VIDEO: The Week Ahead: Guns and confirmation

It's Super Bowl Sunday, President Obama's pick for the CIA gets his hearing, Obama guns goes to the outside game on guns, and what happens in the man cave…

Discuss this post

Well, it's Friday afternoon again, but I'm having a hard time getting into the party spirit today - gee, could it be that this was a really ugly week up on Capitol Hill? Could it be that it was even uglier around here with the sick, vile comments people were making about Gabby Giffords? Could it be that I just entrusted some data entry for a very picky client to a supervisor because most of her staff can't spell "to", "too" or "two" the right way, and the SUPERVISOR just came over and asked me if she needed to capitalize the pronoun "I" when it appears in the middle of a sentence, too - or just at the beginning? (head smack.....head smack.....) Is it because it's February already and that means summer is almost here? (I hate summer). Or should we just blame it all on Dan Marino?

Whatever.....I'm gonna go get the Dew Drop Inn tune machine cranked up and start drowning my sorrows. Lots of requests and dedications already coming in, so let's get started:

For our new Secretary of State, John Kerry - let's start with Ricky Nelson's "Traveling Man", followed by Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again", slide in some Johnny Cash and "I've Been Everywhere", and finish up with Nat King Cole's lovely take on the classic "Around The World".

For the aforementioned Dan Marino - what else but old Hank's "Your Cheatin' Heart"?

For me, who spent some of the best Sunday afternoons and Monday nights of my life with Dan and who's now left wondering "Where have all the good men gone and where are all the gods?", I gotta have some Bonnie Tyler and "Holding Out For A Hero". What the hell, let's throw in "Total Eclipse of the Heart" while we're at it. Ah, Danny boy, apparently we hardly knew ye.....

For all of us on Newsvine as next Thursday fast approaches, call me a pessimist, but I feel the need for some Creedence and "Bad Moon Rising". This just can't be good.....

And finally.....for John McCain, who's spent the last couple weeks stomping his feet and sulking and throwing attention-getting temper tantrums that would do any three-year-old proud:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDQHjYIojTs

And no, you can't have 'em with tequila, so don't even ask!

Perhaps a little Bob Dylan, The Times They are a Changin'.

Odd how once the gun hearing FR threads were done for the week, all the paid NRA & Friends crowd disappeared. Much more pleasant today.

JoAnn- don't forget the fools that confuse then/than and effect/affect.

Tunes: Count 5 "Psychotic Reaction" for those on the right who holler about embassy attacks and demand to konw 'who knew what and when did they know it?" and then, when 20 small children are ripped apart by lead, say "now wait....don't jump to conclusions here"

What a way to get this party started!! Love the music.

And I want to make the first toast to Hillary Clinton. Cheers!

Okay, I am wayyyy confused right now! I guess I totally missed the heads up launch story(thanks whoever provided the link). I guess I am gonna have to really check this out. I don't get the 15 something or other. Does that mean we are to choose the groups we are in? I'm getting a headache!

Bar keep!! This has turned into a Straight up Whisky day for this girl! And here I thought Friday on the Vine was going so well! I don't think choosing a story with the g-word in it is the best place for Friday cocktails! Any way we can keep shoving out all the right wing nuts so they don't get a word in?!!! Arrgh!

Bali Bob - Thanks for the clarification, I having a hard time with your shorthand there - thought you were asking for "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" or maybe "Itsy-Bitsy-Teeny-Weeny-Yellow-Polka-Dot-Bikini".....then I guessed maybe it was Billy Preston and "Nothing From Nothing Leaves Nothing". We've got 'em all, no problem.

drive-by - Yeah, thanks - "then" vs. "than" is another favorite. And of course they're's always there bad habit of using the wrong word here their and everywhere.....

    GUN/AMMUNITION/MAGAZINE RESTRICTIONS.............................................

I want any of you who are in favor of restrictions to PROVE to me and anyone else how ANY restrictions will absolutely prevent the loss of life to any man, woman or child in the country today, tomorrow or the next day.

We have laws in this country which state that it is illegal to possess/use cocaine and heroine. How is that working out for everybody? Because of those laws NOBODY in this country, not one man, woman or child uses cocaine or heroine; right? Not one person has become addicted to and/or died because of the use of those drugs right?

    Wrong?

Then explain how any of the changes in the laws anybody is proposing will end all deaths related to gun violence. The essence is one in the same. The only exception is that tens of thousands of people in this country already legally own guns and ammunition will still possess them regardless of any new law and a later tragedy could result from the improper use of those weapons.

