First Thoughts: Obama to embrace Senate deal

Obama expected to embrace Senate deal… The reason Obama is headed to Las Vegas: No state has better epitomized the power of the Latino vote… The Kabuki dance… On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base… On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker… And Senate is set to confirm John Kerry as secretary of state.

*** Obama to embrace Senate deal: When President Obama delivers his immigration speech at 2:55 pm ET today in Las Vegas, he will hug the principles that the bipartisan group of senators outlined yesterday. “POTUS will applaud the bipartisan Senate agreement that is very consistent with his long-held view and lay out his vision for immigration reform,” top White House aide Dan Pfeiffer just tweeted. Obama also will call on the Senate to act on the legislation soon. While one publication is reporting that the White House has developed its own immigration-reform plan that’s more liberal than the bipartisan Senate outline, that information is outdated. Had the bipartisan senators NOT acted yesterday, you likely would have seen Obama offer his own plan. But the senators did act, and their plan is the plan. The last thing the White House wants to do is blow up this fragile coalition. As we reported yesterday, the White House floated the idea of doing a more liberal or progressive bill during a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week, as a counter to what was being offered in the Senate, and the CHC shot the idea down. The CHC’s advice to the White House was let the Senate work its will – at least for now. That said, the White House insisted last night to reporters that if the Senate coalition falters and if bill shows signs of dying, the president will step in with his own legislation.

President Barack Obama speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House, Jan. 24, 2013.

*** Vegas, baby: So why is the president giving his speech in Las Vegas? There is no state that better epitomizes the power of the Latino vote in American politics than Nevada. In 2010, Harry Reid won 69% of Latinos in his race against Sharron Angle, according to the exit polls, saving his Senate seat from a GOP that was convinced was theirs for the taking. And two years later, Obama won 71% of that vote -- matching what he received nationwide. The three states that have moved the most dramatically in presidential contests since 2004 have been Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, and it’s due primarily to the Latino vote in all three states. (New Mexico is not even remotely a purple state anymore.) In Nevada, in particular, Latinos make up 27% of the state’s population and 19% of the voters in the 2012 election. Translation: The Latino influence in the state has even more room to grow.

*** Kabuki dance: While Obama will embrace the bipartisan Senate framework today, one Republican senator who’s part of the deal -- Sen. Lindsey Graham -- was criticizing Obama on FOX last night. “In 2008, he promised comprehensive immigration reform in the first year of his presidency, and it took all the oxygen out of the room,” Graham said. More: “In 2007, when we were trying to do immigration reform, he folded like a cheap suit because labor, the AFL-CIO, got mad at the bill to allow temporary workers... So I don't need a lecture from Barack Obama about bipartisanship; he was never very good at it in the Senate.” Moreover, top Marco Rubio staffers last night tweeted that Obama was “to oppose security and enforcement triggers,” even though the article that was cited never explicitly said that; it simply said Obama “does not favor linking legal status to border security.” So what’s going on here? This is all Kabuki theater to show that these Republicans aren’t in bed with the White House. The best way some Republicans privately believe they have to get more folks on board (or at least to convince some groups not to be overly aggressive AGAINST this plan) is to not look like they are “giving” the president a “win.” Politico also makes this point: “Whether he likes it or not, the president’s top legislative priority rests in the hands of McCain, his former 2008 rival, and Rubio, one of the GOP’s leading candidates to take back the White House in 2016.”

*** On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base: That said, this is an important test for Marco Rubio. He has spent the last several days selling comprehensive immigration to conservatives. And today, he speaks with Rush Limbaugh, who has criticized the bipartisan Senate framework. (“This immigration bill that everybody’s touting on TV is essentially the Bush immigration bill that was beat back in 2007,” Limbaugh said yesterday.) One of Ronald Reagan’s great talents was selling compromise to his party -- and declaring victory. Can Rubio pull this off, especially on an issue that base conservatives have opposed in the past two presidential elections? Rubio’s job with Limbaugh isn’t to convince him to sign on; we’re not sure that’s possible. What Rubio’s goal is today is to convince Limbaugh not to aggressively be AGAINST what he’s doing. If he can pull this off, it will be quite the feather in his hat as we get closer and closer to 2016 -- and perhaps show Rubio has some Reagan-like political skills.

