VIDEO: First Read Minute: Senators get the jump on Obama on immigration
NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss the bipartisan efforts taken on comprehensive immigration reform ahead of President Obama's trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.
yes, fiesty, once again they lay down and roll-over. it is time to primary most of these deaf senators and restore the democratic party and the middle class!
All do respect, it's these types of headlines that are a part of the problem with Washington. That proposed frameworks and legislation are pitted at the personal level. If the media continues to portray that the Country demands Washington do things together, it would be nice if the media made headlines like 'Bi-partisan group of Senators agree to framework in support in broad immigration reform'?
We always lose the focus of the cause. It is supposed to be about long overdue, comprehensive immigration reform...not about whether the Senate got the jump on the WH.
It may sound like a small change, but in my mind things like these have profound impact.
Report on what is the news v. what you want the news to be.
Thank you Feisty. I totally Agree with you on McNasty. He and Lindsay Graham never pass up FACE TIME with the Camera to make them seem Important. Are they the only Senators on the Republican Side who have anything to say about anything. John McCain as well as his ME TOO Parrot, Lindsay Graham are trying to make themselves RELEVANT, when all the Both of them do is come out in TANDEM to INSULT someones Intelligence and Integrity, especially if they can tie something to the Obama Administration.
Both of them have shown they LACK BOTH, Intelligence and Integrity in Recent Years. Now that McCain has been retired from Major Committees all he can do is APPEAR on Sunday Talk Shows to look Relevant.
First Read's Headline is also Misleading on this Subject. The Congress should have taken up Immigration years AGO. What they are coming out with on Reform did not take a Bi Partisan Committee. It appears to be a Commonsense Approach. However, I think they SHOULD CLOSE THE ANCHOR BABY LOOPHOLE if Real Immigration Reform Coming.
These Birther Homes are becoming a Problem to let possible people into the Country under just birthing a Baby in this Country for automatic citizenship. The Chinese Problem is problematic as well as other Countries doing the same.
All do respect, it's these types of headlines that are a part of the problem with Washington.
I couldn't agree more Alan.
Rather than everyone being so divisive about this matter we should be giving credit where credit is due.
Most of us have asked for both sides to reach across the aisles to do the right thing for decades. Now that they do so on a very important matter, people come here and chastise the GOP for being outplayed by the president, being RINOS; etc. Who cares? They have done something we wanted. They easily could have stayed their ground and refused to compromise. but they didn't. They did the right thing and I am glad they did.
They have done what we wanted reaching a bipartisan legislative agreement. I for one hope that this is something that both sides will continue to achieve so this country becomes as strong as possible.
Let's just get it done and move on. There are soooo many problems to address - they're working together on this one - great! No one is going to mistake it for anything but what it is - Republicans trying to get votes but hey, no matter. People aren't dumb!
Part of this is wrong. Do not allow illegal's to come in on a work visa. Make people on welfare and unemployment do the work. I know alot don't want to. But if they don't, cut off the welfare and unemployment for not taking a job offered them. That would cut down on federal spending.
Mockingbird - I'm sure they do if you're a Republican! Bud's - most people receiving welfare would jump at the chance for a good paying job. Stop your ignorance and open your eyes. You just look stupid with that post!

You're making a rather broad stroke by saying that people on 'welfare' need to do this work. Many who utilize welfare are hard working, tax paying people. Many of which put in hard labor for little to nothing on the earned income side.
After what the GOP has shown themselves to be publicly and for an extended period of time now I don't think it wise to respond positively to them so quickly. Sure we're all starved of bipartisan cooperation, but once a thing is withheld unreasonabley for such a long period of time and for such obviously disgusting reasons the sudden re-introduction of it is highly suspect. They only seek personal gain in one way or another and that's the LAST thing they deserve.
It would be wiser to check what's in their AMGENother hand than to shake the one that's extended...
Interesting breakdown from Markos on the immigration debate:
As you watch the immigration debate play out over the coming weeks and months, watch how these three groups play out:
The reformers This includes most Democrats and perhaps a handful of Republicans. They want reform on the merits—having an undocumented underclass is bad policy—and on the politics. For Democrats, it's catering to a priority of one of their most important (and growing) constituencies (not just Latinos, but Asians as well), and for Republicans, it's the realization that they won't win another national election (or a personal one) unless they can eat into Latino support for Democrats.
