran's next generation fighter aircraft. I don't know if what McCain said was all that bad, but it was inappropriate and rather strange coming from someone who was so concerned last week with parsing every word that Hagel said a few years ago. He would have been better served to not post that comment and let Ahmadinejad look silly all on his own ... or with a little help from the Onion.

ps: and nice talk rwnj's ... get a life - oh, wait - this is your life.

Amash must be a desendent of Iranian sprikling and a congressman? The congressman must learn to respect his elders or shut his soup cooler. Unless he has already infiltrated our house!

PERIOD & it doesnt matter to me or any vet wether he is the leader of an enemy or the sheep , although , the iranian general public doesnt hold the same animosity towards the states as mahmoud or the religious muslim leadership , that is why mccains jab was at an individual. He did not give up the right to freely express his opinion (which was a correct portrayal of MA), just because he joined the govt. It was done in a tweet, not to the press or in the halls of congress or senate.

My incorrect spelling of your name is not indicative of my success or failures in life , merely my indifference . You knew i was speaking to you. At a previous post , i did apologize for the doubts , but i will not apologize for my convictions on Mccain or his right to say as he believes . He's earned the right.

                                                                                                        PUT THAT IN YOUR PARADE!

Veterans, SgtMaj-2405614, are NOT an homogenous group.

Some are happy while others are depressed to the point of suicide. Some are wealthy while others are starving but for charity and government assistance. Service left some with a profound distaste for war while others were left with a hawkish predilection for military solutions. There are many differences and no real stereotypes apply.

For example, far from most veterans are boorishly racist either in public or private. Sen. McCain has, once again and unfortunately, revealed he is either a racist or becoming overtly demented. This undesirable behavior is NOT shared by (even nearly) ALL veterans. If you think otherwise, perhaps you should seek other companionship.

                                                                                                            #25.17 - Mon Feb 4, 2013 7:30 PM EST

McCain is a member of the Senate and is not part of the administration or the State Departmenty. As an elected official, he has an obligation to not muddy the waters when it comes to foreign relations. His big mouth is not helpful.

We have lost too many young men and women in wars and many of them did not have to be fought. Some statesmanship might have avoided some of these deaths. Iraq, for example, was an optional war.

However, when someone such as yourself appears to arrogate unto themselves the defense of freedom, you should be made aware that you are not the only one in this conversation who served.

Freedom (of speech) should not be confused with freedom to make a fool of one's self and/or embarrass the nation for which you serve in high office (U.S. Senate).

I for 1 am not sure that the wisest thing to do , is to wait for iran to HAVE nuclear capabilities before we decide to take action . I was not in favor of the war with sadam or the afghan war . Neither of those 2 countries leadership , or their people sought our destruction & i believe that it was through our own leadership's deception that those 2 wars came about. I was not a bush fan . I am not an obama fan either or a mitt fan. I believe we have had a very poor selection for the last 20 or so yrs.

If all the sanctions dont impact his actions , what on earth makes you think a remark by Mccain will?

While such adolescent misbehavior may be (and should be) ignored by those it is intended to offend, it is, nevertheless, an embarrassment to passengers in his vehicle and anyone who hasn't already disowned him (i.e. family). Furthermore, the possibility that he will offend another (equally temperamental) driver such that violence ensues cannot be discounted.

McCain's misbehavior is unbecoming to a (retired) military officer and certainly beneath the dignity of a U.S. Senator. Unfortunately (for him and us), such antics are becoming a pattern.

Ultimately, if you are one who defends and condones such crude conduct, there is little to be gained by asking you to join in rebuking it.

Or you atleast pretend to not know how they are connected. Here are some clues...."white power", "hate groups" and "african americans". McCain is old enough to know how they are connected and how the term used to describe someone of a different race is racist. Other republicans may not come out and say it, but they should know. If you can't figure it out, then you either have "Romneysia" or your mindset is the same as the extremists that have made the republican party what it is today...which isn't the party it used to be (hence the problem). Anyone, dem or rep, would or should know the problem with McCain's statement. Not speaking out against it is a choice, but the damage was already done with the idiot McCain made the statement. He's an idiot....He's a Senator...His statement comparing the Iranian leader was out of line and racist. The Iranian leader is clearly an idiot and doesn't have his countries best interests in mind....but that's not an excuse for a U.S. Senator to compare him to a commonly used term to describe African Americans by racial hate groups like the "KKK". Now you know how "monkey" and "KKK" are related. Mr. McCain was a repectible Senator, citizen and hero. How he's just a bumbling fool and needs to keep his mouth shut for the parties sake.

You don't even show that those responding were AMERICANS. You, further, don't show how many responses came from the same person, etc., etc.. It is little wonder folks, such as yourself, gobble up the mumbo jumbo published on Fox News and similar orifices.