*** On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker: For those who closely follow American politics, Chuck Schumer is an easy target to mock. The running joke, for years, has been that the most dangerous place in DC is to be between Schumer and a TV camera. Perhaps lost in this caricature, however, is that Schumer has become the Democrats’ mover and shaker on key legislation -- dare we say the most effective dealmaker on the Democratic side of the aisle right now. On immigration, he’s reaching across the aisle to work with John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio. And on guns, the legislation that has the best chance of passage is Schumer’s (on universal background checks) where he just might MIGHT convince Republican Tom Coburn to come on aboard his bill. What made Ted Kennedy a lion of the Senate was that he had influence with his Democratic colleagues (if he was backing something, they had cover to get on board) but also the ability to reach across the aisle. And so it’s worth asking: Is Chuck Schumer the closest thing to that right now? And we haven’t even touched on how relentless (and effective) Schumer has been the Senate Democrats’ de facto political director. Is there anyone better at candidate recruiting and clearly primary fields right now than Schumer?

*** Senate set to confirm Kerry: In non-immigration news, U.S. Senate today is expected to vote on John Kerry’s nomination to be secretary of state, and he’s a sure bet to win an easy confirmation. As one of us reported yesterday, if Kerry is confirmed and if his letter of resignation is received tomorrow, Massachusetts will set the special general election for June 25 -- with the primaries to take place on April 30. Also, Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is expected to announce his pick of an interim senator to fill the seat until the special election.

How?

    #54.1 - Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:45 AM EST

stone, "how?", simple, it doesn't solve the problem. They will just keep coming unless we secure the border and get rid of the loop hole allowing illegals to come here , have a baby and now we have to support her and her baby. End that along with the fact that there are few jobs, they will not come.

Read the bill from the Republicans and Democrats I will say I like the Republicans version a lot better. They have family they will be allowed to bring them into the country and we have to support them while Americans go hungry and homeless. What sense does that make.

Illegal crossings are at a forty year low. The proposal calls for additional border controls. Much of the problem is because businesses hired illegals to get around minimum wage laws. Employee verification is also part of the proposal. We're not going to deport 11 million people. Time to get them registered and then put the non-felons on a path to citizenship and send the felons home.

The status quo is no longer acceptable and you may be sure Republicans have canvassed the opinions of U.S. citizens who are of Hispanic origin and have found that their Party's opposition to an Immigration solution is costing them elections.

joe, I'd say you're the one in denial. Why do they come here? Because they can get jobs, that's why. You want to know who gives jobs to undocumented workers? Mitt Romney, for one; http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/10/romney-explains-record-of-hiring-illegal-immigrants-as-lawn-keepers/

      Here's another, a McDonald's franchisee; http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2012/dec/04/federal-government-cracks-down-hiring-illegal-immi/

700 were arrested in Postville, IA a few years ago. Eventually officers of the company were convicted of conspiracy to supply illegals with legitimate-appearing documents; http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-05-12-iowa-immigration_N.htm

And several dozen more at Chuy's restaurants in AZ and CA; http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/30/us/politics/30raid.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

There are just some of the names. How many more are employing undocumented workers but haven't been caught?

Why do they do it? Because it's CHEAPER, that's why. In the eyes of these businesses its just one more way to drive down the cost of labor. Without a willingness on the part of these bussinesses to hire illegally there's no market for labor, and no reason to come here illegally.

How about Tyson Foods? Wal-Mart? Most, however, are hired by hotels, restaurants, and small businesses.

