First Thoughts: Obama to embrace Senate deal

Obama expected to embrace Senate deal… The reason Obama is headed to Las Vegas: No state has better epitomized the power of the Latino vote… The Kabuki dance… On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base… On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker… And Senate is set to confirm John Kerry as secretary of state.

*** Obama to embrace Senate deal: When President Obama delivers his immigration speech at 2:55 pm ET today in Las Vegas, he will hug the principles that the bipartisan group of senators outlined yesterday. “POTUS will applaud the bipartisan Senate agreement that is very consistent with his long-held view and lay out his vision for immigration reform,” top White House aide Dan Pfeiffer just tweeted. Obama also will call on the Senate to act on the legislation soon. While one publication is reporting that the White House has developed its own immigration-reform plan that’s more liberal than the bipartisan Senate outline, that information is outdated. Had the bipartisan senators NOT acted yesterday, you likely would have seen Obama offer his own plan. But the senators did act, and their plan is the plan. The last thing the White House wants to do is blow up this fragile coalition. As we reported yesterday, the White House floated the idea of doing a more liberal or progressive bill during a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week, as a counter to what was being offered in the Senate, and the CHC shot the idea down. The CHC’s advice to the White House was let the Senate work its will – at least for now. That said, the White House insisted last night to reporters that if the Senate coalition falters and if bill shows signs of dying, the president will step in with his own legislation.

Larry Downing / Reuters

President Barack Obama speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House, Jan. 24, 2013.

*** Vegas, baby: So why is the president giving his speech in Las Vegas? There is no state that better epitomizes the power of the Latino vote in American politics than Nevada. In 2010, Harry Reid won 69% of Latinos in his race against Sharron Angle, according to the exit polls, saving his Senate seat from a GOP that was convinced was theirs for the taking. And two years later, Obama won 71% of that vote -- matching what he received nationwide. The three states that have moved the most dramatically in presidential contests since 2004 have been Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, and it’s due primarily to the Latino vote in all three states. (New Mexico is not even remotely a purple state anymore.) In Nevada, in particular, Latinos make up 27% of the state’s population and 19% of the voters in the 2012 election. Translation: The Latino influence in the state has even more room to grow.

*** Kabuki dance: While Obama will embrace the bipartisan Senate framework today, one Republican senator who’s part of the deal -- Sen. Lindsey Graham -- was criticizing Obama on FOX last night. “In 2008, he promised comprehensive immigration reform in the first year of his presidency, and it took all the oxygen out of the room,” Graham said. More: “In 2007, when we were trying to do immigration reform, he folded like a cheap suit because labor, the AFL-CIO, got mad at the bill to allow temporary workers... So I don't need a lecture from Barack Obama about bipartisanship; he was never very good at it in the Senate.” Moreover, top Marco Rubio staffers last night tweeted that Obama was “to oppose security and enforcement triggers,” even though the article that was cited never explicitly said that; it simply said Obama “does not favor linking legal status to border security.” So what’s going on here? This is all Kabuki theater to show that these Republicans aren’t in bed with the White House. The best way some Republicans privately believe they have to get more folks on board (or at least to convince some groups not to be overly aggressive AGAINST this plan) is to not look like they are “giving” the president a “win.” Politico also makes this point: “Whether he likes it or not, the president’s top legislative priority rests in the hands of McCain, his former 2008 rival, and Rubio, one of the GOP’s leading candidates to take back the White House in 2016.”

*** On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base: That said, this is an important test for Marco Rubio. He has spent the last several days selling comprehensive immigration to conservatives. And today, he speaks with Rush Limbaugh, who has criticized the bipartisan Senate framework. (“This immigration bill that everybody’s touting on TV is essentially the Bush immigration bill that was beat back in 2007,” Limbaugh said yesterday.) One of Ronald Reagan’s great talents was selling compromise to his party -- and declaring victory. Can Rubio pull this off, especially on an issue that base conservatives have opposed in the past two presidential elections? Rubio’s job with Limbaugh isn’t to convince him to sign on; we’re not sure that’s possible. What Rubio’s goal is today is to convince Limbaugh not to aggressively be AGAINST what he’s doing. If he can pull this off, it will be quite the feather in his hat as we get closer and closer to 2016 -- and perhaps show Rubio has some Reagan-like political skills.

