Next up: Immigration

The president is taking his second-term agenda on the road next week.

However, the topic of Tuesday’s trip is immigration and not gun control. While event details are still being sorted out, the White House has confirmed that “the president will be traveling to Nevada on Tuesday to redouble the Administration's efforts to work with Congress to fix the broken immigration system this year.”

This comes after an unannounced meeting at the White House with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Friday morning. Members of the caucus and the White House expressed a “sense of urgency” when it came to tackling the issue of comprehensive immigration reform.

Since his re-election, President Obama has said that he would attempt to tackle the issue in his second term and the topic was given prominence by being included in his inaugural address.

“Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity,” he said Monday.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who has been an outspoken supporter of the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform said after the meeting, “We all need to work together -- the president and Congress, Republicans and Democrats -- to get something done right away."

In an interview late last year, House Speaker John Boehner said, “I think a comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I’m confident that the president, myself, others, can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.”

But while there has been acknowledgement and even some optimism on both sides of the aisle that there needs to be some type of reform to the country’s immigration system, it is still unclear how any kind of large-scale reform would move through Congress, what the details would be, and who would spearhead it.

President Obama's push for comprehensive immigration reform comes after his sweeping advantage with Latinos in his re-election. Obama won 71 percent of Latinos, up from 67% in 2008. They made up 10 percent of the electorate, up from 9 percent in 2008, which underperforms their population nationally -- 16 percent, according to the U.S. Census.

In Nevada, those shares are even higher. Obama won 74 percent of Hispanics in Nevada, and made up 19 percent of the electorate (but are 27 percent of the overall population). They were crucial in helping Obama to a 52-46% win in the Silver State, as well as victories in Colorado, New Mexico, and Florida.

bagger - save it for hate radio. You don't know what you are talking about. Health care, immigration, the economy, the financial system, housing market, stock market, auto industry were all in the toilet when Obama got elected.

We've had over 40 straight months of private sector job growth under Obama, the deficit has gone from $1.4 Trillion to $1.1 Trillion (no help from the baggers), stock market has doubled, housing market is greatly improved, auto industry saved, financial system restored. Need I say more? If you see it any other way, you need to get of Fox Noise and hate radio for a while.

Obama has been an enormous success and the whole health care thing will be another huge success story in history. How about the GW Bush guy - the one who commanded a stellar 19% approval rating while in office? You folks praise those whom America rejects, and condemn those who Americans support (Obama's approval rating is around 60%). Get with it baggger.

All the haters just want to parrot the negative, doom and gloom taken on by the GOP and fox news!

Senator McCain and others back when they were responsible and reasonable, had immigration reform at the forefront then the T-party did a coo on the GOP, now all reason is gone!

With the blame the illegals for all our economic woes started on fox news, taken up by the tpottiers, all the hate and trying to divide America in the makers and takers, which is pure BS, we can't even have a discussion without it fallen down into hate speech and vitriol!

After the election the GOP knows if it is to survive they have to get back into the discussion, and have a better plan then self deportation!

what about social security reform? The disability portion of it will be broke in three years. Will obama go down in history as the guy who broke social security? He will if he doesn't face the music and get to work on it....

It will be interesting to see how the socialist circumvents the constitution to "fix" this problem..he did ease a few of his objectives from the Dream Act through, but this time i suspect it will be in your face legislation...and congress just will not proceed to impeach this narcissist antichrist..

As a tough, realistic liberal (ha the repubs wondering those terms don't jive, well many soldiers and athletes are just that), we need to look at a humane way to separate those illegal immigrants who have value to the country from those that need to be sent home so unemployed Americans can get their jobs (even minimum wage ones) and all taxpayers don't have to pay for those costs of having them here like emergency room bills, etc.

Maybe make regional detention and processing centers for them to report to, so those living in their cars/trucks or homeless on the streets, etc. have a known place to go/report to. They are detained there only long enough to decide if they have skills we need and they can be issued a green card plus given some path to citizenship or safely transported back to their country. This effort would create a few jobs, although gov jobs, for a couple years just making and running those centers. Also coordinate with American worker rights and unions groups, so the contractors don't just go to the centers to get cheap non-union labor.

Let see, take rights away from law abiding citizens with the patriot act and gun control and give them to illegal aleins that broke the law to get here. Reagan did it a while back, now obama and guess another president will have to do it in the future, since they wont secure the borders or deport those that should be deported. I think we should open the gates to the prisons, we know all the people in there are sorry and didnt mean to break the law.

Can you say the government is screwed up?

Yes Mein Fuhrer Obama and the National Socialist Democratic Party have to pay the illegal immigrants off for going to the poles and voteing for them in the last election. It doesn`t matter that they have broken the law,and they have broken federal law,and that they are crooks, and that most of them hate America, and that we are in the middle of a economic collapse. The only thing that counts is that they vote for the National Democratic Socialist Party.I mean after all isn`t mein fuhrer Obama`s goal to tear up our constitution and turn this into a socialist state.

The first step on the path to American citizenship CANNOT be an illegal one. If this President intends to award American citizenship to persons who are here illegally, then he is UNWORTHY of his office and should be impeached!

Racists surely take the bait pretty easily, as shown on blogs. The funny part is, repub/conservative business (small and big) money probably pays the income of most of the illegal immigrants they love to hire for cheap labor. You know, those yardworkers, lowest construction jobs (ditch diggers, etc.), and others like ones cleaning stores, etc....13 million people live on a lot of business / property owner payrolls.

"Four out of five Americans support a path to citizenship, according to a poll conducted by bipartisan researchers"....

              Keep it real folks.

Just a reminder, so we know who has dirty hands too some dirtier than others covering up their employing of illegal immigrants - Meg Whitman opposed Jerry Brown for gov of largest state/CA, kept a maid she supposedly knew had told her she was illegal and wanted help getting legal; Romney made that debate statement saying he told his yardwork manager to get the illegals working on some job for the manager to replace them immediately "I am running for office for gosh sakes and can't have them on my yard project" or similar, and Walmart along with likely other corporations have been found to not be able to verify some workers or contractors were legal to be working in USA, Walmart settling out of court to end the case with a fine, etc. a few years ago. I think for the larger corporations that have been involved it probably is a region or branch of stores/workplaces not the whole corporation involved with employing illegals whether contractor or direct, but of course it came down to some manager wanting to get the cheapest labor whether legal or not to do the work.

Common folks, the current situatuin is good for the Repug dream for any number of reasons. No "final solution is even in the cards from Mr. B and his ilk. Cheap labor to pick the veggies in CA keeps our food prices down, sort of though I think it might have more to do with excessive profit for the supply chain than any thing else--cheap, illegal labor picking up the garbage and doing construction labor jobs keeps unions down, no striking for job saftey and a living wage-- all those nasty little brown people running arround gives an opportunity to pass more repressive laws (oh...wait..I forgot...all those folks are against big goverment and excessive laws...laren't they?)-- low wages and minimal to no tax collection = less for the government to spend which is goo news...right?--immigration gives a straw dog to beat with a stick instead of addressing real social concerns---ad nauseum

No matter what the country of origin, all people here illegally, should be sent home to go through the proper channels (as many have) to enter this country and become citizens, Period. If they can't do that, they should keep out. Period.

The Dream Act has become our worst nightmare Period. End of story.
