Obama expected to embrace Senate deal… The reason Obama is headed to Las Vegas: No state has better epitomized the power of the Latino vote… The Kabuki dance… On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base… On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker… And Senate is set to confirm John Kerry as secretary of state.
*** Obama to embrace Senate deal: When President Obama delivers his immigration speech at 2:55 pm ET today in Las Vegas, he will hug the principles that the bipartisan group of senators outlined yesterday. “POTUS will applaud the bipartisan Senate agreement that is very consistent with his long-held view and lay out his vision for immigration reform,” top White House aide Dan Pfeiffer just tweeted. Obama also will call on the Senate to act on the legislation soon. While one publication is reporting that the White House has developed its own immigration-reform plan that’s more liberal than the bipartisan Senate outline, that information is outdated. Had the bipartisan senators NOT acted yesterday, you likely would have seen Obama offer his own plan. But the senators did act, and their plan is the plan. The last thing the White House wants to do is blow up this fragile coalition. As we reported yesterday, the White House floated the idea of doing a more liberal or progressive bill during a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week, as a counter to what was being offered in the Senate, and the CHC shot the idea down. The CHC’s advice to the White House was let the Senate work its will – at least for now. That said, the White House insisted last night to reporters that if the Senate coalition falters and if bill shows signs of dying, the president will step in with his own legislation.

Larry Downing / Reuters
President Barack Obama speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House, Jan. 24, 2013.
*** Vegas, baby: So why is the president giving his speech in Las Vegas? There is no state that better epitomizes the power of the Latino vote in American politics than Nevada. In 2010, Harry Reid won 69% of Latinos in his race against Sharron Angle, according to the exit polls, saving his Senate seat from a GOP that was convinced was theirs for the taking. And two years later, Obama won 71% of that vote -- matching what he received nationwide. The three states that have moved the most dramatically in presidential contests since 2004 have been Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, and it’s due primarily to the Latino vote in all three states. (New Mexico is not even remotely a purple state anymore.) In Nevada, in particular, Latinos make up 27% of the state’s population and 19% of the voters in the 2012 election. Translation: The Latino influence in the state has even more room to grow.
*** Kabuki dance: While Obama will embrace the bipartisan Senate framework today, one Republican senator who’s part of the deal -- Sen. Lindsey Graham -- was criticizing Obama on FOX last night. “In 2008, he promised comprehensive immigration reform in the first year of his presidency, and it took all the oxygen out of the room,” Graham said. More: “In 2007, when we were trying to do immigration reform, he folded like a cheap suit because labor, the AFL-CIO, got mad at the bill to allow temporary workers... So I don't need a lecture from Barack Obama about bipartisanship; he was never very good at it in the Senate.” Moreover, top Marco Rubio staffers last night tweeted that Obama was “to oppose security and enforcement triggers,” even though the article that was cited never explicitly said that; it simply said Obama “does not favor linking legal status to border security.” So what’s going on here? This is all Kabuki theater to show that these Republicans aren’t in bed with the White House. The best way some Republicans privately believe they have to get more folks on board (or at least to convince some groups not to be overly aggressive AGAINST this plan) is to not look like they are “giving” the president a “win.” Politico also makes this point: “Whether he likes it or not, the president’s top legislative priority rests in the hands of McCain, his former 2008 rival, and Rubio, one of the GOP’s leading candidates to take back the White House in 2016.”
*** On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base: That said, this is an important test for Marco Rubio. He has spent the last several days selling comprehensive immigration to conservatives. And today, he speaks with Rush Limbaugh, who has criticized the bipartisan Senate framework. (“This immigration bill that everybody’s touting on TV is essentially the Bush immigration bill that was beat back in 2007,” Limbaugh said yesterday.) One of Ronald Reagan’s great talents was selling compromise to his party -- and declaring victory. Can Rubio pull this off, especially on an issue that base conservatives have opposed in the past two presidential elections? Rubio’s job with Limbaugh isn’t to convince him to sign on; we’re not sure that’s possible. What Rubio’s goal is today is to convince Limbaugh not to aggressively be AGAINST what he’s doing. If he can pull this off, it will be quite the feather in his hat as we get closer and closer to 2016 -- and perhaps show Rubio has some Reagan-like political skills.
*** On Schumer becoming the Democrats’ dealmaker: For those who closely follow American politics, Chuck Schumer is an easy target to mock. The running joke, for years, has been that the most dangerous place in DC is to be between Schumer and a TV camera. Perhaps lost in this caricature, however, is that Schumer has become the Democrats’ mover and shaker on key legislation -- dare we say the most effective dealmaker on the Democratic side of the aisle right now. On immigration, he’s reaching across the aisle to work with John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio. And on guns, the legislation that has the best chance of passage is Schumer’s (on universal background checks) where he just might MIGHT convince Republican Tom Coburn to come on aboard his bill. What made Ted Kennedy a lion of the Senate was that he had influence with his Democratic colleagues (if he was backing something, they had cover to get on board) but also the ability to reach across the aisle. And so it’s worth asking: Is Chuck Schumer the closest thing to that right now? And we haven’t even touched on how relentless (and effective) Schumer has been the Senate Democrats’ de facto political director. Is there anyone better at candidate recruiting and clearly primary fields right now than Schumer?
*** Senate set to confirm Kerry: In non-immigration news, U.S. Senate today is expected to vote on John Kerry’s nomination to be secretary of state, and he’s a sure bet to win an easy confirmation. As one of us reported yesterday, if Kerry is confirmed and if his letter of resignation is received tomorrow, Massachusetts will set the special general election for June 25 -- with the primaries to take place on April 30. Also, Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is expected to announce his pick of an interim senator to fill the seat until the special election.

If the "solution to a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun". (La Pierre, NRA leader)
Then:
The solution to a bad guy with an assault rifle is a good guy with an assault rifle.
The solution to a bad guy with a rocket launcher is a good guy with a rocket launcher.
The solution to a bad guy with a nuke is a good guy with a nuke.
HOW DOES IT END?
IN A PERMANENT, NATION-WIDE WAR ZONE?
Do we want an ever-increasing, endless culture of violence - as promoted by the multi-billion dollar $$gun manufacturers & gun lobby/NRA?
Given there were 6 shootings at gun shows by so called "professionals" last weekend, doesn't that kind of shoot that theory to @!$%#?
I've come to the conclusion we should allow these gun nuts to hold a show on every corner and allow them dazzle us with their expertise...
At the rate they're going, they will be extinct in no time! lol
IN A PERMANENT, NATION-WIDE WAR ZONE?
You mean like every Democratic run, major metropolitan city in the United States?
See, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Atlanta, Oakland for example.
Sure, you guys have all the answers.
Lanza fired about 100 shots in 2 minutes, with a Bushmaster Assault Rifle.
In the aftermath of 12/14, America's culture of violence is in focus:
The chief medical examiner has said the ammunition was a type designed to expend its energy in the victim's tissues and stay inside the body to inflict the maximum amount of damage."
"The gunman in the Connecticut shooting rampage was carrying an arsenal of hundreds of rounds of especially deadly ammunition – enough to kill just about every student in the school if given enough time" (Huffington Post)
Life in a permanent war zone must never be America's future.
NOW is the time for Congress to act.
One last time. For a while, it was instructive reading posts from Albany Joe. He was, and is, always wrong, and he is bitter about that. You learn what NOT to do from this guy. His is the face of the right-wing.
He is desperate for validation, and he comes here daily to regurgitate his failed dogma and spread his venom. He was so pleased that Romney would win. He knew President Obama's policies would throw him into the dustbin of history. What do we hear from Romney these days? "Hey, it's dusty in here."
The economy was tanking and the stock market was plunging when President Obama was inaugurated the first time. That was great news for Joe. It was good to see the President and the country fail. Today of course, the market has recovered virtually all of the stock market losses. The economy has added jobs for almost four consecutive years. That really pisses Joe off.
It hasn't recovered enough, according to Joe. The unemployment rate is too high. That is because demand is down and market efficiencies have replaced jobs. That's the market doing what it does, but that's only good when a Republican is in office.
So this bitter cup of Joe comes here to excoriate the Obama Administration - the second one, finding fault in every nook and cranny. He wails about the state of the union. He hates the inept leadership of the President and his miserable failures.
Yet, the economy chugs along. The market goes up. New jobs are added. The rate of increase in the deficit is actually going down. It sure seems that when Joe tells us, "life is good," he must be referring to these positive developments. But he's not.
Nope, good old three-note Joe continues to bitch. The three notes in Joe's scale? Dough, Ray, and me. Joe is all about dough. Can't get enough. What the hell is Ray doing in there? That's what Joe wants to know. Ray is everybody who's trying to take the money he "earns" trading paper. And me? Well, Joe gets stuck on that note. It's all about me, me, me.
Still, Joe wants to be right. So, he does what all the right-wingers do. He hopes and prays for failure. That is Joe's validation. Golly gosh, if only the economy would crash. Wouldn't that be great?
THAT is the face of the right wing - the entire crazy lot of them. No matter how many times bitter Joe says or writes, "Life is good," it does not make it true. His equally hateful defender, the vacuous ideologue Caesar Augustus, says Joe is not poverty stricken. He is wrong, too. Both are poverty-stricken, and no amount of money will ever buy them morals or compassion. That is abject poverty, and even barrels of Sam Adams' brews will not change that.
A good guy with a gun, can and does become a bad gun, with just one squeeze of a trigger. Something the NRA won't recognize, the common denominator is the gun.
Those that clutch guns are usually the most cowardly, and immature in the country. They never outgrew playing cowboy and Indian's, or cops and robbers. Some say it is an extension of their manhood. Me, my guns are for sporting purpose only but still the guns are the common denominator.
WCA, see Toronto
Dave,
It's the poisons in that river carp he fishes out of the Hudson River from the bank behind the Projects where he lives that derange his mind. He sits there with his fishing pole in one hand and a Budweiser in the other, eating Cheetos and dreaming of all the money he might make in the market if only he had a few extra bucks to invest. . . .
Good Morning Backhouse!
Brace yourself, you have opened up the "truther" gates! lol
They swarm to their conpiracys like dogs to a meat-wagon...
"On January 16, 2013, the President put forward a specific plan to protect out children and communities by reducing gun violence. The plan combines executive actions and calls for legislative action that would help keep guns out of the wrong hands, ban assault and high-capacity magazines, make our schools safer, and increase access to mental health services." http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/preventing-gun-violence
8 children die every day from guns, and there are 33,000 gun deaths in America every year.
By taking concrete actions in Congress, we'll demonstrate our commitment to justice.
To begin, we will truly honor and dignify the 20 little ones and their protectors whose lives were lost on 12/14 - who we never knew and will never meet.
The only reason why a FEW republicans in the senate agree on this is to try and save there party from getting blown out the next presidential election with the Latino Vote. As long as conservatives have nuts like Hannity, Limbo and Fox News talking down to people and making it seem like they are a bunch of takers instead of makers then they will never earn the majority of votes from Latinos Blacks, Asians.
Mayor Bloomberg said:
"We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again. For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns."
WCA -
Nice deflection. I am sure the lax gun laws in states like Arizona and Virginia have nothing to do with the availability of guns in Chicago and other major cities. Oh wait, according to mayors and law enforcement officials they do! In fact, an ATF study found that "straw man" purchases and corrupt licensed gun dealers supply a high percentage of the guns used in crimes.
Oh, by the way, what about that Democratic run, major metropolitan city of New York that has decreased their violent crime significantly without arming everyone?
Jason797 - What the heck are you talking about. Don't you understand that your liberal loons aren't talking about the article we just read? You better get on their memo list and stick with their talking points or you will be in big trouble with them. It is pathetic of you to start a conversation about immigration when your friends want to talk about guns!
It's their way or the highway Jason, learn it and live it or else!!!
Feisty, more on truthing...
Deer don't wear armor.
*** On Rubio selling reform to the conservative base: That said, this is an important test for Marco Rubio. He has spent the last several days selling comprehensive immigration to conservatives.
============
I think one might argue there is a difference between talking to people about something v 'selling' them on the idea. Rubio has changed no (conservatives) position on the issue. There is no epiphany happening here. Rubio has future ambitions and needs something to say he's done. Something that is big.
I tweeted this morning in reference to McCain and Immigration. It is a sad day that a Senator openly says that they are doing what they are doing first and foremost for political gain. Republicans are supporting this effort to buy via legislation, the Latino vote. This same group has the never to continuously charge that the President "panders for votes" from this community and that community, but McCain openly gets in front a mic and says we are doing this because the Republican Party has been getting hammered with the Latino vote.
The real question that is begging to be answered...to the GOP...would there be a 'The gang of 8' in the Senate tackling this issue if either Romney had won the WH and/or if Romney had received the % of the Latino vote that the President did?
If the Senate bill on Immigration is a good and fair one, then go for it Mr. President. If the try and and change it, or start to play "games", then introduce your own and run with it.
LaPierre. What an excuse for a human being. His gun craziness is more important to him than a CHILDS LIFE. Disgusting. Shove gun control down his throat. Join the Army LaPierre, then you can run around with all the assault weapons you want and play Cowboy.
the immigration plan will be the problem in processing 11-14 million applications, plus once amnesty is passed many million more will swam across the border.
For a while, it was instructive reading posts from Albany Joe.

(or, if you are a lefty liberal, at least try to be less miserable)
Don't you understand that your liberal loons aren't talking about the article we just read?
Much like politicians, the liberals here like to deflect. They know that amnesty will not be in the best interests of this country. But unlike the right, who is calling out their reps in congress, the left will just bury their heads and support their reps blindly like sheep.
Homicide rates are up 8% in "extended castle doctrine" or "stand your ground" states because EVERYONE thinks he's a good guy with a gun, and because the mere availability of deadly force makes it a commonly used option in a heated disagreement. In spite of that these Wild West approaches to law and order don't serve as a deterrent at all...all of this is statistically proven. Not only does carrying a gun not deter crime, it doesn't even do a good job of ensuring your own safety.
http://www.npr.org/2013/01/29/170456129/armed-good-guys-and-the-realities-of-facing-a-gunman
Let's say Dan McKown hadn't hesitated, hadn't tried to warn off the man who nearly killed him. He could have just as easily gotten into a shootout with another "good guy with a gun" even as the "bad guy with a gun" continued on his shooting rampage.
The NRA's vision of nirvana doesn't work...period.
Saxon, the same can be said of deporting 11-14 million people. This isn't about amnesty, Reagan did that ad it didn't work. This is about holding responsible those that cross our borders without the proper papers.
WTF???
Judging from 99% of the comments from the RWNJ's yesterday and today it isn't TOO obvious they have no idea what is in the reform package!
Easier to gather here and parade their ignorance & impotent rage, I guess! lol
Well said John B. A good gun with a gun and a bad guy with a gun can change with just one squeeze of a trigger.
What is obvious about Washington these days is that law abiding American citizens are on the hook for the solve nothing politicians. Whether the gun debate or immigration, nothing being discussed solves any problem. Immigration is a free pass for illegals that broke our laws long enough to have politically motivated politicians grant them a free ride. They will pass new laws that were only needed because they never enforced the old laws. They will grant citizenship in the hopes they vote Democrat. But they will never secure the border, and they will continue to allow anchor babies that promotes breaking our laws for the free ride on American taxpayers. Obama talks a great game, but talk is cheap and so far he has solved nothing.
In non-immigration news, U.S. Senate today is expected to vote on John Kerry’s nomination to be secretary of state, and he’s a sure bet to win an easy confirmation.
Thank you Senator Kerry for your non-apologetic liberal voice all these years in the Senate. You will be missed.
We here in MA all wish you well on your new journey.

Thanks for your column yesterday and your reference to Morton Downey, Jr. I have done some dabbling into how and why Faux sNewzzzzz came to be the great propaganda behemoth it has become, and from an historical point of view, it's a fascinating subject.
As you know, Morton Downey, Jr. is just one of the stepping stones, and as fate would have it, the reason for why Rush Limbaugh came into existence.
But for all you readers out there who don't know where it all began, you can look as far back as 1950, where a guy by the name of Joe Pyne, started the Trash TV and Shock Radio with a little show called It's Your Nickel.
From there, he created a show called The Joe Pyne Show, 1954, which paved the way a succession of conservative shock-jocks like Bob Grant in 1960, and the the utterly despicable Wally George, The Hot Seat, in 1983. Old Wally has been credited with the dubious distinction as "The Father of Combat TV".
The last interesting tidbit, is how the Australian tabloid turd-blossom Rupert Murdoch wedged his way into American media, by buying the TV and radio rights to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.
As far as my avatar of using Gary Owens from Laugh-In, 1970, I was looking to update my picture for the New Year, and in my continuing journey to work on my writing skills and re-invent my alter-ego and pen name, TomasGrande, it thought it was fun and appropriate.
We now interrupt this program to bring you the following message:

Wait a minute now, the President compromising? Everything I read here from the hard-core republicans claim the President is ME< ME< ME, he doesn't know how to compromise.
Is that just more republican hog-wash?
Let's not forget Phoenix, that super, super, super safe GOP run city where nary a shot has been fired in 10

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Shooter Investigators believe the Serial Shooter(s) were responsible for eight murders and at least 29 other shootings in the Phoenix area (some reports put the number as high as 38 incidents)
Rumor has it, poor Jan Brewer was one of the victims of the serial shooter .. but as we all know, bullets don't kill zombies, thus she continues to lead the other zombies of Phoenix.
If you really want a weapon for home defense I suggest a 12 gauge pump action shotgun, just the unmistakable sound of chambering a round should be enough to turn any intruder around. I have accumulated a lot of nice things over the years most of the very valuable items are in a huge safe no two humans could move without equipment, having said that I still don't believe I own anything worth taking a life over. The only way I could squeeze the trigger is if I felt my loved ones were going to harmed, the problem is this, if someone ever broke into my home while we were home, that is the assumption I would have to make. Nobody really gets to plan these things if they happen, but the plan I discussed with the wife is that we would move to the bedroom, lock the door, get down behind the the far side of the bed relative to the door, (the shotgun is under that side of the bed) and if someone breaks through that door, then like I said they would facing a 12 gauge at short range, which for home protection I will take over an assault type rifle or handgun every time. Now here is where old Forrest will sound mean and maybe crazy to some, if they just want my possessions take them I will replace them, if they break through that bedroom door I will end their life, I will make sure of that, I will not be filing charges, going to court, or having civil suits filed against me, or somehow wind up buying a criminal a wheelchair van the way our legal system can work sometimes.
Judging from 99% of the comments from the RWNJ's yesterday and today it isn't TOO obvious they have no idea what is in the reform package!
It's pretty much the same crap they always put in an amnesty package. We all know barely any of it will actually be enforced (kinda like our borders). Which in turn, will just encourage more illegals to cross over. Reagan made a deal with the liberals and no one after him (presidents or congress) ever enforced the deal. By giving amnesty again, it's breaking another part of the deal which was that Reagan's amnesty was the ONLY amnesty to ever happen. Reagan also said that doing amnesty was one of his biggest mistakes.
But, carry one with your ignorant trash talking ginger.
If only the righty conservatives would, could, should be less Wicked.