If I thought for one minute that any legislation would be effective in preventing the loss of life to another person I would be here with others pleading for a quick resolution to get it done. I am sick of reading about and hearing about people killing one another in this country with guns. But the current legislation being offered simply isn't going to get it done.

nomoresameo: when you start with a goal of 100%, you are always wrong. You can't ever get there. But just like cracking down on DUI has helped in the goal of reducing deaths due to alcohol and cars, so can nationalizing some laws help reduce death by guns.

The current problem is that each state has different laws, so if it is hard for someone to buy in one state, they may just be able to get a gun through a gun show or in a different state.

What if we had the same laws across the board? Would it save everyone? No. Would it reduce the amount of deaths by guns, where many people are massacred, and children are among them?

I would sure like to find out.

No one is talking about outlawing guns. But just like common sense legislation can save lives by discouraging drinking and driving, I expect the same with common sense legislation about guns, waiting periods and background checks.

Isn't it worth a try to save a life? I think so.

The current problem is that each state has different laws, so if it is hard for someone to buy in one state, they may just be able to get a gun through a gun show or in a different state.

I fully understand why it may help to reduce certain purchases Newday. But will that solve the problem? Just because fewer people die are we a more civilized society? If only one moron a year massacres more children at a school do we sleep better at night? I know I wouldn't.

All I'm saying is that they need to stop pussyfooting around in D.C. Either go for the throat and try to eliminate the 2nd Amendment completely, or end this nonsense.

Independent Redneck.............. I really don't care what YOU or anyone is talking about at this very minute. I'm hardly the first person to come here and go off thread. Please don't try to tell me or anyone else that a person shouldn't be saying something just because you don't like it. As far as my marksmanship with a weapon, you are far from the truth. I was rated as a sharpshooter because of the training I received in the military. I don't own a weapon and haven't fired one since my days in the military, but I believe I could still prove you wrong if it came to it.

Ain't that the truth (sighs). And to think I used to actually respect this man because of his service to the country and all. Now, he's just another pitiful old man, bitter because his best years are behind him and there's nothing he can do about it. He has absolutely no vision for this nation other than to block anything remotely connected to Barack Obama, simply out of spite. Talk about a sore loser. If awards were handed out, he would take home the most.

Yes. I think if we save one life, we have saved the world. I would like to try.

There is no need to eliminate the Second Amendment, I think it is an important Amendment. People should be able to own their guns.

But do they really need to have enough power to kill 20 first graders? I just don't think so.

I don't know why you gun nut guys are getting your panties in such a tight knot! Not once, ever since this whole discussion begin have I heard anyone, anywhere saying anything about changing or eliminating the 2nd Amendment. No one. Not the president, vice president or any member of congress. By you saying what you did shows how badly you get sucked into the vortex spread by the likes of FOX, Limbaugh and the morons at the NRA. Wayne LaPierre is nothing but a stooge for the gun manufactures who are making billions off of these fear mongering tactics. All of this has been just discussion, in which all were invited to participate in, including the NRA. They've done not one constructive thing other than offer the solution of more guns. That's not going to work. People want real solutions. Now, you can rest easy because most of us are resigned to the fact that nothing is going to change either. You may as well try banning cell phones before you do guns because there are more of them in this country. The only thing that may go through is universal background checks closing the gun show loophole. Most folks seem to agree on that one. So relax and have a drink on the house and enjoy the weekend. The Stupid Bowl is on Sunday and I, for one, can't wait for the new commercials. Hope they're better than last year's crop.

We're in a period where money printing has supported debt markets and boosted stock prices, but none of the massively negative consequences from the flood of money has been seen (leading many people to conclude that there won't be any, which is wrong).

No currencies have been drastically weak, because all G-7 currencies are bad, and inflation hasn't really started screaming, while people are willing to overlook what inflation exists -- for now.

We are at a moment in time - where the act of money printing no longer causes gold to move higher, since it is boosting stock markets and lulling people to sleep.

However, all the drastic consequences are staring us in the face - and will soon start to matter.

But just as it is difficult to tell in advance when the madness of crowds will exhaust itself (as we saw during the equity and housing bubbles), it's difficult to say when the "crowd" is going to realize - that just because stocks are higher doesn't mean that we aren't headed for a train wreck in America.

