First Thoughts: Obama to embrace Senate deal

Obama expected to embrace Senate deal… The reason Obama is headed to Las Vegas: No state has better epitomized the power of the Latino vote… The Kabuki dance… On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base… On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker… And Senate is set to confirm John Kerry as secretary of state.

*** Obama to embrace Senate deal: When President Obama delivers his immigration speech at 2:55 pm ET today in Las Vegas, he will hug the principles that the bipartisan group of senators outlined yesterday. “POTUS will applaud the bipartisan Senate agreement that is very consistent with his long-held view and lay out his vision for immigration reform,” top White House aide Dan Pfeiffer just tweeted. Obama also will call on the Senate to act on the legislation soon. While one publication is reporting that the White House has developed its own immigration-reform plan that’s more liberal than the bipartisan Senate outline, that information is outdated. Had the bipartisan senators NOT acted yesterday, you likely would have seen Obama offer his own plan. But the senators did act, and their plan is the plan. The last thing the White House wants to do is blow up this fragile coalition. As we reported yesterday, the White House floated the idea of doing a more liberal or progressive bill during a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week, as a counter to what was being offered in the Senate, and the CHC shot the idea down. The CHC’s advice to the White House was let the Senate work its will – at least for now. That said, the White House insisted last night to reporters that if the Senate coalition falters and if bill shows signs of dying, the president will step in with his own legislation.

Larry Downing / Reuters

President Barack Obama speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House, Jan. 24, 2013.

*** Vegas, baby: So why is the president giving his speech in Las Vegas? There is no state that better epitomizes the power of the Latino vote in American politics than Nevada. In 2010, Harry Reid won 69% of Latinos in his race against Sharron Angle, according to the exit polls, saving his Senate seat from a GOP that was convinced was theirs for the taking. And two years later, Obama won 71% of that vote -- matching what he received nationwide. The three states that have moved the most dramatically in presidential contests since 2004 have been Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, and it’s due primarily to the Latino vote in all three states. (New Mexico is not even remotely a purple state anymore.) In Nevada, in particular, Latinos make up 27% of the state’s population and 19% of the voters in the 2012 election. Translation: The Latino influence in the state has even more room to grow.

*** Kabuki dance: While Obama will embrace the bipartisan Senate framework today, one Republican senator who’s part of the deal -- Sen. Lindsey Graham -- was criticizing Obama on FOX last night. “In 2008, he promised comprehensive immigration reform in the first year of his presidency, and it took all the oxygen out of the room,” Graham said. More: “In 2007, when we were trying to do immigration reform, he folded like a cheap suit because labor, the AFL-CIO, got mad at the bill to allow temporary workers... So I don't need a lecture from Barack Obama about bipartisanship; he was never very good at it in the Senate.” Moreover, top Marco Rubio staffers last night tweeted that Obama was “to oppose security and enforcement triggers,” even though the article that was cited never explicitly said that; it simply said Obama “does not favor linking legal status to border security.” So what’s going on here? This is all Kabuki theater to show that these Republicans aren’t in bed with the White House. The best way some Republicans privately believe they have to get more folks on board (or at least to convince some groups not to be overly aggressive AGAINST this plan) is to not look like they are “giving” the president a “win.” Politico also makes this point: “Whether he likes it or not, the president’s top legislative priority rests in the hands of McCain, his former 2008 rival, and Rubio, one of the GOP’s leading candidates to take back the White House in 2016.”

*** On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base: That said, this is an important test for Marco Rubio. He has spent the last several days selling comprehensive immigration to conservatives. And today, he speaks with Rush Limbaugh, who has criticized the bipartisan Senate framework. (“This immigration bill that everybody’s touting on TV is essentially the Bush immigration bill that was beat back in 2007,” Limbaugh said yesterday.) One of Ronald Reagan’s great talents was selling compromise to his party -- and declaring victory. Can Rubio pull this off, especially on an issue that base conservatives have opposed in the past two presidential elections? Rubio’s job with Limbaugh isn’t to convince him to sign on; we’re not sure that’s possible. What Rubio’s goal is today is to convince Limbaugh not to aggressively be AGAINST what he’s doing. If he can pull this off, it will be quite the feather in his hat as we get closer and closer to 2016 -- and perhaps show Rubio has some Reagan-like political skills.