And what is the MAJOR problem in Phoenix????? I'll bet it isn't American citizens using their guns illegally as often as illegal immigrants using theirs.
Now why don't you go and find some reports for Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Atlanta, and Oakland. Please enlighten us on the liberal cities gun activity.
So JH, how about backing your "bet" up with some statistics? If you're right you should be able to prove it.
FR:
More like kindergarten than kabuki. The Republicons act like four-year old brats. President Obama couldn't even get a single Republican he invited to a screening of the movie Lincoln to attend. Which do they hate more? The black president, or the white president from 150 years ago whose policies made it possible for the black man to become president?
I see little Joey still thinks he's funny. Well he is a clown.
Here's some immigration reform for you; deport everyone who comes in here illegally, and reward those who enter this country according to the law. Stop making excuses for, and pardoning people who come in "through the back door."
That's REAL reform!
We all know that these guys are onlytrying to create a new voting block (Hispanics and Latinos) for themselves, by allowing illegals to stay here.
What's more those people take jobs away from people who need them, and they get free medical care, food stamps, even welfare at taxpayer expense.
We are a melting pot, and we welcome immigrants looking for a new life, and new opportunity.
But, they need to do it the right way, and we need to take care of our own people first!
Tomas Grande:
I'll see your Joe Pyne and raise you one George Putnam, a rabid right-winger and alleged "newsman" at KTTV.
AlexM-lotsanumbers:
Admit it. You have no idea what's in the amnesty package, but since when did a lack of facts close a right-wing sewage valve?
As far as border enforcement, I challenge you to show a better record of immigration law enforcement AND deportation than that of the Obama Administration. If I thought credibility meant anything to you, I would suggest that you check on your nonsense about amnesty. There's not a whole hell of a lot of amnesty in the package. The requirements to qualify for "amnesty" are pretty damned stiff.
Inform yourself.
So Kerry is getting confirmed? What's taking so long with Hagel? Is it the fact he puts country before money and fame that is bothering the world government that runs the US? A bit harder to buy him out?
Backhouse's distillation of the N.R.A.'s plan for peaceful communities:
"The solution to a bad guy with an assault rifle is a good guy with an assault rifle.
The solution to a bad guy with a rocket launcher is a good guy with a rocket launcher.
The solution to a bad guy with a nuke is a good guy with a nuke."
Well, actually, the whole 'good-guy-with-a-nuke' idea did keep Soviet tanks far away from the Bay of Biscay from about 1945 up to 1991 or so, but the concept of strategic deterrence and/or mutually assured destruction doesn't work at the neighbourhood level.
Jesus wept, what are these people on? Come to think of it, maybe they should be on drugs- let La Pierre, Nugent, and some of their bloodthirsty, sadistic minions smoke some reefer and see if that doesn't improve their reasoning ability considerably.
It's pretty hard to imagine that it could get any worse.
Well, let's see,
An immigration proposal that sounds like an actual bi-partisan idea has been on the streets for less than 24 hours, and the anti-everything deep thinkers on here are already explaining to the world why it won't work. These are the people who put the baggers and 'wingers in the congress to make sure nothing positive gets done. Luckily, we should only have to put up with them for one more election cycle. Until then, what say we simply ignore them?
This is WHY republicans won't win the White House in the near future:
Steven Benen, The Maddow Blog:
In this clip, at around the 0:44 mark, Cruz notes that the Senate has "two pending nominations, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel." Describing the nominees, Cruz added, "Both of whom are very prominently..."
After pausing for a few moments, the event's moderator said, "Anti-us?" Cruz responded that Kerry and Hagel are "less than ardent fans of the U.S. military."
Perhaps Ted Cruz would benefit from a reminder about the men he's attacking. John Kerry is a decorated war hero who was awarded combat medals including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Chuck Hagel is a decorated war hero who was awarded combat medals including the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, two Purple Hearts, Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Cruz, meanwhile, who apparently considers himself an "ardent fan of the U.S. military," has never worn a uniform, except maybe on Halloween.
I have a simple request of chickenhawks: try not to impugn the character of decorated war heroes who've done what you only like to talk about.
The Texas Republican has developed a reputation for delivering "bonkers" speeches, but even for him, Cruz's comments over the weekend were cheap and offensive.
http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/01/29/16753966-ardent-fans-of-the-us-military?lite
sorry Pat,
many here in Mass wish he would just go away. btw has he paid for those taxes on his $7,000,000 yacht yet?
Zman, it is just not possible to deport 11 million people. It just can't happen and the cost would be enormous, Yours is not a solution, and as a matter of fact most of your post is a down right misconception. Most people here without proper documentation are working people. Free health care is also a misconception as it is paid for by you and I. However the alternative could be to watch a child die, a fellow human suffer. I mean are you that callus that you can ignore an ill person just because they come here illegally? and food stamps and welfare can only be got with with proper paper work, including a social security number.
So, from you guys who wish there were tougher gun laws think it will change the criminals from owning a gun? Give me a break! How's the tough gun laws in Chicago going? Looks like they might set a new record of deaths! And, by whom? Oh, that would be the criminals! It's not the guns, it's the operators of them that are the bad guys.
I don't own a semi auto rifle, but I am concerned about the future of this country and the world.
We will be out of oil soon enough with no other viable prospects to power the world.
Along with that thought, the possibility of our electric grid failing(we have been warned).
The people of the citys will have no choise but to leave their homes and loot the countryside for food.
I'm thinking I may need more than one. Get it?
Did anyone think that he WASN'T going to back this deal to reward illegal aliens breaking the laws of this land? On top of that, our "representative" government gives $155 million in humanitarian aid to Syria!
The White House"Here, I want to speak directly to the people of Syria. This new aid will mean more warm clothing for children and medicine for the elderly; flour and wheat for your families and blankets, boots and stoves for those huddled in damaged buildings. It will mean health care for victims of sexual violence and field hospitals for the wounded. Even as we work to end the violence against you, this aid will help address some of the immediate needs you face each day." —President Obama
What about the "immediate needs" of the people in THIS country. If these politicians think that the ACTUAL CITIZENS of this country are just going to bend over and let them have their way on this immigration bill, they should really think long and hard about that. What kind of message does that send. They should close the borders for now, not let the illegal horde flood through them. Dems, take heed. I am not a republican, I am no tea party member nor am I a neocon. I am a democrat, a liberal! And there are plenty more of us who draw the line at letting these criminals be rewarded for their bad behavior. You do what you have to do and we shall do what we have to! You can pass a bill alright but we will elect those who will get rid of it. And get rid of these lawbreakers as well. By ANY means! Oh, BTW You send 155 million dollars to Syria and earmarked how much exactly, was it 50 million dollars for OUR FELLOW AMERICANS who were devastated by superstorm Sandy. How about Syria and every other country that you geniuses in D.C. GIVE money to, take care of their own damn country!!! The citizens, LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZENS of this country are fed up. You don't understand that now, but you will!
White Collar Auto
Of course, you know that many of the guns used in homicides in those cities and others come from Confederate states with lax gun laws that enable straw purchasers to by guns in quantity and then sell them to gang bangers up north and to drug lords down south of the boarder. But you'll continue pretending you don't know.
Why in the hell are these comments about gun control, when the article is about immigration reform, and makes no mention of gun control?
Is there some kind of bug on the forums, or are the mouth-breathers unable to put their petty GC War on the back-burner for a few days to address a different issue that our nation faces?
GOVERNMENT SPONSORED DEPORTATION FOR ALL ILLEGALS
GREYHOUND: One adult From Chicago, IL USA to Nuevo Laredo MX......$129.00
13,000,000 illegals times $129.00 = $1,677,000,000
For under 2 Billion dollars, the problem is solved!!
Look into who owns right wing radio. Clear Channel. Who owns Clear Channel? Bain Capital.
Aww, Fisty, it just galls you to not be the first poster, doesn't it? So you become the first response to the first poster. That makes you second, right? No, it makes you a libtard.
Forrest,
The 12 gauge pump action shotgun sound is menacing, its also has a kick to it. I prefer my Smith & Wesson 357 its small, and I am not intimated by its kick. I thinks its more important to be comfortable with your weapon than the sound it makes. To bad I cant have both.
Mexicans are like Muslims, in a way. Their upbringing is un-american.
They both want to hurt or maim if they get angry. Mexicans prefer knives, thank god, but Arabs prefer bombs.
Mexicans will come at the one they're mad at, Muslims will attack innocents in the name of Allah.
This is the main problem letting people raised in other countries into the US.
Mexicans can work here but need to go back home to live.
Anyone with a religion that promotes killing to appease their God needs to be kept out.
Admit it. You have no idea what's in the amnesty package
I'll admit that I've read articles across multiple sites and it's the same bs about enforcing the border, back taxes, fines, back of the line, high-skilled graduated workers, more low-skilled workers (like we need those).
, but since when did a lack of facts close a right-wing sewage valve?
I'm an independent you left wing skin bag, get it right.
As far as border enforcement, I challenge you to show a better record of immigration law enforcement AND deportation than that of the Obama Administration.
Yes, he has done a better job, than others in some areas. There is still only an estimated 60% being caught. But then take in to consideration his dream act executive order last year, moving border patrol stations 50+ miles north of the border, having morton tell ICE agents NOT to go after known illegals, etc, etc. He catches more at the border (still not enough) but then stops our agents from enforcing immigration laws within our borders.
If I thought credibility meant anything to you, I would suggest that you check on your nonsense about amnesty. There's not a whole hell of a lot of amnesty in the package. The requirements to qualify for "amnesty" are pretty damned stiff.
Any package that does not punish them for being here illegally and does not force them back to their country of origin is amnesty. Do you honestly think our government is going to make sure they learn english, make sure they pay back taxes, make sure they pay a fine, etc, etc? I see nothing but a @!$%#load of waivers being issued. All this is going to do is dramatically increase our costs for welfare/medicaid. Not only that, but even under reagan's amnesty, a decent percentage of illegals never even came forward.
Inform yourself.
Go @!$%# yourself.
Now that the President has followed President Bush on many security issues such as the Patriot Act, Guantanamo Bay, Drone attacks. On domestic issues the Bush tax cuts have been endorsed by the President for 99.3% of the people in this country and now it is good to see that he is following the Bush immigration initiative that he proposed in 2007.
By golly JH, I think I need to run out and by a lottery ticket today. Apparently, today is my lucky day; the odds favor me. You see, I randomly selected 4 links to articles on gun violence in Phoenix, and not one of them involves an illegal with a gun. Yet according to you, 99% (assuming that is your statistical definition of "MAJOR") of all gun crimes in Phoenix are committed by illegals. What are the odds of that?
Strict gun laws have done wonders for homicide shooting in Chicago
“We’ve been assuming that when the Baby-Boomer population gets most expensive [to support], that there are going to be [enough] immigrants and their children who are going to be paying into [programs for the elderly], but in the wake of what’s happened in the last five years, we have to reexamine those assumptions.” - Roberto Suro, Professor of Public Policy - University of Southern California - who studies trends in birth rates.
What happened in the last few years is the birth rate has declined more than expected due to the economy. Hispanics think Obama wants to help them. He wants to use them to support the Baby Boomers in their retirement years.
Pal,
You need another stint in racist rehab!
On the other hand thank you for displaying your deep insight of everything WRONG with conservatives these days!
Let's see if any of your com padres have the balls to call you out on your crap..?
JH,
Awww poor crazy JH, did I hurt your feelings for talking about Hannity and Limbo. JH is another example of someone who doesn't know anything about Politics. All Rant and no substance,
Courtesy (?) of Zman2012, we have this pearl of expository wisdom:
"We all know that these guys are onlytrying to create a new voting block (Hispanics and Latinos) for themselves, by allowing illegals to stay here.
What's more those people take jobs away from people who need them, and they get free medical care, food stamps, even welfare at taxpayer expense."
Zman, take some real, factual, street- level info from a man who's been in construction his whole life, and whose family has some not insubstantial agricultural interests in Ohio, South Dakota, and Florida. The people who have the biggest interest in keeping a large population of undocumented aliens here are the ones who give them jobs- and that means big builders, through subcontractors, and Big Agra.
Hiring illegals means they can pay them lower wages, no sick leave, no workmen's comp when they get injured, and no unemployment when they get laid off. As for taking jobs from Americans: Here in Washington State, we had us a real crisis just a couple of years ago; all the Mexicans split back across the border in anticipation of a big crackdown, and all of a sudden there was nobody left to pick the fruit!
Tens of millions of dollars worth of peaches, apples and pears rotted on the branch. Using convicts was tried in a couple of counties, and they sure-'nough did their best (next best thing to early release for those guys, eh?) but were bringing in maybe 20% of what an experienced picker could do. This is reality; it happened and still does today. Look it up, man!
Allow me to point out that a good picker can earn up to $200.00/ day in peak season. That's better than most construction workers make in this state; the bottom line is that the work is too damn hard for most Americans, and those few who attempted it did pretty poorly.
(Right here is where some Reich-wingers start salivating: "AHA! He mentioned a matter of ethnicity, which PROVES he's a RACIST like ALL Liberals!") Oh, horsefeathers; ain't a question of race, it's a matter of experience and practice. None of those fruit pickers can plumb a high-rise like I can, either.
As for free medical care, food stamps and welfare: Dude, your information is just wrong. It's a fact that almost all proven welfare or other benefit fraud is committed by people who were born here, and should have some 'skin in the game'. The problem isn't greedy immigrants; it's f*****g LAZY AMERICANS!
Lastly, I'd be very interested to know what state you're from and what kind of work (if any!) you do. Should be very illuminating vis-a-vis your attitude about immigrants.
Peace!
Assuming there's ZERO cost involved in tracking and catching them.
Assuming there's ZERO cost involved in the court action required to produce a deportation order.
Assuming there's ZERO cost involved in the detention needed while all this takes place.
Assuming there's ZERO cost of record keeping involved in the entire operation.
Assuming there's ZERO chance people you put on a Greyhound won't just get off at the next stop.
Brilliant idea. *eye roll
Meth and heroine should be illegal too! Why are they so easy to acquire?
Leading from behind, AGAIN! Pandering in the background. All hail Obama. All of this is just a diversion from the economy, David Walker praises Obama's last quarter of 2012. 1.1% growth. Wow David are you easily impressed. Does the slowest ever recovery also excite you? Obama knows he needs a diversion. So look for him and his laser to be on something other than the economy. Just wondering if the 30 Republican Govs, think thier headed for the dustbin also?
Seems as if all the Obama supporters have all the answers, there's one missing.
Would you guys please educate us stupid folks and give us your plan or suggestions on how the collection of these so-called assault rifles, magazines and an array of other weapons will be collected from the criminals? Do you think they will just voluntarily turn them over like us law-abiding citizens?
Thanks.

Average police response time to scene of crime: 23 minutes
Average response time from barrel of 357 Magnum to criminal: 1400 feet per second.
Hi Thetotas, I have a 357 snub nose for a pocket gun when I choose to carry (which is seldom), it's not very accurate at long range, but then again if they are at long range then my life is probably not in danger. The idea of the shotgun is home defense, even Mrs. Grump who has never fired a handgun will not miss, people can miss even at close range in a self defense situation with a handgun, it's not like being at the shooting range.
@kkwilson:
The government cannot effectively disarm criminals given our other constitutional rights. The point is not to disarm criminals though, it's to disarm a would be rebellious republic.
But don't worry, criminals will soon be disarmed when our 4th ammendment rights are completely stripped for the safety of our children.
I do hope that all of you that are against Mexicans in the southwest understand that the land once belong to them until the young USA just claimed it as their own. Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, California, Nevada, all were a part of Mexico so what do you expect to happen?
Texans cry "Remember the Alamo" without realizing that the battle was lost and every man, woman, and child were killed there. Well the Mexicans came back and the businesses welcomed them with open arms but now they cry because they have to pay taxes to keep them. Go figure.
Now with the gun issue...I own many guns and my family have owned guns for generations but shutter to think what might have been if the Hatfields and McCoys had assault rifles with 100 round magazines. One family or the other would not exist today.
Atlanta news cast last evening. Fella comes home and realizes someone's in His house. Sneaks in and heads to His gun safe, then see's the safe is missing. Heads to another room to retrieve a hand gun in a drawer. Opens the drawer and finds that gun gone. Turns around and the intruder is facing Him smiling. This what you're looking for?, intruder asks, showing Him the hand gun. Homeowner nods. Intruder tells Him Its a nice gun. Warns homeowner if He makes a wrong move intruder will shoot Him. Homeowner doesn't make a wrong move and intruder leaves. Intruder takes all 17 guns previously owned by this homeowner/ militiaman. Outraged homeowner/militiaman later relates the story to local TV news.
In my area this kind of thing, generally with a shooting to boot, happens several times a week. Believing themselves to be the ultimate vanguard against tyranny, gun nuts factually, are one of the best and most dependable suppliers of weaponry to criminals.