Eventually the Fed will no longer able to print its way past trouble, not to mention the fact that inflation - is certainly headed higher.

Yeah, drive by, I am that old, and I do recognize those bands, while not personal favorites, Remember protest music. Country Joe McDonald, Bob Dylan. Those were the days, much like these days as today is only yesterdays tomorrow. Jimmy Hendricks, No one can go to bed without remembering Janice Joplin. Purple haze acid, window pane, sugar cube, mini whites were popular with truck drivers and students, and the ever present pot. 100 years later and we are still putting people in jail for a harmless plant. Somethings change and others are always the same.

With sameo, sameo theories we should stop everything that doesn't work 100%. As he said if gun safety laws can't get rid of 100% of the gun deaths, then why bother.

With that thinking we should close all prisons as they don't keep 100% of crime from happening. We should end the drunk driving laws as they don't stop 100% of the drunk driving. Why any laws at all, as the laws certainly don't stop 100% of the crime?

Man Alive what a week not only for We the People but for the World.

    YEEEEEE HAAAW Super Bowl Weekend

Unless I misread the Good Book the Man Upstairs created Tavern’s so we could gather together and watch the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four in a convivial setting with rounds of shots and beers won and lost all around and great talking of trash back and forth amongst friends and rivals.

So as soon as you’ll get yourselves together you’ll need to head on down to the Dew Drop Inn for the Mother of all Super Bowl Weekends. Brought in 10 new Big Screens and put on half a dozen Bartenders’. Just our way of stimulating the economy. Most of the time we try to keep it bi-partisan but I noticed a bunch of purple face paint and the rumor that ‘Ol Edgar Allan has scheduled an apperance slipped in with the wait staff this morning. Sorry but you’ll San Fran fans will just have to deal with it. Couple of shots of that Freedom Lightin’ kind of has a tendency to make best friends out of the bitterest rivals any way. Old Drive – by says he’s going to keep the volume down on the music this weekend so’s we can hear the play-by and just fill in the gaps in events.

Now it’s been brought to our attention that since our hosts have very graciously kept F.R open for us some weekends when events warranted and some of you have been slipping out the back door of the Inn when you really aren’t safe to travel that we need to encourage the use of our ancillary facility.

The Come Back Inn is going to stay open for business 24/7 this weekend. Got plenty of room and just like the Dew Drop Inn we hope that just as many of our friends and neighbors stop in, take a load off and take just as long as you need to smooth out your peace of mind. Enjoy the view. Enjoy the company. Make a memory or two if you’re so inclined. Just don’t tear up the furniture thank you. Just like our participation here at First Read it is what you want to make of it.

Plus that it’s got a big old common room where we can take you if you overindulge yourself down at the Dew Drop. We’ll take you down there and prop you up in a chair in front of the fireplace and keep all your Buddies with the Sharpies off of you so you don’t have to explain a bunch of writing on your forehead if you messed up and didn’t bring your S.O. to the Party.

As always my thanks and appreciation to our hosts for their time, giving me a little place to stand, a subject to comment on, a forum to put it in, and their indulgence when I don’t quite get it right or get a little off subject. I purely do appreciate it. Hope you’ll have a fine weekend and good fun among folks that you know and love. To my fellow participants keep well, keep safe, and keep the faith. We’ll make it. See you’ll next week

Come on Newday let’s get the sleigh hooked up and we’ll go after our friends that are still snowbound and then ferry some folks back and forth between to two Inns. Been a long time since I drove a sleigh and I generally need a little supervision to keep me out of trouble anyway. What you say there dear I’ve even got a little flask that I’ll share to ward off frostbite.

    • 19 votes
    #2 - Fri Feb 1, 2013 5:38 PM EST

I need that sleigh today IR, you should see the snow. But thinking I am going to have to borrow the Clydesdales from up the road, that is if Budweiser isn't using them all for the Super Bowl commercials this week. Gotta bust through those drifts somehow! I'll give you the reins as soon as I see you IR, some of those curvy hills going down into Dew Drop Inn Valley are a bit scary, and I would rather close my eyes and take a good sip of what you have in that flask in your pocket. You did bring it, didn't you?

What oh what have we learned this week? There are some folks that make such an impression during their time on this earth that they just can't be forgotten. Ed Koch was one of those people. I imagine Ed is up in heaven right now, saying "You know God, we can make heaven more profitable by just making these tiny changes", and totally reorganizing the place before the Almighty quite knows what happened. Whatever you thought about Ed Koch during his time in New York, he cleaned it up, and made it into a place that tourists really want to visit. He did that with style and panache, the kind that you just don't see anymore. He was a man that loved politics, showmanship and people, and he left New York a better place than he found it. God bless you, Ed, and thanks for the entertainment!