Stone - Many republicans have tried to propose immigration reforms. Quit lying like the republican party is anti-immigrant. That is just a lie. It's not the Republican party who created a lack of hispanic votes, it was a democratic re-elect who granted them free gifts and the chance to stay illegally.

stone6, we have borders other than MEXICO. Even then, the number of illegal aliens entering from Mexico equals the number leaving the US (but the latter includes US born kids of illegal aliens so is really not a fair comparison). And the low number is due mainly to the inability of illegal aliens to get jobs here. Offer an amnesty, and they'll be here before the ink is dry. After all, "enforcement" of the border wouldn't take place until AFTER illegal aliens had gotten temporary visas and that gives more plenty of time to sneak in.

As I mentioned before, about 40% of illegal aliens come on visas they overstay. US VISIT is supposed to prevent that, but it doesn't work. More than ten years and a billion dollars and it doesn't work. And then there's eVerify, which is already working, but this bill includes a "new" system which would take years to develop and implement if it ever was. And in the meantime, more illegal aliens are coming and Obama won't be deporting them, either.

Our own weak policies are allowing this country to be inundated by freebee seeking degenerates. It makes you wonder, why did they come here illegally? Can they not, for some reason, get here legally? Are they criminals? Are they diseased? Are they violent? Do they not have any skills or education? OF course they're coming here because they can't get here legally. We're attracting the worst kind of people here to steal our jobs.

How about we get all of these illegals out of the workforce, and replace them with people who are on welfare. You get these illegals off the job they're on illegally, then you present people on welfare and unemployment with a whole package of jobs available for their choosing. The people on welfare have the option to take one of the jobs in the package, or have their welfare cut off within a certain amount of time.

We get illegals out of our jobs, and we get people off welfare, we show these welfare repients how to work and learn a skill. Most importantly of all, we give the welfare recipients some initiaitive, pride, and sense of vision for their lives. What a huge WIN/WIN for all!

No citizenship for illegal immigrants.....Everyone knows that the border will never be secured the way it should. Hell, Napalitano said it is already secure. Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million illegals and the promise to secure the border was unfullfilled. There is no reason to afford lawbreakers citizenship. How about the cost of Obamacare when this occurs. Add another trillionb to the costs. We have lost this country. Defeat Rubio, McCain, Graham, and the other RINOs.

Most people who make the difficult choice of leaving their country, family and friends without any chance of returning, usually do it to avoid being murdered, raped or worse.

This isn't even a new idea. McCain wrote it in 2007, hated it in 2008, now he's back on board with his own legislation. That's right, John McCain....REPUBLICAN LEGISLATION.

So please stop the spin and stop calling this "reform" it is amnesty.

They are not changing the procedure for those in other countries to come here.

They are granting AMNESTY to those who are already here ILLEGALLY.

Now there is no logistical way the illegals of LA, or Phx or El Paso could be deported there are way too many and you would have violence and rioting it would be like a mini wars throughout the SW.

Now is it right that millions of individuals that saw BREAKING THE LAW as a legitimate means to an end be rewarded?

And what will that individual's outlook towards future laws be?

Compound the issue even further with this tidbit:

My son is Mexican American he moved out of state he must live and work there for 1 year before he can attend the university at the in state tuition rate. Any illegal from Hermosillo, Mexico etc etc will be receiving in state tuition.

                            who is the dreamer now?

This is one of the basic problems with our nation

"We reward those that side step or break the law.

And when we do that those that do put forth the effort to do things the RIGHT way they are made to appear and feel to have wasted their time and efforts as fools.

Thank You!!!!! People just do not get it!!!!! Too many people think this is a prejudice deal and it is so an illegal, breaking the law deal!!!!!!! You follow ALL the rules and you get slapped in the face. You break all the rules and they want to welcome you with open arms. It is all wrong on too many levels!!!!!!