Jeepers, I couldn't agree with you more!
Question, though: Where would you suggest we send the tens of millions of Dominionist Christians who believe that they're going to be called as God's footsoldiers in the End Times, and whose pastors are commanding them to stockpile ammo against that (imminent!) day?
I'm betting that Mexico won't take them. Maybe we should start by deporting anybody who owns the "Left Behind" series, as they clearly believe that their God commands them to do violence; but again, what country would be crazy enough to accept a large population of armed-to-the-teeth religious fanatics who are convinced that the path to salvation is to murder as many unbelievers as possible?
Utah's only so big, buddy. Give this one some thought- maybe pray on it, that's the ticket!
The US Secretary of State Historian website is filled with correspondence from Mexico to the US and US to Mexico from 1900-2000 describing how BAD illegal immigration has been for both countries. How illegal aliens from Mexico ruin business deals and both economies. Why would anyone endorse these people who use organize crime and criminals to promote their agenda?
@Mac Forrester:
Just wait until gun profits soar with the increase of the black market! We ain't seen nothing yet..
If the Senate proposal doesn't get passed it is highly unlikely that a more liberal Obama version will pass Perhaps Mr. Obama is finally learning that he needs to let all sides participate in the legislative process, rather than the grandstanding, freeze outs and demonizing he has engaged in the last 4 years.
As for the bill itself, it remains to be seen what is in it to determine its viability.
David Walker - " market efficencies have replaced jobs". How about small buisness keeps getting boned by this president, because for the simple reason they are not unionized. Small buisness not Corporate America hires vastly more workers. This is were the jobs are that are not coming back. Small buisness are cut off from loans. Where is this president with an original thought, like, encouraging banks to raise thier % from a 60% loan on equity to 90% with the government backing the difference. But the business still responsible for the loan. No, this president rather create a dependency instead of helping the backbone of America. SAD!
David Walker
Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.
Looks like I should go back to Randolph Hearst and The Spanish American War as well.
Perhaps I'll watch Citizen Kane again.
LOL.

Jason, I agree that the Repugs will never win the minority vote, but that has never been their intention. The Tea Party solution to the "Latino, black, liberal problem" isn't to win their votes. Never has been, when it's much more efficient to deny them the right to vote at all. You never hear anything about voter fraud until there's a close election when the Repugs stand to lose ground in either congress or face a bitter battle for the White House.
Wonder if any of the proposed new immigration laws apply any new reformation to those north of the border who continually lure those south of the border here for the express purposes of exploiting their poverty and ignorance? If not, these new laws aren't worth a "hill of beans".
Here is the problem with trying to deport millions of illegals, they have children that were born here and by our Constitution they are in fact US citizens, so how do you deport a US citizen? What if tou threaten the parents with deportation and they say fine but I will leave my children here because they would have a better chance at a decent life. Who is going to tear a child from the mothers arms as we deport her, but have no legal basis to deport the children who are in fact US citizens. Will we build orphanages to care for them? You going to put the parents in prison for child abandonment, then they are still here and completely on the government's dime, not to mention you would likely have to build a boatload of prisons. All an illegal with children who are legal by nature of our citizenship laws has to do when faced with deportation is say I will go but my children will stay and then what the hell do you do?

Where are the pics of AMERICANS with their signs? or is this solely from the Latino standpoint?! Seriously, what is with the name calling? Are we not all adults here?
Trust me Obama will look long and hard to find a way to blow this up, if not he is slipping. The sad thing is that its Marco Rubio may never get credit for more than half of the frame work is his. I'm glad to see, NBC reporting a statement which is 100% true, by Senator Graham last night on FOX . NBC also said that Obama "does not favor linking legal status to border security." and here is were it will blow up. Obama will have his newly form activist group pounding the war drums of unfair rights to Illegals, who the day they set foot in this country, broke the law. Is it right for Illegals to cut in front of all that came here legally, to wait another 10 years, when people broke the law get taken care of first. Obama has found a cause to start another war in congress, blame the GOP for not caving in yet again. Because that would mean, Obama would have to lead the country in the security and enforcement of our boarders. If this is not done first, you'll have another 11 million coming across, we as Americans should not put up with it any longer. Pass the bill and get to work Mr Obama, it will the first bit of work you've done, in the past 4 years.
Gump 2.0, It's simple. If I broke the law and went to jail, you think the judge gives two @!$%#s about the impact on my family? Tough! I shouldn't have broken the law. A provision says illegals can stay if they have no criminal record, which is a joke because the first thing they did when they crossed the border was break the law. Along with working "off the books" and obtaining fake ID's and SS numbers. All of which would land me in jail in a heartbeat. Repeal the "anchor baby" rule. Sorry kids, your illegal parents broke the law by coming here. Knowing full well of the possible consequences. You can go home with them and thus stay with your family, or stay here. But If you choose to stay here you are on your own. Again, sorry kids, but it's your illegal parents fault.
Couple of things KingFish, Rubio will not get credit nor should he for a plan in which most if not all of the components has been proposed for years. The president cannot pass the bill if that is what you meant he can only sign it or veto it. Lastly, what do you do with children who are US citizens if you deport the parents?
@Forrest,
Are you really asking me to care about some illegal alien lawbreaker's bambino? Those so-called mothers aren't too likely to leave their kid. And if they do,well that just proves my point, does it not? So let's go with your argument and say that the little ankle biter anchor babies are abandoned. So what? It's even easier to round them up and give 'em a one-way bus ride. Once they cross the border, who gives a kitty!
Hey Thetotas, I just thought of something you can have both a shotgun and a handgun they have a handgun about the size of your 357 that shoots 410 gauge shotgun rounds.
Hey Fiesty
Hows things in Chicago, off to a record January in shootings good job! Glad to see that all those Gang Bangers are following the Law!
Look for Obama to find a way to strip out enforcement and the guest worker provisions since he has no interest in border security and the guest worker provision is opposed by the unions. That will peel off Republican support and the measure would fail - giving Obama what he really wants - a divisive issue for the mid-term elections.
TNSEVOL
Yeah, ok. Now why don't you explain why that matters?? Tough gun laws don't work because there are several million guns out there now and no one is suggesting taking any of them away. Where the guns come from don't change the FACT that crime there is ut of control despite the worthless gun laws.
You mean that police state where they are considering putting body scanners on every corner? I think Franklin said it best- ”Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.”
If you want to live that way go for it, but I want the right to choose to live another way whether you approve of it or not!
NBC News - intentionally trying to mislead the public by showing photos of LEGAL immigrants when posting a news story about ILLEGAL immigration.
We are not legislating against naturalized, legal citizens.
NBC News - DESPERATE to forward the Obama, liberal narrative. Desperate for a permanent, dependent class of Democrat voters.
So does that mean you are ready to denounce Ronald Reagan and the republican senators who are working with democratic senators on immigration reform? Denounce Ronald Reagan NOW for his unpatriotic act of granting amnesty to illegal aliens and denounce George W. Bush for working on immigration reform...or be labeled a hypocrite.
So Obama has come out and said that securing our borders should not be a part of immigration reform. Well it appears it is already time for Obama to start moving the goalpost. What Obama needs to realize is that he doesn't write the laws, and when they come to his desk he can either sign them or use his veto power. But when you have bipartisan agreement and already Obama is trying to interfere, is he doing it for a good reason or just in the hopes he can blame Republicans if this demand derails the process? Presidents for decades have been promising to secure the borders including Obama, but he never has and it appears he doesn't see the need.
Hey Fisty, in your home state of Illinois this is exactly how the gang bangers are handling their own type of gun show in Chicago. Seems to be working well given your logic.
Now if you go out to the suburbs where Gun Shows are held regularly, non of these problems exist. Maybe the problems only exist where a lot of progressives call home.
On this date in 1979 (34 years ago) - 16-year-old Brenda Spencer killed 2 people and wounded 9 others when she opened fire with a .22-caliber hunting rifle at the entrance of Grover Cleveland Elem School because - in her own words... 'I don't like Mondays' .
If we (as a nation) had the same knee-jerk reaction to that shooting that we have had as of late, .22 cal hunting rifles would have been banned a long-long time ago.
Common sense has disappeared!
:O(
Forrest,
The line starts in the back.
Allow the people who are coming here legally to continue to go through the process, anyone here illegally, the line begins in the back. I have several friends that are either in the process to become a citizen or they are now citizens. I have much respect for them, its a long road, but they feel its worth it. Like President Obama said, we must do the right thing, and be fair.
Sandie - what a revolting excuse for a human being you are. Can you think of other degrading remarks to make about children? What are you - 5 years old with a mother who didn't teach you any better?
And while you screech against President Obama remember that Reagan gave amnesty to millions when he was President.
Feisty - sent you an e-mail!
Q22
More have been deported during his first term than they were in the preceding two terms.
He gets the benefit of playing both sides. Even easier to drive a wedge that way, by saying you want to reform it and at the same time doing record deportation.
doesnt sound the same. then use a flare gun LOL... you tried Forrest.
you're right, they are citizens. the children arent deported the parents are. the children would have to go with them or into Foster care. Sorry but this is something that was created because of the 14th amendment. However that doesnt mean if you are illegally here and have kids, you get to stay nor should you. Why do we as a nation have to continue to reward poor choice and negative behavior? So why does Grigori from ALbania have to wait 8 years and go through the proper channels to come here but Paco can just cross a dry river bed with Maria have a kid Tucson and call it good. Kinda fvcked up pathway to citizenship if you ask me
Backhouse Original post
The shooting took place over 9 minutes, not 2 minutes.
To give you an idea how outrageous your comment is, it takes 2 - 3 seconds to point and click the mouse on a computer on a stationary location (according to microsoft). It takes longer with a gun for any real accuracy on a moving target. The math alone says what you claim to be impossible.
Furthermore, The preliminary Autopsy report said "most", not "all", were probably shot with a rifle. The final autopsy report is due out which will clarify what was and wasn't fired from the rifle.
So Sandie and Pete you will change our Constitution to deny citizenship to those born on US soil, are you going to make that retroactive, because then Marco Rubio will be stripped of his senate seat, as he would no longer be a US citizen, and many more Americans will no longer be US citizens, because they were born here of parents who were not yet citizens. Are you going to tell me it will only apply to those that came here illegally, are you going to have 11 million court cases and investigations to determine that. The children born here are US citizens, that is a fact, and we have no legal provision to deport US citizens, and the states do have an obligation to care for indigent or orphaned children. If we find a way to conveniently deport those US citizens than who else can we retroactively revoke citizenship on, and deport. Like I said that is part of why Ronald Reagen was the first President in history to grant amnesty to 11 million illegals. I think the nation would be surprised how many people would leave their children here in hopes of a better life for them, if they had any hope of a decent life where they came from, or if they could afford the time and money to immigrate here legally, they would not take such a desperate measure as becoming illegal aliens. Now be serious and tell me what do you do with millions of innocent children who are legal US citizens. Please don't tell me something silly like we will punish them for the crimes of the parents, we don't do that either, we don't put the children of bank robbers in prison, we have no provision in our Constitution to punish innocent family members for the crimes of another family member, don't be silly now, give us some feasible ideas.
Caesar Augustus-
You know exactly the real reason Grigori doesn't have the leg up: He doesn't have the benefit of a quick, cheap passage across and a quick return home if he's caught. It's going to cost him far more to come over illegally than Paco per your example. He can either do it correctly and expensively or do it illegally and expensively.
The problem I keep seeing with immigration is that it's a bunch of 'zero sum' attitudes. Either we make everyone here a citizen or we send them all home.
My family has gone through the immigration process, and as a result of that, I am far less than tolerant of illegal immigration. I don't believe people should get put to the front of the line for being here illegally. Being here and working on a "pathway to citizenship" while getting to stay here is preferential treatment. On the other hand, we can't just deport every one that we find.
We do need to find some common ground, but I don't think that a better pathway to citizenship for those who are already here is the right idea. I don't want to see immigration be something we largely ignore for 30 years, throw out a blanket solution, and then ignore it for another 30 years.
No true. More have been deported in his first term compared to Bush's first term but over 8 years Bush has deported more.
Also - as is the case with Obama - he is taking credit for a programs to focus deportations on fugitives and coordinating with local authorities that were initiated by the Bush administration.
What happened that FiestyRedhead the fat pig wasnt the first to post. Feisty is an expert on everything, just ask the hog jawed he/she.
Q22
That's an error on my part. It's more per month.
He also is taking credit for that, but then again, we tend to assign blame and credit to the President whether deserving or not.
In this case he gets to sit on both sides of the fence. It's unfortunate that our lack of attention to immigration and border enforcement has to reach critical mass before we decide to do something about it. Apparently "enforce immigration laws we have already written" isn't a solution.
Repojam, you're preaching to the choir. the whole idea of immigration reform is because of our southern neighbor and pandering for votes. Until our Reps want to be adults and tackle issues instead of meaningless platitudes and empty gestures, we will continue to go the way of Rome. Apathy is a poor excuse. Same goes for our Economic situation in the US. Poorest form of reality TV isnt Survivor, its the US government
Caesar Disgustus:
What kind of rewards did you get that makes you act like a jerk? We should definitely stop rewarding your racist rants.
For your information, illegal immigrants come from all over the world. They just nabbed 15 Israelis here in Houston working illegally in a shopping mall.
Most people who come here illegally do so to do hard work that lazy bums like you wouldn't touch.
Naw. Likewise, I could care less about your brood of @!$%#ty little bastards hanging around your ankles and stuck to the end of your tits. The only thing those sniveling rug-rats have in common is their low-life breeder mommie, and the fact they all have different daddies. Of course, when you factor in that their daddies are mommies brothers, cousins, dad an grandad, we could say they have a lot in common. Perhaps we will all get lucky and the state will remove them from their sorry existence before they start further inbreeding.
@ Thetotas, I don't disagree that the line starts in the back and people should follow the legal procedure, but the fact remains they are here and have children who are US citizens, so again how do you deport a US citizen, we can deport the parents but then are we going to build the orphanages necessary to care for the children if the parents choose for them to stay. Even if the children go, they can return any time they choose in the future because they are in fact US citizens.
@ Caesar, no it is not a 12 gauge, but it shoots a 3 1/2 inch 410 shotgun shell likely lethal at close range if using number 4 shot or larger, and in any event you will not miss and will put a hell of a hurt on a would be attacker, or with number 8 or 9 shot several attackers at once, nice gun for many who do not wish to become marksman at a range, or anybody scared out of their wits when faced with an attacker. It beats the hell out of your flare gun or pepper spray.
Caution: Pathetic Apologist At Work.
It takes less than a second to point and click a mouse. It takes a second at most to repeat fire a semi-automatic weapon.