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton retires from her office, and I hope she enjoys her time off. She has worked hard, done a wonderful job and deserves a good rest! Could you all in the press just let her be, and NOT hector her about running for President? We all need a breather from elections!

To Mark and Domenico and First Read staff, thanks for letting us come here and speak our piece. Been an interesting week, going to be more interesting as we get into trying to do something about guns.

IR! Where's that flask! I'm ready for the party. Will be staying at the Come Back Inn tonight! Have a good weekend all.

It has been a week; I'm hoping those republican senators figure out where they left their manners and civility. It's been missing the past two weeks especially.

    hey IR and NDD,

I have some hand warmers left over from the inauguration I can contribute for the sleigh ride participants.

And some wool authentic Canadian blankets with the red and green stripe on the edge to keep warm. it is right now a high of 1 degree and it is starting to snow.

Hey, Northstar, don't tell anyone, but I didn't need the hand-warmers and toe-warmers a friend gave me for the Inauguration - for me, it was perfectly balmy that day! - so I've been using them to warm up the bed I made out in the garage for the stray cat that I've NOT been adopting for the last two years now. I even bought some more of them last week. Not that I'm the local crazy cat lady or anything, of course.....

Perfect, Northstar, the blanket adds just the right touch. JoAnne, that kitty sure found the right person! My barn cats are doing great, hiding in the straw, and it has been -20 below here. They have a water warmer and get extra food in this weather. But, both are fat and sassy!

Go, Iggles! No, seriously......just go. Take Michael Vick with you. And Merrill Reese. And those ugly uniforms. And that stupid "Fly, Eagles, Fly" fight song. And those fans from the old 700 level. Don't they need an NFL franchise in, like, Albuquerque or somewhere?

What’s it all about Alfie? It is all about February 7 … Newsvine’s very own Mayan calendar.

Bartender, I’ll have a to hell with it all martini … just pass that bottle over here

A list of a few things you may need on February 7- paper towels, extra computer screens, painkillers, a bottle of MacBitch & MacNasty single malt, every filthy word you know, barf bags, your therapist on standby, a dead cat to kick … some extra Depends would not hurt.

Yikes BCWC! I guess I don't pay attention much to Vine news. Thanks for the link. I will answer one question that I saw posed there regarding why on a Thursday.

I work with programmers and the like and when we do upgrades or patches, we always do them on a Thursday afternoon. Useage of systems is usually lower on Fridays as people are prepping for the weekend and it gives you time to make changes prior to Monday which is typically the heaviest day in case your "upgrade" crashes the entire system.

That being said, if not, it was sure good to meet you all!

I am sooo impressed with the dance of a thousand veils Tyler & Sally are doing over there!

Is there a reason they can't answer simple questions? It's one excuse after another...

    BCWC,

Thursday and First Thought should be a a real test. But I have it on good word from a guy named Mark(not Murray) that First Read will be the same for now.... the rest of NewsVine will be full of nations...sounds like a Mayan thing to me....

    #3.7 - Fri Feb 1, 2013 6:22 PM EST

    Please explain in layman's terms.

I'll give it a shot Bob!

If I'm understanding all the double talk by the warden Tyler & his deputy, nothing is going to change here on First Read on the 7th. It will only affect those who utilize Newsvine.

The issues we have with this is, many of us are members of private groups which unless we delete them, will become public. There will be NO PRIVACY moving forward...

These changes feel to me like they are forcing people to either leave the vine or having to pick and chose their nation limit. It all feels very cliquey if you ask me.

I also see where they are excited to pitch this flawed mess to First Read. Who, I believe will listen to input from long time users like myself and many others here instead of cramming this down the throats of viners without listening to their input.

    That's my 0.02 now I need a rather LARGE drink! ☺

Alaska Girl - I love all sports but the Super Bowl is really about everything - the game, the commercials, the half-time - all of it. And, yes, 26 students from Sandy Hook will be singing America the Beautiful (I believe) prior to the national anthem. The NFL flew them there but, of course, the far right sees it as using the children to drag out the shooting coverage.