The problem for Republicans in this camp is that their efforts are a long play—Latinos won't be switching their votes by 2016. But their party's future prospects won't improve until Latinos start doing so. Eventually.
The fake reformers These are people who think that they can improve with Latinos by changing their "tone" and pretending to seek reform. These include people like Sen. Marco Rubio, who propose a path to citizenship, but only after the GOP certifies the border as "secure". As you well know, they'll never do that, so that 13 million new, heavily Democratic voters never enter the voter pool. They seek to create a legal limbo, where undocumented immigrants aren't rounded up and deported, but are still denied the rights of citizenship.
The xenophobes The bulk of the GOP considers the fake reformers sellouts, as even the mildest reforms are "reward" for "lawbreakers". They cling to the fantasy of mass deportations and the notion that 1) you can sweep our nation clear of the undocumented, and 2) that our nation could function without that source of cheap labor.
Democrats are mostly united behind genuine reform, though they include a smattering of xenophobes like Montana Sen. Jon Tester. Republicans, on the other hand, are divided between those who want half-measures, hoping it's enough to arrest their decline among Latinos, and the angry white male xenophobes who dominate their grassroots (and the House GOP caucus).
And just what makes all you bright bulbs on the left and right think that these people in the country illegally want a "path to citizenship?" Many just want to work without the threat of being arrested. Many just want to send money home to support their families in the their home countries.
On another topic, I am truly miffed that I can't watch Spanish Language soap operas on Univision because I don't speak Spanish. They should be required by law to close caption them in ENGLISH!
She is from Mesa for gods sake! People who drink the water in that town are all a bit crazy. Ice hockey in the desert? I am a Arizona Native and could never figure why Glendale is subsidizing a losing franchise. Holy Sh*T I,m starting to sound like a republican!!!!
Why would anyone cite an idiot like Markos who is nothing but a deluded uninformed hack with an agenda pretending to be a journalist? Using his "logic" one could speculate that there is truly only one type of Democrat when it comes to this issue. They are open border advocates weak on national security who seek to increase the welfare state in order to secure even more fraudulent votes at elections. If we were all deluded hack idiots such as Markos. But some of us realize that perhaps we are witnessing the first real bipartisan effort on any issue since Obama took office. Of course, the Democratic players are suspect given their history of irrational partisanship and demagoguery but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Why anyone would allow the slime Menendez work on anything is a puzzle. Hopefully, soon, he will be on his way to prison.
Why isn't anyone on the left discussing the FBI investigation of yet another pervert from the left, Senator Bob Menendez? Apparently, the people from New Jersey favor those who support the child sex slave trade. My guess is he didn't just fly illegally down to the Dominican Republic to engage in sex with underage girls and drink alcohol. What else was he up to? Perhaps something else illegal, drugs and weapons maybe? One can only speculate until we get the media's participation into this matter.
GOP need TIPS so as not to sound insensitive. What a surprise.
What counts as "tonally sensitive messaging points"? Some of the tips are obvious -- words like "illegals" and "aliens" are not well received, nor as phrases like "anchor babies."
But this tip was amazing: "Don't characterize all Hispanics as undocumented and all undocumented as Hispanics."
In 2013, it's apparently still necessary for Republicans to receive advice like this. Is it any wonder the party is struggling so badly to win support outside its older white base?
These tips are great! Even children can understand!
Here's another tip for McCain: Pretend like you have another reason for supporting Immigration Reform other than "elections". Some people might actually believe your party cares.
chucky, from what I'm reading across the nets, no one is under any delusion when it comes to the GOP and their means to an end. They were crushed in this past election by the Latino vote. People have long memories and it's going to take more than an immigration bill to change people's minds.
I really believe that when/if this legislation passes, it is going to be a wonderful day in America and I for one, can't wait. It was a long time coming and will be a major achievement for President Obama and this Congress.
And of course the Latino community. How thrilled they must be!
Pat - and make no mistake, this is not just a Latino thing. I know a Polish man who was here illegally then married and got a lawyer to get him through the process of becoming a legal immigrant. Although the vast majority are Latino, it is not only that group!
If anything positive comes of their grovelling it will be a great day for Obama because every latino knows who bent them to their knees in an attempt to look proactive (or even active for that matter)....