In general, Re Immigration:
The only fault in the proposal so far is the idea that a panel of southwest governors could impede implementation until they deem the boarder secure. It will never be secure enough for freaks like Brewer. Otherwise the plan is reasonable and should be passed.
For those of you that think if they give amnesty to this group that is here now that there will NOT be anymore ILLEGALS coming across so they can be in the next AMNESTY program.
Look back when Reagan had the amnesty program. Then look at all of them that came across just waiting for this one. Then we will get more waiting for the next one. It will NEVER end till we quit giving in to these ILLEGALS.
What about those that have been in LINE waiting to come here LEGALLY, how are they going to feel, like they just got $HIT on by this president. Great job destroy the hopes of others by letting the ILLEGALS have a FREE RIDE.
Repojam
The Republicans are the ones demanding that nothing can be done about immigration reform without border security being part of the reform. Obama is making the borders more secure. So that's a problem? No matter what Obama does, he'll get attacked for it by people who just resent the fact he's president.
Houston!
Of course the opposite is also true. No matter what Obama does, he'll be defended for it by people who are overjoyed by the fact that he is President. Frankly, these sorts of people are a MUCH bigger problem and yes, Bush had many of these types of supporters also.
Blind faith in a political leader should scare the hell out of anyone as it basically gives them free reign to do whatever they want. I stood next to many libs bitching about Bush but now that Obama is doing some of the same @!$%# most of those people have faded into the background.
The more legal mexicans the more money for the tax and spend lberals to blow!!!!! I'll bet the people who had to work hard and study are real happy that obama and harry ried are just gonna hand out citizenship to a bunch of dumb fu(ks that can't or won't even try to learn english!@!!! They should get citizenship the same way everyone else had to. Work for it, go thru the system. Thier bringing thier lazy ass habits to our country. We already have a bunch of lazy welfare democrats sucking the life out of the country now. They just want more for the votes!!!!!!!!!!! Leave it to the democrats to destroy our country!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't know what you're talking about. I've seen PLENTY of criticism of Obama from progressives over his tough deportation policies and also over his use of drones. of his drone Being glad that he's president doesn't mean that being glad about everything he does.
Houston!
He'll get attacked just for being a Democrat, but that's honestly beside the point from my point of view. I haven't been pleased with how many illegal immigrants we've had over the years regardless of who was President.
The fact that we are at over 10 million illegal immigrants isn't something that personally sits well with me. I don't see a problem with requesting the new way that we handle it include more border security.
If We DONT WAKE UP SOON, Here's the New National Anthem, Of The United Socialist State Of Obama http://youtu.be/le98mWhP_IY
Sorry Gump, Sadly, most of these kids won't become another Marco Rubio. Most of them won't go anywhere except into a life of poverty and dependence. Never learning English, finishing school or getting a decent job. A sad and cruel product of their parents using them only as a way to stay in the country and never giving them encouragement to assimilate or succeed. Like many welfare recipients selfishly do with popping out five or more kids just to collect more benefits and the poor kids wind up out on the street, becoming burdens on society. If most of these people truly wanted a better life for themselves and their kids, they would aim more towards following and respecting the laws we already have set in place, learning English and becoming good Americans instead of demanding a free pass all the time and risking the lives and safety of themselves and their kids. As well as the contempt and wrath of law abiding native born and legally immigrated Americans. It's an emotional subject for sure, but it simply comes down to legal and illegal, right and wrong.
Fixing illegal immigration is easy.
1. Give their employers hefty fines for hiring illegals.
2. Do not give illegals any public or health assistance.
Done!
Well Tim you have no clue about lazy ass habits, I just recently did a project in Mexico, I supervise extremely technical work in automated high speed production plants. I was provided with an all Mexican crew, a driver and an interpreter, the level of technical expertise, and the work ethic of that crew was astounding, not to mention it was the cleanest industrial manufacturing plant I have ever been in bar none. I do what I do all over the United States and now have to travel aboard as well. It honestly pains me to say this but the truth is I have had crews in SC, NC, VA and many other states in the US that could not hold a candle to the crew of young men I worked with and directed at this plant in Mexico, they were superior in by way of technical expertise, mastery of their craft, and their willingness to work hard, to ply their craft. I actually wish I could say otherwise, but the truth is the truth, these were some seriously talented young men.
Reagan stepped up and admitted that amnesty was one of the worst mistakes of his presidency.
Bush working on amnesty was one of the MANY reasons I didn't vote for him the second time.
It's one of the many nice things about being an independent. I don't feel the need to fall into party lines.
I just recently did a project in Mexico, I supervise extremely technical work in automated high speed production plants.
There's a big difference between the mexicans in mexico and the illegals up here. I've worked with illegals in plywood mills and in a vineyard. In the plywood mill, they would crawl up on stacks of veneer and sleep the shift away. In the vineyard, their speed was just this side of a full stop.
What amazes me is; Obama suddenly makes immigration a priority and within two weeks the Senate gets bipartisan approval on a bill. Meanwhile, the Harry Reid Senate after 4 years still will not vote or even discuss a budget.
how am I racist? what specific rant where i was racist? Since you wont find it because it doesnt exist you can now go fvck yourself. Goodday
no shlt, i think you didnt understand my point of how much more of an illegal immigrant problem we have is because of our Southern border. If that makes me racist then guilty as charged, although it makes you fvcking idiot.
FACT O MATTER HOUSTON (WHO HAS MANY PROBLEMS) THE HISPANICS ARE THE BIGGEST IMMIGRATION ISSUE DUE TO LOCATION.
Tired of people like you labeling everyone a racist
While the NRA and the GOP are trying to blame the gun issue on mental health care and the lack of in the USA, they are in the House Gop right now trying to do away with health care for the poor and middle class. Seems odd that they would blame the lack of mental health care for the shootings while on the other hand trying to get rid of peoples health care.
HMMM.......
Well, of course you're an independent, just like a mouse is a giraffe.
I am right of center, but I do not align with the republican party. Not really sure why I'm trying to explain personal choice to an individual with a single digit IQ.
Go chew your cud inbred.
There is this assumption that all people entering this country are poor Mexicans and even though they are the majority of the problem they are not the whole story. I live in South Florida and I have a Colombian wife who entered here legally but there are many people who come from countries to attend University here, graduate and want to start businesses but are not able to. These people take no money from the government and actually add to the economy but they have no way of staying.
If you look at the situation in Venezuela due to it now being a socialist country people with money cannot return and want to move here and be productive but cannot. In Colombia it takes two years to get an appointment with the embassy to begin a visa processes. Educated people from Ireland, France, Spain want to move here and start businesses but cannot, so allowing the educated in will create jobs for Americans as these people have money to invest.
Okay Pete you gave me your very optimistic opinion of what you think these kids will make of themselves and the same can be said of a large percentage of any kid born in America. But you completely sidestepped my question as what do you propose to do about your wish to deport the parents, and then what do you do with the children who are US citizens. By the way have you ever been to a border town in TX, I have and everywhere I went from the hotel to the restaurants to the drugstore, to the K-Mart, they were staffed with teenage kids (and older) obviously of Mexican heritage who spoke both English and Spanish fluently, and were neat, clean, helpful, bright, and courteous while they earned their money. I will tell you something else I liked, I did not see a single one who had a bunch of goofy tattoos or looked liked they fell in my tackle box with those even more goofy piercings. I am much more optimistic about their future because I have seen them in real life not just what some may see on the news about gangs in LA. They are American kids Pete, they have all the same potential any American kid has and from what I have seen personally they seem to take much better advantage of it than you give them credit for.
The political battle is not over immigration policy; it is only about who gets to declare victory and spin this into a pitch to latino voters, and that's a fight that could still pull this tenuous alliance apart. Either side could kill it if it looks for a moment like the other guys are going to come out on top.
Democrats have the advantage here, because they can play it either way. If reform dies because of Republican opposition, that solidifies their coalition. If reform goes through, they can twist the knife by bragging about how they got the Republicans to vote for things their base hates. The Republicans have a much narrower path, trying to paint immigration reform as the legacy of Reagan and Bush without ticking off the tea partiers, and laying all the blame for their own inaction and obstruction on the Democrats using the issue politically. It doesn't really stand up to scrutiny, but it's all they've got.
3,767 children die every day at the hands of their would-be mothers, and there are 1,375,000 abortions in America every year. By continuing their concrete actions in Washington, we'll demonstrate our commitment to injustice.
Where's the outrage?
And here is the majority of the reasoning behind having an abortion.
The number of abortions due to rape and incest, are indeed necessary, but they are a clear minority, as they should be.
Next time you think about your right to choose, think about choosing the life of the child, think about choosing the couple who would be happy to take care of your child for you, think about the couple that has infertility issues and is incapable of having their own child, think about the homosexual couples who are incapable of producing their own children but would love to take care of yours!
According to UNICEF...24,000 children die everyday around the world simply because they were born into poverty.
Where's the outrage?
Hispanics accounted for 10% of the 127 million overall votes in 2012, and Obama's 44% margin of victory among Hispanics gave him a 5.6 million vote edge.
Since Obama won overall by only 4.9 million votes, everyone else voted for Romney by about 700,000 votes.
I guess 'pandering' to Hispanics worked pretty well.
What I find humorous is that most of the 'new' provisions in the 'new' immigration bill are the same ones that were included in the 'old' immigration bill passed in 1986 and signed by Reagan.
Since all of those 'old' provisions were merely ignored, but about 3 million illegal immigrants were 'legalized' in 1986, what makes anybody think that the same 'new' provisions will not just be ignored as well, and this time another 12 million illegal immigrants will be 'legalized', and we will go through this process again in another generation, with another 30 million the next time.
Here were some of the provisions in the 'old' law from 1986, and a link;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_Reform_and_Control_Act_of_1986
I will give you this much Roy the Hispanic vote is seriously important, that is why you suddenly see republicans doing a 180 and offering amnesty, it worked for their hero Reagan. As you said I guess 'pandering' to Hispanics worked pretty well. So well the republicans want in on it big time, they are real busy right now trying to figure out a way to make it sound like it is all their idea, again.
Caesar Disgustus:
I don't think you understand that if it wasn't for the illegal immigrant farm laborers you're ranting against, you wouldn't have enough food to feed your fat face. Every time some state decides to "get tough" on illegals, the immigrant start leaving and the crops rot in the fields. If you're going to rant, then rant at the businesses that hire them.
Yeah Odumbo let them all in-there isn't room in one country for the whole world to live in. Odumbo just made a stupid comment on TV-"The Indians were the only ones here that were Americans, the rest of us were brought here." Really, I wasn't brought here, I was born here just as my parents were. When America was born, the people who came here, discovered it, fought for it became the first Americans along with the Indians. From there on out, those who were born here did not come from somewhere else, they came from here. Odumbo doesn't seem to know to much about the history of this country and how it was born-but then again what can you expect from a community organizer.
Repojam
It's not something I lose any sleep over. Once the "illegal immigrant problem" is solved, the prices for food and other things will be significantly higher than they are now, but not nearly as high as if the undocumented immigrants were all rejected at once and most of the crops rotted in the fields with no "illegal immigrants" to pick them for your consumption.
TheDougler960608
An acorn isn't an oak tree and a fertilized egg isn't a "child." Even the ultraconservative voters of Mississippi overwhelmingly rejected the fast and loose definition of what constitutes a person when they got a chance to vote on it.
I'll ask this.
If something has a heart beat...is it alive?
I really could careless what voters of Mississippi have to say about anything.
My main point is that abortions happen in huge numbers, yet no one takes issue to it. And it's not because of rape or incest, or even the life of the mother that makes up the majority of the reasons why women have had abortions. People deciding to end a potential life, simply because they can't afford it, isn't exactly a good reason to me to have an abortion.
My secondary point was, when considering an abortion, consider those people who would be happy to take care of that potential life, think about the couples with infertility issues who are incapable of creating their own children, and think about the homosexual couples whom by their nature will never be able to reproduce children of their own.

Thanks for the little bit of history. The story that I had always heard was that Rush Limbaugh "came into existence" when Morton Downey, Jr. had his way with a female water buffalo.
And even though it was assumed to have been "a legitimate rape", as hard as the water buffalo tried she wasn't able to "shut that whole thing down." So, about 10-11 months later Rush "dropped" into this world... right onto his big fat, bloated head!
And given his paternity, Rush was already blustering with divisive polemics as he emerged from the birth canal ( ... and the rumor is that he was already spewing vitriol about "liberal bias" before his head even contacted the ground).
Cheers!
PS. Love the Gary Owens Avatar. It sure brings back fun memories of the 70's, and "Beautiful downtown Burbank."
Houston!
Please point out where I said it was true of ALL those who support him?? Because surly you aren't suggesting that none of them blindly follow his lead?? If so perhaps you could explain why so many of them bitched about GWB but ignore the same things from Obama. His utter lack of transparency being an excellent example. Can't say that I've heard a single progressive complaining about that in the last 4 years.
Another example of an anchor baby. How nice!!
Mr Gump, I too have seen many good people and their kids in the immigrant community. Many are, just like you said. Smart, hard working, courteous etc. Many of them (probably to your surprise) are my good friends. They are the sweetest, nicest people you would ever want to know. But I live near an area that also sees the down side of all of this. A place where sadly, their currently is little, if any hope. Run-down neighborhoods rampant with crime, blight and high unemployment. Many of these people are stuck, with nowhere to go. They came here for a better life and found nothing. They came to same place they left, only with indoor plumbing.
Perhaps I jumped the gun saying they all should be deported, They shouldn't. If that happened, two of my friends who are currently waiting for their paperwork to finish, would probably be going with them. But where do we draw the line? We already have enough of our own stateside born people that we cant take care of without being flooded with more needy people. And yes, a lot of them are in fact poorly educated and needy. (And we sure have enough of our own in that department ) And it must be a terrible place that they left for so many to risk their lives to come here.
You are correct sir, I don't have an answer. Just an opinion (maybe a skewed one ) about a problem that even these overpaid, overblown lawmakers and their new policies still don't know how to fix. We can't fix it, or any of the world's problems here on this forum either. Maybe the world would be a better place if we could. Or maybe it wouldn't.... :(

A tadpole has a heartbeat. Is it a person? It's not even a frog.
Backcountry164
So, what's Obama covering up that you want to know? He's released his birth certificate.
You sound much more reasonable now Pete, and BTW it is Grump not Gump, yes there are no easy answers. I agree about how terrible it must be to leave your home and go to a place where you do not know anybody, do not speak the language, and have nothing but the hope that somehow it could be better. I think of my grandparents who crossed an ocean and came to strange place with only the thought that it could not be worse than where they were, it is a pretty desperate move. I am only the second generation of my family born here, all four of my grandparents were immigrants. They did not sneak across a land border but I don't know if they all had the right papers and documentation either, one way or the other they were granted entrance, and did in fact make a better life for themselves and added value to the nation. I do not condone entering illegally, but the fact that the kids born here are US citizens, makes mass deportations a tough nut to crack. I will say that giving these people some sort of legal status even if only temporally to give them a chance to gain their citizenship would allow the government to document them give them a valid ID, and possibly a SS number, collect taxes from them, and let them come out from the shadows to have a better chance to gain that better life for themselves and their children. By keeping them in limbo and scared of the government it probably prevents them from becoming the better citizens most of them dream of becoming, and that we wish them to become. There are no easy answers, and we do need to protect our borders, but mass deportation does not seem to be a workable solution either, in any event punishing the children for the actions of the parents is Un-American. Now I will tell you a funny story about my grandfather, on my fathers side, the day he and a friend made their citizenship, they left the courthouse and they were very proud and happy, they went to a saloon to have a celebratory toast, which led to more toasts, which led to the two newly minted Americans directing traffic at a busy city intersection as if they had the authority to so, they spent the rest of the afternoon at the local police station drinking coffee, until they were sober enough to be sent home.
So that's your argument? A tadpole isn't a person.
Thanks for clearing that up genius.
TheDougler960608
It doesn't take a genius to understand that the presence of a heartbeat is an extremely stupid way to define a "child." Too bad for you if you can't understand that.
I actually don't see the problem with so-called "amnesty." What's wrong with letting more people into our borders??? I mean, we're a nation of @!$%#ing immigrants, for pete's sake. Acting all nationalistic and xenophobic just like our forefathers doesn't help. And please, don't tell me that we are beyond xenophobic. I know of at least two comments on this vine that sound damn near close to xenophobic.
Now, as the son of an immigrant (legal, for your information), I greatly sympathize with the plight of all immigrants, legal or illegal, trying to get into this country. I'd assume all of you would do so, as you are also the descendants of immigrants. And I find it intriguing how many white Americans who oppose "amnesty" and illegal immigrants are direct descendants of illegal immigrants; their European forefathers who came here illegally and invaded the lands of the Native Americans (not being anti-white, truth is I supported the cowboys over the Indians). But either way, immigrants are an integral part of this nation. While I don't entirely agree with the concept that business owners are what we call "job creators," immigrants are more likely to start businesses here in the United States, which boosts the economy. And look at our economic rivals around the world; they are investing heavily in education and innovation (just like we used to do). Now, we cannot entirely make up for the past few decades of under-investment, but the best way we can go forward is expand our HB-1 visa program. If you don't want amnesty and want to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country, my advice is to go back in history and see how deportations have fared in the past, particularly when Adolf Hitler tried to do that with the Jews in Nazi-Occupied Europe.
So if functions that are a fact of life, aren't the basis of life for you....then what is?
I wasn't defining "child" on the presence of a heartbeat, I was defining life as such.
Simply because a being can or can't function autonomously, doesn't make a life. If that's your reference for what makes a life, then a war veteran that had all his limbs taken from him is no longer a life, as he can't function autonomously.
So how do you define life?
Houston!
So liberals and progressives spent 8 years crying and whining about GWB's lack of transparency and now they say nothing even though their guy is far worse. I'm a little surprised that you'd admit that was too much for you to grasp.
I could give a @!$%# about his birth certificate. What I want to know is why he won't tell us who was in the WH during the health care discussions. I want to know why he promised to have that debate live on C-Span but then did it all on AOL's private servers which are exempt from the Freedom of Information Act. No way in hell progressives would have allowed that to go unnoticed or unchallenged under Bush; in fact they'd still be bitching about it today if he had tried.
The Secret History of Guns
The Ku Klux Klan, Ronald Reagan, and, for most of its history, the NRA all worked to control guns. The Founding Fathers? They required gun ownership—and regulated it. And no group has more fiercely advocated the right to bear loaded weapons in public than the Black Panthers—the true pioneers of the modern pro-gun movement. In the battle over gun rights in America, both sides have distorted history and the law, and there’s no resolution in sight.
By Adam Winkler
The 24 men and six women climbed the capitol steps, and one man, Bobby Seale, began to read from a prepared statement. “The American people in general and the black people in particular,”he announced, must
take careful note of the racist California legislature aimed at keeping the black people disarmed and powerless Black people have begged, prayed, petitioned, demonstrated, and everything else to get the racist power structure of America to right the wrongs which have historically been perpetuated against black people The time has come for black people to arm themselves against this terror before it is too late.
Seale then turned to the others.“All right, brothers, come on. We’re going inside.” He opened the door, and the radicals walked straight into the state’s most important government building, loaded guns in hand. No metal detectors stood in their way.
It was May 2, 1967, and the Black Panthers’ invasion of the California statehouse launched the modern gun-rights movement.
Republicans in California eagerly supported increased gun control. Governor Reagan told reporters that afternoon that he saw “no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons.” He called guns a “ridiculous way to solve problems that have to be solved among people of good will.” In a later press conference, Reagan said he didn’t “know of any sportsman who leaves his home with a gun to go out into the field to hunt or for target shooting who carries that gun loaded.” The Mulford Act, he said, “would work no hardship on the honest citizen.”
A 1968 federal report blamed the unrest at least partly on the easy availability of guns. Because rioters used guns to keep law enforcement at bay, the report’s authors asserted that a recent spike in firearms sales and permit applications was “directly related to the actuality and prospect of civil disorders.” They drew “the firm conclusion that effective firearms controls are an essential contribution to domestic peace and tranquility.”
Political will in Congress reached the critical point around this time. In April of 1968, James Earl Ray, a virulent racist, used a Remington Gamemaster deer rifle to kill Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. King’s assassination—and the sniper fire faced by police trying to quell the resulting riots—gave gun-control advocates a vivid argument. Two months later, a man wielding a .22-caliber Iver Johnson Cadet revolver shot Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles. The very next day, Congress passed the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, the first federal gun-control law in 30 years. Months later, the Gun Control Act of 1968 amended and enlarged it.
Together, these laws greatly expanded the federal licensing system for gun dealers and clarified which people—including anyone previously convicted of a felony, the mentally ill, illegal-drug users, and minors—were not allowed to own firearms.