That's not true. You are exaggerating over one issue, because you disagree with a proposal that isn't even law at the moment.

you both remind me of the time I watched White Chris Mathews try and tell a Black man he did not understand the "African American" experience.

wow I am a First Generation son of LEGAL immigrants to this country I have felt the prejudice myself from BOTH peoples, I have lived within 40 minutes of the border with Mexico for 30 years and you guys honestly think you understand the issue better than me.

Where did you all gain this insight,

in college or from a "talking point/sound bite"?

Here is something to really rock your worlds---

Maybe if Mexican citizens had been allowed the "Right to Bare Arms" Mexico would not be governed by Warlords and Corrupt Bureaucrats for centuries and they would not have had to immigrate here legally and illegally in the first place.

                                    where do you live?

                                    Wisconsin? Michigan? Virgina? Alabama? Idaho?

you may be able to there but along the border from California (illegals love Cali so many liberals to care for them) to Texas you will have war on your hands,

And since the Obama administration has decided to surrender huge tracks of the border to the Mexican cartels they may have something to say about it as well.

No one truly realizes how F'ed up this is.

Victor - maybe if Mexico had won the Battle of San Jacinto, you'd still be living in Mexico? You think those people are violating our borders in order to exploit U.S. businesses?

Obama received 70% of the Hisspanic vote...you think that was because of his strong support for the Second Amendment?

You have only further proved my point

You as a gringo liberal feel the need to look after and care for all us poor blacks and browns living in America. After all we are not capable of fending or providing for ourselves. It takes a white person who understands our plight to make sure we are housed and fed and kept on the plantation or in the lettuce fields.

No progressive --- liberals who feel they know what is better for others whether it is a soda bigger than 16oz or the ability to protect themselves

that is who is exploiting us

not the EVIL CAPITALISTS that run Tyson's Chicken.

You are the reason people wear I heart Gringos T-shirts

Yet you really have no idea you are being mocked

and the reason "these people" are immigrating illegally is because here are are no consequences only benefits to doing so.

You're writing nonsense. People who knowingly hire illegals for beneath minimum wage are breaking the law just as assuredly as those whom they are exploiting.

And, you aren't facing the reality of 70% of the Hispanic vote going for Obama. If you are a Hispanic, who voted for Romney, you are in the minority.

My "duty" as a U.S. citizen is to support policies, which I believe, will lead to the strength of the country over the long haul. Part of that includes a process to make the illegals legal and make them part of "legal economy," being paid at legal levels and contributing to the tax base.

                                            Now

                                            I am writing nonsense

first I did not understand the issue.

Latino, 1st generation live along the border 30+ years etc etc

In the same fashion that "racial identity" held 98% of the Black vote for Obama despite nearly 38% unemployment for Black males between the ages of 18-25 you will see a Latino President from the Republican Party Senator Marco Rubio be elected in 2016. That is why this is so bipartisan.

It is all part of the shell game and PROGRESSIVES and LIBERALS are the useful idiots that Lenin spoke of.

I know enough about Hispanic politics to understand that the nomination of a candidate with Cuban heritage does not necessarily guarantee him the support of the entire Hispanic community.

And, I also understand that the Texas border is not reflective of national demographics.

Let me guess. You're a small businessman, who hires illegals?

I have worked along side them many times.

Let me ask you one simple question what state do you live in?

Relevance? I was born in Texas and lived - on and off - 20 years therein. I have lived in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Iowa, Washington, California and Utah...plus 12 years in Europe.

I have close Hispanic friends and have, on occasion, worked side-by-side with them...from board rooms to carrying sheet rock for them in commercial construction.

A Bilble belt city with a church on practically every corner, should be the perfect place right? One problem this man was a 21 yr UNION MEMBER, had over 120rs college credit, an Associate Degree in HVAC, over 25 yrs industrial work experience operating multi-million dollar production lines. You would think this man should have no trouble starting that new family would you?