I stated my personal belief before... That a 10:1 ratio will be the best the GOP ever does on the latino vote because Latino voters are far more savvy that the current GOP constituency EVER was....
So in an oddly poetic way, some members of the GOP are beginning to court votes for the Democratic party. Reality simply escapes them whenever they try to guage anyone of a different hue. The closest they ever wanted to get to "those people" was to notice how well the yard looked, and they preferred to be away when that happened.
When the chips are down, they'll probably ask that Latino voters dip their fingers in ink at the polls, just to make them feel more welcome.
Exactly how Obama got elected the first time. Thing is his silver tongue hid the fact that he was in it for himself and a legacy yet to come to fruition. ACA and his approval of popping Bin Laden. He has to do something else even though the majority of Americans say BS.
Talk - you only talk nonsense. And, the majority of Americans like this President. Only ones like you say BS but we know it doens't matter what the President does - you'd say BS!
You'd think Republicans would welcome more immigrants from Mexico - the rep is, these folks are often religious, socially conservative, family - oriented and interested in serving in the military. Wouldn't they be naturally inclined to support the Republican Party, (if the Republicans hadn't demonized them to keep white working class voters?)
"You'd think Republicans would welcome more immigrants from Mexico - the rep is, these folks are often religious, socially conservative, family - oriented and interested in serving in the military."
True Amy, they are often ACTUALLY these things... Which immediately puts them at odds with people that REPORT themselves to be these things but rarely are (da GOP)... Contrary to Gopular opinion, these immigrants are not serfs like their existing 'merkin constitchencies.
Talk - you only talk nonsense. And, the majority of Americans like this President. Only ones like you say BS but we know it doens't matter what the President does - you'd say BS!
I like him, as a person. As a leader and a visionary of what needs to be done in the country, not so much.
And by the BS I meant this whole, for the lack of a better term, amnesty thing is what the majority don't want.
There's already statements being made about how AFTER the border is secured, we can move to create realistic immigration reform with an arduous path to citizenship...
"We will sell you the sun tan lotion AFTER the sun goes out."...
"Bring us the Unicorn and we will begin to discuss the possibility of selling you some of the glitter"...
"Find and present us with the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and we will open up a dialog regarding actual citizenship of the Leprechaun found guarding it."...
"Find any substance at all in the empty overtures from the racially decrepit GOP and we will reward you handsomely by allowing you to vote against yourselves in gratitude."
Every vote for the GOP is a knee-jerk response to misunderstood abuse in one way or another.
Listened to Jay Carney on the news this morning and it appears that Obama is already trying to take credit for the bi-partisan agreement between the 8 Senators. So why is the President going to Las Vegas to give a speech on immigration instead of waiting to see what the full Senate will come up with? Maybe he should stay in Washington and work on the economy, jobs and reducing the deficit since those 3 subjects are what the American people care about the most.
One thing I noted in the Senate agreement was that it called for securing the border, that was the same thing Reagan was promised, but it never happened. I would like to see the details on how the border will be secured. Without secured borders this whole immigration issue will again pop up some years down the road.
sfcret - at some point you and your ilk will realize that the President tackles more than one subject at a time. I realize that is WAYYYYYY beyond your comprehension but most of us can do it!
"No one is going to mistake it for anything but what it is - Republicans trying to get votes but hey, no matter. People aren't dumb!" -- Really?? As in when Obama rolled out that Dream Act executive order right before the elections for the illegals? Of COURSE that wasn't pandering to get last minute Latino voters, right? Obama had FOUR years to address concerns about immigration for illegals and then he waits until the 11th hour in a campaign to issue that order? If you believe otherwise, you are deluded... Obama is just upset that a bi-partisan group of senators finally was able to do something that Obama was either unwilling or incapable of doing...
Sfcret... Maybe you should be his girl Friday and help with his itinerary.
Any proposal that first requires the impossible as a caveat (such as securing the 2,000 mile border) is just political posturing for points with no intention of following through...
Just the type of ball you'd expect the GOP to pretend to want to advance.
SeekingSanity - So tell me just what the President is doing about the 3 items I mentioned? I mean he can run around the country talking about immigration and gun control but I don't see him addressing those things that the American people feel are more important.
BTW, I see that the State of Illinois is now going to give a drivers license to undocumented aliens (Illegal), hope that makes you happy.