Never mind that the NFL has supported the school since the shooting. They held a moment of silence before each game the week after the shootings. The wore the names of the victims on their uniforms and some of the players did things in their personal time to support the school. It's a nice way to remember those who died and to bring some fun to the 26 who will get to sing.

As for baseball, still waiting for my Cubbies to come alive - while I still am! (Even though I'm not from Chicago I do love the Cubs!)

    The Empty Chair Returns …

The famous, or is it infamous Clint Eastwood chair from the RNC convention now sits in the office of RNC Chairman Rince Priebus.

How fitting to put that chair in his office. With enormous odds on the side of Republican, Priebus failed to win the Whitehouse, failed to win the Senate, lost seats in the House and if it weren’t for gerrymandering in states that elected Republicans to Governorships and state legislatures it is likely he would have turned the House over to Democrats.

And his punishment for his total failure at winning anything, he gets reelected for another two year term heading the RNC. If his leadership in the next two years is anything like the last two, Democrats, with huge odds against them in 2014, will once again hold the Senate with Dems having to defend 21 of 35 seats and have an even better chance of recapturing the House … Dems only need 18 seats.

You left wingers just keep saying that the Democrats will retain the Senate and retake the House in 2014. That is a long way off and the Party that has the White House usually looses seats during a mid term election. I will admit the Republicans blew the Senate in 2012 but they did retain the House. Further it was apparent Obama didn't have any coat tails nor will Obama be a factor in 2014.

Yes, it is true, but because of the severe gerrymandering(cheating)that the Repubs did, they retained most of their positions. Gosh, you and others like you must be so proud to be the Cheater Party! AlaskaGirl - Get the cold weather in Alaska must be getting to you. Gerrymandering has been used by both parties. You just can't accept the fact the people like a divided Government, they saw what happened when Obama and both Houses for two years. You left wingers are to quick to yell CHEATERS when you loose. Go back and check when the party in the White House won anything during the mid-term election.

Oh, BTW, are we going to hear the left crying about voter ID again? You have just under to years to get that state ID in order to vote.

Okay, took me a few minutes to decipher your comments; you should really consider a remedial English 101 class. Yes, gerrymandering has been used by both parties, but not to this degree and not with such blatant abuse of the system.

No, no need for crying about the other problem your party seems to have and that would be trying to rig the voting process. Nope, we will do what we did this last election and that is to make sure we keep the Cheater Party in check. Somebody's gotta keep the lunatic fringe at bay. It's just always gotta be the Democrats looking out for everyone else while the RWNJ's go off half cocked......as usual.

Hey IR, yeah I'm down here alone, but I am here to work, so
hopefully you won't see any headlines, Ha unless I drive back into San Juan
tomorrow night and bust a Casino. I should only be here about two weeks, but I
will have to come back later in the year for about two months. I also have
about a month long project coming up in the Dominican Republic, I really need
to learn some Spanish, and these folks really need to learn how to drive. It's
interesting seeing a lot of the US and other countries as well, but at the same
time it’s tough being away so much. It's manageable because I never have to be
gone more than two weeks at a time without at least flying home for a long
weekend, and whenever I am in between trips my home is my office, so that is
nice. It's basically supposed to be two weeks out and two weeks home but not
all projects fit into that time frame, but at the end of year it will just
about balance out, 50% travel on site work, and 50% home office work.

Thank you all for the well wishes, I wish the best for all of you as well. Yes a little over a year and so much has happened, I beat cancer, I went to Washington DC to do some contract work for my Unions International office, I was offered my ultimate dream job to be on the staff there but declined because I would have had to move to the DC area, and neither Mrs. Grump or myself was interested in moving away from our family. I closed up my small consulting business because of Mrs. Grumps mothers terminal cancer so I would not have to travel and leave her and my kids alone to deal with that. I took a local job that I hated because it is hard to be an Indian when you are used to being the Chief (no offense to native Americans it is just a manner of expression) and after My mother in law passed I quite that job and took this job and now travel even more. It seems for every hill you must climb there is a downhill slide just on the other side, I never thought I would see such change at this age. I will tell you one thing people are not used to a supervisor with such a favorable attitude toward the unionized workforce when there is one (which is a shame), and my acknowledgement of their skill and worth does not go unrewarded. The same guys that constantly bitch about the unions and their work rules or their pay scale, don't seem to understand how my projects come in on time and under budget. I just manage and supervise the work, I depend on people to do the work, you get better results when you do not begrudge or belittle your workforce, all working people deserve respect, if you treat people like you value them, you will get value back from them.