*** On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker: For those who closely follow American politics, Chuck Schumer is an easy target to mock. The running joke, for years, has been that the most dangerous place in DC is to be between Schumer and a TV camera. Perhaps lost in this caricature, however, is that Schumer has become the Democrats’ mover and shaker on key legislation -- dare we say the most effective dealmaker on the Democratic side of the aisle right now. On immigration, he’s reaching across the aisle to work with John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio. And on guns, the legislation that has the best chance of passage is Schumer’s (on universal background checks) where he just might MIGHT convince Republican Tom Coburn to come on aboard his bill. What made Ted Kennedy a lion of the Senate was that he had influence with his Democratic colleagues (if he was backing something, they had cover to get on board) but also the ability to reach across the aisle. And so it’s worth asking: Is Chuck Schumer the closest thing to that right now? And we haven’t even touched on how relentless (and effective) Schumer has been the Senate Democrats’ de facto political director. Is there anyone better at candidate recruiting and clearly primary fields right now than Schumer?

*** Senate set to confirm Kerry: In non-immigration news, U.S. Senate today is expected to vote on John Kerry’s nomination to be secretary of state, and he’s a sure bet to win an easy confirmation. As one of us reported yesterday, if Kerry is confirmed and if his letter of resignation is received tomorrow, Massachusetts will set the special general election for June 25 -- with the primaries to take place on April 30. Also, Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is expected to announce his pick of an interim senator to fill the seat until the special election.

I t seems to me when Romney and Obama were campaigning they said jobs, jobs, jobs, I guess that's out the window, lets put another 11 million people on the tax tag of the working so once again the working man in America can be punished some more for working why would anyone want to get a job when the check and free health care comes in the mail box, wake up people get these people out of there, kiss my but federal government liars, and gun control? Look at Chicago some of the strongest gun laws in the country, see how that is working out for them.

Again most mass murders and serial killers are WHITE AMERICAN MALES..

BTW The original inhabitants of the U.S. were the Native American Indian as well as the Mexican Indians and Central American Indians until the MURDEROUS COLONISTS CAME...

And just because people want to live somewhere does not mean they want to lose their identity (Americans live in other countries) and keep their citizenship in America! and are still Americans!

come out of the dark ages...women even keep their maiden names when they marry sometimes... imagine that...ooooh

    E. Reyes, indeed, most serial killers are White males, for the simple reason that there are several times the number of White males in the country as Black, Asian, or Hispanic. And of course, the FBI doesn't track crime statistics for "Hispanic" perpetrators, only Hispanic victims, so we really don't know how many of them their are. However, following the White Male serial killer meme is what got several people killed here in DC a few years ago--and the killers were two, Black guys, one an illegal alien. The Black chief of police didn't want to believe witness statements that the killers could be two guys of color. Then, there's Juan Corona. Not to mention the Railroad killer (Hispanic illegal alien). The murderer of Chandra Levy was an Hispanic illegal alien who raped and possibly murdered others. And if we look at simple mass murders, we have the Hispanic illegal alien who murdered the Bologna family, the Hispanic illegal aliens who murdered 3 Black college students in NJ, and the Asian immigrant student who murdered 23 people at Virginia Tech. Not to mention, the Arab immigrant shooter who killed several people at Ft. Hood.

      E. Reyes, women do indeed keep their birth names, but do they keep sleeping with their exes? That's a better example of what dual citizenship is. And I wonder if you'd be so sanguine about your partner having an occasional sexual interlude with his or her exes.

Indians are no more native to this continent than we are. They were early Siberian immigrants.

The majority of US citizens want the border secure first then you can start talking about what to do with the status of 11 million illegal aliens second. This is another glaring example of Washington, both Democrats and Republicans, not listening to the will of legal citizens again.

The usual suspects are once again trying to pass the Dream Act part two. Insanity.

You can really say the "usual suspects" and mean it, in the case of amnesty. Several of them pushed the 1986 amnesty with the promise that it would be the only one because our laws would be enforced. Our laws weren't enforced and aren't being enforced, and now the SAME guys such as Schumer and Graham are back peddling more snake oil. This time, apparently, illegal aliens would immediately get a "temporary" legal status, i.e. amnesty, but they wouldn't get full citizenship until after our borders were "secure" as determined by some commission. So much wrong with this--illeggal aliens would AGAIN get amnesty without enforcement already being in place, meaning that millions more illegal aliens could come in and commit fraud to get it. We already have eVerify, but now we're told we need a "new" system, not yet developed. We also have US VISIT to track visa overstays, but that doesn't work. And of course, the border fence hasn't been built. Yet, we can bet the only "commission" would look at the southern border, not the other enforcement measures, and base a decision on that. And we sure can't trust ANY data to come out of the White House. It's already lying about "record" deportations when it's including numbers in there that are NOT deportations.

