Congress: Boehner rebounds?

“House Speaker John Boehner has shored up his political clout after a shaky month, persuading his Republican caucus to pick its fights with Democrats more strategically,” AP writes. “His impressive rebound, aided by face-the-facts confrontations with colleagues, helped the government avoid a potential default on its financial obligations — for three months, at least. It also reassured establishment Republicans who feared the House majority was becoming so unpredictable that it endangered the party. But the patched-up GOP solidarity and Boehner’s ability to pass bills without Democrats’ help are certain to be tested again.”

Rich Wall Street donors aren’t happy with Republicans they supported. Republicans liaison to sort it all out is Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, vice chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Politico reports: “Portman’s been busy. He attended 12 meetings in just two days on a swing through New York in January. At one megadonor lunch, he presented a strategic plan for 2014.”

Politico looks at Bob Menendez’s chances at political survival.

Politico also calls Lindsey Graham’s dedication to immigration reform “a reflection of both Graham’s political strength and his party’s rapid evolution on immigration since its November licking among Latinos.”

Maxx, you need to go to a dictionary and look up the word fascist. You don't have an understanding if you think that the AHCA is a fascist law. In truth "Obamacares" just brings us closer to the rest of the world in standards relating to health care. Every other country on earth provides health care for its citizens, except one. There are only two that don't. South Africa is the only other. We spend twice as much and do not get even close as to results that most of these other countries get, and something had to change. While the AHCA is not perfect it comes a long way toward giving patients a bill of rights so to speak and many of its measures will actually lower the cost of our health related problems. My personal opinion is we should have folded everyone into medicare low premiums would have been the result and a higher quality health care system. This by the way is a socialist view, not a fascist one.

The very same people who tanked the economy with their bad business decisions, and pure greed, during the Bush years, are backing Republicans on economic issues? If these losers were interested in improving the economy, they'd be backing Democrats. No, as usual, these over-paid, over-valued greedy pigs on Wall Street are less interested in improving the economy then they are in protecting their own outrageous bonuses and perks.

Maxx, your avitar is befitting you. Foghorn Leghorn is a bombastic blow hard with nothing to show for it. You would't know a Fascist if one sat on your sofa and shared a bowl of popcorn with you. While the business practices are faintly Fascist in nature Americans are hardly Fascists.

Every other industrialized country has a form of socialized medical care. They are generally in good health. The people in those countries are generally healthier than Americans and their infant mortality rate is lower than ours. In discussing "Obamacare" the Congress could have just extended Medicare to everyone with the caveat that you pay for supplemental insurance to help it out. There would be limits on this additional amount and it would all be controlled by a, yes a bureaucracy. The power of such an entity would ensure steady and probably low prices for medication and services. Unfortunately the greed of insurance companies and their lackeys in Congress didn't accomplish that but gave us a very watered down system. Unfortunately the date set for much of it to go into effect is next year after the insurance industry manages to raise their premium prices to outrageously high levels. That's where you're going to pay for it, my friend, through higher premiums before it kicks in with the lower costs and more inclusion it provides.

"Politico also calls Lindsey Graham’s dedication to immigration reform “a reflection of both Graham’s political strength and his party’s rapid evolution on immigration since its November licking among Latinos.” "

I think the Republicans are making a mistake by reading too much into the Hispanic vote for Obama in 2012.

In 2008, when McCain made a big play for the Hispanic vote by proposing a 'Comprehensive Immigration' plan, he only got 31% of the Hispanic vote.

In 2012, when Romney didn't court the Hispanic vote, he got 27% of the Hispanic vote. That's not a very big difference - only about 500,000 extra votes for Obama out of 127 million votes (only about 0.4 of 1%) in 2012.

Pandering to the Hispanics for votes is not going to make that much of a difference.

The REAL difference in 2012 was the estimated 12.9 million extra votes that Obama got from those on public assistance (the Welfare Vote). I guess adding another 17 million people (a 57% increase) to the welfare program under Obama, and those ads about " Rich Romney will take away your food stamps" paid off big time for Obama.

Romney won the groups that DON'T get welfare by 8 million votes, but the 12.9 million 'Welfare Votes' resulted in a net win for Obama of about 4.9 million votes.

Source for data - N Y Times Exit Polls.

Here are the statistics – per the N Y Times exit polls;

Total votes for Obama among those who's average income was under $30,000 (welfare eligible - excluding seniors not eligible for welfare) = 22,300,000 votes.

Total votes for Romney among this group = 9, 400,000 votes.

Net vote gain for Obama from those in the 'Welfare Eligible' group – 12,900,000, and Obama won the overall vote by only 4,900,000 votes.

Very creative to use hundreds of $Billions in public funds for Obama's campaign – expensive, but effective.

"...persuading his Republican caucus to pick its fights with Democrats more strategically,”

This is why the president is going full speed ahead with immigration, gun safety, and economic issues - the GOP knows it cannot oppose EVERYTHING - they've got to be a little more strategic. Because as much as is on the table now, there's more to come including SC justice appointments and the next elections.

If Boehner was a intelligent man he would work things out, put an asterisk by things the GOP doesn't like and wait his turn for the Party to come back to power. Yet the hook up with the far right really kills that chance. Denounce them (the tea party), quickly while you still have time. Next month will be too late, and you courting of the Hispanic voters will fail. Everyone is aware that nothing changes over night. That includes the GOP.

The only thing that "Bonehead Boehner" is 'rebounding' from is his latest of many hangovers. Now poltically "Bonehead Boehner" will never be able to 'rebound' to the level he was at in 2010. He has been so 'uncompromising' and 'destructive' to our economy. This is fact!