Good to know you are doing fine in 2013.

When you go to the Dominican Republic, take your wife for a little R& R. Where will you be? I love that country.

    Seeking Sanity,

We stayed at Dreams. it got us hooked on Dreams and Secrets resorts.

What I like about Dominican is that no building can be taller that the palm trees at the resort areas. Not like Cancun etc. And the whole island is made up of coral, and I Went to Santo Domingo and toured the house of Christopher Columbus son's house and the old Spanish part of town. took a day tour by boat from Samana to where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean Sea. We had a lobster lunch and had a champagne toast in waist high blue water on an sand bar with starfish in the clear bright blue water.

Sorry to go on about my trip, but we just had 2 inches of snow and it will be below zero tonight... wish I was in the DR.

I think the high tonight is around 15 - it was lower last night and with the wind is just brutal!!!!

Mark, Domenico, Chuck and the rest of the First Read Team:

Thanks for the many years of providing a zone to voice opinions and thoughts on the various political subjects reported by you. The DDI was always a fun Friday wrap up to the end of a virtual week and it couldn’t have happened without you as hosts.

We understand from the Newsvine handlers, Sheriff Tyler and Deputy Sally, changes are underway for both Newsvine and First Read comments. Alas, the time has come to follow the tactics of Fox News Nation and stamp out the voice of the threads, or as we libs like to call it, the virtual bar. While we may never understand why, the decision has been made and must be honored. Being one that tends to lean towards privacy between friends, but openness between acquaintances, the transparency option being offered is simply one that leaves this poster feeling a bit too naked.

While many posters may jump ship and leave Newsvine and First Read, I suspect many of us will continue to leaf through the comments for a period of time, and on occasion leave a post or two. One simply cannot know the consequence of shutting down the local hangout.

To my fellow posters, good luck, cheers, and the best to you and yours. As accounts and groups are deleted to maintain privacy, I hope our paths will continue to cross. In honor of the imminent demise of the DDI, I offer the following toasts.

    I drink Martinis.
    Two at the very most.
    Three I'm under the table.
    Four I'm under the host

Once again we have a month of slight increase in employment and the stock market is up AGAIN. Housing is up. Companies are hiring again, albeit slowly. It took a few years to get into this mess and it won't end over night. As long as we continue to make progress we are eventually going to get it done. We have to pay for what Congress already spent and we need to make sure they don't spend more on things like bridges to nowhere and so forth until we can afford it again (if we ever could). People realize that cuts alone aren't going to solve the problem nor are revenue increases alone going to solve the problem but a combination will be required.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights. I, myself believe in the Second Amendment. But I also believe in all of the Constitution of the United States of America for what stands for. We the People, they are not words but away of life and of a family of America. One person looking out for the next person and so on. We the America family.

When the Second Amendment was first writing into law the United States was young. America's total population was around 1.5 million at the time. The state of the art firearms at that time were single-shot flintlock muskets with bayonet that had to be manually loaded through the muzzle of the barrel. While the procedure for loading a muzzle-loading weapon was virtually the same whether it was a musket gun or a musket rifle.

16 Easy Steps on How to Load and Fire Flintlock Musket Rifle.

1-Hold the musket with the muzzle pointing up.

2- pour the black powder from the gunpowder hone into a measure that held a the pre-determined amount of powder. A black powder hone was generally created from cow or buffalo horn.

3- then pour the pre-determined amount of powder down the barrel of the musket.

4- place a round cartridge paper on top of the barrel opening. (called the "wadding")

5- place musket lead ball on top the wadding.

6- tap both wadding and musket lead ball in the very front of the barrel.

7- look to make shore that the musket lead ball is fully wrapped by the wadding and not touching the inside of the barrel. This can cause the musket to misfire in your face.

8-Remove the ramrod from its storage pipe beneath the barrel then use the ramrod to pack the wadding and musket lead ball down the barrel until it rested on the top of the black powder charge.

9- make sure you take out the ramrod and put the ramrod back in the storage pipe there it belongs.

10- Raise the musket to a firing position.

11- then pulled the hammer back to half-cock, and poured a small amount of black powder from the black powder hone into the priming pan.

12- then closed the frizzen so that the priming black powder was trapped. The musket was now ready to be fired its single shot.

13- bracing the butt against the shoulder.

    14-Pull back the hammer.

    15- Aim and fire.