Just a thought
If it was good enough for the Black Panthers why is it suddenly not suitable For the Aryan Nation?
Or maybe it is and you’ll Yahoo’s just don’t want to admit it.
Floyd,
Your determination and dedication to keeping this front & center is AWESOME!
There are lox & bagels in the break room, ya'll help yourself! ☺
What an interesting story IR. Back then, the safety of citizens was our government's priority.
The NRA's balance sheet now takes precedence. And gun nuts who are afraid that the government is coming for them. Freedom they call it. For them anyway.
Too sad for words. Just too sad.
Pat and Betty You'll know me. Ain't worth doing if you can't do it right.
Funniest damned thing, IR. I grew up in California - spent most of my life there. When I was a kid, you could go into an Army-Navy surplus store and find honest-to-goodness Army-Navy surplus items, right down to just about any kind of firearm you might want. Floors were covered with boxes of rifles. I even bought one of the infamous Mannlicher-Carcano's there. $12.99. (I still don't believe a single gunman could have been behind the Kennedy murder because of that.)
Anyway, something happened back around that time. Maybe it was Viet Nam. Maybe it was the continued crowding of cities. Maybe it was the rise of Black Panthers, the riots. Hell, maybe it's even the preservatives we use in our foods. Fact is, gun violence is real and we have to find a way to deal with this. We have to figure this out, and giving everyone guns just isn't the answer.
Just as I'm desperate to see reasonable Republicans take back their party and purge the right-wing extremists, so am I desperate to see reasonable N.R.A. members take control of their organization. CEO and tough-talking draft-dodger Wayne LaPierre, drama queen Keene, and idiots like draft-dodging, pants-crapping punk Ted Nugent have got to go.
In raw numbers, it seems as though there's tens of millions of these rabid pry'em-from-my-cold-dead-hands types. Not really. Most of these "patriots" seemed to avoid the military like the plague. Many more of them seem to need mounds of rounds because they can't hit a damned target. The fact is they make a lot of noise. That's it.
The vast majority of us ask nothing more than responsible firearms ownership. That's NOT an unreasonable request. I can't get past the notion that my right to move freely trumps an idiot's right to own a gun.
IR, my friend, you are fighting the good fight. I'm mighty pleased to stand with you.
IR,
That is just a great story--I had completely forgotten about that incident. It all depends who has the guns, doesn't it?
Great post IR. Funny how simply changing the players from radical Black Panthers to patriots "watering the tree of Liberty" makes the unacceptable then acceptable now.
As with all things Conservative the only thing that matters is the marketing.
The vast majority of us ask nothing more than responsible firearms ownership.
The vast majority of us want the same thing. But it's hard to trust liberals (so much distrust in politics) because if obama's plan goes through (which I support) then it's the start on a possible slippery slope. Especially when you have whack jobs like holder and feinstein who have publicly stated they want all guns out of the hands of citizens. You have bloomberg who wants to disarm everyone but won't get rid of the guns that surround him. You have the UN stepping in and clinton signing deals with them about exports (another slippery slope) when the UN has stated that the citizens of the US need to be disarmed.
But, nice deflection in an article about illegal aliens.
Maybe someone should educate Obama on the correlation between high unemployment and a rise in crime. It is amazing that the smartest person to ever sit in the Oval Office hasn't figured that out on his own. Lucky for us, Obama has a laser focus on jobs and the economy. Sorry, that was his first term promise, so never mind.
Al right AlexM we're making progress. Why can't ( other than a distrust for liberals which I ain't contrary to popular belief) we set down and figger this thing out to every bodies satisfaction and quit with the Mythology that surrounds it. I'm sure that once we get something in place there are a lot of people like you and me to keep Our Government from skiing out of control in the black diamonds.
IR: You brought back some high school memories. They have been hidden in my mind behind all of the right wing actions of today.
Your post once again are so informative.
Thank you.
Please feel free to place a big sign on your lawn proclaiming your home a gun free zone.
Hola Soy Latino
My parents came here L E G A L L Y!
So please stop the spin and stop calling this "reform" it is amnesty.
They are not changing the procedure for those in other countries to come here.
They are granting AMNESTY to those who are already here ILLEGALLY.
Now there is no logistical way the illegals of LA, or Phx or El Paso could be deported there are way too many and you would have violence and rioting it would be like a mini wars throughout the SW.
Now is it right that millions of individuals that saw BREAKING THE LAW as a legitimate means to an end be rewarded?
And what will that individual's outlook towards future laws be?
Compound the issue even further with this tidbit:
My son is Mexican American he moved out of state he must live and work there for 1 year before he can attend the university at the in state tuition rate. Any illegal from Hermosillo, Mexico etc etc will be receiving in state tuition.
who is the dreamer now?
This is one of the basic problems with our nation
"We reward those that side step or break the law.
And when we do that those that do put forth the effort to do things the RIGHT way they are made to appear and feel to have wasted their time and efforts as fools.
AlexM-
The 'slippery slope' argument is a little hard for me to accept as a reason to avoid sensible measures. Reagan signed a ban on machine guns and automatic weapons, was that the start of a 'slippery slope'? Is a ban on flame-throwers and tanks the start of a 'slippery slope'?
As long as there is a divided Congress there will have to be a bipartisan compromise on gun control, and neither side can have their way. The few politicians who support a full ban on guns will never have enough votes to make it happen.
Face it, if the nation ever got to the point where there were enough votes to amend the constitution and ban all guns (which I don't support), it wouldn't matter what legislation had already passed.
I'm sure that once we get something in place there are a lot of people like you and me to keep Our Government from skiing out of control in the black diamonds.
Regrettably the majority of the people in this country are on the extreme sides of this issue, not enough of us in the middle. I know people in my town that are completely anti-gun anywhere/anyhow. I also know a bunch of guys that went down and back ordered ar15s as soon as this hit the news in a big way.
The problem with this is how it was marketed by the government. I honestly don't believe that banning these so called 'assault' weapons (which they really aren't) is going to solve anything.
If the government had just quietly put forth some of the rules they're talking about such as background checks at gun shows, more oversight on the mentally ill, etc, I don't think this would've been blown up so big. Those are the kind of laws that any sane person can agree with.
The problem is we had the extremists from both sides come forward. In the left corner we have holder/feinstein <liberals roar and cheer>. In the right corner we have the NRA/Nugent <conservatives roar and cheer>. In the middle we have a bunch of people thinking WTF!!!!!
All blown way out of proportion, no happy solution now that most can agree on. I pretty much say put forth the executive orders (you liberals here can mark it on the calendar that I actually agreed with obama) and let it rest.
Face it, if the nation ever got to the point where there were enough votes to amend the constitution and ban all guns (which I don't support), it wouldn't matter what legislation had already passed.
Excellent point.
IR...thanks for the link to the article. Interesting reading. As good a writer as the author is, he apparently is not well researched.
He states: "The text of the Second Amendment is maddeningly ambiguous." As much as liberals would like this to be true, nothing could be further from the truth. Here is a piece from grammar experts that makes the authors statement categorically false:
American Usage and Style: The Consensus. Here's what he has to say:
[Copperud:] "The words 'A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state,' contrary to the interpretation cited in your letter of July 26, 1991, constitutes a present participle, rather than a clause. It is used as an adjective, modifying 'militia,' which is followed by the main clause of the sentence (subject 'the right', verb 'shall'). The right to keep and bear arms is asserted as an essential for maintaining a militia.
"In reply to your numbered questions:
[Schulman:] "(1) Can the sentence be interpreted to grant the right to keep and bear arms solely to 'a well-regulated militia'?"
[Copperud:] "(1) The sentence does not restrict the right to keep and bear arms, nor does it state or imply possession of the right elsewhere or by others than the people; it simply makes a positive statement with respect to a right of the people."
[Schulman:] "(2) Is 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms' granted by the words of the Second Amendment, or does the Second Amendment assume a preexisting right of the people to keep and bear arms, and merely state that such right 'shall not be infringed'?"
[Copperud:] "(2) The right is not granted by the amendment; its existence is assumed. The thrust of the sentence is that the right shall be preserved inviolate for the sake of ensuring a militia."
[Schulman:] "(3) Is the right of the people to keep and bear arms conditioned upon whether or not a well regulated militia, is, in fact necessary to the security of a free State, and if that condition is not existing, is the statement 'the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed' null and void?"
[Copperud:] "(3) No such condition is expressed or implied. The right to keep and bear arms is not said by the amendment to depend on the existence of a militia. No condition is stated or implied as to the relation of the right to keep and bear arms and to the necessity of a well-regulated militia as a requisite to the security of a free state. The right to keep and bear arms is deemed unconditional by the entire sentence."
[Schulman:] "(4) Does the clause 'A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,' grant a right to the government to place conditions on the 'right of the people to keep and bear arms,' or is such right deemed unconditional by the meaning of the entire sentence?"
[Copperud:] "(4) The right is assumed to exist and to be unconditional, as previously stated. It is invoked here specifically for the sake of the militia."
[Schulman:] "(5) Which of the following does the phrase 'well-regulated militia' mean: 'well-equipped', 'well-organized,' 'well-drilled,' 'well-educated,' or 'subject to regulations of a superior authority'?"
[Copperud:] "(5) The phrase means 'subject to regulations of a superior authority;' this accords with the desire of the writers for civilian control over the military."
[Schulman:] "(6) (If at all possible, I would ask you to take account the changed meanings of words, or usage, since that sentence was written 200 years ago, but not take into account historical interpretations of the intents of the authors, unless those issues can be clearly separated."
[Copperud:] "To the best of my knowledge, there has been no change in the meaning of words or in usage that would affect the meaning of the amendment. If it were written today, it might be put: "Since a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be abridged.'
[Schulman:] "As a 'scientific control' on this analysis, I would also appreciate it if you could compare your analysis of the text of the Second Amendment to the following sentence,
"A well-schooled electorate, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and read Books, shall not be infringed.'
"My questions for the usage analysis of this sentence would be,
"(1) Is the grammatical structure and usage of this sentence and the way the words modify each other, identical to the Second Amendment's sentence?; and
"(2) Could this sentence be interpreted to restrict 'the right of the people to keep and read Books' only to 'a well-educated electorate' — for example, registered voters with a high-school diploma?"
[Copperud:] "(1) Your 'scientific control' sentence precisely parallels the amendment in grammatical structure.
"(2) There is nothing in your sentence that either indicates or implies the possibility of a restricted interpretation."
Professor Copperud had only one additional comment, which he placed in his cover letter: "With well-known human curiosity, I made some speculative efforts to decide how the material might be used, but was unable to reach any conclusion."

I have no issues with people coming to America to become AMERICANS.... bring your food, you festivals, your culture..... leave your old country at home...... do not immigrate to the United States to create the same country you just left.... this is AMERICA...... become an AMERICAN...........
Victor...see comment 1.58 above. Obama doesn't care about Hispanics.
Alex,
Another great example of a crazy nut with all RANT and no Substance. Hard to trust liberals, so I guess its a great thing to trust Conservatives, right. 1 sided thinking will get you a long way. I'm glad the majority in this country don't think like this guy.
So hs, who is "The Constitution Society" and why are we to believe that a conversation from their site between two people named Schulman and Copperud is in any way accurate, let alone the last word on the subject?
Excellent post IR. Since last weekend, the awful count of gun deaths since Newtown is now 1317, that's 96 in ONE week.
Yesterday during a sub-committee meeting in Hartford CT, one of the fathers of the Newtown victims was heckled by NRA supporters as he gave testimony regarding assault rifles. Watching that happen, seeing the pain on his face, was truly heartbreaking. As these hecklers shouted at him and disturbed the proceedings screaming about their 2nd Amendment rights, they didn't mind stepping all over the father's 1st Amendment rights to voice an opinion.
These supporters wherever they may be, are the equivalent of The Westboro Baptist Church, having no respect for victims families in the face of their grieve and terrible loss. They are contemptible in their actions.
John...I'm not a grammar expert. Are you? I'm guessing not since you posted not one single intellectually sound argument to anything they said. These guys are experts on grammar and the meaning of words and phrases, both current and historical.
If you have any comments by grammar experts supporting the authors contention that the wording of the Second Amendment is ambiguous, then please post it for all to read.
Another great example of a crazy nut with all RANT and no Substance. Hard to trust liberals, so I guess its a great thing to trust Conservatives, right. 1 sided thinking will get you a long way. I'm glad the majority in this country don't think like this guy.
Another great example of a liberal who can't read and comprehend. I don't see anywhere where I said to trust conservatives, hell I don't trust a lot of them myself. Glad to see the DOE did you right.... or did they.
VicVega Can't put up such a sign because it wouldn't be true.............hs(numbers) suggest you look at Justice Scalia's writings in Heller for what the Supreme Court finds acceptable in regards to acceptable restrictions. Research is in the eyes of the beholder............Alex M again thank you. I do not agree with you how ever that extremes have taken over the conversation. A case in point is our discussion here. Polls show that the American People want this and they don't favor one extreme or the other. What we are looking for here is common sense of which there is a dearth of in extremes of both sides.
This country is falling apart. No one respects each other, laws, The Constitution, etc. I am tired of it. I didn't vote for any of this and many of you people out there don't realize what a living hell you are creating for not just yourselves, but for the youth like me. I believe in having all of my gun rights, as friends, family and myself, have been in positions where it has likely saved our lives. I believe that people should have the right to come here, and have to enter our country the RIGHT way, the rest of them need to go back to where they came from and start over. I believe we are all failing ourselves and our futures by all of the poor choices we are making today. From taxation, immigration, gun rights, government, welfare systems, everything. What in the world are many of you thinking? America has become lazy, pathetic, disgruntled. I am embarrassed to consider many of you Americans. If you don't believe in what this country stands for, or what it was suppose to stand for, if you feel that you would rather make the criminals the predators and us the prey, if you feel like sitting on your lazy a$$e$ and complaining about the system instead of getting you a$$ off the couch and making a better life for yourself, if you feel like giving my hard earned taxes to help criminals and illegals, etc., please find another country to destroy. There are many of them out there that would love to have you! Did you know that Switzerland is the safest place in the world? Do you know why? They give every one of their citizens a gun and teach them how to use it. Why would a criminal go after a hard target. Common sense knows they would rather find the easy targets. ( like schools unfortunately )
Not saying this is true, but it has been leaking out that the government set up the Conneticut school shooting and that it actually didn't happen. There has already been documentation and some proof provided that this was a set up from the government to "redefine" our gun control laws. The donation account set up for the mass school shooting in Conneticut was actually created two days prior to the school shooting. Who does that? If the shooting is indeed factual, then I am so unbelievably sorry for all of the families losses, but if not, then maybe we should be pointing our fingers at other places. Also, we are talking about taking away assault rifles. Really? There was no assault rifle involved in the mass school shooting. Only hand guns and a shotgun.
People, you are waiting for government to make all of the decisions, we should be making our decisions, building our futures, protecting ourselves and each other. What are you people thinking?
Alex M before you start giving me extremes gleaned out of the posters above I'm going to give you AZKID. That anybody could even start to believe such pure unadulterated Bushra is beyond me but then to waste every bodies time repeating it simply boggles whatever sane mind I have left.
Really? "Grammar experts" now dictate our constitutional law? I'm not debating their argument because I doubt it has any veracity...thanks for confirming.
I do not agree with you how ever that extremes have taken over the conversation.
I should have clarified, the extremes have taken over the media, I guess because they make great headlines. Since the media is where people get the high majority of their information, they jump on that as to what the whole debate is about, when it isn't, that's just the circus sideshow.
As far as azkid, I agree with most of his points in the first paragraph. The conspiracy theory in the second is far fetched, that goes along with 9/11 being done by our government.
Redneck
I have found that a background check is for all, no matter what race. Ive seen all facet's of people in regards to race have to do a background check. So it is the same then.
hs321 - my former Supreme Court Justice trumps your "expert" - who isn't:
Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens called for Congress to tighten gun laws in the wake of shootings such as the one that took place in Aurora, Colorado.
Stevens noted that the legal precedent for restricting gun rights — United States vs. Miller — still stands, despite the ruling in the 2005 Heller case that overturned the Washington, D.C., ban on owning handguns, even in one’s own home.
“[Miller] was generally understood to limiting the scope of the Second Amendment to the uses of arms that were related to military activities,” Stevens said today during a question-and-answer session after a speech today with the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s Legal Action Project. “The Court did not overrule Miller [in Heller]. Instead it ‘read Miller to say only that the Second Amendment does not protect those weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes, such as short-barreled shotguns . . . Thus, the Second Amendment provides no obstacle to regulations permitting the ownership or the use of the sorts of the automatic weapons used in the tragic multiple killings in Virginia, Colorado, or Arizona in recent years.”
Stevens criticized Congress for failing to pass such laws.
“I find it almost difficult to accept the fact that, notwithstanding the recent tragedies that I mentioned — you mentioned — how little activity there’s been in lawmaking bodies to address this issue,” Stevens said during the question-and-answer session. “The fact that Congress doesn’t address it, I find mind-boggling, to tell you the truth.” The event began with a video montage newscasts covering recent shootings, such as the Batman shooting and the attack on a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin.
He added that the Heller decision leaves the door open to banning the carry of weapons in public. “There’s a very powerful argument for saying it does not extend to disagreeing with local communities about decisions about which public places they should not be permitted to be carried [in],” Stevens said.
Stevens also had a recommendation for people who keep a weapon in their homes for self-defense purposes. “Maybe you have some kind of constitutional right to have a cell phone with a pre-dialed 911 in the number at your bedside and that might provide you with a little better protection than a gun which you’re not used to using,” he said to laughter.