Or maybe you could read the proposal that the senate has made. Your comment is a glaring example of the uneducated and uninformed pissing and moaning when they have no clue what is in the senate's bill.

As far as illegal aliens go, the politicians don't care about them, it's only to get votes, both sides. They are criminals.

As for the gun stuff, if they are so bad, why is the government buying all this hollow-point ammo? It's to shoot law abiding citizens that want to protect OUR country. You anti gun idiots will be in the same FEMA camps as the rest of us IF, you don't start protecting your freedoms. You can hide under your bed till they drag you out and take you to the Gulag. Happened under Stalin all the time, AND, it can happen here.

I wish Congress had first passed mandatory E-Verify laws and waited five years to see how many illegal immigrants self deported. Once the good job opportunities were no longer available, then I think there would have been significantly fewer illegal immigrants still here to apply for amnesty.

Lois2072. No people kill people. No weapon be it a gun, dynamite, c4, knife, or sword can be used without human/personal assitance. I know of no gun, knife, explosive, or other means that can kill by itself. A gun can load itself and then pull the trigger, an exlosive detonating itself. I will agree that this kids hatred for mankind led the way along with not having all his oars in the water. Are we to take vehicles off the road and banned them just to get the duink driver off the road? Is that any less of a weapon than a gun in the WRONG hands?

While it is in our nation's best interest to resolve our immigration problems, this bill smacks of rewarding the rich immigrants, who can afford to get a PHD, with top service, while those who may not have taken up medicine, or who do not aim for a doctorate, may be handed some dog poop in a bag.

One must ask themselves why the Old White Party would ever embrace immigration? And we all know the answer is for the votes. But, what Republicans say on their media outlets and what they actually do in our halls of government are usually at odds with each other.

While touting "the goal is to give a path to citizenship to those who are already in our nation", there will be no amnesty and these folks will have to come out, identify themselves and could be forced to return to their country of origin until a panel of Southern States leaders, like Arizona's Jan Brewer gets to decide if these un-citizens will be allowed to enter her state, and could make it so all the immigrants are pushed to other, more tolerant states, based on race and ethnicity. When did Jan Brewer or John McCain or Jeff Flake ever embrace the latino before, in Arizona? Only in election years, or now, when the past election showed the ramifications of the Old White Party who lost to a minority vote, do we hear the GOP push for helping the poor Latinos in our nation!

We must keep our eyes open when there is talk of fixing the border before anything can proceed as John McCain calls out. Not one word will be said about the past efforts by the Obama administration to double border patrols, double the length of the Southern fence and liberals will get no credit at all for the highest deportation rate in the history of our nation. Nope, the only thing we hear from the rightwing is to take credit for what this administration has done, but now want to fix it with drone missile surveilance across our Southern States.

Think about this! In this immigration package, the only border we see in the discussion is the Southern Border. What about the Northern Border? Not one word. So we can assume this is really just a race for the Latino vote!

We also know there is no love for minorities in the Republican Party! When we see Clint Eastwood give his famous "Chair Speech" the audience is mono-chromatic!

So there must be a political goal and Americans need to see what is being offered up and by which party!

Are the drone surveillances a way to create a bigger police state and prepare us for a military state in the future for our nation, as GOP Neo-Cons envision?

Is the path to citizenship a clever way for the Republican elites to gain legal access to a cheap workforce they no longer will have to hide in the shadows, while American workers are forced to compete with them for lower wages? Unless we improve our living wages for American workers, this bill could be a recipe for the Romneys to further erode the requirements for a full-time workforce and for all the corporations that feed from the trough of At Will Employment to further erode the ability of the long time workers. with higher pay, to work less and less hours, so profits for the corporations can be enhanced at the detriment of the workers that pioneered the corporation, now to be sent home, with 24 hour workweeks?

Republicans, who promised jobs, and promoted none with actual legislation, always oppose minimum wage increases for our American workers, while forcing them to compete with new immigrants for low wages, allowing the corporations to cash in on more profits, while keeping the Middle Class moving toward the poor side of town, while the profiteers hide their assets in the Caymans!

Be alert, Americans! When we see what is in the actual immigration bill! Look at who profits (corporations), who loses (American workers), due to the contents of the bill and the amendments that each party will add to it!