    16- repeat the process.

Its been 221 years ago when the second amendment was writing into law. rifles and guns have came along ways from the flintlock musket that can kill up to three people a minute. Now rifles and guns can kill up to three hundred a minute. Yes things have changed in America today, along with the population over 300 million and growing everyday.

No one should have Military weapons with large capacity magazines. They are not big boy toys! They were made for killing people only! Now they are used to kill America's children.

OK I will be nuts! we can look at it this way. the second amendment was writing in 1791 right? The right of the people to bear arms, so it should be the state of the art rifle and gun of 1791.

You left wing anti-gun nuts just don't get it. The 2d Amendment has nothing to do with one's right to hunt. FYI, it is illegal to own military weapons without a special permit from the Federal Government. Only semi-automatic weapons can be purchased by the public, these include pistols, & shotguns. An semi-automatic rifle that looks like a military rifle is no more deadly than a semi-automatic rifle than does not look like a military rifle.

sfcret I'm just curious but if Military style weapons are no more dangerous than any other(a point that I agree with in principal if not actuality BTW) then why do so many Yahoo's choose them to use for nefarious purposes. I mean your basic Militia Yahoo will pass up a 600.00 dollar semi-auto Remington for a 2000.00 dollar Bushmaster any day of the week and twice on Sunday. And Don't feed me none of these its sexy lines either. That style of rifle is designed to be what it is. A more versatile platform for putting out more Firepower more rapidly. And you know that.

sfcret - next time children are mowed down with an assault rifle YOU can tell the parents, friends and family that they JUST DON'T GET IT!

The 2nd amendment was for a time we didn't have the military we have today. If someone needs more than a handgun or a hunting rifle, we need that person to have extraordinary reasons and be able to prove it. Assault weapons are to kill as many people as possible and no one should have those at home.

IR Va - You would have to ask someone that buys the military look alike weapons. However, the military style look alike is not actually the weapon of choice for most murders. I believe if you check handguns kill more people than the semi-automatic weapons you mention. It's not the weapon that is dangerous but the person using it.

SeekingSanity - It is apparent that you do not know the difference between a military assault rifle (can fire semi or automatic) and a rifle with some features of a military assault rifle which can only fire semi-automatic. Just because you and your ilk don't like the weapons and you follow the liberals talking points about gun control doesn't make you right. The Bushmaster used in Conn. IS NOT a military assault rifle, it was legally purchased by the shooters mother who also taught him how to shoot it. If anyone is at fault is was the MOTHER, not the weapon, not the manufacturer and not the person that sold the Mother the weapon. There is nothing in the Constitution or anywhere else that says you HAVE to buy a weapon, it is your choice, but quit trying to take away other peoples rights.

      #11.5 - Sat Feb 2, 2013 8:21 PM EST

sfcret - it is apparent you know nothing about anything - especially about what I KNOW. The Bushmaster is an assault weapon - I never said it was a MILITARY assault weapon. It has nothing to do with whether is was bought by the mother or not. It should NOT have been sold and there is nothing to say anyone should buy it.

Former Supreme Court Justice Stevens said in an article I've posted several times, there is nothing in the 2nd amendment that allows for assault weapons and there is no reason they should be allowed, nor should high capacity magazines.

I am NOT trying to take other people's rights. I have no problem with anyone owning a handgun or hunting rifle - provided they have a background check done; get training; have the gun registered.

YOU have no right to take away anyone's rights by allowing assault weapons and high capacity magazines to be sold. They are NO ONE'S right to own. But, you're so damned eager to kill someone you just can't stand the thought you might not ever be able to. You and people like you who need these weapons are SICK!

Ah yes sfcret being a little bit disingenuous. Of course handguns are the choice for more murders. They are also the weapon of choice for more suicides and several other crimes of convenience. Assault style weapons (and Bushmaster is one of them as you well know) are the overwhelmingly weapon of choice for Mass Shooters in a some what attempt in their fevered mind duplicate a military assault. They are also the weapon of choice for your basic half crazed The Government is doing me wrong crowd. Apples and oranges. You would have us do nothing because you can't do it all at once. I say lets do something about the obvious things that we can and work on the rest of it as we go along.