I do not belong to a political party!!!!! I wouldn't belong to a political party!!!!!
By viewing the comments on this page, why would anyone?
I love the Liberal rants of racist RWNJ, and the party of no. Also, the Republican rants of libby nuts, and so on.
You wonder hwy nothing gets done? Neither one of these party's have the wherewithall to budge on their positions. Its a freaking joke. To blame one over the other is more than ridiculously stupid
Well if Stevens is the final word, why is there any argument at all? Could it be that Stevens is (obviously) not the final word? (Stevens said "automatic weapons", when I believe the weapons used were semi-automatic. Different animal.)
I guess my last word on this would be to say the the Framers of the Constitution clearly understood the right to defends oneself against unjustified assault is a human right, an inalienable right. No one can logically argue that point.
So I guess we will wait and see to what degree our human rights will be limited by the coming legislation.
"To ban guns because criminals use them is to tell the innocent and
law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own
conduct, but on the conduct of the guilty and the lawless, and that the
law will permit them to have only such rights and liberties as the
lawless will allow...
For society does not control crime, ever, by forcing the law-abiding to
accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of criminals.
Society controls crime by forcing the criminals to accommodate
themselves to the expected behavior of the law-abiding." - Jeff Snyder
Soon the criminals may be given the upper hand.
Alex,
Its quite obvious you can't comprehend. You made the statement saying you can't "trust liberals". And since you made that statement I ask you well since you can't trust liberals then I guess you must trust conservatives. Which was an assumption on my part base on your previous comment about liberals. You just made yourself look real stupid trying to correct me on comprehension. Better luck next time,
@Forrest,
I could care less about Marco Rubio. He's just another a$$ kisser. Depends on the time of day and what day of the week it is on whom's butt he is kissing.
@SeekingSanity.......keep looking hon. You might get lucky and find it one day. Before all the illegal aliens steal it. Oh, btw. I have PLENTY more names for the little illegals.
Sandie, that kind of talk was racism when it was directed at my Great Grandparents on their arrival from Germany and it's still racism today.
Bigotry survives, only the victims change.
The long and mostly civil war that began in the 1960s has for all intents and purposes been won. The America that so many on the Right fear to lose has been lost, and no, not to some inane Commie horde but to a pragmatic pact between the forces of I and We. From the outside, it appears that the nation is coming together … the sea change of demographics has washed over the land and a new-found voice is marching on the last remaining glass ceilings. At least they are on the federal level.
It will, however, be an act of blindness to ignore what is about to happen on the State level. Republicans at the federal level will certainly move quickly to the center as we can already see, but on the State level, the move will be to further entrench the social positions that lost them the general election.
It is already difficult not to see Hillary Clinton becoming the next President. The coming split in Republican ranks all but insures it. Those on the Right should not fear Hillary as she is a pragmatic centrist of the first order. What they need to fear is that their State Governors entrench them in the past while the country as a whole moves, yup you got it, forward.
It is already difficult not to see Hillary Clinton becoming the next President.
You folks can't wait to get Obama out of office and move on either, eh?
Welcome to my world.
2 weeks into the "Next 4 Years" and I read on here all day about how great it will be when Clinton finally gets her chance.
bcwc: Gov. Christie yesterday vetoed a minimum wage increase in New Jersey. Terrible move. Just terrible.
Senator Rubio is one of the most over-rated GOP politicians out there (the media's current golden boy), surpassed only by Jindal.
I agree with you, Hillary Clinton will get a lot of support from both parties. And would win easily should she run in 2016.
The Republican Party is still weighed down by their divisiveness that they have been selling for generations, and it will take a long long long time for them to overcome it.
Until then, democrats will continue to win the White House.
In the meantime, I wish the Republican Party well. I really do. So much time wasted all these years.
I see of late some very thoughtful republicans (Michael Steele) who I think are going to make a difference in their party. Mr. Steele is trying very hard to talk sense to them and I applaud him for that. The party needs more like him.
White Collar Auto you're full of crap. At your most lucid.
WCA,
Look at it as you wish, but the actual feeling on the Left is yay, 4 + 8 and maybe by 2024 Republicans will have become honest conservatives again.
Auntie Fascist
Um? Thank you?
It has nothing to do with Obama WCA. It has everything to do with what is right about America, and your vision is not right. It is clear enough for a cave man to see it. Why not you?
You hit a nerve WCA and they all know it and are reacting extremely predictably. They saw the mistake they made in '08 about a year and a half later, but had to live with it and praise the man they chose over Hillary. And now, they seek forgiveness from her for throwing her under the bus for a silver tongue who has provided practically zero leadership and if asked, couldn't pack her lunch.
WCA: "You folks can't wait to get Obama out of office and move on either, eh?"
Whew, that explains it! And here all this past week I was thinking how crazy it was to get up at 1:30 am and drive two hours, get to the Mall in D.C. when it was still dark at 5:30 am, then stand out in the cold on my achy arthritic knees for six hours, just so I could be a part of Barack Obama's Inauguration - again.
And here it turns out I really did all that just so I could hopefully catch a glimpse of Hillary Clinton on the Jumbo-tron screen.
Hey, thanks for clearing that up for me, WCA - I feel so much better now! :)
BCWC---Rachel Maddow has been covering what is going on at the state level---the latest is the abolition of income taxes and replacing them with sales taxes. Of course this hurts lower & middle income people and helps higher income people---just what the GOP wants to do. We have to take control of the state houses away from the GOP.
Steeler Fan-380417
The Republicans are good at wealth redistribution: take from the poor and give to the rich.
Steeler, I understand Bobby Jindal is toying with the no income tax thrill of the day. Remember, as a liberal you must also show and give compassion to the wealthy ... it may trickle down also, and if so, in the guise of pity. The gratitude shown to them will surely be the haves ticket to Heaven.
Rachel Madcow has never said anything of importance! But, look at what she is! Goes without saying. This country will be saved when we get Obama out and someone with integrity in to correct the mess he has gotten this country into. Sad thing is yours (if you have any) and my grandkids who will have to clean this mess up out of their pocketbooks. And, sure would have been good to have support for the Embassy where we lost people. And, it does matter Hillary!
I try my best to explain that to my friends. The best I get is to be told I am stupid. I do not quit.
Jeff-1945027
OK ... hmmm, a graduate of Stanford, a Rhodes scholar with a Phd from Oxford, numerous awards. What do you have to show?
Oh, wait a minute, I get it, she is a lesbian. Yikes .... as to what you are, fill in the blank yourself.
Well, you brought that up not me! And, see what that education did for her! Also, I don't need to explain myself. I'm not that full of myself too! What I was refering to was she's a far left liberal. You were the one who took the path you did, not me! I could care less what, or whom she likes! But, I guess that's why her show is highly rated. NOT!
Clinton too old, not able to control her emotions, unable to manage the Iranians, Syria, the Middle East in general, failed to protect our people in Benghazi, admitted she wasn't up to date on the security issues in Libya, health issues, etc... She should simply stick to her repeated statement that she has no intention of running for President. Democrats can put forth a much better candidate than Hillary
Nothing on the bombing at Fordo? No questions of Mr. Menendez about his prostitutes? Nothing about the high level officials being investigated for the Stuxnet leaks? Nothing about the libor scandal? Good old NBC, if it isn't covered in syrup, you won't find it here.
Many of the far right posters do however suffer from "ODS - Obama Derangement Syndrome."
By the way Rachel is a true and Great American Citizen!
Rachel is nothing more than a party hack mouth piece parading around as a "journalist". She has learned well from her masters at Pravda.
Job1 - "many of the far right posters do suffer from "ODS - Obama Derangement Syndrome." So true and apparently it is highly contageous among the far righ!
She could'nt cover a dog show! But, she praises the dog and pony act going on in the White house.
This coming from someone who voted for Sarah Palin in 2008!!!
First of all, I saw some stupid liberal post that the economy was doing well, and it is killing the Republicans. I'm a Republican, and Myself and all My Republican friends want to see the economy do well, that way We have a better chance of doing well ! Second, the economy isn't doing well, while there is some positive signs, growth is still stagnant at best. I shouldn't have to tell You jack leg Libs. that it is the worst economic recovery in American History. Now, someone actually stated ( A liberal at that) That the markets have recovered. This is true, hence meaning that the bad ole rich people are making all the money ! Suprised You haven't called for Barry's resignation over that, or at least that they give their profits away ! Still more people on food stamps, living in poverty, Bla Bla Bla.... You all need to be proud of Barry ! Did anyone see that the Federal government conducted military exercises in a poor Houston neighborhood this morning, without any warning. Helicopters with soldiers repelling out, soldiers in Cammo running down the street firing their guns! Of course He didn't do it in a affluent neighborhood where there would be 3 kinds of hell raised, He did it in the back yard of the very people that elected Him. I guess You will defend the Idiot for this as well ? I think He is just flexing His muscle letting the people know that He isn't afraid to use force to crush any resistance ! Enjoy Your new country You imbeciles !
There's nothing progressive about Rachel. She is just an ultra left-wing dike and political hack. She isn't even an above average journalist. All she does is writes opinionated commentary. That's not journalism.
Job1, and you know who I voted for? Oh, I forgot Dems know everything! Everything of no consequence!
Joel: Wrong. The worst economic recovery in history was after the 1929 crash. The stock market continued to take massive dips for eight years when it matched the low of the meltdown for the last time and the economy didn't actually recover until WW2. Comparing the 2008 meltdown which was the worst since 1929 with normal recessions is absurd. Our economy in 2008 lost 8 million jobs, 11 trillion in net worth, 500 billion a year in tax revenue, millions lost their homes and our banks and financial institutions would have collapsed without trillions in government bailouts and loans. You right wingers try to paint Bush's meltdown as just a normal recession like we face every decade or so. Not even close.
Good point Larry, and do you what President Hoover (1929-1933) and Obama have in common? Their initiatives did not and will not produce economic recovery during each of their terms. And Hoover like Obama tried to combat the tough economy with volunteer efforts, public works projects and wait now: an increase in the top tax bracket and corporate taxes. History is certainly repeating itself, except I hope we don't end up with WWIII as a result, but it sure looks like it is coming comrade!!
Okay, forget assault weapon bans. Forget universal background checks. Forget reforming our mental health system. Forget violent movies, tv shows and video games. Forget them all.
The REAL problem with violence in our society goes much deeper than any of them. As the saying goes, "We have met the enemy and he is us". Here's just a sampling of some of the comments that were posted yesterday on another MSN story about a Secret Service dog that fell six stories to its death Saturday night while part of a security sweep in a parking garage before an event with Vice-President Biden. Those who simply honored this tragic loss - with their condolences to the dog's handler, or mentions of the Rainbow Bridge, or the love they have for their own dogs - should be commended. But those who felt compelled to post comments like the following are nothing short of sick, violent, and disturbed:
"I would rather see 50,000 Bidens take the fall than a single dog."
"It was protecting Biden - Likely Suicide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!""Wish it was Joe going over"
"Obama will now form a committee to control parking garages"
"What a shame to lose a beautiful devoted animal like this to protect a worthless slug like Biden."
"Waste of a good dog protecting a corrupt gun Nazi."
"It would have been so much easier to accept this poor dogs death if he'd been trying to push Biden off the roof. At least he would have died a true patriot ! LOL"
"Very sad...and what a waste. If Biden wasn't such a douche he wouldn't need so much security"
"Maybe they should hold a fundraiser for the dog and push Biden off the parking garage"
"Gave his life to protect a worthless piece of vomit."
"If I was forced to protect this dirtbag I would have jumped too!!!!!"
"Probably kept drunk Joe from stumbling over the edge. Poor dog."
"when I read dog died protecting biden I was hoping is was nancy pelosi or that other dried up skag diane feinstein"
"The dog probably laughed itself right off the ledge while watching Joe Biden be, well, Joe Biden. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Whah? Oops. [SPLAT!] "
"I know what's for dinner at the White House!"
"If the secret service wasnt too busy faking the Sandy Hook fiasco, maybe that dog would be alive"
People like this are the real problem. Many of them probably already own guns, and now they're demanding more. These are the people who many say are the "good guys" who should be "protecting" your children and grandchildren at school. Hell, some of them already are. They work at your kids' schools, or they coach their Little League team. Your children play with their children - the children they've already instilled with their own irrational fears and blind hatred. And all the assault weapon bans and universal background checks in the world aren't going to protect your kids from them.
Because their hates and fears are the real "concealed weapons" that threaten our society.
God help us all.
JoAnne, I remember back in the 1990's, with the rise of right-wing talk radio, it seemed like the Archie Bunker mentality was winning, and intelligent political debate was lost to the shouters. But, I think, the tide has turned, and the American public has grown tired of the ugliness of the right-wing haters. A sign of the times: Sarah Palin being dropped by Fox.
JoAnne,
I think it is a shame that some choose to use the anonymitty of the internet to hide behind a keyboard and make hateful comments they would be too ashamed or cowardly to say in person.
It boggles the mind to think of the depths to which some people will sink, and the despicable things they will say without any remorse.
JoAnne,
You have to wonder how many of those hate merchants are sitting in a pew on Sunday mornings...
BLECH!
I need a shower after reading their filth!
The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was part of a bigger crime bill and was passed by a Democratically controlled House and Senate. Senator Feinstein's proposal will be stand alone and does not have the votes or support to pass Congress. Lets let the states decide what they want to do about gun control. There are more important issues like immigration and the economy to focus on.
JoAnne in PA:
Seriously! No joking. No sarcasm. Just plain old straight talk.
Go back and read those lines and ask yourself, "What responsible adult talks like that?" The answer of course, is not one.
Where did you hear that nasty stuff? That was back in grade school. That is all the further their minds have matured, which is to say they stopped their intellectual development many years ago. The right wing is the perfect home for these low-intellect toads.
Remember that post you wrote about civility? You won't find it with that crowd.
Here is the scary truth and it is what must keep us energized for ALL future elections. Their voting rights are equal to yours. They must be crushed at the polls and sent to their rooms. They have no business in governance.
JoAnne, maybe you'd like to be fair and balanced and post all the negative things said about Bush, Palin, McCain, Romney, etc. that were posted here, too.
hypocrite.
Amy,
But, I think, the tide has turned, and the American public has grown tired of the ugliness of the right-wing haters
The ugliness and the hate, its not only coming from the right, this blog is a prefect example of how wrong your statement is.
Obama has gone to far to the left, now I understand how the liberals felt when Bush was in office.
VikVega -
In the interest of full disclosure, may I just add here - although it's probably a given - that I despised George W. Bush. I think history will show he was one of our worst Presidents ever. I'm pretty sure I probably referred to him in private conversations as a "blithering idiot" a time or two. Maybe more.
But I never - not on the worst day I ever had - would even have THOUGHT about advocating a violent death for him, let alone laughed about those sort of thoughts in a public forum, at the expense of a dead dog, no less. Whatever my personal feelings about him, the man had a wife and children and parents and other family and friends, and whether I understood it or not, over half of my fellow citizens had decided that for some reason he would make a better president than the guys I voted for. If I could not respect the man himself, I owed at least something to those who did. And we're not talking "negative things" here, Vik - we're talking about chortling gleefully over an imagined gruesome death. False equivalency at its finest.
David Walker - You told me not long ago that I need to fight their hatred with hatred, and I never got the chance to tell you that while I consider you a friend and fiercely admire much of what you write, you were completely wrong on that one. I will fight them with every ounce of my being. But I will NOT become them.
Contrary to what Vik would like to think, I may have a number of faults - but being a hypocrite is not one of them.
Great point you made TNSEVOL,
I've been saying it for awhile now, some people are straight up Cowards. Hide behind a keyboard to insult people like that, they don't have the balls to say it to someone face.
"A spoiled child (Bush) is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp: [audio sound of 4 gunshots being fired.] Just try it, you little b*stard. [audio of gun being cocked]." -- A "humor bit" from the Randi Rhodes Show
"I want to go up to the closest white person and say: 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing' and then slap him, just for my mental health" -- New York city councilman Charles Barron
"..And then there's Rumsfeld who said of Iraq 'We have our good days and our bad days.' We should put this S.O.B. up against a wall and say 'This is one of our bad days' and pull the trigger." -- From a fundraising ad put out by the St. Petersburg Democratic Club

