VIDEO: First Read Minute: Watching Hagel and immigration
NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss the two big political stories to watch next week: Chuck Hagel's confirmation hearing to become Secretary of Defense, and immigration reform ahead of President Obama's trip to Las Vegas.
Well, gee, IR - the "problem" is that he's President Obama's choice! He obviously should have consulted with John McCain first about who to nominate. Then he could have nominated John McCain. At which point, John McCain would then lead the charge to oppose John McCain!
Hell Betty they got to have something to bitch about that don't amount to a hill of stuff. Keeps them busy and off the streets and maybe they can actually fool somebody into thinking their doing some damage.
I remember a time when it used to be accepted that any President could appoint and have approved the nominees he selected. It was very rare when the other party denied or held up the nominees--and usually if they did, there was good reason and resulted in both sides voting down the nominee ala Judge Borck.
Now, between IR's McTurtle filibustering himself and BCWC & Johntho, my neighbors must be wondering where all that hysterical laughing is coming from.
The President should not trust this Republican, Hagel, because he'll disappoint, much like Petreaus. He will betray you. He will go behind your back for support of "his" agenda. The department of defense has to transition to a leaner service and Hagel will play favorites making sure what is left is loyal to the Republican hawks and then as soon you are gone, another war. Should have put a party loyalist in this position. Watch everything go south as soon as he is appointed.
The problem is that Hagel is a Republican who dared to support a Democrat, and so the Republican party is now committed to punishing him for that betrayal.
BCWC, I always thought a war with Canada made good sense for both. After all it would be close enough to walk to work and both countries could save on gas. ( - ;
Johntho ... the populations of many North Eastern States is largely of French-Canadian stock. Imagine the internment camps needed ... jobs, jobs, jobs.
Wait.....are you saying maple syrup is going to be in short supply? We here in the Philly area are getting two inches of snow today, which of course means an immediate panic run on the stores to stock up on all our French toast supplies (hey, what else can you do with milk and butter and eggs?) If you're telling me we're gonna have to go to war over the syrup too, things could get ugly here really fast.....:(
JoAnne ... relax, it is a never ending war of my syrup is better than your syrup ... then of course there are those radical trees that grow spanning either side of the border, a sticky stuck up bunch.
Other than a bonsai version I have I know of no other maple trees in California. Often times wars happen due to the invadeee having what the invader has not. In this case maple syrup. Watch your back - when you are busy with Vermont, Cali just might jump in! An attack from over land or from the sea...........
Hmmm, I always thought the never ending maple syrup war was between Vermont and New Hampshire; at least that's what I gathered from watching The West Wing. President Bartlett insisted that it had to be NH maple syrup served at the annual congressional breakfast because Vermont syrup was inferior. Now I find out that Canadian maple syrup should have been served. Geez, I'm getting hungry for some pancakes or waffles or ?? dripping with maple syrup.
We have maple trees in Michigan too. Another couple of weeks they will be taping the trees around here matter of fact. I am sure if we invaded Canada it would be about the Beer stores. Molsons and Labatts would be pillaged and plundered for sure. We already use good ol' Canadian sippen' whisky.
The main export we get from Canada is the weather this time of year. Those dang Alberta clippers. You could keep them until summer when we need the air conditioning.
My daughter is in from across the pond for a week. We will be watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas tonight ... sometimes, things that go to Vegas just need to stay there.
One would hope Hagel's nomination would be easier than it was made to sound. Despite all the GOP Senator Theatrics this week, no doubt they've saved some for Chuck Hagel. The difference is that a good number of those republican senators were colleagues of Senator Hagel so while they may be tough, they aren't likely to be a caustic as they were toward SoS Clinton. At least if they are smart, they won't be....oh, wait, they didn't display "smart" this week, no reason they will next week either.
Jody, I tend to think, after the display they showed this week we can be sure that they'll not disappoint when Sen. Hagel appears before them.....they can't help themselves, especially the tea party favorites.
What would George Washington do about Chuck Hagel? If only we could find something in our nation's archives that might provider some insight into what our Founding Fathers would say about a nominee for Secretary of Defense whom Republicans believe should be be disqualified based on his position and statements about Israel?
...oh, wait...we need look no further than Washington's "Farewell Address" from September 1796...
"...nothing is more essential than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated. The nation which indulges towards another a habitual hatred or a habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest. Antipathy in one nation against another disposes each more readily to offer insult and injury, to lay hold of slight causes of umbrage, and to be haughty and intractable, when accidental or trifling occasions of dispute occur. Hence, frequent collisions, obstinate, envenomed, and bloody contests. The nation, prompted by ill-will and resentment, sometimes impels to war the government, contrary to the best calculations of policy. The government sometimes participates in the national propensity, and adopts through passion what reason would reject; at other times it makes the animosity of the nation subservient to projects of hostility instigated by pride, ambition, and other sinister and pernicious motives. The peace often, sometimes perhaps the liberty, of nations, has been the victim.
So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation."
Great find, Da Noid, thanks. When you read the writings of those who founded this country, there was great wisdom among them. It's really quite remarkable that so many great minds converged to establish this country and guide it those first crucial years.
I was grossly unaware that this is now strictly a Hispanic/Latino nation. Evidently, it is. And once again, women's issues are tossed by the wayside in favor of only gays and Hispanic/Latinos.
Whoever has the most money wins. And if you oppose them, you will be killed.
All the time in all of history, and in all places.
Don't know what the problem is with Hagel. Seems to me the President ought to get wide latitude in the people he surrounds himself with
Floyd,
Seems to me the luxury is only afforded to (R) Presidents! ;o)
"Don't know what the problem is with Hagel"