IR Va - Maybe you should look up the definition of "assault rifle" and where that term originated and then get back to me, since you appear to be stuck with the liberal interpretation. There are some things state governments can do without banning certain weapons. Just like in the Federal 1994 ban, people just modified the rifle (removed bayonet attachment, shortened pistol grip, removed flash suppressors, etc) they will just do the same thing again. Now you say lets do something about the obvious things and work on the rest, just what is it you would do? BTW, google the following "is the bushmaster rifle an assault weapon". Also when you refer to "Bushmaster" you do know that is the name of the company and not the weapon itself. You have not given me anything of substance except YOUR OPINION, which you are entitled to.

I will ask you one final question: Why not let each individual state decide their own policies on gun control, why should people in some states like Wyoming, Idaho, the Dakotas be held to the same rules as those in CA, NY, Ill, & Conn for example? I biggest problem with any Federal gun control, above what is already the law, is the governments "One size fits all".

SeekingSanity - When you post sentences like this one: But, you're so damned eager to kill someone you just can't stand the thought you might not ever be able to. You and people like you who need these weapons are SICK! You are only showing your stupidity. You don't know the first thing about me or what I have done or want to do. Quit spouting the left wing talking points and think for yourself. BTW, I hope you and IR, Va., enjoy the SUPER BOWL.

The reason we are looking at "one size fits all" is that each state having its own rules is creating the problem Can't buy a gun in one state, head to another, or go to a gun show, or buy it on line.

sfcret: why don't you quit treating everyone who does not believe as you do as though they are an enemy to be tromped on. Is there any real reason to be so angry all the time?

Sargent Retired Why don't we just quit sugar coating things. You received the same training that I did so you are well aware of what constitutes a Assault Type of Rifle and what the capabilities of it are. And no I'm not stuck on the "liberal" definition. I'm stuck on trying to come up with a definition that we all can live with. Instead of using your superior knowledge to help our Inexperienced Friends to clarify the situation you are bound and determined to use it to deflect and obscure. SGT. at the end of the day something is going to be done. 85% are demanding it so contrary to your belief something is going to happen. Now me personally I would rather use My knowledge to ensure that something that I can live with happens. You on the other hand seem to be determined that only something to bitch about happens. You Know folks that continually find fault are rarely disappointed and seldom happy. Seems a piss poor way to go thru life to me

Newday - The only reason you and the other liberals want a "one size fits all" is because you think the Federal Government is the answer to everything, you and your ilk won't be happen until the Federal Government controls ALL ASPECTS of our lives. The 1994 gun control act did not work and neither will a new weapons ban work, even VP Biden says so.

BTW, I am not against background checks, I believe no one should sell any type of weapon to a non-resident of the state in which one is trying to purchase a firearm, and I am for proof of a certified weapons training class prior to purchase and a waiting period of at least 15 days. FYI, it is ILLEGAL to sell a firearm on the internet or through the mail. In CA you need a background check to purchase a weapon at a gun show from a licensed dealer.

          #11.11 - Mon Feb 4, 2013 1:21 PM EST

IR Va - Most of the weapons I used and trained with in the military were capable from firing automatic. (except for the M1 rifle that was still the basic weapon when I enlisted). I asked you to check the definition of Assault Weapon, but it is apparent that you only want to use the definition bantered about by the left.

FYI, I have taught firearm safety classes and self defense classes to those interested in the proper use of firearms for self protection, hunting and target shooting. As mentioned above in 11.11, there are several things I think should be done, but banning semi-automatic rifles isn't one of them.

Now instead of the President flying around the country (today in Minnesota) to push his gun control agenda, which isn't going t pass, I would rather see him use his time to work on the economy, jobs, and reducing the deficit.

Oh, BTW, I don't own any of the so called weapons that are being talked about. I have a Winchester 30-30 purchased in 1954, a 12 gauge shotgun and a 9mm pistol.

How about a topic: "Hypocracy In The News"

Here is some info about gun-banner Dianne:

Diane Feinstein should read this actual story from someone who knew the act of arming oneself was crucial to their sense of safety and protection...

"Less than twenty years ago I was the target of a terrorist group. It was the New World Liberation Front. They blew up power stations and put a bomb at my home when my husband was dying of cancer. And the bomb didn't detonate. [...] I was very lucky. But, I thought of what might have happened. Later the same group shot out all the windows of my home. [...] And,[b]I know the sense of helplessness that people feel. I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms. I'd walk to the hospital when my husband was sick. I carried a concealed weapon. I made the determination that if somebody was going to try to take me out, I was going to take them with me."[b]

That someone was none other than Dianne Feinstein herself (circa 1995). Fact!!!!!