"...In an ideal world, American consumers could be convinced to do the right thing through an appeal to logic with public service messages like the 'What Would Jesus Drive?' If you think for one minute I'm going to defend any of those comments, think again.
But what are YOU saying? That it's okay because "They do it too"? Or because "They started it?"
"They" don't speak for me. I'd be a lot more impressed if you took the time to say that the "they" I quoted don't speak for you, either.
Joanne
Are those all the comments that were posted by Hillary, Barack and Mooshell, or were there others ?
And of course, people like Joanne have no problem cheering on people like Feisty when they engage in diatribes like the following, regarding Mia Love, a conservative black woman.
Hypocrites the whole bunch.
Hi JoAnne,
There are just a lot of unbalanced and uneducated merchants of hate out there.
Uneducated? Why, because some people disagree with you?
hs321 - I know no one who would defend the comments you listed. But, look below you and see KingK referring to our First Lady as he usually does - in a derogatory manner. That's okay with you? I never once put Laura Bush down - didn't think much of her stance on things but I admired her support of early education. However, those on the far right continually make nasty remarks about our beautiful First Lady.
FeistyRedhead stated she needed a shower, no kidding Dick Tracy but I doubt that will remove the stench from that pig.
Yes!!!
There you all go again on the very next set of posts. Slander & hate from both sides. What are you people really acomplishing? If you think the devisivness in this country is because of one party or the other, you are all fools. (shakes head)
Seeking, We also didn't have the state run media telling us that Laura was one of the 10 most beautiful Women in the world , when We all know She doesn't quiet fit that bill:) And job1, uneducated merchant of hate like Crusty Redhead ? Look at the post, read it and weep !
JoAnne,
I did not specifically mention you, or anyone, in my comment. I agree with the premise of your original comment, that the problem is us. I also respect your integrity in not digressing to name calling, etc., to which I have to admit I make a conscious attempt to avoid but have found myself sucked down into the garbage more than once.
However, you were the one that posted comments from a recent story, all negative and from conservatives. To be fair, if the intent of your comments was "us" and not "them", the you should have posted comments from both sides.
The fact is, I read on these comments very often how hateful, mean-spirited and down-right evil conservatives/republicans are, and rarely is there a post demonstrating that some liberals are just as hateful, mean-spirited and down-right evil.
(In my youth I was Democrat, but then became a Republican. Gingrich and Delay were so despicable, I became and have remained an Independent ever since. Pelosi is the Democrats version of the Republicans Delay. I'm sick of both sides and all the partisan bickering. I sincerely hoped Obama could bring the nation together. However, he has failed miserably.)
hs321 -
My "intent" in listing the comments I did was not to define one group as being more hateful or despicable than another. I read one specific story and the comments that accompanied it yesterday and found them very disturbing in light of all our recent debates about the root causes of gun violence in our country. As your own examples clearly illustrate, there's plenty of hate on both sides to go around. If there's a difference - at least from my perspective - it's that I know of few if any liberals (including many of those you quoted) who are actually advocating that the solution to gun violence is more guns and fewer regulations and the type of "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality that seems to be on the rise. That doesn't make their speech any less hateful, but it does lead me to question how likely they would ever be to actually act on it. It bothers me when people who are advocating violence are the same ones demanding unlimited access to the means to perpetrate that kind of violence.
As to President Obama having "failed miserably" to bring the nation together, just what do you think he could have done - or what could he still do differently - that would win over people like, say, "KingK" or "stopfreeloaders" above? Or any of the posters who made the comments I mentioned? And let's be real here - most of those posters don't feel even half the hate for Joe Biden that they do for Barack Obama. I think he's been incredibly patient and forgiving of his enemies, considering the kind of filth that's been hurled at him, his wife, and even his little girls since the day he took office. He's given them far more of a chance than they've ever given him - or ever will. I'm not sure how one goes about bringing a nation together that is bound and determined to fight you tooth and nail every single step of the way - not because of what you say, but because of who you are.
In any case, if you truly are an independent and are sick of the partisan bickering, you're a rarity around here. Hey, there's one long-time poster here who uses "Sick of the Bickering" as her screen name and then does nothing but, day in and day out! I'm an admitted liberal through and through, but I have a very practical streak that says we could get a lot more accomplished in the next four years if we'd "just say no" to just SOME of the hatefulness and mean-spiritedness and vitriol and give even some grudging respect to the other side when it's due. If you read enough of my posts, you'll find that I try to do that. I too have been sucked into the garbage more than I'm proud of......but I do keep trying. Hope you will too.
Yay!! let us all embrace 11 million criminals into our society. "Dad I only stole a piece of candy, why am I in trouble? 11 million mexicans are getting a gift for a felony violation"
nuf said
Let me guess; you just washed your brain and you can't do a thing with it.
Auntie Fascist, your on fire. To hot to touch.
Can't handle the facts, must give you a great headache.
ponyboy-
A more accurate analogy would be: "Dad - you stole the piece of candy, why am I the one being punished?"
It would me immoral to deport hard-working, clean-living people who were brought here illegally as young children through no fault of their own, and know of no other home than America.
ponyboy, it's pretty clear you have absolutely no relationship with any fact.
Ponyboy, man up and cite your facts. I think you got your numbers from Uranus.
I know all those invaders! I just wish we could send them all back to Europe where they came from. They are just the worst, they destroy our environment and steal our land. Self deport already.
Ponyboy, your all over it! And, if they didn't have the illegals, we wouldn't have Obama. They don't want to have their illegal base cut into.
If OBAMA places the needs of 13,000,000 illegal aliens over the rights of even one American to be protected from them, he isn't worthy to lead this country or any other.
You're saying all 13M are dangerous felons, robbers, rapists, and murderers?
The left leaning loons forget that when Regan gave amesty it was to 1.3 million illegals and now they want to give amnesty to 13.6 million, who will pay for them, not liberals since they are the party of takers.
What is up with the Republicans? All this whining about Rachel Maddow because she is light years more intelligent than their sacred pundits. How sad is it that Marco Rubio has to go and worship at the "Alter of Limbaugh" to get his bonafides all settled before he can even support a piece of legislation as important as Immigration?
Obama's Hypocrites -
I would go so far as to say that if he signs legislation 'legalizing' the criminal trespassers that it makes him a traitor to this country as he is giving aid and comfort to invaders.
We need to be protected from them? Who is protecting us from your bigoted selves? You guys call rail on all you want - it is about time we got some human decency in our legislation. And don't forget- if they become citizens then they can pay taxes! So you don't have to do anything but put say nasty things on the computer all day long - they have your back.
TNSEVOL..."It would me immoral to deport hard-working, clean-living people who were brought here illegally as young children through no fault of their own, and know of no other home than America."
That is the short-term view.
As I see it, Mexico (government) and the Mexican people will never make intense efforts to better their country so long as the U.S. is an escape from that responsibility.
Giving an illegal a job, or his kids brought here illegally amnesty, because you feel sorry for them might help that individual’s current situation, but in the long run, it merely condemns future generations to the same the plight.
Some people let their feelings get the best of them. They simply cannot look at an alcoholic on the street and resist buying him a drink to make him feel better. It feels good at the moment, but it merely prolongs the overall suffering.
Nothing will ever change in any of the illegals country of origin as long as they have a means of escape from taking responsibility for themselves. By giving these illegals amnesty, you are condemning future generations to the same fate.
The video makes the big picture crystal clear:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=muw22wTePqQ
That's great Shar J.
"Hey illegal, we're going to give you amnesty. Aren't we decent human beings!"
(Then whispers to friend, "Thank goodness we can use the guys to pay for our social security.)
While I don't often agree with Rush Limbaugh, you have to give him credit for a truthful statement when he makes it. This latest immigration reform proposal is almost identical to the one Dubya and a coalition of Democrats, and a few Republicans, tried to push on the country five years ago. Knowing Dubya's propensity to make the wrong decision almost every time, I am extremely dubious about this proposal, whether it was made in 2007 or renewed in 2013. It basically says to people all over the world, our laws are meant to be followed, unless you really really want to break one, in which case we will eventually reward you for your persistence. Not a good message to send, in my opinion.
It says no such thing, and if you want to demonize the decision imagine the cost of deporting 11 million people through the revolving door that is our borders. This compromise does not offer amnesty and those that are here without documents go to the back of the line for citizenship. I personally hold a true value for the word illegal. However these are human beings coming to our shores because of the opportunity that our country will give them. If you don't understand opportunity perhaps you need to walk a mile in their shoes. Many risk life and limb to just come here, and I have a hunch if it was you that was oppressed by economic values in a country you would walk that mile.
I would get educated and get a job and contribute to society
ponyboy-
Please do so, then come back and maybe you will have somethng intelligent to add to the conversation.
It may sound like the message is really bad, but we have a Prime Minister Obama who is so ready to execute his own agenda to make sure that the citizens of this great nation will surely abide by his whims. Illegals, do not respect any laws, and they never will--that is the Obama way.
Johntho - They were able to find a way to get on this side of the border, I am sure they can find a way to get back. Just have to the make the insentive big enough.
No the Obama way is to give Americans what the majority want. You seem to forget, you are in the minority and in a republic, majority rules.
Shar, I'm just saying that Obama is abusive in his ways...btw we have a rule of law, 11 million latinos is not a majority. If American citizens take their votes away from the electorate, will the latino votes suffice????
What's abusive about signing something passed in congress by both parties? Republicans have a solid majority in the house so any bill sibmitted to the president for signature already has bipartisan support. Instead of bashing republicans for selling out for votes you bash Obama for signing the plan they submit. Typical.
Johntho..."It says no such thing..." Oh really.
The 1986 amnesty was Ted Kennedy's idea, and strictly enforcing existing immigration laws from then forward, promised by the Simpson-Mazzoli Act, was supposed to be part of the deal. So Reagan (who later said it was the biggest mistake he made) and Congress (Dems and Repubs alike) went along and gave amnesty to almost 3 million illegal aliens, sending the message, that if you can steal in and stay long enough, the Americans will reward your illegal acts by giving you amnesty. How strong was that message? We now have 4 times as many, or more, wanting amnesty.
So, let's give these 12 million illegals amnesty and in another 20-25 years it will be 48 million wanting amnesty. Does that sound like a good idea to anyone?
A few republicans are clamoring for hispanic votes, and Obama is taking advantage of it the best way he can. If majority of republicans reject the bill, Obama will be displeased. He'll try to find a way to give amnesty to all his 11 million illegal aliens--that is abusive, not to mention the health and welfare payments that this illegals will get from the government once legal status is attained under Obama. In other words, whatever gains there are from immigration amnesty will be offset by the cost of dole outs and hand outs that's released by the Obama government to all these 11 million illegals--that's abusive!
Since you guys are on gun control. let us face the facts. The reason gun violence is elevated is not because of "GUNS", it is because of poor parenting. Look where the majority of the violence is coming from. Poverty areas (that Obama has made 23 million stronger with welfare), broken homes, and bullying. Most all of these problems could be fixed if parents where strong and raised there kids with tough love, move away from a bad situation, and spanked there kids when they were bad. Stop giving giving kids praise for 9th place and telling them they did a great job when they were horrible. I work with kids every day,and the angry and violent ones......they have bad parents. I have yet to see a child that comes from a strong home with morals, values, a mom and dad, and love that is angry or violent, except in a couple mental health issues. But good parents recognize there kids need help not and XBOX. just my 3 cents.
So write a book on parenting, I am sorry that you don't that believe gun violence involves a gun.
If you can't see that guns make violent people more effective, there is no hope for you.
Good post pony, but parental accountability does not allow the government to expand and run more of your life. So liberals need to have more laws that make them feel good, even if they don't solve any problems.
Funny how liberals all focus on the 'assault rifle'. The kid in Newtown also had hand guns, and he walked right up to 6 and 7 year old kids at point blank and pulled the trigger. Does it really matter how fast you can shoot against unarmed kids? No. Not a single law that is being proposed stops this, or any of these other mass shootings from happening.
If you can't see that violent people can be prevented through strong parenting, then you are an ideological puppet. Gun violence, knife violence, sword violence, and 2x4 violence is all the same. keep the kidsfrom watching horrific shows, playing horrific games, and parent them will go a long way, much longer then an assault weapon ban. Sure do background checks, I went through 10 of them and safely teach my kids how to use and store them. Todays parents suck!! Nuf said
Guns don't make people violent, but they make violent people highly effective.
I'm willing to take a chance that 20 First Graders will be butterknifed to death by a lone wielder of cutlery. I'm unwilling to face the virtual certainty that 20 MORE First Graders will be mowed down in a hail of bullets should we fail to change course.
So now your book on parenting should become required reading, see what we have here is you discovering a source for gun violence and yet you offer no cure. Matter of fact you cloud the issue by bringing up early childhood decisions. The truth is this, the common denominator is the gun, not the the knife, sword or 2x4. or even parenting as a few of these shooters were mentally ill and that is a disease or illness that has nothing to do with parenting.
ponyboy-
So we should only praise and love the gentically superior? How about if a kid worked hard, gave his best effort and still came uin 9th place? I would be proud of my son, and tell him so, if that happened to him.
That is an oversimplification of a complex issue. There are plenty of exampes of violent adults that grew up in well-balanced, two parent homes. Also, you can't legislate "good parenting" or enforce a "two parent" rule.
Really? You have a 70% chance to survive being stabbed in the heart, but only a 20% chance of surviving a gunshot to the heart. Which odds would you take?
Even if your reasoning was correct and bad parenting leads to violent children, we can't legislate or force "good parenting". The least we can do is to make guns less available to those violent people so that their violence is less deadly.
Press 1 for English....Press 2 for Spanish....No, this is not a racial comment....Just something all of us hear everyday......
Native, according to the plan, learning English is a step on the pathway.
Every time you spank or use violence, the message sent is hate.
"Tough love" ain't no love at all. Just negative, learned behavior that is passed on and on.
Peace.
That is exactly why we have such a weak America. Liberals don't want to parent.
Native2034:
Hey, just for the hell of it, why don't you go see what language was the primary competition for English when our country came into being.
Here's some clues. The British King spoke that language and couldn't speak English. This language was spoken by as much as one-third of the population when the United States was in its infancy.
It was German, bub. If your post was supposed to be humorous..........well, it wasn't.
Native2034
How fortunate it is not ... press 1 for Spanish ... press 2 for English. Your head might explode.
Mr. Walker FYI this is 2013.
Depending on which part of the country your boat landed, it could have been Cherokee, Ojibwe, Seminole..
Post 7.14 You are entirely correct! Like your post!
That's right Native2034, this is 2013, and less than a century hence it will be 2100 when the country's "whites" are a minority. You will not be fondly remembered.
Here's something to remember right this minute. As Santayana said, "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Hey Pony! My mom was fairly liberal and when i stepped out of line my a$$ met the wire styling brush. It definitely made the right impression(literaly). I hope that you are more intelligent than you came off sounding with your post. Have a great day!
I, too, work with children and I can assure you that positive reinforcement for the child that did not come in first place goes a heck of a lot further is molding that child's psyche than berating him or her for not coming in first. And I see your "keep the kidsfrom watching horrific shows, playing horrific games, and parent them will go a long way, much longer then an assault weapon ban" and raise you the hypocrisy of the NRA putting out an app for 6 years to "target practice."
Allentonian -
I don't care if you work with kids or not, reasonable correction of children is necessary to show tham that there are limits - something that too many of today's kids do not get. I bet you didn't slap your toddler's hand and say 'NO!' when they reached for a cup of hot coffee of a hot pan that they thought they could reach either.
As for the NRA - not a single one of the mass killers has been a member of the NRA, so you evidently want a scapegoat - logical or not. Also, FYI, target practice is necessary for anyone to become proficient with a weapon, whether that weapon is a gun, a bow and arrow, a sword, or a fist.
I wonder just how psychologically messed up your own kids are?
screeminmimi:
Right you are. Could also have been French, Russian, or OMG - Spanish.
@ Backhouse
You are one of the biggest blithering idiots I've ever read. I grew up in what most people call an "extremely abusive" childhood. Got my ass beat from head to toe by a barbers sharpening belt more times than I can remember. Also the same thing done to my sister & brother. My sister through the help of many counselors & psychologists just continued to blame all of her problems on her upbringing, while my brother and I decided we wouldn't live that life. So, don't go telling me that abuse just gets passed on & on & on. It doesn't!!!! Those that have a brain in their head will lead perfectly healthy and loving lives. We will never forget what happened to us, we just moved on to making our lives better. YOU ARE WHATS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY!!!!!!!
Better strong republican parents like the mother of the baby killer who was a big gun and shooting nut than wimpy liberals who don't own guns? Maybe keeping dozens of guns at home and taking your kids regularly to shooting ranges is your idea of being strong parents but I doubt the parents of those 20 murdered babies or 6 adults killed by that psycho would agree. Most mass murderers weren't raised by anti gun liberals. In almost every case they were raised in homes with lots of guns.
John B. Are you aware that a man in China walked into an elementary school and killed over 20 people...with a knife?
The destruction two one-gallon cans of gasoline can do will make an AR look like a toy. Is there a background check to buy gasoline? Do you have to register gas cans?
We could go on with analogies like this all day long.
@ Larry
My parents belonged to no polictical party. My Father was a physically & mentally abusive alcoholic. My Mother was an enabler. I refuse to belong to a political party. As you can see by the posts here, they are really making things happen. NOT
Apparently I know more about it than you do...because no one died in that attack. http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/24/world/asia/china-school-knife-attack/index.html
So keep coming up with reasons why guns aren't any more deadly than anything else. People want them BECAUSE they're more deadly than those other things. You just proved it.
Without raising a hand to anyone, or one raised to them:
My children are thoughtful, kind, confident, and accomplished.
Bad and abusive habits go through generations, and we have to break free of them. To me that is the responsibility of a "parent", or anyone who takes on the responsibility of nurturing a child. Children are not minature adults - they don't think like we do. But they come into this world feeling part of it. They want to cooperate, be loved and have fun.
Do you call everyone names, then? Or are you just very attached to labels and tight judgements?
How about telling us what is in this immigration bill. Or does it have to pass first to see what is in it?
Another,
It isn't a bill yet but there is an agreed to outline of what the steps will be.
A little research will provide the many criteria that must be met including, securing the border first, undocumented immigrants must register and apply for a temporary permit to stay here and ending with learning English and getting in line behind all others that have applied for citizenship.
The only advantage for illegals is that they do not have to leave during the process
http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/white-house-embraces-principles-of-senate-immigration-reform-plan/2013/01/28/a539c44a-6974-11e2-ada3-d86a4806d5ee_story.html
Without specific steps to prevent the employment of illegal immigrants, and severe punishment of these employeRs, any immigration reform will do more harm than good.
It actually sounds like a good outline but anytime Obama and the liberals get involved it will turn into 26,000 pages of loopholes and exemptions.
Really - have you ever seen a Republican bill without loopholes? It is pretty rampant. Or are you blaming everything including the weather on one group of peope? How ignorant.
The government could have controlled immigration decades ago by simply creating a national data base of all legal residents and requiring all employers to check a potential employees right to work. Had this been implemented illegals would have been forced back to their home countries. Democrats never supported this because it would anger their hispanic base and republicans didn't because their base depends on cheap labor.
TEA PARTY:
This is what (political) defeat looks like. The Congressional leaders of your party are moving against one of the key (anti-immigrant) tenets of your political agenda. Elsewhere, state legislatures are recognizing the evil of denying equality to those who do not fit into your rigid gender identifications. Everywhere, the great middle majority of America is standing against you.
YOU have played the decisive role in moving the GOP close to political annihilation. It was not democrats. It was not President Obama. It was YOU.
We (democrats) know we cannot rehabilitate you. But, we also know that, by God’s great wisdom, mortality will expunge your particular brand of self-righteous intolerance from this world. Until then, we will oppose you whenever and wherever you seek to impose your fanaticism upon others.
Once again it is progressives (now aka democrats) who have pulled the petulant, fearful regressives kicking and screaming into the brighter light of a more humane future.
nice...a brand new law that obama will refuse to enforce....
what a waste of time..
As is reading your posts.
don't mess with texsas..
"what a waste of time"... Agreed.
You should have never posted that one.
Where does it say that in the article? As it now stands, it sounds like the President is supporting the Senate bill? I see nothing that says he will refuse to endorse.
Obama has deported more aliens than any preceding president. Illegal crossings have plummeted. Do all Texans just shoot off their mouth without thinking? Aren't facts recognized in Texas??
"Facts" and "Right wingers" are mutually exclusive. If they had dealt with facts they would probably be in charge-- and they would not be Right Wingers.
The world is changing to what a new generations wants. Since the election: taxes have gone up on the wealthy, immigration reform looks like it's happening, the Boy Scouts are moving off their intolerance of gay members, women are able to fight on the battle field, sensible gun laws look like they will be enacted. It's not the "Brady Bunch" world anymore. If you are Boomer pining for the old days, you're wasting your time.
Obama has doubled the number of border patrol agents and drastically increased the number of illegals caught and sent back from Bush numbers. When their biggest campaign attacks against Obama was disputing his birth certificate, place of birth and college records you really have to ask if they're concerned with facts?
Gun lovers are at their wits end, no one is taking away their weapons, this reform is not going to diminish the 2nd amendment in any way. There is a need to reduce gun violence and it is necessary to demonstrate this in the plans/policies this administration has tabled . Its troubling how Wayne Lapiere and his lovers of blood money are behaving , is as if their blood line is being cut off and they wont be able to purchase the biggest 747 Aircraft. Go for it Mr . President, hit the road people over guns is far more important .
Joyce Otway...."no one is taking away their weapons'....Not true...
Please explain to me how Feinstein's bill to ban semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines (part of the arm) does not take away the right of a legal law-abiding citizen that wants to purchase that type of weapon that is legal to own under our current laws and most importantly the 2nd Amendment.
You are supporting a focus on legal, law-abiding citizens and not the real problem..criminals and mentally deranged bent on doing harm to their fellow citizens.
You also don't have a right to own anti-aircraft missiles and fragmentation grenades.
Is this a bad thing?
Actually John B, you can purchase grenades, mortars and explosive rockets under the National Firearms Control Act.
Requires full background check and authorization by FBI and ATF, $200 tax payment plus the cost of the item.
Sure wished posters out here would do a little research before making false statements.
That would qualify as "regulation", wouldn't it? In which case reasonable regulation of our Second Amendment rights is a reality, isn't it?
Shepherd, "taking away" is not the same as "restricting the sale of". Noone is taking away anyone's weapons. To infer otherwise is to distort the facts and engage in fear-mongering.
Their are already limits to what private citizens can own. You can't own surface to air missiles, machine guns or tanks. Congress already has the ability to limit that right. Extending it to assault rifles is their right.
This is in response to the idiot who posted that gun violence is the highest in Democratic Controlled big cities...take a look at NYC where gun control is strong and gun violence and general crime has been decreasing since the early 1990s. While we had a republican Mayor for most of that time, the City Council has been almost all democratic for this entire period...and sorry, but Bloomberg is not a republican...he's currently and Independent who used to be a Democrat but became a Republican to run for mayor in order to avoid a crowded primary in 2001.
Hey Pat but didn't the guy who played tennis all day long, a Dumbocrat, David Stinkins I recall, wasn't the murder rate around 2000 per year when he was running the show in NYC?. And the Sullivan Act the hand gun law you refer to was passed in 1911. So how did that help in the 1990's during the Stink mans regime, I wonder? I guess you forgot to mention that, but as a life long NYer I am here to help. Oh and don't tell the rest of the country how dangerous most neighborhood in NYC are. Let them think that Times Square is what the city looks like, not the south Bronx or East New York, lets keep it our secrets, ok.
As governor Romney enacted gun control legislation. He noted hunters and people wishing to defend themselves didnt need assault rifles to do either.
Stay classy, gun lovers...
It would be great if anti-gunners could intelligently discuss the issues. Anyone who is in law enforcement or knows anything about firearms realizes that an assault weapons ban or limiting magazine size will do nothing to prevent further tragedies. There are over 300,000,000 privately owned firearms in the US; you can't control them or prevent them from being exchanged or moved accross state lines. You will note that 12 GA pump action shotguns are not on Diane Feinsteins legislation. A pump action shotgun loaded with 00 buck could create as much carnage as an assualt rifle with a 30 round magazine which is why the proposed legislation is a joke and just a feel good measure.
...and it would be great if the NRA could discuss the issues without the knee-jerk reaction of saying, "THEY'RE COMING TO TAKE ALL OUR GUNS!"
...because we're not talking about that.
...so we should just accept Newtown and Columbine and Aurora and Virginia Tech and just throw up our hands and do nothing?