Chick binder - So you are saying that the 8 Senators really aren't concerned about securing the border, that it is just a ruse? BTW, securing the border is definitely doable.
I now see that FR has reported the President is NOW embracing the proposed agreement between the bi-partisan Senators. Maybe if President Obama stays out of the discussion throughout the Congressional process there can be some kind of bill passed. The President will have his chance to add his touch to the bill when/if he signs it into law. BTW, why is the President still going to give his speech in Las Vegas, I think he only wanted a trip to Vegas, maybe put a wager on the Super Bowl? Hope the President is smart enough to pick the 49ers.
God help Illinois...California is toying with that idiotic notion as well. In fact, Los Angeles now has two standards when dealing with people having their cars impounded for lack of a drivers license. To us regular tax paying citizens, we would have our car impounded for a minimum of 30 days, pay the usual high fees, but for the ILLEGALS, they wouldn't have their cars immediately impounded because it's felt that its too much of a hardship for those poor folks to not have their car (forget the fact that they don't have a license) for 30 days and well, you know, it's just too darn expensive for them to come up with the fines. Of course now the police are being sued over the implementation of this directive, so hopefully sanity will be restored. Just goes to show the insanity of the liberal left...
I'm not sure even tho the 49er's are favored, that the Ravens will squeak one out...not that I wouldn't want a Cali team to win... :)
sfcret---is there anything the President could do that you would approve of? If so, please share with us. If not, why do you care what he does with his time and energy?
Steeler Fan - sfcret and JK1963 are both haters and President Obama can do NOTHING that they will like - even if they were for it before. It's sad, really!
No..what really is the most sad is that you can't admit that Obama is as much of a panderer to the latino vote as the GOP... The only reason you can't admit it is because of your love-fest for the guy...it's sad...really!
And for the record, I'm all for this proposal. As long as the illegals pay what the legal immigrants have paid in lawyer and immigration fees to become a citizen and go to the back of the line, then I'm all for giving them a pathway to citizenship. I know from experience, since my girlfriend is one such a person that is here in this country on an H1 visa. Since coming in 2007, she has shelled out nearly $15k in lawyer and immigration fees to then WAIT for the CHANCE that her application will be approved for permanent status. So yes, if every illegal is willing to pay what she has paid, upfront, and then wait for their turn in the immigration line, then I'm all for it. Now do you have a problem with it?
Please describe this "doable" securing of the border that you're so definite about... Also a cost and time estimate would be nice... You can work on it in-between your bitching about Obama not working hard enough on your economy and your deficit...
You must watch too much TV... You should spend more time outdoors, maybe fencing the middle of rivers or flood-prone ravines in the wilderness and maintaining it all since you're out there on guard duty 24/7...
...And the best intentions of any immigration legislation can be destroyed by the simple demand that you do this first... What I'm saying is you can always count on the GOP to block progress and pretend they're not. They love blocking their own ideas as soon as anyone of any other color might benefit from them... Any idiot that hasn't learned that is no learner at all.
SeekingSanity - I don't hate the President, I just don't agree with the majority of his so called policies. There are a lot of things that the President can do that I would/could support. Example, stay in Washington and be a LEADER instead of being divisive. President Obama is not the first, nor will he be the last, that has to work with members of the opposite party controlling Congress or half of the Congress. I want to see movement on reducing the deficit and movement on the job front. I would like to see the President work more with Congress instead of being demanding, whining, and playing the blame game. I believe the President has to learn to lead and that means compromising.
Some senior Democratic members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus used a private White House meeting Friday to urge President Obama not to unveil his own immigration legislation, for fear of blowing up delicate bipartisan talks, Democratic sources tell CNN.
This is significant for several reasons.
First, because the White House has been telling senators and advocates that they are writing their own immigration bill, in legislative language. It is incredibly rare for the White House to write its own bill.
Second – Democrats urging the president not to release a bill illustrates how polarizing the immigration issue remains – especially for Republicans who fear that signing onto any legislation that could be seen as authored by the president could invite primary challenges for Republicans.
How do eight senators beat President Obama on immagration, when he had it on record at least a week ago? Hmmm? I think i smell a ratpublican conspiricy? Anything to get votes, thats the Rethug way! Ratpublicant's don't give two @!$%#s about immagration!!! The only thing they care about here, as McNasty has said, is VOTES!!!