Well Evansville, INDIANA DISCRIMINATES against DEMOCRATS. Regardless of how skilled, educated, and qualified they are. The only work given this man in 2004 when he moved to this redneck city was part time work stocking bread at a local Walmart Supercenter, he had to work two part jobs, the second delivering meals on wheels to senior citizens. When an opening in the kitchen came up as dishwasher he took it becasue it overed 35hrs a week still no health ins, or paid holidays as it was still considered a part job.

He applied for work with every HVAC contractor in the city being a licensed HVAC tech with an Associate Degree in the field. Not a single interview. He was forced to do this work from 2004-2007 before the recession. Proof positive of the DISCRIMINATION OF DEMOCRATS.

He applied to Whirlpool appliance factory the first month he moved here, along with several other factories in town. Yet was forced to continue to washdishes for two years, only work given.

This is how EVANSVIILLE, INDIANA treats skilled, qualified, college graduates. Not just any college graduate, This one graduated with honors making the National Deans List in 1999. Was awarded an academic scholarship to S.I.U. and attended full time two years at this school under the FAA AIRFRAME AND POWERPLANT program aiming to become an airline mechanic.

Never landing a permanet job until Oct. 2009 when a CANADIAN employer finally hired him as a parts inspector at the local Toyota assemble plant in Princeton.

This man is still divorced, and still has not started that second family. Seems Evansville's redneck women aren't interested in DEMOCRATS that have been forced to wash dishes for a living.

So much for family values in the heart of the Bible Belt. Don't expect to see me getting endocrtinated anytime soon from the bully pulpit on those Sunday mornings either. They love their babies, proclaim to be prolife, but totally blew it when it came to this man looking to marry and start that second family. Why did they blow it?

Because they DISCRIMINATE AGAINST SKILLED, QUALIFIED, DEMOCRATS IN THE WORKPLACE WHEN THEY APPLY FOR JOBS, THATS HOW AND WHY THEY BLEW IT!!!!!

Since this was allowed, the people that came to this country are de-facto legal. They were needed and wanted and basically allowed into the country.

They are here illegally, it really is that plain and simple. They are ILLEGAL. People from across this world work long and hard to come to America the legal way. A friend of mine from Ecuador spent 7 long years getting here. He learned english, bided his time, did it properly and took the oath. He does not consider himself Ecuadorian-American, he is simply American, and proud to be.

Do you really want to document these folks? Then photograph them, fingerprint them, DNA them and deport them. Again, they are here illegally. Let them do it the proper way, the way our relatives have done it for decades. There are 10-12 million people unemployed, its hogwash to believe that Americans wont do the jobs the illegals are doing. They cant because employers pay the salaries under the table and dont pay the proper taxes. Reform is NOT necessary, nor is it the answer. Enforce the laws that are already in place, but enforce them properly.

                                                                                    Reply#75 - Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:02 AM EST

ALL three of my kids paid out of state tuition to go to colleges in a state that neither I nor their dad had spent years paying both income taxes and property taxes to, yet ILLEGALS are going to be handed "in state" tuition wherever they happen to be, despite the fact that MOST of their parents have NOT paid into the tax coffers of that state.

And Fru--I grew up in a small (20K) town in Central MO, which for 7-8 years, has been SWAMPED with the children of illegals (some of those kids are ANCHORS, who are citizens) and I can GUARANTEE you that MOST of those kids and ALL of their parents do NOT speak English, much LESS 'fairly good English'.

We have nearly 1 out of SIX students in our school district that the STATE Dept of Education classifies as NOT speaking English. And that is costing us $6.5 MILLION dollars a year.

As the friend of a READING specialist who suddenly has no TIME for American kids who have actual READING problems, because she is spending every bit of her time teaching kids not just ENGLISH, but their alphabet and numbers, I have WATCHED her go through a kind of depression the first of August for the last several years, KNOWING that many of the kids she had LAST year will be back having 'forgotten' most of what she worked SO hard the previous year to teach them. And that is because when they go home, they do NOT hear the English language spoken, not by their parents, not by their neighbors, and not on TV.

                                                                                            • 3 votes