You can report all persons who are here illegally to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at 1-866-DHS-2ICE (347-2423).
Obama gives in again, and again, and again, on his principles. Right or wrong, easy or difficult, he has become the most passive President.
What principles?
He has none that I can see - other than paying back his union backers.
Or did they give him an ultimatum?
Backhouse.....You do realize that no report from Newtown has ever claimed that Adam Lanza "expended 100 rounds in two minutes"?
Only Piers Morgan has stated that an AR-15 expends 100 rounds in a minute....Are you Piers?
What is true is that the first 911 call from Sandy Hook was logged at 9:30 a.m. and the first police to enter the building was at 10:23 a.m....over 50 minutes later.
At the end of the day, you are focusing on the wrong thing. Virtually every mass shooting has been conducted by a mentally deranged evil person who, after the fact, everyone said was evil and did nothing and was conducted in "gun free zones"....In fact in Colorado James Holmes picked the one theater that posted signs to that effect and did not have armed security (6 other theaters did not have such signs and had security within the same distance).
Why are you so for taking the rights away from law-abiding legal gun owners and so against providing security for our children against any threat (gun, bomb, fire, mob, knife, bat etc.)??
Shepherd -
No one is advocating taking rights away from anyone, only for some common-sense steps to reduce the likelihood of this happening again or minimizing the damage if it does.
You seem to think an armed guard at the movie theater would have prevented the shooting in Colorado. I would argue that it would not, the armed guard would have just been the first casualty. How effective would counter-fire have been in a crowded, darkened movie theater? The most likely outcome would be more deaths by "friendly fire".
The shooters in all these incidents should never have had access to a semi-automatic weapon and high-capacity magazines. If these items had been illegal maybe there would have been fewer casualties.
Why would "law-abiding legal gun owners" feel threatened by background checks and a ban on assault-style weapons and high capacity magazines?
The truth of the matter is that there is a highly lucrative market for gun manufacturers, corrupt gun dealers, and the "straw men" who purchase guns in bulk for criminals.
The NRA seems to be more concerned about lining their own pockets and protecting the "rights" of the gun lobby than they are about the safety of law-abiding citizens.
Shepherd-1033298.......
If you and your family were locked in a room with several mentally unstable folks, would you prefer those maniacs were armed with massively loaded assault rifles, mere recreational weapons, or not armed at all?
Well, that is much our situation. We cannot remove (from our society) all those broken minds before they act out insanely. But, we can deprive them of the most malignantly efficient tools to commit their atrocities.
YOUR "right" to massively arm yourself against some fantasy tyrannical government MUST be subordinated to OUR concerns for all our safety (right to LIFE) in view of clear and present dangers posed by mad men armed with military assault rifles and large capacity magazines.
Ian Emdee, how naive of you.
You can make a gun out of a magnum flashlight.
Guns will never go away. Taking them from law abiding citizens leaves only the outlaws carrying.
Think.
TNSEVOL....Explain to me how Feinstein's bill to ban semi-automatic weapons (including shotguns and handguns) and the accessories that go with them (including magazines greater than 10) does not "take away" my current right to purchase those items that is legally my right today.
No matter how you spin it, it does remove a right that is granted under the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.
If the current law was enforced and the privacy laws (including HIPAA), James Holmes would never have been able to purchase those weapons, would have been identified by LE as a threat and Aurora would likely have never happened.
Your focus on law-abiding citizens is totally wrong and against our Constitution.
Increase security against all threats, focus on mental health issues to get these people the care they need and increase the penalties for criminal use of guns.
Those three things will follow the Constitution and bring the nation together.
Focusing only on the 2nd Amendment and taking legal, law-abiding gun owners rights away only divides the nation and disarms everyone but the criminals and mentally deranged.
Is that your goal? It sure seems like it.
Ian EmDee....It is your choice to not exercise your 2nd Amendment Rights and protect your family and take your chances on surviving the 15-30 minutes it takes for law enforcement to reach you (assuming you are able to call 911).
As to your example, several fallacies. Under current law, if enforced, those individuals cannot purchase legal firearms.
Under our current Constitution, I would be protecting my family with legally owned firearms, including those that allow me to handle "a room full of several mentally unstable people".
Now just for the hypothetical, if the room full of several mentally unstable people are all armed with "molotov cocktails" would you be advocating for the ban on wine bottles and gasoline?
If they were armed with knives, would you be for the ban on all knives?
If they were armed with baseball bats, would you be for the ban on baseball bat?
Your argument 1) attacks law-abiding citizens not criminals, 2) doesn't address mental illness, and 3) fails to take into consideration the estimated over 2,000,000 that a violent crime is averted or stopped by a legal gun owner (Cato Institute white paper, Feb 2012).
Even the Washington Post reported from 1982-2012, there were less than 50 mass shootings.
For the same time period, using the Cato data, over 40,000,000 violent crimes were averted or stopped by legal gun owners.
I believe I would prefer being 800,000 times more likely to benefit from a legal gun owner than being involved in a mass shooting.
Sheperd, you are so eager to protect your second ammendment rights that you are trampling all over my first ammendment rights.
Shepherd-1033298.........you said:
Mental illness, usually, is not a birth defect. It develops, often undetected, over time. There are MANY mentally unstable folks among us RIGHT NOW. There always will be. They are developing their illnesses all the time and everywhere. We CAN'T get away from them. We can only control the tools they use.
We (democrats and other sensible folks) have no problems with SOME weapons. Our desire is to remove military style weaponry capable of using large capacity magazines. You won't be able to handle any mentally unstable folks unless you know they are that in advance and you are not taken by surprise. Both are far from given.
Knives and baseball bats are not purpose designed to quickly, efficiently, and at a distance, kill large numbers of people. Assault weapons with large magazines are designed to do exactly that.
This "data" is FALSE. Provide a credible link or retract this nonsense.
First the immigration situation. Giving 11 million some type of freedom and forgiveness for ILLEGALLY crossing over just creates more and more burdens financially for the US. 11 million more on welfare, foodstamps, and assitance. I have no problem up until and when I see these illegals not giving one hoot about the US and waiving the Mexican flag on American soil. As far as guns go they are not and will not be the problem. Mental illness is the issue here and not guns. Anything and everything will kill in the hands of a mentally ill person. Who would have thought that a plane could have been used as a weapon? But it did. The most serious and largest casualties on kids was not last month or Colorado. NOPE... it was 1927in Bath Michigan where a janitor and school board member killed 38 kids with dynamite blowing up the school. People kill people.
stillhurting,
People kill people.
No, people with weapons kill people! Be it bombs or guns or knives, we must do a better job of keeping weapons from people who would use them to kill other people. I think the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness trumps the right to bear arms anyday. I agree with JoAnne in PA, it's hate taught to each following generation over and over we must change somehow. Hate of our fellow man, because he/she is different than us is what will finally be the thing that destroys us as a nation and will stop us being the becon for the world.
You rednecks can't show me ONE mass shooting at a black or Hispanic school. These shootings happen in redneck places and are perpetrated by children of parents who support gun rights.
Listen, you dumb rednecks, shut up about your guns, quit waving them around like they are great, and keep them away from your evil little demonic no good rotten ignorant redneck sons.
You forgot "inbred" John.
You .....MAY.... live to regret ever having said that.
Who are you threatening Freddy? Me, John, or both of us?
May have figured you might be inbred!
John, the name calling tolerant liberal - all mass shootings were committed by registered dems (or the children of) in GUN FREE ZONES!
Don't you ever wonder why these mass shootings NEVER occur in police stations, or gun shows, or NRA conventions?
Think!
JOHN PENN
You are the perfect example of someone who should not have a gun.
Or a pen.
Republicans will gladly abandon long-held "principles" if they perceive that doing so will help them win elections. It's all about winning. Only about winning. They are trying to reshape their image in order to win, not because comprehensive immigration reform is the right thing to do.
You must have your parties confused! I know who are the panderers!
You don't even know who the panda bears are Jeffy!
Love it when a president keeps the fire burning under Congressmen butts. They haven't worked this hard since Clinton. Keep the flames burning.
So where is the budget Tony? glad Obammy is keeping priorities straight.
tony ,you and the rest of the liberals are screwed in the head.it is the liberal scum that will do anything to stay in power,it is odumbo and the liberal idiots that is ruining this once great country,in fact there is no difference between hitler and odumbo, and there is no difference between the liberals and the nazis, and the only reason odumbo and the liberal idiots want to let the illeagals into this country is for votes and nothing else.
Obama has realized that if he allows some Senator to run with an immigration package and it fails, he cal always blame them instead of taking the blame himself.
And if Obama insisted on using HIS plan, you would be calling him a dictator. The President just can't win with you clowns.
Well, he's never taken blame for anything! And, never asked a hard question by the media. They don't want him to look bad, even when he is terrible.
Good grief, you anti-gun liberals are twisted and delusional. NO path to citizenship until the border is sealed.
Hear! Hear!
My Congresswoman is voting NO on this,.....how about yours ? I'm so proud to be AMERICAN, how about you ?
What exactly are you proud of? You happened to be born in America, how is that anything for you to be personally proud of? I can see you being HAPPY that you live in America. You can even think that America is the best country that ever existed in mankind's history, [it's not!] but you have absolutely nothing to be proud about simply for being American.
Freddy, you can even be thankful that you're in America. I'm not proud that either you or your congresswoman are Americans. I'd like to think we're smarter than that.
Hey, freddy4life...
My congressman is voting yes. I was born in Brazil, am am happy to be an American Citizen by choice, not by accident such as yourself. I also happen to have proudly worn the USMC uniform for a full four years, to defend idiots such as yourself to have the freedom to continuously spout forth the diarrhea of the mouth that seems to have become endemic in the right wing. Go back to your confederate homeland, you bigot. You do not belong in the true United Stated Of America.
A person who identifies themselves as anything other than an American is NOT an American no matter where they were born or to who.
I see far too many "Latinos" and far to few "Americans" in the so called illegal immigrant group and their offspring. There is no assimilation - only the desire to take over like a bunch of invading thugs!
Want to be an American? Start by learning our language and customs and identify yourself as an American.
all of the politicians should vote no if they love this country, the liberal a— — — — — — — and odumbo is ruining this once great country
Jay -
Just one question -
If you did things the right way, why do you support those who break the laws of this country and come here illegally? There are immigration laws for a reason and I have no problem with anybody who chooses to become a citizen using the current laws already on the books. But tell me, why should those who come here without following our immigration laws be allowed to immigrate? Why should they be allowed to by-pass those who follow the rules?
Well, I guess that was a few questions, but they are all related.
and if you love this country soildier, you should go to school and become literate and somewhat intelligent
Literate? Let's see... I speak 5 languages fluently, and hold a B.A in Criminal Justice, with emphasis in Public Administration. Currently working on my Master's. In addition, I have served and traveled extensively in four of five continents. I believe I just might qualify as literate.
Jay, thank you for your service to this great nation.
Keep telling it like it is.
It is not fair and not right to give 11 million illegal aliens amnesty, you have no respect for the countless others that did the hard work to become Americans. Rewarding criminals is not the answer All the people in Congress are looking for is to say see what I did for you and VOTE FOR MY PARTY WE GOT YOU IN. This is not looking out for the good of the American citizens. I do not want amnesty now or ever for criminals. What else would you call them for invading America illegally. We are supporting them already on welfare, medicare, and food stamps which needs to cease also but no all Congress wants to do is take the easy way out instead of rounding up the illegals and send them packing. Its no wonder the United States is in the shape it is in now. We have brain dead idiots trying to lead us down a path of destruction!!!
Stop, cease, desists
Absolutely correct! Well said. Why would a country want their borders overrun by criminals and then, GIVE THEM CITIZENSHIP! We must be insane!
You are right and I encourage anyone that got their citizenship the LEGAL way to send the immigration a bill for the work you did and the fee's you paid ! I will !!
I would call the people who invaded America Pilgrims and I think they are here illegally. I mean the pilgrims were kicked out because Europe did not want them. And we did not want them either. They came here and killed our people and stole our land. Who is the illegal alien anyway whetto. The only reason you were allowed to land on our shores is because we welcome friends, however we were wrong the only thing that was given was that our environment was destroyed and our land stolen.
Can't send them packing. They're a HUGE voting block for the King.
crush-unedu, you really need to learn your history better. Not just the apologist revised libtard history, but true history.
That's RIGHT!!!! We should be going door to door violating the 4th amendment of ALL citizens to ferret out those we don't like!!!!
Good
AmericansCONSERVATIVES insist we tear up the Constitution in an attempt to keep this country white!!!!Crushedu, your point would be great if you had your facts right. The Pilgrims fled England because of persecution.
Catlover, what "libtard history" are you talking about? There's only ONE history. You can choose to accept it or not.
How about if everybody has to make an effort to be a U.S. citizen? Simply being born here grants a person a permanent resident, non-citizen status, and we all have to follow an 8-10 year procedure, costing tens of thousands of dollars, to become a U.S. citizen.
It's only fair, given that people born in the country literally did nothing to earn citizenship. We just won the geographical lottery.
Clotho so are you going to join the lottery after all you are an immigrant unless you are Native American or Spanish. After all Spanish people were here before America was America.
crushed -
Just how uneducated are you? The Spanish were immigrants as well!
As for people here before America was America, the Pilgrims meet that requirement. So do Vikings for that matter, and the French, Dutch, and a number of other colonists.
Perhaps you should go back to school and re-take your American History class.
And the people here before the europeans came from elsewhere, too. Everyone comes from somewhere. The difference is, for the most part there were no laws in place or even needed to keep immigration in check because there were far fewer people and because one place was pretty much the same as the other, so there were not the huge numbers coming from a place with nothing to a place with much, simply to take advantage of the work of others.