*** On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker: For those who closely follow American politics, Chuck Schumer is an easy target to mock. The running joke, for years, has been that the most dangerous place in DC is to be between Schumer and a TV camera. Perhaps lost in this caricature, however, is that Schumer has become the Democrats’ mover and shaker on key legislation -- dare we say the most effective dealmaker on the Democratic side of the aisle right now. On immigration, he’s reaching across the aisle to work with John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio. And on guns, the legislation that has the best chance of passage is Schumer’s (on universal background checks) where he just might MIGHT convince Republican Tom Coburn to come on aboard his bill. What made Ted Kennedy a lion of the Senate was that he had influence with his Democratic colleagues (if he was backing something, they had cover to get on board) but also the ability to reach across the aisle. And so it’s worth asking: Is Chuck Schumer the closest thing to that right now? And we haven’t even touched on how relentless (and effective) Schumer has been the Senate Democrats’ de facto political director. Is there anyone better at candidate recruiting and clearly primary fields right now than Schumer?

*** Senate set to confirm Kerry: In non-immigration news, U.S. Senate today is expected to vote on John Kerry’s nomination to be secretary of state, and he’s a sure bet to win an easy confirmation. As one of us reported yesterday, if Kerry is confirmed and if his letter of resignation is received tomorrow, Massachusetts will set the special general election for June 25 -- with the primaries to take place on April 30. Also, Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is expected to announce his pick of an interim senator to fill the seat until the special election.

The right is apparently afraid of a little competition. I'm in a very competitive career field and I work side by side with a LOT of immigrants (none Hispanic). I'm not worried about any of them taking my job because I work HARD to keep it.

BearDown, you work in a very competitive field with immigrants. How's your salary been going in real terms? Alan Greenspan, our former chairman of the fed, said he wanted more immigrants and amnesty in order to keep wages and salaries down. And it worked. In general, household incomes have been stagnant. You work your tail off, but you're STILL at the mercy of your employer and who knows, one day, he or she may decide you're simply too old (expensive) and hire an H1-B to replace you. Some jobs can also be moved over seas--lawyer, radiologist, accountant. Unless your job requires you to physically be in the US, don't get so complacent.

For all the people blaming the illegals why dont you talk about the owners of the businesses that are exploiting them? If you want to stop illegal immigration stop hiring them and prosecute the owners!

Absolutely! Someone did write about this a couple of pages ago. Go after the companies that hire illegals, hard. Stiff penalties, maybe some jail time for flagrant violations. Problem will be over very quickly.

Or is this somehow racist? If Arizona proposed doing this, would Obama's justice department sue Arizona?

#130.3 - Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:59 AM EST

Agreed. So why hasn't OBAMA made eVerify mandatory? That's what you need to really fine and penalize employers. As it is, they can't check documents "too closely" or they'll get sued for discrimination. Heck, the Obama administration has already sued one company that dared to ask a job applicant to show his green card at the time he applied rather than waiting until he was offered the job. And in order to really sock it to an employer you need to show he KNOWINGLY hired illegal aliens, which is why you need to require them to use eVerify. If they don't, you've got'em.

President OBAMA has awakened to and is aware of the OBAMA hatred that exsist in this country, he know this has a better chance of fruition and becoming law if he is not the author of it. Even if the Senators plans mirror some of the very same goals and principles of his plan. He is the President, and he has to act, he cannot ignore the needs of the country as the House has done in creating jobs, the last two years. Yet if there is an alternative method to get the job done he is wise enough to allow it to be done through those channels.

