Mass. special election to replace Kerry likely June 25; primary April 30

Updated, Monday 1/28 at 3:10 pm ET: Massachusetts officials expect Sen. John Kerry's resignation letter Tuesday after he is confirmed to be secretary of state, as expected.

If he is confirmed and the letter of resignation is received tomorrow, state elections officials will set the date of the special election to replace Kerry as June 25th with a primary on April 30th, said Brian McNiff, spokesman for the Massachusetts Secretary of State Elections Division.

Kerry's resignation is expected to be effective Friday. But state law indicates that the date needs to be set not from the effective date of the resignation, but from the date it is received, McNiff said.

Gov. Deval Patrick (D) said Monday he would appoint a temporary replacement Wednesday.

"If the senate votes tomorrow, and the Senator is confirmed and he submits his resignation tomorrow, then I expect to make the announcement on Wednesday," Patrick said earlier Monday, according to Patrick's office.

Patrick added that he has "pretty much" made a final decision, but didn't indicate who it would be.

"I told you we’re going to have someone that I am convinced will be a wise steward of the interest of the people of the Commonwealth while we wait for the people to elect a senator in a special election," Patrick said. "And I continue to believe that the main event is the special election."

Ex-Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) has publicly expressed interest in becoming the temporary senator, but it's not clear that he is the pick.

Barney Frank is the right choice. But we trust the Gov. (Patrick) who will make the right choice.

Frank is talented....Soooooooooooooooo talented.

.

Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination
And when he's tall
he's what we call a dinosaur sensation

Barney's friends are big and small
they come from lots of places
after school they meet to play
and sing with happy faces

Barney shows us lots of things
Like how to play pretend
ABC's, and 123's
And how to be a friend

Barney comes to play with us
Whenever we may need him
Barney can be your friend too
If you just make-believe him!

Teresa Heinz married into the Heinz family. She married Senator Heinz (a Republican) and was a registered Republican. She was not born in the US

Senator Heinz died... Teresa remarried.

And John Kerry got to freeload off the hard work of those pesky, evil greedy PA Republicans - how appropriate.

Perhaps many of you libs out there never read the story of all the vile things Kerry accused the military (in Vietnam) of doing. Kerry even threw his military medals(for what I don't know) over the WH fence. Kerry is a disgrace to our vets. Don't any of you folks read "news" besides what is on MSNBC? Kerry got "swiftboated" by the vets in the U.S. in a protest of his disgusting lying comments about our military. Kerry is a disgrace. For this Obama appoints him a high position of power. Obama is disgusting too.

Stories true, and worse, just ask my Husband, 3 tours and a LRRP, Kerry is not a disgrace, swift boating disproved. Vietnam a blot and a disgrace begun by JFK, carried on by LBJ and sort of ended under Nixon--after all we invade Cambodia, destabilize and Khmer Rouge ascend to power, create havoc in Laos, then run from Vietnam and leave the country in shambles.

Our people that fought in Vietnam did what was asked of them, no disgrace in serving and no disgrace in speaking out--the disgrace lies with those that dodged and left the less worthy to serve in their steads.

Too much anger and not enough rational thinking---The Vietnam War was disgraceful, not our military personnel--they were hero's for enduring.

How about starting with the Patriots who stood against the conservitives who believed in the Divine Right of Kings, move on to the Abolitionists, follow them up with the labor movement which brought us the 40 hr work week, the weekend, minimum wage, safe working conditions, etc. Education for all was also a liberal idea. Move away from the flexable and changing positions of Republican and Democrat and look at liberal vs conservitive ideas through history. Please, educate yourself before making statements like that.

The media will make out like Kerry is the best rich & greedy man to ever walk the earth. Kerry needs to be punished for his treason-like statements and behavior.
