Next up: Immigration

The president is taking his second-term agenda on the road next week.

However, the topic of Tuesday’s trip is immigration and not gun control. While event details are still being sorted out, the White House has confirmed that “the president will be traveling to Nevada on Tuesday to redouble the Administration's efforts to work with Congress to fix the broken immigration system this year.”

This comes after an unannounced meeting at the White House with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Friday morning. Members of the caucus and the White House expressed a “sense of urgency” when it came to tackling the issue of comprehensive immigration reform.

Since his re-election, President Obama has said that he would attempt to tackle the issue in his second term and the topic was given prominence by being included in his inaugural address.

“Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity,” he said Monday.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who has been an outspoken supporter of the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform said after the meeting, “We all need to work together -- the president and Congress, Republicans and Democrats -- to get something done right away."

In an interview late last year, House Speaker John Boehner said, “I think a comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I’m confident that the president, myself, others, can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.”

But while there has been acknowledgement and even some optimism on both sides of the aisle that there needs to be some type of reform to the country’s immigration system, it is still unclear how any kind of large-scale reform would move through Congress, what the details would be, and who would spearhead it.

President Obama's push for comprehensive immigration reform comes after his sweeping advantage with Latinos in his re-election. Obama won 71 percent of Latinos, up from 67% in 2008. They made up 10 percent of the electorate, up from 9 percent in 2008, which underperforms their population nationally -- 16 percent, according to the U.S. Census.

In Nevada, those shares are even higher. Obama won 74 percent of Hispanics in Nevada, and made up 19 percent of the electorate (but are 27 percent of the overall population). They were crucial in helping Obama to a 52-46% win in the Silver State, as well as victories in Colorado, New Mexico, and Florida.

yes, legalize the 13, 14, 15 million illegals that are here and you get 25 million more to take their place. Obama is a clown and so is the entire democrat party. They don't give a damn what happens to this country as long as they can buy votes. History will show Obama to be the absolute most disgustingly bad president of all time.

So many opinions from so many who have no idea what it is really like living in a small U.S. town that borders Mexico. How about a little insight and maybe you can come up with some real solutions. I grew up in a town where although everyone's driver licenses said we lived in the state of Arizona you sure would not know it by the primary language spoken. If the border was shut down that day, school would be canceled because not enough of the student body showed up for school. All of our stores and medical facilities were located walking distance from the border. If you got into a fender bender with a car from Mexico you were out of luck, because unlike us US citizens who have to have insurance to drive in their country they do not have to have insurance to drive in ours. Our schools and hospitals are poorly funded. Why, because the majority of people do not have insurance or pay state taxes. Pregnant women from Mexico days before their due date will stay in a hotel and travel to the nearest hospital to deliver their babies. If you are wondering about work, well there are not many jobs in this town. So you tell me, what needs to be done to fix this kinda place? Because this town is just one of many...

Come on Prez, can't you finish as least one thing before you start something else? You start projects and then just leave them all. I think the budget (remember that little thing) needs to be solved first. Then you started the gun control, which is still in turmoil. Then it's also Obamacare. All of these needs to be discussed, fine-tuned, parties needs united and etc. Just STOP. PLEASE.

Dire need of a 5 year moratorium on making new laws ; instead , let there be a 5 year period of enforcing existing laws. If existing laws are not being enforced, why make new ones ?

Ah, U.S. immigration law - my bread and butter! I am not a U.S. citizen - I'm a lawful permanent resident (a/k/a 'green card' holder) and I too have endured the costs (financial, emotional, etc.) of the admittedly broken U.S. immigration system.

While I could write a book on the topic and on various ideas that would improve the process, I'd like to highlight a couple of points.

First of all, while we may disagree on what to do with those adults who willingly chose to enter the U.S. without inspection (which is the main technical definition of 'illegal' alien), the problem remains that with them came millions of children - children who don't have the ability to either agree or disagree on entering the U.S. without inspection

These children grow up, often without even a memory of a previous life in a previous country. Yet, they are unable to further their studies or make positive contributions to society because their parents acted improperly.

You cannot summarily return these people to the country of their parents' origins simply because of their parents' violations. The Dream Act has been talked about for all the decades I've been plying the U.S. immigration law trade. Nothing has ever been done, except for the recent Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which at least temporarily grants a very specific group of these kids employment authorization and the ability to continue their studies or military service.

Another point: people come to the U.S. illegally because they know there are employers in the U.S. who will hire them. Instead of placing the blame on the people - lest we forget, they are usually very poor and poorly educated - who risk life and limb to come to the U.S., why don't we place it on the unscrupulous U.S. employers who actively seek these workers - so that they can avoid paying decent wages or providing benefits, etc.?

If we are enforcing the existing laws against these employers and we require all U.S. employers - big and small - to abide by the laws which clearly prohibit knowingly employing an unauthorized worker, then the 'demand' for illegal immigrant workers will dry up and these people will no longer feel compelled to enter the U.S. Yes, this may mean that the cost of produce, construction, landscaping, etc. may go up, but if you are really intending to reduce the flow of illegal immigration, we must start at the employer's doorstep.

One final point: there is the mistaken assumption that immigration to the U.S. the legal way is easy and open to anyone as long as you wait and pay the fees. Nothing could be further from the truth. A person without an education or a specialized skill has nearly 0 chances of qualifying for any sort of legal immigration, outside of refugee or asylee status (and a few more minor exceptions). Therefore, just telling people to 'go back in line and wait your turn' - while it is a nice idea in theory - does not work in the real world, especially in the way immigration law is set up.

Here is their strategy, introduce immigration, gun control, budgets, and then trade them and attach them to certain bills that everyone, or a majority wants, Gun control will be attached to the budget and debt legislation, or to immigration, like amnesty waivers, and make the Republican or demonrats vote FOR one and get the other, like gun control will be a rider, or vise verse. and Bohner is not smart enough to fend it off.

The legal Immigration Visa paperwork process needs to be reformed, it is absurd.

It could take years to get a Visa and the fees are not refunded if rejected.

Having a 'Green Card' is also subject to ridiculous restrictions and penalties.

I would suggest everyone read the requirements as per the USCIS and DHS.

Immigration to the US is a good thing, it's what our traditional values are based on. My father was an immigrant. Illegal immigrants are not a good thing. How is it that the left can so quickly endorse the commission of a felony by rewarding it. Citizenship....voting? Felons don't vote. I've heard the arguments; the law is unfair, it should be changed yada yada. It was put on the books for a reason. You leftists want to SELECTIVELY chose which laws to ignore or change; those that suit your purposes or jibe with your dogma. Be careful; you'll open Pandora's Box. Many laws can be changed, and some you might not like so much. I hope the word "comprehensive" as you've been throwing it around, actually includes protecting US sovereignty, properly managing our borders and enforcing laws already on the books instead of conveniently enforcing when it fits your political needs. There have already been two waves of illegals nationalized in the past 30 years, Jimmy the Bean and Slick Willy magic wanded about 12MM illegals, ALL of whom now block vote Democrat. Shocking, I know, that King Barry and Elvira Pelosi actually want to run that scam again. Hmmm, I gotta ponder what law(s) I want to ignore, since you opened the box.

Remember, Ted Kennedy and McCain actually put together a compromise before the Senator's passing, and Pelosi single handedly killed it. Do your research. She thought requiring all the illegals to actually register and get ID cards was an outrage. The status quo of mass border breaks suited her just fine. Maybe she was simply planning for this latest round of amnesty.