The best example is ROMNEYCARE, of which OBAMACARE is just a FEDERAL version of it. Yet becasue of OBAMA hatred, OBAMACARE is reviled, and attacked in republican circles, even though the concept is a repbulcian idea. A perfect example of the hypocrites. Praying for the poor and needy on Sundays, then Monday stabbing them in the backs, trying to cut their safety net, badmouthing them with their 47% remarks.

fastball, we don't trust any amnesty for two reasons:

We were promised that the 1986 amnesty would be the ONLY one because our laws would be enforced. They weren't, and now many of the same guys (literally) are back saying we have to have another amnesty in order to get enforcement.

Obama has already shown that it doesn't really matter what's in an immigration law, he's going to do what he wants, and what he wants is to NOT enforce the law. Look at DACA. And he's letting the PARENTS who brought their kids remain here, too, even though they've already had due process and have been ordererd deported.

Of course not, the house has rejected countless bills that they used to be for just because Obama was for it.

Why would this be any different.......Obstruct at all costs.

I guess that's why when he actually proposed a budget he couldn't get 1 of his party in the Senate to vote for it? Go figure!

Illegal immigration is a good basis for why America should cease to exist and split into two separate countries.

In ours, we'll have a legal immigration process, and all illegal scum will be deported.

In yours, you can go 90% non-white as fast as you want, and just flood in 20, 30, 40 million illegals a year if you'd like.

America's finished as an idea. Let's move on.

And you don't think RED states would crumble under that proposal?

                          hahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahah

10 of the top 10 poorest states are red.......They also get far more Fed tax $$$ than they pay into.

9 of the top 10 states that pay more Fed tax $$$ than they receive back are Blue.

We could balance the budget in 2 years if RED states didn't suck off the govt teat all day every day.

No, the Red states would thrive.

Romney won everyone making over 100K by 10% and everyone making over $50K by 7%, according to CNN.

Obama won those making under $30K by 26% according to the New York Times.

We have the payers, you have the takers.

When most black people fled to the blue states, the poverty situation in the South would change overnight. The good, hard-working blacks, some of those would stay.

Most people in red states on welfare, and in blue states on welfare, and across the country at large, are Democrats.

Meanwhile, the Right pays most the taxes, and Romney won the wage groups that pay 90% of federal income taxes.

You'd have to hope that the rightwingers in the NE didn't flee to the Red States or you'd be screwed lol.

                            Nope

RED states are by far the biggest welfare suckers and poorest in the union.

You need to get a clue, you look like an ass clown saying red states could form their own country.

And you seem to prove that red states are also the least educated by far.

                            ahahhahahahaha

                              Because of Democrats.

The majority of people on welfare in 9 of the 13 Southern states are black, voting 95% Democrats.

In Mississippi, 83% of people on welfare are black. Once those deadbeats flee to your states, you'll get poorer quick. Any that want to get a job are welcome to stay. The blacks already with jobs, obviously can stay too, but most will probably want to live in a Democrat run country.

                              http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/resource/character/fy2009/tab08

Demo-Rat scum came up with the fraud of comparing states to states, because they don't want to take credit for all their people on handouts in Red states....fortunately TANF breaks down racial demographics on welfare in every state.

Since, on top of that, we know DemoRats win the poor 2 to 1 in elections, there's no debate about who the deadbeats are.

                                      So I don't need a lecture from Barack Obama about bipartisanship; he was never very good at it in the Senate.” Moreover, top Marco Rubio staffers last night tweeted that Obama was “to oppose security and enforcement triggers,” even though the article that was cited never explicitly said that;

                                      And...

The best way some Republicans privately believe they have to get more folks on board (or at least to convince some groups not to be overly aggressive AGAINST this plan) is to not look like they are “giving” the president a “win.”

Hmmm...The only solution for Republicans to act in the best interest of the country is to embrace President Obama's plan while condemning him. Okay. Sounds like our president is being a leader by embracing the art of diplomacy: Letting others have things your way. Whatever it takes, at least until more adults join public service.