Look who will point fingers at the bills and watch what the Tea Party does with it once it reaches the House of Representatives, run by John Boehner! And when it fails to pass, the GOP will place the blame upon the Democrats, who refused to allow tanks to patrol the border that Republicans pushed for!

I believe this bill is more designed to seal our borders than to actually give access to our nation for folks who came from Southern Latitudes! Without amnesty, these folks will continue to hide! Why shouldn't they? If they will have to get placed at the end of the line that never moves, then all we have done is give them empty promises!

Let us hope the Liberals, who embrace the Latino populations with open arms, can craft something worthy of consideration, and not fall for the desires of a Tea Party jonesing for an isolationist border fence and lower wage workers that serves no one but the rich! And when we have to wonder what kind of bird that is up in our skies, know it was the desires of the GOP to use drone aircraft, with infra-red capability to watch us in our homes, for the campaign financing the GOP needs and the military industrial complex to profit from!

The economy is doing OK in a slow recovery mode. DOW is about to go over its all time high. Earnings are generally up, on lower expected revenues, meaning that the private sector is cutting back successfully on lower demand. Unemployment is still too high, but most of that is education and/or skill related. In bad times, companies learn to produce more with less labor.

On Benghazi...maybe you need to do some research. Might want to start with Fox News, which did a reasonably accurate story on the time line of events showing that once the error of inadequate security for the Benghazi consulate was made, there was no way the Ambassador or the State Department IT Officer could have been saved, because they were dead or captured within 30-45 minutes of the first attack.

                                                      You're the joke KC Eddie.

Moody's dropped their rating because of the House threat to default on debt. There was no impact on bond rates, which are already at rock-bottom. Food Stamps and unemployment benefits are indicative of the lack in private sector hiring, which is due to a lack of demand. Record earnings with falling revenue is an indication that companies are producing a little less in services and goods, with a lot less labor, in order to hold their profit margins.

The former Navy Seals were both killed in a mortar attack on the Annex (which was a secret CIA operation) some six hours following the attack on the Consulate. The mortars were apparently spotted shortly before they were used and only three to four rounds were fired into the Annex compound. Up until that point, the compound had not been subject to heavy weapons fire, but only sporadic small arms fire. The Annex compound, even after the brief mortar attack, was never breached. The mortar attack took place at approximately 4:00 AM. Shortly after the attack on the Consulate, an additional rescue force consisting of eight more Americans, (reinforced by additional pro-American militia, who met them at the Benghazi Airport) was dispatched from Tripoli. They arrived in Benghazi at around 1AM, but were delayed and reached the Annex at approximately 3:00 AM.

In the absence of heavy weapons fire (the mortars) it may have appeared to those at the scene that no additional reinforcement was necessary to cope with the situation on the ground. Particularly, if there was no immediate additional ground force available outside of the one from the Tripoli Embassy. Plus, additional outside force would have required coordination with the Libyan government and an explanation to them of the secret CIA Annex site.

Following the mortar attack, it was apparently determined to withdraw ALL U.S. personnel from Benghazi, back to Tripoli. This was done at approximately daybreak, by which time, the terrorists were themselves withdrawing, allowing for a convoy of U.S. personnel and local militia, from the Annex, back to the Airport.

The former Navy Seals were contracted employees to either the CIA or State Department. One had been posted to the Annex; one arrived with the rescue mission flown in from Tripoli.

In a war, you don't win every battle or skirmish...ask the friends and relatives of the thousands of dead from Iraq and Afghanistan. Benghazi was a tactical loss...not a strategic defeat.

Faced with small arms fire on a secret CIA site, in a sovereign country, it may have been decided that no additional force (which would have required additional coordination with the Libyan government, plus explanation to them of the secret CIA site

Its fast growing. They could careless about the people its as I said the vote they want. As long as both parties keep complaining the other won't cooperate means nothing will get done for awhile to come.

Why can't dumb rednecks understand that your guns are not necessary to defend a country with largest nuclear arsenal of any nation on earth?

Law is based on rational thinking. It is not rational to believe that a bunch of tobacco-chewing, cheap beer-drinking, uneducated, armed, ignorant rednecks are necessary to defend our country.

We have the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard to do that. When the Constitution was written, we did not have the massive defense industry that we now have.

Having an education doesn't make you smart. It makes you educated. Some of the dumbest people I have ever known were highly educated but couldn't wipe their own ass.