Securing the border? If they wanted to secure the border, it would have been done when Raygun was in office! No, just another ploy by the RePissnMoanlicans!!!!
That would have been a little Awkward for Ronnie... "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!!!"... And in as big a pieces as you can manage because we have a new use for it! We'll give you a buck a foot!
……denouncing the bipartisan bill now before Congress and pledging a one-man show of force — if need be — to beat back amnesty and Republican-In-Name-Only compromises.
(Washington Times, Jan 29, 2013)
Wow!!
A Typical Republican Conservative response….
(A call to); hey, we should move even farther “To-the-Right”.
In my lifetime haven't we already had 2 amnesties and I bet here we go again. You have to stop people from coming in illegally first or we will repeat this over and over. The only reason illegal traffic has slowed down is because their are no jobs.
There once was a "Bracero Program" that seemed to work OK until people started complaining that the workers were taking jobs away and citizens had to go on welfare because the guest workers where taking jobs they could do ( laborer jobs). So that program was done away with. Unless they put quotas on immigration the same thing will happen, if you don't have jobs how many immigrants can you allow in. Unlimited numbers? Immigrants are a good thing (my family were immigrants) but you have to have controls also. I don't care if it's Democrats or GOP the plan needs to be a really good one or it will happen again and again.
As pointed out under First Thoughts, it not called the Kabuki dance for nuttin ya know! lol
Schumer did everything but drop to his knees and blow John McNasty yesterday for the cameras!
All the praise & sweetness heaped upon the serial flip-flopper was enough to send you into a diabetic coma!
yes, fiesty, once again they lay down and roll-over. it is time to primary most of these deaf senators and restore the democratic party and the middle class!
Feisty: If McNasty wants to intercept the ball and run it into our goal, let him.

who thel hell takes McCain seriously anymore? He's like the crazy uncle you see at family gatherings but don't want to talk to or be seen with.
Thanks Seeking!
I'll check it out but am having some technical issues with my e-mail account the last couple of days! ;o(
Bayllie,
Couldn't agree more! He reminds me of the uncle who after having a few too many keeps trying to pull you on his lap to rub your shoulders... ;o)
President Obama has had a blueprint for Immigration (29 pages) on-line for quite a long time.
See www.whitehouse.gov
Although the President surely appreciates their work in this area:
How does that constitute Senators "getting a jump" on him on Immigration???
How the f uc k do we have a comprehensive bipartisan immigration reform bill the week after inauguration?
I didn't have a chance to listen to Rubio visiting Rush Limbaugh, and talking about Immigration. I bet that was entertaining.
Mockingbyrd - easy. The Republicans saw the writing on the wall and knew it was time to move off their collective a**es!

Perfectly stated Domenico & Mark.
To think - Republican and Democratic Senators beating President Obama to the podium in order to talk about a bill they want to pass - TOGETHER.
it's called "leading from behind." President Obama can be kind of sneaky that way, getting Republicans to do what he wants them to.

The question is;
What will happen when the constituency and the punditrocracy on both sides weigh in?
Will the left attack the proposal for not going far enough while the right attacks it for going too far?
Will Senator Rubio do the "McCain double flip", if his polling dictates?
How much distance is there between what is proposed and what is realistically attainable?
Sorry...
Let attempt an answer ....
One side is a conundrum, the other an enigma. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to which is which?
RINOs, RINOs everywhere! 2013 should prove to be the 'Year of the Big Snit' for GOP purists, aka NJs on this board.
Don't ask my to trust Cristy. ☺
really, a jump over the president?
do not trust republicans, never, ever!

Seeking, does that mean the Polish vote will help the GOP?
Pat - amazingly he is more Republican. And of course, put Latinos down who aren't here legally! I KNOW!!!!
Seeking, I was just joking w/you about the Polish vote.
But yeah, it is interesting that he is more Republican.
McTraitor supported this amnesty nonsense back in 2007 also. And Rubio reveals himself to be nothing but a self serving opportunist.

Hope the President is smart enough to pick the 49ers.
sfcret,
God help Illinois...California is toying with that idiotic notion as well.
Now do you have a problem with it?
sfcret
"BTW, securing the border is definitely doable."
And yet here he is, why? Here comes the wrench.
Right...and like Obama wasn't pandering to Latinos right before the election...
Limbaugh Vows Fight on Immigration.