Sounds about right to me JoAnne although I think he ought to nominate 'Ol Turtle so the he could filibuster himself. Oh Wait that already happened

Even though he won re-election, it's still Anybody But Obama in some quarters. If you don't hate on him too, then you're the enemy.
It's a no-win situation for the GOP. More of their circular firing squad.
kaybeetoys - I swear it's a GOP sickness. If people go to the hospital with it, it's actually being diagnosed as such!

I like Chuck Hagel. But then I like Independent thinkers and people that call them as they see them. I hope he is confirmed.
Mark, Domenico, say it ain't so. A dead horse kick-athon? Maybe some offshore news? Canada attacks Vermont ... the Maple Syrup War?
BCWC, I always thought a war with Canada made good sense for both. After all it would be close enough to walk to work and both countries could save on gas. ( - ;
LOL, you guys have a good routine going there. Johntho, that really cracked me up..too funny.
Johntho ... the populations of many North Eastern States is largely of French-Canadian stock. Imagine the internment camps needed ... jobs, jobs, jobs.

Tiny bonsai maple trees could become really popular, Mark...enough syrup for a single serving. You might just be on to something!
Now I want pancakes!
Hmmm, I always thought the never ending maple syrup war was between Vermont and New Hampshire; at least that's what I gathered from watching The West Wing. Mark
By air is best and in the Fall. Duck hunting season is the sneaky way in. Remember to quack.

Okay, let me guess.....I'm the only one here who prefers chicken and gravy on my waffles, right? Come on, fellow Pennsylvanians, help me out here!
The main export we get from Canada is the weather this time of year. Those dang Alberta clippers. You could keep them until summer when we need the air conditioning.
kaybeetoys,
I am laughing at the thought of a backyard orchard of bonsai maple trees slung with tiny buckets to catch the syrup.
My maple bonsai is totally neurotic. It will shed its leaves and come roaring back couple times a year, then shut down for the winter.
Canada attacks Vermont. Republicans block federal aid.
OH MY GOD! The President is going to VEGAS!!!!! Outrage!
Terrible, just terrible.
Waiting for the outrage at the cost to taxpayers in 3. 2. 1....
Mark judging by the comments I heard on the way Home about 'Ol Harry he might want to rethink that. Might get caught in a sh!t storm crossfire.
Redneck,
Good point, but Las Vegas is a part of Nevada on a map only. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!
I know that's right Mark. Just ask 'Ol Floyd and Betty.
Don't ask, don't tell..............
Mark,
My daughter is in from across the pond for a week. We will be watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas tonight ... sometimes, things that go to Vegas just need to stay there.
A little Johnny Depp and Hunter S! Enjoy!
What happens in Vegas only stays in Vegas if you bribe your friends in Pennsylvania not to let the pictures go public. Just a thought.....
Guys - if he wins enough he can pay down the debt. And, don't ya have to let the President win??? Isn't that a rule somewhere?????
Do tell! Just this once?! ;)
JoAnne,
How much is it going to cost me this time? lol
Floyd is on his own with the shots of the showgirls - too pricey for my budget! ;o)))

GBM, I know. It's a shame they find bad behavior, rudeness and stupid questions a sign of their esteem.
Jody - we've been OVER this. You cannot say "smart" and "Republican" in the same sentence!
Seeking...."Oops!"
What would George Washington do about Chuck Hagel? If only we could find something in our nation's archives that might provider some insight into what our Founding Fathers would say about a nominee for Secretary of Defense whom Republicans believe should be be disqualified based on his position and statements about Israel?

Hagel will be approved but not without some showboating, posturing, and digs earned and unearned.
I was grossly unaware that this is now strictly a Hispanic/Latino nation. Evidently, it is. And once again, women's issues are tossed by the wayside in favor of only gays and Hispanic/Latinos.