Great another bill that probably won't be upheld on Immigration. Why keep making bills and laws and not enforce them on Immigration. The only true way is to stop issuing all the green cards to work here. If they are not American no job for them plain and simple. Stop all the chaos with Immigration and if they are caught do like the other countries do throw them in prison for a while then deport them back to their own country. The President, Senate and Congress talk a good game now let's enforce what law we make.

In regard to immigration, Obama will wrap himself in the flag, beat his chest, and take credit for making this happen and making the "obstructionist conservatives" come to the table on this bi-partisan deal. He'll make it his own and I bet he even has children present at the signing, maybe a Mariachi band and some other Hispanic symbols to show that his is president everyman. People will forget fast that his plan was different from the deal struck by both parties but he'll preach to everyone that he was the driving force behind making those conservatives come to heal and further incite partisan division were he can.

I only wished he attacked the biggest problems we have been facing for years with the same zeal and fervor which he wages wars on other much less relevant issues he conjures up. Our biggest and most pressing problems are, (1) high unemployment with millions out of work, (2) an economy ready to fall back into recession, (3) meteoric spending and unprecedented debt, (4) and complete failure to balance our budget, of course a budget to balance would be a good place to start but he has not put one together in years. I guess you can't fault his spending, or failure to cut spending, if you do not account for what the spending is going to.

A quick aside to the legion of anti gun Obama Disciples posting on here, lets stick to discussion relevant to the article about immigration and not jump into off-topic platitudes about guns being the source of all evil in the world. I know Fearless Leader has you pre-programmed to salivate out anti gun dogma at a moments notice but, please, try to keep it in the gun debate forums. Maybe you should think about the biggest and scariest issues, as outlined above, and how Obama can resolve those, oh wait, I almost forgot, he can't do anything about them, and he knows it, and so we need to shift the focus of his proletariat masses to keep their little minds occupied on each new enemy that he conjures up.

Illegal aliens are lawbreakers. If our government is simly going to roll-over and effectively give them amnesty then there should be some SERIOUS consequences to deter others from following in their path.

I would like to see that ANY person who broke our laws that ends up with permanent status as a result of this reform, do so at the cost of NEVER being allowed to vote in the United States or receive government benefits. If they, instead, choose to return to their country of origin and then come to the US legally then they should not be penalized other than to pay any back taxes owed and pay back any government benefits taken while here illegally.

                                                            Let's see how many

"Every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country."

Really, learn the English language what it says is ..... will NOT of course include...... those born of foreigners, aliens, etc... are not to be called a citizen. Second, the other stupid argument being that my ancestors were illegal. Sorry that is a grass straw argument and trying to divert from the facts. When people can't back up with facts they try to use emotion. Even if my ancestors did it illegally and as far as I can tell they came here legally after world war II, I am in support of doing this. Really is it that bad to require a parent to be a citizen whether natural born and/or one of them legally becomes a citizen to allow their child to be called a citizen. What is the harm in setting some limits. All the immigration reform currently won't stop anchor babies because anchor babies open the gateway to taxpayer entitlement programs such as welfare, food stamps, etc. Thus, this is a better lifestyle than the countries these hardworking people come from and I understand why they do it but we should help them help their country so it is a better place to live and work. We cannot keep up the pace we are and expect our kids who have the right and expectation that we as adults do the right thing to ensure they don't get weighted down by the debt burden we are creating for them.

It's fitting that Obama is making a pitch for amnesty here.

And Jay, my citizenship is the CHOICE of my immigrant grandparents and my parents. Moreover, they made that choice out of a desire to be AMERICANS, not for economic gain or a convenient passport as so many immigrants do. As for wearing the USMC uniform, I live in the DC area and unfortunately the military are no more honorable or "special" than anyone else. For example, the Old Guard at Ft. Myer was found to have a burglary gang operating in its ranks. The uniform can be a cover for lots of unpatriotic and even criminal activities.
